Creative Nigerian Builds Solar-powered Tricycle In 21 Days (Photos)

Anthony Obinna Okafor is one of the many Nigerians who are not letting the challenges in the country deter them from pursuing their passion.

A graduate of Mechanical/Production Engineering, Okafor who studied at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, wants to be known as Elon Musk of Africa. "I want to be known as the man spearheading electric cars in Africa like Elon Musk is doing with his brand Tesla," he said.

His latest innovation is a solar-powered tricycle which he unveiled recently in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state. In a recent interview with Vanguard, Okafor disclosed that it took about three weeks to complete the solar-powered tricycle, popularly called Keke.

According to him, this was due to limited working tools and machines. He said he was supported by Ebonyi State Vocation College, noting that it wasn’t easy getting to the finished product with the greatest challenge being capital funding. Okafor admitted that materials like the electric motor, axle and controllers with few other accessories were imported. He, however, noted that such materials can be fabricated in Nigeria by him if he gets the necessary funding to commercialize this project.

On how the tricycle works, Okafor said it has solar panels and can charge itself on condition of cloudy weather. He said it can also be charged with the grid or with an external solar power supply of generator.

"On a full charge, it can go 60 to 70km. And on a sunny day, the added panels will extend range by another 10km," he added.

The young man said he is still contemplating on a name for his work but at the moment, he calls the tricycle OKAFOR like Ford, Toyota, Honda, Bajaj which are names of the inventors. He said if he has the opportunity of meeting President Muhammadu Buhari, he would ask for capita funding.

Nigerians are keeping up with the world as it advances in technology.

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-olu has presented the staff of office to the 15th Oniru of Iru land, HRM Oba Abdul-wasiu omognbolahan Lawal (Abisogun II)

R.a.p.e: Legalise stun guns for females, Oluwo tells FG

Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has advised the Federal Government to legalise the use of stun guns and pepper spray for females to defend themselves against rapists.

The monarch, in a press statement by his press secretary, Alli Ibraheem, urged the government to consider other means of tackling rape apart from punishing rapists.

He said, “The reported cases of raping is alarming and call for a serious concert by responsible stakeholders. Apart from a constitutional penalty against rapists, I want to charge the government to consider the legalisation of the use of stun guns and pepper spray by females as protective items against unapproved sexual attempts.

“Many ladies were raped and killed. I’ve strong trust that the items, when approved for females will protect them against such an unjust treatment and return sanctity to our society.

“By that, the constitutional provision is a long term punishment while pepper spray and stun gun are short term defence measure. The defence instruments could form part of females’ accessories in their handbags and purses.

“There are training sessions available overseas even in South Africa for females to learn how to use it in warding off attackers.”

While condemning the increasing cases of rape in society, Oluwo said no lady deserves to be raped.

He said, “The spate of reoccurrences is unassuming. It must be checkmated through further constitutional legislations to invite sanity to our society and respect the dignity of Nigerian females.

“Rapists are coward animals and not human. The trauma of their victims is an eternal curse of no remedy. Raped victims are no doubt mentally disturbed and emotional imbalance. When done with mutual consent and agreement, the two enjoin and enjoy in merriment.

“Raped victims should not be ashamed. Talk about it and you shall be assisted. It is never the end of life. Though, an ugly experience but should be shared overtly or covertly to unravel and penalize offenders and serve as a deterrent to others. A problem shared is a problem solved. If shared, many ladies will learn to prevent similar experience while the likes of perpetrators are warned against such.

“The perpetrators should not take advantage of a lady visiting your home. Even, a responsible husband and wife seek each others consent before engaging in sex. No lady deserves to be forced for sex. Sex is dignity and should be respected through mutual consent by both genders.

“Nigerian government should enforce a penalty against rapists. Legislators can come up with stricter legislation to protect the pride of Nigerian females and approve the use of defence items. Doing such will speak sense to greedy sexual men and restore normalcy.”

Police arrest Anambra billionaire, Pius Nweke over alleged illegal possession of gun

Fresh facts have emerged on the arrest of an Anambra billionaire, Chief Pius Nweke, the chairman and chief executive of Best Aluminum Company Ltd in Onitsha by a special squad from the office of the Inspector General of Police, IGP.

