Experts predict 147,000 Americans could die of coronavirus by August

A revised forecast model relied on by the White House is now projecting 147,000 Americans could die by August - an increase of 10,000 on projections from just two days ago - due to the easing of social distancing measures.

The latest forecast from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation reflects changes in testing and mobility and social distancing measures being lifted.

The institute's director, Dr Christopher Murray, said on Tuesday that the US was 'speeding towards relaxing social distancing' and leaving the country on an 'unfortunate trajectory' as the majority of states ease their stay-at-home orders.

Currently, more than 83,000 Americans have died and 1.4 million have become infected with coronavirus.

'When we started off making projections, we had assumed that all the states were going to sort of follow the New Zealand model, which is to keep social distancing in place until transmission gets to a very low level,' Dr Murray told CNN.

'We're not doing that. We're speeding towards relaxing social distancing. People are getting the message, they're getting out.'

'And I think we'll see the numbers go up unless we see the benefits of people being cautious, wearing masks – and capacities to test, contact trace and isolate go up faster than we think they may.'

The findings also detailed the projected deaths from the hardest-hit states in the country.

New York is predicted to see 2,448 extra coronavirus fatalities due to events played out in the past two days, raising the tally to 34,068 from the May 10 estimate of 31,620.

In New Jersey, where people are still locked down on the state's Stay at Home order, deaths are projected to reduce to 14,692 from 14,752, a decrease of 60 in comparison to two days ago.

Pennsylvania will see a sharp increase of 1,500 deaths from 10,742 to 12,420 while Massachusetts is set to clock in over 2,000, taking the projected number from 7,545 to 9,629.

Illinois will see an increase in 435 deaths, taking the forecast numbers from 7,395 to 7,830, according to the model.

Why I can not marry man like Dangote – Nollywood actress

US based Nigerian actress, Oyinkansola Emmanuel has revealed why she cannot be in a relationship with someone like Africa’s richest business tycoon, Aliko Dangote if he doesn’t have some qualities she expects to see in her ideal man.

Speaking during an Instagram Live chat with Yoruba Movies Gist, the stunning actress said:

”I will appreciate a God fearing man, who knows what it takes to have a woman at home as a wife. He must be very respectful and know how to treat me well.

“I don’t want a man that will turn himself to Mike Tycson or Anthony Joshua in my marriage. Regardless of his status, he must be very tall. I believe that I am short in stature and if I marry a short man like myself, we might end up having dwarf as kids”.

Asked If she would settle for Dangote if she has the opportunity, she said: ”It is not about your wealth, achievement or your status. It is a matter of choice. ”

“I won’t feel the love like having my kind of man. Nothing a man can use to entice me that will freak me. You just have to be tall. I can’t even marry someone like Dangote because he is a busy type, he might not be with with me physically. Not every problems money can solve, sometimes you just need the man’s presence.

“I am not saying I don’t need money, a man that must marry me must be okay in his only little way, he should be able to cater for his family, not the one that will become a burden on me. Even if he doesn’t have the millions yet, I will still go with him if he is my choice,” she said.

BRT driver on the run after crushing Businesswoman to death in Lagos (photo)

A Bus Rapid  Transit, BRT, driver, Collins Nnodi is on the run after crushing a Lagos businesswoman to death in Ikorodu area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

The BRT driver reportedly crushed Mrs Grace Okeleke to death at Agric Bus Stop, in Ikorodu on Monday.

Grace is said to be the wife of Head of Public Relations, Globacom, Andrew Okeleke.

She was said to have attempted to cross the road after being dropped off by her driver around 7.20pm, when Nnodi, who was driving a bus with number plate EPE 59 XR, knocked her down and she died on the spot.

Angry mob vandalised the BRT bus after the driver fled.

The deceased was said to be a minister at the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

According to a statement from the family, “The death has been announced of Mrs Grace Okeleke, wife of the Head, Public Relations, Globacom, Mr Andrew Okeleke.

“Mrs Okeleke died in a motor accident on the Lagos Road, Ikorodu, on Monday evening. She was hit by a Lagos BRT bus with number plate EPE 59 XR.”

The statement said the deceased was crossing the road after being dropped off by her driver just after the Agric bus stop, inwards Ketu, where there was no pedestrian bridge, when she was hit by the BRT bus and died on the spot before she could be taken to hospital.

According to the statement, the late Okeleke, a businesswoman, hailed from Issele-Mkpitime, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

She was until her demise a top leader of her town’s women group in Lagos as well as a minister of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Grace Hall Parish, Ikorodu.

“Mrs Okeleke is survived by her husband and children. Burial arrangements will be announced later by her family.”

The bus was coming from Ikorodu inwards Mile 12, and she was trying to cross to the other side of the road without actually looking properly; she entered the BRT corridor to cross and there was contact.

“The woman died on the spot. But the bus man did not help matters, because he drove off out of fear of being hurt and refused to put us in the picture. Suddenly, we started getting calls that an angry mob was vandalising our vehicles, because one of our buses knocked someone down on the corridor and we quickly informed the Traffic Division of the Owutu Police Station and its personnel were dispatched in the area.”

