Buhari orders onslaught on bandits, kidnappers in Katsina

President Muhammadu Buhari has given the armed forces an order to rout every trace of banditry and kidnapping from his home state of Katsina.

The President gave the order on Sunday during an audience he granted the Chief of General Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, at the State House in Abuja.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, showed that a special operation had already begun in response to the presidential order.

According to him, “President Muhammadu Buhari has authorised the commencement of a major military operation to sweep bandits and kidnappers out of Katsina State.

“A major proactive operation by Special Forces, which details are being kept secret, is now in progress to replace the reactive strikes against insurgent camps.

“To give a full effect to the exercise, a planning team is already in the state selecting targets and making preparations for the execution of the ‘unprecedented’ operation.

“The Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, who has been measured in issuing official statements on the oncoming exercise, briefed the President on the plan he intends to launch shortly.

“President Buhari, who expressed sadness over the recent attacks in the state, extended his condolences to the families of those killed and prayed for the recovery of the injured”, the statement said.

8 injured in clash over imam’s position in Kogi

Eight people were injured in a clash between members of two Islamic sects over Imamate – Imam of Okene Central Mosque position – in Kogi State.

Locals told Daily Trust on Sunday that the clash which occurred on Friday was a spill over of the lingering crises between Tijaniyya and Sunni sects over who become the chief imam following the demise of the former imam, Musa Galadima who died in 2019.

It was learnt that the clash occurred few minutes to the commencement of the juma’at sermon when Ustaz Bello Hussaini, a sunni referred to Sheik Salihu Abere, who has been superintending over the mosque as the acting chief imam.

The statement was said to have infuriated a member of Tijaniyya group who demanded for an apology from the sunni member for being rude to the chief imam.

The development was said to have resulted in a free-for-all fight with many faithfuls scampering for safety.

A civil servant, Abdulsalam Mohammed Bashir who spoke to journalists on the matter, described it as an unfortunate and sad development.

“I was there when the chief imam entered the mosque to preside over the juma’at prayers.

“To the surprise of many people in the mosque , Bello Hussaini stopped his pre-hutuba sermon and announced that the acting imam is around instead of referring to him as the chief imam. This was the cause of the mayhem that lasted for more than an hour before the intervention of the police,” he explained.

However, the sunni member who was at the center of the altercation, Ustaz Bello Hussaini said he did no wrong by referring to Sheikh Salihu Abere as the acting imam since the substantive imam has not yet emerged.

According to him, following the death of the late chief imam, Sheik Salihu Abere who was the deputy was directed by Governor Yahaya Bello to step in on acting capacity.

“Momoh Jimoh challenged me for referring to Salihu Abere as acting chief imam and altercation and crisis followed. Four of our members were seriously injured while their shops was vandalised,” he said.

He said he referred to Abere as acting chief imam because, since he was directed to takeover on acting capacity, there has not been a pronouncement making him the substantive chief imam.

Meanwhile, governor Bello has summoned the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland , the five Ohis in the district and eminent personalities from the zone to Lokoja with a view to finding a lasting solution to the crisis.

LASG gives conditions to reopen churches, mosques, others

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said government officials will be visiting churches, mosques, companies to evaluate their preparedness to fully reopen.

According to him, social distancing and hygiene will be prerequisites to reopening religious places of worship in the state.

Sanwo-Olu stated these at a briefing on Sunday after the State Security Council meeting at the Lagos House, Marina.

He noted that with the size of the state’s economy and numbers of businesses operating in its domain, the government could not afford to keep people and businesses on lockdown permanently.

The governor said in the coming days, officials from the Lagos State Safety Commission and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency would be assessing the readiness of the players in identified sectors for supervised operations.

He said, “We are at a level where we are reviewing the other arms of the economy. In the coming days, we will be starting what we call Register-to-Open, which means all players in the restaurant business, event centres, entertainment, malls and cinemas, will go through a form of re-registration and space management.

