A Brazilian man may be the first person to be "cured" of HIV after receiving an intensive experimental drug therapy.
The 34-year-old, who was diagnosed with HIV in 2012, is the first person to maintain long-term HIV remission after being given a year-long course of intensive anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs. The man received the treatment alongside four other patients but was the only one to have been “cured”.
The researchers, who unveiled their findings at this week’s virtual International Aids Society conference, warn that further analysis is needed.
The patient - only the third person ever to have been "cured of the disease" - was put on standard ARV treatment two months after his diagnosis and then enrolled on a clinical trial where he received standard ARTs as well as the HIV drugs dolutegravir and marivoc. He was also given nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B.
Nicotinamide fights part of the virus that infects cells and causes them to self destruct as well as activating the immune system.
The patient received the intensive therapy for a year and then was taken off treatment in March 2019. Since then he has been tested every three weeks and a year later he still has no detectable viral load or any antibodies.
Professor Sharon Lewin, an HIV and infectious diseases expert at the University of Melbourne who was not involved in the research, said the fact that the patient has no antibodies was significant.
“When someone is infected with a virus they make antibodies. And antibodies don’t budge, even when you’re on treatment and there’s no detectable viral load. But this showed he had no antibodies which is supportive of him being cured,” she said.
However, she added that it was important to remember that this was just one patient and the findings were being published as a case report rather than a full academic paper.
“It’s interesting, but it’s hard to know how significant it is when it’s just a single case. I’d also like to know what happened to the other patients,” she said.
Dr Ricardo Diaz of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, who led the study, said he was "trying to wake up the virus" and boost the immune system's ability to eliminate it once it's flushed out of hiding.
"We can't search the entire body, but by the best evidence, we do not have infected cells," Dr Diaz said.
"I think it's very promising. This patient might be cured," but it will take more time to know, he added.
The man was diagnosed with HIV in October 2012 and was then put on treatment just two months later. Patients who go on treatment soon after acquiring HIV can quickly bring their virus under control, said Prof Lewin.
“So it’s hard to work out whether this person had the virus under control because we don't know when he acquired HIV or whether the addition of extra ARVs and nicotinamide made a difference,” she said.

A Nigerian business lady has called out Zenith Bank accusing them of not working hard enough to ‘protect’ her. The lady who runs the instagram page _tamaluxy says she sent her house help on an errand to make use of her ATM card, but unfortunately she was swindled on the way.
She said shortly after, she contacted the police and they wanted details of the account the money was wired into but Zenith bank has not been helpful in this regard. She is now calling them out saying the bank needs to protect her and give her the much needed info as she has made available all the bank requested from her. She wrote;
''#857,000 was stolen from my account by unauthorized persons via POS transactions and @zenithbankplc has refuse to act. Continue...
On July 2nd, I sent my househelp to GIG at Abraham Adesanya, Ajah. On her way there a guy approached her to ask for directions. She didn’t know the place, then another guy came claiming he does. She left them and took a bus which they also joined. On getting to their bus stop they asked her to come down which she did. They started asking her for her phone and atm password which she gave to them. At this time they were 4 including a man that was dressed like an herbalist. They sent her back to my house to bring her own atm card because she had already told them she works for someone.
I was out at the time and my battery had died. When I got home I turned on my phone and starting receiving debit alerts. Immediately I called my account officer to block my card. I called my househelp to find out what was going on, and a guy picked up her phone. I went to gig to show them her picture, and they said they haven’t seen her. I went to the bank to file a complaint. On my way to the police station one of the police officers at gig said she was there. I went there immediately and she explained everything that happened. I took her to the police station and she was interrogated. They made me understand that its very common for these things to happen in Lagos. Apparently they used juju (hypnotized) on her. The people that did this are popularly called “one chance”.
I have been to @zenithbankplc several times since this incident and they keep saying they’re doing investigations.