Wanted Rivers PDP Youth leader speaks from hideout: I’m innocent

The wanted Eleme Local Government Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Youth leader, Princewill Osareojiji, who has a N5m bounty placed on his head by the Rivers State Government, has accused a serving Commissioner in Governor Nyesom Wike’s cabinet for his current travails.

Osareojiji, who spoke for the first time with Nigeriainfo fm, Port Harcourt, from hiding alleged that he was framed by some senior PDP members from Eleme and a certain Commissioner who is also his kinsman.

He also dismissed the allegation of leading some hoodlums to Prodest Hotel to attack members of COVID-19 Taskforce in Eleme.

“That day, l was called by the Manager of Prodest Hotel complaining that there were some men that came there demanding for money because the hotel had been shutdown for long. When I got there they were people I nominated into the COVID-19 Taskforce.

“They were just four persons. How can I beat up people I nominated? I told them that asking for bribes from a hotel that was not in operation was wrong and was not the mandate of the Governor. I asked them if the hotel was in operation, and even if it was, do they need to extort money from the hotel management?

“Some political leaders want to fight me, that was why they misinformed the Governor about me and Governor believe them without hearing me.

“I want the Governor to call all the chiefs, elders of PDP in Eleme to know the truth, I was set up and framed up.”.

Osareojiji alleged that the photos of those claimed to be injured and lying critically ill in the hospital bed after a fight with me and circulated to the press and in social media were all lies and stage-managed.

“Nobody beat anybody. Those photos with people on bandages in hospital are all lies. When Governor brought the Eleme Local government share of food as palliatives on Sunday, all those people feigning ill in the hospital were all sharing food and every Ward went with their own. Some of them were seen sharing food on Monday.

“How can you, after sharing food on Monday, morning and later in the evening you go and lie down on the hospital bed with your body bandaged?. If they were beaten up and hospitalized could they be seen sharing food on Monday and everybody saw them?”

Osareojiji pleaded that he would want Wike to hear his own side of the story, insisting that he is not a cultist.

“I am neither a cultist or a kidnapper as alleged. I fight cultism and kidnapping in Eleme. I am married for the past 17 years and have never been in handcuffs or arrested for any crimes. Those who want me out of the way decided to frame me by passing misinformation to the Governor.”

On what his plans are, Osareojiji said: “I want to meet with Governor to clear my name. He should give me fair hearing.”

He further clarified that he is not the owner of the demolished Prodest hotel as alleged by the state government.

“The owner of the Prodest hotel lives in Lagos. I saw him last five years ago. If I see him now, I may not recognize him. All these are framed stories concocted to destroy me”.

Legal secrets of celebrities at risk after hackers steal data from law firm and demand $21m ransom

A top law firm has notified A-list clients including Lady Gaga, Lizzo and Madonna of a major data breach after a group of hackers posted purportedly stolen documents naming them.

The notorious hacker group 'REvil', allegedly from Eastern Europe, are said to have demanded a $21million ransom after stealing private emails, contracts and personal details.

'We can confirm that we've been victimized by a cyberattack,' New York-based entertainment law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks said in a statement to Variety on Tuesday.

'We have notified our clients and our staff. We have hired the world's experts who specialize in this area, and we are working around the clock to address these matters.'

The incident is evidently a ransomware attack, in which cybercriminals use the threat of releasing the stolen data as leverage to extort payment.

According to a source, one of the firm's founders, Allen Grubman, has 'sensitive details on everything - work contracts, confidential settlements and endorsement deals for the biggest stars in New York and Hollywood.'

The group posted a contract signed by singer Christina Aguilera and another artist she worked with in 2013.

Another document related to the rapper Lizzo reportedly emerged too.

A release from REvil shows a list of files with the names of celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen, Barbara Streisand, Bette Midler and Mariah Carey.

The hackers also claim to have obtained files pertaining to other past and present clients including singers Nicki Minaj, Mary J. Blige, Jessica Simpson and Ella Mai; NFL player Cam Newton; actresses Priyanka Chopra and Idina Menzel; and rap group Run DMC.

HBO show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver was reported to be a target.

Sources told Page Six that the FBI is investigating. One told the outlet, 'The hackers got into the system while everyone was focused on the coronavirus.

'We assume, but there is no confirmation, that the hackers are Eastern European. They are demanding a $21 million ransom, and the firm is not negotiating with them.'

In the past REvil has published stolen documents after companies didn't pay up.

Emsisoft threat analyst Brett Callow told Variety it 'is simply a warning shot'.

Grubman's firm said HBO, Zoom and the Texas court system have been understanding as they have been victims of similar attacks: 'Their clients have expressed overwhelming support as they understand the firm is the latest high-profile victim of this global extortion scheme.'

Travelex is the world's largest retail currency dealer and provides travel money services for a host of partners.

Law firms are often viewed by hackers as tempting targets, with troves of sensitive documents pertaining to dozens or hundreds of clients.

REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, was also responsible for a ransomware attack against currency service Travelex in January.

