Sister wants death of Tolulope Arotile probed, as mother calls her a special child

Damilola Adegboye, the immediate elder sister of the late first female combat helicopter pilot in the history of Nigerian Air Force, Tolulope Arotile, has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Adegboye in an interview with The Punch on Thursday said the family is devastated by the untimely death wondering how the reverse of a vehicle could kill a person in such manner.

Arotile died as a result of head injuries sustained from a road traffic accident at NAF Base in Kaduna State.

Adegboye said, “We in the family are not convinced that Tolu can just die like that in a freak accident. I know that the military is well trained in the art of investigation, we want them to carry out a thorough investigation that can convince us beyond all doubts that the incident that led to her death was real.”

She said on the day of the incident, Arotile and herself were in the room where she was sleeping

“A call came into her phone which she picked but from the way they spoke, I knew the caller must be a senior officer calling her to come to Airforce base. She felt reluctant and I offered to drop her off.

“One hour later, I read online that something serious had happened to her. I couldn’t believe that somebody I just dropped off is dead,” she explained.

Also speaking, the mother of Arotile went down memory lane about how she gave birth to her describing her as a special child adding that fasting and prayer was her hobby.

Meanwhile the Kogi State House of Assembly has called on the state government to immortalise her.

Hospital owner arrested for issuing thousands of fake negative Coronavirus test results

A Bangladesh hospital owner accused of issuing thousands of fake negative coronavirus test results to patients at his two clinics was arrested on Wednesday while trying to flee to India in a burqa, police said.

The arrest marked the end of a nine-day manhunt for Mohammad Shahed over allegations of issuing fake certificates to patients saying they were virus-free without even testing them.

Shahed, 42, was one of more than a dozen people detained by authorities over the past few days in connection with the scam.

Experts warn the false documents have worsened the already dire situation in the country of 168 million people by casting doubt about the veracity of certificates issued by clinics.

"He was arrested from the bank of a border river as he was trying to flee to India. He was wearing a burqa," Rapid Action Battalion spokesman Colonel Ashique Billah told the AFP news agency.

"His hospitals carried out 10,500 coronavirus tests, out of which 4,200 were genuine and the rest, 6,300 test reports, were given without conducting tests."

Shahed is also accused of charging for the certificates and COVID-19 treatments even though he had agreed with the government that his hospitals in the capital Dhaka would provide free care.

The alleged scams could badly hurt migrant workers seeking to go abroad and whose remittances are key to Bangladesh's economy, said Shakirul Islam of migrant rights group OKUP.

Italy last week suspended flights to Rome from Bangladesh to stem the spate of coronavirus cases. Several passengers arriving from Dhaka had tested positive for COVID-19.

Fearing possible infections in the Bangladeshi immigrant community, authorities in Lazio region conducted "blanket testing" for the coronavirus. Italy is home to more than 100,000 Bangladeshis, according to national statistics institute ISTAT.

"Some of the Bangladeshis who were tested positive in Italy were allegedly carrying negative COVID certificates from Bangladesh," Islam claimed.

Boko Haram terrorists demands N20m ransom from 75-year-old visually impaired man to release abducted daughter, niece

Boko Haram terrorists have asked a 75-year-old visually impaired man living in an internally displaced persons camp in Borno State to pay N20m as ransom for his abducted daughter and niece.

Jato Ndarfa, who fled from Gwoza in 2014 after Boko Haram terrorists invaded his village, killing more than 100 people and is now taking refuge at the CAN Center IDP Camp in Maiduguri, asked the Nigerian Government to intervene and ensure the release of members of his family.

He said the terrorists made contact through his niece's phone.

Ndarfa said his daughter is Lami Jato, a 25-year-old graduate of Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, and his niece is Renita Bitrus.

Both were abducted by the terrorists while on a farm at Tungushe Village in the Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State.

He said, “It was two of them; my daughter, Lami Jato and my niece, Renita Bitrus, who is married with two children; that were abducted by the Boko Haram terrorists.

“It is 15 days now since they were abducted when they went to the farm in Tungushe along the Maiduguri-Monguno Road.

“Initially, they were seven in number at the farm where they were abducted but the terrorists later released four of the men and held one male, the tractor driver, and the two women.”

