Service Chiefs Can Go, Nigerians Are Dying - Senate President

Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Sunday said any officer found short of expectations should be shown the way out if he refuses to go.

Lawan, who briefed State House reporters after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the National Assembly was ready to receive supplementary budget to tackle the security challenge, including the recruitment of more personnel in various security agencies in the country.

He said the resources must be provided to empower the security agencies to fight the Boko Haram in the North East, banditry and other security challenges across the country.

Lawan, who said the security situation in the country especially in the northern part of the country required that more resources be given to the security agencies, added that the heads of these agencies especially the service chiefs, must sit up and address the issues within timeline.

“We can’t just go on without any time frame for dealing with these issues,” he added. Lawan said: “You know the country is facing very deep and serious security challenges and I have come to discuss with Mr. president what we discussed previously that we should do whatever it takes to improve the security situation in the country.

“And we believe that the senate and indeed the National Assembly is positively disposed to receiving even supplementary budget purposely to address the fundamental needs of the security agencies of our country so that we are able to empower them, enable them to fight the Boko Haram in the North East, banditry and other security challenges across the country.

“Secondly, in the senate, we believe we need to provide more resources for recruitment by the security agencies: Army, the Navy, Air Force, Police, immigration, the paramilitary generally. “We need to have more manpower or personnel and this is not something you get on platter of gold. “Whoever wants to make an omelette will break an egg.

“Section 14 subsection 2b of the constitution of the Federal Republic Nigeria is very categorical and crystal clear, that the purpose of government shall be to provide for security and welfare of the people. “Therefore, we must, we have no luxury of any option other than to address the security challenges more than any other thing.

“We provided for N500 billion intervention for COVID for the revised budget, and various agencies, the CBN, the NNPC and the IOCs provided for palliatives and some kind of interventions for the COVID challenge. “I think we must tell ourselves the truth, that the security situation in the country especially in the northern part of the country, require that we give much more resources to the security agencies.

“And those who are heading these agencies especially the service chiefs, must sit up, in fact we must have milestones and timelines on how we are going to deal with this. We can’t just go on without any time frame for dealing with these issues.

“If after we provide some support and someone is found short of expectations, he should be shown the way out if he refuses to go. Because the lives of Nigerians are so precious and therefore must be more important than any other considerations or sentiments."

I pray your child will not be used as a tool against you, Tonto Dikeh's ex-husband, Churchill writes on father's day

Tonto Dikeh's ex-husband, Churchill Olakunle has wished himself a happy father's day as the world celebrated father's yesterday. Taking to his Instagram page to pray for all fathers. Churchill prayed no one's child or children will be used as a tool against them.

He also prayed women will change and follow the new era of using a child as a tool when relationships break. He wrote;

''Happy Fathers' Day to all the fathers in the world. A father is a father irrespective of marital challenges.

A father is not only by way of giving birth to a child; but by way of taking caring of children around you, and children around the world who are in need.

I pray for all the fathers in the world that your child/children will not be used as a tool of jealousy, because of broken relationships like it's done in the old Era.

As I celebrate this day, I pray this won't be the era when single parenting ends up affecting a child/ children’s mentality thereby confusing them.

This is a new Era and things have changed. Relax, you'll reconnect with your child at the right time.

You Are A father!

We Are Fathers!! I Am A Father!!! Happy Father's Day To You!''

Tonto Dikeh had also written this, while wishing herself a happy father's day;

''Happy Fathers Day TO ME BECAUSE I’VE DONE IT ALL BY MYSELF AND ACED IT ANYWAYS.. Actions prove who someone is.. Words just prove who they want to be...DEAREST SON @kingandre_dikeh, BEING YOUR DAD HAS BEEN A GREAT HONOR..

The Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS) has arrested two Indians who illegally entered the country without proper documentation in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lagos Airport Command, NIS, Comptroller Mr Abdullahi Usman made this known in a statement by the Public Relations Officer, Mr James Sunday in Lagos on Sunday.

