Magu May Be Demoted As Cabal Moves To Crush Tinubu

Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), risks demotion from his rank of Commissioner of Police to either Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) or Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) if found guilty of the allegations leveled against him.

Magu, who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 to lead his administration’s anti-corruption efforts, was promoted to the rank of a full commissioner from deputy commissioner in April 2018 by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Following a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari by Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Magu was arrested on July 6 by security operatives at the Abuja zonal office of the commission on his way to a meeting and taken before the Justice Ayo Salami-led presidential investigative panel.

The panel, sitting at the old Banquet Hall in Aso Villa, Abuja was set up by Buhari to investigate alleged mismanagement of recovered assets by the EFCC between May 2015 and May 2020 under Magu’s stewardship.

After 10 days in custody at Area 10, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Magu, who has since been replaced by Mohammed Umar, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), was released on bail last week.

Speaking with Daily Independent, a top security source, who has been following the development, said there is no way Magu can be exonerated from the allegations against him and the likelihood of his returning to his position as EFCC chairman is “very remote”.

According to him, Magu’s chances of being exonerated is very unlikely “since the allegations against him is coming from the supervising minister in charge of the agency he heads, that is the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami. It is a different thing if the petition came from the opposition parties or civil society organisations.

“No public official can escape a hostile investigation such as the one he is being subjected to. He may have committed some infractions no doubt. But those behind the probe are also not clean”, he said.

When asked if the trial has any political undertone, our source replied in the affirmative, saying some people in the establishment are unhappy over Magu’s refusal to investigate the petitions written against Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Our source also said beyond what was stated the trial also has to do with the battle for the 2023 presidential election.

“It has everything to do with 2023. They see him as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s man. Some persons within the system wants EFCC to go after him which Magu has failed to do”, he said.

Daily Independent in its July 10, 2020 edition titled ‘How Petitions On Tinubu’s Bullion Vans Landed Magu In Trouble’ had already reported that “beyond what was publicly stated in Malami’s memo to the president, one major issue against Magu is his perceived selective investigation and refusal to investigate the bullion vans allegations even though President Buhari, who has made the war against corruption one of the three cardinal agenda of his administration, had given him “unfettered access to go all out and probe anyone irrespective of his status in the society”.

When asked if Magu can return to his position, our source said with a tone of finality, “He can never return. He is gone for good, In fact he may be recommended for demotion to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police or Assistant Commissioner of Police”.

Our source also said aside the memo from Malami, Magu had been having issues with the Police Service Commission, the body saddled with the responsibility of dismissing and exercising disciplinary control over police officers in the country, except the IGP.

He said, “The DSS report of 2016 that allegedly indicted Magu said in December 2010, the Police Service Commission (PSC) found Magu guilty of action prejudicial to state security – withholding of EFCC files, sabotage, unauthorised removal of EFCC files and acts unbecoming of a police officer, and awarded him severe reprimand as punishment”.

Recall that Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, pioneer chairman of the EFCC was also demoted from the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in August 2008.

I Regret Making Obaseki Governor - Oshiomhole

Immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in his Iyamho residence, Etsako West Local Government Area said he made a grave mistake bringing Governor Godwin Obaseki as his successor in 2016 even as he said with his defection and that of his deputy to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, “the bad heads in our party are gone”

Oshiomhole stated this when he addressed a crowd of party supporters and faithful who thronged his residence yesterday evening after a similar scenario when he came home from Bening City on Saturday night adding that those that were bent on destroying the APC in the state have been “smoked out.”

He said Obaseki, used every obnoxious means, including the destruction of properties and unwarranted arrest of members, to destroy the party in the state saying “The Governor was demolishing the houses of our members while some were being jailed for trump up charges; these are the people who fought for him to become governor.

“I begged those who were being persecuted to take it easy, that they shouldn’t burn the house we all laboured to build because we want to smoke out the snake and now, the snake has been smoked out of the house.

“Few weeks earlier, the snake said APC was his house and that he was not leaving, but less than 72 hours after saying this, he left.If we had burnt the house because the snake was giving us problem, we will all have been homeless by now.”

He said his immediate task now is to ensure victory of the party come September 19. “I have come home for only one project, I am not going back to Abuja until the project is completed.

“I came back home not to rest, but to work. We are political lions, we must commit ourselves to returning Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to Osadebe Avenue.”He said the people should judge the present government with what they see and not what they hear.

According to him, “there have been no tangible development since we left government, all they have to show for almost four years are MOUs and ear mark projects while we had eye marks projects.

“This was how they brought the respected Vice President to Benin to groundbreaking for an industrial park that we will never see. Same also goes to that of Gelegele Port.”

