PDP lashes Isa Pantami, Abike Dabiri over face-off

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday took a swipe at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under President Muhammadu Buhari.

This followed the altercations between the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami and the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, over office accommodation.

The main opposition said the Executive Council had become cancerous, disorganised and chaotic.

The party said the current FEC is incapable of driving an organised, result-oriented system and as such should be disbanded.

In a statement in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said its position was predicated on the hostilities among officials of the Presidency, including presidential aides, ministers and heads of agencies.

These, the party noted, had further exposed what it called a breakdown of the administration’s central command system.

The PDP described the situation as a mark of “failure by the Buhari Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to provide organised leadership for our nation”.

It added: “The PDP said a situation where officials are constantly at daggers drawn against one another in unending clashes, backbiting, betrayals, leakage of sensitive documents and internal bickering over pecuniary and political interests, in manners not different from street skirmishes of common cult groups, is unacceptable to our nation.

“It is indeed shocking that the acrimony had sunk to a situation where the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, reportedly evicted the workers of NiDCOM from their allocated office, with guns, while Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa was on official assignment with the President.

“Currently, the newly appointed Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, are said to be at each other’s throat, with the SGF reportedly querying the decision of the President to sack the former Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Mr. Usman Mohammed. The situation had degenerated into serious confusion in the Federal Executive.

“Nigerians can recall the bitter wrangling, wherein the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj.-Gen Babagana Monguno (retd.), earlier this year, alerted that presidential responsibilities, including presiding over sensitive security matters, have been hijacked by late Chief of Staff, Mallam Abba Kyari, thereby frustrating the fight against insurgency and acts of violence ravaging our country.

“Furthermore, the Power sector is still under the stress of squabbling between the SGF and the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, with the SGF reinstating some officials who were sacked by the minister last December.

“The nation has also not forgotten the embarrassing public fight between the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and President Muhammadu Buhari’s cousins over rooms in the Presidential Villa, which further exposed the chaotic situation in the President Buhari-led administration.

“Before then, the First Lady had alerted the nation to a cabal that had hijacked the Federal Executive and taken over governance of our nation.

“It is sad that presidential hostilities have resulted in escalated cases of internal sabotage, including the leakage of sensitive documents, as exposed by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan and recently witnessed in the embarrassing leakage of President Buhari’s draft COVID-19 speech.

“Nigerians can now see how vulnerable our nation has become and why it is extremely difficult for our country to witness any progress under the Buhari Presidency, which has also ruined all the gains achieved under the PDP.

“Indeed, no nation can achieve meaningful development under a rancorous and shambolic Federal Executive Council, as currently constituted, with the height of irredeemable division among them.

“Such a situation never obtained under the watch of the PDP in the glorious years of our nation.

“Our party, therefore, counsels President Buhari to re-direct the course of our nation’s tides by disbanding his poorly assembled and dysfunctional FEC.

“He should foreclose the parochial posturing of his administration by engaging more competent hands to run the affairs of our nation.”

Police detained me for eight days because my husband criticised Lai Mohammed – Wife

In this interview with Eniola Akinkuotu, Mrs Dorcas Jolayemi, the wife of a journalist detained for criticising Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, recounts her eight-day ordeal in the custody of the Kwara State Police Command.

A human rights organisation claimed you spent eight days in police detention because of your husband’s poem, which was critical of the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed. Can you narrate the events that led to your arrest?

On April 29, 2020 policemen came to my house in Ilorin, Kwara State, but I was not at home. I had gone to visit my brother-in-law. I was told that when they realised I was not at home, they came to my brother-in-law’s house in a Hilux van. They were about four policemen altogether. They said they had come to arrest me and I stood up. They kept asking me where my phone was and I told them it was with my son.

They said I must follow them to their station with my phone. Eventually, I got the phone and we left. On getting to the State Criminal Investigation Department, they began to interrogate me. They asked why I obstructed the arrest of my husband. I asked them what they meant by that.

They asked me when last I spoke with my husband and I told them I spoke with him in the morning. They said they wanted to arrest my husband and he fled to Maro in Kwara State. They said I was the one who advised him to run away and switch off his phone. They played a recording of my phone conversation with my husband.

