One in three pilots in Pakistan are flying with fake licenses, investigation reveals

A third of all pilots in Pakistan are flying with fake licences after paying people to sit their exam for them, it has been revealed.

Ghulam Sargar Khan, the country's aviation minister, announced the shocking find amid a probe into the Karachi plane crash which killed 97 people in May.

Out of 860 pilots currently licenced in Pakistan, investigators identified 262 who 'did not take the exam themselves' and 'don't have flying experience', he said.

Pakistan International Airlines, the airline which operated the crashed plane, has today grounded 150 of its pilots who are suspected of having cheated their way through their exam.

Abdullah Hafeez, a spokesman for Pakistan International Airlines, said the airline is now in the process of sacking the pilots.

'We will make it sure that unqualified pilots never fly aircraft again,' he said.

Khan made the revelation about licences while presenting preliminary findings to parliament of a probe into the Airbus A320 crash last month.

Pakistan Airlines flight 8303 flight from Lahore crashed as it attempted to land in Karachi on May 22.

The pilots had aborted one landing and were going around for a second attempt when the aircraft dropped into a residential area, killing 97 of the 99 on board.

Announcing the results of a preliminary investigation Wednesday, Khan said 'overconfident' pilot Sajjad Gull had attempted to land with the wheels up.

He said Gull and his copilot were 'distracted' and talking about coronavirus during the botched landing.

'The [virus] was on their minds. Their families were affected and they were having a discussion about it,' Khan said.

The pair had turned autopilot off and ignored repeated warnings from air traffic control that they were descending too fast and from too great an altitude.

Previous analysis of black box recordings also suggest Gull ignored alarms that were sounding in the cockpit as he made the failed landing.

Air traffic control saw the plane's engines scrape the runway, leaving them damaged, but did not warn the pilot before the plane pulled back into the sky, Khan said.

Both engines then failed, causing the crash.

The report found that the aircraft itself was '100 percent fit for flying', despite being grounded for 46 days prior amid coronavirus lockdown.

The Sun and Johnny Depp lawsuits get dirtier as paper reveals more dirt on him... he does 'cocaine and ecstasy' too

Johnny Depp sent texts to his personal assistant apparently ordering him to buy cocaine and ecstasy, the High Court has heard.

The texts were among a string the Pirates of the Caribbean star failed to reveal in his ongoing legal action against The Sun -- breaching a court order to disclose relevant evidence.

In one message he wrote: “Need more whitey stuff ASAP brotherman -- and the e-business!!!

“Please I’m in a bad bad shape. Say NOTHING to NOBODY!!!!”

Depp, 57, is suing The Sun for libel over an article that referred to him as “a wife beater”.

The Sun’s lawyers say the texts cast doubt on the actor’s insistence he did not take drugs prior to an argument with then-wife Amber Heard, during which she says he attacked her. Depp denies violence.

The texts were exchanged between Depp and assistant Nathan Holmes between February 25 and March 7, 2015 — just before the alleged attack.

It is suggested Depp was trying to obtain ecstasy pills and cocaine while drinking heavily.

In one exchange, Depp seemingly admonishes Holmes for failing to get him more drugs.

His message reads: “F****** give me the goddam numbers. I’ll take care of this s***!!!

“I’m a grown man and I will NOT BE JUDGED. AND I WILL NEVER EVER LIVE IN THIS WORLD CAGE ANY LONGER.”

Other messages refer to “happy pills” and wanting to be “ecstatic again”.

It is believed the texts were sent while Depp was in Australia filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge.

Depp’s case could now be thrown out after Mr Justice Nicol ruled he did breach the disclosure of evidence order by not revealing the texts.

Adam Wolanski QC, representing The Sun, said Depp’s behaviour showed he had “forfeited the right” to pursue his case in court.

He added: “He has demonstrated contempt for our courts and for your Lordship. The absence of any contrition from him or an apology, demonstrates a breathtaking arrogance.

“This directly demonstrates that he is not telling the truth on an important matter at the heart of this case.

“If this evidence was missed, what else has been missed?”

Mr Wolanski said Depp’s failure to disclose meant The Sun would have been denied a fair hearing.

Depp accepts the evidence should have been disclosed.

But his lawyers told the court the failure was due to a mistaken understanding of what was relevant and the case should continue.

Depp’s lawyers also denied he had “threatened and intimidated” Aquaman star Ms Heard, 34, in an attempt to stop her helping The Sun’s case.

The actress is due to give evidence for The Sun.

The allegations of violence were in an article by Sun executive editor Dan Wootton, who is also being sued by Depp.

The Sun’s publisher, News Group Newspapers, has applied to have the case kicked out after Depp’s texts were revealed in a US libel case.

Federal Government slashes fees for conduct of marriages

The Federal Government has slashed the fees chargeable for services related to conduct of statutory marriage in the country.

