Some Rich Nigerians Dying Trying To Treat COVID19 In Their Homes

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire has said the Federal Government was disturbed that COVID-19 deaths came from many educated, well-to-do Nigerians who chose home-based care and were only rushed to hospitals after sudden complications.

The minister, who stated this during the daily briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, advised everyone who tested positive for COVID-19 to seek medical attention, and not use drugs without a doctor’s prescription.

Ehanire said five centres in the country were researching into possible COVID-19 drugs. He said chloroquine was one of such drugs.

The health minister said, “As we learn more about coronavirus every day, we must be ready to adjust our strategy, based on knowledge and evidence. As of Monday, we had sadly recorded 191 deaths in 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“Even though this figure seems low compared to other countries, a disturbing picture emerging from the statistics is that not only are most fatalities linked with pre-existing diseases, many are educated, well-to-do people, who chose home-based care, where they develop sudden complications and have to be rushed to hospital.

“Experience is showing that complications in COVID-19 patients can arise with little or no notice. This is an added reason why all persons should seek medical attention when they test positive.”

Wike's Government: 'Abuja People Want To Declare State Of Emergency In Rivers'

The Rivers State Government said it has uncovered plans by some citizens of the State who reside in Abuja to cause breakdown of law and order in a bid to declare State of Emergency in the state.

A statement signed by Paulinus Nsirim, Commissioner for Information and Communications alleged that the plot was by same persons whose attempts to declare State of Emergency in the State since 2015 have never succeeded because of God’s intervention.

The statement said the same persons did everything within their powers to ensure that the 2019 Governorship election results were not announced but also failed.

According the State government, “As the build up for the 2023 elections and jostle for Presidential and Vice-Presidential tickets is gathering momentum, they want to use COVID-19 to create a crisis as if the State is at war with the Federal Government.

“They have decided to create unnecessary tension as if indigenes of Ahoada, Eleme and Port Harcourt are fighting with Northerners not to carry out their legitimate businesses.

“People forget history quickly. Since 2015, there have been farmers/herdsmen clashes in Nasarrawa, Plateau, Taraba, Ebonyi, Cross River, Kaduna, Yobe and Bornu States.”

The Statement further cited the fact that throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, States like Enugu, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Edo and Kaduna States have been intercepting lorries carrying human beings instead of foodstuffs.

“This is the same thing that the Rivers State Government is doing to protect the State from COVID-19,” the statement said.

Nsirim said that bandits have been killing innocent people in Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara and Kaduna States and that indigenes of these States, no matter their political differences were working together to protect their States.

For not getting to their homes and destinations before 8pm last night, many Nigerians in Lagos were forced to spend the night on the road as policemen blocked the road in a part of Ikoyi, linking the third mainland bridge, as a way of enforcing the Curfew.

Prepare For The Worst On Coronavirus - Minister of Health tells Nigerians

The Federal Government has told Nigerians to prepare for the worst in the COVID-19 battle.

It however said it was doing everything within its powers to curtail spread of the virus.

Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, stated this on Tuesday during the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

He urged health workers and Nigerians to do their best to learn more about pandemic.

Enihare said: “It is of great importance that we – members of the health sector and citizens, endeavour to use this period to dedicate efforts to strive for the best, but also prepare for the worst.

“As we learn more about coronavirus every day, we must be ready to adjust our strategy, based on knowledge and evidence.

“To continue strengthening response in States, the Federal Ministry of Health and Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) are assessing isolation centers all over the country, recently in Yenagoa and Oshogbo.

“We also continue providing diagnostic commodities and facilities in collaboration with partners.

Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, said: “We are not doing community testing everywhere. In certain states like Lagos, Kano, and even in the FCT, we are taking the test a lot closer to the community because of the intensity of transmission in those states.

“In those states, the states are identifying hotspot areas and based on these identifications, intensifying testing in those communities.

“We haven’t gotten to the stage of drawing community testing across the country. We are doing targeted hotspot areas identified by states.”

Young Lady 'Who Died & Was Buried' Resurfaces (Photo)

Twenty-year-old Margaret Ikumu, has come out of hiding after her family petitioned the Lagos State Police Command over her alleged death.

The family had on May 15, 2020, petitioned the police after the news of her death was announced on Facebook by her friends, Marvellous Mary and Nneka Buddy, whom Margaret allegedly connived with over her disappearance.

The family, who urged the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged death of Margaret, stated that she ‘died’ under controversial circumstances and accused her friends of burying her without their consent.

According to one Tony Iji, who signed the petition on behalf of the family, Marvellous and Nneka were contacted by the family through Facebook and they told them that Margaret had instructed them not to allow members of her family to know anything about her death; hence she was buried without the family’s consent.

The petition read in part, “Since then, all efforts by our family and our community here in Lagos to know the cause and circumstances surrounding Margaret’s death have been rebuffed by Marvellous and Nneka, who are the only persons with information about her death. They later sent a chat message on WhatsApp to a member of our family with a picture of a casket showing that Margaret had been buried.