Apparently, they had bugged my phone and that of my husband. I admitted that, indeed, I told my husband to run away, but it wasn’t a crime because I didn’t harbour him. I only asked him not to come home, which is what a typical wife would do. I heard the police wanted to arrest him and I didn’t know the reason why they wanted to arrest him. I told him to run away because I wanted him to be safe. They said for that, I would pay for it. I was brought before their boss and the man insulted me, calling me a stupid woman. He said I shouldn’t have advised my husband to run away. The man said I would pay for it and they took my statement. I was there from April 29 to May 6.

What exactly was your husband accused of doing?

While I was in detention, they played a recording of the poem that was recited by my husband. They asked if I could confirm if the voice belonged to my husband and I said it was his voice. They said how could my husband be insulting Lai Mohammed, a minister. They said it was Lai Mohammed that ordered them to arrest him.

When you were in detention, were you tortured by the police?

My experience in police custody was horrible. It was my older sister that was bringing food to me. I wasn’t allowed to communicate with anybody. They didn’t let me speak with my son. I slept on the corridor of the toilet. The place was horrible. I couldn’t sleep most of the time because of mosquitoes. I would stay awake most nights to ward off the mosquitoes.

Did you have access to your lawyer during that period?

No. They didn’t even allow me to talk to anyone, not even to my lawyer.

Did the police also arrest other relatives of yours?

My husband’s younger brother, Mr Joseph Jolayemi, was arrested on April 28. He was arrested because of my husband. At the time of his arrest, he was accused of possessing a stolen cell phone. However, on getting to the SCID, he was interrogated. The police asked him questions about my husband. They subsequently played a phone conversation he had with my husband. It was obvious that his phone had also been bugged. My brother’s older brother, John Jolayemi, was also arrested.

Who took care of your children in your absence?

My brother-in-law’s wife was the one that took care of them.

Did you bribe the police before you were released?

When my husband finally presented himself a week later, we were released. He came with a lawyer. So we signed some documents. I can’t really say what happened afterwards. I don’t know if the police were given money or not. My brothers-in-law may know.

How has your health been since your release?

My two brothers-in-law and I were all hospitalised after we were released. We spent about a week in hospital. We had severe malaria. It was a traumatic experience.

Have you had contact with your husband since his arrest?

The last time I saw or spoke to my husband was on May 5, 2020, the day he turned himself in at the SCID. On Thursday, which was May 7, he was taken to Abuja and since then, he has remained there.

Do you know if he is alive and well?

Sincerely, I don’t even know if he is alive or not because I have no access to him. Even his brothers are getting information about him from third parties. I don’t know whether he is sick or well. I worry about him every day.

Have you made attempts to plead with Lai Mohammed to drop the case?

According to my brothers-in-law, they sent representatives to plead with Lai Mohammed to drop the case. They said the Oba of Ilala in Kwara State and some other traditional rulers had gone to the minister to plead with him, but he has refused to respond. Some even went to the minister’s hometown in Oro to plead with elders in his community, but there has been no positive response.

Who has been providing for your family since your husband’s arrest?

At present, we are staying with my brother-in-law. He is the one that is taking care of us.

Costa Rica legalises same-sex marriage

Costa Rica legalised same-sex marriage on Tuesday, becoming the first Central American country to do so and sparking an emotional response from rights campaigners as the first weddings were held overnight.

Celebrations were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, but a special program about LGBT rights was broadcast on public television and online after a court ruling came into force at midnight.

“This change will bring about a significant social and cultural transformation, allowing thousands of people to marry,” said President Carlos Alvarado in the program.

Costa Rica is the eighth country in the Americas to recognise same-sex marriage — a group that includes Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina, as well as Canada and the US.

Lagos Plans To Re-open Schools, Employ New Teachers

The Lagos State Government has made known its plan to employ 2,000 teachers in its public primary schools.

The state Commissioner for Education, Folashade Adefisayo disclosed the plans or the recruitment during an online show, Covinspiration show, moderated by a United Nations (UN) Youth Ambassador, Dayo Isreal, while giving scorecard of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration within the 360 days.

Adefisayo said the move to employ more teachers was aimed at the standard of public primary school education in the state.

She said that the pandemic has held the ministry of education back in the completion of its plans for the sector.

Adefisayo said, “The administration after assumption of office decided to address the challenges in education aggressively in 2020 but the pandemic which country’s index case happened in Lagos has halted various plans for education in the state.”