“There is a regulation that will be introduced to supervise this move. We will be coming to their facilities to assess their level of readiness for a future opening. I don’t know when that opening will happen in the weeks ahead, but we want these businesses to begin to tune themselves to the reality of COVID-19 with respect to how their work spaces need to look like.

“For us, it is not to say they should re-open fully tomorrow or any time; there has been a process guiding the re-opening.

“We will be mandating LASEPA and safety commission to begin the enumeration process and the agencies will be communicating with all relevant businesses and houses in the days ahead. I must, however, caution that this should not be misinterpreted as a licence for full opening; it is certainly not. The state’s economy is not ready for that now.”

Sanwo-Olu said the government agencies would also be visiting places of worship ahead of full reopening.

He stressed that social distancing and hygiene would be fully considered in determining whether mosques and churches could re-open.

“We are reviewing and considering how the phased unlocking will happen. If we see huge level of compliance, then it can happen in the next two to three weeks. If not, it could take a month or two months. It is until we are sure all these players are ready to conform to our guidelines,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu urged businesses, religious houses and residents to maintain the status quo, while the state worked out modalities for full re-opening.

He also disclosed that all the 10 members of staff of the Government House who tested positive for the coronavirus had fully recovered and returned to their beats.

“After servicing TCN for a period of about six years, please be informed that your political posting had lapsed by June 11, 2018 and you should have ceased from coming to work from June 12, 2018. Consequently, you are to stop coming to work with immediate effect.”

Nigerians in Thailand reject payment before evacuation order

Nigerians residing in Bangkok, Thailand appear set for a showdown with the Nigerian Ambassador to the country, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli and the Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama over the directive that stranded Nigerians in Bangkok anxious to return home should pay a sum of N297, 600 being cost for accommodation and feeding for their mandatory 14 days isolation in Nigeria.

The memo, “Need to pay for Quarantine, Isolation, accommodation centre or hotels before Departure and Arrival in Nigeria, ” dated May 14, 2020, addressed to prospective evacuees in Thailand was signed by Head of Chancery, Bangkok, Thailand Nicholas Uhomoibhi.

Speaking with Tribune Online on Friday at the Presidential Task Force on COVID–19 media briefing, Ambassador Onyeama justified the payment before evacuation order as he said the nation was financially handicapped.

But the Nigerians In Diaspora Organization, Thailand in a letter dated May 17,2020 and addressed to the Foreign Affairs Minister rejected the order.

President of the organisation, Dr. Lloyd C. Nwafor said the directive lacked human face.

He argued that some of the evacuees have lost their jobs and were living at Immigration Deportation Camp (IDC), where they survive on charity.

The Nigerians In Diaspora Organization Thailand declared that asking jobless families to raise money for their tickets and pay for accommodation and feeding at isolation centres back home was insensitive, uncaring and harsh.

They asked the Foreign Affairs Minister to review his stand.

Barack Obama blasts US Covid-19 response

Former US president Barack Obama on Saturday took aim at officials dealing with the coronavirus pandemic in a rare public rebuke of the current administration.

“More than anything, this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing,” the former Democratic president said in an address to college graduates.

He did not name his successor Donald Trump or specific U.S. officials in the address, which appeared to be pre-recorded.

“A lot them aren’t even pretending to be in charge,” Obama said during the speech, which capped a two-hour event for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) broadcast on social media.

In a second address to the high school Class of 2020, Obama told graduating students that the pandemic means they would have to grow up faster than some other generations, and urged them to “do what you think is right”.

“Doing what feels good, what’s convenient, what’s easy. That’s how little kids think.

“Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grown ups, including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still think that way, which is why things are so screwed up,” Obama added, in what appeared to be a dig at Trump and administration officials.

The White House’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has come under the spotlight amid sharp criticism by Democrats, who have bashed Trump’s fairly lax approach through February and lingering testing shortages.

Since leaving the White House in early 2017, Obama has largely refrained from criticising the Trump administration, following a convention among former U.S. presidents.

Men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, narrowly escaped death on Saturday night, when they were attacked by rampaging hoodlums while in the process of rescuing some victims of a road accident at Oke-Gbegun hill in Ikorodu area of Lagos.

