Hushpuppi: Woodbery defrauded US firm of $15.3m stashed away in Bitcoin wallet — FBI

The Federal Bureau of Investigations, FBI, has filed a case alleging that Olalekan Jacob Ponle, who was arrested alongside Hushpuppi, defrauded US firms of millions.

Police authorities had earlier shared footage of how Hushpuppi and his 11 cronies were busted in a special operation over cyber-fraud involving 1.9 million victims to the tune of N168 billion.

Arrested on June 10, the suspects were said to have been involved in crimes spanning money laundering, hacking, impersonation, scamming, banking fraud, and identity theft.

Alongside Hushpuppi, Ponle, who is better known as Woodbery, had been expelled from the UAE to the US where he is to face charges of conspiracy to commit fraud, one for which he risks 20 years jail term.

In an affidavit filed on Woodbery’s case, the FBI said that part of the sum from the scams, which he pulled between January and September 2019, had been stashed away in a Bitcoin, BTC, wallet.

Bitcoin is a type of virtual currency not issued by any government, bank, or firm but is generated and controlled through computer software operating on a decentralised peer-to-peer network.

While BTC transactions are recorded in the Bitcoin blockchain, the identities of the individuals or entities are not recorded on the public ledger, making the platform partially anonymous.

FBI said Woodbery staged business email compromise, BEC, schemes targeting accounts through computer intrusion techniques to cause the unauthorised transfer of funds from victim companies.

Among these are schemes that caused a Chicago-based company to lose $2,300,000 while another firm was defrauded into transferring a total of $15,268,000, part of which was stashed away in BTC wallet.

The affidavit read: “Preliminary blockchain analysis indicates that Ponle received at least 1,494.71506296 bitcoin related to these BEC schemes, valued at approximately $6,599,499.98.

“These schemes resulted in attempted and actual losses to victim companies in the tens of millions. Ponle directed money mules in the US to open bank accounts in the names of victim companies.

“Proceeds from BEC schemes, ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars, were then wired by unwitting employees to the bank accounts opened by Ponle’s mules.

“Ponle then instructed the mules to convert the proceeds to Bitcoin and to send the proceeds of the BEC schemes to a bitcoin wallet that he owned and operated.”

Woodbery is expected to appear in court on July 9, for hearing on his detention.

Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone dead at 91

Ennio Morricone, one of the world’s best-known and most prolific film composers, died in Rome on Monday.

Morricone, who was 91, died in hospital where he was being treated for a fractured femur following a fall, media reports said, quoting a statement from a lawyer.

He composed the music for about 500 films, including his old schoolfriend Sergio Leone’s 1966 spaghetti western “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” for which he won an Oscar in 2016.

A statement issued by the lawyer and family friend Giorgio Assuma said Morricone “passed away in the early hours of July 6 with the comfort of his faith”.

He remained “fully lucid and with great dignity right until the end,” the statement said.

Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza wrote in a tweet: “Adieu maestro, and thank you for the emotions you gave us.”

Before winning the Oscar for best film score in 2016, the Rome-born son of a trumpeter had been nominated no fewer than five times before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — embarrassed that such a talent had not been recognised sooner — presented him with a lifetime achievement award in 2007.

Although he is most closely associated in the public mind with Leone’s westerns starring Clint Eastwood, Morricone’s composition for Roland Joffe’s Jesuit drama “The Mission” is considered by many critics to be his cinematic masterpiece, an epic and eclectic reflection of South America’s musical melting pot.

CSP Dolapo Badmus gives tips on how to spot scammers warns why Nigerians should never give in

CSP Dolapo Badmus has stated out tips on how to spot scammers and why Nigerians must never give him. She gave the tips on her instagram page thus;

''Please what’s Binono Business! From all indications scammers capitalize on greed to get you off your hard earned sweat! Whoever is offering you 500k on investment of 100k is definitely a scammer! Even Banks and other financial institutions won’t give you such turnover .......I remember how one of my friends introduced Ponzi or whatever scheme to me then, she told me I will have X2 of any amount I invest....I told my friend that my grandmother had warned me early enough that “Ole lo n so ogun di ogoji”. (Only a thief thinks of free money doubling) you can only work hard to get your money doubled, not just giving to someone and expect it in double! Odikwa risky!!!

''Upon all my advice to her not to invest, she went ahead and committed all her life savings of almost 5M to the scheme! You want to know what happened!? Your guess is as good as mine.... till now she hasn’t recovered! It’s better I have my hard earned money with me than to commit it to a doomed adventure... Let’s all be careful of money doublers so we don’t fall victim! Scammers are real!!!!''

We will soon publish names of those earning more than N330m as pension, Governor Uzodinma blows hot

Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodinma,  has said the names of those earning more than N330 million annually as pension will be published soon.

While speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Owerri, the state capital, he said some pensioners were receiving monies above their retirement salaries while others get outrageous amount that are unaccounted for.

The governor said he had set up the process of integrating Imo pensioners into the National Contributory Pensions Scheme.

“I’ll soon publish names of those who earn above N330m per annum as pension for Imo people to know,” he said.

“Government will no more make use of microfinance banks for payments of salaries and pensions because they are no clearing houses for BVN holders so that pensioners can be paid directly.

“Government has decided to automate all payments to enable it to migrate to the contributory pension’s scheme.”

With this in place, he said nobody would be able to defraud the government any longer after the biometric verification.

Teenager gang-r*ped by four men tests positive for COVID-19

It is triple jeopardy for Aishat as her journey to Lagos State for greener pastures has become a nightmare.

Punch Metro gathered that the 16-year-old was gang-r*ped by four men at a motor park in Ijesha, Surulere, where she was abandoned by her guardian.

The r*pe was said to have resulted in pregnancy, as the Oyo State indigene roamed the park for shelter.

She was reported to have slept in different shops until the pregnancy reached an advanced stage and she was referred to welfare workers.

Aishat was taken to the Mother and Child Care Centre, Gbaja, an arm of the Randle General Hospital, Surulere, where she was delivered of a baby through caesarean section.

Punch correspondent learnt that she was being prepared to be taken to a government home when the result of her COVID-19 test returned positive.

She was subsequently transferred to the Gbagada Isolation Centre.

Punch  Metro obtained a video of Aishat being interrogated by some women, who expressed worry that since she was delivered of the baby, she could not produce breast milk to feed her baby.

In the video, Aishat said, “I got pregnant through r*pe by four men. I gave birth at Gbaja. I stayed in the Ijesha motor park. I was r*ped there. I know the rapists. I gave birth through operation.”

The lady filming the video said, “Her breast is not bringing out milk. No food (for the baby). We have been here trying to help this girl. The baby was born through an operation; it’s a baby girl.”

Another woman at the isolation centre narrated how the victim was brought to Lagos from Saki, Oyo State, by a woman who “picked her from her parents when she was small.”

She stated, “The woman promised to hand her over to the person she would be working with. When they got to Lagos, the woman left her at the motor park and said she was coming.

“But the woman did not return. While she was roaming around, she slept in a bus, where she was gang-r*ped by four men. After being gang-raped, she had no place to go; she was still going round the motor park where she always saw the people who gang-r*ped her.

“She was sleeping inside shops during the time she was pregnant before she was taken to the Gbaja hospital.”

Punch Metro gathered that there was confusion at the Maternal and Child Care Centre, Gbaja, where she was delivered of the baby.

It was learnt that no fewer than 30 health workers were exposed to Aishat during delivery.

Further findings revealed that after tests were conducted, the workers were all mandated to continue working.

A medical worker in the know alleged that the Medical Director of the Randle General Hospital, Dr Aduke Odutayo, sneaked out Aishat after getting her test result.

The source stated, “The girl was originally directed to the hospital through the Ministry of Women Affairs, where her case was first reported.

“The ministry then informed the permanent secretary of the Health Service Commission. The permanent secretary later spoke to the Randle General Hospital MD, who gave instructions to the Head of Department, Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

“An emergency caesarean section was done on the girl without any personal protective equipment. That has been the status quo in the hospital since the beginning of the COVID-19; nobody has PPE.

“After delivery, she spent 10 days at the Maternal and Child Care Centre on admission, where various doctors and nurses attended to her.”

Another source noted that the plan was for Aishat to be taken to one of the shelters of the government, adding that the management of the centre insisted that a COVID-19 test be conducted on her first.

Punch Metro learnt that the result then returned positive.

The source added, “The MD, in collaboration with the HoD, sneaked her out of the hospital without the workers being aware of her COVID-19 status. That was how she got to the Gbagada Isolation Centre.

“The ambulance they used in conveying her was taken far away from the hospital. They used a private car to get her from the hospital to the COVID-19 ambulance.”

Punch correspondent was told that after the news of the incident spread, workers at the hospital, including theatre nurses, anaesthetists and doctors, who had contact with her became apprehensive.

It was gathered that eight of them tested positive.

The source added, “The same day they did their tests, they were asked to return to work even when they had not seen their results. They were threatened that they could lose their jobs if they did not return to work.

“The workers were aggrieved that the result of the girl was hidden from them. Those, who tested positive, have been asked to go to the isolation centre.”

The MD of Randle General Hospital, Odutayo, declined reaction on the incident.

The Ministry of Youth and Social Development, in a statement on Sunday, said it was working with officials of the Lagos State Health Management Agency to manage Aishat’s case.

