Nigeria To Review Lockdown Relaxation This Week

The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that the relaxation of the lockdown will be reviewed this week.

The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu, disclosed it during the daily briefing on Tuesday.

Aliyu said the task force would not hesitate to change strategy if the current directive is not working.

“You are probably aware that by the end of this week, we will be coming to the end of the second week of easing the lockdown and we will be taking further decisions based on the review of the performance of the restrictions that we have in place.

“And we will not hesitate to change our strategy if it looks like it is not working.”

Nigeria currently has 4,641 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

President Putin’s Spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, informed state media on Tuesday that he had contracted the novel coronavirus. Peskov, 52, said the last time he had met with Putin in person was more than a month ago.

Russia’s prime minister, culture minister and construction minister have also tested positive for the virus.

“I am receiving treatment,” Peskov said in comments carried by state news agency TASS.

Russia’s novel coronavirus caseload surpassed 230,000 on Tuesday to become the world’s second-largest, behind the United States, according to comparative data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Although Russia’s caseload has been rising by more than 10,000 per day for the past week, officials have noted a slight decline in the growth rate as regions seek to lift lockdown quarantine measures that have devastated the economy.

Putin, who has been working remotely for a month to avoid contracting the disease, announced this week that a nationwide non-working period intended to curb the infection rate would end on Tuesday. Putin has tasked regional officials with determining when to lift stricter quarantine restrictions at the local level.

Why Gambari's Past Makes Him Unfit To Be Chief of Staff

The convener of the Coalition for Revolution (CORE), Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the appointment of Professor Ibrahim Gambari as the new Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Buhari yesterday appointed the former Minister of External Affairs as his new CoS, following the death of Abba Kyari, who lost his life to the dreaded COVID-19 virus.

It was learned that Gambari will be announced as the new CoS to the President during a virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday.

Reacting to the appointment in a statement on Tuesday, Sowore alleged that Gambari’s major role during General Sani Abacha’s military regime makes him unfit for the new role.

The former presidential candidate added that Gambari also served almost all the dictators that have ruled the country.

Sowore added that Gambari, who some people claim is an intelligent man, used his ‘intelligence’ to defend the draconian policies of the Abacha regime while he was Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations.

He said, “Professor Ibrahim Gambari, who some people claim is an intelligent man, used his ‘intelligence’ to defend the draconian policies of the Abacha regime while he was Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations.

“He was one of Abacha’s equivalents of the “goebel” representing the infamous dictator with vigor and a propensity that could only be found in fascist Italy of old.

“As more pressure mounted on the Abacha regime from all corners of the world, Professor Gambari became more notorious and ruthless in defending and deflecting attacks against the Abacha dictatorship.

“I remember his many appearances on cable news channels, especially after Abacha murdered environmentalist and author, Ken Saro-Wiwa following what can be described as a kangaroo trial. Professor Gambari stoically denied that the Abacha regime had committed a crime; he labeled Saro-Wiwa a “common criminal” who had engaged in the murder of some Ogoni elders.

“After the demise of Abacha, his other co-dictators and collaborators were put in their place: Call it the Nigerian Hall of Shame.

“Professor Ibrahim Gambari has not been touched; he has not been called to account. Unlike the Usenis, Mustapha, and Gwarzo, he did not appear before the hapless “Oputa Panel” to explain his ignominious role.

Worry, as FG spends N679m daily on feeding schoolchildren during lockdown

Insistence by the Federal Government to continue its homegrown school feeding programme, even when schools in the country are currently shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, may not only fail abysmally, but become a drain pipe on the lean resources of government at this point in time.

This is the position of some stakeholders in the education sector such as the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Concerned Parents and Educators, CPE among others.

They made their positions on the matter known while speaking with Vanguard, basing their fears on workability of the logistics needed to take food to the homes of pupils since people are not allowed to congregate in large numbers because of the pandemic.

This is just as it was gathered that government claims to be spending the sum of N679 million daily or N13.5 billion monthly on the project in 31 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

-NANS’ position

According to the South-West Coordinator of NANS, Comrade Kappo Samuel Olawale, given the situation in the country, the plan is not realistic.

“The plan is not realistic at all. To me, it is a huge prank and a costly one for that matter. How many houses will the food vendors cover since schools are not in session and pupils cannot congregate at a point?

