Just Like HIV, Coronavirus May Never Go Away - WHO Chief, Mike Ryan

As people around the world wonder when the coronavirus might go away, a World Health Organization (WHO) chief says there is every chance the virus might not disappear, just like HIV.

HIV/AIDS was first clinically observed in 1981 in the United States and almost 40 years after, no vaccine or permanent cure has been developed for the virus which has so far killed nearly a million people.

Ryan while speaking in an online briefing on May 13, said the virus may just become one of the known viruses that kills people annually around the world.

“This virus just may become another endemic virus in our communities and this virus may never go away. HIV hasn’t gone away. I’m not comparing the two diseases but I think it is important that we’re realistic. I don’t think anyone can predict when or if this disease will disappear.

I think there are no promises in this and there are no dates. This disease may settle into a long problem, or it may not be” Ryan said.

Why President Buhari Appointed Gambari As Chief Of Staff

The newly appointed Chief of Staff to the President (CoS), Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, yesterday declared he was picked for the job because President Muhammadu Buhari needs his competence and loyalty to succeed.

Asked what Nigerians should expect from him as Chief of Staff, Gambari told reporters at the Presidential Villa in Abuja: “We have not started. I’ll have to find out. I don’t report directly to the nation, I report to the president.”

He said he would be offering his “loyalty, competence and support” to the president, adding that as the chief of staff, his guiding principle would be “to serve the president to the best of my ability.”

Buhari formerly announced Gambari as the chief of staff shortly before the commencement of the resumed Federal Executive Council (FEC). During the session, a moment of silence was observed in honour of some deceased members of FEC at various times including a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, the late Chief Richard Akinjide and the late Chief of Staff, Mallam Abba Kyari.

Gambari, Nigeria’s former permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) arrived at the Villa at 10:40 a.m. and was received by senior presidency officials including the director of protocol, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed and the permanent secretary, State House, Mallam Tijani Umar.

Also present were the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs (Office of the Vice President) Amb. Abdullahi Gwari and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Mallam Garba Shehu.

Reactions, meanwhile, have been trailing the appointment of Gambari, with the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu saying: “At this time when the entire world is combating the coronavirus pandemic and the economic consequences thereof, Prof. Gambari’s expertise and international reputation will help Nigeria galvanise national, regional and international efforts and resources to contain this viral menace and advance Nigeria’s interests on other important matters.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in a statement affirmed: “Indeed, Prof. Gambari ticks all the boxes as a round peg in a round hole. The APC is confident that Gambari, a prince of Ilorin Emirate, will bring to bear his scholarly intellect, international network, professional and administrative experience in ensuring the smooth running of the office of the president and support the government to provide good governance and successfully deliver the Next Level programmes for the benefit of Nigerians.”

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said he had no doubt that the “appointment is a major win for the presidency and the nation as a whole, especially coming at a time when Nigeria is confronting a major challenge with global outlook.”

He added: “The choice of Prof. Gambari as successor to the late Mallam Abba Kyari is commendable. Gambari is not just an academic or a diplomat; he is a fine gentleman, a decent Nigerian who epitomises the Nigerian dream.”

Video shows inmates of Los Angeles prison trying to infect themselves with coronavirus in order to win early release

A group of California prison inmates deliberately infected each other with coronavirus in a failed bid to get out of jail early.

A sudden spike Covid-19 cases was reported at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic back in mid-April seemingly without explanation.

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced Monday that 21 inmates at the jail successfully infected each other with the virus by passing around a hot water bottle and by breathing into the same face mask.

Shocking surveillance footage shot on April 26 inside the day room of the jail shows the men passing around a hot water bottle and taking sips before passing it along to the next inmate.

'With the hot water, they were trying to falsely elevate their temperature readings to generate a symptom for Covid-19,' Villanueva said.

They were also seen sharing the cup of water and were seen crowding around in the same area of the day room instead of practicing social distancing.

The men, Villanueva says, hoped they’d receive sympathy from a judge to allow them to get released early from the facility and placed on house arrest once they tested positive for coronavirus.

'There was some mistaken belief among the inmate population that if they tested positive, there was a way to force our hand and somehow release more inmates out of our jail environment, and that’s not gonna happen,' Villanueva said at a Monday press conference.

Villanueva says that 21 of the men in the 50-person block contracted the infection, but will not be given the chance to ride out the virus at their homes as they hoped.

