Police Arrest Woman For Killing Her Husband

The Abia police command has arrested one Mrs Rose Uwaga for allegedly strangling her 83-year-old husband, Alhaji Isa Uwaga, to death in Umuahia.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonnaya, confirmed the arrest of the woman, who was said to be in her early 70s.

Ogbonnaya told NAN that one of Uwaga’s children, Ibeabuchi, reported the matter to the police around noon on Thursday, July 2.

He said that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for proper investigation.

He also said that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue “for possible autopsy in order to ascertain what actually killed the man”.

The two aged couple had a disagreement, which degenerated into fisticuffs at their residence at Ohobo-Afara Umuahia.

“During the fight, the man allegedly grabbed a machete to scare the wife but the woman reportedly overpowered him.

The machete fell off his hand and the woman, who is huge, pinned him down by the neck and strangled him to death,” a resident of the area said on condition of anonymity.

Another account had it that the deceased might have slumped and died “out of exhaustion after his quarrel with his wife”.

“It is not possible that a woman of about 73 years can muster the strength to stangulate a man,” a friend to the family also said on condition of anonimity.

It was further learnt that the relations of the deceased rallied round to bury him shortly after his death, according to Islamic rite, before Ibeabuchi reportedly alerted the police.

The suspect, who was said to have immediately gone into hiding, was later arrested and detained by the police.

According to a police source, Ibeabuchi stated in his report that his parents were quarrelling at the time he left the house.

“He further stated that by the time he returned, he saw the lifeless body of his father in a sitting position in their house,” the source further said.

He explained that Osinbajo has never been involved in such shady activities.

He said, “Inundated by wide circulation of Fake News about VP’s purported involvement in some EFCC recovery billions, please rest assured they’re all LIES: calculated to confuse and concocted to smear Prof. Osinbajo’s image.

“The VP hasn’t and will never be involved in any such shady activities.”

The police have arrested the All Progressive Congress ward chairman in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Christopher Ogah, for allegedly defiling two girls in his house in Obi town.

A witness said the APC chairman lured the girls when they entered his house to fetch water, adding that it was not his first time of committing such crime.

He said the two girls were 12 and 13-respectively.

Alhaji Mohammad Oyimoga Oyigye, Chairman of the Local Government Area, said he saved Ogah from being lynched by angry youth, who caught him and immediately handed him over to the police.

Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Bola Longe, said he had directed that the case be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for a discreet investigation after which the suspect will be charged to court.

“The police under my watch want to warn would-be rapist to have a rethink or face the wrath of the law.

”I am assuring the public of the police command’s commitment to arrest and prosecute anyone found wanting no matter how highly placed,” he said.

British rugby star's ex wife is ordered to pay back just £1 after swindling him of £1million

Rugby star Gareth Cooper's ex-wife has been ordered to pay him back just £1 because she is now bankrupt after swindling him out of £1million by fraudulently claiming mortgages and loans in his name.

The former British Lions and Wales player, 41, had set up two gyms and freight businesses to be run by his wife Debra Leyshon.

But Leyshon, 41, claimed loans and mortgages on the family home and four other properties - while falsely alleging that the businesses were 'thriving'.

She was handed a two-year suspended sentence at Cardiff Crown court after pleading guilty to 13 counts of fraud totalling more than £1million.

The ex-Wales scrum half, who has been forced to move back in with his parents as he faces £120,000 in legal fees, said he was 'deceived and manipulated' by 'the person I trusted the most'.

He continued: 'I do not think I will ever be the same again.'

Leyshon's business partner Simon Thomas, 47, and associate Mark Lee also received suspended sentences after admitting counts of fraud.

A Proceeds of Crime Act hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard Leyshon, from Bridgend, had netted £371,271 from the crimes. And Thomas, from Cowbridge, had made £161,081.

Leyshon took over the businesses in 2005 after she married the rugby star.

But by 2017 Mr Cooper had received a letter from a solicitor, telling him he was bankrupt and should attend court.

But Judge David Wynn Morgan ordered both to pay back just a £1 nominal sum within the next 28 days.

Roger Griffiths, prosecuting said: 'Leyshon and Thomas have both been made bankrupt and their assets are being dealt with by a trustee in bankruptcy.

'As a result, the Crown will only be able to recover a nominal sum due to their status.'

