Brazil health minister resigns amid COVID-19 crisis

Brazilian Health Minister Nelson Teich resigned on Friday over what a ministry official said was “incompatibility” with President Jair Bolsonaro’s approach to fighting the country’s spiralling coronavirus crisis.

Teich, a 62-year-old oncologist, served in the far-right president’s cabinet for less than a month.

His predecessor, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, resigned on April 16, also after clashing with Bolsonaro, a vocal critic of the stay-at-home measures Mandetta recommended to contain the virus.

Teich and Bolsonaro reportedly disagreed over use of chloroquine to treat the new coronavirus. Bolsonaro touts the drug as a promising treatment, despite studies casting doubt on its effectiveness and raising concerns about its safety.

The ministry announced Teich’s resignation in a brief statement, saying a press conference would be held later.

The news drew anti-Bolsonaro protests. In Rio de Janeiro, residents banged pots and pans out their windows, shouting “Get out, Bolsonaro!”

Brazil has emerged as one of the countries hit hardest in the pandemic, with a sharply rising death toll that has reached nearly 14,000.

Netherlands Government advises single people to seek ‘S.e x buddy during Lockdown

Single men and women in the Netherlands have been advised to find a s.e.x buddy for those seeking intimacy during the coronavirus lockdown.

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) said that single people should come to an agreement with one other person if they are seeking intimacy. In the guidance issued on May 14, RIVM said that s.e.x with a regular partner is possible because they are very close and it is practically impossible to avoid each other physically.

The guidance comes after critics said there was no sex advice for singles, BBC reports.

RIVM said “it makes sense that as a single [person] you also want to have physical contact” during the pandemic. However, precautions should be taken to minimise the risk of coronavirus exposure, should single people choose to engage in sexual contact.

“Discuss how best to do this together,” the RIVM guidance says.

“For example, meet with the same person to have physical or s.e.x.u.al contact (for example, a cuddle buddy or ‘s.e.x buddy’), provided you are free of illness.

“Make good arrangements with this person about how many other people you both see. The more people you see, the greater the chance of (spreading) the coronavirus.”

The RIVM has also issued advice for people whose long-term partners suspect they have contracted the coronavirus.

“Don’t have s.e.x with your partner if they have been isolated because of (suspected) coronavirus infection,” it says.

“S e.x with yourself or with others at a distance is possible,” it adds, suggesting “erotic stories” and “m.a s.t u.r b.a.t.i.n.g together” as possible solutions.

The Netherlands has been on what the government describes as an “intelligent lockdown” since 23 March, allowing up to three visitors into homes on the strict condition that they keep their distance.

On Monday, the Netherlands began the first stage of a five-phase lockdown exit plan. As part of the first phase, libraries, hairdressers, nail bars, beauticians, massage salons and places providing occupational therapy were allowed to reopen from 11 May.

“The Flash” actor Logan Williams died of drug overdose

Logan Williams, the 16-year-old actor who died suddenly in April, overdosed on fentanyl, according to his mother.

In an interview with the New York Post, Logan’s mother Marlyse Williams said her son had a three-year battle with addiction. She hopes by speaking out on it that she can help stem the rising opioid crisis, where teen mortality rates continue to rise.

“His death is not going to be in vain. He’s going to help a lot of people down the road.”

Marlyse said that she discovered Logan was using marijuana at age 13 and eventually progressed into harder dugs. She said she does not know for sure when he began using fentanyl, a synthetic opioid pain reliever that creates a “heroin-like effect” on the body, according to the CDC.

Logan “was in complete denial because he was so ashamed,” of his addiction, Marlyse said, adding that he had been living in a group home after spending a month in a facility in British Columbia last year.

“I did everything humanly possible — everything a mother could do,” Marlyse told the New York Post. “I did everything but handcuff him to me to try to keep him safe.”

Logan Williams landed his very first audition when he was ten years old playing the part of Jack Spehn in the Hallmark movie “Color of Rain”. He later starred on “The Flash” where he played the young Barry Allen.

