19-year-old footballer who moved to America on a scholarship dies within week of discovering cancer

A 19-year-old footballer who moved to America on a scholarship has died just a few weeks after discovering he had blood cancer.

Joe Aspinall, who attended Coastal Bend College in Texas, passed away on June 10 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The teenager's devastated parents have paid tribute to their 'fit and healthy' son, who had returned from Texas to Highburton, West Yorkshire, at the start of the coronavirus crisis.

His father Brendan, a former professional footballer who played for Mansfield Town and Coleraine, wrote an emotional tribute that was released by a family friend.

He said: 'Our fantastic 19-year-old fit and healthy son Joseph passed away on June 10 in intensive care at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

'He had been studying a soccer scholarship at Coastal Bend College in Texas until we brought him home at the start of lockdown.

'He became unwell in early May and was admitted to hospital on the 25th.

'Following initial tests they found he had a haematological malignancy (blood cancer) that caused blood clots in his spleen and fatally, his lungs.

'He was taken to intensive care on June 5 and despite a very brave fight and always remaining calm, he sadly couldn't prevent the clots causing his heart and lungs to be unable to cope.

'He was comforted at the end by his parents, sister and brother.

'We have had hundreds of messages from people whose lives he had touched. His school friends, football and cricket teammates, work friends and his recent American college friends.

'We are a private family and are so proud of Joseph and following all the messages of support have realised what a special part of so many lives he was and we will get strength from this.

'One of his school friends, Charlotte and two of his close cousins Ella and Billy have wanted to show their respects by doing fundraising events and we find these efforts amazing and very thoughtful.

'We are in shock and devastated by the past fortnight's events butmwould like to thank the staff at HRI and the support of family thatmhas helped us through.'

More than £6,500 has been raised for the family by Joe's former Shelley College classmate, Charlotte Oldroyd.

Buhari May Sack, Detain EFCC Chairman Over Missing Recovered Billions

Barring last minute reprieve, Ibrahim Magu, acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), may not only be on his way out of office, but also may be looking towards days of accounting for alleged infractions preferred against him by Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.

Presidency sources disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari had given Malami approval to investigate and prosecute Magu following his memorandum, where he itemised 22 weighty allegations against the EFCC chairman, who has occupied the office for nearly five years in acting capacity.

The sources said the EFCC chairman will temporarily hand over the anti-graft agency to the next most senior person, Mohammed Umar Abba, Director of Operations of the agency.

Malami had also included a short list of three candidates for consideration to replace Magu. Our sources said FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, may ultimately replace him, being the most favoured among the three names Malami submitted to the president.

One of the sources told Daily Independent that the president wanted the panel to investigate the authenticity of the property and proxy allegations against Magu, noting that “because of the weight of the allegations, and the kind of person managing the EFCC, the president wouldn’t want to take any decision in a hurry. So he made sure a crack team is assembled to look into the matter holistically.”

According to him, Ayo Salami, former President of Court of Appeal, is heading the panel with the offices of National Security Adviser (NSA); Director General, Department of State Services (DSS); Director General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Police, and Attorney General of the Federation as members.

According to the source, the panel has two weeks to submit its report to the president, but had already done a week.

Malami, had in his memorandum to the president, made allegations bordering on financial malfeasances in failure to declare actual money recovered from looters. He also accused Magu of gross insubordination, refusing directives from the commission’s supervisory ministry; and as a result, the Federal Government has come under severe attack and embarrassment on account of odium stemming from poorly pursued investigations.

The AGF’s memo made strong innuendos purporting that Magu has made himself a willing tool in the hands of politicians thereby reducing the sterling reputation EFCC once enjoyed.

Sources at the presidency insisted on Friday that Buhari has indeed signed off on the memo only awaiting implementation.

“By the recommendation, Magu should be eased out of office, and prosecuted on the strength of the allegations made against him,” explained a presidency source to the newspaper, who said the president was livid after reading the memo.

Adding further, the sources said that had the matter rested squarely on just Malami’s memo, maybe a form of reprieve could have been worked out for the commission’s chairman.