Presidency Speaks On Magu: 'Be Prepared For Shocking Revelations'

The presidency told Nigerians on Sunday to prepare for shocking revelations from the presidential panel probing the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, for alleged graft and insubordination.

The Justice Ayo Salami-led panel is expected to submit its report to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Magu was arrested on July 6 over alleged corruption and other related offences.
He was accused of re-looting assets recovered by the commission from suspected treasury looters.

The suspended EFCC chief also allegedly failed to account for interest accruing to N550bn recovered by the anti-graft agency under his watch.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, who disclosed this on a Channels Television’s programme, “Politics Today,” said the presidency had been receiving some little updates from the panel, adding that the findings would surprise Nigerians.

He also asked Nigerians to ignore the outbursts of certain persons who had questioned the government’s inquest into the allegations against the anti-graft czar.

On claims by Magu’s lawyers that the probe was a witch-hunt, the presidential aide said: “I guess this is a question for the Justice Ayo Salami panel and I must say that panel is composed of some of this country’s most honoured people with integrity who will do the right thing.

“I am not going to pre-empt the panel investigation but I just advice Nigerians to hold their hearts in their hands. By the time they are done with this job and they come out with the reports prepare yourselves for surprises.

“I don’t know what will come out but if the sense we are getting from what is being done over there is anything to go by, I think that Nigerians should not be confused by any outbursts by anybody.”

Policewoman, daughter, four others kidnapped in Kaduna

Suspected kidnappers have abducted a policewoman, her daughter and four others at Janruwa, Patrick Yakowa way area of Kaduna metropolis.

The incident, according to eye witnesses, happened in the late hours of Saturday when the bandits stormed the community and started breaking into houses in commando style.

An eyewitness, Mr. Babalola Mathew, said: “It was a commando like adventure. They (bandits) stormed our community around past 10pm and raided four houses, kidnapped six people, including a woman, two young female teenagers, two young men and a grown up man.

“They picked most of the victims through the windows after shattering the window glasses and removing the burglaries. They ordered everyone out.

“The victims had no option than to follow the attackers gently because they were at risk of being shot in their rooms.

“The only grown up woman among those kidnapped was said to be a Policewoman.

“She heard when they were attempting to break into her house, so she ran out, not knowing that they (bandits) were many outside.

“So, those waiting outside her house just picked her. Her daughter, putting on only a small wrapper around her chest, who also followed her mother was equally taken.

“The kidnappers did not stop there, they also went inside her house to ransack the house, but her other children, a boy and another girl had ran into hiding,” Mathew narrated.

Notorious Canadian gangster assassinated in shower of bullets one year after he survived similar attack and 3 years after his brother was killed

A notorious Canadian mobster has been assassinated in a hail of bullets three years after his brother was shot dead - and a year after he survived a similar attack.

Pasquale 'Fat Pat' Musitano, 53, was gunned down at a Burlington, Ontario, parking lot in broad daylight at around 1pm on Friday, while meeting with two associates.

A grey sedan sped off and Musitano's friends Giuseppe 'Pino' Avignone, 59 and John Clary, 77, gave chase, The National Post reported.

They were also shot at during the carnage and Clary, Musitano's longtime bodyguard, was wounded and rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The newer model four-door saloon - similar in appearance to an Infiniti Q50 - made off successfully and no arrests have been made.

The boss is presumed to have been conducting business face-to-face with Avignone and Clary because his hulking GMC Yukon had been armour-plated and fitted with inch-thick glass a few months before his brother's murder three years ago.

Angelo Musitano, 39, was shot dead in the driveway of his home in Waterdown in May, 2017, and a few weeks later an attempt was made on Pat.

And in April last year yet another assassination bid had failed against Pat, despite him being peppered by four bullets in a parking lot, one hitting him in the head.

'He was a dead man walking,' one Hamilton police officer told the Post.

Pat and his younger brother had been marked men since the deaths of John 'Johnny Pops' Papalia, a made man in Buffalo's Cosa Nostra, and one of his lieutenants Carmen Barillaro, in 1997.

Ken Murdock, the gunman in both murders, was hauled in and cooperated with police, informing detectives that Pat had ordered the hits.

Pat and his brother Angelo were later arrested and, unable to shut Murdock up, agreed to a plea bargain.

They would admit to conspiracy to murder Barillaro if the charges facing them for Papalia's killing were dropped.

In 2000, the brothers were jailed for 10 years each for their roles in Papalia's murder.

Upon release from prison in 2007, their grip on power had waned.

John Ross, a retired Hamilton police sergeant, was tasked with monitoring Pat's parole and met with him as soon as he was freed.

'I let him know straight up - the likelihood of your survival is certainly limited now. And he knew,' Ross told the Post. 'This end was inevitable, for sure - and Pat knew it.'