Nweke’s community, Abba in Njikoka local government area had raised an alarm yesterday that he was abducted on his way to his office and his whereabouts unknown.

But Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. John Abang said that Nweke was arrested by policemen from the office of the Inspector general of Police, IGP, over alleged illegal possession of an unlicensed pistol.

Abang, in a telephone interview, said: “Policemen of the IGP’s STS in Onitsha, while on patrol at the Awada area, intercepted a Lexus Jeep and when the vehicle and the occupants were searched, a pistol was found on one Pius Nweke who was in the car.

He has been taken into custody for further interrogation.

Already, he has been taken to Abuja because that is where STS has its headquarters.”

Nweke’s community, Abba and its neighbouring Ukpo community in Dunukofia local government area, have been in a land dispute for the past 50 years, with both communities claiming ownership of the disputed area.

Only last week, bulldozers accompanied by security operatives demolished the palatial compound of Chief Nweke and those of his family members on the allegation that Ukpo people were executing a court order obtained in connection with the land dispute.

The community’s main market had earlier been demolished on the ground that it was situated on Ukpo land, just as the walls of the secondary school in the town was destroyed, with security operatives permanently stationed there.

At the time Nweke was being paraded by the police in Onitsha over the illegal possession of the gun, hundreds of people from his community were at the Governor’s Lodge in the Anambra State capital pleading to Governor Willie Obiano to intervene in their protracted land dispute with Ukpo.

Meanwhile, the President-General of Abba Town Union, Mr. B.C.Anaekwe said in a statement that the arrest Nweke was the climax of the intimidation his people were suffering in the hands of their Ukpo neighbours.

His statement read: “At about 12 noon on 5th June, 2020, information filtered into Abba of the abduction of Chief Pius Nweke on his way to his office by of the Nigeria Police Force.

“It was confirmed that Chief Nweke was abducted by the men of the Nigerian police when his pictures in handcuffs with a gun in a background of a police station started circulating online. As at the time of this press statement, the whereabouts of Chief Nweke is still unknown.

“ We recall that Abba community has been in dispute over ownership of a large expanse of .land commonly called “Agu-Abba” with her neighbouring Ukpo community for which the Nigerian police was enlisted against the Abba community.

“Since June, 2019 citizens of the Abba community have been subjected to police intimidation, harassment and victimization with not less than 19 citizens of the Abba community charged to Courts for offences ranging from obstruction to armed robbery.

“At present, two out of the five persons arrested on 18th December 2019 in the Magistrate Court, Umudioka are still in the facility of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

“The Abba community hereby places the world on notice that if anything happens to Chief Pius Nweke, the Nigerian Police should be held responsible. We, therefore, call on President Mohammadu Buhari to save Abba community from the Nigerian Police.”

Toyboy set to inherit £150k after death of husband, 81, branded 'gold digger'

A man who is set to inherit hundreds of thousands of pounds following the death of his 81-year-old husband has been branded a "gold digger" and a "leech" by the late vicar's family.

Philip Clements, a retired Church of England vicar from Dover, passed away alone in hospital in Bucharest, Romania, on a ward that was closed to visitors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Following his death, his 27-year-old widower Florin Marin said he cried for two days but is now looking forward to enjoying his inheritance of a £150,000 life insurance payout and a £2,000-a-month-for-life pension.

He also receive a £100,000 house that Philip transferred into his name before he died.

Philip's family said they were horrified at Florin's reaction following his death and said he didn't even seemed upset when he called to tell them the news.

Retired Royal Mail driver Tony Clements spoke to Florin for the first time last Sunday after he called him to let him know Philip had died, reports The Sun Online.

The 71-year-old said: “He’s a gold digger. Why would a chap his age be interested in an 81-year-old man?

“If I was Philip, I’d have tried to find someone closer to my own age. But he obviously loved Florin.

“I don’t think Florin loved him. I had no problem with him being gay, of course I didn’t. There’s no reason to."

Tony said him and his brothers had stopped seeing Phillip as they felt "angry" about the 54 year age gap.