“If they ask the vendors to go and supply the food rations to the pupils at home, it is not that the beneficiaries are living at a spot or a particular place. Even if that is possible, it will increase the cost of logistics.

“Also, if you are asking the pupils to go to a particular place to collect vouchers for the food or even collect the food, there is no doubt the situation will become rowdy and the large gatherings we want to avoid will present themselves, the process would eventually be hijacked by others.

“Why can’t they feed the parents and the parents feed their wards? The other time palliatives were to be given people, the process was badly coordinated. The truth is some people just want to make money for themselves,” he said.

-NUT reacts

Reacting, Lagos State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Otunba Adesina Adedoyin, who spoke in a similar manner, wondered why pupils in private schools were not included in the programme from the beginning.

“As a teacher, I know that our pupils and students live in different communities. In Lagos, some people live in Ikorodu and run businesses and shops on Lagos Island and, thereby enrol, their wards in schools close to their business premises. How easy will it be to now take food meant for such students to their home addresses?

“The logistics the government would need to implement this would definitely not be Nigerian,” he said.

-Parents’ angle

Founder, CPE, Mrs Yinka Ogunde, asked whether government has data on the pupils.

“I don’t know the level of their preparedness when one talks about logistics as that would inform the workability or otherwise of their plan. The logistics must be well thought-out. We must be careful not to create a bigger problem while trying to solve one,” she opined.

A lawyer, Mr Tolu Ayodele, described the move as a white elephant project, saying “feeding school children that are not in school is a white elephant project aimed at diverting public funds and denying the citizens opportunities of governmental dividends, at least for once since the inception of this administration.

“The policy of feeding children or school pupils at home is just a sham and a smokescreen aimed at deceiving the populace.”

Also reacting, Evans Ufeli, Executive Director, Cadrell Advocacy Centre, said: “This government should stop embarrassing Nigeria. They can just keep quiet, the children aren’t complaining and the parents are trying their best. It’s disrespectful and insulting to the children and their parents if government dishonestly continues to keep and hold this conversation.”

Recall that the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, in the last few days, had been harping on government’s insistence to continue the homegrown school feeding programme, even when schools are shut down.

Last Saturday, she reiterated the decision while distributing relief materials to some people in Karimajiji, Abuja.

She said Lagos, Ogun, FCT and later, Kano, would be where the exercise would start, adding that vendors would take the food to pupils’ homes door-to-door with vouchers allocated at specific collection times to avoid overcrowding.

She added that vouchers would be redeemed at designated distribution centres and that 3.1 million households would benefit.

“It is in that place where we are going to keep the food rations that we will distribute the vouchers and then they will come to pick up their own ration,” the Minister said.

When vanguard correspondent sought to know how prepared Lagos State is for the exercise from the Education Commissioner, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, she neither picked her calls nor replied a text message sent to her.

Newcastle's new billionaire owners make Gareth Bale a priority trabsfer target

Newcastle's prospective new owners have reportedly earmarked Gareth Bale as their priority summer signing as they bid to make their mark on the Premier League.

The Magpies are currently the subject of a £300million bid from a wealthy group of investors including the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.

That bid has been accepted by Newcastle's current owner, Mike Ashley, but must be given the green light by the Premier League before it's rubber stamped.

A decision is likely to be made after a meeting by league chiefs this week and could see Newcastle handed a sizeable transfer war chest if it's approved.

Should it go ahead, Spanish outlet Marca has reported that Bale is their first choice summer target and are confident they have the cash and strategy to convince him to join the club.

Newcastle are keen to appoint Mauricio Pochettino, who is a keen admirer of Bale, as their new manager, having previously admitted he would've been keen to sign him during his time as Spurs boss.

Bale came close to leaving Madrid last summer after Zinedine Zidane made it public that the Welshman was no longer part of his first-team plans.

But after appearing to be on the brink of moving to Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning, Madrid pulled the plug on the move at the 11th hour.

This summer will be the first time Tottenham don't have first refusal on re-signing Bale in the event another club make a bid for his services.

Woman drowns own baby for making her miss university admission

A 22-year-old woman, Adisa Funmilola, has drowned her baby because the child prevented her from going to university to study law.

She drowned the one-year and six months old baby inside a bucket of water in her apartment at Plot 22, Gowon Estate, Lagos, on Monday, and then reported herself to the Police.