“Malami was extensively debriefed on the matter. Security agencies were also involved in the matter and they all came back with damning verdicts,” the source added.

So far, the presidency has refused to say much on the matter.

In a text message response by Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, asking for confirmation on whether Magu will be eased out, the presidential spokesman simply said, “I don’t know the answer to your question.”

Several attempts at reaching Dele Oyewale, Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, yielded no result as his phones continued ringing without the calls being picked up. However, another source within the commission told the newspaper that there cannot be any official response from EFCC unless matters are directed at them.

But as also learnt, Magu is said not to be leaving anything to chance. It was learnt that some of his backers with link at the Presidential Villa have been putting in words for the embattled anti-graft’s czar, telling Mr. President that Magu is being hounded by corrupt politicians.

Ibidunni’s mother planned house gift for daughter’s 40th birthday – Asue Ighodalo

Asue Ighodalo, brother of Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of Trinity House, has said the mother of the late Ibidunni planned to give her a surprise gift on her 40th birthday.

The punch had earlier reported that the late businesswoman cum philanthropist was buried on Saturday afternoon at a private residence.

At the Funeral Service aired live via the church’s social media platforms and monitored by The Punch were a number of dignitaries including Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and a representative of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

When called to say the Votes of Thanks, Asue explained in an emotion-laden tone how he and Pastor Ituah had gone to break the news of Ibidunni’s death to her mother and how they took time to comfort her.

Asue said during the visit last weekend, Ibidunni’s mother took him to the house she had been building as a birthday present for her daughter.

Narrating the experience, Asue said, “Ibidun’s mom had been working on a house that she wanted to give Ibidun on her 40th birthday. So, she took my hand and showed me the house.

“She said, ‘Uncle Asue, I want you to see the house. I was going to give this key to you to give Ituah on the 18th so that Ituah will give her on the 19th. I needed to show my daughter how much I truly loved her.’ And she took me to the house, the house nearly completed in her Estate.”

The Punch had earlier reported that celebrity photographer, TY Bello, revealed that the late ex-Beauty Queen planned to mark her 40th birthday next month by helping 40 couples to have their babies.

The late philanthropist, who died of cardiac arrest in Port Harcourt on Sunday, was reputed for her non-governmental organisation, Ibidunni Ighodalo Foundation, through which she counseled couples facing fertility challenges and supported them financially for in vitro fertilisation.

COVID-19: Churches in Oyo state reopen after three months

Churches in Oyo State have reopened after three months of closure due to the ban placed on religious gatherings by the government.

You would recall that the state government had in March, placed a ban on religious gathering as part of measures to curb the spreading of the novel coronavirus disease.

The government, however, announced recently that churches and mosques in the state could reopen with some guidelines.

It directed that religious centres must operate, at not more than 25 per cent capacity, while wearing facemasks throughout the service among other measures.

The NAN correspondent, who visited some churches including the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Winners Chapel among others on Sunday in Ibadan, observed that the churches maintained the guidelines set by the government.

It was observed that there were buckets of running water and liquid soaps placed at entry points for members to wash their hands before and after the service.

Some of the churches had earlier fumigated their environments while all members were sighted putting on face masks as sitting arrangements gave room for social distancing.

Some of the churches held multiple numbers of services so as to allow social distancing while thermometers were used to check members’ temperature before they entered the church.

Also, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman in Oyo state, Apostle Joshua Akinyemiju, urged churches to maintain the guidelines set by the government.

“While appreciating the governor for allowing churches to worship, Christians must endeavour to abide by all the government’s guidelines to that effect.

“We should remember that the Bible enjoins us in Hebrew 13:17, to obey those that have the rule over us.

“Now that government has lifted ban on religious centres with conditions attached, it behoves us, as religious leaders, to ensure absolute compliance to protect government from being blamed for its leniency,’’ Akinyemiju said.

Also, the Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Jesus Assembly Parish, Ibadan, Pastor Vincent Ajiboye, thanked God and the government for the opportunity to reopen churches.

“It’s good really to open in phases because of all we have gone through.

“Our church is open and to the glory of God we are fully prepared.