Man suffers huge facial injuries after a bear attacked him in his kitchen [photos]

A man who was attacked by a bear in Colorado has been speaking out about the harrowing encounter which left him with lacerations across his face and neck.

Dave Chernosky, 54, heard a noise coming from the downstairs of the Aspen home he and his family were staying at, early on Friday morning.

'I was asleep and heard something in the kitchen. And I just kind of laid there thinking, "Okay, something's wrong,"' Chernosky told Good Morning America.

'So I went to the kitchen, saw the bear there. He was already in the fridge and cupboards and stuff like that.'

'My kids were in the basement, so I wanted to make sure he stayed upstairs,' he said.

Chernosky described the bear as being dark brown in color but close to 450lbs in weight.

Fearing for his family's safety, the dad-of-two tried coaxing the black bear into the garage.

However, when he hit the garage door opener to let it out, the bear panicked and ran back inside the home and began attacking him.

'I literally thought I might be dead,' he said to ABC11. 'It felt like a brick hit me in the head.'

'As soon as we looked at each other, he just smacked me with his paw one time… and after I got out of the way and started yelling, he left,' said Chernosky.

He was left with severe cuts on his face and neck after the attack.

'Luckily, the bear wasn't really after me,' he said with some relief.

Chernosky quickly called 911.

'A bear came in here and he hit me with his paw so I'm bleeding,' he told operators.

Chernosky ended up being taken to Aspen Valley Hospital and then transferred by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction.

He had to have stitches placed along his cheek, jaw, ear and back. Overall, he is expected to make a full recovery.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife area manager Matt Yamashita said officers responded to the incident at about 3am and are investigating how the bear managed to get in.

Officials with the department say they were able to find the bear and euthanize it.

It's the second bear attack in the last couple of days.

On Saturday morning, a woman was attacked by one near Manitou Springs, which lies about 80 miles south of Denver.

The wildlife officers caught the bear near the scene of the attack using trained hounds.

It was then put it down in what was described as ‘humane’ euthanasia.

27-year old teacher is charged with rape and sodomy after having sex with a 17-year old student

A high school teacher from Kentucky has been charged with r3pe and sodomy for allegedly having s3x with a 17-year-old student and sending inappropriate messages to another teenager.

Mollie Verkamp, 27, from Florence, was arrested last Thursday following a year-long investigation by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives first learned of Verkamp's alleged relationship with a student in May 2019 when officials at Walton Verona High School, where she was employed at the time, reported that the teacher was sending sexually explicit videos and text messages to one of their 18-year-old students.

When interviewed by law enforcement officials, Verkamp reportedly admitted to sending the same kind of sexually explicit messages to a 17-year-old student at Grant County High School, where she had previously taught for two years.

The teacher allegedly acknowledged that she knew the age of the student, and that being a teacher at the same school made her a person in a position of authority.

'Despite that, her relationship with the 17 year old evolved from sending and receiving messages to having sex with him at her home in Boone County,' according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

Verkamp was indicted by a Boone County Grand Jury on one count of third-degree rape and one count of sodomy.

She was booked into the county jail and released the same day after posting $10,000 bond.

She was no longer a school district employee during the 2019-2020 academic year. Instead, she earned a living working as a yoga instructor, according to divorce records obtained by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The paper reported that Verkamp's husband filed for divorce last December.

In a letter to parents sent last week, Walton-Verona Independent Schools Superintendent Matt Baker said officials contacted the authorities as soon as they learned of the allegations concerning Verkamp.

White judge sends 15-year old black girl to juvenile detention for not doing her homework

A 15-year-old girl from Michigan is currently in a juvenile detention facility for failing to complete her homework amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The teen, who is referred to as 'Grace' in a ProPublica article published about the incident, was sent to the Children's Village detention center in Detroit on May 14 after a judge declared that the youngster's failure to complete school work had violated the terms of her parole.

Last year, Grace was charged with stealing another student's cellphone and assaulting her own mother during a row.

Grace's mother, referred to by the pseudonym 'Charissa' in the ProPublica article, told the publication that her daughter immediately expressed remorse over her actions.

Charissa explained that Grace suffers from ADHD, and that the pair had begun family therapy after the assault.

During sentencing in April, Grace tearfully begged judge Mary Ellen Brennan not to send her to a juvenile detention facility.

'My mom and I do get into a lot of arguments, but with each one I learn something and try to analyze why it happened,' the teen sobbed.

'My mom and I are working each day to better ourselves and our relationship, and I think that the removal from my home would be an intrusion on our progress.'

Judge Brennan instead sentenced her to strict probation that included the completion of all schoolwork.

