NSCDC parades 8 suspects for armed robbery [photos]

The Oyo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), on Monday, paraded eight suspects for alleged armed robbery.

The Command said it also recovered three motorcycles from the suspects.

The NSCDC state Commandant, Iskilu Akinsanya, while briefing newsmen at the NSCDC’s headquarter, Agodi, said the suspects were arrested at Awososo area, along NNPC road in the early hours of Sunday.

Akinsanya said two of the suspects attacked a commercial motorcyclist at about 6:30am around Awososo area of the state.

The Commandant said that the suspects attacked the motorcyclist, identified as Mr Adeyi Olalekan with a locally-made gun and a knife before snatching his motorcycle.

He said one of the suspects fell from the bike and was quickly arrested by men of the NSCDC at Apata.

Akinsanya said that the remaining 6 suspects were later apprehended by NSCDC Intelligence and Investigation Department.

“We apprehended two suspects and six accomplices, in the process we caught them with three motorcycles, one locally-made gun and six handsets.

Breakthrough beckons as Russia completes human trial of COVID-19 vaccine

There seems to be a headway in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic as Russia has completed the first ever clinical trials of vaccine on humans.

This is even as a report has claimed that the vaccines have proven to be effective among volunteers they were used on.

Announcing the development Monday, the Chief Researcher and Head, Centre for Clinical Research on Medications, Sechenov University, Russia, Elena Smolyarchuk, said those who featured in the human trial will be discharged soon.

He said: “The research has been completed and it proved that the vaccine is safe. The volunteers will be discharged on July 15 and July 20.”

There was no other information on when this vaccine would enter commercial production.

Russia had allowed clinical trials of two forms of a potential COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology.

The first one was carried out at the Burdenko Military Hospital, while the other vaccine was given to COVID-19 patients at the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

He explained that: “Some 20 people volunteered for the injection. After given the shot, the volunteers were asked to quarantine in the hospital for 28 days.”

Earlier, results of the COVID-19 vaccine tests performed on a group of volunteers in Russia showed that they were developing immunity to the coronavirus, but what the actual composition of the drug was not explained.

There are at least 21 vaccines currently under trial worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Every country and every laboratory is taking a different approach to finding the right solution to stop the virus from taking over the world.

Russia has reported 719,449 cases of COVID-19. Some 11,188 people have died from complications caused by the disease.

EFCC begs court to deny popular influencer, Adeherself bail

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) has urged an Ikeja Special Offences Court to deny popular social media influencer, Adedamola Adewale Rukayat, also known as Adeherself bail.

Adeherself had been arraigned before Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Special Offence Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos on a one-count charge of possession of fraudulent documents

She was among five persons arrested by the EFCC for their alleged involvement in internet-related fraud.

The five suspects were apprehended in different areas of Lagos during a raid by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal Office.

Adewale, 20, and his accomplice, Lamina Hamzat Ajibola, were arrested at the Agungi area of Lekki, Lagos State, EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale said.

At the beginning of the trial today, Mr Samuel Daji, the lead prosecuting counsel for the anti-graft agency, made the plea to court to deny Adewale’s bail hearing

“I urge the court to refuse the bail of the defendant and order accelerated hearing,” Daji said.

Earlier, the defence counsel, Mr Tunde Salami, had applied to the court to grant bail on liberal terms to Adewale who had been remanded in EFCC’s custody since July 7.

Following the submissions of the defence and prosecuting counsel, Justice Sherifat Solebo, adjourned the case till Wednesday for ruling on the bail application.

According to the EFCC, Adewale on June 15 when she was arrested had with the intent to defraud, had in her possession a fraudulent document entitled “WhatsApp.”

“The offence violates Section 318 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,” Daji had said.

Court rules that Nigerian Army has no right to declare any citizen wanted

A federal high court in Abuja has ruled that the Nigerian army has no powers to declare any citizen wanted.

Ijeoma Ojukwu, the judge, delivered the ruling in a case marked FHC/ABJ/CS/267/2019 between one Issa Perry Brimah, a Nigerian activist in diaspora and the Nigerian Army.

