Heartbreaking story of how Boko Haram killed 81 villagers

A survivor of the massacre by Boko Haram terrorists of 81 villagers of Faduma Kolomdi, Gubio in Borno State, has narrated how it happened.

Modu Gana said that the attackers stormed the village on Tuesday in three Hilux vans and motorcycles, telling them that they came to preach the word of God to the people.

“They asked us to remove all our charms, cutlasses, bows and arrows, as well as other spiritual protection for special prayers.

“Immediately we did that, they began shooting at us from different directions.

“Many people escaped with bullet wounds, while seven others, including our village head, were abducted by the terrorists,” he said.

Gana said that more than 2,400 livestock had been rustled by the terrorists.

He also told Governor Babagana Zulum that the community was attacked three times by the terrorists within the last one month.

Zulum visited the village on Wednesday and confirmed the killing of 81 people.

He said that 13 persons were injured while fleeing the attack, while seven others sustained various degrees of injury.

The governor further explained that 49 of the deceased had already been buried before his arrival, while 32 bodies of the victims had been taken away by their families.

Zulum recalled that the terrorists, who attacked Gajiram LGA some months ago, were the same ones who carried out the attack; describing it as “very unfortunate”.

The Governor said that the only positive option to end the massacre on the vulnerable communities was to dislodge the terrorists in their strong hold, in the shores of Lake Chad.

“We have been advocating for this for a very long time. The Tumbus and other shores of Lake Chad must be cleared completely, then people will get rest of mind. Anything less than this is a temporary measure.

“That requires a lot of support from the Federal Government such as blocking of the leakage from our neighbouring countries by the Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF),” he said.

Zulum said that the state government on its part, would adopt measures to protect the people from further attacks, including merging smaller communities with larger ones, where they could be provided with effective security.

“This village from Gubio town is over 35 kilometers. Due to the nature of the vast land, the insurgents can easily sneak into the community to cause havoc. The military can come here and relocate them, but at the end, they may come back,” he said.

A mass burial was conducted for the deceased.

Another black man held by cops who yelled 'I can't breathe' died in similar case to George Floyd

The death of another black man who shouted "I can't breathe" while being restrained by police officers has been ruled a homicide.

In scenes similar to the George Floyd tragedy, Manuel Ellis, 33, was arrested by police in Washington on March 3 after he allegedly tried to get into vehicles that had people in them.

This led to a physical altercation between Tacoma officers and Ellis, who was combative, according to police.

Ellis was physically restrained by officers, who called for medical help after the father-of-two yelled that he couldn't breathe, but he died shortly after.

Earlier this week the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Ellis died of respiratory arrest due to hypoxia due to physical restraint.

Hypoxia is a condition in which the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply.

Police confronted Ellis at 11.22pm after he allegedly harassed a woman at an intersection.

Officers say he repeatedly banged on their police car so called for backup.

According to the Tacoma mayor's office, an investigation into the death has been opened.

Mayor Victoria Woodards said: "We pause amidst our struggle with the current public health and economic crisis, as well as the flood of emotions stirred up by the tragic and unacceptable death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and reflect on the grief and sadness of Manuel Ellis' family and loved ones.

"We pause and share their grief, because every loss of life matters."

Ed Troyer, of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, said: "He picked up the officer by his vest and slam-dunked him on the ground."

Ellis was handcuffed and paramedics were called - three minutes after police initially confronted him.

It was during the police phone call to the paramedics where Ellis reportedly shouted "I can't breathe".

When they arrived, Ellis lost conciousness and after first responders worked on him for 40 minutes, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tacoma police identified four officers involved in restraining Ellis - Christopher Burbank, 34, Matthew Collins, 37, Masyih Ford, 28, and Timothy Rankine, 31.

They were placed on paid administrative leave following the incident.

A vigil for Ellis was held on Wednesday night in Tacoma.

A GoFundMe page has been setup in his memory.

A post on the page reads: "Manuel was a young father who loved his son and daughter and a talented musician at his church.

"At the time of his death he was continuing to grow in the fullness of his potential.

"No matter where he went he had his bible in his hand, a testament to his new found faith that he used to bring his family closer together through the church.

"He raised his daughter and his nieces and nephews with the understanding that because they were Black their conduct must reflect the understanding that being killed by police was a very real possibility for them and would always be justified by the broader society."

NIMC says Nigerians are not coming forward for identification

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says more than 100 million Nigerians have no form of identification.

