Facebook removes Trump’s re-election messages

Facebook on Thursday removed ads by President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign that contained a symbol used in Nazi Germany for political prisoners.

The leading social network, which has drawn fire over its hands-off approach to political speech in recent months, said in a statement the campaign messages violated a policy against “organised hate” and were taken down as a result.

“We don’t allow symbols that represent hateful organisations or hateful ideologies unless they are put up with context or condemnation,” Facebook head of security policy Nathaniel Gleicher said at a House of Representatives committee hearing.

“That’s what we saw in this case with this ad, and anywhere that that symbol is used we would take the same actions.”

Facebook’s move against the ads targeted when the contended are dangerous far-left groups comes amid heated debate between social platforms and political leaders on what content may be allowed or banned.

In a tweet from a “Trump War Room,” the campaign contended the upside-down red triangle symbol at issue was “widely used” in reference to left-wing activist group Antifa.

Watchdog group Media Matters replied with a tweet saying that is certainly not the case.

Your Best Not Good Enough - Buhari Knocks Service Chiefs

President Muhammadu Buhari is unhappy with the current state of the security situation in the country.

Disclosing this to State House Correspondents on Thursday, after a security briefing, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd.), said the President had charged managers of the nation’s security to redouble their efforts.

According to Monguno, the President said, though the security chiefs had been doing their best, their best had not been good enough for the challenges facing the nation.

He has therefore declared that excuses will no longer be tolerated, even as he said he expects everyone to live up to expectations.

He also expressed displeasure over the lack of synergy amongst security forces and charged the various aspects of the security architecture to work together to solve the nation’s security challenges.

Buhari charged the office of the NSA to meet with governors of the Northwest states and that of Niger State, for briefing and strategic organisation of a response to the Banditry problem in their domains.

Plot To Bring Back Obaseki To APC With The Suspension Of Oshiomhole

Scheming for the control of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by various camps ahead of 2023 general elections has worsened the crisis rocking the ruling party, Daily Trust reports.

Two top chieftains of the party yesterday claimed to be its acting chairman following the suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

The chieftains represent two key camps of the party who are out to grab the leadership position.

The upholding of the suspension of Oshiomhole by the Court of Appeal had created a vacuum in the leadership of the party.

To fill the vacuum, the National Working Committee (NWC) had named a former governor Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi as the acting national chairman of the party. However, at the party’s secretariat around 10:00 am yesterday, the Deputy National Secretary of the party, Chief Victor Giadom declared himself as the acting chairman of the party, puncturing the announcement by the NWC of the party.

While Ajimobi’s camp has the backing of the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Giadom, party sources said is of the camp of some serving and former governors. The camp is tagged ‘Amaechi/ El-Rufai camp.’

However, some sources in Progressives Governor’s Forum told Daily Trust that there were moves to bring back Obaseki to the party in view of the new developments.

One of the sources said, “Oshiomhole had been the stumbling block and he is out of the equation for now. “We strongly feel that we have to work for our colleague, Governor Obaseki who did nothing wrong.

“Now that he is gone, even those who claim to be national leaders or whatever have been checkmated. “Governors would have their way because they are with the people at the grassroots.

“They would not allow the interest of few individuals to hold Nigeria to ransom,” he said. Giadom’s claim Citing a court order, Giadom said he is the acting national chairman of the party and announced that a fresh screening would be conducted for all aspirants who intend to seek for governorship tickets of the party in Edo and Ondo states.

Describing Ajimobi’s appointment as illegal and unconstitutional, he cited a subsisting court order issued on March 16, 2020, by Justice S.U. Bature as basis for his ascension to office.

“That order could not immediately come to effect at that time because of the temporary reprieve Oshiomhole got from the Court of Appeal,” Giadom said.

“However, having removed the temporary reprieve yesterday (Tuesday) by the Court of Appeal and considering the fact that we cannot allow for a vacuum, I most humbly inform you that I have assumed office as acting national chairman of our great party in compliance with the order of the court,” he said.

Uneasy calm in Tinubu’s camp
Daily Trust gathered from reliable sources that the unfolding drama in the national secretariat of the APC is causing uneasy calm in the camp of the Tinubu.

Tuesday’s sack of Oshiomhole reportedly jolted the supporters of Asiwaju who is believed to have the ears and the eyes of Oshiomhole. But the confirmation of Ajimobi by the NWC of the party was seen as a relief to the camp of Asiwaju.

