Woman dies after birth of conjoined twins in Imo, husband abandons them

A taxi driver in Owerri, identified as Anayochukwu Njoku, from Umuakagu, Agbahara Nsu in Ehime Mbano council area took to his heels and abandoned his wife when he realised that she gave birth to conjoined twins.

Njoku’s wife, Chidinma, was said to have given birth to the conjoined twins on March 11, 2020, but their sight was not something that Njoku could behold.

Unfortunately, the conjoined twins, Goodluck and Rejoice Njoku were said to have lost their mother three hours after their delivery.

The plight of the infants was subsequently brought to the attention of Imo Foundation, the humanitarian organ of the Imo State government, where efforts are being intensified to separate them.

Director General of the Foundation, Mrs. Beulah Chukwuma, who spoke to newsmen while highlighting the plight of the children, said that after the burial of their late mother, the conjoined twins were brought to them.

Chukwuma said apart from the efforts made by the state government towards the survival of the twins, the foundation has made representations to various organisations to support their separation.

Chukwuma said, “Presently, we have a family with conjoined twins.

Their mother, Mrs. Chidinma Njoku died on 11th March, 2020 three hours after giving birth to them in a maternity in Umuokoto Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area.

“Their father, Mr. Anayochukwu Njoku, was helping his late wife in her tailoring shop to earn a living to support their poor family of six before the arrival of the conjoined twins, after he lost his job two years ago as a driver.

“By the special grace of God, as soon as the case got to the desk of Governor Hope Uzodimma, he gave an urgent directive for the twins to be brought to the Foundation for their adequate welfare and survival.

“So currently, we are reaching out to quickly get their surgery done so that they can begin to live a better life. Chukwuma said that in spite of the assistance from the state government, there was the need to go beyond government.

“We need to reach out to organisations, individuals that are public spirited to come to our aid in addition to what the government is doing for us.”

Chilling story of the evil care home worker who slit throats of 19 disabled patients

It was a short and familiar car ride for Satoshi Uematsu from his home to a care facility where he’d spent many hours as a caretaker for the disabled residents.

It was the early hours of July 26, 2016, and the roads would have been eerily quiet.

No one would have noticed Uematsu, then 26, leaving his home in Sagamihara, a small town near Tokyo in Japan. His parents had moved out a few months earlier.

Uematsu’s neighbours might have seen his trademark blond hair as he drove away and wondered where the friendly, polite young man was going.

They would have been surprised to hear he was going to the care home – after all, he didn’t work there any more.

The Tsukui Yamayuri En residential facility, or Tsukui Lily Garden, was located in almost eight acres of remote woodland and boasted a swimming pool, a gym and medical centre. It was home to around 150 patients aged 19 to 75. They had a variety of mental and physical disabilities, and some were bedridden.

Uematsu’s dad was a school art teacher and he’d tried to follow in his footsteps and had trained to be a teacher, too. But he had ended up working at the care facility where he’d stayed for more than three years until leaving in February 2016.

In Japanese culture, there is still often stigma around having a disabled family member and so they are sent to live in welfare facilities to be cared for by staff. It continues to be a hot debate in the very private country, where disabled people aren’t commonly visible – and campaigners continue to seek change.

Uematsu wanted to do something about the position of disabled people in society and as he parked at his former workplace, and carried a bag towards the building, he put his shocking plan into action. Using a hammer, he broke a window and entered the facility.

When Uematsu came across a staff member, he tied them up and stole their keys. He continued to restrain any staff he encountered – once they saw a knife in his hand, they knew they couldn’t fight back. It was the middle of the night and only nine staff were on duty.

Uematsu then headed towards the rooms where the patients were sleeping. Using one of the knives he’d taken with him, he started to slash the throats of his disabled victims – one after the other.

He continued to other floors, leaving the dead in his wake. Stabbing at their necks, it was methodical, relentless and brutal. Uematsu had strong feelings about the disabled – he believed they had no place in the world and should ‘disappear’.

When other staff members realised what was happening, they called police at around 2.30am. By the time they arrived, Uematsu had gone. Security cameras caught him leaving the premises at 2.50am.
It was a bloodbath and 29 ambulances rushed to the scene. There were 19 dead, aged between 19 and 70. Ten women and nine men. There were 26 more seriously injured.

