COVID-19: Infected mothers can breastfeed – WHO

New mothers infected with COVID-19 should generally continue breastfeeding and should not be separated from their babies, the World Health Organization said on Friday, stressing that the benefits outweighed the risks.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference that the UN health agency had thoroughly investigated the risks of women transmitting the new coronavirus to their babies when breastfeeding.

“We know that children are at relatively low-risk of COVID-19, but are at high risk of numerous other diseases and conditions that breastfeeding prevents,” he said.

“Based on the available evidence, WHO’s advice is that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any potential risks of transmission of COVID-19,” he added.

Anshu Banerjee, the WHO’s senior advisor for reproductive health and research, told the briefing that, so far, the live virus that causes COVID-19 had not been found in breast milk.

“Mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be encouraged to initiate and continue breastfeeding and not be separated from their infants unless the mother is too unwell,” Tedros said.

Ronaldo misses penalty as Juventus reach Coppa Italia final

Juventus reached the Italian Cup final on Friday after a goalless draw with 10-man AC Milan in the semi-final, the second leg in Turin on the day football returned to Italy after three months away.

Serie A champions Juve advanced on away goals to Wednesday’s final in Rome thanks to February’s 1-1 first-leg draw at the San Siro, despite an under-par display against a Milan side who played 74 minutes with a man less and which featured a missed Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.

At the capital’s Stadio Olimpico, Maurizio Sarri’s side will face either Napoli or Inter Milan, the last side Juve faced before football entered into its coronavirus-enforced hiatus in March.

Napoli take on Antonio Conte’s Inter at Naples’ Stadio San Paolo on Saturday with a 1-0 lead from the first leg, in another match set for an eery atmosphere without supporters.

“It was odd and difficult at the start, playing in an empty stadium after 90 days away,” said Leonardo Bonucci to public broadcaster RAI 1.

“We’ve shaken off a dark moment for the whole world. I hope being back will offer the fans at home a bit of hope and joy. We want to give them something more on Wednesday.”

A feisty start belied the two teams’ long absence from the pitch, with Juve — missing the likes of Giorgio Chiellini and Gonzalo Higuain — roaring out of the blocks and Milan putting in some questionable challenges to try to stop themselves from being overrun.

Juve should have been ahead in with just 15 minutes on the clock when Andrea Conti clipped the ball in the penalty area with his elbow and conceded a penalty after a VAR check.

Ronaldo hit the woodwork with the resulting spot-kick, but while that should have been a reprieve for the away side, they found themselves a man down seconds later when Ante Rebic kicked Daniloin the head.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic out injured and Samu Castillejo suspended, Stefano Pioli’s side were missing some firepower going forward, but managed to create problems for Juve despite spending most of the match on the back foot.

Hakan Calhanoglu had Milan’s best chance two minutes after the restart, flashing a free header wide, while Simon Kjaer should have done better with another header 10 minutes from the end.

However, Juve also had their chances, with Milan stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma doing well to keep out Blaise Matuidi’s thumping close-range effort on the half-hour mark, and two great efforts from Paulo Dybala and Alex Sandro late in the second half.

– Virus dead tribute -The match was played on the day Italy would have kicked off Euro 2020 in Rome had the tournament not been postponed for a year.

More than 34,000 people on the peninsula have died because of the coronavirus with the vast majority in northern regions like Piedmont and Lombardy which host Juve and Milan.

Both teams held a minute’s silence before kick-off for those who lost their lives to the virus before breaking out into applause for healthcare workers, three of whom were stood in the centre circle.

Juventus players warmed up before the match in T-shirts with the message “No Racism”, while Milan wore tops on with “Black Lives Matter” written on them, in solidarity with global protests over the death of George Floyd.

The few fans hanging around the Allianz Stadium told AFP that they were happy to see football come back as the country edges towards normality.

However, they were sad that matches had to take place without the passionate support that accompanies most matches in Italy.

“It’s hard for a team not to be able to count on the presence of the cheering fans,” said Massimiliano Balduzzi, 47, from Bergamo, one of the country’s worst-hit areas.

