Mum jailed after her 9 year-old son mauled to death by dog while she took cocaine

A mother whose nine-year-old boy was killed by a dog while she partied with its owner in a nearby caravan has been jailed for two years.

Frankie Macritchie was mauled to death by Sadie Totterdell’s 45kg American bulldog Staffordshire cross in April last year at Tencreek Holiday Park in Looe, Cornwall.

He had been left alone with the dog, named Winston, while his mum Tawney Willis took cocaine, drank and listened to music with the owner and other friends in a nearby mobile home.

Truro Crown Court heard how Frankie died from a loss of blood after sustaining 54 injuries, the most serious of which were to his head and neck. Willis returned to to check in on Frankie at 4.30am and was overheard crying ‘My baby, my baby’ after finding him dead and covered in blood.

Willis, 31, admitted a charge of child neglect, and was handed a two year sentence. Judge Carr described the mother’s decision to leave her child in a confined space with the animal as ‘grossly negligent’.

He added: ‘The scene you found I know will haunt you for the rest of your life and you have developed PTSD as a result of what you saw and experienced.’ Totterdell, 29, also from Plymouth, admitted owning a dog dangerously out of control and was jailed for three years.

Judge Carr added: ‘Winston was an extremely powerful and – as you can see from what happened – potentially dangerous dog. Yet a decision was taken to leave Winston and Frankie in that caravan alone.

‘I accept entirely that for the majority of his life, Winston had been a docile, happy, well-cared for dog but his size and strength must have been obvious to everybody.’

He said previous incidents including when Winston bit a young child, leaving them in need of medical treatment, should have been a ‘red flag’.

Totterdell was also banned from owning or having responsibility over a dog for 10 years. In a statement, the victim’s family said: ‘Frankie was a special young boy. He was funny, caring and kind – his smile would melt your heart.

‘He was always joking around and he loved everyone. Frankie was just becoming a little lad, growing fast, and in a blink of an eye he was gone.

‘The impact of our boy’s passing on us is huge. We are truly heartbroken.’ ‘We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the help love support and kindness over the last 14 months. The love and compassion for our boy Frankie has been unbelievably beautiful.’

Amotekun begins Oyo operation in July- Governor Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday said  Operation Amotekun would become operational in one month’s time.

Makinde stated this in his address at the first anniversary of the Oyo State House of Assembly at Agodi, Ibadan.

The governor said, “We are constituting the Amotekun Corps which, as you are aware, will complement the efforts of the federal security in securing our state. Within the next one month, they will be fully operational.

“Once the House of Assembly approves the choice of the commandant and chairman, it will be operational.”

On the incessant rape cases in the state, Makinde said the government would strengthen the legislation to address it.

He stated that he had sent an executive bill to the House, adding that the bill would soon be transmitted by the House.

He said, “I commend the moves by this legislature to review the laws on rape and sexual assault. We all know that one of the best ways to address any type of crime is to strengthen the legislation around it.

“On our part, we will do well to enforce the laws as requested by the judiciary. All the arms of government must continue to show zero tolerance for sexual violence. Only in this way would we honour those who have been victims of the heinous crimes and ensure that the rest of the people are protected.”

Women’s eggs prefer some men’s sperm over others, research shows

Whatever the level of attraction a woman feels for a man, the same may not always be the case for her eggs.

That’s according to a new study that looked into the chemicals used by a female egg to attract male sperm.

‘Human eggs release chemicals called chemoattractants that attract sperm to unfertilized eggs. We wanted to know if eggs use these chemical signals to pick which sperm they attract,’ said John Fitzpatrick, an associate professor at Stockholm University, which partnered with the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) for the study.

The scientists specifically looked at follicular fluid, which surrounds the eggs and contains the chemicals that attract sperm. They wanted to see if the fluids from different women attracted certain sperm more than others.

And, to put it bluntly, it does. ‘Follicular fluid from one female was better at attracting sperm from one male, while follicular fluid from another female was better at attracting sperm from a different male,’ said Professor Fitzpatrick.

‘This shows that interactions between human eggs and sperm depend on the specific identity of the women and men involved.’

‘Research on the way eggs and sperm interact will advance fertility treatments and may eventually help us understand some of the currently ‘unexplained’ causes of infertility in couples.’

Michael O'Neill: Stoke City manager tests positive for Covid-19

Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill has tested positive for Covid-19 after the latest round of testing on Monday.