Philip's other brother Brian, 76, who served as a Royal Marine for 43 years, added: "Florin is a leech and he’s got what he always wanted."

But Florin today insisted that Philip wouldn't have wanted him to be unhappy, saying: "My darling people, it is not my fault that left me with this money.”

Tony said they never cared about getting any money from Philip and he only cared that he was healthy.

He added: “I don’t even know how much he had. As far as I knew, he was broke. He used to spend so much money on Florin, who just wanted designer things all the time."

Elton John’s amazing gift to the woman he jilted 50 years ago

After Elton John ended their relationship weeks before they were due to marry 50 years ago, their lives took different paths.

Linda Hannon had known him as plain old Reg Dwight and supported the aspiring rock star before he scored his first hit.

But songwriting partner Bernie Taupin talked him out of staying with her on his stag do – an event that was later referenced in the hit Somebody Saved My Life Tonight.

And while Elton, 73, is now a global superstar, Linda lives a low-key life as a doctor’s office manager in Dallas, Texas.

But she never resented him and has watched his career flourish with fondness.

So when she found herself in need of help, her thoughts turned to the old love she still refers to as Reg.

And she was delighted when he answered her call – with a little help from the Mirror.

Linda, 76, was in agony in recent months as she needs a knee replacement but was unable to have the op because she could not afford to take five weeks off work to recuperate.

Her hours at the surgery had been cut because of the Covid-19 pandemic and unpaid leave was not an option.

Linda said: “My knee is awful to walk on and I’ve been having shots... I thought of Reg and whether he could help. It was a long shot.

“I sent a couple of emails to his management and put in a couple of details only Reg might remember, such as the time we were driving up the A1 to Bernie’s parents for lunch and we had a car accident.

"I had my arm in a sling for a while and only he would know that.

“Then he came to my brother’s 21st birthday party. Reg, myself and my mother took the train to Newcastle.

"I remember him wearing a bottle green suit. I think it was the only one he had. They were the little things I did to prove who I was. But I never heard anything back.”

Linda said given the huge amount of fan mail and correspondence Elton gets, it was perhaps little surprise.

But undeterred, she turned to the Mirror in the hope that the star might read her story and help.

In her own words, she hoped she could “call in a favour” – not least as she had helped him and Bernie out financially as they chased the big-time.

Linda said: “In the late 60s, Reg and Bernie weren’t earning any money, so I was hoping, from one friend to another, whether they could help me through this financial blip.

"When Reg started out, I was paying the rent, bills and for the food. It was while they were trying to live their dreams.”

When the Mirror related her story to Elton’s team, they responded almost immediately – saying he would be delighted to help.

A source close to Elton told us: “When Elton heard about Linda’s plight, he didn’t hesitate for a second to help out.

“He remembers how good she was 50 years ago, when he and Bernie needed the support, and is really pleased to be able to help her in her hour of need.”

Linda said: “I am so touched by Reg. After all these years, it’s so kind.

"I am thrilled to bits that he is offering to help.”

On the run Diezani Allison now a Dominican citizen

Fresh evidence has now emerged in Nigeria of how former Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Diezani Allison Madueke, plotted and secured a foreign country’s citizenship and political appointment in order to secure immunity from prosecution, Vanguard reports.

Documents at the disposal of Vanguard indicate that she carefully planned and obtained the citizenship of the the Commonwealth of Dominican Republic, which subsequently appointed her as a Trade and Investment Commissioner in that country.

To show that the appointment and offer of citizenship were not accidental, Diezani’s offer and acceptance were completed a few days before she left office on June 1, 2015, barely two days before the expiration of her tenure on May 29, 2015.

According to the document she had perfected arrangements with the Office of the Prime Minister, Commonwealth of Dominica and lobbied to be appointed as Trade and investment Commissioner with effect from June 1, 2015.

The lobby actually worked.

In a letter dated May 29, 2015 and signed by Prime Minister Roosevelt Kerry,  Diezani was offered not only the citizenship of Dominica, a Caribbean island, but also an appointment as Trade and Investment Commissioner.