'Then all of a sudden we saw a spike, a few weeks, ago, a very noticeable jump, and we couldn’t really understand why, when everything seemed to be going the way we wanted to,' Villanueva said.

Since February LA County's inmate population has reduced from the largest in the nation with 17,000 prisoners behind bars to a little over 11,700 over the past few months.

'Had this pandemic swept through while we were sitting on 17,000 inmates, the results would have been catastrophic,' Villanueva said.

So far 357 inmates have tested positive for Covid-19, a 60 percent jump from May 4 when there were just 123 cases among inmates. 117 of inmates who positive have recovered.

There are currently 4,590 in quarantine - about 40 percent of the jail system's total population. Now now new inmates are being tested upon entering the jail system.

'There’s a reason why these people are behind bars to begin with, because they violated the norms of society,' Villanueva said.

'But to then imperil not only their only safety, but the safety of their fellow inmates who did not want to participate in this behavior. It also endangers all the personnel, both the professional staff and the sworn staff,' he added.

Instagram model who claims she lost multiple office jobs for being too pretty now earn$60,000 per month from sharing raunchy snaps online

A stunning Instagram model who earns $60,000 per month from sharing raunchy snaps online has claimed that she lost multiple office jobs for being 'too pretty.'

Stephanie Villagomez, 29, who is known as @tiff08 on Instagram, revealed that she turned to adults-only subscription service, OnlyFans, to make an income after being forced to leave her previous waitressing role due to jealous colleagues.

Florida-based Villagomez, who is mom to an 11-year old daughter, Destiny, said things at one job got so bad that her boss was forced to let her go from the company because his wife became so jealous of the young girl's good looks.

'I worked at a restaurant as a waitress and the co-workers hated me because the guys that would go and eat in there always requested me to help them out and I would always take home more tips than them,' the model explained.

'The girls working there wouldn't even want to talk to me because they were so mad that everyone liked me. They made it difficult for me to work because they were always gossiping about me or not cleaning up.'

Villagomez said she ended up quitting the job because she was 'tired of [her co-workers] always talking about me or doing things to make my job harder,' and instead took up another waitressing role at a different restaurant.

However, again her good looks backfired she says, revealing: 'The owner liked me so much, he moved me right away to being a server because they made so much more money in tips, but the other girls I worked with were mad about that as it takes a while to get that position, often months, and I got it in the first week of working there.

'When the other girls working there found out, they wouldn't even talk to me or help me with anything, it was so hard for me to learn the job because usually on your first day, your co-workers help you but in my case, they were so mean.'

Eventually, the stunner decided enough was enough and quit the job before taking up a new role working in a dispensary, providing customers with medical marijuana, which is legal in some parts of America.

But again, Villagomez found her co-workers to be jealous of her striking looks, while many customers entering the store would specifically request her help, promoting further envy among her colleagues.

'I would even go to work without wearing makeup and in baggy clothes so I wouldn't catch people's attention but I guess it was my great customer service that they liked,' she said.

Finally, the model mom, was moved to another dispensary where things went from bad to worse as the owner's wife allegedly developed a dislike for her too.

Villagomez explained, 'The wife hated me because the husband (my boss) was extra friendly and would give me extra hours and pay me extra.

'The wife would make me do things I didn't have to do and would talk to me like I was stupid. One time she even mixed up the weed and my boss thought it was me. It got to the point where the wife told my boss, 'It's me or her' so he had to let me go.'

Thankfully, the young mom's luck turned around when she was contacted by a photographer who promised she could make a lot of money with her mega curves and gorgeous looks.

'I was scared and nervous but willing to try because at that point, I had no job and needed to pay my rent and bills, Villagomez explained. 'So I started up a premium Snapchat and it went so well, I made $20,000 in one night.

'Then the photographer suggested we start an OnlyFans so I did and my life has completely changed because I'm now my own boss and set my own rules.'

However, the stunner admits she found it hard at first to flash the flesh, and faced backlash from her family, particularly her father, who questioned her new-found career.

Ultimately though, her new online job has turned her life around.

'This has helped in so many ways like being able to travel, take my daughter anywhere she wants to go, pay my bills on time and I'm almost a homeowner,' she said.

'I'm very proud of my work and how far I've come. I'm now at two million followers and I'm a small business owner.'

