PDP Leadership Decides On Obaseki As Candidate Today

The People’s Democratic Party’s leadership has decided to meet on Thursday (today) to decide on the fate of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is seeking its ticket to re-contest.

Sources in the main opposition party said that the meeting will consider the reports from the various leaders of the party that the governor has met with in the last five days.

Obaseki met with Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers) and Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) at the weekend before announcing his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) which disqualified him from participating in its primary.

His deputy Phillip Shaibu also resigned and lowered the APC flag in the Government House in Benin.

Obaseki has also reached out to PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, the PDP governors’ forum chair.

How the party will give him the ticket after the completion of the process leading to the primary without a backlash will be the main issue for discussion, it was learnt.

FG Set To Concession Sagamu-Benin, Nine Other Expressways

The Federal Government has concluded plans to concession 10 major highways in the country.

Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, stated this on Wednesday while presenting details of the project to the National Assembly Joint Committee on Works.

He told the lawmakers that the project titled, “Highway Development and Management Initiative”, is anchored on a private sector engagement.

He said the investors would carry out the development and management of the road networks.

He said the rationale behind the private sector engagement is that it would provide an avenue to mitigate paucity of funds, which had hindered roads development in the past.

Fashola said the first phase of the project will attract a capital investment of N163.323bn at a cost of about N16bn per each of the 10 roads.

He also said about 23,322 jobs would be created in the first phase.

The roads are Benin – Asaba, Abuja – Lokoja, Kaduna – Kano, Onitsha – Owerri – Aba, Sagamu -Benin, Abuja -Keffi – Akwanga, Kano – Maiduguri, Lokoja – Benin, Enugu-Port Harcourt, Ilorin-Jebba.

He said the investors are expected to provide streetlights, toll plazas, rest areas, and weighbridge stations.

The Minister further explained that the total length of the federal road network is 35,000km but that the total length of the proposed first phase routes is 2,275km

He said another 10 routes are being identified for the second phase of the Value Added Concession.

He said “The Value Added Concession through the construction of rest areas will reduce fatigue on the highways thereby causing a reduction in accidents as the routes will be better managed and maintained.

“Through the Value Added Concession, there will be job creation in communities that fall along the route which will bring about an increase in rural development.

“Improvement on weighbridge stations will reduce the incidence of roads having to bear loads above their design weight. This will improve the lifespan of the road pavement.”

Woman with biggest lips in the UK explains how she makes money

Woman with “the biggest lips in the UK”, Sofia Lips, has already spent £50,000 on plastic surgery, and she has no plans to stop any time soon.

She has had numerous cosmetic procedures to her lips, cheeks, chin, and jawline, as well as an eyebrow lift, lip lift, two nose jobs, veneers, and Botox.

She explains she is willing to go to extreme lengths to get her dream appearance. In her words:

Facial feminisation is one of the big procedures I have planned as I’m trans and have certain features on my face that I don’t like. Although I’ve been changing my appearance for a few years now, I know this is just the start for me! I’m doing a full head-to-toe transformation, I want to go very extreme with my face like Pete Burns and Amanda Lapore.

However, getting her dream look is expensive. She explains how she has been able to save money. She makes thousands of pounds each month by sharing saucy photos of herself online, specialising in “financially degrading” men.

She started off working as an escort then realised she could make extra cash with the unusual approach which sees men pay her to demand money from them. In her words:

I started off escorting then quickly realised there is this whole world of findom (a form of financial domination whereby men willingly send money to a domme) and cash pigs and cash slaves. My mind was blown and I’ve not looked back since. Just this morning I woke up to a text from a guy asking me if there’s anything he’d like me to do today. I told him, ‘yes, start by emptying your bank account into mine, and then I want you to write lines saying, I must obey goddess Sofia Lips’ and he sent me £1700 and is still writing lines.

Sofia says she is regularly inundated with romantic messages from admiring fans, including almost weekly marriage proposals, offers of free holidays and shopping trips while some men even like to post money through her letterbox.

