President Trump Wears A Face-Mask In Public For The First Time

The US president was visiting the Walter Reed military hospital outside Washington, where he met wounded soldiers and health care workers.

"I've never been against masks but I do believe they have a time and a place," he said as he left the White House.

On his reason for wearing a face mask, he said: "I think when you're in a hospital, especially in that particular setting, where you're talking to a lot of soldiers and people that, in some cases, just got off the operating tables, I think it's a great thing to wear a mask."

People dumping wastes in canals are getting prosecuted in Ogun state

Ogun State government on Saturday arrested 128 environmental offenders and prosecuted them for engaging in acts that obstruct waterways and leading to flooding in the state.

The offenders were arrested by the state Environmental Health Personnel and the Nigeria Police, Ogun State Command.

They were prosecuted in major cities such as  Abeokuta, Ijebu-ode, Sagamu, Ota, Ifo, Mowe and Ibafo via mobile courts and found guilty of dumping refuse on roads, medians, water courses and canals.

The state government said their conducts contravened the state Environmental laws and thereby aiding and abetting flooding that often destroyed public and private properties as well as infringing on public peace and safety.

The offenders – all pleaded guilty and were subsequently fined between N5,000 and N10,000 depending on the severity of the offence to the environment and safety of others.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Head of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority OGWAMA, Mr Ola Oresanya, said the arrest and successful prosecution would serve as deterrent to others as the enforcement of the state environmental laws would be sustained.

Oresanya urged residents to patronize waste managers assigned to their areas as Governor Dapo Abiodun – led administration since January has accredited and assigned one hundred and twenty(120)PSP waste managers to various local governments for effective collection of refuse and stoppage of illegal and indiscriminate dumping of waste.

Another building partially collapses at Ikotun, Lagos

Another building has partially collapsed in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

According to the Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the building was found to be conspicuously distressed as many cracks were observed on the walls, pillars and decking.

This comes shortly after three persons died after another building collapsed on Lagos Island.

The LASEMA DG confirmed the tragic incident to Channels Television.

The three-story building collapsed in the early hours of Saturday while the occupants were asleep.

Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the remains of the deceased have been transported to the mortuary, while the nine others who sustained injuries were being administered pre-hospital care by the agency.

Social distancing not observed in aircraft because it is hygienic - Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika

As domestic flight operations resume in some of the nation’s airports, the Federal Government has explained why one of the safety protocols to curb the spread of Covid-19 may not be observed in aircrafts.

According to the government, the cabin is safer than any hospital theatre because of procedures air circulated in the cabin goes through.

Also, contrary to what passengers thought prior to resumption of domestic flights, the government also explained that the non-adherence to physical distancing was responsible for the ‘affordable’ ticket fare

Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, stated these on Saturday when he embarked on a simulation return flight to the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano to assess the preparation of the airport for resumption of flights.

The Minister was accompanied by the National Coordinator of Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, Dr. Sani Aliyu, the chairman Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Smart Adeyemi, Senator Kabiru Gaya, Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau and others.

Speaking after inspecting measures put in place at the airport, Sirika stated the airport was ready and safe to commence operation.

The Minister noted Kano, Maiduguri, Port Harcourt and Owerri airports joined Lagos and Abuja airports to commence domestic flight on Saturday, adding that other airports yet to commence will join on July 15..

He however noted that the Federal Government will not rush any airport that is not ready as it was not in a hurry to risk lives.

Airports across the country were shut for over three months as part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Speaking on why physical distancing may not be observed, Sirika said: “Because of the nature of the airplane, the airplane is hygienic enough once you have your mask, you are safe to remain seated on your seat and where possible, we will keep the distance.

“However, let me explain the mechanics and the going ons in an airplane that makes it safe in Covid-19 period. Airplanes are designed in such a way that the ambient air at altitudes is clean. It is not contaminated. The air is dropped in the aircrafts, pressurised and because of pressurization, the temperature of the air goes up to 200 degrees which is twice boiling water and there is no bacteria or virus that can survive it and it is suddenly cooled to about 2 degrees centigrate and then it is passed to a filter.

“Passing through the filtration system ensures that every single organism is screened and then it is passed to the cabin and once it is passed through the cabin, it comes from the ceiling downwards.

“So, it is not coming from the cockpit to the rear, it is from the ceiling downwards and it drops on the floor and gets circulated.

“This circulation happens every two minutes. So, on a flight from Abuja to Lagos, the circulation will happen like 27 to 30 times. With this, it is ensured that it is more hygienic to be in an airplane than to be in an operating theatre in the hospital.”