The group demanded a ransom of $6million in return for not deleting sensitive customer information.

It took four weeks before the company's money transfer service and wire offering was fully up and running again, after Travelex reportedly agreed to pay a $2.3million ransom in bitcoin.

Johnny Depp's ex wife dismisses Amber Heard's domestic abuse claims, says actor is 'kind, attentive and generous'

Johnny Depp's ex-partner Vanessa Paradis has said he is a 'kind, attentive, generous and non-violent person and father', according to court documents in his libel claim.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star is suing the Sun newspaper's publisher, News Group Newspapers (NGN), and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, over an April 2018 article which referred to the 56-year-old as a 'wife-beater'.

The article related to allegations made against Mr Depp by his former wife, actress Amber Heard - which the actor strenuously denies.

Mr Depp and Ms Heard split in 2016, and are now fighting in two separate legal actions on both sides of the Atlantic.

Ms Heard, who previously alleged Depp beat her, said she feared for her life during their relationship and that he choked her and ripped out her hair. His side insist her allegations are 'a hoax', that she hit him and went so far as to 'paint on' her bruises.

Lawyers for Mr Depp are seeking to admit evidence from Ms Paradis, who has two children with the star, as part of his case against the publisher - which is due to be tried at the High Court in London in July.

David Sherborne, representing Mr Depp, said in court documents that his relationship with Ms Paradis ended in 2012, shortly before he and Ms Heard were together, 'and when he is first alleged to have been violent'.

Timeline of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp's relationship

February 3, 2015

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard marry in a private civil ceremony at their LA home, four years after they met as co-stars on the set of The Rum Diaries. The couple celebrate with a lavish reception on an idyllic private island in the Bahamas that Depp bought in 2004 for $3.6 million.

April 21, 2015

Heard breaches Australia's biosecurity laws after she and Depp fail to declare their two Yorkshire terriers when they arrive Down Under on a private jet for the filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Charges of illegally importing animals are dropped but Heard admits falsifying quarantine documents and is placed on a $1,000 one month good behavior bond.

May 23, 2016

Heard files for divorce after 15 months of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Four days later a judge issues a temporary restraining order against Depp over domestic violence allegations. Pictures of Heard's alleged injuries hit the tabloids but the LAPD finds no evidence of a crime.

August 16, 2016

Heard retracts her allegations as she and Depp reach a $7 million divorce settlement. Their marriage was 'intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love,' the former actors say in a statement. 'There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm'.

December 18, 2018

The Washington Post publishes an op-ed by Heard, an ambassador for women's rights at for the American Civil Liberties Union, urging support for women who suffer domestic violence. 'Two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture's wrath for women who speak out,' Heard writes.

March 1, 2019

Despite not being named in the article, Depp files a $50 million defamation suit in Fairfax Circuit Court, Virginia saying it insinuated he was an abuser and got him fired from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Depp dismisses Heard's allegations as a 'hoax' and claims he was actually the victim of her violence.

April 10, 2019

Heard files a motion to dismiss the complaint, cataloging more than a dozen instances of abuse between 2012, when she moved in with Depp, and the May 2016 bust up that preceded their divorce. She refers to him as 'the monster' in the 300-plus page filing.

May 20, 2019

Depp hits back against the motion to dismiss claiming Heard painted bruises on her face, scrubbed metadata and fabricated evidence against him. He denies ever abusing any woman and says of her allegations: 'I will continue to deny them for the rest of my life.'

In a witness statement, Ms Paradis said: 'I have known Johnny for more than 25 years.

'We've been partners for 14 years and we raised our two children together.

'Through all these years I've known Johnny to be a kind, attentive, generous, and non-violent person and father.'

She added: 'He was never violent or abusive to me.'

At a hearing conducted remotely over Skype today, Mr Depp's lawyers also said they wish to adduce evidence from actress Winona Ryder, who was in a relationship with the star in the 1990s.

In her statement, Ms Ryder said: 'I cannot wrap my head around (Ms Heard's) accusations.

'He was never, never violent towards me. He was never, never abusive at all towards me.'

Mr Depp's lawyers also wish to call evidence from a former personal assistant to Ms Heard, and a mechanic who worked for the couple before their acrimonious divorce.

Just Like HIV, Coronavirus May Never Go Away - WHO Chief, Mike Ryan

As people around the world wonder when the coronavirus might go away, a World Health Organization (WHO) chief says there is every chance the virus might not disappear, just like HIV.

HIV/AIDS was first clinically observed in 1981 in the United States and almost 40 years after, no vaccine or permanent cure has been developed for the virus which has so far killed nearly a million people.

Ryan while speaking in an online briefing on May 13, said the virus may just become one of the known viruses that kills people annually around the world.

“This virus just may become another endemic virus in our communities and this virus may never go away. HIV hasn’t gone away. I’m not comparing the two diseases but I think it is important that we’re realistic. I don’t think anyone can predict when or if this disease will disappear.

I think there are no promises in this and there are no dates. This disease may settle into a long problem, or it may not be” Ryan said.