I don’t understand why @zenithbankplc has refuse to act on this issue. They’re meant to protect their customers, but it seems they’re enabling fraudsters. @zenithbankplc can easily release the information on the receiving account to the police for investigations, but they have refused and it’s been over 4 days. I have provided all the documents they asked for. I’m calling on @zenithbankplc to do something fast. I worked hard for this money. I might have made a mistake giving out my card, but that doesn’t make it okay for my money to be stolen by fraudsters. #857,000 is a lot.''
The Senate today urged the Federal government in its resolution to name the Ibadan Airport after the former governor of Oyo State, late Abiola Ajimobi who died on 25th of June, 2020.
The former governor of Oyo state was also a principal officer in the Senate where he served as a minority leader between 2003 – 2007.
The resolution of the Senate followed a motion by the Senator Buhari Abdulfatai (Oyo North) APC, who described the governor as a jinx breaker for returning for the second time as a governor, which was the first time in the political history of Oyo State that a serving governor got a second term.
The Senate also resolved that a high powered delegation will be constituted to visit the family to commiserate with them and the people of Oyo state for the loss of the former governor who served his state for eight years.
The Senate in its resolution on the motion also paid its last respect to the late Senator Ajimobi as it observed a minute silence for the former minority leader of the Senate.
Supporting the motion, Senator Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun Central) APC, said the late Senator Ajimobi was a hardworking governor and lover of his people.
He recalled that he was a man of peace and full of humour as he usually will keep all in his company laughing with jokes and banters.
Ajimobi was appointed Acting Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress amidst its crisis that was finally resolved by the dissolution of the NWC by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party, he could have resumed the office before his death.

This was confirmed by a joint statement signed by Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and Professor Kwasi Opoku-Agyemang, Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Thus the school has recorded eight COVID-19 cases as of Monday, July 6, 2020.
The statement said, “The Ghana Education Service (GES) received reports of suspected cases of COVID-19 from some second cycle institutions including Accra Girls Senior High school. The Ghana Health Service was subsequently notified of the situation.
“As of 6 July 2020, six students, a teacher and spouse have been confirmed as positive for COVID-19 in Accra Girls Senior High School.”

They have, therefore, assured the general public and all parents that, in accordance with the laid down protocols on the COVID-19 pandemic that have been issued to all schools, the necessary steps have been taken and the six confirmed students, the teacher and Spouse have been taken to a treatment centre for further management and are currently doing well.

The disinfection of schools against the spread of COVID-19 in preparation for the resumption of class activities will begin on Tuesday, the Federal Government announced on Monday.
It also explained why it delayed the decontamination process, adding that it had enough teams on ground to carry out the disinfection exercise.
The Minister of Environment, Muhammad Mahmood, disclosed this in Abuja at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
He said, “Earlier I told you that we have sat with the Ministry of Education and we have the list of all the schools that need to be disinfected before resumption. Well, what we plan to do now is to do (decontaminate) the centres that will be used.”
On why the process was delayed, the minister said it was intentional, as the plan was to ensure that the chemicals were effective enough when the schools resume.
Mahmood said, “The delay is because it is better to disinfect and decontaminate within a short period of time so that the kids will be going back into these classes when they have been freshly decontaminated.
“This is because the chemicals we use are chemicals that are not long lasting, they have short contact time to do their job. So we will be getting this done before Monday when they (schoolchildren) will be back to use these classes.”
The minister said the decontamination would commence from Tuesday and assured parents that the schools would be safe for learning activities.
“So it is between tomorrow (Tuesday) and the rest of the week. We have enough teams and people that we will engage to get that done. So rest assured that your kids will be returning to a safe environment when they resume,” he said.
Mahmood noted that the decontamination exercise would be done across the country.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned social media influencer and comedian, Adedamola Adewale Rukayat (a.k.a Adeherself) before Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Special Offence Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos on a one-count charge of possession of fraudulent documents.
Adeherself was arrested last month following intelligence received by the Commission on the activities of some young men allegedly involved in internet fraud in the Lekki axis of Lagos State.
During interrogation, Adewale aka “Adeherself” reportedly confessed to being a picker” in cybercrimes.
The count read: “That you, Adewale Adedamola Rukayat, on or about the 15th day of June 2020 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, with intent to defraud, had in your possession documents titled “WhatsApp”, which representations you knew or ought to have known, was false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 6 (8) (b) and 1 (3) (d) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.