Uematsu had slipped the net and a very dangerous man was on the loose, but he soon handed himself into a local police station with a bag full of bloodstained knives and tools.

‘I did it,’ he was quoted as telling police officers at around 3am. ‘It is better that disabled people disappear,’ he added.
The mass murder prompted many questions about how disabled people are viewed and treated in Japan.

After being assessed, Uematsu was deemed mentally fit to stand trial and in February 2019, he was charged with 19 counts of murder, 24 counts of attempted murder, several counts of illegal confinement, unlawful entry and weapon charges.

In January this year, Uematsu, now 30, pleaded not guilty on the grounds of diminished capacity. The trial was conducted in front of a jury, which is rare unless the crimes are considered severe, including those eligible for the death penalty.

Over 2,000 people lined up to try to get one of the 26 viewing seats in the public gallery, while the media broadcasted from outside.

Uematsu’s lawyers said that his mental state at the time of the murders meant he didn’t understand what he was doing. They also blamed his judgement on his marijuana use.

‘He was in a condition in which either he had no capacity to take responsibility or such a capacity was significantly weakened,’ his lawyer said.

But the prosecution argued that he was fully responsible and the attack was premeditated so they would be seeking the death penalty. They said what he’d done was ‘inhumane’ and it left ‘no room for leniency’.

Uematsu was found guilty and the judge agreed with the jury’s decision. ‘The crime, which took the lives of 19 people, was extremely heinous and caused damage that is incomparable to any other case,’ he said.

At the sentencing, the mother of one of the victims changed her mind about concealing the name of her daughter, who was 19 and autistic. The teenager had been at the care home just months and her mum shared photos in court.

‘She loved music, she lived as energetically as she could,’ the woman’s statement read. Adding that she saw her daughter two days before her death.

‘Her name was Miho. I want that public as proof that she existed. I want people to know who she was.’ She added that even an extreme penalty would be too light for Uematsu. ‘I will never forgive you,’ she told him. ‘I hate you so much. I want to rip you apart.’

In March this year Uematsu was sentenced to death by hanging. The judge said his actions were ‘so grave it is impossible to compare them to previous cases’, adding that there was no other option than to enforce the death penalty. Uematsu confirmed he would not appeal the decision.

At no point did Uematsu show any remorse for his actions. He continued to insist that there was no point in disabled people living. The legacy of his horrific attack has been a more open discussion about the treatment of disabled people.

Uematsu claimed he’d committed the crime ‘for the sake of society’, but making sure he is never free again is without doubt the best thing for humanity.

Akin Alabi shades those forming 'book masters' on IG Live

During the total lockdown period, many people started IG live shows.

In some, serious matters where discussed, in others, it was entertainment. Many guests of the shows however made sure they were going live from their home libraries, reminding Nigerians the power of reading, lol and maybe just to have total concentration and no distraction from family members.

The shows are still on tho, and now Lawmaker, Akin Alabi is taking a jab at them, saying no one needs to show packs of books, but what matters most is what they are offering -- their content.

''You don’t have to sit near books when making a “serious” video or IG live. It’s your content that matters. Leave packaging'', he wrote.

Well one of his followers disagreed with him, saying in her opinion, a library is one of the most quiet place at home.

''In my opinion i think that is the most quiet place in the house. so most people fix their cameras there for online interviews these days just to avoid destractions. it may not be for show off'', Morenikeji said.

Nigeria Is Heading Towards Recession - Minister Of Finance

Nigeria's finance minister, Zainab Ahmed, says the coronavirus pandemic and falling oil prices are set to force the economy into negative growth.

Ms. Ahmed made the comments after the National Economic Summit meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

“On the economy, COVID-19 has resulted in the collapse in oil prices,” she said.

“This will impact negatively, and the impact has already started showing on the federation’s revenues and on the foreign exchange earnings.

“Net oil and gas revenue and influx to the federation account in the first quarter of 2020 amounted to N940.91billion. This represented a shortfall of N125. 52billion or 31% of the prorated amount that is supposed to have been realized by the end of that first quarter.”