In January 2019, the army declared Brimah wanted for reportedly raising funds for troops and vigilantes fighting Boko Haram insurgents in the north-east.

Brimah had launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to provide food for the soldiers in that part of the country.

But the army described his actions as “fraudulent” and said he embarked on the venture “ostensibly to defraud unsuspecting members of the public, especially the international community to fund subversive activities and personal lifestyle”.

Following the declaration, Brimah filed a suit against the army for alleged defamation.

Brimah said he was suing “on behalf of millions of disenfranchised citizens of the state who have often been intimidated and terrorized by the Nigerian army in flaunting of the constitution by act of willfully declaring citizens wanted and making arrests within the democratic space in the stead of the police, the formal law enforcers”.

Delivering the ruling, Ojukwu held that the army had no right to declare the plaintiff wanted without making a formal report to law enforcement agencies, who enforce law and order.

“The army or defendant has no vires to declare the plaintiff wanted without due process of law,” she said.

“However, it must be stated here without equivocation that the defendant has no right to declare the plaintiff wanted without following the appropriate procedure.

“The defendant cannot arrest the plaintiff arbitrarily without making a formal report to law enforcement agency with the mandate to enforce law and order, otherwise it would transmute to self-help. The duty of the defendant is to make a formal report to the appropriate authority like the police and await the outcome.”

Family Accuses Delta Monarch Of Killing Their Son (Details)

The family of Adjogbe in Evwreni community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, has accused the community's monarch, Oghenekevwe Kumane, of ordering the killing of their son, Sylvester Adjogbe.

Sylvester, younger brother to the immediate past Executive Director, Projects, of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Samuel Adjogbe, was killed on July 1, 2020 by armed vigilante codenamed "Bakassi Boys" on the alleged orders of the monarch.

Crisis had engulfed the community few weeks ago following the disbandment of the community's local security outfit said to be working with the monarch, leading to the alleged killing of two persons; one Marcus Uba and a little girl, Esther Kowfigho, while the house of one Matthew Uba was vandalised by the local vigilante.

The development, SR reliably gathered, had on June 20, 2020 led to the failed attempted assassination of Samuel Adjogbe along the East/West Road close to the community, leaving one of his aides and driver hospitalised.

According to sources, a police team from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Asaba, led by one John Agbajie, stormed the community to arrest a suspect, Atiri Stephen, but the monarch allegedly mobilised his local vigilante and prevented the arrest.

Addressing journalists on Sunday on behalf of the Adjogbe family, Lucky Adjogbe, a member of the family, accused the traditional ruler of ordering the killing of their son, Sylvester, at the family compund at Evwreni community.

"Our brother, Sylvester Adjogbe, 34, was gruesomely murdered at the family compound on July 1, 2020, by one Kelly Omojugheri on the orders of the Ovie of Evwreni Kingdom, HRM Oghenekevwe Kumane, and we demand justice.

"We are calling on the Inspector-General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Delta State, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to investigate the circumstance leading to the murder of our younger brother and bring the perpetuator to book, anything short of this is injustice."

When SR contacted the traditional ruler, Kumane, over the issue, he declined comments as soon as he realised he was speaking with a journalist.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onowakpoyeya, confirmed the crisis in the community when contacted by our correspondent, saying that "investigations are still ongoing".

America, UK, Dubai Monitoring What Is Happening To Magu

Some key countries in Nigeria's fight against corruption have shown interest in the ongoing probe into activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under suspended acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu.

They are monitoring the process of the investigation, how Nigerian officials are dealing with Magu.

The countries include the United States (U.S.), the United Kingdom (UK), the United Arab Emirates (UAE), France and Switzerland.

For one week, Magu has been detained. He was accosted on the road in Abuja and dragged to appear before the Justice Isa Ayo Salami Presidential Investigation Panel, which is probing allegations levelled against him by Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami.

On Sunday, he denied the claim that he failed to account for the interest in the N550 billion recovered fund kept in CBN’s custody.

In a statement by his lawyer Wahab Shittu, Magu said such recovered fund kept with the Central Bank of Nigeria do not generate interest.

The statement said: “It is falsehood that Magu placed N550 billion recovered loot into a deposit account.