Sacked Zamfara LG bosses sue governor, vow to reclaim seats

Six council chairmen in Zamfara State, who were sacked by Governor Muhammad Matawalle, have taken the governor to court challenging their removal from office.

Matawalle recently removed all the 14 council chairmen, but later reappointed eight who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). PDP has been holding sway in Zamfara since May 29, 2029.

Chairmen of Gusau, Mafara, Bakura, Maradun, Gumi and Shinkafi councils, who stayed back in the APC, were those not recalled. One of the affected chairmen, Alhaji Babangida Abdullahi, who disclosed their intention to seek redress in court, told newsmen in Abuja that their removal from office was illegal and unconstitutional.

Abdullahi, who was the chairman of Gusau before his removal, lamented that the resolution of the House of Assembly, which the governor relied on to remove them from office, was most undemocratic.

He said they were accused of mismanagement of funds, yet the state assembly neither probed them nor even invited them for questioning, but decided to take the laws into their hands.

He said, “The whole thing is about our refusal to dump the APC for the PDP. The state assembly, which is wholly PDP, chose to victimise us. After accusing us of financial mismanagement, no one ever presented any petition to us, or invited us to face any panel and defend ourselves. The next thing was removing us from office.

“We were 14 council chairmen and the whole drama took place in less than 12 hours. We were sacked and caretaker committees were announced and inaugurated in less than 12 hours.

“What is the criterion used in reappointing the eight as caretaker chairmen? The simple reason is that they have defected to the PDP, but the six of us, who refused to be bought over, were sacked when our tenure has not elapsed.”

Abdullahi declared that the “injustice and undemocratic attitude of the Matawalle-led PDP government” could not stand. “We must pursue it to the final court in the land. The rule of law must take its course, and we must be reinstated to complete our tenure. We were democratically elected and cannot be sacked by wave of the hand.”

Matawalle, who is a product of the rule of law, must not stand the law on its head, he added

“We are surprised that Governor Matawalle, who got his mandate at the Supreme Court, courtesy of the rule of law, will so blatantly violate the constitution of the country. If not for the law, he would not be governor today. Therefore, we call on him to rescind his decision and act in consonance with the laws of the land.”

Demolition: Ikorodu landlords demand compensation from Lagos govt

Some landlords in Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, whose houses were demolished in 2017 for road construction, have begged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to pay their compensations three years after exercise.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ikorodu that they had submitted all necessary documents for payment of the compensation.

The Lagos State Government on December 15, 2017 demolished many houses in the Ikorodu area to pave way for the rehabilitation and expansion of some roads in Igbogbo/ Baiyeku LCDA.

Mr Jacob Arogundade, a 76-year-old retiree who was one of the affected landlords, said they completed documentation but were yet to receive compensation three years after the demolition.

Arogundade said that Gov. Sanwo-Olu had promised to pay the compensation to the affected landlords during his electioneering campaign in Ikorodu in 2019.

“I used all my life savings to build my house which was demolished. At this my old age, who will employ me and how much strength do I still have to work to make money again.

“I became hypertensive seeing my building demolished right in front of me. I hereby beg the government for prompt compensation,” he pleaded.

Another affected landlord, Mr Bolade Ojikutu, a retired Lagos State civil servant, also pleaded for timely payment compensation.

“I saw my building being demolished in my presence and I fell ill immediately; government should please pay the compensation, as all my hope is on the money.

“I am a pensioner and that is the house I built with my last kobo, I need the money to build a small shelter for myself. Some landlords developed partial stroke during the exercise,” Arogundade said.

Mr Samsondeen Atunrase, whose four bedroom flat was demolished, said nothing remained of his house which served as a source of income to him.

He said series of letters had been written to the state government on the matter but nothing was done concerning the plight of landlords whose houses were demolished.

“We are begging the state government under the able leadership of Mr Babajide Sanwoolu to please pay us because the exercise subjected a lot of landlords to untold hardship,” he said.

Another landlord, Mrs Rukayat Sotomiwa, whose late husband was a former member of Lagos House of Assembly, said that the building left behind by the deceased was also demolished.