She said that administration went back to the drawing as soon as President Muhammadu Buhari lifted the lockdown earlier imposed on Lagos and other states so as to fast track completion of 2020 plans which includes recruitment of teachers.

Adefisayo said, "The most important aspect of learning is the quality of teachers and we did not have enough teachers to actualize the set plan for learning in our public schools."

“And one of the earliest things we requested for and was granted by the governor was the recruitment of teachers.

“We have concluded the recruitment of 1,000 secondary school teachers. And we are currently working on the recruitment of 2,000 teachers for public primary schools.

“And we are looking at employing teachers every quarter because the rate of retirement of teachers is very high in Lagos.

“The administration has granted the ministry permission to replace retired teachers.

“Aside from recruitment, we have sent a lot on the training of current teachers to improve their teaching skills in classrooms. And this COVID-19 period was the time when we were able to do a lot of things in the education sector of Lagos state,” she added.

Speaking on school reopening, Adefisayo explained that governor Sanwo-Olu does not have the authority to unilaterally give directive for the reopening of schools, saying, “Like other sectors already approved by the Federal Government to reopen, the state government is meeting with officials of the Federal Ministry of Education to design guidelines that must be adopted before the schools will be reopened.

“We are watching the behaviour of the pandemic to see what happens next and we are working with the Federal government on the reopening of the schools in the country as soon as possible.

“This is not a decision that any state can unilaterally take on its own. If we are certain that the children are safe, we will reopen the schools for learning to resume.

“We are already working with the Federal Ministry of Education and they are working with National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on the guidelines that could be adopted when the need arises for the schools to reopen.

“After the protocol is completed and health officials assured us that the coast is clear, we will give the schools some days to adjust their premises in accordance with the guidelines on commencement of academic activities”.

60,000 volunteers to work as social distancing monitors in Italy

Italy is planning to send out into the streets some 60,000 volunteers to tell people to keep respecting social distancing rules in the country’s post-lockdown phase.

The scheme, announced by Regional Affairs Minister Francesco Boccia, on Monday came amid mounting concern that people are mingling dangerously close to one another on beaches, in bars and on public squares.

“The volunteers will not be vigilantes, but spreaders of good behaviour,’’ Bari Mayor and head of the Italian Mayors’ Association (ANCI) Antonio Decaro told Monday’s La Repubblica newspaper.

According to Boccia, they will be called “civic assistants” and wear blue vests.

“They will be armed with the strength of persuasion, reason and their smiles,’’ he told La Stampa daily.

Boccia wrote on Facebook that a recruitment call, open to all citizens but with priority given to the unemployed and recipients of welfare aid, is to be published by the Civil Protection Agency this week.

Italy suffered a devastating outbreak of the coronavirus, however, the epidemic peaked in late March, and after weeks of falling infection numbers the country’s lockdown was de facto ended on May 18.

In his La Stampa interview, Boccia said the goverment used “a carrot-and-stick approach” which “has worked,” but warned that a further easing of restrictions could be delayed if people misbehaved.

Kobe Bryant's gold and diamond ring fetches $206K from collector in auction

A 14-karat gold and diamond ring Kobe Bryant bought for his mom, who later sold it, has fetched more than $206,000 from an unnamed collector in an auction.

The ring sold in a Goldin Auctions event for $206,080, following a 20-bid sale in which the minimum bid was set at $15,000.

The private collector obtained the ring in a six-item lot for $280,000 in 2013 from Bryant's parents Joe and Pamela Bryant in a sale that was preceded by some family drama, as Kobe, 41, was opposed to the sale.

In the wake of a dispute that saw the family head to court in the spring of 2013, Kobe eventually let his parents move six of the items, which they did.

Kobe had the rings specially made following his Lakers' championship victory over the Indiana Pacers led by Reggie Miller in June of 2000.

Following the series, in which Shaquille O'Neal was named Series MVP, Kobe shelled out for a pair of ornate rings for his parents, with each piece containing 40 diamonds.

A second ring that Kobe gifted his father Joe could go on sale soon, TMZ claims.

Ivanka Trump slammed in India for 'glorifying poverty' after she praised girl, 15, who cycled 750 miles home with her disabled father on her back

U.S. presidential adviser Ivanka Trump's praise of an Indian teenager's bicycle ride home hundreds of miles away is drawing criticism in India for being insensitive to the plight of impoverished migrant workers struggling in a lockdown.