Family of helicopter pilot who flew Kobe Bryant say passengers are to blame for the crash

The family of the pilot involved in the fatal helicopter crash that took the life of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, 13, and seven others earlier this year has blamed the passengers for their own deaths.

The family of pilot Ara Zobayan in court papers responding to a wrongful death lawsuit brought against the helicopter company by Bryant's widow Vanessa says that injuries or damages suffered by those on board the fatal January 26 crash, 'were directly caused in full or in part by the negligence or fault of plaintiffs.'

That's because the passengers knowingly and voluntarily accepted the risks involved in taking the flight, say the legal documents.

'Any injuries or damages to plaintiffs and/or their decedent were directly caused in full or in part by the negligence or fault of plaintiffs and/or their decedent, including their knowing and voluntary encounter with the risks involved,' the family of the pilot wrote in its response to the suit, The Blast reports.

It was not clear what family members of the pilot's were responding to the widow's lawsuit.

Zoboyan, 50, left behind a girlfriend of 11 years and her two children who he treated like his own, a close friend has revealed to DailyMail.com.

The pilot's family further says in the court papers 'that this negligence was a substantial factor in causing their purported damages, for which this answering defendant bears no responsibility.'

In the same filing, Zobayan's family also notes that several third parties could have contributed to the flight’s ultimate fate in accounting for responsibility in the fatal crash.

The family says ‘that any injuries or damages to plaintiffs and/or their decedent were directly caused in full or in part by the negligence, fault or wrongful conduct of third parties, whom this answering defendant neither controlled nor had the right to control, and for which this answering defendant bears no responsibility.’

Bryant's widow Vanessa filed the wrongful death suit on February 24 against Island Express Helicopter. An unnamed legal representative for the deceased pilot also was named in the legal action.

The suit alleges Zobayan was careless and negligent by flying in cloudy conditions.

The litigation asserts that Zobayan was negligent in eight different ways, including failing to properly assess the weather, flying into conditions he wasn't cleared for and failing to control the helicopter.

'Defendant Island Express Helicopters' breach of its duty and negligence caused the injuries and damages complained of herein and Plaintiffs' deceased, Kobe Bryant, was killed as a direct result of the negligent conduct of Zobayan for which Defendant Island Express Helicopters is vicariously liable in all respects,' the lawsuit reads.

Island Express issued a statement on its website just days after the crash saying the shock of the accident had prompted it to suspend service until it was appropriate for staff and customers.

Saudi Arabia to airlift 11,600 Nigerians reportedly stranded in the country back home

Saudi Arabia has identified about 11,600 Nigerians reportedly stranded in the country, many due to the coronavirus disease, and is making plans to airlift them back home, an official has said.

The Nigerian embassy official, who is privy to the development but asked not to be named as he was not authorised to speak to journalists, said the Saudi’s decision was contained in a letter addressed to the embassy a few weeks ago.

The source added that the list, according to the Saudis, includes Nigerians who had visited the country for umrah – a lesser hajj – and were held up by the movement restrictions introduced by Saudi authorities as part of containment measures.

The kingdom, which recorded its index coronavirus case on March 2, had initially imposed a travel ban on some neighbouring countries before extending it to include European countries and 12 others, on March 12.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, confirmed the development. He said Nigeria’s logistics challenge has been responsible for the delay in the repatriation.

Speaking on Tuesday shortly after taking part in the daily media briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVId-19, Mr Onyeama told Premium Times that some of the stranded Nigerians would have landed about a week ago, but that the country does not have enough facilities to accommodate them all for the 14-day quarantine period.

He said; “We are aware of this… In fact, they wanted to land last week, but they couldn’t because there was no arrangement to receive them.

“As you heard, we have a capacity we can absorb. The medical people have to monitor them for two weeks for quarantine. But there is only a certain number of port health authority staff who are able to monitor all these people as they come in.

“As the SGF said, we have to finish the ones we have, then allow some more to come in. We can’t allow everybody to come in because we don’t have the capacity to house them and also to monitor them medically.”

UN warns of extreme poverty in Africa post pandemic

The UN has warned that the economic downturn due to the pandemic could wipe out the gains of the last four years, at a cost of $8.5 trillion in economic activity.

Its assessment of global prospects says that more than 30 million people are likely to fall into extreme poverty this year, mainly in Africa.

The UN expects the rich economies to shrink more at 5%, but for the developing world even the more moderate decline predicted means a marked increase in poverty.