“I believe that there should always be cheering at the stadium. Unfortunately, with what happened, we can only keep on waiting and hope that everything will go well.”

Man finds out his wife is a man two days after wedding

The story of an Indonesian man Muh who “divorced” his wife two days after their wedding after finding out she is a man has gone viral.

It is gathered Muh met his wife Mita on Facebook about a month ago and they began dating online.

The two later met in real life and went out for coffee and an unsuspecting Muh fell in love with Mita whom he described as “beautiful and graceful.”

After weeks of dating, he proposed to her and she accepted immediately.

The 31-year-old then told his family about his plans to marry Mita. His parents visited Mita’s house to deliver the dowry, as is customary. The 20 million rupiah ($1,430) offered by his family was considered a considerable dowry.

The couple married at the Office of Religious Affairs in Kediri District, Indonesia’s Central Java on June 2nd.

Even though the 25-year-old had most of her face covered on the big day, no one thought she looked suspicious, as her face cover was traditional for a bride. Their wedding was attended by religious leaders from around the region, none of which had any suspicions about the bride’s gender.

Muh didn’t suspect a thing when he was turned down by his bride on their wedding night when he tried to consummate their marriage.

However, his suspicions began to rise when the same thing happened on his next attempt.

After the third night passed without any “action”, Muh started doing some investigation, asking around about his wife, and was shocked to learn that Mita was actually a man.

It remains unclear how Mita found out her deception had been found out by her new husband but when Muh came home to confront her, she had already left.

Enraged, Muh told his family the truth and immediately divorced his “wife”.

Feeling cheated by the person he had thought his soul mate, he also notified the police about Mita’s deception and accused her of being a fraud.

Police quickly found and arrested the 25-year-old, who turned out to be a man named Adi. It’s unclear if he will have to face charges, or what punishment he stands to receive.

Muh and Mita’s marriage broke the record for the shortest union ever recorded in Indonesia’s West Lombok region.

This is not the first time something like this is happening. In January,  there was asimilar case which involved an Ugandan holy man who found out his wife was a man after two weeks of marriage.

Release my aides in your custody – Aisha Buhari tells IGP

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to immediately release her aides.

Mrs. Buhari stated this in a series of tweets on Friday.

The aides were reportedly detained based on the orders of the Chief Security Officer to the President, Idris Kassim.

Sahara Reporters had reported that a top aide to the President, Yusuf Sabiu aka Tunde, who had recently returned from another state, refused to self-isolate but forced his way to the Presidential Villa.

Mrs. Buhari’s aides were said to have forcibly removed him from the Villa but Sabiu, who is one of the most powerful aides to the President, allegedly got the CSO to arrest Aisha’s aides including her ADC, Usman Shugaba.

However, in what seems to be a desperate appeal, the President’s wife tweeted, “That Covid-19 is real and still very much around in our nation is not in doubt. Consequently, I call on all relevant government agencies to enforce the Quarantine Act signed by Mr. President and ensure no one is found violating this law and the NCDC guidelines especially on interstate travel without the necessary exemptions for movement of essentials.

“Anyone who does that should at the very least be made to undergo a-14 day mandatory isolation no matter who the person is, no one should be above the law and the Police command will do well to remember that.

“Finally, I call on the IGP to release my assigned Staff who are still in the custody of the police in order to avoid putting their lives in danger or exposure to Covid-19 while in their custody.”

Edo gov poll: PDP opens door as Obaseki loses APC ticket

Following his disqualification by the All Progressives Congress, there are indications that the embattled Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, may consider running on the platform of another political party to realise his second-term ambition.

The screening committee of the party, headed by Prof Jonathan Ayuba, while presenting the committee’s report to the party’s National Working Committee, said the governor was disqualified from participating in the party’s June 22 primary because of the discrepancies in his names and certificates and for taking the party to court in contravention of the party’s rules.

In the report received by the National Chairman of the party, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, Ayuba noted that Obaseki claimed to have obtained a Higher School Certificate from the Institute of Continuing Education in Benin but that he did not produce the certificate and that the document he produced only attested to his attendance.