She appealed to the state government to facilitate early payment of their compensation to enable the family secure shelter for herself and her children.

Another affected landlord, Jimoh Orepekun said:”Immediately my house was demolished, I started staying in the church, my wife and children are living in separate places.

“I used this house as a means of income before, but now, I have lost hope. I am appealing to the governor to pay our compensation as promised during his campaign.”

Mrs Abike Aroyewun, a 81-year-old landlady, said that her house was demolished halfway, making it vulnerable to insecurity.(NAN)

Football viewing centres open, defy FG directive

It was business as usual for operators of football viewing centres in some parts of the country, as they entertained customers during Wednesday’s English Premier League games, in defiance to the directive of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, which placed a ban on viewing centres operating in the country.

The EPL, which has a large following in Nigeria, returned to action on Wednesday after it was suspended on March 13 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The league’s return came as a respite to hitherto aggrieved fans, most of who belonged to the lower class and patronise viewing centres for European football.

Some owners of viewing centres in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Ekiti states, who spoke to punch correspondent last week, expressed delight at the return of the EPL.

They also revealed their plans to maintain social distancing among viewers during the live games.

But a statement by the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, warning against the re-opening of football viewing centres, dashed the hopes of the operators who have been counting their losses since the global ban on sporting activities.

“We have received reports that some states are contemplating the reopening of schools, television viewing centres, sports stadiums and other places where large gatherings could take place,” Mustapha stated at the PTF’s press briefing on Monday.

“The PTF re-emphasises that it is not yet safe to do so and that utmost caution should be exercised. The PTF guidelines should still be complied with while considering decision of this nature.”

But checks by punch correspondent showed that several viewing centres opened on Wednesday, with fans trooping in to watch the EPL matches involving Aston Villa versus Sheffield United and Manchester City versus Arsenal.

Several of the centres monitored by The Punch showed that the fans didn’t wear facemasks and failed to observe social distancing. Also, there were no sanitary facilities on ground for usage.

Adeola Ajide, who watched both games at a viewing centre on Ebiere Street, Isolo, Lagos, said, “The viewing centre at my end is open, though no soap and water to wash hands but all I can see here is social distancing and the use of facemasks.

“The population isn’t as much as we used to have it before the lockdown. I guess the rain is another factor too.”

“Social distancing didn’t work here; I can tell you, I’m the only one wearing a mask in a hall containing 23 people. There’s also no social distancing and the operator of the outlet didn’t provide water, soap or sanitisers for the customers,” John Olakunle, who watched one of Wednesday’s EPL games at a viewing centre on Funsho George Street in Puposhola area of Abule Egba, Lagos, said.

In Makurdi, the Benue State capital, punch correspondent learnt several viewing centres were open for business on Wednesday.

A fan, Friday Tersoo, who watched the City versus Arsenal game at a viewing centre on Bida Street, Wadata, Makurdi, said, “The hall is overfilled with fans, who were eager to watch a high-profile match live for the first time in three months. The operator said only three people should sit on each bench, but nobody obeyed him because of the large crowd. Only few people wore facemasks. Everyone is just happy that football is back.”

A viewing centre operator in Akure, Ondo State, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, admitted he showed the game.

“Fans still came out to watch, so I didn’t have a choice but to show both games,” he said.

However, checks by The Punch showed that some of the operators complied with the FG’s directive.

In Benin City, the Edo State capital, all the centres monitored by punch correspondent were closed, but fans trooped into hotels, to watch the opening games of the EPL.

The two viewing centres visited by The punch in Arepo, Ogun State, were locked while the Arsenal, City game was ongoing.

A football fan in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, Edache Abutu, told punch correspondent he watched the game from home after the viewing centres in his area refused to open for business.

“No viewing centre is showing around here, they are very strict with the directive not to open,” he told The punch.

Punch correspondent also gathered that in areas where viewing centres failed to open, fans trooped to bars to watch the games.

The paper also revealed his real name as Raymond Abbas and his real age as 38 years.