For many of those countries, the report says, the costs of fighting the pandemic and economic stimulus measures will be prohibitive.

It also says governments in developing countries are spending an ever-increasing share of their revenue on debt interest.

Separately a group of leading politicians, including the former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, has called for the cancellation of some of the debts owed by the poorest countries.

Imo Governor, Uzodimma gives 20 SUVs to Imo judges

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma on Wednesday presented vehicle gifts to Judges in Imo State and stressed the need for the judicial arm of government to join forces with the other arms, the Executive and Legislature, to move the State forward.

The Governor, who stated this during a courtesy visit by Judges, said that the dividends of democracy can only be delivered to people when all the arms of government close ranks and work as a team.

While expressing his zeal to work with the Judges, Uzodimma presented vehicle gifts of 20 brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to the serving Judges as a way of motivating them to work.

He noted that Imo State Judges have not been treated well by past administrations and pledged to change the narrative.

The Governor, who did not only stop at presenting vehicles to the Judges, also offered to take care of the outstanding entitlements of the retired Judges and ensure that other retiring ones get their entitlements a month or two after retirement.

In a vote of thanks, the Acting President of the Customary Court of Appeal of Imo State, Justice Matthew Njoku eulogized the Governor for his magnanimity to the judiciary in such a short period.

He thanked Uzodimma for “wiping away their tears and removing the shame they have faced in the past before their brother Judges from other States.” He prayed for God’s guidance and protection for the Governor in his day to day activities in the pilot of Imo State.

The governor did not, however, give the name of the 98-year-old woman.

“Today, we discharged a 98-year-old woman, our oldest COVID-19 patient in Lagos.

“She joined 25 others; 13 males and 12 females, discharged from our isolation centres after testing negative for COVID-19, bringing the total of our successfully managed and discharged patients to 528,” he said.

George Weah critic arrested in Liberia over Facebook post

Police in Liberia have arrested a political activist for a Facebook post in which he used inflammatory language to criticise the government’s proposed coronavirus feeding programme.

Menipakei Dumoe, a staunch critic of President George Weah, had rejected the idea.

He wrote on Facebook on Monday: “We don’t need free bags of rice. I say we the poor in [the capital] Monrovia need AK-47s so that our leaders can take us seriously.”

Police say his post amounts to a security threat.

Before his arrest, Mr Dumoe defended himself, saying his message was a metaphor and did not refer to actual guns.

He is acting head of the large campaign group The Council of Patriots, which has organised two mass protests in the last year against Mr Weah’s handling of the economy.

Mr Dumoe’s lawyer Findley Karnga has called for his release, saying he was being held unconstitutionally.

But police spokesman Moses Carter told the BBC that authorities had 48 hours to press charges.

Liberia has been in lockdown since 10 April, with a curfew from 15:00 to 06:00 local time.

But it has been difficult for the authorities to police as people have been going out looking for food.

The government’s $25m proposal to feed some of the most vulnerable people in the country affected by the restrictions has been approved by both houses of parliament on the condition that it specifies where the money is being sourced.

Russian investigators YET to drop charges against sisters who killed their father after years of abuse and holding them hostage at home

Russian investigators have refused to drop a murder charge against three sisters who killed their abusive father as he slept, leaving a controversial case in legal limbo.

The general prosecutor's office concluded earlier this year that the Khachaturyan sisters had been subjected to prolonged physical and s.e.xual abuse.

The killing should therefore be seen as "necessary self-defence", it said.

That ruling had been expected to close the case.

But a lawyer for one of the women has told the BBC that Russia's investigative committee has now rejected the prosecutor's position.

Teenagers Maria, Angelina and Krestina Khachaturyan were arrested in July 2018 for attacking their father, Mikhail, using a knife, hammer and pepper spray.

They later testified that their father had subjected them to prolonged abuse effectively holding them hostage in their home.

The two older sisters could face up to 20 years in prison if the murder charge is eventually brought to court.

Their mother, who had been forced to flee the family home for her own safety, has previously told the BBC that she and others complained to police multiple times over the years about the violence but were ignored.

"Formally, the investigative committee conducted an additional investigation but reached the same conclusion [as before]," lawyer Alexei Lipser explained, meaning that the original charge of premeditated murder still stands.

"It seems the order from above remains the same," he said.

However, as there is no new evidence, the lawyer believes the prosecutor's position will also remain unchanged.