The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Segun Dawodu, said both the mother and child would be placed in a shelter where care would be given to them after their discharge from the isolation centre.

He advised parents to always take good care of their children, especially the female folks, who were vulnerable to different vices in the society, especially at this time when rape was on the increase.

Dawodu asked parents to desist from handing over their children to strangers, who take them to cities and use them as housemaids, or for other unscrupulous purposes.

The acting General Manager, LASHMA, Dr Emmanuella Zamba, said the agency would enrol both the mother and child in any state government health facility closer to the residence provided for them by the government.

The Coordinator, Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said Aishat’s video was recorded by another COVID-19 patient at the isolation centre.

She noted that efforts were on to reunite her with trusted family members.

“The police have already commenced investigation into the s.e.xual violence allegation,” she stated.

Christians exhibiting reckless confidence in face of Coronavirus pandemic — SGF Boss Mustapha

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha has said that it is worrisome that some Christians exhibit reckless confidence in the face of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.

Mustapha who spoke at the Interdenominational Church Prayer Service, organised by the Nigeria Interreligious Council (NIREC) in Abuja on Sunday evening, said all Nigerians must realize that the pandemic has come to stay.

Particularly, the SGF called on Church leaders to be at the vanguard of enlightening their followers on the truth about the deadly virus and how they can stay safe in their families and communities.

Speaking about stay at home directive by various governments, Mustapha who doubles as the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, said: “If you have no business going out, stay at home, it is scriptural and I will undertone this with a quotation from Proverbs 14:16 where the bible says the Wise are cautious and avoid danger, fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence.

I see a lot of Christians exhibiting reckless confidence and the Bible describes them as fools. “Stay at home, if you don’t have business going out.

That is the safest place you have. If you have every genuine reason to go out, as mandatory, wear a face mask.

“My admonition to the church is that we must stop the exhibition of reckless confidence and tell our people the truth and ask them to do the proper things so that they can stay safe for their families, communities and for the body of Christ”.

Mustapha also stressed that the national response that the federal government has put in place was intended to protect the people of Nigeria.

The 34-year-old American model, who is married to singer John Legend, even wore sun cream but still managed to get quite burnt.

Taking to social media, the mum of two shared a sizzling topless mirror selfie as she showcased her rosy new colour.

Chrissy - whose cheeks were also rosy red - looked fresh faced as she ditched her glamorous makeup and hid her face behind her phone for the candid at-home shot.

Alongside the picture, that she shared with her 30.5 million followers, Chrissy tried to shut down any criticism from fans.

"Before you ask, I did!" she wrote, suggesting that she had used SPF protection against the sun.

The TV star's sun tanning blunder came just a few months after she revealed she was going under the knife to have her breast implants removed.

What Ajimobi's Family Did To Me At The Gate - Oyo Deputy Governor

Oyo State Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan, has said the family of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi was aware of his presence at their Ibadan residence to attend the eighth-day Fidau of their late father.

Olaniyan was denied access to the Oluyole Estate residence of the late governor on Sunday.

The late governor’s family through a statement by Bolaji Tunji, media aide to the late Senator Ajimobi, had said the family was not aware of the deputy governor’s plan to be present at the prayer.

But in another statement by Deputy Governor Olaniyan’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Omolere Omoetan, the deputy governor said the family was aware he was waiting at the gate.

The statement read, “Again, some members and aides of the former Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi continue to rebuff the hand of fellowship extended to the family of the late governor by the government of Oyo State led by His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde.

“Today at the 8th day Fidau Prayers of the former Governor Oyo State Isaika Ajimobi, the Deputy Governor, Engr Rauf Olaniyan, was denied access to the venue of the event.

“The Deputy Governor, who led the government delegation comprising himself and some commissioners, on the approval of the governor, was kept waiting at the gate for over 15 minutes. Even when security men at the gate went in to tell them he was at the gate, no directive came back to grant his Excellency access.

“At a point, the security personnel in uniform and mufti at the gates became very hostile and the ADC to the Deputy Governor was manhandled by men of the police force. It was at this point that the Deputy Governor decided to leave the scene that was becoming tense while waiting in his car.

“Having waited for a while to see if the situation would change to no avail, he proceeded to take his leave.

“It should be noted that the Deputy Governor put a call through to Alhaji Kunle Sanni, Chairman of Oyo State Muslim Council, who was among the officiating ministers, that he was at the gate and was being denied entrance. Alhaji Sanni responded that his hands were tied. This is clear indication that what transpired was premeditated.

“There was no truth in the family saying they were not aware that the state government delegation was at the gate because Mr Bolaji Tunji was severally called by men of Civil Defence at the gate.

