Breaking: Three Dubai evacuees test positive for Covid-19

Three of the 256 evacuees from Dubai have tested positive for coronavirus.

Lagos Commissioner Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed this on Sunday morning on his official twitter handle.

He said the positive evacuees have been moved to one of the isolation centres.

The evacuees have been observing the mandatory 14-day isolation in Lagos, having arrived on May 6.

Lockdown: Nigeria records rise in r.a.p.e, domestic abuse

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has decried the increasing cases of r.a.p.e, incest and domestic abuse among Nigerians during the stay-at-home order due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, said this in an interview with journalists in Abuja during the distribution of palliatives to orphanages and other partners of the agency operating shelters for trafficked victims.

The palliatives were donated by the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Plateau State, to the Federal Capital Territory Administration, which thereafter gave the items to NAPTIP.


Okah-Donli said the latest case recorded was a man in Abuja who r3ped his four-year-old daughter and was caught and reported by his wife.

She said, “Domestic and s3xual abuses have been crazy. The cases are increasing. I think some men are suffering from cabin fever. They are not used to staying at home with their wives. So the more their wives are in their faces, the more they get angry and beat them up. We recorded over 30 cases during a certain period.

“Even r3pe, sodomy; the last we got was a father who r3ped his four-year-old daughter and was caught by his wife. We have had many dirty cases recently. We cannot keep the suspects in custody because of Covid-19.

“They have been granted bail but as soon as we can prosecute them, we will start to do that.”

Okah-Donli said the relief items were donated to them by the FCTA, adding “and we gave them out to seven of our partners. This gesture will continue as we get more from the authorities.”

The AANI Vice-President, Hajiya Aisha Dankani, said the palliatives included bags of 10kg rice, 500 packets of noodles and 30 packets each containing 50 bottles of cooking oil.

She said, “We have chosen the FCT, Lagos and Kano as the first three states to reach out to. We hope that God will see us through this pandemic period.

“We believe the lockdown has otherwise affected a number of vulnerable Nigerians and for the first batch, we have selected these three states.

General Opaleye’s son, Muyiwa murdered in as police begin hunt for killers

The Lagos State Police Command has started an investigation into the murder of Muyiwa Opaleye, son of a former military administrator of Ondo State, Brig-Gen Ekundayo Opaleye.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the victim’s killers would be brought to book.

The 40-year-old Muyiwa, who lived in Victoria Island, Lagos, was reported to have been trailed to a joint at Aguda, Surulere, where he was hanging out with some friends.

The assailants, said to be about four in number, reportedly arrived in the area in a Sports Utility Vehicle, which they parked on an adjoining street.


They were said to have trekked to the joint through a bush path.

The men then went for the victim in the crowd and rained bullets on him.

In the commotion that followed, the group of friends ran in different directions as the late Muyiwa was left in a pool of his blood.

He was later rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Elkana said the deceased was suspected to have had issues with some people.

He also noted that the victim tried to escape, but was chased by the assailants and shot dead.

Elkana said, “On Wednesday, around 1pm, there was a distress call from Adekunle Kuye Street, Aguda, that one Muyiwa Opaleye, who lived at V/I Lagos was trailed to Aguda and when he reached No 29, Adekunle Kuye Street, Aguda, the victim rushed out of his car and ran through a footpath.

“But his assailants chased him and gunned him down. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead. It is suspected that he must have had issues with some people. The corpse has been removed to the mortuary for autopsy. Investigations ongoing.”

Dele Momodu defies coronavirus, hosts virtual party

Media mogul, Dele Momodu, attained the age of 60 on Saturday, May 16, 2020, and though the rampaging coronavirus has put a hold on public gatherings and parties, he showed he is a showbiz impresario as he hosted a well attended virtual birthday party.

The event which held from 1pm to 5pm was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, a former Ghanaian President, John Mahama, Liberia’s Vice President, Jewel Taylor; Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Sen Dino Melaye, Tony Elumelu, Banky W, Sade Okoya, Larry Izamoje, Nduka Obaigbena, Chief Alex Duduyemi and Pastor Tunde Bakare, among others. There were also performances by top musicians including K1 de Ultimate and Sir Shina Peters.

Some of the personalities also called in sharing their experiences with Momodu and how they met him. It was accolades upon accolades as the calls quickly showed that the host is a man of immense goodwill. Callers include Rotimi Amaechi, Rev- Mother Esther Ajayi, Segun Odegbami and Dame Abimbola Fashola.