The offer also entailed the issuance of a Diplomatic Passport on  May 21, 2015 , with an expiry date of May 20, 2020, to the former powerful and influential minister, now cooling off in the United Kingdom.

Although the diplomatic visa expired on May 20 this year, she is said to be  immuned from arrest and prosecution by any law enforcement agency, including the Interpol. This is due to the fact that the 32-page diplomatic passport contains a restraining order against any arrest or prosecution.

The strange immunity order says:” The President of the Commonwealth of Dominica requests and requires in the name  of the Government  of Dominica all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer  to pass freely without let or hindrance and afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary”.

Diezani’s Dominican Republic Diplomatic Passport’s number is DP0000445.

In the appointment letter issued by Prime Minister Kerry,  Diezani was assigned the task of “directing  promotion and marketing of Dominica as a trade and investment domicile, as well as an emerging and unique tourist destination in the Caribbean”.

29 Fulani herdsmen killed by gunmen in military fatigues

No fewer than 29 Fulani herdsmen were massacred by men dressed in military fatigues, in a village in central Mali, a local government official and a Fulani association said on Saturday.

The attackers on Friday targeted the village of Binedama in the Mopti region, which has seen dozens of tit-for-tat ethnic massacres over the past few years.

The Fulani, semi-nomadic herders present across West Africa, have been accused by rival farming communities of supporting local jihadist groups, making them targets of violence from ethnic vigilante militias and sometimes government forces.

Moulaye Guindo, the mayor of the commune of Bankass, which neighbours the commune to which Binedama belongs, said between 20 and 30 people were killed by men in military attire.

Fulani association Tabital Pulaaku said 29 people were killed, including a 9-year-old girl. It blamed the attack on Malian soldiers, who it said surrounded the village in pick-up trucks before killing the villagers and setting houses on fire.

“The victims are all from the peaceful civilian population .. who had not committed any crime except for their ethnic identity,” Tabital Pulaaku said in a statement.

50 Senior Directors Fail Perm Secs’ Exam In Abuja

The Federal Government has shortlisted 41 directors for the final round of examination towards becoming permanent secretaries in the civil service.

The 41 directors emerged from the 91 candidates who sat an Information Communication Technology proficiency test on Thursday in Abuja.

This means 50 senior government officials who sat for the examination did not succeed.

A copy of the memo announcing the 41 successful candidates was obtained on Saturday.

The memo dated June 6, 2020 was signed by the Director Overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, I. A. Mairiga, on behalf of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan.

Mairiga noted that the 41 successful candidates would now take part in the final examination which is an oral interview slated for Monday.

The memo read, “Following the conduct of the ICT proficiency test for the appointment of permanent secretaries in the federal civil service on June 4, 2020, I am directed to invite the following 41 shortlisted candidates to the oral interview/interactive session.

“Accordingly, the candidates are to report for the interview on Monday, June 8, 2020 at the Olusegun Obasanjo Hall, Federal Secretariat Complex, Phase II, Abuja by 8am prompt.”

Only 16 out of the 41 final candidates are expected to become permanent secretaries.

Yemi-Esan had in an earlier circular issued in March indicated that examinations would be conducted to appoint 16 new permanent secretaries.

She had said 14 of the new permanent secretaries are meant to replace existing ones that are billed to retire this year, while the remaining two are meant to fill existing vacancies.

According to the March 23 circular, the 14 states with permanent secretaries that will retire this year are Kebbi, Kwara, Abia, Anambra, Cross River, Kaduna, Kano, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe and Jigawa.

The two states with existing vacancies are Zamfara and Kogi.

Yemi-Esan had reiterated that only officers in the mainstream of the federal civil service who attained the substantive rank of director on Salary Grade Level 17 on or before January 1, 2018 and who have updated their records on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System verification portal are eligible to sit for the examinations.

She added that to be eligible, such officials must hail from Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Cross River, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara States and should not be retiring from service earlier than on December 31, 2021.

She wrote, “Accordingly, the following officers shall not be accredited: directors that did not update their online records on the IPPIS verification portal (from April 5, 2017 up until it closed on May 23, 2018).