A planned practice match between Stoke and Manchester United was cancelled at short notice on Tuesday once the situation became apparent.

Stoke had arrived at United's Carrington training base and were in the academy building when they found out.

O'Neill, 50, had tested negative in the previous five rounds of testing.

Stoke said the former Northern Ireland boss will now follow the relevant guidance and have a period of isolation.

The Championship club also confirmed on Tuesday that O'Neill will be in regular virtual contact with his coaching staff and players.

Assistant manager Billy McKinlay will take charge of training as the Potters prepare for their game against Reading on June 20.

City sit 17th in the Championship, three points above the relegation zone.

COVID-19: NYSC proposes camp reopening

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it has embarked on measures that will ensure safe and efficient operations post COVID-19 restrictions on socio-economic activities in the country.

Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, the Director, Press and Public Relations of NYSC, said this in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

The statement quoted Brg.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the Director-General of the scheme, saying this during a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, in Abuja.

Ibrahim informed the NCDC boss that NYSC suspended the 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Orientation Course just one week into the exercise as a proactive measure to avert the spread of COVID-19 to any of the orientation camps.

He said other operations of the scheme were scaled down in line with the Federal Government’s restrictions order.

Ibrahim said that the passing-out of the 2019 Batch ‘B’ Stream One corps members was low-keyed with full adherence to the COVID-19 prevention protocols.

He said conscious of the possibility of the further or complete lifting of lockdown, the strategies mapped out by the NYSC management had taken care of various scenarios, and would be presented to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 through the NCDC for guidance.

The NYSC director-general said the suspended 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One orientation course would be completed when the scheme received the green light from the PTF.

He also briefed Ihekweazu on the various COVID-19 interventions made by the scheme especially through corps members’ activities all over the country, including sensitisation, production and distribution of face masks.

Others, he said, are liquid soaps, hand sanitiser, automated disinfection chambers as well as automated and foot-operated liquid soap, hand sanitiser and water dispenser.

Ibrahim, therefore, solicited the PTF’s support in the funding of mass production of the automated disinfection chambers for use in all the NYSC orientation camps.

He commended the NCDC for its role in the overall national efforts at containing the COVID-19.

Responding, Ihekweazu commended NYSC for its support to the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic through corps member’s activities.

He particularly expressed delight at the fabrication of handwashing machines and production of disinfectants among other interventions.

Ihekweazu, who praised the contributions of the scheme to the unity and development of the country, stressed that it deserved every form of support to enable it to succeed.

The NCDC boss assured that the proposals presented by the NYSC director-general would be studied and recommendations made to the appropriate authorities.

Japanese doctor who discovers ‘Kawasaki disease’ dies at 95

The Japanese doctor who discovered the mysterious “Kawasaki’s disease” ― recently in the headlines for some similarities to coronavirus ― has died of natural causes aged 95, his research NGO said on Wednesday.

Paediatrician Tomisaku Kawasaki first noticed the disease in the 1960s as a junior doctor when he began treating children with fever, red eyes, and a rash with no clear cause.

He reported 50 cases as an unknown disorder in 1967, since when the condition ― which mostly affects very young children ― has become internationally recognised as “Kawasaki disease.”

Symptoms can include swelling of the hands and feet, swollen lymph glands in the neck and irritation and inflammation of the mouth, lips, and throat, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The disease “occurs worldwide, with the highest incidence in Japan, and it most often affects boys and younger children,” the CDC said.

The mysterious illness was in the news again this year, after physicians in various countries reported Kawasaki-like conditions as possible complications rising among young people with the coronavirus.

However, scientists are yet to confirm a meaningful link between Kawasaki disease and the pandemic.

Kawasaki was in good health until recently, staying active in the medical community while also working to promote a better understanding of the disease among the public.

But he died in a hospital in Tokyo “due to his advanced age”, said the Japan Kawasaki Disease Research Center, which the physician led until last year.

Roger Federer out of tennis until 2021 after knee surgery

Twenty-time Grand Slam singles champion Roger Federer said Wednesday he would be sidelined until 2021 after undergoing his second knee operation in a matter of months.

The 38-year-old Swiss said he needed follow-up arthroscopic surgery “a few weeks ago” after undergoing a similar keyhole procedure in February.

Federer, whose last Grand Slam win was the 2018 Australian Open, said he “experienced a setback during (his) initial rehabilitation”.