The APC leader who is rumoured to be nursing 2023 presidential ambition and Ajimobi are close political associates. In fact, the emergence of Ajimobi as the deputy national chairman (South) of the party was said to have the strong backing of Tinubu.

“We are relieved that at the end of the day, it is a win-win for the Asiwaju’s camp with the confirmation of Ajimobi,” a source said.

Buhari Sacks His Security Details Over Aso Rock Crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari has fired his security details and other persons in Aso Villa over the role they played in the crisis between his wife, Aisha, and Sabiu 'Tunde' Yusuf, his close assistant.

Those fired by Buhari on Wednesday included his Chief Personal Security Officer, Chief Detail to President, ADC to the First Lady, Escort Commander, ADC National Defence Council, and 37 others from the villa.

SR gathered that President Buhari decided to take the step after Mamman Daura, his nephew and one of his closest confidants, was seen weeping as he made his way to his office.

Daura was said to have informed Buhari that his security aides were not only after Yusuf’s life but his own as well.

Buhari gave the nod for all persons involved in the alleged threat to the lives of the two men to be removed.

The crisis started with Yusuf's refusal to embark on a 14-day isolation period after returning to Abuja from a trip to Lagos last week.

This led to the arrest and eventual redeployment of the Aide De Camp to Mrs Buhari and other security details attached to her after it was claimed that they threatened to kill the President's Assistant in the process of trying to get him out of the Villa.

Inside sources say the latest step by the President could further stir the bad blood among different power blocs in Aso Villa, especially with the First Lady vowing to take a pound of flesh for being embarrassed by Yusuf and other 'cabal' members.

Nigerians Have Right To Complain About Insecurity - Sultan Tells FG

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar 111, yesterday told the Federal Government that Nigerians have a right to express their feelings over the spate of killings in the country, especially in the north.

The JNI also blasted security agencies over what he described as lackadaisical attitude in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes in the country, saying they seemed to be overwhelmed by the problem.

Its statement came against the backdrop of attacks on the convener of Northern Elders Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi and some Arewa youth groups who expressed reservations over government’s inability to stop the orgy of killings in the north earlier this week.

JNI’s position was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, titled ‘’Nigeria’s perilous security challenge: Enough of condemnations, government must take decisive action, stop the rhetoric.”

The statement read: “The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, under the leadership of His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and JNI’s President-General, is in utter shockwave over the unfortunate repeated incidents of loss of precious lives and wanton destruction of property arising from well-coordinated attacks of armed bandits, Boko Haram terrorist groups and rapists.

“These repeated calamitous scenarios would have been avoided had the government risen to the occasion. We, nonetheless, as always, condemn the repeated brutal acts in their entirety; especially the lackadaisical attitude of relevant security agencies that seemed to be overwhelmed, despite repeated calls by concerned and well-meaning Nigerians for a decisive action.

What govt should do

‘’We implore government to take all genuine calls, concerns so raised and recommendations proffered so far, even from perceived and/or alleged antagonists in good fate, in order to move the country on the path of glory – human security, as development in whatever guise, is utterly incomplete without security.

‘’Government should also note that citizens have a right to be listened to, over their feelings on insecurity challenge in Nigeria. The repeated massacres of people, as well as the senseless burning of houses and livestock that do ensue in Borno, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger states and, indeed, other states such as Adamawa, Kaduna and Taraba, should give governments and its functionaries at both federal and state levels sleepless nights.

‘’By now, an instantaneous pronouncement, followed by robust actions should have been made by the government of the day, not verbal warnings and condemnations dished out to the perpetrators of the murderous acts.

‘’JNI also notes with dismay the lack of symbolic gestures to affected communities by those in authorities. They remain in their comfort zones as their subjects are subjected to arson and killings of the highest degree.

‘’This has thrown the affected areas into despair and the bandits are emboldened, seeing that the government seems not much bothered, resulting from its action about the plight of the people so affected.

‘’We are, however, not oblivious of the fact that security matters are not often for public consumption, but not in perilous situations. Citizens’ confidence need to be strengthened, with resounding reassurances. Government should not reduce itself to just issuing light press statements on security upheavals.

“As stakeholders, we strongly believe that the repeated killings are blameworthy, and no one found culpable in this gross act of negligence should be spared. In all honesty, all erring personnel would have been dealt with decisively by now or they themselves should have honorably resigned, as oftentimes seen in other climes."

President Buhari allegedly sacks security details over Aso Villa crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari has fired his security details and other persons in Aso Villa over the role they played in the crisis between his wife, Aisha, and Sabiu 'Tunde' Yusuf, his assistant, according to SaharaReporters.