FG to submit list of school feeding vendors to EFCC

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development said the list of all participating vendors in the modified School Feeding Programme will be submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Humanitarian Affairs Minister, Sadiya Farouq, who said this at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 daily news briefing on Friday in Abuja, noted that it was for the purpose of transparency and accountability.

She said the modified school feeding programme was being funded by the Federal Government, implemented by states and facilitated by the ministry.

The minister said it was targeted at heads of households, guardians and caregivers of the pupils, already benefiting from the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP).

She noted that the vendors had been on the programme since inception and that they were not new.

She said that the ministry had also invited Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to help with the monitoring of events.

Farouq, speaking on the recently-launched NHGSFP Intervention in the FCT, acknowledged the role of the United Nations World Food Programme in Nigeria in providing technical support.

“We are not spending N679 million per day as reported by the media. That figure is inaccurate.

“The take-home rations are worth N4,200 per household and are planned as a monthly COVID-19 intervention, for 3.1 million households in the participating states.

“To reach the households, we are using the various school registers, which contain addresses of all the pupils, we are also using SUBEB databases.

“Also, since schools are community-based, it is easy for children to be identified/verified in the various communities,” she said.

Meanwhile, she said payment of Npower Nigeria Volunteers’ outstanding stipends was in the final stages of processing and by next week, the beneficiaries would get their payments.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the PTF on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said the CACOVID account was not under the Federal Government control.

“They are funds sourced for by the business community; they are the sole managers of the fund,” he said.

Mustapha, while explaining how private donations toward the pandemic were being managed in the country, said that the second source of funding was from the NNPC and its partners.

“They are not even collecting cash. The total pledge was about N21billion, and part of their contributions was the ThisDay Dome,” he said.

Earlier, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire said the ministry was able to persuade Mrs Susan Idoko-Okpe, now popularly known as the “Benue Lady”, to allow a test sample to be taken to the laboratory for testing on Thursday.

Ehanire said the result was being awaited and would be given to her in person.

“Please note that, while some patients may disclose their result by themselves, the FMoH cannot do so, except with the permission of the person concerned,” he said.

15 Covid-19 patients who escaped from Kwara Isolation Center rearrested

No fewer than fifteen Covid-19 patients who have tested positive on Friday attempted to escape from Isolation centre at Sobi specialist hospital in Ilorin.

Saturday Vanguard reliably gathered that the patients jumped over the fence of the hospital to escape from the isolation centre.

It however took some hours for the security officers who launched their network around the area before they could be rearrested and returned to the isolation center.

According to a credible source who spoke with Saturday Vanguard, “it’s true that about fifteen of them attempted to escape from the isolation center this morning, but as I’m talking with you the security officers have been able to get all of them back to the isolation center”

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor and Spokesman of Covid-19 Technical Committee in the state, Rafiu Ajakaye confirmed the incident in a press statement issued last night.

The statement reads, “Earlier today, Friday, May 15th, 2020, the government’s intelligence network uncovered a plot by some COVID-19 patients who sneaked into the state to escape.

“This attempt was promptly foiled leading to arrest and return of the patients who had already scaled the fence.

“The government is dismayed that these persons were among the imported cases who intentionally violated the interstate lockdown and came into the state.

“Security has been further beefed up at our isolation centre. The government restates that COVID-19 is not a death sentence and there is no reason why anyone would want to escape and put their own lives and the lives of other people at risk.” the statement concluded.

"I Don’t Want To Be A Rep, Senator Or Governor" - MC Oluomo

The chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Musiliu Akinsanya has dispelled rumours that he is planning to contest for a political office in Lagos State in the future.

The known All Progressives Congress’s supporter, however, said he is fully in “support” of the party in government in the state.

The union boss popularly known as MC Oluomo made the clarification while speaking with Funmi Iyanda on Public Eye.

“The constitution permits anyone to contest,” Akinsanya said in Yoruba. “But count me out of it (contesting).”