Momodu is the publisher of Ovation International Magazine and has garnered several decades of high society and celebrity reportage. He cut his teeth as a journalist at the late Chief MKO Abiola-owned African Concord magazine, and has gone on to build an impressive network of sources and confidantes.

How 16yrs Old Girl Killed Her Mum & Brother, With Help Of Boyfriend She Met Online

A 17-year-old boy is set to be charged with murder for allegedly helping his 16-year-old online girlfriend kill her mother and brother with special needs by torching their family home.

Kaleo Pangelian was arrested by Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at around 4.30pm on Thursday and will now face an extradition hearing for his charges in Georgia.

He faces charges for two counts of murder in the deaths of Gerald Walton, 21, and Tasha Vandiver, 46, whose bodies were found in a house fire in Monroe County, Georgia, on February 27.

His girlfriend Candace Walton, 16, was charged in March with arson and two counts of murder for their deaths. It was initially believed she had died in the fire.



Police now believe Pangelian helped Walton to kill her brother and mother before she began her journey to Oregon to start a new life with him.

‘After a thorough investigation, Monroe County Sheriff's Office Investigators obtained evidence to also charge Candace Walton's boyfriend, 17-year-old Kaleo D. Pangelinan, with two (2) counts of murder,’ said a statement from Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Walton was thought to be dead when police found two badly burned bodies in the house fire on Old Zebulon Road around 3:30 a.m. on February 27 and the girl's mother was missing.

Emergency services who were called to a blaze at a property said the bodies were 'burned beyond recognition'.

Initially, the fire was not believed to be intentionally set.

The other body was identified as her brother Gerald, who has special needs.

Officers reported Vandiver missing and her vehicle, a white 2007 Chevrolet Malibu, unaccounted for.

However, a nationwide lookout for the car led Kentucky police to locate the vehicle later that afternoon more than 450 miles away in McCracken County.

When they pulled the vehicle over, they found Candace alive behind the wheel and heading to Oregon, where her boyfriend Pangelian lives.

Kentucky Sheriff Brad Freeman told the Macon Telegraph that officers found 'some incriminating things' in the car.

She was arrested and charged with arson, theft by taking, and the murders of her brother and the unidentified female, who was then thought to be her missing mother. The body was later identified as Vandiver.

The Sheriff confirmed Monroe County investigators had traveled to Kentucky and spoken to the suspect but would not divulge 'what kind of statement she made'.

The motive for the crime has not been released but Walton has since appeared in court and her charges are pending. She has been charged as an adult.

The investigation is ongoing.

Buhari Receives COVID19 Cure From Madagascar, As Their President Confirms It's Effective

The wonder herbal drug which Madagascar has been usinh to treat it's citizens infected with the dreaded COVID-19 has reached Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari received portions of the drug from Guinea Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo on Saturday.

Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, quoted Buhari as saying the drug will go through the verification process which other remedies for the disease are being subjected to.

“We have our institutions, systems and processes in the country. Any such formulations should be sent to them for verification. I will not put it to use without the endorsement of our institutions,” Buhari said.

The drug, which is branded as herbal tea and named COVID-Organics, was launched on April 20, with its main ingredient being sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua), a plant of Asian origin from where the antimalarial drug, artemisinin, came.

Over 100 COVID-19 patients in Madagascar have recovered after being treated with the herbal drug.

During the launch, Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina had said: “All trials and tests have been conducted and its effectiveness in reducing the elimination of symptoms has been proven for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 in Madagascar.”

Foreign airlines may resume flights to Lagos, Abuja airports by June

Some foreign airlines are allegedly planning to resume flights to Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt airports despite the ban on international commercial flights by the Federal Government in a bid to halt COVID-19 spread.

Although some of the airlines said their plans could change, it was learnt on Saturday that some of the international carriers had already scheduled some flights to Nigeria from June.

But the Federal Ministry of Aviation declared that such plans would not work until the flight ban was lifted.

Also, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria said no foreign or local carrier could take decision to fly to or within Nigeria if the government had not opened the airspace.

It was learnt on Saturday that Lufthansa Airlines had included Abuja and Port Harcourt among its 20 long-haul routes to begin flight operations in June.

It was learnt that the carrier had made its first batch of flight reservation available in its booking system.