In a statement read out at the sentencing, Mr Cooper told how lost all his money and had to move back in with his parents for their financial support as he had more than £120,000 in legal fees.

He added: 'This has had a profound and devastating effect on both me and my family.

'I was happily married with three children, enjoying a career playing a sport I excelled in for many years.

'I was deceived and manipulated by the person I trusted the most - my wife and the mother of my children.

'I do not think I will ever be the same again.'

Wike sacks perm sec for flouting Covid-19 guidelines

River State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has sacked a Permanent Secretary, Mr. Sunny Okere, with immediate effect for flouting and obstructing the enforcement of the Covid-19 guidelines.

A statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Paulinus Nsirim, said the governor spoke yesterday in a statewide broadcast.

Wike said his action against the permanent secretary would act as a lesson to all other public officers who might wish to be irresponsible.

Face mask can cause failed ATM transactions – Banks

Banks have advised customers to remove their face masks when carrying out transactions through Automated Teller Machines to ensure that their faces are properly recognised.

Findings revealed that some banks have installed face detection features in their ATMs which can prevent an ATM from dispensing cash if it is unable to recognise the face of the user.

While the banks have introduced the wearing of face masks as a condition to enter the banking halls, they have also advised customers to remove it when they want to withdraw money from ATMs.

In an email to its customers on measures to keep transactions protected, Fidelity Bank said, “Wearing of face masks is a safety and precautionary measure we must all adhere to in this period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“However, we advise that you remove your face mask while making withdrawals or carrying out ATM transactions to allow our ATM properly recognise you.

“Fidelity Bank ATM machines have face detection features installed to curb incidences of fraudulent ATM withdrawals.

“Consequently, you may not be able to carry out any transaction if our ATMs are not able to properly recognise you. We apologise for the inconvenience that this may cause you.”

As lockdown continues to ease gradually, banks have continued to expand their operations.

In an email to its customers, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc listed its branches that would be accessible to customers.

It said, “When visiting any of our branches, kindly protect yourself by wearing a face mask at all times. It is also very important that you keep a safe distance when in a queue inside or outside the branch.

“Before visiting any of our branches, please remember that you can withdraw up to N150,000 at all our ATMs and that you can do most of your banking from the safety of your home.”

GTBank said the customers could bank through its e-payment platforms.

Man who was convicted for murdering his girlfriend appears in court on a different charge of killing his wife six years earlier

The man convicted of murdering children's author Helen Bailey after hiding her body in a drain under their mansion appeared in court this week accused of killing his wife six years earlier.

Ian Stewart was jailed for life with a minimum term of 34 years at St Albans Crown Court in 2017 after a jury convicted him of killing his 51-year-old partner, who wrote the Electra Brown series of books.

The couple lived in a large detached house in Royston, Hertfordshire, where, in July 2016, her remains were found in a cesspit under the garage - four months after she vanished. She had been drugged and suffocated.

Stewart, now 59, has now been charged with the murder of his wife Diane Stewart, aged 47, in Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire on June 25 2010. An inquest at the time concluded the mother of two of his children had died of natural causes as a result of epilepsy.

He made a brief appearance before Judge Michael Kay QC at St Albans Crown Court. No plea was taken. He told Ian Stewart he would be remanded in custody.

The judge said there will be a plea hearing on Monday September 21. No date for a trial was set.

Tragically, Diane's mother Noreen Lem passed away aged 88 before Stewart was charged with her daughter's murder. She is believed to have died of pneumonia last year.

Diane's brother Chris Lem, 60, said: 'We just want justice to take its course.'

A friend of Noreen said: 'You can imagine how distressing it [the investigation] was for her.

'She was upset, especially as she had no reason to suspect anything until Helen was murdered.'

The prosecution asked for the judge to make a Contempt Order, in an attempt to prevent a future jury knowing he had a previous conviction for murder.

Lagos Police To Begin Arresting People Not Wearing Face Mask

The Lagos State Police Command is set to begin the arrest of any resident of the state caught not using a face mask in public.

The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, who disclosed this in an interview with The Nation, said the command has arrested 3,802 persons between April and June for not wearing face masks, adding that all the suspects were charged to court and sentenced accordingly.

