Oshiomhole: What Will Happen In Edo With The Exit Of Obaseki

A last-minute meeting summoned to discuss the fate of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has failed to save the embattled chief executive as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday said that it would go ahead with June 22, 2020 governorship primary election.

The APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, fielded questions from State House reporters after a meeting with the Chief of Staff (CoS) to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.

The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, as well as four members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC), including the National Vice Chairman (North West), Barr. Inuwa Abdulkadir; National Treasurer, Adamu Panda; National Welfare Officer, Ibrahim Masari; and National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu.

Bagudu, who represented the APC governors at the meeting, did not wait while Oshiomhole was speaking with journalists after the meeting.

The meeting was believed to have discussed the fallout of the disqualification of the incumbent Governor Obaseki from participating in the state governorship primary election.

Oshiomhole, who said the APC had followed all necessary guidelines and standard practice required ahead of the primary, expressed optimism that the process would be “free, fair, and transparent” and produce a candidate that would unify the party.

COVID-19: Not yet safe to reopen school ― FG

The Federal Government Monday warned states considering reopening of schools to jettison such plan, says the current situation of COVID-19 did not in any way support such initiative.

Speaking during a daily briefing in Abuja, Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha said that the reopening of schools at this critical time amounts to exposing the general public to more danger.

“We get report that some states are considering reopening of schools, viewing centres and other gatherings that encourage large crown, such step is not encouraging at this moment. PTF is emphasising that it’s not yet safe to do so. We need to be cautious and adhere to the PTF guideline.

Mustapha regretted that the COVID-19 battle is no longer in the hand of health workers but rather in the hand of the general public, “before, health workers were our front line but that is no longer so, the war has shifted to the community, our health works are now our last line of defence.

Oyo reviews curfew, mosques, churches to operate at 25 per cent capacity

The Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force announced on Monday that it has relaxed the curfew imposed on the state following the advent of the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.

The Task Force, which made the decision public after a two-and-a-half-hour meeting presided by its chairman, Governor Seyi Makinde, added that the curfew would now run from 10 pm to 4 am.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Mr Taiwo Adisa, confirmed that other decisions reached include the resumption of classes for Primary Six, JSS3 and SS3 students from Monday, June 29; resumption of work by all category of workers at the state secretariat from June 22; opening up of mosques and churches, which are to operate at 25 per cent capacity; and the decision to limit public gathering to not more than 25 persons.

The statement indicated that the state secretariat, which was earlier shut on March 27 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and later reopened to staff on grade level 13 and above from Monday, April 27, would now be open to all other staffers from Monday, June 22.

According to the statement, students in critical classes are to resume at the end of June to ensure they are well-prepared for the public examinations ahead of them.

The statement read: “The schools are to observe the COVID-19 protocols as released by the Task Force, ensure that stations for washing of hands are provided in all schools, while all students are to compulsorily wear face masks. “Schools are to provide hand wash points with the support of their Parents/Teachers Associations (PTA).

“The resumption of critical classes at the end of June 2020, would be two clear weeks ahead of the state’s drop-dead date of July 15. By that date, it would be decided whether other categories of students will return to the classes.” The statement further read: “Mosques and Churches are to reopen and operate at not more than 25 per cent capacity.

The situation will be reviewed within the first two weeks. All worshippers are to compulsorily wear face masks. “Night clubs are to remain shut even though the existing curfew, which used to run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. is being aligned with that of the Federal Government, which runs from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

“The Task Force will not mind shutting down everywhere if evidence emerges that the COVID-19 safety protocols are being violated, or should there be an explosion in the number of cases; however, the state government will intensify enlightenment campaigns to ensure the safety of our people.”

The statement also added that the resumption order will not affect the tertiary institutions for now, as the Task Force would review their situation and determine their state of readiness.

Woman dies of COVID-19 after delivering twins in Imo

Imo State has recorded another death resulting from COVID-19 complications.

Although the woman’s details are unknown, the deceased was said to have been receiving treatment in the isolation centre after testing positive for the coronavirus disease a few days ago.

Confirming the incident to Channels Television, the Chairman of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, Professor Maurice Iwu, said the woman was delivered of a set of twins but after delivery, she couldn’t survive it.