He said further that the governor’s National Youth Service Corps certificate reads ‘Obasek Godwin’ and that while this could be an error on the part of NYSC, the governor never took any step “to correct the anomaly.”

Obaseki and two other aspirants, Chris Ogiemwonyi and Mathew Iduoriyekenwen, were disqualified from participating in the party primary ahead of the September 19, 2020 governorship election in the state. Those cleared to take part in the primary were Mr Osaro Obaze, Dr Pius Odubu and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

1,089 Nigerian asylum seekers disappear in Netherlands

About 1,089 Nigerian asylum seekers who arrived in the Netherlands last year and January this year, have disappeared.

According to a group of investigative journalists, many of the Nigerians fell victim to human traffickers who forced them into prostitution or drug trafficking across the European Union.

The European journalism collective said of the 2,461 Nigerians seeking asylum in the Netherlands in 2019, 961 cannot be located.

Another 128 Nigerians who arrived in January of this year also disappeared, according to an investigation by the journalist group Lost in Europe.

Reacting to the investigative group’s findings, Shamir Ceuleers of the Dutch Centre Against Human and Child Trafficking says the results are not surprising because they follow a pattern that has been going on for years.

The non-governmental organization said more has to be done to protect the Nigerian men and women who fall victim to human traffickers in the Netherlands.

“The Dutch police should create a specific West African human trafficking unit, which invests in knowledge and expertise and is well connected to the West African community that we have here in the Netherlands.

“And by using this and creating this expertise, the Dutch police would be well equipped to prosecute these trafficking rings,” it said.

Young people from Nigeria are lured with promises of a better life in Europe.

After arriving in the European Union, often by crossing the Mediterranean Sea by boat, they are forced to work in prostitution or other forms of forced labor.

It is a profitable business for the traffickers, as each person has to pay off a debt up to $50,000.

It is believed that such trafficking is not just a Dutch problem, but that the criminal organizations behind such illegal practices are active across Western Europe.

The Dutch national prosecutor for human trafficking and people smuggling, Warner ten Kate, said more international cooperation is needed to prevent human trafficking.

“Within Europe, it’s essential to work together and to exchange experiences but also exchange data of the missing children and women and men.

“So if they disappear and pop up somewhere in conditions considered human trafficking, they can easily be identified.

“I think that’s really essential, and to give them the protection they need,” he said.

A Europe-wide police investigation on missing Nigerian women in 2006 led to arrests across Europe and Nigeria.

Despite that, the trafficking has not stopped or discouraged Nigerians from migrating.

The International Organization for Migration says the increase has been significant, from 1,500 arrivals of Nigerian women in 2014 to 11,000 in 2016.
The IOM worries that up to 80 percent are potential victims of trafficking.

Flavio Di Giacomo of the IOM warns that data shows it’s not only Nigerians who are being trafficked into Europe from West Africa.

“We have also seen, even last year, an increase of women victims of trafficking, coming from Ivory Coast, which is quite new, and many coming from Tunisia. This is a different kind of exploitation because it’s not only sexual exploitation but also work exploitation and domestic exploitation.

Ivorian girls were exploited to Tunisia, and then re-trafficked in Italy,” he said.

Covid-19: FG to retain passports of travellers to Nigeria

The Federal Government says all persons –whether citizens or foreigners – coming into the country will be required to leave their passports with the Nigeria Immigration Service for two weeks pending the verification of their COVID-19 status.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this in a circular addressed to all diplomatic, consular and international organisations accredited to Nigeria.

In the circular dated June 10, 2020, with reference number BW/20/CIR.LET/III/2020, the government said the only category of persons that would be exempted from this new rule are those who possess a diplomatic passport.

It read in part, “Persons who have arrived in Nigeria are advised to self-isolate for 14 days and to remain in the city/state where the point of entry is located (i.e Lagos or Abuja) throughout the duration of self-quarantine.

“If not resident in Lagos, passengers shall make arrangements for accommodation at their own cost. Please note that the Federal Government will not be responsible for providing accommodation or transportation to the place of abode.