The company plans to resume long-haul flights in June from Frankfurt to Abuja, Port Harcourt, Toronto, Mexico City, Tel Aviv, Riyadh, Bahrain, Johannesburg, Dubai and Mumbai, among others.

Virgin Atlantic recently announced that beginning from May 16, services for its summer schedule flights from March 28, 2021 would be on sale, as it had scheduled flights from London Heathrow to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

But senior Ministry of Aviation officials said although it was nice to hear that airlines were making plans to resume operations, such would not happen until the ban was lifted.

The FG on May 6 extended the suspension of both local and international flights by four weeks.

The government had earlier halted commercial flights by two weeks before it announced the four-week extension.

The Director, Public Affairs, FMA, James Odaudu, said the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had not lifted the ban on commercial flights, whether local or foreign.

He said, “They (foreign airlines) can’t operate scheduled passenger flights as long as the ban remains. The PTF on COVID-19 has the final say on when flights can resume, based on the level of control of the pandemic.

“Of course, we in the sector can’t wait for activities to resume at the airports to forestall further loss of jobs and revenue. Aviation has been one of the hardest hit by the pandemic and it will be a great relief to have flights resume.”

The President, ATSSSAN, Ilitrus Ahmadu, said no airlines could take decisions for Nigeria on when flights would start.

“It is not the foreign carriers that will decide for our country. So it is their business and they cannot say they can fly into the country without government opening the airspace.”

Sierra Leone appoints Nigerian as Head of COVID-19 Task Force

The sterling qualities of Nigerian graduates and professionals serving in the Technical Aids Corps programme has been recognised with the appointment of a Nigerian medical practitioner, Dr. Laoluwa Adejayan, as the Head, COVID-19 Task Force in Sierra Leone.

Announcing Adejayan’s appointment, the Sierra Leonean authorities hinged their action on the fact that he had been adjudged the best foreign medical practitioner in the country in recent years.

Following the appointment, the Sierra Leonean government increased his salary to $20,000 per month, a 100 per cent increase.

Adejayan, a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, had reportedly served in Bayelsa State after his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme before transferring his services to the West African country under the Technical Aids Corps scheme, in 2012.

The scheme is currently headed a seasoned administrator from Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Dr. Pius Osunyikanmi

In a letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari informing him of the development, Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, described Adejayan as a good ambassador of Nigeria in the country.

According to the President, Adejayan had over the years proved to be a well-trained, brilliant and hard working doctor.

Elated by the appointment, President Buhari congratulated Adejayan for being a good ambassador of the country.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Femi Adesina, Buhari said the Federal Government was proud of his hard work in a foreign land.

China admits to destroying early coronavirus samples, says action was taken due to safety concerns

China has acknowledged it destroyed early samples of COVID-19, confirming a claim put forward by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo late last month.

On Friday, Liu Dengfeng, a supervisor with China’s National Health Commission, admitted that ‘the Chinese government issued an order on January 3 to dispose of coronavirus samples’ at unauthorized laboratories, according to Newsweek.

But Liu denied that the samples were destroyed as part of a cover-up, insisting that they were disposed of so as to ‘prevent risk to laboratory biological safety and prevent secondary disasters caused by unidentified pathogens.’

He stated that the labs were ‘unauthorized’ to handle such samples, and they had to be terminated in order to comply with Chinese public health laws.

Liu did not specify how many labs destroyed coronavirus samples.

The admission comes amid souring diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China over the COVID-19 outbreak – which originated in Wuhan late last year.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last month accused the Asian superpower of not being transparent about spread of the coronavirus.

‘The Chinese Communist Party still has not shared the virus sample from inside of China with the outside world, making it impossible to track the disease’s evolution,’ Pompeo stated at a briefing on April 22.

‘We strongly believe that the Chinese Communist Party did not report the outbreak of the new coronavirus in a timely fashion to the World Health Organisation,’ he added.

‘Even after the CCP did notify the WHO of the coronavirus outbreak, China didn’t share all of the information that it had.’

Pompeo continued: ‘Instead it covered up how dangerous the disease is, It didn’t report sustained human-to-human transmission for a month until it was in every province inside of China. It censored those who tried to warn the world in order to halt the testing of new samples, and it destroyed existing samples.’

As of Saturday afternoon, more than 4.59 million people around the world have tested positive to COVID-19. At least 309,000 have died.

The United States has been disproportionately affected by the disease, with the country accounting for almost a quarter of global cases and deaths.