His case has been referred to the Dubai public prosecution and is currently being questioned by prosecutors at the Bur Dubai section, the paper reported.

“The prosecutors have charged him for “obtaining money from others through fraudulent means.”

According to UAE National, security officers in the emirate arrested Mr Abbas and 12 others for online fraud that targets companies and individuals.

Customs FOU seizes 379 packs of Tramadol, other items worth over N56m in Kaduna

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Federal Operation Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’ has seized 379 packs of 225mg tramadol along Kano/Kazaure road.

Comptroller FOU of Zone B, Mustapha Sarkin-Kebb told journalists that the items apprehended included 150 cartons of veterinary drugs without NAFDAC Registration arrested along Jibiya axis, 816 bags of NPK 15:15:15 fertilizer also along jibiya axis, 100 kegs of vegetable oil, 2 trucks loaded with tiger nuts and dates.

Other seized items were 676 bags of 50kg parboiled foreign rice and 60 bales of second-hand clothing.

Sarkin Kebbi said, all the seizures were made within two weeks during the lockdown.

“They are worth N56,577,500 Duty Paid Value (DPV) ” he said.

The smugglers, he explained, had devised various means of concealing their smuggled items.

“We are equally up to the task in busting their tactics,” he said.

“The seized parboiled foreign rice which was intercepted along Kaduna-Zaria road were concealed inside firewood and in sacks that look like charcoal sacks, some were bagged in Nigeria labeled sacks,” he said.

“The driver conveying the seized tramadol escaped into the bush upon sensing trouble.”

“All the interception, arrest and seizures were made through credible intelligence gathering, and I can tell you that smugglers are now finding it very difficult to continue their criminal activities and are now using all manners of tactics to carry out their activities.

“Every time we bust their tactics, they device another tactic, we are not relenting in our efforts until we bring their activities to a standstill”.

“We call on the smugglers who are greedy, criminally-minded, and incurring lots of losses, to embrace legitimate business as a means of livelihood,” he said.

Man City thrash Arsenal; delay Liverpool’s title party

Raheem Sterling scored the first goal of the Premier League’s return to action after the coronavirus lockdown as Manchester City defeated Arsenal 3-0 behind closed doors at the Etihad stadium on Wednesday.

The result means Liverpool, whose lead has been cut to 22 points by second-placed City, cannot now win the title on Sunday at Everton in the Merseyside derby.

But the league table was far from the minds of the few people inside the stadium at kickoff time.

A minute’s silence was observed for victims of the coronavirus followed by the players and officials taking a knee in support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

Sterling, a prominent supporter of the movement whose slogan featured on the players’ shirts, fired home on the stroke of halftime to put the hosts ahead.

City had threatened on several occasions to provide the first goal of “Project Restart” with Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno saving efforts from Sterling and David Silva and racing out to foil Riyad Mahrez.

The goal came after Arsenal substitute David Luiz failed to deal with a ball into the box and allowed Sterling in on goal, and the Brazilian was at fault again for City’s second.

Mahrez got the wrong side of Luiz as he burst into the box and the ex-Chelsea defender put his hand on the Algerian’s back.

Referee Anthony Taylor ruled he had pushed him to the ground, awarding a penalty and sending off Luiz.

Kevin De Bruyne confidently converted the spot-kick and City never looked in any danger against opponents reduced to 10 men.

City also ended the game with 10 players when Spanish defender Eric Garcia was carried off on a stretcher after a collision with his keeper Ederson.

City were not able to replace him as manager Pep Guardiola had used all five available substitutes.

Guardiola’s side wrapped up the win in stoppage time when Sergio Aguero hit the post, after a neat exchange with Sterling, and substitute Phil Foden slotted home the loose ball.

Cristiano Ronaldo loses consecutive finals for the first time

Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, had a cold outing on Wednesday night and couldn’t seal another trophy for Maurizio Sarri’s side as Napoli won the Coppa Italia final on penalties.

However, this makes it the first time the Portuguese hero lost a second consecutive final in his football career.