“The alleged transaction never featured in the proceedings before the Salami panel. Magu was never confronted with any such allegation by the panel and the news is blatant falsehood.

“To the best of Magu’s knowledge, no such amount is in any such account and he remains aghast at such outrageous figures. No one has confronted Magu with such allegations.

“All recovered funds are lodged in the Treasury Single Account (TSA) with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Such recovered funds do not generate interest. This is elementary and can be verified from the CBN and the federal ministry of finance.

This can also be confirmed from other government revenue generating agencies. Funds kept in TSA account do not generate interest.”

Investigation by The Nation revealed that the United Kingdom, the United States and others are closely monitoring development on the allegations against Magu and the activities of the Presidential Investigation Committee.

There are some investigative cases in which Nigeria and some of these foreign nations are collaborating on.

Looted funds, which Nigeria is battling to recover, were stashed away in some of these countries.

A top diplomatic source said some of these nations are taking their time to monitor what is going on which is why they have not issued a joint statement on the development in EFCC.

The source said: “Despite the fact that we have our individual intelligence on the development in your country, we are sitting and watching what is going on at the investigative committee.

“We want to know if the allegations against Magu are true; if the process of investigation is in conformity with international best practices; whether there is fair hearing and the implications of the challenge at hand for the anti-corruption campaign in your country.

“We are as curious as every Nigerian in knowing the truth about all these allegations. Ultimately, we desire strict commitment to the Rule of Law, social Justice, upholding the fundamentals of democracy and human rights, fairness and equity to all and a corruption-free Nigeria.”

Another senior diplomat, who has deep knowledge of Nigerian politics, said: “My country knows a lot about power play in Nigeria (even as it may apply to this case) but we are careful in dabbling in the affairs of your country.

“We are being meticulous in monitoring the fact-finding committee because its findings and recommendations might determine your commitment to the anti-graft activities.”

An expert in one of the international agencies said: “All members of the Diplomatic Corps, global financial institutions and donor agencies are interested in the ongoing investigation of EFCC’s activities under Magu.

“We have been comparing notes at the diplomatic level, especially by countries like the UK, the U.S., France, Switzerland, Italy, UAE and others. We are giving all the parties the benefit of the doubt, even though the activities of some political office holders are predictable in this circumstance,

“Whatever is the outcome, it will assist in reaching conclusions on where Nigeria is headed in fighting corruption and ensuring justice.”

Lovers’ bodies found hanging side by side days after eloping

A cloud of mourning has swept over Kaumoni village in Matungulu, Machakos County, Kenya after bodies of two lovers were found hanging side by side just days after eloping from the capital city.

Eyewitnesses said that the duo has been living together in Nairobi’s Kayole estate and arrived at their rural home on Friday after travel restrictions from the capital were lifted by the President.

The bodies have been identified as that of 28-year-old Dennis Pius and his 19-year-old lover Susan Ndeto.

Susan’s mother said that she went on a frantic search of her daughter after several calls went unanswered on Sunday morning, July 12.

She travelled from Nairobi to the village where her worst fears were confirmed when she found the two bodies hanging from the roof of the house in their bedroom.

The motive for the suspected suicide is unknown. The couple, according to neighbours, were seen chatting happily only to go mute inside their two-room house at about 1 pm.

However, teenager’s mother said the two had eloped from Kayole.

The mother said she had been warning the girl against the relationship with the much older man.

The Sunday incident, which took place about 2 pm, was confirmed by assistant chief Ruth Mwende Ngungu.

The two bodies were taken to Kangundo Level IV Hospital mortuary as investigations commence.

The bizarre incidence comes barely six months after another couple was found dead inside their house in Nguluni location.

The Nguluni man took his life moments after killing his love.

Sudan scraps apostasy law and alcohol ban for non-Muslims

After more than 30 years of Islamist rule, Sudan has outlined wide-reaching reforms including allowing non-Muslims to drink alcohol, and scrapping the apostasy law and public flogging.

“We [will] drop all the laws violating the human rights in Sudan,” Justice Minister Nasredeen Abdulbari said.

A raft of new laws were passed last week but this is the first public explanation of their contents.