Earlier this week, President Trump gave an interview with Fox Business Network, where he claimed he was ‘very disappointed in China’.

The coronavirus outbreak originated in Wuhan in December and was spreading silently as the U.S. and China signed a Phase 1 trade deal hailed by Trump as a major achievement.

‘They should have never let this happen. So I make a great trade deal and now I say this doesn’t feel the same to me. The ink was barely dry and the plague came over. And it doesn’t feel the same to me.’

Trump’s pique extended to Chinese President Xi Jinping, with whom, Trump says repeatedly, he has a good relationship.

‘I just – right now I don’t want to speak to him. I don’t want to speak to him,’ Trump said.

Meanwhile, a Department of Homeland Security report shared last Sunday revealed US officials believe China ‘intentionally concealed the severity’ of the pandemic in early January and hoarded medical supplies.

The four-page report dated May 1 that was obtained by the Associated Press notes that China downplayed the virus publicly but increased imports and decreased exports of medical supplies.

The document accuses China of covering their tracks by ‘denying there were export restrictions and obfuscating and delaying provision of its trade data.’

It lends weight to a leaked dossier drawn up by the Five Eyes intelligence alliance which describes how Beijing made whistleblowers ‘disappear’, destroyed early virus samples and scrubbed the internet of any mention of the disease in the early stages.

The 15-page document brands Beijing’s secrecy over the pandemic an ‘assault on international transparency’ and points to cover-up tactics deployed by the regime.

It claims that the Chinese government silenced its most vocal critics and scrubbed any online scepticism about its handling of the health emergency from the internet.

China has roundly come under fire for suppressing the scale of its early outbreak which did not afford other nations time to react before the disease hit their shores.

Gunmen Storm UNIJOS Staff Quarters; Kill Lecturer, Kidnap 6-Year-Old Daughter

Some gunmen attacked the University of Jos Staff Quarters on Friday night shot dead a lecturer identified as Dr Nendi Drengkat.

It was learnt that the gunmen also kidnapped Drengkat’s six-year-old daughter in the attack.



Chairman of the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr Lazarus Maigoro, confirmed the incident to The Punch in Jos on Saturday.

The ASUU Chairman said, “I have just returned from the University of Jos Staff Quarters where the attack took place.

“Some gunmen went there last night and shot dead one of our colleagues of the Faculty of Education, Dr Nendi Drengkat.

“The gunmen also went away with his little daughter of about six years and are now asking for N10 million ransom.

“The State Commissioner of Police has visited the staff quarters and he said he would investigate the matter. The incident is really very unfortunate.”

WHO says Africa will escape huge coronavirus death toll because its population is young

Africa's young and fit population will help the continent avoid an enormous death toll from Covid-19, according to figures from the World Health Organization.

Analysis from the UN's international public health body predicts more than a quarter of a billion Africans will contract the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus within a year.

It claims that the Covid-19 death toll will likely reach up to 190,000 -- significantly fewer than the forecast loss of life in America, and roughly on a par with Europe.

Africa has a population of around 1.2billion people whereas Europe is home to just 700million individuals. Africa has around 900million more residents than the US.


The US has already recorded more than 86,000 fatalities related to the pandemic, and the death toll could reach 225,000 by August, according to the US-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

The WHO's mathematical model studied 47 nations and expects over a fifth (22 per cent) of Africans to contract COVID-19, a figure totalling around 264 million.

Of these infections, up to 44million people will express symptoms of COVID-19 and up to 5.5million will likely be admitted to hospital.

Approximately 140,000 people would express severe COVID-19 symptoms, with 89,000 becoming critically ill.

Some 150,000 lives would be lost as a result, but this figure could be as high as 190,000, the estimates indicate.

Scientists also warn the virus will be hard to eradicate completely in Africa and may linger in communities for several years.

Egypt is the African country with the highest death toll so far, with 571 Covid-19-related fatalities. South Africa has the most infections, with almost 13,000 confirmed cases.

Data analyst Humphrey Karamagi told The Guardian that Africa has a young population compared to other parts of the world and this will help keep the transmission rate down and reduce deaths.

Africa also has low levels of obesity which doubles the risk of dying from COVID-19, according to a recent British study.

'The biggest factor that plays out in our numbers is age,' explained Mr Karamagi. 'We also have very few people who are obese, although the numbers are rising. But not at the levels in the US.'

The piece of research, powered by the UN's dedicated health branch, did not include data from Djibouti, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Somalia, Sudan and Tunisia.