He continued: “With this mechanism in place, everything will be safe provided that we are decontaminating the airplane before we enter and decontaminating after we leave and also cleaning all the possible surfaces that one will touch.

“If this continues, then everyone is safe to remain in the cabin sitted next to each other with the mask on. So with this, yes you can be without physical distancing but in the departure and arrival halls and everywhere including the buses, you must remain physically distanced like at least six feet or two metres.”

On the connection of airfare with physical distancing, he said: “Airfares are normal. There is little or no increase because nothing changed within the cabin.”

3 killed, 74 injured in Mali protests

The death toll of the two-day violent protests in Mali’s capital Bamako has increased to three.

At least 74 others were injured.

Xinhua, quoting local hospital authorities, also reported significant material damage, especially to the National Assembly, which was looted by protesters.

At least six leaders of the demonstrations were arrested Friday night and Saturday, said the 5 June Movement- Rally of Patriotic Forces (M5-RFP), organiser of the protests.

In a message published by the Malian presidency Friday night, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita regretted the violence.

He reaffirmed his “wish to continue the dialogue” with the protesters.

To ease the tension in the country, Keita has made several proposals to end the crisis.

But the protesters rejected the proposals.

Instead, they called for the appointment of a prime minister among their ranks and the resignation of Keita.

The capital was largely paralysed since Friday when the demonstrations turned violent.

NDDC: Akpabio told me to do his bidding or be removed, ex-MD alleges

The immediate past acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Gbene Joi Nunieh, has denied that the agency spent N22.6billion under her stewardship, just as she alleged that the Niger Delta Minister, Senator Godswill Akpabio, threatened her to do his bidding or be removed from office..

Nunieh spoke to journalists, on Friday, after the final session of the Senate Ad hoc Committee investigating alleged financial recklessness and misappropriation of N40billion by the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the NDDC, between October 2019 and May this year.

She said no payment was made by the NDDC under her watch without the knowledge of Akpabio.

According to her, only N8billion was expended by the agency from October 29, 2019 to May 31, 2020, when she held sway contrary to the figure being bandied around.

The Chairman of the Senate Adhoc Committee, Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi, had said that based on record supplied to the panel by the IMC, the agency had so far spent N81.5billion.

He added that of the amount, the IMC, led by Nunieh, between October 2019 to February 18, 2020, spent a total of N22.5billion while the current one, led by Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei, has so far spent N59.1billion.

But Nunieh denied spending such huge sum.

The ex-Acting MD of the NDDC further alleged that the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs frustrated her efforts during her tenure before she was finally removed from office.

She alleged that Akpabio told her on the day that her committee was inaugurated that she must always do his bidding.

“Madam MD, if you don’t do what l say, the same one that l used in signing your letter is the same one l will use to remove you, “ she quoted Akpabio as saying.

Nunieh also alleged that she was instructed to write an official report to implicate the Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, over alleged fraudulent contract awards and executions.

The offence of Nwaoboshi was that he was opposed to the NDDC being run by an interim committee, but she said she rebuffed all such entreaties .

Nunieh said: “They did all manner of things to forcefully remove me from office”.

She said they finally succeeded in getting her out of NDDC for the sole purpose of having their way, which , according to her, “ is to run the place the way they like under the present team of IMC.”

With 664 new infections, COVID-19 cases in Nigeria near 32,000

With 664 new infections, the number of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria has risen to 31,987.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed this in a tweet on Saturday night.

According to the agency, the new infections were recorded in 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Lagos maintained the lead position with a total of 224 new infections, followed by the FCT with 105 and Edo with 85 new cases.

Other states include Ondo with 64 new cases, Kaduna with 32, Imo with 27, Osun with 19, Plateau, Oyo and Ogun with 17 each, Rivers with 14, Delta with 11, Adamawa with 10, Enugu with seven, Nassarawa with six, while three cases each were recorded in Gombe Abia and Ekiti states.

The NCDC also noted that 13,103 persons have recovered from the virus and have been discharged while the death toll in the country now stands at 724.

See the full breakdown of cases by state.

Globally, the novel coronavirus has killed at least 561,551 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP on Saturday.

At least 12,580,980 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories. Of these, at least 6,706,700 are now considered recovered.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

Since Friday, 5,318 new deaths and 217,531 new cases have been recorded worldwide.

The countries with the most number of new deaths were Brazil with 1,214 new deaths, followed by the United States with 888 and Mexico with 665.