“I don’t want to be a rep, a senator or a governor,” he said.

Akinsanya also said on Public Eye that NURTW has set up a committee to ensure fares in different parts of the state do not get too prohibitive for commuters following the state government’s directive cutting passenger limits for different types of vehicles after coronavirus lockdown in the state was washed off.

The government also imposed a statewide ban on the operations of commercial motorcyclists.

Lagos State has the highest coronavirus burden in Nigeria with 2099 cases as of May 14.

“I gave out my number at a recent forum so that people can call to report cases of hike in fare,” Akinsanya said. “We have also set up a task force to that effect.”

Presidency Frowns As Some States Reopen Mosques, Churches

In one fell swoop, four states in the North – Borno, Gombe, Adamawa and Zamfara – on Thursday reopened Mosques and Churches.

It was a major easing of the lockdown imposed to curb Coronavirus spread.

The Federal Government frowned at the situation having not been consulted as expected, in line with the COVID-19 protocol.

Besides, the Federal Government believes that the situation of the virus spread had not reached the stage of lowering the guard.

Coronavirus cases in the country last night surpassed the 5,000 mark, with close to 200 deaths recorded.

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 Control has resolved to engage with the governors.

Minister for Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed said: “We are always working together with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF). We believe that the governors won’t do anything that will put in jeopardy all we have achieved in the last few weeks of lockdown.

So, I think it is better that we continue the engagement and I am sure that the chairman of the taskforce who is constantly in touch with the governments will take up this matter and we hope that he will be able to give a feedback.”

Diezani's House Becomes COVID-19 Isolation Centre In Lagos

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday, May 15, 2020, handed over a property forfeited by former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke to the Lagos State government for use as an isolation centre for COVID-19 patients.

The property consisting six flats of three bedrooms and a boys’ quarter was forfeited by Mrs Allison-Madueke following an order of Lagos State Federal High in 2017.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Lagos Zonal Head of the EFCC, Mohammed Rabo stated that the gesture was part of the Commission’s social responsibility efforts towards the fight against the spread of Corona virus.

“In addition to our mandate to fight economic and financial crimes, the Commission is committed and ready to render essential services that may be required of it in the fight against covid-19. Therefore, Lagos State should not hesitate to call on the Commission anytime the need for such essential service arises,” he said.

In his remarks, the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, thanked the Commission for the gesture, noting that it was a welcome collaboration between the Federal and Lagos State Government.

Falz Challenge: Immigration Suspends Transfer Of Female Officers

The Nigeria Immigration Service has suspended the transfer of five of its officers to Borno, Yobe, Kano and other states for participating in a social media competition known as #Bopdaddy challenge.

The NIS made this known in a series of tweets on its Twitter handle on Friday, saying the transfer was put on hold pending the outcome of an investigation into their conduct.

The five officers – Priscilla Irabor, Catherine Bakura, Blessing Udida, Binti Attabor, and Ockiya Eneni – were transferred to states far from their duty posts for participating in the #Bopdaddy challenge initiated by musician, Folarinde Falana aka Falz.

Eneni was moved from the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card Production Facility to the Borno State Command.

The service transferred Irabor from the Lagos State Command to the Nigeria Immigration Training School, Kano, while Attabor was posted from the service headquarters in Abuja to Yobe State Command.

Udida from the FCT Command was sent to the Akwa Ibom State Command while Bakura was transferred from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to the NIS Training School Ahoada, Rivers State.

After their transfer, there was an outrage on social media, with Nigerians, including Falz, the son of Femi Falana (SAN), urging the NIS to reverse its position.

Reacting to the outcry, the NIS tweeted, “The attention of the Comptroller General Muhammad Babandede MFR has been drawn to some trending matters on some social media platforms regarding the deployment of some of our Personnel to some Formations across the country.

“It is important to note that staff deployment remains a vital practice of regimented organisations such as ours and should be seen as such.

“As an agency, we maintain zero tolerance to any matters bordering on offences against discipline among members of our workforce irrespective of gender.