Usman noted that the Indians were both males and were intercepted during the screening of Indian nationals that were being evacuated from Nigeria through MMIA on Saturday.

“While profiling the men, it was discovered that they entered Nigeria through the land border and had visa on arrival application approval which they failed to present to the immigration officials at the border.

“The men had been in Cotonou, Benin Republic for a month and had the stamp of that country dated Feb. 9, 2020 when they left and entered Nigeria illegally.

“They did not present themselves for immigration checks at the border, and the two are 32 and 29 years old will be prosecuted according to the Nigeria Immigration laws as a deterrence to others,” he said.

Usman said 446 India nationals were evacuated from the country on Saturday, as part of the ongoing evacuation of foreign nationals due to COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the NIS Comptroller General, Mr Muhammad Babandede, had warned migrants to desist from breaking the Immigration laws of countries of transit or destination.

Usman said this was to avoid sanctions that may result into stopping them from coming to Nigeria or payment of fees chargeable.

He said that the fees depended on the gravity of the offence committed and what the law stipulated for such.

19-year-old footballer who moved to America on a scholarship dies within week of discovering cancer

A 19-year-old footballer who moved to America on a scholarship has died just a few weeks after discovering he had blood cancer.

Joe Aspinall, who attended Coastal Bend College in Texas, passed away on June 10 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The teenager's devastated parents have paid tribute to their 'fit and healthy' son, who had returned from Texas to Highburton, West Yorkshire, at the start of the coronavirus crisis.

His father Brendan, a former professional footballer who played for Mansfield Town and Coleraine, wrote an emotional tribute that was released by a family friend.

He said: 'Our fantastic 19-year-old fit and healthy son Joseph passed away on June 10 in intensive care at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

'He had been studying a soccer scholarship at Coastal Bend College in Texas until we brought him home at the start of lockdown.

'He became unwell in early May and was admitted to hospital on the 25th.

'Following initial tests they found he had a haematological malignancy (blood cancer) that caused blood clots in his spleen and fatally, his lungs.

'He was taken to intensive care on June 5 and despite a very brave fight and always remaining calm, he sadly couldn't prevent the clots causing his heart and lungs to be unable to cope.

'He was comforted at the end by his parents, sister and brother.

'We have had hundreds of messages from people whose lives he had touched. His school friends, football and cricket teammates, work friends and his recent American college friends.

'We are a private family and are so proud of Joseph and following all the messages of support have realised what a special part of so many lives he was and we will get strength from this.

'One of his school friends, Charlotte and two of his close cousins Ella and Billy have wanted to show their respects by doing fundraising events and we find these efforts amazing and very thoughtful.

'We are in shock and devastated by the past fortnight's events butmwould like to thank the staff at HRI and the support of family thatmhas helped us through.'

More than £6,500 has been raised for the family by Joe's former Shelley College classmate, Charlotte Oldroyd.

Buhari May Sack, Detain EFCC Chairman Over Missing Recovered Billions

Barring last minute reprieve, Ibrahim Magu, acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), may not only be on his way out of office, but also may be looking towards days of accounting for alleged infractions preferred against him by Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.

Presidency sources disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari had given Malami approval to investigate and prosecute Magu following his memorandum, where he itemised 22 weighty allegations against the EFCC chairman, who has occupied the office for nearly five years in acting capacity.

The sources said the EFCC chairman will temporarily hand over the anti-graft agency to the next most senior person, Mohammed Umar Abba, Director of Operations of the agency.

Malami had also included a short list of three candidates for consideration to replace Magu. Our sources said FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, may ultimately replace him, being the most favoured among the three names Malami submitted to the president.

One of the sources told Daily Independent that the president wanted the panel to investigate the authenticity of the property and proxy allegations against Magu, noting that “because of the weight of the allegations, and the kind of person managing the EFCC, the president wouldn’t want to take any decision in a hurry. So he made sure a crack team is assembled to look into the matter holistically.”