“Those that shall not be accredited also include serving directors retiring earlier than or on December 31, 2021; serving directors promoted in the last one year (2019); and directors undergoing disciplinary procedure.”

The last time permanent secretaries were appointed was in December 2019 when the Federal Government approved the appointment of nine new permanent secretaries.

Actors guilty of r.a.p.e should be banned — Patience Ozokwor

For most of the week, one thing that has been on the lips of many Nigerians is the issue of rape. This was triggered after it was reported that a young girl, Uwavera Omozuwa, had been r.a.p.e.d and killed in a church (Benin, Edo State) where she had gone to read. In the course of the week, several ladies made allegations of rape against their attackers, including those in the entertainment industry.

Expressing disgust at the act, popular actress, Patience Ozokwor, aka Mama G, told Sunday Scoop that actors found guilty of such conduct should be banned from the industry.

She said, “Yes (they should be banned) because they cannot represent us as an industry. The guilds in the industry have disciplinary committees and they won’t allow such people to stay. There is a standard punishment that is to be meted out to anyone found guilty of such act.

“It is heartbreaking whenever I hear that things like that happen in the entertainment industry because they (entertainers) have access to whatever they want. There is no girl they desire and approach that would not follow them, even when they (girls) know that some of them are married. Forcing a girl into (the act) is just stupid. My heart is breaking as you are telling me that it happens in the industry because I don’t go on social media anymore.”

Handing down advice for the womenfolk, she said, “Girls should stop dressing provocatively. It seems like they can’t do without skimpy wear. That was one of the reasons I shut down my boutique because if one doesn’t sell skimpy clothes, people would not buy. However, people with good background would not do that because they know it would bring shame to their families.

Some actresses think that when they dress that way, they would get roles but it is not true. Talent comes first. It is on set that one would be given the kind of dress one is to wear, so that one can properly portray the character one is playing. Many girls come in (the industry) and they want to make it by all means, so they fall into the wrong hands. Even some of the people they think are directors may not be professional directors. Real directors don’t have time to mess around like that.

“Ladies should take it easy. Becoming a star is not the ultimate. When I started my career, I didn’t know that there was anything like stardom. I was just doing what I enjoyed and it has turned out to be what it is today.

“Some parents even dress their children in skimpy clothes, saying they want to prepare them to be stars. Whenever they meet any one that promises to turn their children to stars, they would quickly hand them over to the person.”

I will ONLY be getting married at 75 - Yeni Kuti

Dancer and daughter of the late Afrobeat originator, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Yeni, has finally answered the question that many have been asking for a long time.

She told Sunday Scoop when she would eventually be getting married.

She said, “I have a partner and we have started our marriage plans. We would get married when I am 75 years old.”

Kuti also noted that the closure of event centres, including the New Afrikan Shrine, had taken its toll on the entertainment sector.

She said, “With this lockdown, I’m broke. Our kind of business is not what one can run online. People have to come to the Shrine to enjoy themselves and that’s when they patronise us.”

The retired dancer also maintained that it was wrong to flaunt luxurious items in the midst of excruciating poverty in the land.

She said, “I don’t do that (post flashy things). Even if I can afford it, I am not that kind of person. In a country where so many people are hungry, why should one want to flaunt designer products? You can do that if you are in America where most people are comfortable.

I could post a picture of myself dressed up but not wearing designer items. Life is transient. All the things in this world can’t be taken anywhere with one when one dies. Now, we are not even allowed to attend any social gathering, so if one has the best shoes and clothes, one can’t wear them to anywhere.”

My enemies are at work over corruption allegations- Obasa

The embattled Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has said that the corruption allegations against him by an online news medium were the handiwork of his enemies.

Obasa, who appeared before the nine-man Fact Finding Panel Committee of the House headed by Hon. Victor Akande (Ojo Constituency 1) on Saturday, insisted that the allegations were unfounded.

The Speaker stressed that the vehicles bought for the members of the House and other expenses made by the House were done with the approval of the House and that of the Fund Management Committee (FMU) headed by him.