After a goalless draw in normal time, Napoli secured the trophy in a penalty shootout, beating the Bianconeri 4-2 after Paulo Dybala’s kick was saved while Danilo blasted the ball.

While Ronaldo played the entire game – he had three shots and hit the target with one – he did not get the chance to take a spot-kick as Gennaro Gattuso’s men were declared winners before the Portugal star’s turn came around.

After losing the Supercoppa Italiana to Lazio at the end of last year, it is the second straight final defeat for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

While Ronaldo has contested many domestic and continental finals with every team he has represented so far in his illustrious career, the 35-year-old had never before lost two in a row.

This year’s Coppa Italia is the first in 11 years to be decided by a penalty shootout, while it is the sixth time Napoli have lifted the trophy in their history – only four teams have won it more often.

However, with the Coppa Italia wrapped up, Serie A will return on Saturday, with Torino taking on Parma in the first game back from the coronavirus-enforced suspension.

Juve’s first game back will be against Bologna on June 22, with Napoli taking on Hellas Verona the following day.

Dangote Opens Up On Alleged Link With Jet That Took Naira Marley To Abuja

Businessman Aliko Dangote has denied allegations that he is a co-owner of Executive Jets Services Ltd, an aviation company whose operating license was recently suspended indefinitely by the Ministry of Aviation after flouting lockdown guidelines for safety when it conveyed an artiste to Abuja for a concert amidst COVID19 restrictions.

A statement by Anthony Chiejina, Group Head, Branding and Corporate Communications, Dangote Group refuted claims that Aliko Dangote is part owner of Executive Jets Services Ltd and further denied ownership of the Bombardier Challenger 605 with registration number 5N-EXS.

He said, “Our attention has been drawn to an online publication which alleged that our President/CE, Aliko Dangote is a co-owner of the Executive Jets Services Ltd, a private airline based in Lagos. We hereby refute this allegation in its entirety, as Aliko Dangote has no stake or vested interest in the Executive Jets Services Ltd.”

He further said “The said aircraft Bombardier Challenger 605 with registration number 5N-EXS does not belong to Aliko Dangote. Dangote Group only keeps its fleet of aircraft in the hangars operated by Executive Jets Services Ltd just as others also avail themselves of the hangar services. The general public is hereby advised to disregard this unfounded and misleading report.”

Lagos Businessman Arrested For N75M "Fraud" Dies During COVID-19 Test

A businessman, Godwin Julius, who was being investigated for alleged involvement in a N75m fraud, has died while being tested for COVID-19 at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, Lagos State. Godwin and one Obinale Osunwoke were arrested in the Ejigbo area of the state and were detained after the police reportedly traced some of the money to an account belonging to the late businessman.

It was gathered that the policemen acted on a petition by the representative of a United States of America-based company, Terraroad’s International Incorporation, Wisdom Chris, that the firm had been swindled out of N75m. Wisdom told The Punch that the suspects and others currently at large impersonated the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, and defrauded the firm of $200,000 with forged documents.

He said, “Some of the suspects are still at large. My company in the US got a law firm to write a petition and the only thing I know about the case is that the suspects claimed to be the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, and certain things transpired between my company and them, and the firm, was defrauded of $200,000.

“But when we went to verify the documents, we realised that they were fake. The suspects later confessed that they were fraudsters and wrote an email to that effect. Initially, we got a law firm to investigate the matter, but when they were not forthcoming, the case was reported to the police.”

While the investigation was ongoing, The Punch learnt that the police approached the court to obtain a remand order for Godwin and Osunwoke. However, Godwin reportedly took ill during investigation and was taken to the Police Hospital in Falomo, where a doctor advised that he should be taken to the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, for a COVID-19 test.

Osunwoke, who alleged that the police ignored several pleas to grant them bail, said when Godwin’s health deteriorated, they took him to the hospital for the COVID-19 test, but he died in the process. He said, “One Charles said he needed a domiciliary account and when I asked why, he told me he had some business he was doing overseas. I told Godwin and he called Charles to confirm before his account was used.