Researchers say their analysis takes into account variation in cultures, societies and healthcare systems.

The WHO study, which has been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication in BMJ Global Health, claims the spread of COVID-19 throughout Africa will be considerably slower than Europe and the US.

Despite a lesser impact than other parts of the world, the knock-on effect on public health will be significant, the analysis claims.

A rise in hospital admissions will strain services, and programmes dedicated to tackling other health concerns such as HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and malnutrition, will suffer most from the added strain induced by COVID-19, the study authors say.

Smaller African nations will be most at risk, with Mauritius likely to be the hardest hit.

Seychelles and Equatorial Guinea will also be severely affected, with the scientists expecting them to the second and third most infected countries per capita, respectively.

Of Africa's largest countries, the research predicts Cameroon, South Africa, and Algeria would be most at risk from severe outbreaks.

Nigeria is set to have the largest number of infections overall but not the most per capita, by virtue of having by the largest population in Africa with almost 200 million individuals, approximately a sixth of all Africans are from Nigeria.

Algeria and South Africa will have the second and third highest amount of infections.

However, less urbanised countries such as Angola, Botswana and Mozambique are poorly connected and infection spread is therefore likely to be limited.

But if the virus does spread in these countries, they are likely to be harder hit.

Previous research conducted by a team of African scientists found Djibouti -- a country with a high population density -- is predicted to be the African nation with most infections per capita. The most recent WHO analysis did not include Djibouti.

This previous study, released last month, found that more than 16million Africans will likely be infected by the end of June.

It expects 32.8 people per 1,000 in the East African nation to be infected.

Swaziland (26.8), Morocco (11.97), Algeria (9.8) and Cote d'Ivorie (6.65) make up the five countries with the most predicted infections per capita, according to this independent analysis.

Researchers agree that the most urbanised and wealthy countries will experience a faster growth of the epidemic.

Countries such as Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt were singled out as fitting this criteria, but none of these likely hard-hit nations featured in the WHO analysis.

Limited capacity to test and diagnose patients and poor data collection will hinder efforts to stamp out the disease, especially in rural areas, according to the World Health Organization. 

'These system capacity challenges highlight the need to ensure the success of the containment measures to avoid the need for mitigation measures that, despite relatively fewer cases expected in the Region, will be difficult to institute,' the researchers write in their study.

Husband cuts off wife's nose for asking for divorce

An Afghanistan man cuts off his wife’s nose with a kitchen knife after she asked for divorce amid a surge in domestic violence triggered by the coronavirus lockdown.

In a news reported by The Daily Mail, The mother of a seven-year-old boy was trying to leave her abusive husband, who had prevented her from moving out of their house in the southwestern province of Paktika.

The attack on the 24-year-old victim happened earlier this month and police arrested the husband this week. The woman was sent to her father’s home after treatment.

Speaking about the incident, Khoshboo Maidanwal, head of the provincial women’s affairs department said:

Her husband hit her and chopped off her nose with a sharp kitchen knife. She wanted a divorce because he abused her and beat her frequently.

She further discussed how the lockdown has led to an increase in domestic violence:

The lockdown due to the coronavirus has made the domestic situations even worse for women and one reason behind the increase could be that more women are reporting abuse.

Rights groups estimate that more than half Afghan women face domestic abuse at some point in their lives.

Intra-Afghan peace talks have yet to take place. Many women fear losing freedoms hard-earned since U.S.-backed Afghan forces overthrew the austere Islamist militants in 2001.

During their 1996-2001 rule, the Taliban banned women from education and work and only let them leave their homes in the company of a male relative.

Recovered coronavirus patients to avoid S.e.x for 30-days

People who have had coronavirus should avoid having s.e.x for 30 days after recovering, an expert has claimed according to a report by The Mirror.

Veerawat Manosutthi, a senior medical expert at the Thai Disease Control Department, has advised that patients who have overcome COVID-19 should avoid getting intimate for 30 days, and has even warned against kissing.

In his words:

Those who believe themselves to be free of the virus should use condoms when having s.e.x. Kissing should also be avoided as it is also known that it can spread through the mouth.

Manosutthi’s advice is based on a recent study, which found that some men have traces of the virus in their semen.

In the study, researchers from Shangqiu Municipal Hospital took semen samples from 38 male coronavirus patients in China’s Henan province.

The team analysed the samples on January 26 and again on February 16, and found that 16% of the men had traces of the virus in their semen.