“We bought Land Cruisers for Principal Officers of the House. The cars we buy for Principal Officers are always higher than those of other members and we followed the due process in the purchase.

“We went through the Public Procurement Agency (PPA) and others and the vehicles were distributed appropriately. It was agreed at the parliamentary meetings on about four occasions and the Clerk of the House is the secretary.

“Also, it is not true that my wife collects N10 Million monthly from the House. Anyone who says she does should come with proofs and evidences. My approval limit as the Speaker of the House is N100 million. Anything above that would have to be approved by the FMC.

The Speaker also debunked an allegation that N258 million was spent for the printing of invitation cards for the inauguration of the 9th Assembly.

He stressed that the whole event cost N61 Million and that N1.1 million was spent to print the invitation cards.

“It is not possible to spend N258 million to print invitation cards. We are not involved in such a frivolous expenditure,” he added.

On the expenditure of N80 Million as estacode for the training of women in Dubai, the Speaker said that wives of 20 lawmakers attended the event and that he was there to declare the event open.

“We gave N4 million to each of the participants for air ticket, hotels, feedings and local travel.

“Air ticket to Dubai alone is about N2 million. Some of these allegations were raised for a crusade to get the Speaker out of office.

“The House of Assembly is above common standard of excellence and we have to train people, and this comes with a cost. Learning is not cheap and I have never collected N80 Million for estacode at a go before,” he said.

Defending the purchase of eight Hiace buses for committee works in the Assembly, Speaker Obasa said that it was discovered that the House was spending a lot of money to repair vehicles, which he said was why the House decided to buy the buses and that the buses were there for everybody to see with documents to defend the purchases.

The Speaker also denied the allegation that he spent N53 million for a trip to the United States of America with his mistress.

Sokoto discharges all 101 patients, records 14 deaths

The Sokoto State Taskforce Committee on COVID-19 has discharged all 101 isolated coronavirus patients in the state and recorded 14 deaths.

The Committee’s Chairman, Ali Inname, who disclosed this at a news conference in Sokoto, said that as of Friday there was no patient at the isolation centre in the state.

Mr Inname added that the first index case was recorded on April 19 in the state, with 731 samples collected, while 655 contacts completed the 14 days of follow up.

The chairman who is also the state’s Commissioner for Health, explained that the committee received 839 alerts from across the state and that all of them were investigated.

He said that the patients were from eight local government areas of the state.

According to him, men constituted 85 per cent of the patient population.

He said that the committee’s activities would continue as many test results were still pending.

He added that testing of suspected patients would continue, stressing that any positive person detected would be taken to the isolation centre.

Mr Inname, therefore, urged people to continue to patronise hospitals as service delivery had fully resumed in recognition of the fact that access to healthcare had declined due to the pandemic.

The commissioner also advised people to abide by the safety guidelines of wearing face masks, constant washing of hands with soap, and using sanitisers as well as observing physical distance, among others.

Kardashians say Blac Chyna has 'stooped to new low' as she accuses them of racism

Tensions between Blac Chyna and the Kardashian clan show no sign of easing, with the model now accusing the family of racism.

In the latest twist of their legal battle, Chyna's attorney is claiming her client's race is the reason that reality show Rob & Chyna never got a second season on E!.

The war between the two parties has been raging since 2017 when Chyna sued the entire Kardashian family claiming they went behind her back to get reality show Rob & Chyna cancelled, which she had starred in alongside former fiancé Rob Kardashian.

That lawsuit came a month before Rob and his sister Kylie Jenner accused Chyna of battery, when she allegedly tied to choke him with a phone charger cord.

Addressing the latest accusations of racism in the legal battle, Kardashian-Jenner's family attorney Marty Singer said Chyna had 'stooped to a new low'.

Marty Singer told TMZ: "This is a 2 year old lawsuit in which Chyna has changed her defense more times than we can count. Sadly, unsurprising to anyone, she has stooped to a new low, changing her defense to try to leverage the emotions and pain of the moment, insulting the pain and suffering of real victims of racial injustice and systemic racism."

He added: "We take these allegations very seriously and once again, there is no Rob & Chyna show if there is no Rob & Chyna."