However, with schools ordered closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Grace's routine was upended, and her caseworker, Rachel Giroux, soon became concerned that classwork was not being done.

In an email penned to Giroux, Grace's teacher wrote: 'Let me be clear that this is no one's fault because we did not see this unprecedented global pandemic coming.

'Grave has a strong desire to do well... [and] is trying to get to the other side of a steep learning curve mountain and we have a plan for her to get there'.

However, Grace failed to complete all schoolwork in the subsequent weeks, prompting Grioux to file a violation of probation.

'She clearly doesn't want to abide by the rules in the community,' Giroux wrote.

On May 14, Judge Brennan ordered Grace to Children's Village. She claimed the sentence was not intended to be a punishment, but would rather be an opportunity for the teen to get treatment and services.

However, Grace was escorted out of the courtroom in handcuffs and ankle shackles.

Charisse said watching her daughter being taken away was particularly traumatic given that they are both black.

'For us and our culture, that for me was the knife stuck in my stomach and turning,' Charisse told ProPublica.

'That is our history, being shackled. And she didn't deserve that.'

Charisse shared a heartbreaking letter handwritten by Grace inside the detention center.

'I want to change. I want to be a better person. Here I've realized how much you care and love me. I'm sorry I took that for granted. Please continue to send me pictures of me and you or just with anyone. I love you mommy and I miss you,' the letter reads.

Grace will remain inside Children's Village until a new hearing is held on September 8.

Two months after, Niger palliatives still in store

Members of the Niger Assembly have expressed dismay over the hoarding of Covid-19 pallatives by the State Covid-19 Task Force.

The legislators wondered why the foodstuff were still in store rather than distributed to residents still feeling residual effects of the lockdown.

Chairman of the House of Assembly Ad-hoc Committee on Covid-19, Hon Malik Madaki Bosso, raised the alarm during an oversight function to the Covid-19 isolation centres and food stores in the state.

The legislators were told the Covid-19 Task Force received 88 trucks of palliatives from CACOVID-19 and three trucks of rice from the Federal Government.

But the food stuff still in the store include: 94,194 cartons of indomie; 47,611 cartoons of sugar; 9,000 bags  of 10kg rice; 43,311 cartoons of macaroni spaghetti; 3,150 bags of 50kg rice; 515 cartoons of indomie; 1,860 cartoons of spagetti; 1,236 of 5kg rice and 2,100 packs of 1kg semovita among others.

Bosso lamented the palliatives donated over two months ago to alleviate effects of the lockdown were yet to be distributed, adding they were not meant to be hoarded.

The legislator wondered why items that could have fed people were left in store at a time many were still hungry.

“If the food items have been kept here for over two months now and you said you are waiting for a distribution template from the donors, then you need to persuade them to come up with it as soon as possible.

“Our people are suffering and you know that hunger waits for none and we can’t just sit and watch our people going through hardship while food items are locked up in our stores,” he told the Task Force.

Bosso declared the committee would not fold its arms to see residents dying of hunger while directing the Task Force to present a monthly report of all activities henceforth.

Chairman of the Niger Task Force on COVID-19, Ahmed Matane, explained the palliatives were yet to be distributed because they were awaiting a template for ease of distribution.

“We have received 88 trucks of palliatives from CACOVID-19 and three trucks of rice from the Federal Government but we are still waiting for a template from the donors before distribution will commence,” he said.

Ekiti orders arrest of facemask defaulters

The Ekiti Government says it will begin to arrest those refusing to wear facemasks in public places from Monday.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Wale Fapounda, on Sunday told newsmen in Ado Ekiti that there would henceforth be stiffer penalties for those who fail to comply.

The commissioner said Gov. Kayode Fayemi was particularly worried about the deliberate lack of compliance with most Covid-19 regulations in the state.

He said the governor had ordered full enforcement of all other Covid-19 regulations in the state.

The commissioner cited some of the precautionary regulations ignored by residents to include compulsory wearing of face masks in public places and observance of social distancing.

He explained further that mobile courts had been established to try offenders and impose adequate sanctions such as fines and community service.

The commissioner further explained that commercial motorcyclists as well as road transport workers whose passengers refused or neglect to wear face masks would be held liable.

Pay full salary or risk strike, Niger workers warn

Workers in Niger State have issued a seven-day ultimatum over payment of 70 per cent salary.

Chairman Trade Union Congress (TUC) Comrade Inusa Tanimu and Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of NLC, Comrade Mahmud Aminu Muye gave the ultimatum after the State Government paid 70 per cent of the workers’ salaries.

The government’s decision to reduce salaries workers by due to what it termed shortfall in the FAAC allocation.