“May the lord see us through in Jesus name, amen,’’ Ajiboye prayed.

A Christian faithful, Mr Ademola Ilori, expressed gratitude to God for giving him and family the grace and opportunity to worship again.

“We thank the government also for this, but we will appreciate them to increase the time/hours given for churches to operate, so as to enable us express our profound gratitude and service to God,’’ he said.

How Influential People Are Violating Buhari's 'No-Flight' Order

The restriction on flights imposed by the Federal Government in the wake of the global Coronavirus pandemic to curtail its spread in Nigeria is being observed in the breach.

Despite the restriction, first imposed on March 21, some commercial and private airlines have continued to ferry un-exempted passengers, mostly VIPS, within and outside the country in clear violation of the Quarantine Act signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The president’s daughters, his chief of staff, other aides and many state governors were among those found to have violated the inter-state travel restrictions.

Investigations also show that airlines that obtain the necessary permits to convey VIPs take undue advantage to ferry family members, associates and other passengers not included in the exemption category.

Daily Trust reporters who spent some time in the past few days at the Murtala Mohammed and Nnamdi Azikiwe airports in Lagos and Abuja found that aircraft belonging to security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Air force and the Police were being used to convey un-exempted passengers.

Multiple sources disclosed that the security agencies use their privileges to convey family members, associates and friends of top security personnel while ordinary Nigerians are being arrested and charged across the country for violating interstate travel restrictions.

The presidency has also denied that the first family have violated the travel restriction, while, the federal ministry of Aviation, Nigerian Air Force and the Police have not responded to our requests for comment.

Buhari’s daughters, governors among violators
Daily Trust checks show that asides other private and commercial airlines, state governors have also been embarking on air travels in clear violation of interstate travel which they agreed on as a measure to mitigate community transmission of COVID-19.

The governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) had on Wednesday, April 22, “unanimously” agreed to the implementation of an interstate lockdown in the country to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 from state to state, giving permission to only essential services.

However, some of the governors have been violating the travel restrictions with several trips to Abuja and Lagos undertaken by flight. On Monday, June 1, Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo State flew into Abuja to visit President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to formally inform him of his intention to seek re-election for a second term.

The same day, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, led six of his colleagues to meet with the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC on what was believed to be a last-minute effort to save Obaseki’s candidacy ahead of the APC primary election in Edo.

Many aviation stakeholders and the general public have raised eyebrows over the violation of the ban by some VIPs who were not on essential flights.

For instance not a few tongues wagged recently following the controversy generated when the Special Assistant to the President, Sabiu Tunde Yusuf, was asked by the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, to respect the COVID-19 guidelines, following his alleged refusal to go on self-isolation after returning from an air trip to Lagos.

“So far, what we have seen is the violation of this restriction by some VIPs. The other day, the governors flew into Lagos State and back to Abuja, there was also the case of the President’s aide which caused rumbles recently in the villa,” said a Lagos-based operator who wouldn’t want to be named.

Another source at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, alleged that some aircraft registered as private non-commercial jets were being used for commercial services.

“There was never a day you would not see one private jet or the other taking off and landing at this airport despite the restriction. You then wonder if all were special or exempted flights,” the source said. It was also revealed that the President’s daughters, Zahra and Halima, had also travelled out of the villa by flight to visit their in-laws when Halima’s husband’s uncle died recently.

Similar trips were said to have been undertaken by President Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, who went to Lagos. There was also public outrage recently when a private airline operator, Executive Jets Services Ltd, conveyed a popular musician Naira Marley and ex-BBNaija housemate, Kim Oprah, to Abuja for a concert at the Jabi Lake Mall in Abuja last weekend.

Although the flight was said to have been approved to convey a serving judge from Lagos to Abuja and back, on official assignment, the flight operator violated the approval by conveying the musician.

The Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika later announced that Executive Jets Services Ltd, the flight company that conveyed musician Naira Marley and ex-BBNaija housemate, Kim Oprah, to Abuja for a concert has been suspended indefinitely.