During interrogation, she blamed her action on frustration, saying her baby deprived her of actualising her dream of becoming a lawyer.

She explained that she was impregnated by one Yusuf Folarin, while both were attending a Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, class at City of Success in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

Trouble started for her after Folarin denied paternity, requesting rather that the pregnancy be aborted.

Along the line, she said she was offered admission into the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, to study Law, but had to defer the admission because of the baby.

Surprisingly, Folarin, the woman who drowned her baby, did not show remorse for her action.

She said: “I killed my baby and reported myself to the police. I filled a bucket with water, dipped her inside and held her head until she died.

“I did it for three reasons. First, I didn’t have the financial might to take care of her. Second, I was tired and frustrated.

“But the most painful reason is that she deprived me of actualising my dream of becoming a lawyer.

“I would have aborted the pregnancy, but my father advised me against it. The person that is responsible for the pregnancy rejected me. I live with my sister, who has no job and I am also not working.”

Asked if she was aware of the magnitude of her offence, she gave a wry smile, and muttered: “The most important thing is that I have killed the baby.”

She was taken to the command headquarters in Ikeja, on Tuesday, from where the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, directed that she should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCIID, Yaba.

Elder sister to the suspect who was around, who expressed shock at her sibling’s action. said she was at home on the day of the incident, but never knew what the latter was doing until policeman stormed their apartment.

The sister, who did not want her name in print, said: “Yes, we live together. I was in my bedroom while she was in hers. I didn’t know when she drowned the baby.

“I suspect she is mentally deranged because our mother had a similar mental issue before she died.”

Police sources hinted that investigation into the matter would include a medical test on the suspect to ascertain whether she is mentally stable.

“But that will not stop her from facing the consequence of her action,” police sources said.

EFCC Nabs 2 Chinese Men For Offering N50M Bribe In Cash To Its Top Officer (Photos)

The Sokoto Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested two Chinese: Mr. Meng Wei Kun and Mr. Xu Koi for offering a sum of N50,000,000 (Fifty Million Naira only) as bribe to its Zonal Head, Mr. Abdullahi Lawal.

The suspects were arrested on Monday, May 11, 2020 in Sokoto.

The bribe was allegedly offered in a desperate bid to compromise ongoing investigations of a construction company, China Zhonghao Nig. Ltd, handling contracts awarded by the Zamfara State Government in the sum of N50,000,000,000.00 (Fifty Billion Naira) between 2012 to 2019.

The zonal office of the Commission is investigating the construction company, in connection with the execution of contracts for the construction of township roads in Gummi, Bukkuyun, Anka and Nassarawa towns of Zamfara state; and also the construction of one hundred and sixty eight (168) solar-powered boreholes in the 14 local government areas of the state.

Alarmed by the consistency and professionalism of investigation being conducted, the company reached out to Lawal with an offer of N100,000,000 (One Hundred Million Naira) as bribe to “bury” the matter.

In a grand design to trap the corrupt officials, Lawal played along, and on Monday, two representatives of the company Meng Wei Kun and Xu Kuoi offered him cash totalling fifty million naira in their office along airport road, Sokoto. The cash was offered as a first installment.

Two Chinese arrested For offering N100m bribe to EFCC officer

The Sokoto Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two Chinese, Mr. Meng Wei Kun and Mr. Xu Koi, for offering a sum of N50 million as bribe to its Zonal Head, Mr. Abdullahi Lawal.

The N50 million bribe conveyed in a four cartons of table water, was the first installment of the N100 million offered as bribe to the EFCC officer.

A statement Tuesday by the Commission’s Head, Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said the suspects were arrested on Monday in Sokoto.

The commission said the bribe was offered in a desperate bid to compromise ongoing investigations of a construction company, China Zhonghao Nig. Ltd, handling N50 billion contracts awarded by the Zamfara State Government between 2012 to 2019.

The statement read:

“The zonal office of the Commission is investigating the construction company, in connection with the execution of contracts for the construction of township roads in Gummi, Bukkuyun, Anka and Nassarawa towns of Zamfara state; and also the construction of one hundred and sixty eight (168) solar- powered boreholes in the 14 local government areas of the state.

“Alarmed by the consistency and professionalism of investigation being conducted, the company reached out to Lawal with an offer of N100 million as bribe to “bury” the matter.