She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In view of her plea, prosecution counsel, S.O. Daji asked the court for a trial date and also prayed that she be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCS.
The defence counsel informed the court of a bail application for his client and also prayed for a short date to enable its hearing.
Justice Solebo adjourned the matter to July 13, 2020, for the hearing of the bail application and also ordered the defendant to be remanded in the EFCC custody.
Cross River, the only state in Nigeria not to have recorded any case of Coronavirus since the outbreak of the pandemic, has now recorded first cases of the deadly virus.
With this, all 36 states of Nigeria and the FCT have recorded cases of Coronavirus.
In the figures released by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, on Monday night, Cross River recorded five cases of the virus.
According to the NCDC, “one new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours. Till date, 29,286 cases have been confirmed, 11,828 cases have been discharged and 654 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Medical doctors at the Infectious Disease Hospital, IDH, Akure, Ondo State have stopped attending to patients admitted at the facility.
The development followed the increasing figures of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Sunshine State.
The doctors under the aegis of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP), blamed the state government led by Rotimi Akeredolue, on the manner at which the COVID-19 pandemic was being handled in the state.
IDH is where patients with infectious diseases such as LASSA fever and COVID-19 are treated.
The State Secretary of NAGGMDP, Dr. Olasakinju Tunde, who announced the doctors’ withdrawal of service in a statement made available to the media on Monday, said it was due to failure of the government to accede to their demands.
The association hinged their reason on government’s failure to conclude negotiations on the erstwhile suspended Minimum Wage and Consequential Adjustments already enjoyed by the Non-Medical Staff Since January 2020, inadequate supply of personal protective equipments (PPE) and the general welfare of our members which include Life Insurance for frontline doctors.
The doctors had during a congress requested that members who are the COVID19 specialists at the IDH should continue to work till Thursday morning, 2nd July 2020 in the interest of the general public and particularly confirmation of the COVID19 Status of Mr. Governor.
Following the non-compliance with the earlier directive, the association directed that “it is imperative that our members be withdrawn immediately (from midnight today 6th July 2020) due to lack of the human face expected from the government.”
Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Gabduje has predicted the humiliation of Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki come September 19 when the state governorship election will take place.
He also promised that the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, who is heading Obaseki’s re-election, will be isolated.
Ganduje, while addressing the press on Monday, said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is only interested in the Edo State treasury, hence the support for Obaseki.
He said, “Governor Obaseki will be humiliated and Governor Wike isolated.”
Reacting, Governor Wike said he's not like Dollars that Ganduje can isolate in his pocket, referring to the ignoble video where Governor Ganduje was caught on camera stuffing his pockets with dollars.
Despite initial denials yesterday, it appears the acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has some serious financial "diversion and misappropriation" case to answer to the Presidency.
The ordeal of Magu got worse on Monday evening when he was thrown into a cell at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters in Area 10, Abuja, shortly after being interrogated by an interagency panel inside Aso Rock, Nigeria's seat of power.
Magu's arrest earlier on Monday afternoon had sent a frenzy across the landscape especially with the large number of policemen and Department of State personnel deployed to the EFCC office to seize him.
According to SR, the combined security team stormed the EFCC office at Wuse II in three trucks to arrest and move Magu to the Presidential Villa in the Asokoro area of the Federal Capital Territory to face the panel.
It was gathered that the interagency committee led by a former Court of Appeal judge, Ayo Salami, did not show Magu a copy of the allegations against him even though he requested to see one.
Panel members, it was gathered, only read from a dossier in front of them during the grilling session.
After completion of interrogation by the Presidential interagency committee over corruption allegations against him, Salami, who was said not to be satisfied at Magu's defence, ordered that the Acting EFCC boss be kept in detention until 10:00am this (Tuesday) morning when he'll be returned to Aso Rock Villa for continuation of the grilling by the committee.
These developments squashes claims by the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, that Magu was not arrested but voluntarily submitted himself to the panel.
It also punctures the lie by DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, that the secret police was not involved in the arrest of Magu.