The incident reportedly occurred during the period of COVID-19 curfew, following a mechanical failure of a -14 seater passenger commercial bus while in the process of navigating through the Oke-Gbegun hill.

However, he subsequently rammed into the commercial motorcyclist and as a result killed the rider in the process.

Director-General, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu who confirmed the incident, explained that “In the cause of performing its essential duties during the period of COVID-19 curfew, the activated men of the LASEMA Response Team meant to rescue were attacked by hoodlums Saturday night.

“The attack on the LASEMA Response Team and other First Responders by hoodlums at the Ikorodu incident site came on the heels of the death of a commercial motorcyclist, popularly called “Okada” rider, who died when he was crushed by a commercial vehicle at Oke-Gbegun, inward LASPOTECH in Ikorodu.

“The dead, and yet-to-be-identified commercial motorcyclist, was said to have been taken away by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, before the arrival of the LASEMA Response Team, while the ill-fated commercial bus was set on fire by angry hoodlums.

“LASEMA Response Team in preparation for evacuation of the said dead cyclist and on-spot medical attention for the injured had in turn, also activated the LASAMBUS, while SEHMU was called up to bag and retrieve the body, all of which was put on hold due to security challenges faced at the Ikorodu incident site.

FG Planning Isolated Lockdowns As COVID19 Cases Hit 5,621

SGF Boss Mustapha said contrary to insinuations doing the rounds about another lockdown, the federal government was only contemplating “isolated lockdowns” in troubled parts of the country.

Speaking on measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, Mustapha flatly dismissed the possibility of another nationwide lockdown. He said the idea was no longer expedient in view of some of the latest developments. But he said some cluster areas in certain parts of the country would be closely monitored for possible intervention as might be deemed necessary and advised by experts.

Further addressing the swirling speculations that another lockdown might be imminent given the general state of response to the pandemic, Mustapha said such a decision was not on the cards yet, especially given that enforcement had not been as impressive as envisaged in the overall plan against the spread of the virus.

He was, however, sure there might be isolated lockdowns in some parts of the country, which might not affect the entire states in question but the affected portions of the states for ease of administration, enforcement and monitoring. This, he said, would be worked out with the states in question with a view to ensuring that the rest of the country was not put at risk, citing the federal government’s intervention in Kano State as an example of how the isolated lockdown as well as the involvement of the federal government might look.

He noted that the federal government was closely monitoring the situation reports across the country to be able to ascertain when and where to come in, mentioning specifically the climbing numbers in Lagos, which he said was being religiously monitored.

VIDEO: Dubai evacuees protest in Lagos as three test positive for COVID-19

Three out of the 256 Nigerians evacuated from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, UAE, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Lagos.

The state Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, disclosed this on Sunday morning via his verified twitter handle @ProfAkinAbayomi

He said the positive evacuees have been moved to one of the isolation centres for further treatment.

However, Abayomi did not disclose which of the hotels the patients were discovered.

The evacuees have been observing the mandatory 14-day quarantine in Lagos since arrival into Nigeria.

Recall that the voluntary evacuees who were initially stranded in UAE since the introduction of COVID-19 lockdown by the country arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on May 6, about 07.40 p.m, via an Emirates Airline.

On arrival, they were promptly placed under a 14-day in line with the World Health Organisation and government’s COVID-19 protocol in undisclosed hotels in Ikeja and Lekki, respectively.

Earlier in the week, one of the evacuees reportedly died of COVID-19 complications but was later dismissed by Abayomi who said the actual cause of death was still being investigated.

The commissioner, therefore, urged residents to “remain committed to rules guiding COVID19 infection prevention regardless of relaxation of lockdown”.

Meanwhile, the other evacuees had berated Nigeria Centre for Disease, NCDC, and the state government for neglecting them in the hotels without adequate attention.

Controversy, however, set in after the death of a 32-year-old man, one of the evacuees over the cause of death.

Abayomi, initially via his official Twitter handle on Tuesday, announced that the evacuee died of COVID-19 complications.