Jyoti Kumari, 15, carried her father Mohan Paswan on the back of her bicycle for about a week for 750 miles (1,200 km), from Gurugram near New Delhi in the north of India to their home in the Darbhanga district, Bihar state, east India.

They pair are just some of the many out-of-work migrants leaving the big cities for their homes in other parts of India because the shutdown has sapped their savings.

Ivanka, daughter of U.S. President Donald Trump, tweeted on Friday night: '15 yr old Jyoti Kumari, carried her wounded father to their home village on the back of her bicycle covering +1,200 km over 7 days.

'This beautiful feat of endurance & love has captured the imagination of the Indian people and the cycling federation!'

India's cycling federation, impressed with her endurance, has invited her for trials and said it could groom her into a cyclist.

But opposition political figures, as well as some commentators, in the country of 1.3 billion said Miss Kumari's desperate journey home because of a crippling transport shutdown was hardly something to celebrate.

Omar Abdullah, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, tweeted on Saturday in response to Ivanka's message: 'Her poverty & desperation are being glorified as if Jyoti cycled 1,200km for the thrill of it. Government failed her, that's hardly something to trumpet as an achievement,'
Health experts say India's vast lockdown has helped limit the spread of COVID-19, but it has pushed millions who live on daily wages to the brink of poverty.

After weeks of mounting criticism and tales of hardship, the government is now running trains and buses to help the migrants get home.

Speaking of the teenager's hard journey home Kanti Chidambaram, an opposition member of parliament, said: 'This is not a feat of excellence. It's a feat fuelled by desperation caused due to the callous attitude of the government,'

Miss Kumari's father, a rickshaw driver in north India, said he could not cycle because of an accident he had suffered months ago, he was forced to return the auto-rickshaw to its owner. With food and cash running out, his daughter decided she would ride him to their village in the eastern state of Bihar.

Her father Mr Paswan said: 'Initially I had doubts because she is just 15, but I was wrong. She asked me to sit on the bicycle and not pay heed to what people would say.'

They survived on biscuits and food that people gave them during the stops in the blistering Indian summer. Miss Kumari said she was happy she had brought her father home safely.

She declined to be drawn into controversy about Ivanka's post, saying, 'I am very happy with the appreciation I am getting from all the corners.'

Naira Marley fixes online concert for Saturday May 30th

Mad o! Naira Marley has fixed an online concert for Saturday May 30th to entertain his fans.

He was prevented from making his debut at the popular music and culture festival, Gidi Fest in April, due to the coronavirus pandemic and now a free online concert for Marlian Day has been scheduled for Saturday, May 30.

According to a statement made available by the organisers, “Marlian Day celebrates our liberty and our resilience through the daily challenges we face in Nigeria and most recently during the Covid-19 crisis. Most especially the heroic front line workers making personal sacrifices daily on behalf of Nigeria and humanity.”

Since the coronavirus upended music tours and concerts, many musicians have turned to social media and online platforms to create experiences and connect with fans. Notable examples include Canadian rapper Tory Lanez’s Live social distancing tour earlier this month, and Andrea Bocelli’s Music for Hope: Live from the Duomo in Milan. In the same vein, Naira Marley will be bringing the live concert experience from an iconic monument in Lagos to his fans at home.

Elon Musk and Grimes forced to change baby's strange name to comply with California law

Grimes and her billionaire love Elon Musk have had to change their baby son's bizarre name after it was found to be in violation of California law.

Their newborn son was initially called X Æ A-12 (pronounced 'Ex Ash A Twelve') but California law prohibits Indo-Arabic numerals in names.

Now the 32-year-old singer revealed in her Instagram comments that the baby's name is now written X Æ A-Xii, substituting in the Roman numerals signifying '12.'

The reveal came after an Instagram commenter asked: 'Did you change the baby name because of Californian laws ? What is the baby's new name?'

Grimes replied: 'X Æ A-Xii,' prompting a different Instagram user to write: 'Nice! Just removed the numbers to confirm to California law.'

'Roman numerals. Looks better tbh,' wrote Grimes, to which the commentator who asked the initial questions wrote: 'you aren't allowed to have numbers in your name so she replaced the numbers with Roman numerals.'