She added that the economic contraction will multiply the misery of the poor.

“The crisis will only multiply this misery,” she said. “The economic growth in Nigeria, that is the GDP, could in the worst case scenario, contract by as much as –8.94% in 2020. But in the best case, which is the case we are working on, it could be a contraction of –4.4%, if there is no fiscal stimulus. But with the fiscal stimulus plan that we are working on, this contraction can be mitigated and we might end up with a negative –0.59%.”

Man who sealed wife’s private parts with superglue smoked out of hideout

A 30-year-old Tharaka Nithi man who assaulted his wife and sealed her genitalia, mouth and ears in a fit of jealousy has been arrested.

The man, identified as Kifo Muriuki was smoked from his hideout in Kaningo, Kitui County by a combined team from Directorate of Criminal Investigations Tseikuru, Special Crimes Unit and DCI Tharaka South.

Police have not yet revealed where they are holding the suspect, who had been on the run since Saturday, May 16, when he committed the heinous act.

According to the police report, Muriuki first lured his wife out of their Marimanti township home, fearing that he would be arrested after having travelled from Nairobi where there is a lockdown.

“They both went and on reaching River Kathita, he ordered her to remove all her clothes so that she may tell him all the men she had slept with while he was at Nairobi,” the woman told the police in her report.

At first, she said she declined the odd request but the man descended on her with blows while threatening to stab her with the knife he was holding.

After she complied, the man is said to have sprayed pepper and salt on her private parts and then applied superglue.

Worse still, the man then applied the same superglue on her ears and mouth.

Schools will reopen soon but no date ― Federal government

The Federal Government has disclosed that there are plans to soon reopen schools nationwide, saying, however, that this will not be done in two weeks as being speculated in some quarters.

Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, made the clarification on Thursday during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 news conference in Abuja following rumours making the round the Federal Government would reopen schools in the next two weeks.

The Federal Government had ordered the indefinite closure of educational institutions nationwide as part of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

But Nwajiuba while responding to questions from the media on when the government’s plans to reopen to the schools following the easing of the lockdown, said the schools would be reopened when the safety of the school children could be guaranteed.

He said the government was wary not to endanger the lives of the school children and further spread of the coronavirus in the society.

He added that his ministry is working with other relevant stakeholders and agencies of government to put necessary measure in place that would guarantee the safety of children before the schools are reopened.

He said: “We all are seriously interested in reopening and I believe we will reopen soon. But I can’t confirm what your children said that we will reopen in two weeks.
“The issue around reopening has nothing to do with the availability of the schools or not. It has to do with national governance. The idea of shutting down the schools has nothing to do with the schools per se.

“You heard the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the SGF, keep saying it is a national response. It is a single national response and everything we do flows from that.

“When they determine, I’m sure you have seen all the experts here, that there is the measure of safety to which we can expose our children, we will gladly do that. We are watching and we are working with all bodies within and outside the country.

“The five countries of West African Examination Council (WAEC) are meeting and I just came out of a meeting with African Union (AU) Ministers of Education, everybody is concerned as you are. We hope to reopen very soon.

Police officers who helped murder suspect escape from custody arraigned

Three police officers based at Kamukunji Police Station, Nairobi, were on Thursday arraigned for aiding the escape from custody a Ugandan suspect charged with kidnapping their colleague.

Corporal Vacity Kemeres, Stephen Ochieng, and Elias Mungaria were accused that on May 13, 2020, acting jointly with others not before court, that they aided the escape of Martin Wasike.

Wasike had been charged with kidnapping with intent to murder a police officer, whose whereabouts remain unknown and is largely feared dead.

The victim’s lawyer, Alfred Nyandieka, told the court to detain the suspects and deny them bail, arguing they can also disappear from custody.

But the suspects’ lawyer said the court should presume them innocent until proven guilty, stating there is no compelling evidence to deny them bail.

The police officers’ lawyer said that there is no connection between his clients and the person alleged to have been kidnapped.

“They have no contact with the alleged kidnapper who is at large. The application is lacking any foundation in law,” said the advocate in his request to have the police officers released on lenient terms.