I won’t accept any disrespect to National Assembly – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned all his appointees that he would not accept any act of disrespect to the National Assembly.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President handed down the warning while receiving the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The statement was titled ‘President Buhari reads riot act to ministers, MDAs, Chief Executives on relationship with NASS.’

Recall that the National Assembly and the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, were at loggerheads recently over the proposed 774,000 jobs.

Keyamo had engaged members of the Senate and House of Representatives committee in a shouting match on the matter.

But according to the statement, the President asked ministers and all heads of departments and agencies to, at all times, conduct themselves in ways that will not undermine the National Assembly as an institution, its leadership and members.

The statement read, “In the course of their conversation, recent events at the National Assembly were highlighted and the President re-emphasised his utmost respect for the National Assembly, adding that any disrespect to the institution by any member of the executive branch will not be accepted.

“Ministers and all heads of departments and agencies should at all times conduct themselves in ways that will not undermine the National Assembly as an institution, its leadership and members.”

Lawan who spoke in the presence of Gbajabiamila , noted that the current National Assembly had so far had a cordial relationship with the Executive arm, attributing it to the President.

He said, “If you are an appointee of the President, you are supposed to be reflective of the attitude of the President towards the National Assembly.”

Fight erupts inside and outside Taiwan parliament

Fighting erupted inside and outside of Taiwan’s parliament again on Friday over the disputed nomination by President Tsai Ing-wen of a senior aide to a top government watchdog post.

The main opposition party labelled the appointment cronyism.

The Kuomintang (KMT) has mounted a noisy campaign against the nomination of Chen Chu to head the Control Yuan, an independent government watchdog.

The KMT, soundly beaten by Tsai and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in elections in January, this week occupied parliament’s main chamber for three days, trying to thwart Chen from taking the post.

Several KMT lawmakers knocked down voting booths inside the chamber to block DPP legislators from casting ballots over the nomination.

KMT has accused the DPP of cheating in part of the vote on nomination this week.

The voting on Friday went ahead despite shouting and protests from KMT lawmakers, who held banners reading “invalid vote”.

About 100 KMT supporters outside parliament fought with police and some tried to break through barricades, calling on the DPP to withdraw the nomination.

“Rejection to cronyism. Withdraw the nomination,” KMT Chairman Johnny Chiang told supporters on the back of a truck outside the parliament.

Taiwan is a boisterous, sometimes unruly democracy. Punch-throwing and rowdy protests are not uncommon in parliament.

Trump niece’s memoir sells nearly 1 mn copies on first day

A new book on Donald Trump written by his niece sold nearly a million copies on the first day it went on sale in the United States, its publisher said Thursday.

Mary Trump's "Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man" is billed as the first unflattering portrayal of the US president by a family insider.

Mary, a psychologist whose father was Trump's oldest brother Fred, accuses the president of hubris and ignorance, and says he fits the clinical criteria for being a narcissist.

The 950,000 copies sold Tuesday, including pre-orders as well as audio and digital versions, "is a company record" for the Simon & Schuster publishing house, it said in a statement.

The White House has dismissed the memoir as a "book of falsehoods".

The president's younger brother Robert Trump went to court to try to block publication, arguing that Mary was violating a non-disclosure agreement signed in 2001 after the settlement of her grandfather's estate, but to no avail.

Simon & Schuster has ordered more copies printed, which will bring the number to 1.15 million for the American market alone. The book also tops Amazon's sales charts in Canada and Australia.

Canadian police kill 73-year-old man after refusing to wear face mask

A 73-year-old man was killed by police in Canada just hours after refusing to wear a face mask in a grocery store, the country's public broadcaster the CBC reported on Thursday

The man allegedly assaulted a grocery store employee on Wednesday after he was asked to follow laws about wearing face coverings to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the CBC said, citing Ontario police.

The man refused, according to an employee at the store in Minden, about 200km north of Toronto, and fled after the incident.

Police were called but did not stop the suspect's car "in the interest of public safely", they said. Instead, they used his license plate to find his house.

Two officers were involved in the shooting, which was also confirmed by an independent investigation.

The man died shortly after being transported to a hospital, according to a statement from Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The man's identity is still unknown.

