3 Brothers Arrested After They Kidnapped & Killed A Mother Of 5 In Abuja

*Police exhume remains of the deceased for forensic examination
Police operatives attached to the Intelligence Response Unit of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested three (3) suspects namely; Johnson Emmanuel - 38yrs, Gideon Emmanuel - 31yrs and Success Emmanuel - 27yrs, for the kidnap and gruesome murder of one Mrs Janet Nnenna Ogbonnaya on 14th May, 2020.

The suspects, born by same parents, all male and native of Isiekenesi, Ideato LGA of Imo State were arrested by the Police in their home town where they had taken refuge after committing the crime in Abuja, in order to evade police arrest.

Investigations that led to the arrest of the suspects is sequel to complaints received from one Chinedu Ogbonnaya who alleged that his mother, Mrs Janet Nnenna Ogbonnaya, 55yrs, native of Ozuitem in Bende LGA of Abia State had been kidnapped and a 5-Million naira ransom demanded before she could be released. A comprehensive and painstaking investigation by the police operatives resulted in the arrest of the three (3) suspects, whom, in the course of interrogation, revealed that the victim had long been murdered and buried.

Further findings revealed that the victim, a widow, who had been a Facebook friend of the principal suspect – Johnson Emmanuel, was lured from her home in Gwagwalada to visit the suspect. The suspect thereafter took advantage of the visit, served her yoghurt laced with drugs and subsequently had her murdered. The suspect having killed the victim and buried her remains in a septic tank, went ahead to reach out to the family of the victim using her phone and demanded 5-Million naira ransom as pre-condition for her release.

Meanwhile, today 4th June, 2020, the suspects led a team of investigators alongside pathologists to a residence at Wumba District, Lokogoma, Abuja where the victim’s decomposing body was exhumed from a septic tank. The exhumed body has been taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja for forensic examination.

A Toyota Highlander Jeep belonging to the deceased has also been recovered by Police operatives at a mechanic workshop in Apo where it had been repainted into a different colour, vehicle documents fraudulently changed and ownership of the stolen vehicle criminally transferred to one of the masterminds of the crime – Johnson Emmanuel.

Investigations also revealed that the house where the deceased was killed and buried originally belonged to one of the suspects but was hurriedly sold-off to a third party apparently to obliterate evidence.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni, while commending the operatives for a job well done, reassures that perpetrators of any form of crimes in the country will not go undetected and unpunished. He however enjoins citizens to be more security conscious and report any suspicious activities within their neighbourhood to the nearest police station.

Buhari Nominates Okonjo-Iweala For World Trade Organization DG

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Nigeria's former coordinating minister for the economy, for the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

In a document seen by The Cable, Buhari withdrew the candidacy of Yonov Frederick Agah, Nigeria’s permanent representative to WTO, for the same position.

The election is scheduled to hold in Geneva, Switzerland in 2021 for a four-year term that would run from 2021 to 2025 after Roberto Azevedo, former director-general of the organisation stepped down a year to the end of his second term.

“The embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and permanent mission to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) presents compliments to all embassies and permanent missions in Addis Ababa and has the honour to inform that the Federal Government of Nigeria has withdrawn the candidacy of Ambassador Yonov Frederick Agah for election to the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO),” the letter seen by TheCable read.

“Nigeria is therefore pleased to request the support of esteemed AU member states as well as permanent missions and embassies in Addis Ababa in favour of the candidacy of Okonjo-Iweala.”

Agah is Nigeria’s permanent representative to the WTO and WTO’s deputy director-general.

Okonjo-Iweala currently chairs the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), a public-private global health partnership with the goal of increasing access to immunisation in poor countries.

She also sits on the board of Twitter and is a former managing director (operations) at the World Bank.

On March 7, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa appointed her a member of the country’s economic advisory council.

A month later on April 10, Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), named Okonjo-Iweala a member of the fund’s external advisory group.

Okonjo-Iweala is one of the four special envoys appointed by the African Union (AU) on April 12 to mobilise international support for its efforts toward addressing the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2012, she contested to become World Bank president becoming the first female and first black candidate.

She was listed among one of the top 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes four consecutive times from 2011 to 2014. She was also listed as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine in 2014.

Kanye West Sets Up College Fund for George Floyd's Daughter

Kanye West has been working behind the scenes to contribute to the Black Lives Matter movement.