When contacted, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, said he was not aware that some members of the First Family have undertaken inter-State journeys. “But what I want you to understand is that while all forms of air travel are not allowed-international, interstate and intrastate and remain suspended, such flights are cleared to operate by the Ministry of aviation for all services adjudged as essential.

“So if members of the First Family fly, do you know the essential nature of such trips? Can you, where you are sitting, determine what is essential for the First Family or the Chief of Staff?” “The Ministry determines what is essential service before they give authorization. Members of the first family can be on essential service.

“Judges are being moved around as are doctors. As I write, the Country Representative of the Wold Health Organization, WHO and the Director General of the National Center for Disease Control, NCDC are in Delta State and will be returning to Abuja, Shehu said.

Air Force, Police Aircraft ferry un-exempted passengers
Investigations by Daily Trust further revealed that aircraft belonging to security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Air force and the Police were being used to convey un-exempted passengers.

Multiple sources informed Daily Trust that although the necessary permits were obtained for the security aircraft, they were used to convey un-exempted persons, mostly family members, associates and friends of top security personnel.

A source who was ferried in an Air Force aircraft from Lagos to Abuja in March revealed how ‘connections’ are used to violate the travel restriction order. “On that day, we arrived Abuja from Lagos on a C-130 aircraft mostly used for cargo.

We were about 60-70 persons on the flight. Our temperatures were checked and our hands sanitized, but we didn’t have face masks aboard the flight. The source, who wouldn’t want to be identified for security reasons, disclosed that the majority of the passengers were family members of Air force personnel who were going back to Abuja.

On how access was granted, the source said, “You have to have contact with someone high up there to get a pass. Your name has to be on the list to be given a pass to board the aircraft.

“On three different occasions, I went there but was not able to board because there were many passengers. If you can’t board, your name is put on the waiting list, and on our fourth try, I was able to board. “We landed at the Air force terminal in Abuja and exited through the back door.”

'Oshiomhole Remains Suspended' - APC Ward Chairman Insists

Mr. Oshawo Stephen, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Etsako West Ward 10, has dismissed claims that the suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as a member of the party has been lifted, insisting that the ward executives stand by their suspension of the erstwhile National Chairman of the APC.

Stephen in a statement, said the ward executives who were elected into office in 2018 remain intact and have not been displaced by anybody, describing the claims of the lifting of the suspension as a charade.

According to him, “The suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by the ward executives remains valid. The statements to the contrary in the media are false and should be disregarded. We stand by our decision and have no reservation on the action as it is in the best interest of the party.

“The ward executives as well as our counterparts at the Etsako West Local Government level stand by the suspension of Comrade Oshiomhole for his divisive role in the crisis rocking the APC in Edo State.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman APC in Etsako West LGA, Ezolomhe Rabiat, also affirmed that the LGA executives are still members of the party in the state and stand by the suspension of Comrade Oshiomhole.

COVID-19: Lagos, Kwara, Bauchi to convert Hajj camps, schools to isolation centres

With the rising number of COVID-19 cases, Lagos and Kwara state governments have announced plans to convert their Hajj and pilgrims’ camps to isolation centres to ease the burden on hospital facilities and the limited number of bed spaces.

There had been a spike in the number of cases in the country in recent times.

On Saturday, there were 661 new cases, pushing the total cases to 19,808. There were 19 new deaths, pushing the total deaths to 506, while 19,808 patients have so far been discharged.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Government has also said it had prepared two schools for conversion into isolation centres.

The Lagos State Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Olusegun Ogboye, disclosed the possible conversion of Hajj camps and other public places into isolation centres in an interview with one of punch correspondents, noting that four communities with the highest cases were already under consideration.

The Bauchi State Government, on its part, said it had set apart two schools as isolation centres to accommodate more COVID-19 patients.

The state Commissioner for Education, Dr Aliyu Tilde, confirmed this to one of punch correspondents, saying the move was to plan ahead should current facilities be overstretched.

Meanwhile, Oyo State Government said it planned to partner hotels for bed spaces for prospective COVID-19 patients, while Osun, Katsina and Kano states claimed they had sufficient hospital bed spaces in case of rising COVID-19 cases.