“All efforts by members of the family to get more details about the death and eventual burial of Margaret from Marvellous and Nneka Buddy have proved abortive due to their refusal to co-operate with us. Miss Marvellous Mary has threatened to discard her phone number 07040869026 after the burial as a way of blocking us from further reaching her and all efforts to call Margaret’s phone number, 0811377322, have not yielded any result as the phone is permanently switched off.

“We, therefore, appeal to the police authority under your leadership to intervene by investigating the incident with a view to establishing the facts and circumstances surrounding her death and eventual burial without the knowledge and consent of her family.”

However, in a twist, Margaret was said to have come out of hiding after the petition to the police went viral on the social media.

According to the family, although the whereabouts of Margaret are still unknown, she has communicated with her mother to tell her that she is alive.

In another statement by Iji, Margaret claimed that she was not aware of her obituary announcement on her Facebook wall.

The statement read in part, “To our surprise, in the evening of May 16, the unexpected result from the massive media publicity happened; Margaret, who was purportedly deceased, was forced out of hiding when she was noticed online through her Facebook page, which was offline throughout the period.

“When contacts were made with her on Facebook, she responded and later received phone calls from her mother and few of her uncles, and she told them that she did not know the reason for the obituary announcement on her Facebook wall.

“Our findings showed that the whole thing was a deliberate conspiracy by Margaret in connivance with her friends to stage-manage a fake story about her death to confuse her immediate family and the larger society for whatever reason that is best known to them.

“Till now, we have not been able to extract from her the reasons for her action, because she is still largely incommunicado even though she has affirmed that she is alive.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the receipt of the petition, said the police had been able to locate Margaret’s whereabouts.

“I am aware of the petition. We have been able to identify the location of the girl; she’s alive. We will investigate the report of her being dead and the reason behind it,” he stated.

Lightning strike sparks huge fire at Texas apartment complex causing $7million worth of damage [photos]

A massive fire completely burnt down part of a Texas condominium complex to the ground over the weekend, following a suspected lightning strike.

Around 7:30am, fire alarms went off at Gulf Point Condominiums as Building 'B' quickly became engulfed in a horrific fire on South Padre Island.

The fire began on the east side of the building before spreading towards the center, NBC News reports.

Firefighters from South Padre Island and three nearby cities rushed to the scene, but substantial damage had already been caused.

Photos from the scene show firefighters attempting to quell the flames with hoses from the parking lot, but building B was essentially leveled.

Several witnesses captured the inferno on camera and shared the tragic footage on Facebook Live.

Massive flames can be seen ravaging the building as dark smoke billows into the air.

'Its a terrible morning on South Padre Island, Texas,' said Ben Hill, who recorded the blazes.

'A piece of is island history is lost,' Mayor Patrick McNulty said during a new conference.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, but the National Weather Service suggested it was caused by a lightning strike. Storms were in the area around that time.

Officials said residents were evacuated from the complex and no one was injured.

Carlos Chacón, the property manager at Gulf Point Condominiums, told KRGV that the complex was built in 1977.

He estimates that damage will cost $7million.

Heartbroken woman sends her ex a tonne of onions to make him cry as much as she did, when he never cried over their breakup [photos]

A heartbroken woman has punished her ex-boyfriend who cheated on her by sending him a tonne of onions to 'make him cry as much as I did'.

The ex-girlfriend, known by her surname Zhao, was left devastated after being dumped by her partner of over a year, according to the local press.

A picture released by Chinese media shows the alleged cheating boyfriend looking at the pile of vegetables after they were delivered to his door.

Ms Zhao was furious when she discovered that her former lover did not shed any tears after the splitting while she spent three days crying.

She ordered a tonne of red onions to be delivered to her ex-boyfriend's front door with a note that read: 'I've cried for three days, now it's your turn.'

Social media footage showed a delivery driver with a truck loaded with the root vegetables at a residential compound in Zibo, Shandong of eastern China as he tried to get in touch with Ms Zhao's boyfriend on Saturday.

An order label can be seen in the clip with an instruction asking the courier to not contact the receiver and 'just dump the onions at the front door'.

After failing to contact the ex-boyfriend, the delivery guy reportedly spent over four hours to move all the onions from the truck to the man's front door.

The anguished woman told the local press that she purchased the onions in the hope to make her ex-boyfriend, who remains unidentified, to 'cry as much as I did'.

'I heard from my friends that he was not upset at all after breaking up [with me],' Ms Zhao told reporters. 'I spent three days at home crying. I was so heart-broken.'

'So, I ordered a tonne of onions to his home. I've got money,' said the ex-girlfriend. 'I wanted him to know the taste of tears.'

Ms Zhao's ex-boyfriend later told Shandong Net that he broke up with the Chinese woman due to her 'over-the-top behaviours'.

'My ex-girlfriend was very dramatic. She is telling everyone that I haven't shed one tear since our break-up,' he added. 'Am I a bad person for simply not crying?'

A neighbour who lives in the same complex as Ms Zhao's boyfriend complained to the reporters: 'I don't know if her boyfriend cried, but I have definitely cried! This whole compound stinks of onions.'