“We have been enforcing the law. We have arrested 3,802 people for not using face masks and 12,900 suspects were held for flouting various COVID-19 guidelines since the commencement of the lockdown in April. They were all charged to court. But we are going to be stricter now because we have noticed that some people do not wear at all while others hang it on their chins. That is not the purpose for the directive.

The face mask must be properly worn to cover the mouth and nose. That is how it will serve its purpose. Our people must know that the policy is for their safety and that of society. As soon as you step out of your house into public space, you should have your face mask on, worn properly. It should be that way until you return to your private space.

"Wearing a face mask is compulsory just as social distancing is compulsory. You cannot do one and leave the other. For emphasis, we will arrest those who put the face mask on their chins and also arrest those not wearing it," he said.

Chicago’s top criminal lawyer Pissetzky to defend Hushpuppi

Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, a.k.a Hushpuppi has hired Gal Pissetzky, one of the best criminal defence lawyers in Chicago area to defend him.

Hushpuppi, who was extradited to US from Dubai last week Thursday faces trial in Los Angeles, where his case has been filed before a US District Court in Central District of California.

Chicago therefore appears like a temporary bus stop as he will be transferred soon.

Pissetsky told P.M. News he will handle Hushpuppi’s defence all the way to Los Angeles.

In a text message to P.M.News early Wednesday, he confirmed he is Abbas’s Defence attorney.

“I do represent Mr Abbas”, Pissetzky said. “Most likely I’ll be following the case to LA too”

Hushpuppi appeared to have hired the right attorney.

Mr. Pissetzky is described on the website of his law firm, Pissetzky & Berliner, LLC as a well-respected member of the legal community, who has represented many clients in high-profile cases, and is frequently quoted in the press.

“He regularly appears on TV as the legal consultant/advisor regarding high profile criminal cases”.

Mr. Pissetzky has handled multi-issue complex trials and appeals.

“His practice focuses on defending clients of complex federal and state crimes, such as financial crimes, wire fraud, mail fraud, political corruption, medicare fraud, conspiracy, large-scale drug crimes, murder, attempted murder and other violent crimes, gun offences, sex offences, as well as any criminal forfeiture proceedings that occur as a result of the criminal charges”, the web site said.

Mr. Pissetzky began his career as a defence attorney in 2002 after spending four years with the Cook County State Attorney’s Office.

He obtained his J.D. from the John Marshall Law School. He is a member of the Illinois Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Mr. Pissetzky has earned a reputation for his fierce and zealous advocacy. He was named a Super Lawyer Rising Star in 2011 and included in the list of Top 100 Trial Lawyers repeatedly

Pissetzky client Ramon Hushpuppi was described by the U.S. Justice Department, along with FBI as “one of the leaders of a transnational network that facilitates computer intrusions” in order “to steal hundreds of millions of dollars” from victims all over the world.

The U.S has declined to identify all those targeted by the alleged conspiracy.

The list reportedly includes a New York-based law firm that was defrauded out of almost US$1 million last October, a “foreign financial institution” that suffered a loss of $14.7 million following a cyber-heist in February 2019, and an English Premier League football club targeted as part of a scheme to steal almost $125 million.

In a separate case filed in U.S. District Court of Chicago, Hushpuppi’s friend, Olalekan Jacob Ponle, also known as “Mr. Woodbery” and “Mark Kain,” 29, originally of Lagos, Nigeria, is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

“A criminal complaint accuses Ponle of orchestrating “business email compromise” schemes to defraud several U.S.-based companies. The schemes resulted in attempted or actual losses to victim companies in the tens of millions of dollars, including a Chicago-based company that was defrauded into sending wire transfers totaling $15.2 million, the complaint states”.

Pissetzky said he is not the attorney for Woodberry.

Female American Air Force officer is slammed for saying s.e.x.u.a.l harassment is the price women have to pay for joining the army

A female Air Force Lt. Col. has been slammed for suggesting murdered soldier Vanessa Guillen deserved to be s3xually harassed because it's 'the price of admission' for women in the army and 'if you're gonna cry like a snowflake about it, you're gonna pay the price'.

Air Force Lt. Col. Betsy Schoeller made the shocking comments on a Facebook thread where another person had shared an article about the missing soldier being bludgeoned to death shortly after telling family and friends she was being sexually harassed by a superior.

Schoeller, who is now a senior lecturer at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, hit out at other social media users who expressed sympathy for Guillen.