According to him, Ayo Salami, former President of Court of Appeal, is heading the panel with the offices of National Security Adviser (NSA); Director General, Department of State Services (DSS); Director General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Police, and Attorney General of the Federation as members.

According to the source, the panel has two weeks to submit its report to the president, but had already done a week.

Malami, had in his memorandum to the president, made allegations bordering on financial malfeasances in failure to declare actual money recovered from looters. He also accused Magu of gross insubordination, refusing directives from the commission’s supervisory ministry; and as a result, the Federal Government has come under severe attack and embarrassment on account of odium stemming from poorly pursued investigations.

The AGF’s memo made strong innuendos purporting that Magu has made himself a willing tool in the hands of politicians thereby reducing the sterling reputation EFCC once enjoyed.

Sources at the presidency insisted on Friday that Buhari has indeed signed off on the memo only awaiting implementation.

“By the recommendation, Magu should be eased out of office, and prosecuted on the strength of the allegations made against him,” explained a presidency source to the newspaper, who said the president was livid after reading the memo.

Adding further, the sources said that had the matter rested squarely on just Malami’s memo, maybe a form of reprieve could have been worked out for the commission’s chairman.

“Malami was extensively debriefed on the matter. Security agencies were also involved in the matter and they all came back with damning verdicts,” the source added.

So far, the presidency has refused to say much on the matter.

In a text message response by Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, asking for confirmation on whether Magu will be eased out, the presidential spokesman simply said, “I don’t know the answer to your question.”

Several attempts at reaching Dele Oyewale, Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, yielded no result as his phones continued ringing without the calls being picked up. However, another source within the commission told the newspaper that there cannot be any official response from EFCC unless matters are directed at them.

But as also learnt, Magu is said not to be leaving anything to chance. It was learnt that some of his backers with link at the Presidential Villa have been putting in words for the embattled anti-graft’s czar, telling Mr. President that Magu is being hounded by corrupt politicians.

COVID-19: Churches in Oyo state reopen after three months

Churches in Oyo State have reopened after three months of closure due to the ban placed on religious gatherings by the government.

You would recall that the state government had in March, placed a ban on religious gathering as part of measures to curb the spreading of the novel coronavirus disease.

The government, however, announced recently that churches and mosques in the state could reopen with some guidelines.

It directed that religious centres must operate, at not more than 25 per cent capacity, while wearing facemasks throughout the service among other measures.

The NAN correspondent, who visited some churches including the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Winners Chapel among others on Sunday in Ibadan, observed that the churches maintained the guidelines set by the government.

It was observed that there were buckets of running water and liquid soaps placed at entry points for members to wash their hands before and after the service.

Some of the churches had earlier fumigated their environments while all members were sighted putting on face masks as sitting arrangements gave room for social distancing.

Some of the churches held multiple numbers of services so as to allow social distancing while thermometers were used to check members’ temperature before they entered the church.

Also, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman in Oyo state, Apostle Joshua Akinyemiju, urged churches to maintain the guidelines set by the government.

“While appreciating the governor for allowing churches to worship, Christians must endeavour to abide by all the government’s guidelines to that effect.

“We should remember that the Bible enjoins us in Hebrew 13:17, to obey those that have the rule over us.

“Now that government has lifted ban on religious centres with conditions attached, it behoves us, as religious leaders, to ensure absolute compliance to protect government from being blamed for its leniency,’’ Akinyemiju said.

Also, the Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Jesus Assembly Parish, Ibadan, Pastor Vincent Ajiboye, thanked God and the government for the opportunity to reopen churches.

“It’s good really to open in phases because of all we have gone through.

“Our church is open and to the glory of God we are fully prepared.

“May the lord see us through in Jesus name, amen,’’ Ajiboye prayed.

A Christian faithful, Mr Ademola Ilori, expressed gratitude to God for giving him and family the grace and opportunity to worship again.

“We thank the government also for this, but we will appreciate them to increase the time/hours given for churches to operate, so as to enable us express our profound gratitude and service to God,’’ he said.