Those fired by Buhari on Wednesday included his Chief Personal Security Officer, Chief Detail to President, ADC to the First Lady, Escort Commander, ADC National Defence Council, and 37 others from the villa.

SaharaReporters had on Tuesday exclusively reported that President Buhari, who was deeply angered by the embarrassing crisis in Aso Villa, was preparing to fire his security details and some top aides for the roles they all played in dragging the Presidency into the mud.

It was gathered that President Buhari decided to take the step after Mamman Daura, his nephew and one of his closest confidants, was seen weeping as he made his way to his office.

Daura was said to have informed Buhari that his security aides were not only after Yusuf’s life but his own as well.

Troy Deeney says there may be at least one gay or bisexual player in every team

Troy Deeney reckons there is ‘probably one gay or bi player’ in every football team and once one comes out there will be ‘100 more’.

The Watford captain thinks it just needs one big star to be the ‘face’ of LGBT in football to trigger a wave of players revealing they are gay.

Deeney, 31, said he could not understand why players kept it under wraps until their careers were over.

“I feel like it must be a really heavy load to carry throughout all your whole sporting career,’’ he said.

“I think there is now a bigger platform than ever to be a gay athlete of any nature.”

Deeney told the Grounded With Louis Theroux podcast on BBC Sounds and Radio 4 that he was ‘100%’ sure many footballers were gay.

But they did not want to have to ‘shoulder the responsibility of being the first’.

“I think once the first comes out there would be loads," he said.

Host Louis asked what would happen if a star of the magnitude of Ronaldo had been gay.

Deeney, a divorced dad-of-two, replied: “I don’t see that as an issue.

“But if he came out and said it I genuinely believe you would get in the first week at least a hundred people that went ‘me too’ just because they don’t want to be the face of it.’’

Lion bones used in Chinese medicine could risk a fresh pandemic, wildlife experts warn

Trading the bones of captive lions to be used in Chinese medicines could risk a fresh pandemic, wildlife experts have claimed.

Lord Ashcroft, the former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, has been a vocal opponent of lion farming and warns that the squalid conditions the big cats are kept under in South African farms could spark a new global health crisis similar to the current coronavirus pandemic.

The 74-year-old has campaigned to expose the practice of lion breeding at 333 South African farms where the animals are butchered and their skeletons sold for Chinese medicine, wines and jewellery.

He has condensed his findings in a new book titled Unfair Game which also investigates the filthy conditions farmed lions live in.

His book claims lions are ‘deboned’ while still alive to give the bones a lucrative “pink colour” due to blood remaining in the bones.

He alleges that the dirty conditions the animals live in risk the animals contracting fatal diseases including tuberculosis and botulism which can then be passed to humans.

Lord Ashcroft writes: "So are we sleep-walking straight into a new major public health crisis with the lion bone industry at its core? I fear we are.

"It could be a surge in a disease that already exists, or it could be a new and frightening infection, just like Covid-19 was."

There is no evidence to support Lord Ashcroft's claims that lion bones could spark something on the same scale as the coronavirus pandemic.

In a discussion with The Sun, Dr Peter Caldwell, a wildlife vet, said he shares Lord Ashcroft’s concerns of diseases spreading from animals to humans.

He highlights botulism as a concern as the disease, which attacks the nervous system, could spread to people via infected bones and skin.

He said: “If that lion dies from botulism, the people who bred it won’t waste that animal by burying it or burning it. Instead, they will put it into the lion bone and skin trade.

“And the toxin remains in the body, so the people who utilise that lion can die a miserable, painful death.”

Lord Ashcroft’s book suggests 12,000 lions are bred in captivity in South Africa, while just 3,000 exist in the wild – while the bones of the beasts are believed to be worth up to £3,200 when sold.

PDP Leadership Decides On Obaseki As Candidate Today

The People’s Democratic Party’s leadership has decided to meet on Thursday (today) to decide on the fate of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is seeking its ticket to re-contest.

Sources in the main opposition party said that the meeting will consider the reports from the various leaders of the party that the governor has met with in the last five days.

Obaseki met with Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers) and Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) at the weekend before announcing his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) which disqualified him from participating in its primary.

His deputy Phillip Shaibu also resigned and lowered the APC flag in the Government House in Benin.

Obaseki has also reached out to PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, the PDP governors’ forum chair.

How the party will give him the ticket after the completion of the process leading to the primary without a backlash will be the main issue for discussion, it was learnt.