“Passengers will be cleared through the Nigeria Immigration Service System’s Migrant Identification and Data Analysis System and their passports retained until after successful completion of 14 days self-quarantine except diplomatic passport holders.”

It said after all the COVID-19 protocols had been followed, instructions would be given to the NIS to release the passports to their owners.

According to the circular, alternative arrangements could be made to collect passports via special delivery.

The government said persons who are unable to remain in Lagos or Abuja throughout the period of self-quarantine may return to their states of residence only after their samples have been collected and have tested negative for COVID-19.

Such persons must also make their full contact details available.

Trollz: Nicki Minaj & 6ix9ine make history in 9 minutes

Nicki Minaj and 6ix9ine have reportedly broken the record for the fastest number 1 song on the US iTunes.

They made history in just nine minutes with their collaboration titled “TROLLZ.”

This becomes Nicki’s 14th song and 6ix9ine’s 3rd to reach #1 on the chart.

“Trollz” was released on Friday (June 12).

The song was 6ix9ine and Nicki’s follow-up to their first release “Fefe,” which dropped back in 2018 and was later added to her Queen album.

The single was accompanied by a colorful visual, which was shot at 6ix9ine’s house.

Tekashi, in his usual high spirit on the track, said “I know you don’t like me, you wanna fight me/You don’t want no problems at your party? Don’t invite me,” he raps. “I don’t worry ’bout you niggas, please stop talking ’bout me/Always talkin’ bout me ’cause you looking for the clouty.”

Nicki didn’t hold back any punches either.

She said: “Somebody ushered this nigga into a clinic/My flow is still sick, I ain’t talkin’ a pandemic/I write my own lyrics, a lot of these bitches gimmicks/They study Nicki style, now all of them wanna mimic.”

However, Nicki had earlier announced that a portion of the newly released effort will benefit the Bail Project Inc. – an organization that assists low-come individuals with securing bail while they await trial.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the remand of a journalist, Rotimi Jolayemi, also known as Oba Akewi, who was arrested for his Yoruba poetic song critical of the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.

The judge ordered the defendant to be remanded in the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department headquarters, in Abuja, pending the hearing of his bail application.

Former King of Spain is being investigated by Spanish Supreme Court in corruption case

Spanish prosecutors have opened a probe into whether former king Juan Carlos was handed millions of dollars in kickbacks from Saudi Arabia.

The Supreme Court is looking into allegations the king was paid to facilitate the construction by a Spanish consortium of a bullet train between the Saudi cities of Medina and Mecca.

A statement from the general prosecutor's office called the investigation, which will centre on developments after mid-2014, one of 'undeniable technical complexity'.

The probe will cover the second phase of the 2011 contract for the high-speed railway.

June 2014 marks the moment when Juan Carlos, 82, marred by several scandals, passed on the throne to his son, who became King Felipe VI, 52.

By abdicating after nearly four decades on the throne, Juan Carlos lost the protection granted by Spain's constitution to the head of state.

The prosecutor's statement said that given the 'institutional significance', the investigation would be charged to one of the Supreme Court's chief prosecutors and three assistants.

Although Juan Carlos's finances have been questioned in Spanish media for years, there have so far been zero legal implications for the king emeritus.

Spanish legislators have rejected at least two proposals since the first allegations emerged to open parliamentary investigations.

Swiss prosecutors are also investigating an account operated for Juan Carlos to which millions were allegedly transferred by Saudi Arabia's late King Abdullah.

In March, King Felipe VI renounced any future inheritance from his father after the Daily Telegraph reported that the current monarch had been named as beneficiary for some of that money.

Spain's royal house said in a statement that in addition to renouncing his inheritance, Felipe would strip Juan of his annual stipend.

The decision came amid the ongoing investigation by Swiss prosecutors into an offshore account allegedly operated for Juan.

The account reportedly received €88 million (£78 million) from Saudi Arabia's late King Abdullah in 2008 when Juan was on the throne, which prosecutors believes could be kickback payments, according to the Swiss newspaper Tribune de Geneva.