The three states said they had not been contacted by the Presidential Task Force on the possible use of schools as isolation centres and had no such plan.

On May 28, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, stated that the Federal Government would require hotels and school dormitories to be prepared as quarantine and isolation centres in the event of overwhelming COVID-19 cases and the pressure on hospital beds.

The minister, during the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, added that the government anticipated the shortage of hospital bed spaces due to rising COVID-19 cases and therefore opted for the use of school dormitories as an alternative.

“We need to continue increasing bed capacity to match the probable number of patients so that we do not experience horrific scenes of bed space shortages seen in some European hospitals.

“In event of overflow, we can require hotels and school dormitories to be prepared for level 1 which is quarantine, and level 2 which is the isolation of COVID-19 positive with zero or mild symptoms, to free hospital beds to be dedicated to level 3 which are moderate to severe cases and level 4 which is the high dependency and Intensive care unit,” he said.

This move is also partly based on the assertion of the Federal Ministry of Education in the third week of May that the government could not risk the reopening of schools until all measures had been put in place.

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, had said, “We are not taking that risk yet. We are going to prepare as much as possible within the guidance that we are offered, working in conjunction with the World Health Organisation before we reopen schools.”

Amid rising COVID-19 cases, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Ogboye, said the state was considering Hajj camps and possibly schools, as well as liaising with four endemic communities.

He said, “We are using a strategy that involves three types of isolation centres. If someone is asymptomatic and very mildly asymptomatic, they will be treated at home. They will be isolated at home and we will visit them and give them the drugs that they will be taking. We will be visiting them to check their temperature on a daily basis. That is if their house meets the requirements for self-isolation at home.

“Some people’s houses are too small; they don’t have private toilets and so they cannot meet the criteria for self-isolation at home. Those are the ones that we intend to isolate at the community-based or community-supported centres. We have had a meeting with the PTF about the possible support from the Federal Government to establish these community centres.

“We are going to start with about four of them. We are going to focus on the highest burdened local governments. So, we are in the process of identifying four of them now. It may not necessarily be schools, it may be community centres; it may be Hajj camps and areas that can accommodate quite a large number of people. We have not started implementing but it is a discussion we are having with the Federal Government and we are in agreement about how to move forward.

“The third level is the isolation centres that we have. These are for moderate to severe COVID-19 complications.”

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Tilde, said the state government had set aside the Government Girls College, Bauchi, and the Government Secondary School, Azare, as isolation centres.

He said, “When the Commissioner for Health and his team met with me, we suggested to them some of the schools that we have here in Bauchi and in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area. The schools are Government Girls College, Bauchi. In Azare, we have Government College, Azare, or Government Secondary School, Azare.”

In Kwara State, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Fatimah Ahmed, said had no plan yet to use public school dormitories as isolation centres but it had prepared 600 bed spaces in its state pilgrims’ camp in Ilorin, the state capital.

She said, “We have no such plan to use our public school dormitories as isolation centres for the treatment of COVID-19 patients and the Federal Government has not made such request from the state government. So, we don’t have such a plan.”

The Chief Press Secretary to the state governor and spokesperson for the COVID-19 Technical Committee in the state, Mr Rafiu Ajakaye, said the state had 3,000 bed spaces at its isolation centres at Sobi Specialist Hospital, Ilorin and General Hospital, Offa.

“Though there is an increasing number of COVID-19 patients in the state, we have enough bed spaces in our isolation centres and we also have about 600 bed spaces in the state pilgrims’ camp in Ilorin which we have not even used,” he said.

In Kano State, the state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Muhammadu Kiru, said the government did not earmark any school for isolation centre but it had inaugurated two more testing centres as part of efforts to intensify COVID-19 testing in the state.

Kiru said in a release that the two testing centres were inaugurated by the state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Independence Road, Bompai, Kano, on Thursday.

In Oyo, the state government said rather than convert schools to isolation centres, it planned to partner hotels to be converted into isolation centres.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr Taiwo Adisa, said, “We are not converting schools into isolation centres in Oyo State. What we are doing is to partner hotels and other well-meaning persons to raise capacity.