"Now, either the investigators have to agree with the prosecutor and change the charge [to self-defence] or it goes on ping-ponging back and forth," the lawyer said.

The case prompted protests and a mass petition in support of the women and increased calls for a new law against domestic violence.

In January, the prosecutor's office found that the Khachaturyan sisters suffered "beating, constant humiliation, threats and abuse, physical and s.e.xual violence" and so developed a "defensive reaction".

It concluded that experience made them "protect themselves by any means", an argument the investigative committee has now dismissed.

The case cannot go to court unless those two parties agree on the charge. The three sisters are living separately in Moscow while awaiting trial, and are not allowed to communicate with each other.

WHO confirms coronavirus will NEVER go away

Coronavirus could become endemic like HIV, the World Health Organization has warned.

“It is important to put this on the table: this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away,” WHO emergencies expert Mike Ryan told an online briefing.

“I think it is important we are realistic and I don’t think anyone can predict when this disease will disappear,” he added.

“I think there are no promises in this and there are no dates.

“This disease may settle into a long problem, or it may not be.”

However, he said it would take a massive effort by the world to cope with the disease, even if a vaccine was found.

He described the huge effort needed as a “massive moonshot”.

More than 100 potential vaccines are being developed, including several in clinical trials.

However, experts have underscored the difficulties of finding vaccines that are effective against coronaviruses.

Ryan noted that vaccines exist for other illnesses, such as measles, that have not been eliminated.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus added: “The trajectory is in our hands, and it’s everybody’s business, and we should all contribute to stop this pandemic.”

“We need to get into the mindset that it is going to take some time to come out of this pandemic,” WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove told the briefing.

Nyesom Wike: Playing the Idi Amin

SIR: Idi Amin Dada was the Ugandan military officer who served as the President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. During his reign as the President, he was ruthless, merciless, in fact, he was deemed to be one of the cruellest presidents in the world history. He ruled Uganda as if he owned the next seconds of his life. His rule entertained political repression, rampant human rights abuses, ethnic persecution, corruption, nepotism, gross economic mismanagement, etc.

Idi Amin carried out tons of legal decisions on his own. He barely took his offenders to Uganda’s courts. No matter how big or small his offender offense was, he had a stool of judgement within his compound. He was the judge to almost all the cases that had to do with him. He judged his offenders as his mood dictated. And afflicted the people who condemned his inhuman dispositions. Some international observers and human rights group estimated that between 100,000 and 500,000 people were killed while he was the President of Uganda. No doubt, his inhuman idiosyncrasy was the reason why he fled Uganda into exile.

With the look of things, the Rivers State governor, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, with his latest demolition of hotels and auctioning of vehicles for flouting his lockdown order is a pointer to the fact that Wike has some idiosyncrasies of Idi Amin in him. Aside the demolished hotels and auctioned vehicles, he had approached some social issues awkwardly in recent past. Is it how he insulted a traditional ruler? Or how he arrested Caverton helicopter pilots? And many more.

I think it high time we should tell Wike that we are no more in the military era. And that his Idi Amin penchant can’t work in a democratic environ.

We’ve seen how people who flouted the lockdown order in others states were dealt with. The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, sealed a mosque for flouting his lockdown order. Some state governments temporarily seized vehicles that flouted the lockdown order. These are mien that work in a democratic system. If you think your lockdown order is violated by a mosque, church or hotel, seal up the mosque, church or hotel temporarily. The demolition of hotels and the auctioning of vehicles who flouted the lockdown order by Wike is not only inhuman but an abuse of power and overstepping of constitutional bounds.

Governor Wike should at this point note that power is transient and that it is only the Creator of the universe who has the ingredients to rule forever. May I ask Wike where the yesteryears leaders are? If they could leave the seats of power for people like Wike, why won’t he leave the stool of power someday?

Thereafter, 5 out of the 7 suspects were cleared and asked to leave the premises. Unfortunately, as they were leaving the premises, one of the personnel on sentry duty mistook them for escaping suspects. Thus opened fire on them, which led to the death of Mr Rinji Bala.

However, a thorough investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the MOPOL personnel involved in the incident has been arrested and detained accordingly.

Operation SAFE HAVEN has condemned the sad incident. A representative of OPSH has also visited the parents of the deceased to commiserate with them. OPSH also assures the general public of justice.