'You guys are kidding, right? Sexual harassment is the price of admission for women into the good ole boy club,' the military veteran wrote.

'If you're gonna cry like a snowflake about it, you're gonna pay the price.'

Schoeller's comments came just hours after the attorney for Guillen's devastated family released information that the 20-year-old Fort Hood soldier had been bludgeoned to death with a hammer in the armory room where she worked.

Her post, which has since been deleted, sparked outrage from other social media users and a Change.org petition is demanding she be fired from her position at the University of Wisconsin.

'Incredible - I can't believe what I'm reading. Where does she get off saying something like that?! This woman was bludgeoned, hacked up and buried in a shallow grave!' wrote one outraged social media user.

Others blasted her for being part of the problem with entrenched sexual harassment of women in the armed forces.

'This is like the whole “girls can’t wear revealing clothing because men can’t control their urges” on a whole other level,' another person wrote on Facebook.

'Gahhhh so many swear words are flying around my head.'

A fellow veteran agreed that Schoeller's response encourages harassment taking place.

'I spent literally half my career handling sexual assault/harassment charges for sailors,' they said.

'Leaders like her not only encourage harassment, they protect predators. This is not a mentality she left with her uniform. She brought it with her.'

Several people pointed out her high rank, saying she had a responsibility to tackle issues of harassment within the Air Force.

In one image from 2012, the lieutenant colonel is pictured meeting Michelle Obama during a visit from the then-First Lady to meet with family members of the victims of a Sikh temple shooting.

Guillen was last seen alive at the Fort Hood Army Base in Killeen, Texas, on April 22 after telling her family she was being harassed by a sergeant.

Her partial remains were finally found Tuesday near the Leon River in Bell County - more than two months after her disappearance.

An FBI criminal complaint released Thursday identified 20-year-old US Army Specialist Aaron Robinson murdered her by striking her in the head with a hammer on Fort Hood on April 22.

Robinson committed suicide Wednesday, just hours after Guillen's body was discovered.

He fled Fort Hood Tuesday night before he could be arrested by Army criminal investigators and shot himself when officials caught up with him a few miles from the base early Wednesday morning.

As authorities tried to confront him, he killed himself.

'As officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, the suspect displayed a weapon and discharged it toward himself. The suspect succumbed from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,' the Killeen Police Department said.

Cecily Aguilar, 22, the estranged wife of a Fort Hood soldier, has been arrested and charged with helping Robinson dismember and dispose of Guillen's body.

She has been charged with one count of conspiracy to tamper with evidence and could face 20 years in jail and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

According to the FBI complaint, Robinson told Aguilar he killed Guillen and moved her body off to a remote site in Bell County.

Robinson and Aguilar then disposed of her body.

Protests surrounding the death of George Floyd may be the largest in America's history as 26 million Americans participated

Black Lives Matter protests that have erupted across the United States may be the largest demonstrations in the country's history, with upwards of 26million people participating.

The figures come from four recent polls - including one released by Civis Analytics - that found that 15 million people to 26 million people have been a part of demonstrations that spawned following the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.

'I've never seen self-reports of protest participation that high for a specific issue over such a short period,' Neal Caren, associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, explained to the New York Times.

The surveys suggest that at the minimum, seven million people participated in demonstrations over the last several weeks.

In comparison, roughly three million to five million people came out for the Woman's March of 2017 on a single day. That event was highly organized in contrast with BLM demonstrations, which have been much more organic.

'Really, it's hard to overstate the scale of this movement,' said Deva Woodly, an associate professor of politics at the New School.

Civil rights marches in the 1960s were not nearly as big, the professor added.

'If we added up all those protests during that period, we're talking about hundreds of thousands of people, but not millions,' she said.

A review of international protests for independence by Erica Chenoweth, a professor at Harvard Kennedy School, found that roughly 3.5 per cent of a country's population protest to unseat government leadership.

More than 4,700 demonstrations have happened in the United States since May 26, averaging out to roughly 140 per day.

'The geographic spread of protest is a really important characteristic and helps signal the depth and breadth of a movement's support,' said Kenneth Andrews, a sociology professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Professor Woodly explained that the protests are taking place in such vast numbers because activists are gaining guidance and framework for their demonstrations from Black Lives Matter.