“I plan to take the necessary time to be 100 percent ready to play at my highest level,” he said in a statement on Twitter.

“I will be missing my fans and the tour dearly but I will look forward to seeing everyone back on tour at the start of the 2021 season.”

The announcement is likely to renew speculation about retirement for Federer, who holds the record for men’s Grand Slam singles titles and was last month named as the world’s highest-paid athlete.

Federer, whose first major trophy was in 2003, lies just ahead of his fierce rivals Rafael Nadal (19) and Novak Djokovic (17) on the all-tim

The announcement is likely to renew speculation about retirement for Federer, who holds the record for men’s Grand Slam singles titles and was last month named as the world’s highest-paid athlete.

Federer, whose first major trophy was in 2003, lies just ahead of his fierce rivals Rafael Nadal (19) and Novak Djokovic (17) on the all-time list.
After the initial operation Federer had originally planned to return for the now cancelled grass court season this month. His last tournament match was on January 30 in the Australian Open semi-final, where he lost to eventual champion Djokovic.

His last appearance on court was in front of 51,954 fans – touted by organisers as a world record for tennis — at a charity match against Nadal in Cape Town in early February.

Tennis ground to a halt in March because of the coronavirus and due to travel restrictions, the globetrotting sport faces an uncertain route back.

In April, Federer said he was “devastated” when Wimbledon, where he has won a record eight titles, was cancelled for the first time since World War II.

Federer, known for his elegant style of play, has got off lightly with injuries during a career in which he has won 103 singles titles, including all four majors.

He previously had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee — the first operation of his career – in early 2016, after suffering a freak injury while running a bath for his daughters.

But after failing to win a title that year Federer returned strongly in 2017, winning seven tournaments including the Australian Open and Wimbledon – his most prolific season in a decade.

Dad on a WORLDWIDE search for donor after being hit with a RARE cancer [photos]

A man suffering from a rare cancer has begged for a stem cell donor to come forward and save his life.

Dad-of-one Tony Ferreira, 40, from the Channel Island of Jersey, suffers from a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma called Sezary syndrome, in which white blood cells become cancerous and aggressively attack the skin.

Mr Ferreira, originally from the island of Madeira, Portugal, was diagnosed in 2017 but first noticed symptoms in 2012 when he suffered a small skin rash on his lower back which did not go away.

The rash developed and his hands and feet would split open. Mr Ferreira then noticed lumps in his groin and under his arms.

About 90% of Mr Ferreira's body is now affected by the rare cancer, and his best chance of survival is blood stem cell donation.

The charity DKMS is co-ordinating the worldwide search for a donor, but Mr Ferreira's Portuguese heritage is making it much more difficult for him to find a match.

Mr Ferreira's parents and four siblings have been checked as a potential match, but none are suitable.

In March, Mr Ferreira's doctors decided to treat him with a new anti-cancer chemotherapy drug (mogamulizumab) but the trial was then delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

His wife Osvalda, who worked as a housekeeper for a care home in Jersey, had been keeping the family afloat financially, but was then advised to take temporary leave due to the risk she might contract Covid-19 and pass it on to her husband.

Mrs Ferreira said: "Tony's condition is bad enough, but for thousands of patients living with cancer in the UK, Covid-19 has delayed many treatments.

"We're not sure yet when we can begin travelling to London for treatment or what the new normal will look like.

"But we pray that a stranger will help us to continue our lives together for many years to come.

"I long to hold Tony's hands again, without his protective gloves on.

"Tony has been wearing his blue plastic gloves so long now that I've almost forgotten how his hands feel without them.

"He has such strong hands and holding them would reassure me that everything is going to be all right."

Jonathan Pearce, chief executive officer at DKMS UK, said the charity had seen a 50% drop in the number of people coming forward to be donors due to coronavirus.

He added: "We are hugely concerned about the impact Covid-19 is having on those who rely on a blood stem cell donor.

"While many stem cell transplants are still going ahead, the logistics around supporting blood stem cell donors to travel to hospital, and then arranging the transport of the stem cells to the transplant centre, have become much more challenging and complex.

"There are also transplants that have been delayed, but once the pandemic is over we know there will be a backlog of patients in urgent need of an unrelated blood stem cell donor.

"Sadly though, in some of those cases there's a risk that the disease could progress further, and a transplant may no longer be possible once this is all over."