While the outspoken rapper has not tweeted since early March, E! News confirms West donated $2 million in relation to the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor and has been donating to several black-owned businesses in his Chicago hometown.

West, a father of four, also set up a college savings fund to cover tuition for Floyd's 6-year-old daughter, Gianna. Floyd died on May 25 after police officer Derek Chauvin pinned Floyd to the ground using his knee on Floyd's neck during his arrest. Chauvin and three other officers involved in Floyd's arrest and resulting death have since been fired, arrested and charged in a criminal case.

Additionally, West is helping cover legal costs for the families of Arbery, who was fatally shot while on a jog in February, and Taylor, who was killed in her home by police in March.

Video: Trump builds fence around White House following protests

The People's House continued to be fortified from the public Thursday, as workers erected a perimeter of tall metal fencing around the White House complex.

After law enforcement forcefully dispersed peaceful protesters so President Donald Trump could participate in a photo opportunity with a Bible outside St. John's Episcopal Church, workers were seen constructing fencing around Lafayette Park and at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue beside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building late Monday evening.
And on Thursday, construction of additional fencing along the White House complex began before dawn -- perhaps a sign of security concerns ahead of expected continuing protests this weekend.

By Thursday afternoon, the fencing extended down 17th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Constitution Avenue.

Prince Charles reveals he feels lucky to have survived coronavirus

Prince Charles has revealed he feels 'ghastly' for those who couldn't be with their loved-ones as they died of coronavirus.

The Prince of Wales, 71, has opened up about his brush with COVID19 in a new interview with Sky News for their series After The Pandemic: Our New World, which will air tomorrow night.

Speaking from his Aberdeenshire home of Birkhall, he told royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills: 'I was lucky in my case and got away with it quite lightly. But I've had it, and I can so understand what other people have gone through.'

Prince Charles added: 'I feel particularly for those who have lost their loved ones and have been unable to be with them at the time. That to me is the most ghastly thing.'

'I know that so many people have had the agony of losing their loved ones and the bewilderment and anxiety that surrounds everything.

'It is the most awful aspect of a pandemic like this, and yet we've seen at the same time people being quite remarkable and wonderful people in the national health service and all the other key workers who kept everything going.'

Prince Charles went on to explain that the crisis could offer a moment of opportunity for the environment.

He explained: 'People have begun to realise that we have to put nature back at the centre of everything we do and put it at the centre of our economy.

'Before this nature has just been pushed to the peripheries, we've exploited and dug up and cut down everything as if there was no tomorrow, as if it doesn't matter.'

The Prince of Wales went on to say that without learning from this pandemic, there may be more to come from in the future, commenting: 'The more we erode the natural world, the more we destroy biodiversity, the more we expose ourselves to this kind of danger.

'We've had these other disasters with SARS and EBOLA and goodness knows what else, all of these things are related to the loss of biodiversity.

'So, we have to find a way this time to put nature back at the centre.

'We should have been treating the planet as if it was a patient long ago. No self-respecting doctor would ever have let the situation, if the planet is a patient, reach this stage before making an intervention.

'It's only catastrophes which concentrate the mind, which means, that for once, there might be some real impetus to tackle all these things that have been pushed to one side because everyone said, 'oh it's irrelevant'. But these are crucial things.'

Filming of Mission Impossible 7 to resume in September after coronavirus shut down production

Mission Impossible 7 will resume filming in September, after production was relocated by the coronavirus pandemic.

First assistant director Tommy Gormley said on Tuesday that Paramount are hoping to restart work on the Tom Cruise blockbuster this autumn, and 'visit all the countries' where they originally planned to film scenes.

Mission Impossible 7's release has been delayed from July 2021 to November 19, 2021, after the coronavirus pandemic forced the film to relocate from Venice to the UK, and eventually halt production indefinitely.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Tommy said: 'We hope to start shooting again in September.

'We were days from shooting in Venice – we were right at the epicentre when it all kicked off – so we had to shut down in Venice where we were four or five days from shooting.

'We hope to visit all the countries we planned to and look to do a big chunk of it back in the UK on the backlot and in the studio, so September through to end April/May is our targets. We are convinced we can do this.'

Tommy went onto hint that 'tens of thousands' of film industry staff needed to return to work, after almost all Hollywood films were put on hold as COVID-19 continued to spread.