It said the review of the fees, which come under the Marriage Act CAP M6 LFN 2004, would commence from Wednesday, 1st July.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, made the disclosure in a public notice by the Permanent Secretary and Principal Registrar of Marriages in Nigeria, Georgina Ehuriah.

A statement from the Director of press in the ministry, Mohammed Manga, quoted the Minister as saying that the adjustment was an off-shoot of the recommendations made by stakeholders at the Sensitization Conferences held across the country in the third quarter of 2019.

According to him, the fees chargeable for the Issuance of Fresh Marriage Licence to a place of Public Worship has been reduced from N30,000 for two (2) years to N6,000 yearly, payable for five years in the first instance.

For the renewal of marriage licence by a place of public worship, N5,000 has been approved per year, payable for three (3) years at each instance, as against the N30,000 earlier charged annually, he said.

The fees chargeable for statutory ordinary marriage has also been cut down from N21,000 to N15,000 while that of statutory special licence has been slashed from N35,000 to N25,000.

Aregbesola noted a link has been created on the ministry’s website; (https://ift.tt/333Un9S) to enable states and local governments access the Ministry’s automation platform for services relating to the conduct of Statutory Marriage in the country.

The Minister called on stakeholders to take advantage of the reduction in fees to licence their places of public worship and continue to celebrate statutory marriage as specified by the Law.

Ondo Deputy Governor disowns campaign posters

Ondo State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, has dissociated himself from posters carrying his photograph, campaigning for governorship under the platform of the Social Democratic Party.

His posters in SDP had flooded the social media lately.

Ajayi, who recently joined the Peoples Democratic Party, said he remained loyal to the party and did not have any link with any other party.

Speaking through his media, Allen Sowore, the deputy governor said the matter was the handiwork of mischief makers, who had tried unsuccessfully to pitch him with the leadership of the PDP.

He said, “The purveyor of this fake news are well known to the public. We would not have responded to this fake and unsubstantiated story if not for unsuspecting members of the public.

“There was no time the deputy governor addressed the press after his official declaration for the PDP on Monday 22nd June, 2020.”

The deputy governor urged the public to disregard the posters, saying, “It is understandable that it will take a very long time for the All Progressives Congress, to recover from the whammy which the defection has caused.”

India bans TikTok, 50 Chinese-made apps

The Indian government has banned TikTok, the hugely popular social media app, as part of sweeping anti-China measures after a violent confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops.

TikTok is one of more than 50 Chinese-made apps that have been banned by the Ministry of Information over concerns that they “pose a threat to sovereignty and security” of India.

While the government notice issuing the ban did not explicitly mention China by name, it is only Chinese-made apps that have been blacklisted. It comes after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the confrontation with Chinese troops along their disputed Himalayan border.

India has accused China of infringing on national sovereignty by moving thousands of troops and artillery, as well as building infrastructure, into disputed territory in Ladakh. The clash two weeks ago was the worst conflict between India and China in 60 years, and despite pledges on both sides to de-escalate, recent satellite footage appears to show China solidifying their presence along the poorly defined border.

The decision to ban TikTok, an app where people upload short videos, is likely to cause reverberations through India, where it has more than 200 million users and is the most downloaded app in the country. It has become a central part of popular culture in India, with some TikTok celebrities boasting tens of million of followers.

The Indian government said the decision to ban the apps was in order to protect the data and privacy of its 1.3 billion citizens and put a stop to technology that was “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers outside India”.

Since the buildup of Chinese troops and violent clash at the border, there have been growing calls for a boycott of Chinese goods and investment.

The government has already announced plans to impose higher trade barriers and raise import duties on about 300 products from China, as well as ban Chinese companies from bidding on telecom projects in India. The Delhi Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association, which represents more than 3,000 establishments in the capital, has also recently banned all Chinese nationals from their hotels and restaurants.

Baby girl has FULL head of hair before she was EVEN born

At her 34-week scan, Alexandra Jechorek was shocked to realise her baby girl had a full head of hair before she was even born.

Her locks were so thick, they could be seen clearly on the screen while she was still in her mum’s womb.

And when she was born six weeks later, baby Maya had a glossy mane and her parnets office worker boyfriend, Lee Bond, 23 – stay-at-home mum Alexandra, 21, were amazed. Alexandra, of Dublin, Ireland, said: ‘We’d already found out we were expecting a girl at the previous scan, so at 34 weeks, we were just excited to see how much she’d grown.

‘When the midwife turned the screen around, I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes. ‘There was this tiny little baby on the scan with a full head of hair.

I just thought, “No way, this cannot be possible”. ‘To be completely honest, I thought all babies were born bald. My oldest Kadin came out bald, so I just thought that was how babies were when they were born.