Woman accuses hospital of switching her newborn baby with a dead one

A family in Nakuru’s Section 58 Estate has called for an investigation, accusing Nakuru Level Five Hospital of switching their newborn baby with a dead one.

Alice Ochuka said that she delivered a bouncing baby boy at the hospital through Caesarean section but after two days of breastfeeding the baby, the hospital informed her he had died.

Hospital documents that were given to Ochuka, however, do not match her description of the baby she delivered.

She said the hospital documents purported that her baby died during birth.

Further, the documents allegedly given to her including the file number do not tally with the file containing the dead baby that was registered under a different name, John Ng’ang’a.

She said her journey to the hospital started while at Bondeni dispensary on May 21, after her blood pressure shot up leading to her transfer to the Nakuru Level Five Hospital.

The woman said that she delivered her baby on May 29, and that the child was fine and even the nurses complimented her for the healthy-looking boy.

Two days later, as was her routine to the nursery to breastfeed the baby, Ochuka said that she found nurses at the entrance where they accused her of taking off her baby’s wrist tag.

She said that the nurses on duty demanded that she produce the name tag since the baby could not be accounted for.

After a few minutes of search, they broke to her the news that her baby had died under unclear circumstances.

Amidst the confusion, Ochuka said the nurses persuaded her to sign forms that indicated that the baby was dead and that she had confirmed the death having been brought a body of a child as evidence.

However, she said the body of the child given to her had a birthmark on the face whereas her child did not have any visible birthmark.

Now she wants investigations launched into the conduct of the nurses at the nursery.

It was the woman’s aunt, Lilian Adhiambo, who noted the anomaly in the identification of the dead baby.

Adhiambo said that she had gone to pay Sh2,000 for the disposal of the body when she noticed that the baby had been registered as John Ng’ang’a.

She said there was a tense moment as the in-charge of accounts was verifying the hospital documents, insisting to know how she was related to the said John Ng’ang’a.

But the hospital superintendent, Joseph Mburu, admitted that there was a mistake made in the birth notification document indicating that the baby was born dead.

Dr. Mburu said that the boy was born alive and taken to the nursery but promised an investigation despite the body having been disposed of.

The hospital administrator told the woman on Monday to take the documents to his office for further investigations.

Russian chefs stage n.a.k.e.d protest after coronavirus lockdown leaves them broke

Russian chefs have taken part in an extraordinary n.a.k.e.d lockdown protest after coronavirus closed their restaurants.

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a national lockdown on March 28 – with the capital Moscow following suit a couple of days later.

The measure undoubtedly saved lives, but it also stripped restaurant owners of their income.

Now hundreds of bar, restaurant and cafe employees have staged a cheeky protest urging the president to ease the lockdown.

They have posted photographs of themselves n.a..k.e.d with carefully positioned plates, cups, saucepans, bottles, bar stools and napkin holders.

Their demand is for authorities to allow them to start serving clients as the country gradually eases measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

"We are n.a.k.e.d because we are left with nothing," said Arthur Galaychyuk, owner of the Relab Family bar chain in the city of Kazan, whose 20 employees took part in the campaign.

Restaurants in Kazan will be allowed to open their summer terraces on June 11 after more than two months of lockdown.

"We don't want to stage a strip show or to fool around, we only want one thing – to work," said Pavel, a chef from the Siberian city of Novosibirsk, in a post with a group picture of his colleagues wearing only masks and holding kitchenware.

"We don't pose more of a risk then supermarkets, shopping malls, hair salons or public transport," Pavel's post said.

Authorities in Novosibirsk have not yet announced when local restaurants can open.

27-year old woman who is getting divorced from her 76-year old husband is getting surgeries to be a s.e.x icon

A self-confessed “blonde bimbo” forked a whopping £60,000 on her mission to look like a s.e.x doll.

Sapphire Saint has gone under the knife for three boob jobs, liposuction, a nose job, eye lift, filters and Botox.

The 27-year-old, from LA, California, said her look is partly paid for by cash from her 76-year-old former sugar daddy, who is now her ex-husband.

Thanks to her partner, Sapphire has been able to enlarge her boobs from an A cup to a H, while the procedures on her face are to keep her skin looking baby smooth.

And her plastic surgery obsession has attracted a lot of followers online who adore her as much as her family and friends.

Sapphire said: “My first surgery was paid for by my sugar daddy who wanted me to have a fake look, but now I self-finance because I earn more.