Horror! 17-year old girl beheaded by boyfriend in Sweden after breaking up with him

A 17-year-old girl was beheaded by her ex-boyfriend after breaking up with him in Sweden, it is alleged.

Wilma Andersson vanished on November 14 last year and police found a 'body part' two weeks later - which was later revealed to be her head.

Her ex-boyfriend Tishko Ahmed Shabaz was arrested at the time and has now been charged with her murder, which he denies.

Shabaz is accused of decapitating Wilma when she went to collect her belongings before wrapping her head in foil and hiding it at his home.

Charges against the 23-year-old suspect were announced last week in a case that has shocked Sweden, which has long held a reputation as one of the world's safest countries.

According to human rights monitor HRS, the suspect was born in Iraq and took up Swedish citizenship in 2014.

Hundreds of volunteers had joined the search for Wilma after she was reported missing in Uddevalla on November 17, three days after she was last seen.

The 'body part' was found on November 28 in a grim discovery which was announced the following day, bringing the search to an end.

Wilma's boyfriend had already been arrested by then, and has been in custody ever since.

The indictment claims that Wilma was killed on November 14, the day she went missing, and alleges that her ex-boyfriend cut up her body.

Police also found blood on the floor of his apartment and 'traces of Wilma' on a large kitchen knife, it is alleged.

'The suspect has retained a body part for an unknown reason and got rid of the rest of the body,' the police chief said.

Prosecutors claim that he murdered Wilma by subjecting her to 'repeated violence'.

The rest of Wilma's body has never been found, and relatives have urged people to continue their search.

'We want to find our daughter and sister. It is completely inhumane that we go through so please do not stop looking for Wilma,' her mother Linda told Swedish media.

Shabaz denies all the allegations, telling investigators: 'You forget that this is a girl that I have loved and that I have lived my life perfectly.'

The trial is due to begin on May 26.

China tests drug that aims to stop coronavirus

A Chinese laboratory has been developing a drug it believes has the power to bring the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to a halt.

The outbreak first emerged in China late last year before spreading across the world, prompting an international race to find treatments and vaccines.

A drug being tested by scientists at China’s prestigious Peking University could not only shorten the recovery time for those infected, but even offer short-term immunity from the virus, researchers said.

Sunney Xie, director of the university’s Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics, told AFP that the drug has been successful at the animal testing stage.

“When we injected neutralising antibodies into infected mice, after five days the viral load was reduced by a factor of 2,500,” said Mr. Xie. “That means this potential drug has (a) therapeutic effect.”

The drug uses neutralising antibodies — produced by the human immune system to prevent the virus infecting cells — which Mr. Xie’s team isolated from the blood of 60 recovered patients.

A study on their research, published in the journal Cell, suggests that using the antibodies provides a potential “cure” for the disease and shortens recovery time.

“Our expertise is single-cell genomics rather than immunology or virology. When we realised that the single-cell genomic approach can effectively find the neutralising antibody we were thrilled.”

Muslims urged to look for the new moon as Ramadan ends

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has urged Muslim faithful in the country to look out for the new Islamic moon of Shawwal from Friday May 22.

NSCIA said this in a statement by its Deputy Secretary General, Prof. Salisu Shehu, on Monday in Abuja.

Shehu also felicitated with Nigerian Muslims for observing the Ramadan of 1441 AH and prayed to almighty Allah to avail all Muslims the opportunity to witness another Ramadan in good health.

”Following the advice by the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC) that Friday May 22, 2020 which is equivalent to 29th Ramadan, 1441 AH is the first day to look for the Crescent of Shawwal, 1441 AH.

” However, on that day, the moon will set few minutes before the sun, which makes the sighting of the crescent practically impossible.

” Nonetheless, the president-general of NSCIA in compliance with the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) enjoins the Nigerian Muslims to search for the crescent of Shawwal 1441 AH, immediately after sunset on Friday May 22, which is equivalent to 29th Ramadan, 1441 AH,” he said.

He enjoined Muslim faithful across the country to be on the lookout for possible announcement by NSCIA President General on the termination of the 2020 Ramadan fast.

Lockdowns, curfew not in our best interest, putting God first has worked for us - Tanzania President

Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli has downplayed US fears that Dar es Salaam hospitals are overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.

Earlier this week, the US Embassy in Tanzania issued an alert warning that there is an “extremely high risk” of contracting coronavirus in Dar es Salaam.

But on Sunday, May 17, President Magufuli said that many of the Covid-19 patients in Tanzania have recovered, giving a blow-by-blow account of the few patients in each of the country’s main hospitals.

“I urge you to continue taking caution and praying. If the trend continues this way, I’ll open up universities for students to resume their studies. I will also consider resuming sporting activities,” said a confident Magufuli.

Magufuli, exuding confidence, claimed that some planes are fully booked as tourists plan to visit the country in August.

The East African leader insisted that the country will continue putting its faith in God during the Covid-19 pandemic and adhering to the normal control measures.

Magufuli has been facing criticism for the manner in which he has been handling the virus pandemic, especially bucking the global trend of effecting lockdowns.

The Tanzanian leader said that it is not in the best interest of the country to shut down its borders, effect lockdowns, and impose a curfew.