“They are saying over N72m, but what was paid into Godwin’s account was $22,000, and out of that amount, we took 20% and Charles was to take 80%. So, when we were arrested, the police refused to grant us bail despite our lawyer and families pleading with them to grant us bail.

“The police took us to court to get an order for us to remain in their custody, but our lawyer disagreed and complained about Godwin’s health, but the magistrate gave the order for the police to detain us for 21 more days, which will elapse on June 29, 2020. When Godwin’s health deteriorated, the Investigating Police Officer took him to hospitals in Obalende and Yaba, where he was rejected. Godwin was later taken to the Police Hospital in Falomo and I followed them.

“The doctor conducted some tests and confirmed that Godwin’s breathing wasn’t normal and suggested that he should be granted bail. He also recommended that he should be taken to the Infectious Disease Hospital. When we got there for the COVID-19 test, the workers spent more than 30 minutes just to take his details and refused to attend to him immediately.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bala Elkana, said, “The two suspects were investigated for international fraud. They forged Federal Government documents and defrauded an international company. They were charged by the SCIID and the court remanded them in police custody. The challenge the police are facing currently is that prisons are not admitting new inmates because of COVID-19; so, once we have a case now, we have the burden of providing detention facility for anybody we take to court.

“That was why the two suspects were brought back to us, and while in remand, Godwin developed symptoms of COVID-19 and we took him to hospitals but he was rejected. We later took him to the Police Hospital in Falomo, where the doctor referred him to the isolation centre in Yaba for a test and he eventually died while on admission.

“The second suspect was also showing similar symptoms, because he had contact with the deceased, and the legal team had to return to court to request that the remand order be vacated so that he could be granted bail to treat himself, because he is of high risk to the persons in our facility. So, he was released by the court.”

Oshiomhole Saga: Two Acting National Chairman Emerge In APC

The Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Victor Giadom, has kicked against the appointment of Abiola Ajimobi as the acting National Chairman of the party.

The Appeal Court on Tuesday upheld the suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of the APC.

And now the battle for his temporary replacement seems to have begun after the National Working Committee, NWC, appointed the immediate past governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, as the acting National Chairman.

However, Giadom, in a statement by his lawyer, Chief Wole Afolabi, insisted that the office of the Acting Chairman is his to occupy.

He insisted that the order of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT High Court issued on March 16, 2020 by Hon. Justice S.U Bature in Suit No. FCT/HC/M/6447/2020 to the effect that Chief Victor Giadom is to act as the National Chairman of the party following the suspension of Oshiomhole remains valid.

He said the High Court order, hereby rendered Ajimobi’s appointment null and void and of no effect.

The statement added, “Our attention has been drawn to a statement purportedly issued by the Publicity Secretary of the APC to the effect that Senator Abiola Ajimobi is to act as the National Chairman of APC following the suspension from office of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by the Court of Appeal.

”We wish to state that the statement must have been issued in complete ignorance of the order of the FCT High Court issued on 16th of March, 2020 by Hon. Justice S.U Bature in Suit No. FCT/HC/M/6447/2020 to the effect that Chief Victor Giadom is to act as the National Chairman of the party due to the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman.

The order was given the same day that the Court of Appeal earlier gave Oshiomhole a temporary respite by staying the execution of the said order suspending Oshiomhole. Now that the Court of Appeal has affirmed the order of suspension, it is only proper that the Order recognising Chief Victor Giadom is implemented.

”Consequently, we have written to all law enforcement agencies to implement the said order and any one who attempts to parade himself/herself other than Chief Victor Giadom as the Acting Chairman of the APC would be facing contempt of court proceeding.”

Manchester United youngster explains visit to T.B Joshua

Manchester United starlet, Angel Gomes, has urged people to concentrate on ‘more important issues’ after a video of his visit to Pastor T. B Joshua, who claims to have healing powers resurfaced on social media, reports metro.co.uk.

Gomes’ future has been the subject of widespread speculation, with his contract due to expire at the end of the month, but the 19-year-old has made headlines for a very different reason this week.