But the workers insisted they would rather go hungry than receive pay cut.

Last Thursday and Friday, the Government went ahead to pay 70 per cent of the workers’ salaries.

Tanimu expressed disappointment with the development, vowing they will embark on a three-day warning strike after expiration of the ultimatum to press home their demands.

Muye, on his part, described government’s action as illegal and unacceptable, lamenting with 30 per cent salary slash, most Civil Servants will be left with nothing to take home after bank deduction and settlement of loans.

Sanusi Hits Nigerian Leaders, Says Incompetence, Nepotism Fuelling Corruption

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and immediate past Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, has said corruption will continue to fester in the country if incompetent persons occupy leadership positions and if there is nepotism in the system.

He stated that these would also continue to hinder the country’s development, noting that if citizens did not consider merit and competence in choosing their leaders, the country would make no progress.

Speaking on Friday at a webinar themed, ‘The sustainability of society’, organised by the Emmanuel Chapel, Sanusi explained that inasmuch as the Federal Character principle enshrined in the Constitution has to be followed, the best brains from the different parts of the country should be appointed or elected into public office.

He said, “Morally and religiously speaking, corruption is a problem. But let us look at it from the angle of economics and we (would) begin to understand that it is not just the corruption itself but the type of corruption.

“Part of the problem we have is incompetence and that is why I keep saying we must pay attention to merit. We have a system called Federal Character and I believe we should have Nigerians from all over the country in public office, but all those Nigerians must be people that are competent. There must be a merit test; a competence test.

“For me, I think the root of corruption is when we begin to de-emphasise merit, competence and performance and so long as we don’t bring the best in this country to do the job and hold them to account, we won’t go anywhere.

“The worst form of corruption we have in this country is nepotism; when people get into positions by virtue of personal loyalty, friendship and who they know, rather than what they can actually deliver by virtue of their competence for that office. We need people who can deliver for this country, I mean the majority.”

Meanwhile, when asked by one of the moderators the three fundamental catalytic reforms he felt could catapult Nigeria to a better place within the next seven to 10 years, Sanusi identified political reforms, especially the amendment of the Constitution to reduce the cost of governance and promote efficiency.

He added, “The second thing, which is extremely important, is that we must respect merit and the third thing is we need patience and we, especially those of us not in government, should put in our contributions that would help the leaders manage those challenges.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mrs Amina Mohammed, was also a panellist at the webinar, which was moderated by Prof Konyinsola Ajayi (SAN) and the Managing Director & Chief Investment Officer, ARM Harith Infrastructure Fund Managers, Ms Tariye Gbadegesin.

NDDC Scandal: Akpabio, Amaechi, Others Test Might

A deeper investigation by Sunday Independent into the crisis engulfing the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has exposed multiple components carefully or chestrated by powerful forces beyond the Niger Delta region.

According to our sources, these forces are merely using the services of cronies in the oil-producing states to milk up the commission for the lubrication of their political wheels.

APC/PDP Factor In South South
As it stands at the moment, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been dislodged from the South-South geo-political zone, with the defection of the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Independent sources said this is not a palatable pill for the ruling APC at the centre.

“What this portrays is that with power blocs like the Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo- Agege, holding sway, they want to control the political soul of the South-South.

“Doing so also means that so much funds would be needed to prosecute any political ambition. Hence, NDDC remains the only and viable cash cow to draw billions from to keep such ambition alive.

“With the ouster of the former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, from that exotic position, the aforementioned trio are currently squaring up to undo one another and emerge the political leader of the zone,” said one of our credible sources.

It was alleged that the screened board of the NDDC was dominated by representatives of Amaechi and Omo- Agege.

The three powerful positions of Managing Director, Executive Director of Project and Finance were to be occupied by candidates of these influential forces.

Also, the governorship election of Delta State has been linked to the raging crisis and looting in the NDDC.

Delta 2023 Governorship Election
It was gathered that as much as Senator Omo-Agege is seriously eyeing the governorship of Delta State, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Executive Director, Projects, of the NDDC, is equally preparing to confront anyone standing on his way of becoming the next state’s chief executive.

The Acting Managing Director of the NDDC, Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei, in one of his press conferences, alluded to the fact that the governorship election in Delta State was part of the heat in the commission leading to the interventionist agency’s looting spree.

He said every finger is in the tilt to grab the Delta State governorship seat.

Our sources explained that although Akpabio may not eye the governorship position of Akwa Ibom State again, he has a name to protect.

“He wants to replicate his performance while he lasted as governor in the Niger Delta region as a supervising minister. He too wants to control the political soul of the region, hence other forces to contend with,” explained our source.

Northern Influence
There is also the palpable fear in some quarters that the ongoing crisis spiraling the NDDC has an invisible thread linking some powerful northern Fulani forces.