Aliyu Aziz, director-general of the NIMC, disclosed this during a meeting with editors held via Zoom on Wednesday.

Aziz, who spoke on the topic: “Strategic Roadmap for ID Development”, said less than 50 percent of the country’s population is not enrolled in the commission’s database.

“Over 100 million Nigerians have no identity (ID). These include the poorest and the most vulnerable groups, such as the marginalised – women and girls, the less-educated people, migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, people with disabilities and people living in rural and remote areas,” he said.

“The estimated population of Nigeria stands at 200 million. Only about 38 percent of the population have any form of ID.”

According to the NIMC boss, the commission has issued 41.5 million unique identifiers, known as national identification numbers (NIN), since the commencement of identity registration and enrolment in 2012.

4-year old boy shot dead by ex-soldier at his birthday party

A former soldier shot dead a four-year-old boy at the child’s own Incredible Hulk-themed birthday party, police have said.

Birthday boy Enzo dos Santos died after being shot in the chest at point-blank range in front of horrified parents, two siblings and other party guests.

Police are still investigating whether the youngster was killed by accident or targeted deliberately when he was shot dead during the party in Piabeta, a town near Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Pedro Pevidor, who had just left the army, allegedly gatecrashed the party, and is now insisting his revolver went off by accident after falling to the ground.

Pevidor, who boasted of his army background by posing in military fatigues with weapons including bazookas on social media, was arrested after the incident.

The 22-year-old, who was remanded in custody on Tuesday after appearing before a judge in a closed court hearing, is being investigated on suspicion of homicide.

Enzo’s dad Douglas dos Santos, 37, has claimed the alleged killer gatecrashed the party and he had to pull Pevidor's car keys out of the ignition when he tried to flee after the shooting.

Enzo'ss mum claimed she heard a shot after an argument between Pevidor and children at the bash, it is said.

Douglas, whose wife rushed her son to hospital where he died on Sunday shortly after arrival, told local media in an emotional interview: “Enzo had been asking us for the past month, ‘Is my birthday party tomorrow?’.

"He was very excited.

“We received them well and gave them food and drink even though they hadn’t been invited.

South African cigarette makers challenge sales ban

A South African court on Wednesday began hearing a controversial petition challenging a tobacco sales ban imposed by the government in March as part of stringent measures to control the spread of coronavirus.

The Fair-trade Independent Tobacco Association (FITA), which represents some cigarette makers, took the government to the Pretoria High Court challenging the “draconian” ban.

“We have termed it a draconian prohibition, a ban of this nature is probably the most dramatic of any measure that can be taken,” argued FITA lawyer Arnold Subel.

He said there were no facts to justify the “irrational” ban which he said was driving the industry underground and killing a legal multi-million dollar business.

“This is heaven for the illicit trade, they can charge what they want, they can mix it with what they want, they can make it more addictive… all sorts of narcotic substances can be added.”

State lawyers said the ban was imposed to reduce access to cigarettes and force people to stop smoking.

“The purpose of the prohibition is obviously to reduce the availability of cigarettes,” government lawyer Marumo Moerane said.

He conceded the ban did not completely eliminate smoking but said there is a reasonable possibility of reducing it, which helped to prevent overburdening of the health system.

But Subel said forcing smokers to go “cold turkey” was cruel.

It’s like using “a sledgehammer to beat people into submission, to force people to go into … cold turkey on smoking, it’s an act of cruelty, and people are desperate,” said Subel.

The ban came in to effect on March 27 along with a ban on alcohol sales.

President Cyril Ramaphosa lifted the ban on alcohol sales on June 1, but kept the moratorium on tobacco “due to the health risks associated with smoking.”

The ban has already cost the government coffers more than 300 million rand ($18 million) in taxes, according to tax chief Edward Kieswetter.

More than 600,000 people have signed a petition calling for an end of the ban.

An Ondo State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure, on Wednesday, remanded in police custody two persons for being in possession of human heads.

The defendants, Adewale Abiodun and Abel Olomofe, who are cemetery workers with the Akure South Local Government Area, were arrested by the police for allegedly exhuming corpses and cutting off their heads at a cemetery on the Imafon Road, Akure

The counsel for the defendants, Femi Adetoye and Jide Agboola, pleaded with the court to admit them to bail.

In his ruling, Magistrate Tope Aladejana, said the bail application was not yet mature and ordered the prosecutor to send the case file to the DPP’s office for legal advice, after which the application might be considered.