According to Professor Iwu, the babies were however fortunate as to have tested negative for the virus.

While warning the people to disregard rumours that COVID-19 is not real, he asked indigenes of the state to continue to comply with precautionary measures put in place by the state government to contain the spread of the virus.

Iwu also noted that COVID-19 cases keep increasing by the day due to an increase in sample testing in the state.

Woman who is unable to have children killed her friend in order to steal her babies

The drinks were flowing and guest of honour Samantha Kelly didn’t have to lift a finger.

As soon as her glass was empty, it was whisked away and returned full. She was being thoroughly spoilt by her neighbours.

Samantha, 39, rented a bungalow in the backyard of a home in the suburb of Kangaroo Flat, in Bendigo, Australia, that belonged to Christine Lyons. Christine, 47, invited Samantha for drinks with Christine’s boyfriend Peter Arthur and their housemate Ronald Lyons, 45.

Ronald and Christine had once been related through marriage – and they’d also dated at one point in the past. But now Christine was with Peter and the unlikely trio lived happily together.

It was January 2016 and as Samantha chatted away, drinking from her glass, she felt strangely groggy. Looking around, Samantha felt confused and wary, a feeling that had become increasingly familiar to her over the previous months.

She couldn’t quite put her finger on what was going on lately, but she knew for certain that something wasn’t right…

Single mum Samantha had moved from Ballarat to Bendigo to start a new life with her four children. She’d had problems with an ex who had been found guilty of assaulting her and she wanted a fresh start.

Samantha, who had some learning difficulties, was easily led and considered vulnerable to some, but she was a kind and loving mum to her kids, aged 11 months, four, five and six. Samantha thought she had found a sanctuary with Christine, who had been generous with her welcome.

Christine was unable to have children of her own and seemingly doted on Samantha’s offspring. The truth was Christine was desperate to have kids. She had approached around 10 people asking them if they would have a baby for her.

When trusting Samantha turned up, she saw an opportunity to get the family she desperately wanted. If Samantha were gone, there would be four children who would need a new mum – and Christine was more than happy to step in.

Christine told Peter and Ronald that her friend Samantha ‘had to go’. They hatched a plan to kill Samantha so that Christine could take her children.

In January 2016, they invited Samantha over, crushed up drugs and mixed them into her drinks. It was a cocktail of around seven medications, including sedatives, beta-blockers and antihistamines. Some had been prescribed to Christine in the past.

Samantha started to feel the effects of the medications, but the combination wasn’t enough to make her fatally ill. Christine grew frustrated and Samantha grew suspicious.

Samantha told her brother over the phone that perhaps it was time she moved on. She said that the trio were ‘starting to take over’. Christine had the children in her house more and more – while Samantha felt she was losing control.

Impatient Christine told Peter and Ronald that Samantha had to go on a ‘permanent holiday’ and their plan stepped up a gear. On the night of January 22, or in the early hours of January 23, Peter attacked Samantha and hit her around the head seven times with a hammer. Samantha didn’t stand a chance and the blows were fatal.

Ronald bought two shovels from a hardware store and helped Peter bury Samantha in a dry creek in bushland south-west of Bendigo. Then the three told everyone that Samantha had ‘run off’ with a man in the middle of the night and had left her kids because she didn’t want them.

They said she had started using drugs and had become violent towards her kids. They were terrible lies to discredit her and cover the crime.

The last sighting of Samantha was on January 20 when she was captured on CCTV using a cash point machine. Her disappearance was investigated.

Friends, family and even the police didn’t believe that Samantha had left of her own accord. Police put pressure on the three and it was Christine’s boyfriend Peter who would crack after just a few weeks.

At first, Peter admitted he had killed Christine and insisted that he’d acted alone. He said that Samantha had lashed out at him and he’d acted in self-defence. He even took officers to where Samantha’s body was buried.

But after being charged, he admitted that although he’d been the one who had beaten Samantha to death, Christine and Ronald were all part of the sickening plot.

Peter told them all about the drugs they had spiked Samantha’s drinks with, how Ronald had helped with the plan and that Christine had been the mastermind because of her obsession to become a mum.