In the study, published in JAMA, the researchers wrote:

The presence of viruses in semen may be more common than currently understood, and traditional nonsexually transmitted viruses should not be assumed to be totally absent in genital secretions.

Aside from semen, coronavirus can also be found in respiratory particles, which means kissing could also be off the cards.

Another doctor, Dr. Simran Deo, a UK-based doctor at Zava UK, also said:

Conditions like coronavirus are spread through water or mucus droplets from the nose and mouth containing the virus. So things, like kissing, shaking hands, sharing food, and drink with someone, put people at an increased risk of passing on the infection.

Rwanda′s genocide suspect arrested after 25 years

French police arrested one of the last key suspects sought over the Rwandan genocide on Saturday, prosecutors and police said.

Felicien Kabuga, once one of Rwanda’s richest men and accused of financing the genocide, was living under a false identity in the French capital’s suburbs, the public prosecutor’s office and the police said in a joint statement.

The operation, carried out at dawn, resulted in the arrest of a fugitive “who has been sought by the judicial authorities for 25 years”, the statement said.

Around 800,000 people — Tutsis but also moderate Hutus — were slaughtered over 100 days by ethnic Hutu extremists during the 1994 genocide.

The statement said Kabuga, aged 84, had been living in Asnieres-sur-Seine north of Paris and had been hiding with the complicity of his children.

Kabuga is accused of creating the notorious Interahamwe militia that carried out massacres in the 1994 genocide.

He also helped create the equally notorious Radio-Television Libre des Mille Collines that incited people to carry out murder in its broadcasts.

“Felicien Kabuga is known to have been the financier of the Rwandan genocide,” it said, adding that he had spent time in Germany, Belgium, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Switzerland.

A top UN prosecutor welcomed the arrest, saying it showed that suspects would be brought to justice for crimes in the 1994 genocide.

“The arrest of Felicien Kabuga today is a reminder that those responsible for genocide can be brought to account, even 26 years after their crimes,” said Serge Brammertz, chief prosecutor of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals in The Hague.

COVID-19: Four-month-old girl among new Kaduna cases – Govt

The Kaduna State Ministry of Health has said a four-month-old girl is among the 20 new coronavirus cases recorded in the state on Friday.

The State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Amina Mohammed-Baloni, in a statement on Saturday, also said 15 of the 20 new cases are family members.

She explained that the new COVID-19 patients are close contacts of previously confirmed cases, The Punch reports.

The statement said, “A four-month-old girl is regrettably one of the new patients, and investigations indicate that her father has travel history to Kano.

“The infant, who had been brought to the hospital for respiratory issues, was tested in accordance with the updated guidelines which advise that persons with such symptoms be tested. Her parents have also been tested and their results are being awaited.

“The 20 new cases are spread across seven local government areas. Chikun has seven (including five members of the same family), Giwa recorded four from the Shika community while three cases are in Kaduna North. Sabon-Gari and Kaduna South have two cases each, while Igabi and Zaria have one each. Six health workers are among the new cases, underlining the risks associated with containing and managing Covid-19.

“The latest cases show that Covid-19 has spread into nine LGAs: Chikun, Igabi, Giwa, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Makarfi, Sabon-Gari, Soba and Zaria. This widening spread of COVID-19 means that the risk of infection has increased for persons who do not stay at home or who fail to observe necessary precautions when they go out.”

The commissioner urged Kaduna residents to observe physical distancing and avoid large gatherings.

She added, “Parents are advised to shun non-essential travel or interactions to avoid taking the virus home and infecting their children and loved ones.

“They must also exercise personal responsibility regarding not allowing visitors into their homes. One of the COVID-19 fatalities in the state got infected when he received visitors at home.”

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, no fewer than 134 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Kaduna.

Female Journalist Who Just Gave Birth Suspended In Imo For Requesting Her 3 Months Salary

The Imo State Government has queried a senior editor with the Imo Broadcasting Corporation, Mrs Ottih Vivian, for complaining of non-payment of her salaries and that of her colleagues.

Ottih, a lawyer, had on May 4 in a Facebook post pleaded publicly to the state government to pay her colleagues and herself their over three months salaries.



"Nwamkpa Modestus (Uzodinma's SSA) my dearest brother, from the blood and water we share as brother and sister, and as colleague in the journalism profession, you are the closest officer of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Imo State, Chief Hope Uzodinma (Onwa Oyoko) to me.