Insurgents pretended to be preachers, killed 81 people, survivor tells Gov. Zulum

The survivor of Boko Haram’s Tuesday attack on Fanduma Koloram, in the Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State told the State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Wednesday that the insurgents pretended to be Islamic religious crusaders, collected arms from herders and killed 81 persons.

The survivor, who said he called for help from neighbouring village to bury 31 of the 81 victims of the attack in a mass grave, told the governor that apart from the 81 persons left dead, 13 were injured, while seven others were abducted in the Tuesday’s attack.

He said, “The insurgents disguised as if they had come to enlighten the community, disarmed the herders and shot all of them, including the underaged, and even their animals. They abducted seven people.”

Zulum, who was annoyed, urged the military to begin a final onslaught that should put an end to the insurgents in the shore of the Lake Chad.

Meanwhile, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), described the attack as shocking.

A statement by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, described the killings as one of the most brutal terrorist attacks on innocent people in the North East.

In condemning the incident, Buhari charged the Armed Forces to sustain their “recent string of successes against the terrorists to extract a heavy price from the attackers, and bring back all those they kidnapped as well as the large number of cattle rustled.”

Sanwo-Olu asks court to strike out suit against new Oniru

Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Governor has asked Igbosere High Court in Lagos to strike out a suit challenging the installation of Hakeem Ajasa as the Oniru of Iruland.

The suit is seeking a perpetual injunction, restraining Ajasa from parading himself as Oba Oniru of Lagos.

The suit is also seeking to stop Ajasa from performing traditional ceremonies or rites, pertaining to the installation of Oba Oniru of Lagos until a new selection is made in the appropriate customary manner or in accordance with Section 9(1) of the Obas and Chiefs of Lagos State Law, 1981.

Alhaja Afusatu Kabiawu, Alhaji Surajudeen Durosimi and Alhaja Wosilatu Fatosha are the plaintiffs in the suit.

Ajasa is the third defendant in the suit in which the governor of Lagos State and the state’s Attorney-General (AG) are also joined.

The plaintiffs were, however, urging the court to declare that it was the turn of the Abisogun Ruling House to nominate a candidate to fill the Oniru stool, following the demise of Oba Idowu Abiodun.

They contended that Ajasa’s nomination was invalid as he “is not a member of the Abisogun Ruling House and is not in any way related to Abisogun by blood.”

Meanwhile, Sanwo-Olu and the State’s Attorney-General, Mr  Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), had filed a preliminary objection, asking the court to strike out the suit for being incompetent.

No date has been fixed yet for hearing.

Lagos mechanic burnt in gas explosion, NOHIL detains corpse

An automobile mechanic, Adeboye Adenitan, has died from the injuries he sustained from a gas explosion at his place of residence in the Gberigbe area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Punch Metro gathered that Adeboye got home from work and decided to cook dinner, but when he went inside his room to get something, he became tired and slept off.

It was learnt that the father of two later woke up around midnight to continue the cooking but when he made an attempt to light the gas burner, the whole kitchen was engulfed in flames.

Adeboye’s mother, Bose, said her son suffered severe burns on his head, face, arms and laps, adding that neighbours rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The grieving mother added that Adeboye was later referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, where he died, adding that efforts to recover his corpse from the facility for burial had proved abortive.

She stated, “When my son got home around 10pm, he made to cook dinner on the gas cooker, but went into his room to pick something and slept off. He forgot to turn off the gas cylinder and when he woke up around midnight, he went to the kitchen to cook, forgetting that the cylinder had been left on for a while.

“As he attempted to light the burner, the whole kitchen exploded. He suffered burns on his laps, head, face and arms; only his chest was spared. When he was explaining how the incident happened on his sickbed, I told him that if he was observant, he would have perceived the odour of gas before attempting to light the burner.

“After the explosion, he was rushed to a nearby hospital in Gberigbe, Ikorodu, from where he was referred to the NOHIL, where he died on April 7, 2020. My son’s corpse has not been released since then because the hospital management asked us to pay the outstanding bill, but I am pleading with them to release his corpse on compassionate grounds, because we have spent all we have on his treatment and we no longer have money.”

The deceased’s brother, Oluwatobiloba, while appealing to the hospital management to show compassion, said the family had no means to raise the outstanding N1.5m, adding that his brother died despite the family spending a lot of money to keep him alive.

The 27-year-old Oluwatobiloba stated, “We are pleading with the management to release his corpse to us on compassionate grounds as we have no money. When he died, they calculated the bill and deducted the amount we had spent and told us that we had an outstanding of N1.5m to settle before his corpse could be released. I have written two letters pleading with the hospital management to release my brother’s corpse that has been in their custody for two months.