Back in 2016, Gomes made a trip to see the renowned Nigerian pastor at The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations in Lagos and footage of his experience began doing the rounds on Monday evening.

In one of the clips, the England youth international, then aged just 16, explained that persistent injury problems were the reason for his visit.

I’ve been struggling with injuries. I was having injuries around my hip and groin which were affecting me playing and I also suffered an ankle injury which was affecting me playing and kept me out for a long time,’ he said in the video.

“These injuries were coming at hard times for me, times when I was having a breakthrough or times when I had to go to a tournament or play in games. These injuries would happen quite frequently.”

Yesterday morning, Gomes addressed the reaction to the videos and admitted the footage might look ‘crazy’ but stressed that he should be able to practice his faith however he wishes.

“Regarding the video that has come out from 2016. I am from a Christian family at the time my mum was a fan of the pastor, and she really wanted me to go,” Gomes tweeted.

“I was going through some issues. From the outside looking in, it looks crazy, but I was just practicing my faith.”

He added: “I didn’t really need to explain myself but a lot of people was asking me what the video was about.

“I was young at the time and if my parents thought something was best for me I would do it.”

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright showed his support for Gomes as he responded to the youngster’s explanation.

“Absolutely none of their business [love heart emoji],” Wright replied.

Gomes became the youngest player to make a first-team appearance for the Red Devils since Duncan Edwards when he debuted against Crystal Palace back in May 2017.

But Gomes’ opportunities have been limited since then and the teenager has played just six times for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this term.

Barcelona and Chelsea have both been heavily linked with Gomes in recent weeks, with the England Under-20 international set to become a free agent this summer.

Six Nigerians blamed for $6 million scam in the US

The United States authorities on Tuesday announced that it has uncovered a six million online scam deal involving six Nigerians.

US Department of State disclosed this in a statement signed by the Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.

“Today, in coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control took action against six Nigerian nationals, pursuant to Executive Order 13694 as amended,” US Justice Department said.

DoJ said the Nigerians were indicted “for conducting an elaborate online scheme to steal more than $6 million from victims across the United States.”

The six Nigerians, DoJ disclosed, manipulated their victims to gain access to their sensitive information and financial resources.

“The U.S. will not tolerate such gross misuse of technology,” DoJ said.

The names of these 6 Nigerians who were disclosed by the office of Foreign Assets Control and are alleged to have committed those cyber-crimes include, Nnamdi Orson, Kayode Biola Ayorinde, Ogunshakin Alex Afolabi, Okpoh Felix Osilama, Olorunyomi Michael and Uzuh Richard Izuchukwu.

The US authorities vowed to use all of the tools at its disposal to defend the American people and businesses from malign actors that seek to target them, including cyber-enabled actors who prey on vulnerable Americans and businesses.

DoJ, however, believes that the six Nigerians and other cyber fraudsters were negatively utilising the opportunities provided by technology through the internet.

“Technological advancements that provide greater interconnectivity also offer greater opportunity for exploitation by malicious actors who target at-risk Americans,” DoJ said.

The United States Secret Service said in a memo in May that a Nigerian-based group was involved in orchestrating a COVID-19-related fraud targeting multiple American states has been traced back to Nigeria, an internal US Secret Service memo said.

The memo, seen by The Guardian, was reportedly sent to Secret Service’s field offices across the US on Thursday, May 14.

The Secret Service said the fraudsters are exploring the COVID-19 pandemic to commit massive fraud against by targeting unemployment insurance programmes.

“The United States Secret Service has received reporting of a well-organized Nigerian fraud ring exploiting the COVID-19 crisis to commit large-scale fraud against state unemployment insurance programs,” the memo said.

A California-based cybersecurity firm Agari said on Tuesday, May 19, that “some if not all” of those who committed the fraud are part of a Nigerian fraud group Scattered Canary.

A Nigerian social media celebrity Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi, was recently arrested in Dubai by Interpol for alleged cyber fraud. Media reports said American officials were pushing for his extradition to the United States because the majority of those he defrauded are American citizens.