Sources say Magu was arrested on Monday after it emerged that he had four houses and was moving money outside the country through third parties.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has recommended that politicians should consider virtual campaigns where applicable for the forthcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States as well as other pending elections.
The recommendation is contained in a document titled, ‘Guidelines for conducting elections during the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria’, released on Monday.
While the Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed the governorship election in Edo State for September 19, the election in Ondo State is scheduled for October 10.
There are states where local government elections or supplementary elections will be holding to fill vacancies in state Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly.
“Where applicable, virtual campaigns and rallies are encouraged. This can be done using televised or radio campaigns, and mobile vans,” the document read.
The NCDC urged politicians to adhere to codes of conduct developed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, including public health and social measures expected at rallies and election locations, through relevant communication channels – posters, TV and radio jingles.
In the event that there must be rallies, the centre recommended that all pre-emptive measures, including the compulsory use of face masks, should be adopted.
It recommended the utilisation of one-third of the actual capacity of venues.
The centre said the only way to conduct elections without putting any one at risk of contracting Covid-19 was to comply with all protective measures at all times.
Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), will face another day of questioning on Tuesday over the activities of the agency under his watch.
He was detained on Monday night at the police headquarters in Abuja.
The presidential panel probing him is headed by Ayo Salami, former president of the court of appeal.
TheCable understands that the panel sat till 10pm on Monday after which Magu was detained.
Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), had asked President Muhammadu Buhari to sack Magu over some “weighty” allegations.
Some of the allegations he listed are:
Discrepancies in the reconciliation records of the EFCC on recovered funds
Leaking investigative reports to the media before going to court
Sale of seized assets to cronies, associates and friends
Shortfall of N35 billion in his declaration of recovered funds
Insubordination to the AGF
Not providing enough evidences for the extradition of Diezani Alison-Madueke
Ignoring court order to unfreeze a N7 billion judgment in favour of a suspect
New resigned Secretary to the Ondo State Government, Sunday Abegunde, as promised to work against the re-election of Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
Shortly after tendering his resignation letter yesterday, he granted an interview in Yoruba language on Crest FM, during which he said he resigned from office because of the ill-treatment meted out to him by the governor.
He said, “I suffered in his (Akeredolu) administration because he didn’t release any fund to my office. He has been telling lies that he was giving me N5m every month even when he knew he didn’t give me such money.
“Akeredolu didn’t win the election in 2016 but we made it possible for him to become governor. We were the pillars behind him and we will not support him again. He will lose this time around.”
Abegunde, a two-term member of the House of Representatives further said that he resigned because he could no longer be part of a government that made its subjects to pass through hardship.
He said, “The Akeredolu’s administration is making the entire people of the state to suffer and I cannot be part of that any longer. ”
The Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 on Monday lamented the increasing rate of Covid-19 cases among people in government, saying it was directly impacting on governance and security in the country.
The PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who stated this at the task force press briefing in Abuja, also said the possibility of ordering a fresh total lockdown to curtail further spread of the virus could not be ruled out.
The SGF, who advised prominent Nigerians to take Covid-19 protocols seriously, said the virus does not respect status.
Mustapha’s warning came amid rising cases of Covid-19 among state governors and other prominent Nigerians.
Recently state governors, including David Umahi of Ebonyi, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and their Ondo State counterpart, Rotimi Akeredolu, contracted the virus.
Warning people in authority, the SGF said, “Of recent, we have witnessed a high rate of positive cases especially among people in authority. This has a direct impact on governance and security of our nation. We urge that vigilance and care should be exhibited by all Nigerians, irrespective of status. This virus does not discriminate and the PTF shall keep sustaining its sensitisation messaging.”
When asked if the task force would be considering a fresh lockdown in the face of what it observed as disregard for guidelines, Mustapha said events of coming weeks would determine the next line of action.
He said, “We will not speculate on what will happen in future but we will protect the lives of Nigerians.
“To achieve that, if it means to lock down again, we will not shy away from that responsibility. We will recommend to the President who will look at the report and take a decision on our recommendation. What happens in the next two three weeks will determine what we will do.”