AGF Malami Cries Out Over Alleged N300Million House In Abuja

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) on Saturday denied buying a N300 million house for his newly wedded son, Abdulazeez, in Abuja.

Malami, in a statement issued by his media aide, Umar Gwandu, also dismissed as untrue claims in a social media report that COVID-19 guidelines were flouted during Abdulazeez’s wedding fatiha held in Kano.

He described the report as mischievous, deceitful, perfidious and “a clear violation of ethical journalism practices on verification of facts and authentication of claims.”

He challenged his accusers to name the vendor of the purported house and its location and to publish the title documents.

“God knows that I did not purchase any house for him in Abuja. Not even a rented house was secured for my son in Abuja, because he has no plan to live in Abuja,” Malami was quoted as saying.

The statement added: “The allegation of hiring private jets for the marriage was preposterous.

“It is common knowledge that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice had neither a father nor mother anywhere in Nigeria to be conveyed to Kano for the wedding.

“Who then is the Attorney-General using the chartered flight to convey? Which jets are chartered? Who paid for the charter? Through which means was the money paid?”

He said the wedding fatiha took place “under strict observance of the protocols and guidelines of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19.”

“It is important to note that the wedding fatiha took place in Kano on Saturday 11th July, 2020 in the morning.

“Any other activity before or after the wedding fatiha is not connected with the marriage and we therefore disassociate ourselves from it in its entirety.”

Pastor Allegedly Used By Magu To Move Money Revealed

Money is important for survival, but the love of money is the root of all evil. A report by the Presidential Probe Panel has shown details of how Ibrahim Magu, the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), allegedly used a cleric to launder funds abroad.

Magu is currently being interrogated by the panel headed by retired Justice Ayo Salami over allegations of lack of transparency in managing recovered assets and mismanagement of EFCC.

A copy of the report made available to NAN in Abuja disclosed that the founder of the Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry, Abuja, Dr Emmanuel Omale was used by Magu to launder funds.

Omale’s name was uncovered through an investigative report on EFCC’s activities by the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and mentioned in the final report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets (PCARA).

The report added that the relatively unknown Pastor is alleged to have bought a landed property on behalf of Magu worth N573 million in Dubai, United Arab Emirate.

The report said,“He’s reported to have travelled to Dubai with Mr Magu, and his name was used in purchasing a property in Dubai for Mr Magu.

“As an unknown pastor, the NFIU’s report showed the huge movement of funds ranging from N573,228,040.41,” the report said.

However, efforts had been intensified to reveal the real identity of the Pastor and to arraign him for prosecution if found culpable.

Magu is expected to appear before the Salami probe panel on Monday, to continue to answer questions over several allegations.

Five dead from shooting at South African mega church

At least five people were killed and 40 others, including off-duty police officers, arrested Saturday after gunmen stormed a South African church, reportedly over a leadership dispute, the national police commissioner said.

According to a statement by South Africa’s top cop, General Khehla John Sitole: “Four people were found shot and burnt to death in a car while a fifth victim, a security guard, was also fatally shot in his car while he was apparently attending this complaint.”

The unusually violent incident took place early Saturday when an armed group stormed the International Pentecostal Holiness Church in Zuurbekom, on the western outskirts of Johannesburg, “indicating that they were coming to take over the premises,” police said.

The church has had multiple succession-related clashes that have been widely reported by local media since multimillionaire leader and founder Comforter Glayton Modise died in 2016.

Sitole said police responded to reports of “shooting and an alleged hostage situation,” and seized more than 34 firearms including five rifles, 16 other guns and 13 pistols.

“I am certain that the speedy response by the joint security forces has averted what could have been a more severe blood bath”, Sitole said.

More than 40 suspects, including six taken to hospital, were arrested.

They included members of the South African police, the National Defence Force, the Johannesburg Metro Police, and the Department of Correctional Services.

However, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said that the law enforcement officers arrested were worshippers that got caught up in the clashes.

“They were arrested in their capacity as church members, not as officers,” Naidoo told AFP.

The police commissioner said authorities are investigating “the possibility that this attack may have been motivated by a feud between conflicted parties of the church,” which is used to factional struggles.

Local media reported that in November 2018, a shoot-out between opposing sides wounded three people outside the church headquarters in Zuurbekom.

In 2017, the warring factions went to court over claims that more than R110 million ($6.5 million) was missing from church coffers.

Believed to be South Africa’s second largest church group, it is estimated to have at least 1.5 million members according to the financial services group Sanlam.