“We were told to get a police report, but when I went to the Onipanu Police Station for the report, the Deputy Crime Officer told me to pay N20,000 for it. He told me that the family didn’t report the incident and that the money would make him to write a report that the station was aware of the case.

“The secretary of the hospital also told us to come with some money alongside the report. We don’t know where to get money from because we have spent all we have on his treatment.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the hospital, Ayo Adenike, said, “From our records, they made an initial deposit of N500,000, out of which our medical social services assisted them in raising the sum of N400,000; so, they only paid N100,000 into the hospital’s account as a family. They owed the hospital the sum of N1,577,945.”

When asked if the outstanding payment was the reason why the hospital refused to release the corpse despite the family’s plea, Adenike said, “It is because they still owe.”

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Wednesday killed Kogi-based businessman, Nicholas Ofodile on the ever-busy Lokoja – Abuja highway.

Also killed was a taxi-driver as the bandits laid ambush on the road. Several persons were also abducted.

Ofodile was the proprietor of the popular Chuks Supermarket in Lokoja.

He was driving towards Abuja in his Lexus car with the plate number Kogi LKJ 658 PU.

He was reportedly shot dead by the suspected kidnappers between Aseni -Etegi communities near Gegu town.

Mum jailed after her 9 year-old son mauled to death by dog while she took cocaine

A mother whose nine-year-old boy was killed by a dog while she partied with its owner in a nearby caravan has been jailed for two years.

Frankie Macritchie was mauled to death by Sadie Totterdell’s 45kg American bulldog Staffordshire cross in April last year at Tencreek Holiday Park in Looe, Cornwall.

He had been left alone with the dog, named Winston, while his mum Tawney Willis took cocaine, drank and listened to music with the owner and other friends in a nearby mobile home.

Truro Crown Court heard how Frankie died from a loss of blood after sustaining 54 injuries, the most serious of which were to his head and neck. Willis returned to to check in on Frankie at 4.30am and was overheard crying ‘My baby, my baby’ after finding him dead and covered in blood.

Willis, 31, admitted a charge of child neglect, and was handed a two year sentence. Judge Carr described the mother’s decision to leave her child in a confined space with the animal as ‘grossly negligent’.

He added: ‘The scene you found I know will haunt you for the rest of your life and you have developed PTSD as a result of what you saw and experienced.’ Totterdell, 29, also from Plymouth, admitted owning a dog dangerously out of control and was jailed for three years.

Judge Carr added: ‘Winston was an extremely powerful and – as you can see from what happened – potentially dangerous dog. Yet a decision was taken to leave Winston and Frankie in that caravan alone.

‘I accept entirely that for the majority of his life, Winston had been a docile, happy, well-cared for dog but his size and strength must have been obvious to everybody.’

He said previous incidents including when Winston bit a young child, leaving them in need of medical treatment, should have been a ‘red flag’.

Totterdell was also banned from owning or having responsibility over a dog for 10 years. In a statement, the victim’s family said: ‘Frankie was a special young boy. He was funny, caring and kind – his smile would melt your heart.

‘He was always joking around and he loved everyone. Frankie was just becoming a little lad, growing fast, and in a blink of an eye he was gone.

‘The impact of our boy’s passing on us is huge. We are truly heartbroken.’ ‘We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the help love support and kindness over the last 14 months. The love and compassion for our boy Frankie has been unbelievably beautiful.’

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday said  Operation Amotekun would become operational in one month’s time.

Makinde stated this in his address at the first anniversary of the Oyo State House of Assembly at Agodi, Ibadan.

The governor said, “We are constituting the Amotekun Corps which, as you are aware, will complement the efforts of the federal security in securing our state. Within the next one month, they will be fully operational.

“Once the House of Assembly approves the choice of the commandant and chairman, it will be operational.”

On the incessant rape cases in the state, Makinde said the government would strengthen the legislation to address it.

He stated that he had sent an executive bill to the House, adding that the bill would soon be transmitted by the House.

He said, “I commend the moves by this legislature to review the laws on rape and sexual assault. We all know that one of the best ways to address any type of crime is to strengthen the legislation around it.

“On our part, we will do well to enforce the laws as requested by the judiciary. All the arms of government must continue to show zero tolerance for sexual violence. Only in this way would we honour those who have been victims of the heinous crimes and ensure that the rest of the people are protected.”