‘But once I’d taken in how much hair she had, it made me all the more excited to meet her, as Maya already looked like a proper little person.’ On June 9, 2019 after a swift 90 minute labour, Maya was born at The Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital, in Dublin, weighing 8lbs 9oz – and her full head of dark hair caused quite a storm. Alexandra laughed: ‘As soon as Maya arrived, I couldn’t take my eyes off her hair.

‘I’d been expecting her to have hair because of the scan, but to see this beautiful baby with this thick jet black hair was incredible.

‘It had already grown so long it was down past her ears. ‘Even the nurses and the doctors turned to me and said they’d never seen a baby with so much hair in all the time they’d worked at the hospital!’ And from when she was born, her hair has always attracted attention. ‘We couldn’t leave the house without someone complimenting Maya on her hair,’ Alexandra said.

‘Lots of people would ask, “How old is she?” They were shocked when I told them she was only three months old with so much hair!’ While Alexandra has never measured her daughter’s locks, she says that, now one years old, it is so long that it skims the top of her nappy, even though she’s just turned one.

She said: ‘I’ve never had her hair cut. I think it’s absolutely beautiful and I want her to grow it as long as she wants.’ Having such long hair means Maya has already been able to experiment with a host of different styles – which she shows off on her very own Instagram site, where she already has 300 followers.

‘Maya’s really good she always sits still and lets me do her hair,’ said Alexandra. ‘I do it in plaits and sometimes I tie it in a ponytail. ‘I love putting bow clips in her hair. I have different colours, like pink, blue, red and yellow, to match the different outfits that she wears.’ But it does mean Maya has quite a demanding beauty routine considering her age. ‘I shampoo and conditioner her hair every day,’ said Alexandra.

‘People love looking at pictures of Maya – they can’t get enough of her hair,’ she said. ‘I usually post pictures of her different hairstyles or of her playing with Kadin. ‘But the comments are always about how amazing Maya’s hair is.’

With no family history of babies with hair, Alexandra says Maya’s amazing mop is a complete fluke.

She said: ‘I’ve asked around my family and Lee’s to see if anyone else was born with hair like Maya’s, but everyone’s told me no, so it must’ve just been a fluke.

National Assembly stops electricity tariff hike

The leadership of the National Assembly on Monday convinced the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to defer the planned hike in electricity tariff till the first quarter of 2021.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan made this known in a statement on behalf of the leadership in Abuja.

The statement by Mr Ola Awoniyi, Special Adviser (Media) to Lawan said the lawmakers waded into the controversy due to the planned hike in electricity tariffs from July 1.

Lawan said that Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila and other principal officers of the two Chambers met with the Chief Executives of the government electricity regulatory body and DISCOs across the country.

“The National Assembly leaders were emphatic at the meeting that the timing of the planned hike is wrong, even though they had not much issue in introducing a cost reflective tariffs for the power sector to attract the much needed investment.

“The agreement here is that there is not going to be any increase in the tariffs on July 1. The speaker and I, we are going to take appropriate action and meet with President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We are in agreement here that there is no question on the justification of the increase but the time is simply not right and appropriate measures need to be put in place

“So, between now and the first quarter of next year, our task will be to work together to ensure that we put those blocks in place to support the eventual increase in tariffs,” he said.

Lawan said that government had been doing a lot as part of its obligations to provide some form of intervention.

“I’m quite aware that for this year, probably starting from last year, over N600 billion was earmarked for this sector to improve.

“The potential increase in the tariffs is definitely something that will be of concern to the National Assembly.

“There is too much stress in the lives of Nigerians and indeed across the world because of the challenges imposed by COVID-19 pandemic.

”Before then, we had issues that will always make it tough for people to effectively pay the tariffs.

“One way or the other, for this business to flourish, for this sector to be appropriately fixed, for it to attract investment, something has to give way.

”There is no doubt about that but it is also crucial that we look at the timing for any of our actions,” Lawan said.

Iceland President Johannesson re-elected with 92 percent of total votes

Iceland’s President Gudni Johannesson has been re-elected with a whopping 92 percent of the vote, according to final results released on Sunday.

The former history professor won his second four-year term in the largely symbolic position in Saturday’s vote, the second election held by a European country after coronavirus lockdowns were lifted.

Since suffering spectacular bank failures in 2008, the volcanic North Atlantic island of 365,000 inhabitants has recovered some economic and political stability, which worked in the 52-year-old independent’s favour.

The final results showed he took 92.2 percent of the 168,821 votes cast, crushing rightwing challenger Gudmundur Franklin Jonsson.

“I am honoured and proud,” the president told AFP in Reykjavik on election night.

“This result of this election is, to me, proof of the fact that my fellow Icelanders… have approved of how I have approached this office.”

The dominant win had been predicted by opinion polls, which had shown the president winning between 90 to 94 percent.