By now, Christine had changed the names of two of Samantha’s children to the favourite names she’d picked out for her future children – and had enrolled them into a new school.

Samantha had family who would eventually take the children in and they were heartbroken that although the youngest were too young to know any different, the eldest reacted strongly to their original names being used.

In 2017, as part of a plea deal, Peter Arthur pleaded guilty to murder and received 16 years in prison, with a parole period of just 13 years. The judge called the crime ‘vicious, calculated and planned’.

He said that while Christine had been the architect of the crime, Peter had made a ‘conscious and selfish choice’ to go ahead with the murder because of his ‘foolish and pathetic devotion’ to her. After an appeal by the prosecution, who were unhappy at his vastly discounted sentence, Peter’s sentence was later increased to 22 years with a parole period of 18 years.

Christine and Ronald went to trial in 2018 and both denied their part in the killing. Peter was the key witness as part of his plea deal and implicated them in the murder.

The prosecution said that the motive was clearly down to Christine. ‘Christine Lyons was unable to bear children herself and she was desperate for children of her own,’ the prosecutor said. ‘She wanted to raise Samantha’s children as her own children.’

The court heard about the plan to drug Samantha and showed evidence that Christine went to her GP to get prescription drugs that she would go on to use. There were text messages between the three accused as well, and everyone knew about Christine’s obsession with having a family.

Peter had no reason to kill Samantha. Ronald had been part of the drugging and disposing of the body. He had known what was going on and did nothing to stop it.

But the defence said that Peter had been the one who had hammered Samantha to death and had acted alone. They said that Peter’s story had inconsistencies and he’d only blamed Christine and Ronald once he was on remand, simply to get a reduced sentence. The jury disagreed.

Christine was found guilty of murder and attempted murder. Ronald was found guilty of attempted murder and assisting an offender but not guilty of murder.

At the sentencing, Christine’s lawyer claimed that her below-average intelligence and difficult upbringing should be taken into account. But Samantha’s mum Vivienne gave a statement to remind the court just how horrific the crime was.

‘You have stolen the life of my beautiful daughter,’ she said. ‘I will never forgive you for what you’ve done to my family… I hope Sama

The judge said that Christine was the architect and was ‘involved in the administration of each stage’. He described the killing of the ‘loving, caring and devoted mother’ as ‘heartless and thoroughly evil’, adding, ’Samantha was vulnerable and, for all intents and purposes, defenceless. You sought to rob an innocent woman of her children so you could take them as your own.’

Christine was sentenced to serve 30 years with the chance of parole at 23 years. Ronald was sentenced to 12 years and six months. He will serve a minimum of nine years.

Outside court, Samantha’s brother Michael, who had taken in his sister’s four children, called the sentences ‘ludicrous’. ‘Knowing one of them will be out before the youngest baby actually turns 10 is very gut-wrenching,’ he said. ‘Definitely I think it should have been life behind bars.’

In March this year, Christine and Ronald Lyons both appealed their sentences. Christine claimed she was falsely implicated in the murder. The appeal suggested that Peter Arthur had acted alone, and lawyers said that the conviction was ‘unsafe and unsatisfactory’ simply based on Peter’s evidence and nothing else.

‘Peter Arthur had a strong self-interest in falsely implicating Christine Lyons in the murder of Samantha Kelly,’ the appeal court heard from her lawyer. ‘He altered his version of events in order to assist himself in order to secure a more beneficial sentencing outcome.’

But the court was reminded of the only motive. Christine wanted to be a mum, and nothing was going to stop her. The power she held over her boyfriend and ex-lover was clear. They’d helped her murder. The appeals were rejected.

Samantha’s murder remains one of Australia’s most shocking cases. She was looking for a safe place to raise her family. But Christine knew what a blessing it was to be a mum and her jealousy led to the darkest of plots.

Meghan Markle's mum moves in with Meghan and Harry to become 'unofficial nanny'

Meghan Markle has "moved mum Doria Ragland into the £8 million LA mansion" she rents with husband Prince Harry.