“Please my brother, help me inform our humble and performing governor that the entire staff of the only electronic media establishment owned by the state Imo Broadcasting Corporation, the famous Orient FM and Television have not received salaries for the month of February, March and April.

"It could be that His Excellency is not aware of this ugly situation. My brother and colleague, the worst of the whole scenario is that, I your sister, who just put to bed barely three weeks now, is languishing in hunger, lack among others.

"During the COVID-19 lockdown era, IBC staff were never found wanting on their duty post doing what they know how best to do on empty stomach and starvation.

"From my omugwo domain, I learnt that many have fallen sick without any kobo to seek medical services. The situation is as bad as that. Let me stop here so far as we wait for a fast positive response and reaction from His Excellency.”

But in a letter dated May 8 and signed by one Osuchukwu S.O for the Acting Director-General of IBC, the government said Ottih’s action was ridiculous with the sole aim of sabotaging the government.

The letter reads, “I am directed to issue a query to you for granting a press conference without approval from the government (being a public servant) where you informed the world that government was unable to pay your salaries.

“I am also directed to let you know that this attitude caused serious embarrassment to the Imo State Government, thereby ridiculing the government in the eyes of the public with the sole aim of sabotaging the government.

“Therefore, based on the above, I am directed to ask you to explain within 24 hours on receipt of this letter why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for ridiculing and sabotaging the government.”

A letter of suspension was later sent to her, suspending her indefinitely.

Kobe Bryant chopper crash pilot had no drugs in system – Autopsy

The pilot of the helicopter that crashed while carrying Kobe Bryant and his daughter to a basketball tournament in California did not have alcohol or drugs in his system, according to the autopsy report released on Friday.

Ara Zobayan, 50, was taking the Bryants and six others to a youth tournament when the chopper slammed into the mountains west of Los Angeles, killing all nine on board instantly.

“Toxicological testing did not detect the presence of alcohol or drugs of abuse,” the Los Angeles County coroner’s report said.

The clinical report described the carnage at the January 26 crash scene and said that all the victims died of blunt force trauma. The manner of death for each was listed as accidental.

The investigation showed the helicopter was traveling at 296 kilometers per hour (184 mph) when it crashed into the hillside after running into heavy fog and cloud cover. Police said the helicopter plunged several hundred feet before impact.

The report said the 41-year-old Bryant had injuries to nearly his entire body. “These injuries are rapidly if not instantly fatal,” a medical examiner wrote of Bryant.

His 13-year-old daughter Gianna also died in the crash.

Bryant did not have any drugs in his system except Ritalin — a drug typically used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity and narcolepsy.

Also dying in the crash were two youth basketball teammates of Gianna Bryant: 14-year-old Alyssa Altobelli and 13-year-old Payton Chester.

Others who perished were Altobelli’s parents John and Keri, Chester’s mother Sarah and basketball coach Christina Mauser.

Vanessa Bryant, the basketball star’s widow, previously filed a wrongful death lawsuit against helicopter operator Island Express.

Bryant won five NBA championships for the Los Angeles Lakers during 20 NBA seasons. He was the NBA’s most valuable player in 2007-08, a 15-time all-NBA selection, and an 18-time all-star.

He was twice named MVP of the NBA finals and was the all-star game MVP four times.

Stop Revealing Drugs That Cured You - FG Warns Coronavirus Survivors

The federal government has pleaded with COVID-19 survivors to stop giving details of the drugs used for their treatment to discourage self-medication.

The Chairman, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mr. Boss Mustapha, made the plea at a press briefing in Abuja, following recent video testimonies of some high profile survivors, talking about the drugs administered on them at the treatment centres.



Mustapha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, expressed concern that some of the testimonies disclosing the prescription for treatment of the virus could encourage patients to indulge in self-medication instead of seeking help from health authorities.

He urged all Nigerians that have symptoms of COVID-19 to test for the virus and if positive, go into the isolation centres for care by experts.

“The PTF congratulates and appreciates the testimonies of Nigerians who have recovered from COVID-19, which has given us more insights and further strengthens the need to adhere strictly to guidelines issued. However, an emerging issue from all these testimonies is the issue of prescription for treatments. We should always remember that the symptoms of COVID-19 mimic some illnesses we already know but treating the symptoms is not the same as treating the virus. For this reason, we strongly discourage self-medication,” Mustapha said.