He added: 'We have to do it safely and protect our colleagues, but it is definitely possible and we're working flat out to make it happen.'

Mission: Impossible 7 was originally scheduled to begin filming in Venice back in February, with stars including Ethan Hunt frontman Tom, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, Vanessa Kirby and Rebecca Ferguson reprising their roles.

Christopher McQuarrie, who directed the last two installments Rogue Nation and Fallout, was back behind the camera for the latest film.

But as COVID-19 spread rapidly in Italy, producers decided to move production to the UK, with the entire cast sent home by producers.

Christian couple sentenced to death in Pakistan for alleged blasphemy plead for freedom at final appeal

A Christian couple sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pakistan will now appear in court for the final hearing in their appeal after six years on death row.

Shagufta Kausar and her husband Shafqat Emmanuel, a poor Christian couple from the town of Gojra in Pakistan's Punjab region, will attend a final hearing at Lahore's High Court after being on death row since 2014.

They were arrested for sending blasphemous text messages that insulted the Prophet Muhammad to a local Imam.

Shagufta's brother Joseph said he visited the couple in jail where they told him the confession was extracted under torture.

'He told me the policeman hit [Shafqat] so hard that his leg was broken,' Joseph said.

He added that the conviction has taken a toll on the couple's four children who 'wish to see their parents again'.

As to the accusations against his family, Joseph, who asked to remain anonymous, said he thought the couple were illiterate so doubted they could have written the messages.

He told the BBC that his sister worked as a caretaker in a Christian school and that Shafqat was out of work, owing to a disability, at the time of their arrest.

Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in Pakistan and any conviction warrants a death sentence.

Even unproven allegations of insulting Islam can lead to assassinations and lynchings from furious mobs.

Though no-one has yet been hung for the crime, those who are set free face the wrath of extremist vigilantes.

The couple's lawyer, Saif ul Malook - who represented Asia Bibi and helped overturn her conviction in 2018 - said the couple's case was stronger than Bibi's but that judges are often 'fearful' to overturn rulings.

Some high-profile justices have been assassinated for releasing people accused of the crime.

'They have been used to target religious minorities, pursue personal vendettas and carry out vigilante violence.'

According to Malook, the couple believes one of their Christian neighbours bought a sim card in Shagufta's name and sent the messages to the Imam to settle a score.

The acquittal last October of Bibi, a Christian who had spent more than eight years on death row for blasphemy, provoked violent protests across Pakistan.

Bibi now lives in Canada with her family.

The incident happened at Ekanem’s residence at 12, Edim Ibangha Street, Big Qua Town, Calabar.

According to a source, Ekanem, who is in his 60s, claimed he was under the influence of alcohol.

A neighbour, who pleaded not to be named, revealed that Ekanem, “had sent the lady living with him to the market; then he lured the little girl into his apartment and started fingering her and broke her hymen in the process.

“It was the victim’s younger brother who is about two years old who told their mother that grandpa put his hand inside her sister’s bum-bum before their mother raised the alarm and the matter was reported to the police.”

The Principal Counsel, Basic Right Council Initiative, James Ibor, said, “This particular matter cannot be swept under the carpet and the suspect must face the full wrath of the law even though they are related.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, said, “The man is in our custody. I won’t say much until we get the medical report on the incident.”

SERAP drags FG to UN over education, health budgets cuts

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has dragged the Federal Government before the United Nations over the plans to cut the budgetary allocation to education and health care.

The group, in its petition, also urged the UN to prevail upon the Federal Government to drop the plan to spend N27bn on the renovation of the National Assembly complex.

SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oludare, said the petition was sent to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education, Ms. Koumbou Boly Barry; UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, Mr Dainius Puras; and the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, Mr Olivier De Schutter.

It said, “The budget cuts show failure to address the growing economic and social inequality in the country, and to genuinely address the consequences of Covid-19 on the poor and marginalised groups.

“Nigeria’s budget deficits are caused by excessive expenditures on politicians’ allowances and mismanagement.

“Nigerian authorities would only be able to commit to fiscal discipline if they prioritise cutting the allowances of lawmakers and the costs of governance in general, rather than cutting critical funding for healthcare and education.

“This would have been a more appropriate solution to addressing budget deficits, as this would increase the available resources for health care and education, which in turn would contribute to reducing socio-economic inequality.”