Sudan has also banned female genital mutilation (FGM).

Under the new laws, women no longer need permission from a male relative to travel with their children.

The reforms come after long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was ousted last year following massive street protests.

Non-Muslims are now allowed to consume alcohol in private, however the ban on Muslim drinking remains, Mr Abdulbari told state TV.

Non-Muslims could still be punished if they are caught drinking with Muslims, the Sudan Tribune reports him as saying.

He explained that the government was trying to safeguard the rights of the country’s non-Muslims, who constitute an estimated 3% of the population.

They are now allowed to drink, import and sell alcohol.

“We are keen to demolish any kind of discrimination that was enacted by the old regime and to move toward equality of citizenship and a democratic transformation,” he said.

The laws were initially approved in April but the BBC’s Mohamed Osman in Khartoum says they have only now taken effect.

Baby pops out, falls into pit latrine as woman unaware of her pregnancy answered call of nature

A 36-year-old woman from Machakos County, Kenya on Friday evening gave birth while answering a short call of nature at the Mwala Level 4 Hospital.

The woman, who lives with partial paralysis following a stroke, had been assisted by her teenage son to access the toilet, where she gave birth to a baby boy, and the newborn fell into the pit latrine.

After assisting her mother out of the toilet, the woman’s son heard a baby crying in the pit latrine, prompting him to alert nurses at the facility.

“We managed to get people to demolish the pit latrine and rescued the baby, who was alive. Preliminary examination indicates the new mother had carried the pregnancy to term,” Mwala Level 4 Hospital medical superintendent Dr. Stephen Kitheka told K24 Digital.

Dr. Kitheka says the woman, who is paralysed on the left side of her body, stated that she wasn’t aware of her pregnancy, or did not experience any labor pains prior to giving birth.

The doctor says the patient had come for physiotherapy sessions among other treatments for different ailments.

“After rescuing the baby, we admitted the mother-and-child to a ward, where they were closely monitored. The infant was accorded emergency care, and is now in stable condition. It is actually breast-feeding,” said Dr. Kitheka.

Medical News Today says a situation where a woman carries a pregnancy to term without knowing that she was expectant is known as cryptic pregnancy.

Sometimes the woman will realise she is pregnant when she is in the third trimester or only when she goes into labor.

Fraudster detains American lady in Lagos hotel, defrauds her of N18.5m

Police operatives have rescued a citizen of the United States of America who was allegedly confined to a Lagos hotel against her wish for over one year.

The victim, who came from Washington DC, arrived in Nigeria on February 13, 2019, on a visit to 34-year-old Chukwuebuka Obiaku, a native of Ikeduru LGA of Imo State, whom she met on Facebook.

The retired civil servant reportedly lost about N18.5m to Obiaku, who allegedly took control of her credit and debit cards, as well as the operation of her bank accounts.

The suspect also allegedly took receipt of the American’s monthly retirement benefits and allowances for 15 months.

This is happening a few weeks after the police similarly rescued a Filipino woman, who was lured to Nigeria by her supposed lover whom she equally met on Facebook.

This is happening a few weeks after the police similarly rescued a Filipino woman, who was lured to Nigeria by her supposed lover whom she equally met on Facebook.

According to a statement on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, investigations show that Obiaku, a graduate of Business Administration and Management, is an Internet fraudster who has defrauded many unsuspecting members of the public, both locally and internationally.

Obiaku allegedly lured the victim into the country on the pretext of love and deceitfully married her on May 15, 2019.

“He subsequently held her captive in a hotel, extorted from her money amounting to a total of $48,000. He also forcefully collected and took control of her credit and debit cards, as well as the operation of her bank accounts, including the receipt of her monthly retirement benefits and allowances over the period of 15 months,” the police said.

The statement disclosed that the suspect also used the victim as a front to defraud her associates and other foreign personalities and companies.

The unidentified victim was reportedly rescued by police operatives attached to the Intelligence Response Team, Ogun State annex, following information received from a Nigerian in the Meiran area of Lagos State.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Cybercrime Unit, INTERPOL National Central Bureau, Abuja, has arrested three suspects, Samson Inegbenesun, 30; Blessed Junior, 32; and Muhammed Zakari, 36; all from Uromi in Edo State, for cybercrime-related offences, including advance fee fraud, money laundering and romance scam.