Felipe denied any knowledge of the fund in a statement released in March.

In the palace statement, the reigning king said that in April 2019 he had made it clear to a notary that he would accept no money from the foundation in question.

He also said he had absolutely no knowledge of having been named as a beneficiary to another foundation, which according to press reports paid millions of euros towards his father's flights in private jets.

The statement said King Felipe was renouncing any assets, shares or investments that might be either illegal or compromise the royal family's integrity.

Spanish media reports say Juan has until now received an annual allowance from the state of more than €194,000 ($216,000).

Chelsea will finish ahead of Man U according to supercomputer which has predicted final league table

Manchester United will miss out on the top four this season if predictions made by stats boffins come true.

With the majority of Premier League clubs having nine games left to play there’s still plenty to be decided ahead of the final standings.

While Liverpool are on course for a maiden Premier League title, all eyes will be on who finishes in the top four and who gets relegated.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea currently sit in the fourth Champions League spot but United are just three points behind.

The likes of Wolves, Tottenham, Sheffield United and Arsenal are also in contention for a top-four finish.

But betting firm Sporting Index have drafted up a final Premier League table after examining each team's final results from the past five seasons.

They’ve studied goals scored and points won during that spell in previous years and it makes good reading for Chelsea fans.

The Blues are on course to finish fourth, three points ahead of sixth-placed United, with Sheffield United finishing a remarkable fifth.

Arsenal will take bragging rights over north London rivals Tottenham with Jose Mourinho’s side predicted to have a nervy finish and end up in ninth.

Crystal Palace sneak into the top 10 while a disappointing first season for Carlo Ancelotti sees Everton finish 12th.

Things are still tight at the bottom too with Norwich, Aston Villa and Bournemouth currently occupying the relegation spots.

Watford sit outside the drop on goal difference but the supercomputer’s final table has the Hornets rock bottom of the table.

Sadly for Norwich and Villa fans they’ll also be heading to the Championship while West Ham and Brighton stay up on goal difference.

Lagos Seals 19 Buildings In Banana Island

In furtherance of the ongoing efforts to control physical development and engender livable and sustainable environment in the State, the Lagos State Government, on Thursday, sealed 19 additional buildings in the highbrow Banana Island, Ikoyi.

The figure brings the total number of property sealed in the axis for lack of building Permit and other infractions of the physical planning law to 34 since the commencement of the exercise on Wednesday.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, who led the enforcement exercise, stated that the Government would not sit by and allow people to violate planning laws to the detriment of the wellness and wellbeing of the society through disorderly, unorganised, unapproved and illegal developments.

He emphasised that the State Government would not relent in its effort to enforce compliance with the planning laws of the State in the interest of the sustainable growth and development of Lagos.

Salako decried the encroachment on the right of way and alignment of the proposed Lagoon Highway by some developers and vowed to nip the unhealthy development in the bud.

He also warned owners and developers, who are fond of engaging in contravention of the law, to desist from such illegal practice or face the wrath of the law.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Mr. Ganiyu Adele Ayuba cautioned developers to desist from breaking Government seals on property that had been sealed for infractions as such illicit acts constitute an affront to the authorities and would be met with stiff penalties.

Ayuba also reiterated that the State Government would not tolerate any attack or obstruction of its officials while on lawful assignments.

The special enforcement activity, a joint exercise between the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Lagos State Building Control Agency and the Special Operations Team in the Governor's Office, continues next week.

Governors Declare State Of Emergency On R*pe

The Nigeria Governors Forum has agreed to declare a state of emergency on s*xual and gender-based violence against women and children.

They also renewed commitment to ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law.

This was contained in a communique signed by the Chairman of the NGF, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, after the forum’s 10th COVID-19 teleconference meeting held on Wednesday.

The communique was issued in Abuja, on Thursday.