COVID-19: FG receives critical medical equipment donated by ECOWAS, WAHO

The federal government on Saturday, received some consignments containing critical medical equipment donated by the Economic Community of West Africa, ECOWAS and the West African Health Organisation, WAHO.

The equipment, given to the country through WAHO, is aimed to support Nigeria’s effort to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The donated items included ventilators, test kits, personal protective equipment, PPE’s and face masks.

Director-General of WAHO, Prof. Stanley Okolo, who presented the items on behalf of the organisations to the country, explained that the items were donated to support Nigeria’s effort to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, speaking after taking delivery of the items, in Abuja, described the donation as good news as according to him, “these products are critical supplies in our COVID-19 response strategy.”

He conveyed the appreciation of President Muhammadu Buhari and the people of Nigeria, to ECOWAS and WAHO for what he described as “this brotherly gesture.”

Ehanire, who is the Chairman of the ECOWAS COVID-19 Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Health, said the government particularly “appreciate the choice of Abuja by ECOWAS and WAHO, as the central hub for receipt and distribution of regional supplies of medical products and equipment for the fight against COVID-19.”

” It is a great indication of confidence and we shall play our role in providing support to our fellow member states in the ECOWAS subregion, to fight this disease outbreak, of which President Buhari was recently designated Champion of the COVID-19 response,”he said.

The minister said he was pleased that in addition to “these subregional efforts, our development partners have joined in support; this being thanks to the advocacy of WAHO and the ECOWAS Commission.”

Noting that everyone was a witness “to the enormous health, economic and social impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic, particularly on low and lower medium countries of the world”, the minister explained that: “Since the 27th of February, when the first case was confirmed in Lagos, life has completely changed for us, as indeed it has in almost all nations.”

“The public health institution of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has been focused on providing the public health guidance we need to tackle the challenge,” he said.

According to him, “The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 was set up to lead the whole-of-government response strategy and determine non-pharmaceutical measures to ensure the safety of citizens.”

He spoke further: “Our health workers are toiling assiduously to treat COVID-19 patients, provide emergency care, while not losing sight of routine and essential health services.

“They all need our support and encouragement and I believe that the provision of these test kits and personal protective equipment (PPE)will generate even more peace of mind to facilitate their work.”

Ehanire assures the donor organisations that the donated items will not only fairly distributed but also utilized judiciously.

He said he was “certain that when other ECOWAS Member states receive their portion of these supplies, they will be just as appreciative of the generosity of the Government and people of Germany.”

Trump finally wears face mask as US sets new virus case record

United States President Donald Trump finally yielded to pressure and wore a face mask in public for the first time on Saturday as the US posted another daily record for coronavirus cases, while Disney World reopened in a state hit hard by the pandemic.

White House experts leading the national fight against the contagion have recommended wearing face coverings in public to prevent transmission of the illness.

But Trump had repeatedly avoided wearing a mask, even after staffers at the White House tested positive for the virus and as more aides have taken to wearing them.

Hours after the World Health Organization urged countries to step up control measures to rein in the disease, Trump donned a dark mask bearing the presidential seal as he visited wounded military veterans at the Walter Reed military hospital in a suburb outside Washington.

“I’ve never been against masks but I do believe they have a time and a place,” he told reporters as he left the White House.

Trump is trailing Democrat Joe Biden in the polls ahead of a November election and surveys show most Americans are unhappy with how he has handled the public health crisis.

But the president has continued to praise his own response to the pandemic despite a cascade of figures showing the extent of the disease’s spread across the United States.

The country posted yet another daily record of confirmed cases on Saturday night, with 66,528 new infections, while the death toll rose by almost 800 to nearly 135,000.

In Florida, where nearly one in six of those new infections were recorded, the Walt Disney World theme park partially reopened after four months of shutdown prompted by the virus.

Hundreds of people queued to enter the park in Orlando, some sporting Mickey ears but all wearing face masks, with social distancing and other hygiene precautions also in place.

Days earlier, top US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci said that Florida had begun reopening before meeting the criteria that would have enabled it to do so safely.

The coronavirus pandemic has infected nearly 13 million people, killed over 560,000 and triggered massive economic damage since the disease was first detected in China late last year.

The United States is the country worst hit by the illness, followed by Brazil — which surpassed 70,000 deaths on Friday.

How Magu used ‘Pastor’ to launder funds abroad

A report by the Presidential Probe Panel has revealed details of how the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, allegedly used a cleric to launder funds abroad.