Grimes, a Canadian singer whose Christian name is Claire Elise Boucher, wrote: 'one dash is allowed.'

4 die as Russian Military helicopter crashes Tuesday morning

A military helicopter crashed on Tuesday at an airport in Russia’s remote eastern Chukotka region, killing all four people on board.

The helicopter of the Russian defence ministry went down in the main airport in Chukotka near Anadyr, which has mixed military and civilian use.

“There were three crew members and one technician on board. All four died,” governor Roman Kopin wrote on his Instagram account.

Russian agencies reported that it was a Mi-8 helicopter which was doing a test flight after undergoing technical maintenance.

“The reason for the accident could be a technical fault with the helicopter,” TASS news agency quoted a defence ministry statement as saying.

Military investigators were dispatched to the crash site, it said.

Anger, chaos at Indian airports as country resumes domestic air travel

India resumed domestic flights on Monday, two months after a coronavirus lockdown was imposed, but confusion and chaos prevailed at major airports as large numbers of flights were cancelled.

Air services were suspended in late March when India went into lockdown to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, bringing the domestic aviation sector to the brink of collapse.

More than 80 flights to and from the capital New Delhi were cancelled on Monday, airport authorities said, with irate passengers complaining of not being informed until the last minute.

Similar scenes were taking place at airports in Mumbai and Chennai, with many passengers sitting outside after their flights were cancelled, domestic news channels showed.

The cancellations were a result of confusion as each state made its own set of rules on easing restrictions, including capping the number of flights to address concerns about infections being imported from other cities.

States also had different rules on the duration of quarantine for arriving passengers, in some places as long as 28 days.

“We travelled (all) night to catch a flight from the Delhi airport but we are now told our flight is cancelled. We got no notifications from our airlines,” a passenger at told a domestic news channel.

Passengers were also stranded at airports in southern cities of Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram after flights were cancelled.

Eastern India’s main airport in Kolkata was not yet operational. West Bengal, the state in which the city is located, was battered by Cyclone Amphan last week and repair works are underway.

India’s government last week announced the resumption of domestic flights in a “calibrated” way, with airline companies allowed to operate one-third of their scheduled flights.

Prominent Texas lawyer and his female colleague arrested after hiring an undercover cop to kill her ex-husband

A prominent Texas defense attorney and his female colleague have been arrested for hatching an elaborate plot to kill her ex-husband.

Attorneys Seth Andrew Sutton, 45, and Chelsea Tijerina, 33, were each charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder, a first-degree felony, on Friday in Waco.

Arrest affidavits claim that Sutton paid an undercover Waco police officer to buy a 'clean' gun to kill Tijerina's ex-husband, Marcus Beaudin, a fellow defense attorney who was accused of molesting a child earlier this year.

Sutton and Tijerina allegedly gave the officer detailed instructions on how to carry out the murder.

Police say Sutton first met with the undercover cop on May 14 and agreed to pay him $300 to purchase a gun.

Sutton allegedly told the officer that he would help him leave town after committing the murder.

After that first meeting, police brought in the Texas Rangers to help with the investigation.

Sutton and Tijerina met with the undercover officer again on May 21 to plan the hit, which would take place at Beaudin's home.

'Chelsea Tijerina (Beaudin) and Sutton provided a timeline for the murder as well as establishing alibis for Chelsea Tijerina (Beaudin) and Sutton,' the affidavit states.

'On May 22, Sutton met (with the undercover officer) an provided (the officer) with $300 to purchase a firearm to be used to murder Marcus Beaudin.'

Sutton and Tijerina were arrested the same day and are now being held on $1million bond each at the McLennan County Jail.

The motive for the murder has not been disclosed.

Tijerina and Beaudin got married in November 2016 and welcomed a daughter in 2018. It is unclear when they separated.

Sutton is also married, and his wife has not returned requests for comment on his arrest.

Beuadin, 37, had been arrested by police in neighboring Woodway back in February on a felony charge of indecency with a child.

He was accused of sexually touching a 10-year-old female family member in December but has not been formally indicted by a grand jury.

Beaudin's attorney, Josh Tetens, says his client denies the allegations.

Sutton is well known among legal circles in Waco.

In 2017 he launched a bid to unseat the incumbent McLennan County District Attorney but dropped out before the Democratic primary.