Governors agreed to, “Declare a State of Emergency on S*xual and Gender- based Violence. Governors strongly condemned all forms of violence against women and children and committed to ensuring that offenders face the maximum weight of the law;

“Call on State Governors that have not already domesticated relevant gender- based protection laws to domesticate the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, the Child Rights Act and the updated Penal Code to increase protection for women and children and ensure speedy investigation and prosecution of perpetrators in addition to creating a s*x offenders register in each State to name and shame.”

We Are Hungry - Private Schools Teachers Cry Amidst Lockdown

Teachers of private schools have appealed to the government to assist them with palliatives, saying the prolonged closure of schools as part of measures to curtail the spread of COVID-19 is subjecting them to starvation.

In a statement signed by their spokesman, Abdul-Ganiyy Raji in Kaduna, the private school teachers said it would be callous of the government to wait for owners and teachers of private schools to start dying of starvation before it comes to their aid.

“We cannot afford to keep ignoring the welfare of private schools teachers. Private school teachers are now hungry.

“We must remember that private schools survive primarily on earnings from their customers (parents) and we all know that schools have not collected third term fees from their customers.

“All the sources of income of private schools have been blocked by the current lockdown. Government should please do something about private schools,” Raji said.

The group noted that for more than two months now, schools have been closed in compliance with the lockdown order imposed by the Federal Government to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

It said: “The government is commended for this bold step; we have to stay at home to be safe and to be alive. Different countries of the world have also taken diverse steps to forestall the further spread of the highly infectious virus.

“However, while this lockdown lasts, is anybody talking about how school owners are coping with the salaries of their workforce at this difficult time? Is anybody discussing how school owners themselves are surviving and helping their family members during this lockdown?

“In Lagos for instance, schools were shut down as far back as March. We are in June. Are we aware that some school owners have not paid March and April salaries?”

Amaechi Loses As Court Declares Igo Aguma Rivers APC Chairman

Rotimi Amaechi, Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, lost out again in the crisis bedevilling the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, as a high court in the state on Tuesday declared Igo Aguma, of a rival faction, the acting chairman of the party in the state.

The APC has barred its members from appealing the judgement.

Mr Aguma belongs to a faction of the APC in Rivers that is loyal to Magnus Abe, a former governorship aspirant in the state.

Mr Amaechi is a former governor of Rivers and one of APC’s most influential leaders, but he has been having it tough getting the APC in Rivers to unite in the party’s quest to wrestle power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the oil-rich state.

The protracted crisis in the party prompted the court to declare that the APC did not have a governorship candidate in Rivers in 2019, paving the way for Governor Nyesom Wike of the PDP to have an easy second term victory.

Mr Aguma, a former member of the House of Representatives and former political ally to Mr Amaechi, parted ways with him over his (Amaechi) insistence that Mr Abe would not be the APC governorship candidate in the 2015 and the 2019 elections.

Mr Aguma filed a lawsuit in December 2019 against the APC, including its national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, for setting up a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party in Rivers.

The setting up of the caretaker committee contravened the APC rules, Mr Aguma had told the court.

The court presided by Justice George Omereji declared that Mr Aguma suffered injustice and his civil rights violated when the APC set up the caretaker committee.

The APC in its reaction to the development has barred its members from appealing the court judgment.

The APC National Vice Chairman, South-South, Hilliard Etah, said in a statement on Wednesday, “This is to categorically state that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has not delegated any authority to anyone, group of persons, agents or whatsoever to appeal the said judgement”.

Mr Etah said the APC was yet to take a decision whether to appeal the judgment or not.

Mr Abe said of the court judgment, “The only thing wrong with the judgment is that it failed to massage the ego of any individual.”

He advised Mr Aguma not to harbour personal or hidden agenda, but to “reach out to all persons of consequence in the party who are desirous of repositioning the party”. He said he should have the courage to move on if people do not want to join him to rebuild the APC in the state. “None of us can be bigger than the party,” he said.

The recent appointment of Mr Abe into the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation by President Muhamadu Buhari has also unsettled the APC faction loyal to Mr Amaechi.

It is unclear, for now, if there is a hidden plan by some powerful people within the APC to push Mr Amaechi aside and rebuild the party in Rivers around Mr Abe ahead of the 2023 general elections.