“He and I got married but we are currently in the middle of a divorce. He helped me get out of a bad financial situation but I didn’t have much in common with him because he’s 76 years old.

“I’ve wanted to be a s*x doll for my entire adult life. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a s*x icon and lusted after.

“I would dream about having a sugar daddy and living in Hollywood. I met some people that were into ‘bimbofication’ and I finally understood what was turning me on.

“So far, I’ve had three breast surgeries, a nose job, and an eye job, liposuction in my cheeks – as well as filler and Botox.

“Before my breasts were an A cup but now, I’m a busty 30H and I plan on going bigger. I have what are called ‘expanders’ which means I can fill them up by 250cc each month."

Sapphire has daily hypnosis sessions which form part of her four-hour routine she goes through to get ready for the day.

Iran to execute spy convicted of helping US kill Soleimani

An Iranian national convicted of spying for the US and Israel by helping target top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani will be executed, Iran's judiciary said on Tuesday.

Mahmoud Mousavi Majd was convicted of spying on Iran's armed forces, which led to the killing of Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds Force, in a US drone strike in Iraq.

Mahmoud Mousavi Majd was convicted of spying on Iran's armed forces "especially the Quds Force and on the whereabouts and movements of martyr General Qassem Soleimani" for large sums of money from both Israel's Mossad and the CIA, judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili told a televised news conference.

Esmaili offered little information about the convicted man.

The decision immediately raised questions about how Majd would have had access to Soleimani's travel information. The Iranian judiciary spokesman did not say when Majd would be executed, other than that it would be “soon".

He also stopped short of directly linking the information allegedly offered by Majd to Soleimani's death.

Only God will reward Abacha for transforming Nigeria - Former aide, Hamza Al-Mustapha

Hamza Al-Mustapha has said only God will reward Sani Abacha, a former military ruler who died in 1998, for transforming Nigeria.

Marking the 22nd anniversary of the death of Abacha on Monday, Al-Mustapha who served as chief security officer to the late dictator said his death is a big loss to the nation, and what he did for Nigeria will “not be forgotten in the annals of history and generations yet unborn”.

According to him, the late Abacha found only $200 million in the country’s foreign reserve when he took over power, and before he died, he was able to stabilise the economy and had saved over $900 billion in the reserve.

He said during the Abacha regime, the dollar was sold at N85 and there was no inflation despite all the problems and challenges confronting the country.

“Only God will reward General Sani Abacha for the laudable initiative he made in transforming the country to an enviable height,” he said.

The late ruler’s regime was characterised by human rights violations, and years after his death, Nigeria has continued to recover monies he looted and stashed away in different banks outside of the country.

Al-Mustapha, however, said his late boss is deliberately being attacked by some disgruntled elements who always portray his bad side to the public and hiding the good sides.

He also said since the demise of Abacha, one of the things that had left him unhappy was how former President Olusegun Obasanjo ceded Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon.

He said he was aware of the conspiracy involved by some Nigerians who conspired with foreign forces to deprive Nigeria of the oil rich Bakassi Peninsula.

“I participated in the war for good two years in Bakassi. I am quite aware of the quantum of crude oil deposit laying there especially the amount of crude oil deposit in Bakassi which is by far more than what obtained in present day Nigeria,” he said.

Woman is jailed after her bulldog kills 9-year old boy

A dog owner has been jailed after her American bulldog mauled a nine-year-old boy to death in a caravan.

Frankie Macritchie died after he was attacked by the American bulldog Staffordshire cross owned by Sadie Totterdell, 29.

She was staying at the Tencreek Holiday Park in Looe in Cornwall and invited the boy's mum, Tawnee Willis, 31.

Frankie was left alone in a caravan with Winston, who had previously bitten another child, on April 13 last year, Truro Crown Court heard.

Totterdell and Frankie's mum were at a drug-fuelled party in a different caravan.

During the night, the dog – which has since been put down – attacked the child as he slept and bit him 54 times.

Frankie, from Plymouth in Devon, bled to death.

Totterdell pleaded guilty at Truro Crown Court to being the owner/person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in the death. She was jailed for three years.

His mother was jailed for two years after admitting neglecting a young person, causing unnecessary suffering/injury.

A postmortem revealed that Frankie had 54 bites, mainly on his face, neck, and chest.

A portion of his scalp tissue had been torn off and one of his ears was hanging on by a thread.