“Some medical centres are also in the cards to serve as isolation centres. Officially, the state has isolation/observatory centres in Ogbomoso, Awe, and Igbo-Ora with treatment centres at the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo, Ibadan; Agbami Chest Hospital, Jericho, Ibadan; and Saki.”

Meanwhile, in Osun, the Special Adviser to the state Governor on Education, Mr Jamiu Olawumi, said the state had enough bed spaces to cope with its coronavirus cases.

In Katsina, the government said there was no indication it would allocate schools or dormitories to serve as isolation centres for COVID-19 patients, saying it had begun moves to construct additional isolation centres to the existing four.

Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski breaks Aubameyang’s Bundesliga record

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski on Saturday broke the record previously held by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the most goals scored by a foreigner in a Bundesliga season.

Lewandowski scored twice in the first half against Freiburg to give him 33 league goals in 30 matches this season, having netted a total of 48 times in 41 games in all competitions.

The Poland striker’s tally beats the previous record of 31 goals set by Gabon striker Aubameyang in 2016/17 for Borussia Dortmund before he moved to present club Arsenal the following season.

With the Bundesliga season due to end next Saturday, Lewandowski is well short of Gerd Mueller’s remarkable all-time record for the most goals in a German league season when he scored 40 in 1971/72.

Bayern are already confirmed as Bundesliga champions for the eighth consecutive season and are on course to repeat their 2013 treble.

They face Leverkusen in the German Cup final on July 4 and are among the favourites for the Champions League, which resumes in August with Lewandowski as the top scorer in Europe with 11 goals in six games.

Bayern routed Chelsea 3-0 in London in the last 16, first leg last March until the Champions League ground to a halt due to the coronavirus.

Lai Mohammed's Son Harassed At Oniru Event By Policemen

The phrase ‘nobody is above the law’ rubbed off wrongly to Folajimi Lai-Mohammed, a member of Lagos State House of Assembly, recently at the presentation of staff of office to Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, the 15th Oniru of Iruland, in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State. But in this case, it seems the police went too far.

Some say that the member of the Lagos State House of Assembly wasn’t recognised by police officers who were carrying out the directives of Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu in enforcing the social distancing rule.

The security operatives harassed Folajimi and almost forcefully took him out of the venue. But for the intervention of some top government officials, things could have gotten out of control.

The legislator felt embarrassed and was moody all through the ceremony – although friends tried to cheer him up. He was more furious that the CP, who also attended the ceremony and was in the know of what happened, didn’t show signs of regret or apologise for what his men did to him.

Health minister arrested over $60m COVID-19 fraud

Zimbabwean Health and Child Care Minister Obadiah Moyo has been arrested over the alleged irregular purchase of $60million COVID-19 medical supplies.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) confirmed the arrest of the minister Friday night.

“I can confirm that Minister Moyo is currently detained at Rhodesville Police Station and will likely appear in court today,” ZACC spokesperson Commissioner John Makamure said.

According to Makamure, the minister was arrested over shady procurement deals worth $60 million.

Moyo became the second minister to be arrested for alleged corruption in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government.

Last year, then tourism minister Prisca Mupfumira was also arrested.

10 missing as boat capsizes in Indonesia

Ten people were missing after a boat carrying 16 fishermen capsized in Indonesian waters near the Anak Krakatau volcano, officials said Saturday.

Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said the motorboat sank on Thursday after being hit by strong waves in the Sunda strait.

“Six were rescued alive on Friday and we continue searching for the 10 people still missing today,” Indonesia’s search and rescue agency spokesman Muhammad Yusuf Latif told AFP on Saturday.

The group had attempted to swim to nearby Rakata island, he added.

“Six returned to the capsized boat and they were rescued. But the other 10 continued swimming and their whereabouts remain unknown,” Latif said.

Rescue teams expanded their search for survivors on Saturday.

Boat accidents are common in Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago of around 17,000 islands, due to lax safety standards.

In January, 10 people went missing after a boat carrying 20 migrant workers to neighbouring Malaysia capsized off the coast of Sumatra island.