The social worker has become an unofficial nanny to her grandson Archie, one, and will continue to help Meghan, 38, and Harry, 35, if they extend their brood, a source said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are thought to be looking to buy the eight-bedroom home - in the famous 90210 postcode of Beverley Hills - which helpfully has its own 'granny annexe' for Doria.

A source said: “Doria has her own quarters and whilst a few of Harry’s chums have been ribbing him about living with his mother-in-law, he has a brilliant relationship with her.

Another source told the Mail Meghan sees her mum, 63, as "her rock".

They said Meghan wants to keep her close as she "doesn't trust many people" outside of her close friends and family.

Doria was already living in LA. She owns a home in View Park, Windsor Hills, described as "one of LA's hidden gems" on property websites.

She previously stayed with the couple at Frogmore Cottage, Windsor, moving in just ahead of Archie's birth.

One person r.a.p.e.d, three stabbed, one dead at illegal quarantine party in UK

Cops ended two illegal raves over the weekend where they claim a woman was r-ped, three people were stabbed and a man died of a drug overdose.

The raves took place in Droylsden and Carrington in Greater Manchester – near the Manchester United training ground – despite coronavirus guidelines banning large gatherings.

Greater Manchester Police said they received a 60% increase in 999 calls.

In Droylsden, there were approximately 4,000 people in attendance, and a 20-year-old man died from a suspected drug overdose.

Around 2,000 partygoers descended on the event in Carrington, and there were three separate recorded stabbings – leaving one 18-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes said: “Two other men – aged 25 and 26 – were also left with injuries after these separate assaults.

"A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and enquiries remain ongoing to locate the suspects involved in these incidents.

“We are also investigating the rape of an 18-year-old woman who attended this event and we have specialist officers supporting her and her family whilst enquiries are ongoing to trace the suspect.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police as soon as possible.

“Sadly, officers attempting to engage with participants of this gathering were met with violence, resulting in items being thrown and a police car being vandalised.

"I want to make it clear that this is absolutely not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

"Our officers are working incredibly hard to keep people safe and should never be met with inexcusable violence whilst carrying out their duties.”

Fears of a second wave as China reports largest coronavirus surge since

China has reported its highest daily surge of new coronavirus cases since April after a food market in Beijing was closed due to a rise in local infections.

The National Health Commission confirmed there were 57 new infections in the country on Saturday, including 36 in the capital.

The new cases have sparked concerns of a second wave of Covid-19, which has infected more than seven million people worldwide and killed 432,638.

China had relaxed most of its lockdown measures after the ruling Communist Party declared victory over the disease in March.

A Beijing district is now put under lockdown after new infections were identified around a major wholesale food market.

Forty-five people out of 517 tested with throat swabs at the Xinfadi market in the city’s southwestern Fengtai district had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Chu Junwei, a district official, said none of the people who tested positive for the virus were showing symptoms of Covid-19.

The official added that 11 neighbourhoods near the market were locked down with 24-hour guards put in place.

Chu said: "In accordance with the principle of putting the safety of the masses and health first, we have adopted lockdown measures for the Xinfadi market and surrounding neighbourhoods."

He added the district is in a “wartime emergency mode" and tourism has been banned in the Chinese capital.

The entire Xinfadi market was shut down at 3am on Saturday after two men working at a meat research centre who had recently visited the market were reported to have the virus.

The city government also said it had dropped plans to reopen schools on Monday to young pupils because of the new cases.

The market has 4,000 tenants and will be disinfected, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Beijing authorities had earlier halted beef and mutton trading at the market and had closed other wholesale markets around the city.

3-month old baby r.a.p.e.d by unknown man in Nasarawa

A 3-month-old baby has been defiled in Adogi village of Nasarawa State, according to Daily Trust.

The victim is currently receiving surgical treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) as a result of the incident.

Maimuna Adam, mother of the victim told the news medium in Jos that the incident occurred in the midnight of May 27, when the family was asleep and the door to their room was left open due to heat being experienced in the area.

“The incident occurred on Wednesday 27 of last month when suddenly I woke up around 3am and found that my baby was missing. I checked my phone which was also close to me before I slept, but it was also missing,” the mother narrated.