Three weeks after going for COVID-19 test, I’m still waiting for the result– 67-year-old Ibadan businessman

Ibadan-based businessman, Mr Omololu Akinyosoye, tells Punch that he has been told that one needs to lobby to get the result of coronavirus test

Why did you go for a COVID-19 test?

I had a friend who died of COVID-19 and I had contact with him three or four days before he died. My late friend had thought he had malaria, but it was when he got to hospital that he was told that he had COVID-19. He died about three days later. So, I thought to myself that it would be best to get tested so that I could save my life in case I had been infected. Since I lived in Ibadan, I put a call through to the Oyo State COVID-19 emergency number and I was asked to go get tested immediately and that was what I did.

When did you go for the test?

I had the test precisely on June 18, 2020. I did it at the Jericho Specialist Hospital, Ibadan.

What was the test centre like when you visited?

There was a canopy outside, where we were attended to. The place looked untidy. There was no professionalism. There was disorder there. In fact, there was no privacy for any patient. You would just be called upon and you would have to reveal your medical history, phone number and home address to the hearing of everyone. Everyone could pretty much hear about your medical history. I disagreed with them over this approach and I was given a form to fill.

How long did it take before you were attended to?

I waited in line. It took about 45 minutes before I was attended to and after I was tested, I was told that I could leave.

When did they tell you the test result would be ready?

They told me it would take two weeks. When I asked why, they said they would need to take the test samples to the University College Hospital, Ibadan. They said the result would not be out on time because Ondo State and others usually send samples to the UCH. In other words, the UCH has just one molecular lab, which many other states are using. I thought this to be pathetic. Anyway, they said they would contact me through the telephone or email.

What was your response when they told you to wait for two weeks?

I was angry but they said their hands were full. The UCH was meant only for Oyo State, but other states are also sending samples to it. They said they couldn’t handle the high demand. When I asked why they couldn’t set up more labs, they said this was what the government could afford.

Now that you don’t know your status, what have you been doing?

I’ve been following the guidelines. I wash my hands regularly and wear my face mask. I actually bought the N95, which is the most effective. That is what I wear. I don’t go out anymore. I stay at home. I only go out when it is absolutely necessary.

Now that it’s been three weeks without any response, what efforts have you made to get your result?

Three days ago, I went to the Governor’s Office. I was told Governor Seyi Makinde was not around so I requested to see his chief of staff, but I was told he was in a meeting. So, I was introduced to one Adebowale Falana, who happens to be an assistant to the chief of staff. When I narrated my predicament to him, he picked his phone and called the doctor at the hospital, where I did the test, and he asked why my test result was being delayed. The doctor said my test result would be sent to me as soon as possible. Mr Falana subsequently gave me his phone number. That was three days ago. I still have not received the test result. When I called Mr Falana, he said ‘What do you want me to do?’ and I responded, ‘I beg your pardon, what do I want you to do? I want my result. Why don’t you escalate it to the governor? The result ought to have been out by now. I don’t need to lobby for it’. He said he would call the doctor but there has been no development till now. It is atrocious.

 Have you been in isolation?

As I said earlier, I have been indoors. Fortunately, I live alone; so I am not in constant contact with anyone.

Given your experience, do you think Nigeria can win the fight against COVID-19?

This fight against COVID-19 is just a waste of time. In Ondo town, three people, who I knew, died while they were waiting for their results. Messages were sent to that they had tested positive after they had died. What is the purpose of taking a test when you may not live to see the result? In other countries, results are out between 24 and 48 hours. I have been waiting for three weeks. I will no longer plead with them for the result.

Nigeria has failed. I don’t think Nigeria can win this fight. Look at our population, which is about 200 million. How many people have they tested? We are chasing shadows. One day, I know we shall overcome. I am a fan of Governor Makinde, but he has failed as far as this COVID-19 response is concerned. Even Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State hasn’t done well. All samples are sent to Akure for testing. Samples are sent to the UCH.