It was scooped that what befell the Amnesty Programme after the sack of Professor Charles Dokubo, where an administrator was appointed instead, may befall the NDDC.

A credible source hinted that the petitions against the financial recklessness in the NDDC maybe a well and tactfully coordinated arrangement to sow a seed of discord in the commission.

“The underpinning power play is basically to dissolve the present composition of the commission to make way for an administrator. This disposition would be very detrimental to the Niger Delta region in terms of infrastructural development.

“By extension, therefore, this same administrator would open the NDDC vault for the release of funds for the 2023 general elections in line with the choice of the APC on who becomes the presidential candidate of the party.

“A South-South minister is already said to have positioned himself to become a running mate to a serving northern governor in 2023. Billions would be needed for that project. And NDDC is the surest pool.

According to another source, in the last general elections, billions of naira were withdrawn from the NDDC to sponsor the polls.

He said the same forces wanted to cover any of the oil-producing states by all mean possible, hence, the billions.

“This may be part of the reasons why the commission cannot account for some of the monies allegedly spent or mismanaged,” the source stressed.

Besides that, it was also gathered that about 60 percent of de-silting jobs in the NDDC are carried out by people from other regions, particularly north.

“What is going on is that they are using the South-South people to rebel against themselves and cause confusion everywhere to divert attention. The Niger Delta will not grow beyond what it is except politicians from the region change their orientation,” the source noted.

Why NASS Is Probing Commission
Akpabio’s insistence on the forensic audit of the commission is basically the vector that has pitched the IMC against the National Assembly.

Some accused lawmakers are alleged to be using some cronies to attack the commission’s management and impede its administration.

It was also gathered that some legislators had asked the IMC to part with some billions of naira for them to share, a request the commission refused to grant, hence, the face-off.

Presently, the raging war of words between Akpabio and the former Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Joi Nunieh, is part of the game of confusion carefully crafted by the forces behind the scene.

Akpabio has said that the forensic audit must go on as planned to fulfill the desire of President Muhammadu Buhari in repositioning the Niger Delta region.

South-South Governors’ Position
Meanwhile, the South- South Governors Forum on Thursday declared its support for the forensic audit of the NDDC as ordered by President Buhari.

The Forum regretted the crisis rocking the commission and said that it was convinced and expecting that the audit would serve to put the NDDC on sound corporate governance and reposition it to better deliver on its mandate to the betterment of the region.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Delta state, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, said the Niger Delta governors had given full backing to the ongoing investigation of the commission by the Senate.

“We believe the Senate is operating within its oversight functions through the ad hoc committee set up for that purpose. It behooves us to respect the Senate oversight function and allow it to discharge this responsibility in a fair, transparent and equitable manner.

“The South-South Governors are desirous to see an NDDC that is fully alive and responsive to its mandate of accelerating infrastructural development of the Niger Delta region and enhancing the general living conditions of our people. Hence, we will not hesitate to give our unqualified support to any policy initiative that will make this a reality.

“The Forum wishes to advise the combatants in the current crisis in the NDDC to refrain from utterances and actions that will breach the peace and security of the region,” the forum stated.

It condemned the attempted abduction of Nunieh, in the early hours of Thursday, saying it was unwarranted, unnecessary and uncalled for.

Stakeholders Kick
Miffed by the daunting revelations from the NDDC, the Pan-Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF) has called on President Buhari to immediately wade into the crisis rocking the commission and save it from further plunging into decadence.

Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, a chieftain of PANDEF, said the crisis involving Akpabio and Joi Nunieh was “a disgrace and shame to the Niger Delta people.”

He said those that want the forensic audit to be aborted are those stealing the commission blind.

Sara-Igbe noted that both the National Assembly and the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC were responsible for the sleaze in the interventionist agency, adding, “the ongoing investigation must be carried out fast so that the commission can start all over again on a clean slate.”

Also, Annkio Briggs, spokesperson of the Ijaw Republic Assembly (IRA), acknowledged that NDDC has been a “cesspool of corruption” from inception. She alleged that the commission was not established to function properly for the development of the Niger Delta by those who mooted the idea in 2000.

“The game they are playing now is to scatter the NDDC and make the Niger Delta people to suffer the more. NDDC is a place where any party that is in power, whether APC or PDP, will send their people to go there and steal the money for their politics. That has been so from the time of former President (Olusegun) Obasanjo.”

Briggs advised that auditing firms from US, UK or Canada be invited to handle the auditing process which must be devoid of any form of influence by the government of the day.