Magu is currently being interrogated by the panel headed by retired Justice Ayo Salami over allegations of mismanagement and lack of transparency in managing recovered assets by the commission.

However, a copy of the report in Abuja said one Pastor Emmanuel Omale of Hand of God Prophetic Ministry was used by Magu in laundering the funds.

Omale’s name was uncovered through an investigative report on EFCC’s activities by the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and mentioned in the final report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets (PCARA).

According to the report, the unknown clergy is alleged to have bought a landed property on behalf of Magu worth N573 million in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

“Another individual who is helping in laundering funds for the Acting Chairman and who has been referred to in several petitions is one Pastor Emmanuel Omale (Hand of God Prophetic Ministry).

“He is reported to have traveled to Dubai with Mr. Magu and his name was used in purchasing property in Dubai for Mr Magu.

“As an unknown pastor, the NFIU’s report showed huge movement of funds ranging from N573,228,040.41,’’ the report said.

However, efforts had been intensified to expose the real identity of the Pastor with a view to arraigning him for prosecution, if found culpable.

On the Diezani Alison Madueke case, the PCARA Report accused Magu of failure to cooperate with authorities in the United Kingdom to facilitate effective prosecution of the case.

“In the Diezani Alison Madueke case, the Acting Chairman is failing to further cooperate with the UK NCA to enable them charge the Former Minister to court in the UK.

“The Acting Chairman despite his knowledge that Mrs Madueke will not be extradited to Nigeria until after her trial in the UK, has consistently been accusing the UK government on the pages of print and electronic media of not wanting to extradite her to Nigeria,’’ the report maintained.

Magu was also accused of deliberately refusing to provide documentary evidence that would make the office of the nation’s Attorney-General to commence the extradition process of Diezani Madueke.

“This has strained the EFCC relationship with Europe most strategic partner,’’ the report further observed.

Magu is being held at the Police headquarters in Abuja.

He is expected to reappear before the Salami probe panel on Monday, to defend himself against several allegations.

Nigerian advertised for sale on Facebook, 28 others return home from Lebanon

Peace Busari, a Nigerian woman offered for sale on Facebook by a Lebanese, Wael Jerro, is on her way home from Lebanon.

The Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed this on Saturday.

Also on the repatriation flight are 28 other citizens stranded in Lebanon amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He put a price tag of $1,000 on the 30-year-old Ibadan, Oyo State indigene.

The post generated outrage on the social media, as many Nigerians called for the arrest of the suspect and rescue of Busari.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health on Saturday said it had shut down the operations of a private laboratory in Banana Island carrying out COVID-19 tests without the required government approval.

Banana Island is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the state.

I own property housing Kiki Osinbajo's business, Dr Ayuba Musa speaks

Dr Ayuba Musa has waded into the controversy of the property housing GLAM’D Africa, a business owned by Kiki Osinbajo.

Musa’s reaction was sequel to a social media post by Jackson Ude, a New York based blogger, that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s daughter, 27 year-old Kiki, owns the property.

The landlord, in a statement Friday said the property was never, at any point in time, sold to the Vice President’s daughter or to anyone.

Musa said that he remained the rightful owner of the property and that all documents on the house were still carrying his name and challenged anyone in doubt to check with the FCT authorities.

“In reaction to the recent reports on social media with regards to the above mentioned property, I write to declare that I, Dr Ayuba Z Musa, am the rightful owner of the said property located at No. 40 Durban Street, Wuse 2, Abuja.

“I have all my documents which are duly registered with the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS).

“I have never at any point sold or have agreed to sell my property to GLAM’D Africa, Miss Osinbajo or to any other person; this is completely false,” he said.

According to him, Osinbajo’s daughter is his tenant and has been since April 12, 2017, adding that the tenancy was recently renewed for an additional period of one year.

Tinubu's Man, Segun Abraham Disqualified By APC For Ondo Guber

The Tijani Tumsa+led Screening Committee has disqualified one of the aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Ondo state governorship election.

Though the chairman of the screening committee, Alhaji Tumsa, refused to mention the name of the disqualified aspirant while submitting the report of the committee on Friday, Daily Trust learned that the person was Segun Abraham known to be a loyalist of Bola Tinubu.

The chairman, who said the 12 aspirants were assessed based on their presentations, and qualifications among others, added that the disqualified contender failed to meet up with the requirements set by the party.

He said: “Of the 12 aspirants fit for the election, the committee has deemed it possible to qualify eleven of the aspirants to contest for the primary. We understand of course that the 12th aspirant has the option of appealing the decision of the committee.