Maimuna said soon after she realised that something was wrong with her infant daughter, she began to shout and people in the compound and others woke up to come to the aid of the family.

She explained that when both men and women of the village trooped into their compound, they went out in search of the baby on foot and motorcycles, and ultimately the child was found in an uncompleted building bleeding.

“She was found lying in the building with her pant kept aside. Everywhere across her private part was blood and then we rushed her to the hospital, “ she added.

She however called on security and other stakeholders in Nasarawa State to ensure the arrest of the culprit to ensure that justice is done. The mother said a day after the incident, a family member had reported the case to a police station in Adogi for prompt action but there was no any response so far.

Flight Resumption In Nigeria: New Guidelines For Passengers

Anytime from June 21, flight operations within Nigeria could resume. Ahead of the resumption of commercial flights, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said passengers must arrive at airports at least three hours before flight time.

The Authority made this known on Monday as part of the new protocol for the restart of flights amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Announcing via Twitter, it said the early arrival by travellers would enable efficient checks and screening before boarding.

“COVID-19 Flight Resumption Protocol for Passengers: You are advised to arrive at the airport three hours before your flight due to the new COVID-19 safety checks,” it wrote.

FAAN also urged travellers to maintain two metres distance from each other at the airports while noting that persons not wearing their face masks will not be allowed into airports’ premises.

The Federal Government had said civil aviation authorities will determine the resumption of domestic flightsin the country.

The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu, stated this during a briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Aliyu had on June 1 said that “the aviation industry is requested to start developing protocols to allow for domestic flights to resume anytime from the 21st of June onwards.”

However, while giving an update on Thursday, he said the PTF was yet to receive any update from the aviation sector on its preparedness to restart commercial flight operations.

Recall that Nigeria’s airports and airspace were shut in March by President Muhammadu Buhari as part of efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

The President’s directive however allowed the operation of essential flights including those for medical and evacuation purposes, amongst others.

COVID19 Spike Looms As Many Nigerians Ignore Safety Protocols

Health is wealth. Medical experts have warned that Nigeria could experience dire consequences in the rate of COVID-19 cases and deaths if people continued to violate protective measures against the disease.

They said it was worrisome that many people violated wearing of face masks, physical and social distancing, and hygiene measures such as hand washing and use of hand sanitisers among others across the country.

Dr. Ejike Orji, Chairman, Medical Sub-Committee, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministerial Expert Advisory Committee on COVID-19 said that there would be a spike in cases, and that the country would be in serious trouble if the violation continued. He said, “It is already happening. Abuja has been recording an average of 42 cases per day in the last two weeks.

“The isolation centres at the National Hospital, Abuja, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada and Asokoro District Hospitals are filled up. “If we continue this way, we are going to be in serious trouble.” He said a lot of people in Nigeria were asymptomatic to the disease because its population was largely youthful.

“70 % of our population is under the age of 30, that is also what is helping us. “The disease is serious in people who are older and have co-morbidities like diabetes and hypertension.

“So young people can have it and feel nothing is wrong with them but be endangering their parents and older people around them.” Dr. Omo Izedomwen, a public health expert said the country was already experiencing community transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic and that the only way to break it currently was to adhere to safety measures and restrictions instituted by the government .

Izedomwen, who is also the Coordinator of the Abuja Centre of the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) warned that disregarding the public safety measures comes with a cost, which people could regret later, adding “We can make choices but unfortunately cannot decide the consequences of these choices. And the consequences are very dire.”

He said the United States of America for instance had recorded over 100, 000 deaths already, saying these were people who once laughed and spent time with their loved ones.

Dr. Audu Onyemocho, an epidemiologist and an associate Professor of Community Medicine said the poor level of compliance by the public does not augur well for curbing the spread of the disease.

“The public should note that everyone is susceptible to COVID-19. “It doesn’t show on the face, so the only way is to protect yourself and people around you,” he said.

As of yesterday, Nigeria had recorded 15, 682 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of the number, 5, 101 cases have been discharged and 407 deaths recorded.

Findings by Daily Trust revealed that doubts about the existence of COVID-19 was still widespread among Nigerians in spite of the increasing number of cases. This is happening three months after the country recorded its first case of the disease.