On his part, the Executive Director, Global Forum for Accountability and Transparency, Joseph Ambakaderimo, said with the scandalous revelations coming out of the NASS probe of the NDDC, it becomes deeply troubling the way and manner the NDDC expends monies without recourse to prioritization of projects that will impact on the people of the region.

Ambakaderimo wants the revelations to be fully investigated and decisive and far reaching action taken to reposition the NDDC to better serve the people of the region.

“It has become abundantly clear that the IMC and the Minister who are charged with the responsibility of superintending the forensic audit have their hands in the vault. Therefore, we call for the discontinuation of this forensic audit and replace with the Justice Ayo Salami’s kind of panel.

“This is the appropriate time for the President to act swiftly on the NDDC as he did with the NSITF, EFCC and others. The NDDC cannot be treated in isolation when so many financial infractions are being committed on a daily basis. When we express our disgust on the attitude of the President on issues currently unfolding at the NDDC, we will continue to impress it on the President to do the needful and take the necessary action to stop the hemorrhaging at the NDDC.

“If one would ask without trying to preempt the outcome of the forensic audit, will the audit capture the mismanagement of resources that have come out as a result of the NASS probe? Once again we reiterate that if the President may decide not to discontinue the forensic audit, we urge the President to discountenance whatever the report that will emanate from the audit. The reason is that the report will not be all encompassing to trigger the desired outcome to achieve the purpose for which it was intended.”

Ambakaderimo noted that the minister and the IMC have this habit of trivialising very important issues of allegations of corruption levelled against them. Instead of addressing the issues of financial improprieties, they take pleasure in name calling.

“With all of these disclosures such as claims of giving monies to the Nigeria Police up to the tune of N475 million to buy sanitisers and face masks, and N3.14billion expenditure for COVID-19 pandemic palliatives to selected staff of the commission when their salaries subsists? The issue of attending graduation ceremony in the United Kingdom in the months when the entire world was on lockdown was as funny as it was unbelievable. The payment of scholarship grant into personal accounts of top officials of the commission, calls for an independent probe.

“These schemes follow a pattern that are ingrained in NDDC which have become institutionalise corruption, where the purported beneficiary agency of government does not get the items claimed to have been requested for. It is just a scheme to take out monies from the coffers of the commission and that is stealing directly from the treasury.

“We need to hear from the Nigeria Police what they actually got from the NDDC, is it cash or the physical items of sanitisers and face mask? These are questions that answers must be provided. Our investigations so far on this claim by the Ag MD on the police expenditure has not been corroborated by the police authorities.

“The tales of woes are beginning to crystallise on the real motive of Akpabio’s takeover of the NDDC and obsession has never been altruistic, we have to reiterate this and it is a shame that our own people are the ones working against the development of the region.

“Going forward, there is nowhere in the NDDC Act that says the minister must approve before payment are made to contractors or whom to be awarded contracts, the minister flagrantly arrogated to himself the powers he does not have all in a bid to ride roughshod on the finances of the commission.

“Akpabio failed with his handling of affairs in the NDDC. The NDDC is in the midst of one of the worst governing failures in history. The intervention has become terrible, also his lawlessness cannot be left unnoticed for too long. He has brought too many embarrassments to the President,” he alleged.

With President Buhari urging the National Assembly to speed up the ongoing investigations of the IMC, it is clear that the committee may eventually be disbanded and the commission itself removed from the Ministry of the Niger Delta back to the Presidency.

Killer of Flying Officer Arotile unveiled, case transferred to police

The Nigerian Air Force has named “Mr Nehemiah Adejoh” as the driver of the vehicle which killed late Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile.

The case has now been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force being a civil case.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Ibikunle Daramola, made this known on Sunday at a just-ended briefing in Abuja.

The NAF spokesperson, while giving the report of a preliminary investigation carried out, said the late Arotile met three of her former schoolmates at the Air Force Secondary School now Air Force Comprehensive School) Kaduna on the day of the unfortunate incident.

He said, “Mr Nehemiah Adejoh, Mr Igbekele Folorunsho and Mr Festus Gbayegun, drove past her in a Kia Sorento SUV, with Registration Number AZ 478 MKA. It is noteworthy that Messrs Adejoh, Folorunsho and Gbayegun are all civilians who live outside NAF Base Kaduna, but were on their way to visit one Mrs Chioma Ugwu, wife of Squadron Leader Chukwuemeka Ugwu, who lives at Ekagbo Quarters on the Base.

“Upon recognising their schoolmate, Arotile, after passing her, Mr Adejoh, who was driving, reversed the vehicle, ostensibly in an attempt to quickly meet up with the Deceased, who was walking in the opposite direction. In the process, the vehicle struck Flying Officer Arotile from the rear, knocking her down with significant force and causing her to hit her head on the pavement. The vehicle then ran over parts of her body as it veered off the road beyond the curb and onto the pavement, causing her further injuries.”