“In a grand design to trap the corrupt officials, Lawal played along, and on Monday, two representatives of the company Meng Wei Kun and Xu Kuoi offered him cash totalling fifty million naira in their office along airport road, Sokoto. The cash was offered as a first installment.”

The statement said the suspects were promptly arrested with the cash as evidence.

The commission said the investigation of the construction company was informed by an intelligence on alleged conspiracy, misappropriation of public funds, embezzlement, official corruption, abuse of office, stealing and money laundering obtained against the Zamfara State government through inflated and uncompleted contracts awarded to the company.

It added that investigations had so far revealed that China Zounghao Ltd had received payments of over N41 billion from the Zamfara State government, out of which about N16 billion, equivalent to over $53 million, was allegedly diverted and traced to some bureau de change operators

The statement said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

FIFA postpones women’s U-17 World Cup to 2021

The women’s Under-17 World Cup, due to be held in India in November, has been postponed for three month, FIFA said on Tuesday, adding to a growing list of sporting events hit by the pandemic.

The tournament, to be played in five cities across the country, will now start February 17, football’s governing body said.

India is looking to boost its international standing as a host of top sporting events after holding the men’s Under-17 World Cup in 2017.

“All the host cities have put in a lot of effort and commitment so far, and we are happy that the new dates will allow them to make up for the lost time and provide momentum going forward,” the local organising committee said after the FIFA announcement.

FIFA also unveiled new dates for this year’s U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica and Panama. It will now be played from January 20 to February 6, 2021.

The 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania has been pushed back to September 12 next year.

Meanwhile, the 70th FIFA Congress, which was due to be held in Addis Ababa, will be run as an online event on September 18.

The coronavirus has brought the international sport to a standstill, but some football leagues are restarting — albeit behind closed doors.

South Korea’s K-League came back to life last Friday and Germany’s Bundesliga football championship is to restart this weekend in empty stadiums.

Over 1000 people line up for free food in Geneva as coronavirus continues to wreck livelihoods

More than 1,000 people queued up to get free food parcels in Geneva, highlighting the impact of the coronavirus epidemic on the working poor and undocumented immigrants even in wealthy Switzerland.

The line of people stretched for more than 1 km (half a mile) outside an ice rink where volunteers were handing out around 1,500 parcels to people who started queuing as early as 5am.

Currently Switzerland has 30,305 confirmed cases of coronavirus and has recorded 1,830 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Patrick Wieland, from the Doctors Without Borders group, said: 'In Geneva, one of the richest cities in the world, there have always been people living precariously, especially all the people who work as housekeepers, in agriculture, on construction sites or in hotels, and they found themselves overnight without a job because of COVID-19.'

One illegal immigrant who called himself Fernando said he lost his restaurant job during the crisis and had no pay.

'I'm very grateful to receive this help and if the situation changes for me, I am committing to do the same thing that they are doing for me,' he said.

'At the end of the month, my pockets are empty. We have to pay the bills, the insurance, everything,' said Ingrid Berala, a Geneva resident from Nicaragua who works part-time. 'This is great, because there is food for a week, a week of relief...I don't know for next week.'

In a nation of nearly 8.6 million, 660,000 people in Switzerland were poor in 2018, the charity Caritas says, particularly single parents and those with a low level of education unable to find work after losing a job.

More than 1.1 million people were at risk of poverty, which means they have less than 60% of the median income, which was 6,538 Swiss francs ($6,736) for a full-time job in 2018.

Coronavirus Ends In Mauritius After Total Recoveries, No New Cases

Mauritius has become coronavirus-free with no active case for 15 days, the country’s ministry of health has revealed.

The coronavirus is an ongoing global pandemic which has infected over four million people across the globe, and killed over two hundred thousand.

The virus has touched every continent, with US being the worst hit. The North American country has recorded over 1.3 million cases alone.

In Africa, Mauritius becomes the first country on the continent to become virus free, while Lesotho is the only country on the continent not to have recorded a case of COVID-19.

The island nation’s official COVID-19 page said 322 people had recovered out of the 332 confirmed cases so far. 10 people have since died.

It added that all 220 recently repatriated citizens from abroad were still under quarantine.

With a population of 1.2 million people, Mauritius is known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs.

May 11 marked the fifteenth consecutive day that the no new case was recorded in the country. A lockdown however remains in place to contain possible spread of the virus.

Mauritius is the second Africa country to have declared virus-free status after Mauritania.