It was gathered that some of those who initially believed in the outbreak of the disease have grown complacent and abandoned hygiene measures to protect themselves.

Dangote, Police Restrained From Interfering With BUA Cement Mining Sites

A Federal High Court in Benin City has restrained Dangote Industries and the Nigerian Police Force from interfering with BUA Group’s operations of the disputed Okpella mining sites in Okpella, Edo State in a judgement it delivered recently.

A statement by the management of the company on Sunday recalled that BUA was legally operating on its mining sites before operations at three of those mines were abruptly disrupted by the Inspector General of Police and the Edo state Commissioner of Police on the order of Dangote Industries & Dangote Cement Plc in 2017.

According to the statement, the court ordered the Inspector General of Police as 1st Respondent, Commissioner of Police, Edo State as 2nd Respondent, Dangote Industries, 3rd Respondent and Dangote Cement Plc as 4th Respondent to steer clear of the mining sites or interfering in any manner whatsoever with BUA's operation of disputed mining lease sites.

The statement reads: “BUA wishes to inform its shareholders, employees, customers, regulators, host communities, security agencies and the general public that the Federal High Court, Benin, in a recent judgement, has made an order which upholds BUA’s fundamental right to peaceful possession of the mining sites in Obu, Okpella, Edo State (operated by BUA Cement and which BUA became seised by virtue of mining leases granted by the Federal Government of Nigeria), without unlawful interference from the Inspector General of Police, 1st Respondent; Commissioner of Police, Edo State, 2nd Respondent; Dangote Industries, 3rd Respondent; and Dangote Cement Plc, 4th Respondent.

“It would be recalled that BUA was legally operating its various mining sites in Obu-Okpella, Edo State before the above named respondents abruptly disrupted our operations at three of those mines in 2017 during the pendency of two other matters. The 1st and 2nd Respondents at the behest of the 3rd and 4th Respondents invaded and shut down the operations.

We then approached the courts to enforce our fundamental rights to the property of the mines as well as our rights to continue operating from those mines. Whilst we were awaiting judgement, we continued to sustain our operations from our other numerous mines in that area unaffected by these actions."

The statement further explained that: “After a prolonged trial, which commenced in 2017, the court not only found that we have always been in possession of the mining sites but clearly found that the 1st and 2nd respondents were used and allowed themselves to be used by the 3rd and 4th respondents to invade, and disrupt our operations in the affected and disputed mine sites during the pendency of two other matters between us and the 3rd and 4th respondents.

"The court accordingly granted an order restraining the first 1st and 2nd respondents (The Police) as well as the 3rd and 4th respondents (Dangote Industries & Dangote Cement Plc) from interfering in any manner whatsoever with BUA's operation of disputed mining lease sites. The two other matters remain pending in court.

“This judgement is one major step towards the final vindication of our rights over the mining sites and in line with BUA's position that it holds the legal mining leases to the disputed sites, and that all parties in this dispute allow the courts be the final arbiter as has been our mantra, “LET THE COURTS DECIDE”.

“We, therefore, wish to thank the Judiciary for standing firm on the side of justice in the discharge of its duties as well as the commitment of all parties in submitting wholeheartedly to the judicial process.

“BUA has now resumed operations at the Obu-Okpella mines as ordered by the court," it concluded.

Shooting In Aso Rock: Aisha’s ADC, Escort Commander To Face Panel

The shooting at the Presidential Villa involving Usman Shugaba , the Aide-de -Camp to the First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, and other security agents attached to her will top the agenda of the police management team meeting today (Monday).

The First Lady’s security aides would face a panel that would be set up by the leadership of the police.

It was also learnt the affected security aides would not be restored to the wife of the President following their involvement in an altercation with a personal assistant and nephew of the President, Sabiu Yusuf, also known as Tunde, last Thursday, at the Presidential Villa.

The trouble started on Thursday night, when the President’s wife and three of her children – Zahra, Halima and Yusuf – as well as some of her security aides, led by Shugaba, stormed the residence of Yusuf at House 8 by the Pilot Gate of the Presidential Villa.