Lessons To Learn From Mike Bamiloye, As His Biomovie 'The Train' Trends Online

Mike Bamiloye's biographical movie titled; THE TRAIN is making waves and impressing viewers worldwide as it hit the internet on May the 3rd; earning a comfortable number 1 spot on the Nigerian YouTube cyberspace. It has raked in almost a million views so far.

The movie which details the true life story of popular Gospel Drama Evangelist Mike Bamiloye reveals the passion the younger Mike had for God hence taking a step of faith that changed his life forever.

Mike Bamiloye whose other name was revealed in the movie as "Abayomi", started his life just like any other person would in Nigeria in the 1960s. The movie began on a rather solemn note showing how his mother passed away and the amount of pressure and grief it brought on the young "Abayomi" (Mike Bamiloye)

His childhood lifestyle portrayed in the movie, showed him gathering young children of his age, in a bid to make them act a short biblical movie "David and Goliath" He demonstrated his directing prowess by trying to direct the movie, but his effort failed miserably as no one wanted to act as Goliath! Lol.

The movie continued as it showed Mike Bamiloye transform from a troublesome child to a well reserved and respected "bro" who took God and the work of God seriously.

The movies' setting, casting and general character is highly impressive and generally good, too standard for a normal, everyday gospel movie. The movie started with a 1960s setting and environment which was hugely successful due to the blend of 1960s architecture, furniture arrangement, clothing and language.

Indeed, the movie is a classic for Christians who cherish Christian movies; even beyond the fact that the movie fared well, its godly essence and relevance will last for a long time in the Christian world which is in dire need of godliness and its propagation via movies.

The movie encourages total faith in God amidst the raging storms that might try to weaken or make one compromise.

Factboyz will be pointing out some lessons that can be learnt from this great Christian movie of a great Christian of our time. Relax as we lists out 10 lessons that can be learnt from the movie;

1. Always Believe in God:
Who doesn't even know this one? That's the first step for a successful roller-coaster ride in the Christian faith. Belief in God is beyond faith alone, it also involves taking a step of obedience and diligence in the study of the Bible.

2. Never Give Up On A Child Whose Future Doesn't Look Bright:
From the movie, the young Mike seemed to have no clear direction in life, with his future looking incredibly bleak, yet he overcame all and was a surprise miracle to those who once mocked him.

3. The Present Doesn't Determine The Future:
Your current situation now, doesn't determine your future, it is not a stamp to your destiny tomorrow. Who thought a small, village boy would end up becoming a world renowned evangelist? No one! His marriage to Gloria Bamiloye also had an ugly look then, but look at them now! This is a great lesson!

4. What Irritates You Could Be An Assignment:
"Abayomi' (Mike Bamiloye) was not happy with the apparent and obvious glorification of the devil via the television and it spurred him to action to cretae Christian content and movies that would rather glorify God. In his zeal for God, he set out on a journey of faith that God honored. His journey of faith is currently blessing thousands of people globally. As a Christian, there might be some evil, negative things that you may have noticed going on around you in your family, your place of work or even your church; it is time to speak up! That could be an opening door to your God-given ministry.

5. Your Marriage Partner Makes You or Mars You:
God helped Abayomi to pick someone who had the same passion with him; hence helping take him to greater heights. The lesson to be learnt here is enormous because when anyone chooses the wrong marriage partner, its resulting results becomes highly disastrous. However, the right spouse came because he trusted God and that spouse (Gloria) became a supportive pillar for his ministry.

6. Virtuous Women Still Exist:
Even amidst the chaos and confusion in that time, Abayomi was able to find a virtuous, godly lady to marry. Of course we cannot expect less because his trust was fully on God who he heavily relied on. It also teaches that it is worthy and honorable to wait on the lord in holiness and patience without being involved in immorality currently ravaging the lives of youths in our days.

The lessons are too numerous to mention but we have mentioned some which are worthy of note.

Factboyz rates this movie high and it is recommendable for Christians struggling to answer the call of God upon their lives.