Daramola said Arotile was rushed to NAF hospital in the base but was confirmed dead at 04:45 pm.

He explained that the three ex-classmates were immediately detained and subjected to alcohol test but no such substance was found in their systems.

“It was however discovered that the driver of the vehicle, Mr. Nehemiah Adejo, did not have a valid driver’s license.

“Being a civil case, the matter will be handed over to the Nigeria Police with a view to further investigating and charging the suspects to court in accordance with extant laws,” he added.

The NAF spokesperson, however, confirmed that the details of the 24-year-old pilot have been communicated to her family who is still mourning.

Twitter removes Trump retweet video after Linkin Park complain

Twitter has taken down a campaign-style video retweeted by President Donald Trump after rock group Linkin Park issued a cease-and-desist order over the unauthorized use of their music, media reports said.

The video, which featured a cover of the band’s 2001 hit “In the End,” was posted by White House social media director Dan Scavino and retweeted on Saturday by Trump.

The tweet now says: “This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner.”

Linkin Park said they did not authorize the use of their music by Trump or his campaign.

“Linkin Park did not and does not endorse Trump, nor authorize his organization to use any of our music. A cease and desist has been issued,” the rock group said on Twitter.

The group’s late lead singer Chester Bennington was outspoken in his disapproval of the Republican president.

“Trump is a greater threat to the USA than terrorism!! We have to take back our voices and stand for what we believe in,” Bennington tweeted in 2017.

Linkin Park are not the first band to take issue with the president’s use of their music. The Rolling Stones last month threatened legal action against Trump if he does not stop using their songs at his campaign rallies.

Queen, Rihanna, Aerosmith, Adele, Neil Young, Dexys Midnight Runners, Panic! at the Disco and the family of the late Tom Petty have also complained about Trump’s use of their music.

Entertainment industry bible Variety said commentators had noted the pro-Trump video’s bizarre choice of “In the End,” whose lyrics include the chorus: “I tried so hard, And got so far, But in the end, It doesn’t even matter.”

Killer of Gokada CEO Fahim Saleh caught on video buying electric saw

There is overwhelming video evidence already gathered by detectives of the New York Police Department to prove that Fahim Saleh, the Gokada CEO was killed by African-American Tyrese Devon Haspil.

According to the New York Post, one of the video evidence was one that showed Haspil buying electric saw and cleaning supplies at a Home Depot.

The items were found at the scene of crime last Tuesday.

Manhattan assistant district attorney Linda Ford said at the arraignment of Haspil early Saturday morning, that there is enough evidence to prove that Haspil murdered and chopped up his boss.

At the arraignment held just after midnight, Haspil, 21, Saleh’s executive assistant, was ordered held without bail on charges of second-degree murder for the gruesome crime on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Haspil allegedly stabbed and dismembered his boss in Saleh’s $2.2 million Houston Street apartment after getting caught embezzling more than $90,000 from him — even though the kind-hearted Saleh had offered to not call the police if Haspil paid the money back in instalments.

Apart from being seen buying an electric saw, the clothing Haspil was seen wearing on surveillance footage at the Home Depot matched garments found in Haspil’s Brooklyn home.

Investigators have also been able to digitally track Haspil to and from the crime scene, Ford added.

“The evidence, in this case, is overwhelming,” Ford said during Haspil’s remote arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court.

“He is on video surveillance before and after the crime. He has been identified by at least two individuals from the videotape.”

A masked Haspil allegedly followed Saleh into his apartment elevator Monday around 1:45 p.m., Tasing him as soon as the elevator opened onto Saleh’s seventh-floor property.

Saleh then fell to the floor, and Haspil allegedly fatally stabbed him multiple times in the torso and neck, Ford said.

Haspil then left the apartment with Saleh’s body inside.

The next day, he allegedly visited Home Depot to buy the saw and other supplies he is believed to have used to cut off Saleh’s limbs.

Sources told The Post Haspil was allegedly in the process of chopping up Saleh’s body and stashing it in construction bags when Saleh’s cousin rang the apartment buzzer, prompting him to flee down the stairs.

Prosecutors at the arraignment did not elaborate on why they believe Haspil left the scene on Tuesday.

Ford confirmed Haspil had stolen more than $90,000 from Saleh, who in 2018 founded Gokada, a Nigerian motorcycle ride-sharing company, and an investment firm, Adventure Capital.

When the CEO discovered the embezzlement of his funds, instead of going to the police, he and Saleh agreed on a payment plan to repay the money, Ford said in court.

Judge Jonathan Svetkey ordered Haspil to be held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 17.