They insisted that Yusuf, who had just returned from Lagos, should proceed on self -isolation for 14 days, to save the President and his family from the danger of COVID - 19.

Yusuf had visited his wife, who was recently delivered of a baby in Lagos.
The situation worsened when the First Lady’s ADC, in his attempt to apprehend Yusuf allegedly released some gunshots on the premises.

Following the gunshots, Yusuf ran away and took refuge in the nearby house of his uncle, Mamman Daura, also Buhari’s nephew.

The IGP, a report further stated, after receiving security report at the Presidential Villa, ordered the arrest of the ADC to the First Lady and other security aides, who accompanied her to Yusuf’s residence.

Besides the ADC, a chief superintendent of police, others arrested were the escort commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sheriff Kazeem, who is the son of ex -IG, Hafiz Ringim, and four riot policemen who were at the scene of the incident. The operatives are being held since Friday morning.

It was learnt on Sunday that the shooting incident would top the agenda at the weekly meeting of the police management team which would be presided over by the IG at the force headquarters, Abuja, today (Monday).

A source in the Presidency who confided in The Punch, said, “Shooting at the State House is not permitted under any guise. It is a serious security breach that should not have happened. And that is why the IG ordered the detention of the officers involved . The men will face a police panel and if found culpable, may be demoted and redeployed from the Presidential Villa.”

Explaining the incident further, the source stated,“ The ADC, Shugaba, fired gunshots in the air after Yusuf jumped a locked gate in a bid to escape. Yusuf narrated the incident to Daura who informed Mr President; the President was very furious and he complained to the IG.”

“The truth is that the officers can ’ t go back to the villa. If they did not lose their ranks, they would be redeployed to other formations; this kind of incident attracts demotion and serious reprimand,” an official noted.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, could not be reached for comments as he did not respond to calls. He had yet to reply an SMS as of the time of filing this report.

It was further gathered that Shugaba started working with the First Lady about three months ago.

Findings indicated that Shugaba was the Chief Security Officer to the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, before he was redeployed to the Villa as ADC to Aisha .

The Punch learnt that Shugaba had denied firing the shots, insisting that the shooting was done by a DSS official.

‘Tunde’s security aide, not first lady’s ADC, fired shot’
A top aide to the first lady, however, told The Punch that the gunshots that were fired last Thursday emanated from the gun of one of Yusuf’s security aides.

He said it was unfortunate that the police, acting under the instruction of Buhari’ s nephew, Mamman Daura, had decided to take sides with Yusuf (Tunde) and feed lies to the public.

The aide, who wished to remain anonymous said, “Madam (Aisha) never asked her aides to shoot Yusuf. It was Yusuf’s security men that were shooting into the air when madam’s ADC attempted to remove him from the Villa.

“If the police investigate thoroughly , they will discover that the bullets came from the gun of one of Yusuf’ s security aides. Unfortunately, the public is being fed with lies. The police IG is also bowing to pressure from Mamman Daura who is the brother to Tunde’s late mum.

“Also, Yusuf met with Maikanti Baru, the former GMD of NNPC that died of Covid- 19. Tunde’s wife is pregnant but it is not true that he went to visit his wife. He went to visit Baru and that is why we said he should self - isolate.”

Why First Lady has not been speaking –Aide
Meanwhile, Aisha’s Spokesman, Aliyu Abdullahi, has said the first lady ’s aides are still in police custody.

Abdullahi said this on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme on Sunday.

The spokesman, however, dodged several other questions, insisting that the President had already ordered an investigation into the matter.

He also said he was not sure if any of Tunde’s aides had been arrested.

When asked if the aides of the First Lady were still in the custody of the police, the spokesperson said, “In my opinion, I think they are still in the custody of the police . I know her ADC head, escort commander, police attached to her office are in the custody of the police.”

Let the law take its course , Buhari tells police
Meanwhile, the President on Sunday said the law should be allowed to take its course on the shooting incident involving the security aides attached to his wife, Aisha, inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday night.

Buhari, in a statement on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said where armed guards come short in the handling of weapons, their relevant agencies have their rules and regulations to address them.

Overruling his wife’s call for the release of the security details, the President insisted that the law should take its course.