“We have a high premium for staff development and indeed encourage personal efforts but that must be within the confines of our rules and regulations.

“The matter involving the Personnel in question is still being investigated and therefore, the Comptroller General has directed that the earlier Posting Order be put on hold pending the conclusion of the investigation.”

The #Bopdaddy Challenge involves people video recording themselves transforming into a variety of clothes.

The five women had been seen changing from their immigration uniforms into clothes that the immigration authorities deemed too revealing.

Provide My COVID-19 Test Results - Dokpesi Jnr tells NCDC

Chairman of DAAR Communications Plc, Raymond Dokpesi Jnr, has recovered from coronavirus.

Announcing the improvement in his health in an appreciation letter published on Friday, the young Dokpesi said
officials of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control called him on Thursday night to inform him that he tested negative for coronavirus, adding that two other family members have also recovered from the infection.

He noted that while receiving treatment at the Abuja isolation facility, he started feeling well when the combination of azithromycin, chloroquine and zinc were administered to him.

He said, “I wish to express my most profound appreciation to the very professional and dedicated staff of the NCDC and the university of Abuja Teaching Hospital medical team who attended to me and members of my family for the duration of our isolation at their Centre in Gwagwalada.

“With praise and glory to almighty God, I started feeling immediate improvement in my wellbeing once the combination of azithromycin, chloroquine and zinc were administered to me by Wednesday 29th April 2020.

“My senses of smell and taste which were lost since the time I arrived at the facility were restored by Friday 1st May 2020. All my vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation improved and have consistently shown excellent readings since. The oxygen machine which was brought to my room became redundant.

“However, whilst I can attest to my improvement in physical health and wellbeing, I regret to say that since my initial test to date, I have never seen any documentary evidence of any test result. I take it in trust and good faith that the NCDC pronounced me COVID-19 positive and that they have now also pronounced me COVID-negative. I will appreciate it if the documentary records of the various tests on me and members of my family are made available for our medical records.”

Kenyan woman poisons her children and hangs self, leaves suicide note blaming husband

A 33-year-old woman, identified as Jane Mwende Nguthu, on Wednesday night committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Komarock, Nairobi County.

The woman hanged herself with an iron box cable shortly after her neighbours rescued her children whom she had given a poisonous substance.

The two children, a boy aged seven and a girl aged 3, were taken to Komarock Modern Hospital where they are in serious condition.

The woman took to hanging herself with the iron box cable after the poisonous substance she also took failed to kill her.

The scene of the crime was visited by Kayole police officers who found the remainder of the poisonous solution in the kitchen.

The police also found a suicide note in the woman’s bedroom in which she claimed she was tired of being mistreated by her husband.
Her husband, Edimond Maubi, said they just had a small family conflict and they had not talked for almost a day.

The man said it did not occur to him that she would resort to such extreme measures.

Kanye West’s former bodyguard reveals the ‘ridiculous rules’ Kanye imposed while he worked for him

Kanye West’s former bodyguard Steve Sanulis has revealed some of the ‘ridiculous rules’ the rapper made him stick to while he was working for him.

Steve, who got into being a celebrity bodyguard after working as a stripper and a policeman (yes, at the same time), opened up about some of the demands Kanye asked him for.

Speaking on the Hollywood Raw podcast with Dax Holt and Adam Glyn, Steve revealed that some of Ye’s demands didn’t make much sense.

He explained: ‘He wanted you to stay 10 paces behind him on a city street. So obviously if someone is going to come up and do something, by the time I try to run up and prevent it, it would have already happened.’

Steve appeared to start his employment with Kanye on the wrong footing after committing a faux pas in Kanye’s eyes on his very first day.  He explained: ‘The first day I met him…it was fashion week. I was supposed to meet him at the studio.

Again, that was our first interaction. He went for the first option.’ Steve also let slip that he thinks Kanye was ‘one of my least favourite people to work with over the course of time’, and that he suspects he and Kim Kardashian would call the paparazzi on themselves.