Mum of 8 year-old girl'r*ped and killed by married couple' hopes they 'end up in hell'

The mum of a girl who was kidnapped, r*ped and murdered just days before her ninth birthday says she hopes her daughter's killers "end up in hell".

Married couple Igor and Kristina Dvornikov have been charged in the killing of Vika Teplyakova, whose body was found dumped in a forest after they offered her a ride.

In her first interview, Vika's grief-stricken mum Ulyana said her only hope is the suspects suffer the "most terrible and painful" fate, are never released from custody and wind up in the depths of hell after they take their final breaths.

Vika ran away from home following a row and was walking alone next to a road when she was picked up by the Dvornikovs, who spotted her as they drove by, according to police.

Vika, who was missing for three days before her body was found, would have celebrated her ninth birthday on Sunday.

Instead of celebrating her birthday, her devastated family will bury her on Monday.

Mum Ulyana said she is struggling to cope with her grief and she is taking sedatives because she is so overwhelmed by the pain of losing her daughter in such a brutal way.

The mum, from Novoaleksandrovsk, Russia, told Life: "Of course, I would like the most severe punishment so that these people are never released.

"All I can wish for is the most terrible and painful punishment for these people. I do not hide it.

"I hope the punishment is as strict as possible and I hope that soon these people will end up in hell."

Ulyana said her daughter was well-behaved and friendly, and loved to play football, sing and record videos.

75-year old mom and daughter, 56, fight over man in Russia

A bizarre love triangle is making shock headlines in Russia after a 75-year-old woman allegedly stole her daughter's man.

Mum and daughter are said to be engaged in a tug of war for the same bloke after he dumped the younger woman in order to live with the septuagenarian.

Outspoken grandmother Galina Zhukovskaya is from the St Petersburg city in the western Russian region of Leningrad Oblast.

She married her daughter's ex-husband back in 2010 after developing a friendship with him when she claims her daughter cheated on him, forcing him to leave his family.

But Zhukovskaya is now complaining her daughter, Elena Podgornaya, 56, is trying to lure her ex-husband, Vyacheslav Zhukovsky, 52, to return.

The granny claimed to local media her daughter was unlucky in love and had not managed to find anybody new.

She has alleged she was jealous of her success with her ex-husband and is trying to lure him back because "she is bored".

Contacted by Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, Zhukovkaya claimed the daughter even sent her granddaughter to try and seduce her husband.

She claimed to the paper: "She wants us to separate.

"She often sends her 30-year-old daughter, born from another man, to get intimate with him."

Zhukovkaya continued: "My daughter is probably jealous that mum is not alone. I have someone to talk to and she doesn't. But he won't get back to her. She cheated on him too much."

The woman married her son-in-law back in 2010 when Vyacheslav decided to leave her daughter due to allegations of infidelity.

When Podgornaya demanded he leave the marital home, her mum offered the man, Vyacheslav, a place to stay and that resulted in a love match which ended in marriage.

Drama as NDDC acting MD walks out on Reps

The acting Managing Director of Interim Management Committee (IMC) the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei and his team today walked out on the House of Representatives Committee on NDDC.

He said he and the team were not prepared to make any presentation before the committee.

Pondei had abjected to Chairman of the Committee, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, presiding over the investigative hearing, insisting he cannot preside over a matter in which he is an accused.

Members of the Committee, including Benjamin Kali, Ben Ibakpa and Shehu Koko, told the Acting MD that since there was no document before them, he is constitutionally bound to answer their queries.

While members were still making contribution on the issue, the Acting MD sought permission to leave and walked out before the committee could grant or reject his request.

Furious members of the Committee accused the Interim Management Committee of trying to frustrate legislative functions and ordered a warrant of arrest be issued against him.

The Committee also unanimously passed a vote of confidence on its Chairman.

The presenter told Channel 5's Jeremy Vine that she had it on "good authority" that the Duchess of Sussex intends to run for office.

Meghan and Prince Harry moved back to the United States in January and have have been vocal on a number of political matters such as Black Lives Matter and climate change.

Ms Turner replied: "I have it on fairly good authority that she would like to run for President

"There may be worse Presidents, I would like to see a mixed-race woman in the White House, I would."