“Even if the Deputy Governor arrived when the prayers had started, it is a well-known fact in Islam that when prayers are on-going and a male walks in, it’s an indication that the prayers have received Allah’s acceptance.

“However, Engr Rauf Olaniyan wishes to reiterate that the visit of the government delegation to the 8th day Fidau Prayers of His Excellency Senator Isaika Ajimobi was a clear demonstration on the part of His Excellency, Engr Seyi Makinde, that the late governor is held in high regard. He stated that it was only fitting for the state government to show respect to the late governor at the Fidau prayers held in his honour.

“The Deputy Governor also wishes to put it on record that despite the way he was treated by the Ajimobi family, which he refuses to hold personal, he has displayed maturity as required of the public office at this level. He holds no grudges and he will continue to pray that Allah grants the departed former Governor Al-Jana Firdaus.

“Engr. Rauf Olaniyan will also like to draw the attention of the Oyo state Commissioner of Police to the highly unprofessional and unruly conduct of the police personnel at the premises.”

Gov Akeredolu Still Battling COVID19, Assembly Moves To Impeach His Deputy

Following the running battle between the embattled Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi and his boss, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, all might have been concluded for the impeachment of Ajayi.

It was gathered that the impeachment proceedings against Ajayi might commence this Monday at the chamber of the Ondo State House of Assembly.

This was sequel to the sudden recall of the 26 lawmakers who had been on recess to immediately resume legislative duties at the Assembly, while the governor is still in isolation and should be concerned about his recovery.

The Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. Bode Adeyelu had in a short message sent to the legislators directed them to ensure compliance with the directive given by the Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun.

The message reads, “This is to inform all Honourable Members of the Ondo State House of Assembly that following the expiration of your RECESS on Friday, 3rd July, 2020, l have been directed by the Rt. Honourable Speaker Oleyelogun Bamidele David to enjoin you to resume for Legislative duties on Monday, 6th July, 2020.

“All Honourable members are to please treat this information as very important.”

According to an impeccable source among the legislators who craved anonymity, top on the agenda of what will be deliberated at the floor of the House will be the trending issues in the state, particularly the deputy governor’s saga.

The source told Daily Post that it is likely that the Assembly might initiate impeachment proceedings against Ajayi.

Recall that two weeks ago, Ajayi defected from the APC to the PDP to run for the governorship ticket of the party even as he insisted that he will not resign his position as deputy governor.

But Akeredolu over the weekend made a formal declaration foreclosing the consideration of handing over governance to Ajayi following his COVID-19 positive status, with the deputy governor giving his boss 21 days ultimatum to handover to him as acting governor.

Ajayi had accused his boss of doling out N10 million to entice each of the lawmakers in a bid to meet the requirement of two-third majority, that is about 18 out of the 26 lawmakers in the state in order for his planned impeachment to scale through.

Stray Bullets Hit 2 As Customs, Petrol Smugglers Clash

Two youngsters have been hit by stray bullets during a confrontation between customs men and petrol smugglers at Seme border in Lagos State.

The two boys – Hunsu Taiwo, 12, and Ganjo Henry, 10, were playing in Sokenu Compound of Seme when they were hit by customs bullets on Friday.

The injured victims, however, survived after receiving treatment at the Customs clinic at Seme border.

Confirming the incident, Customs Spokesman in Seme, Hussaini Abdullahi, said the two boys were hit by stray bullets at the back and ankle.

According to NAN, Abdullahi said that the incident happened during a confrontation with smugglers who were trying to smuggle petrol to the neighbouring Benin Republic.

“On Friday, July 3, at about 5 p.m, a joint patrol team of command, based on credible intelligence went on an operation along with Seme Carpenter village and identified a hideout used by some unpatriotic elements to stockpile petrol for onward smuggling to the Benin Republic.

“In an effort to evacuate the said item from the scene, some unscrupulous elements launched a vicious attack and aggressively advanced towards the scene of the seizure with assorted dangerous weapons with a desirous effort to set the place ablaze.

“Considering the volatility of the seized items and the fact that all efforts short of using force to halt the mob from advancing towards the scene proved abortive, officers were left with no option than to use their firearms in order to defend themselves and avoid the envisaged catastrophe.

“However, verifiable information later received indicated that two young innocent boys were injured by stray bullets at back and ankle,” he said.

The customs spokesman said the boys were rushed to Customs clinic for proper medical intervention and fortunately the result came out with no major damages.

“This gave room for prompt treatment of the patients at Customs facility and were consequently discharged strictly based on medical advice.

“On this note, the command wishes to register its unreserved displeasure with this unfortunate incident.

“As a responsible and responsive service, we are working round the clock to partner with the family by providing all the necessary support to cushion the effect of this tragedy,” he said.
