Member of drug baron El Charo's cartel is murdered alongside his wife and two children

An internal conflict within Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán's old cartel left a family of four dead, including a member of the organization, when assassins opened fire in the northern Mexico state of Sonora.

The deadly incident took place Sunday morning in the city of Guaymas when Juan Francisco 'El Brujo' Herrera was intercepted aboard his SUV by a group of armed men in a taxi.

Herrera, a 34-year-old member of the Sinaloa Cartel, lost control of the vehicle when he was shot and crashed into a traffic light post.

His wife Nayeli, 30, and his two-year-old daughter were rushed to a local hospital, where they were declared dead. The couple's 12-year-old daughter died at the scene of the attack from a gunshot wound.

A 21-year-old woman identified as Joselyn Saraí, an adult male and three other children were taken to a medical facility and hospitalized for gun shot wounds.

The hit job was reportedly in response to the Saturday morning execution of Santiago Eduardo Payán in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

Homicide investigators recuperated at least 500 bullet casings.

The 26-year-old was the nephew of Rafael Caro Quintero, who has been embroiled in a power struggled with El Chapo's three sons, Ovidio Guzmán, Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, and Jesus Alfredo Guzman, who are also known as Los Chapitos, over the control of Caborca, a municipality in the state of Baja California.

His father, Genaro Payán, was an operative of the Sinaloa Cartel and was arrested by Mexican security forces in 2015. Authorities in the U.S. are seeking his extradition.

Quintero's network had 10 of its men executed June 19 as a result of a war-like assault launched by alleged members of the Los Salazar Cartel, which is linked to Los Chapitos.

He reportedly formed an alliance with El Chapo's sons to combat the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in November 2019

The 67-year-old, whose life is portrayed in Narcos: Mexico, co-founded the now defunct Guadalajara Cartel, for whom El Chapo once worked before splitting off.

Ballon d'Or 2020 cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic

France Football, which has been organising the annual Ballon d’Or awards since its inception in 1956 – with a five year tie-up with the FIFA World Player awards between 2010 and 2015 – has announced that due to the coronavirus pandemic there will be no winner of the 2020 Ballon d’Or.

That is particularly bad news for Robert Lewandowski but also rules out any continuance of the Leo Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo all-time duel for overall supremacy.

Lewandowski was a front-runner after bagging over 50 club goals for Bayern Munich and the Poland striker can still land a treble if Bayern win the Champions League.

Neymar and Kylian Mbappé could win a quadruple this season with success in both French cup competitions and Europe while Ronaldo could score a Serie A and Champions League double as well as the Serie A Capocannoniere award.

Lottery operators protest in front of Lagos court

Tens of lottery operators stormed the Federal High Court, Ikoyi on Monday to protest what they deem ”judicial bias” in the handling of a lawsuit filed by Western Lotto Limited, belonging to politician Buruji Kashamu.

The protest is in connection with a lottery operation case between Western Lotto Ltd and National Lottery Regulatory Commission, Registrar of Trademarks, Premier Lotto Ltd & 22 others.

In the case being handled by Justice C.J. Aneke, Western Lotto Limited sued 23 rival lottery firms over alleged infringement on its licence on “Ghana games”.

One of the defendants is Premier Lotto Limited, popularly known as Baba Ijebu Gaming Limited, belonging to Chief Keshington Adebutu.

Meanwhile, in December 2019, Justice Aneke had authorised Western Lotto to enter into the offices of other defendants and produce evidence to back the alleged infringement on its licence on “Ghana games”.

However, protesters besieged the court, carrying placards with various inscriptions accusing the judge of bias.

Some of the inscriptions were, ‘Aneke, do the right thing’; ‘Justice is not for sale’; ‘We say no to Kashamu’s judicial rascality’; ‘Equity & Fairness = Justice; Padi-Padi Judgment = Injustice’; among others.

Meanwhile, the hearing which was meant to hold today has been scheduled for Tuesday.

UK secures access to 90 million doses of 'promising' coronavirus vaccine

The UK Government has secured early access to 90 million vaccine doses to protect the UK from coronavirus.

In addition, treatments containing Covid-19-neutralising antibodies have been secured to protect those who cannot receive vaccines.

The vaccine doses are from the BioNTech/Pfizer alliance and Valneva while the antibodies have been secured from AstraZeneca.

The public are being urged to sign up to a new NHS website to make it quicker and easier for potential volunteers to join vital studies that could help save lives – the aim is to get 500,000 people signed up by October.

Announced by Business Secretary Alok Sharma today, the Government has agreed significant partnerships with leading pharmaceutical and vaccine companies BioNTech/Pfizer and Valneva that are developing innovative new vaccines to protect people against Covid-19.
The Government has also secured access to treatments containing Covid-19-neutralising antibodies from AstraZeneca to protect those who cannot receive vaccines such as cancer and immunocompromised patients.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland could have access to enough doses to vaccinate and protect priority groups such as frontline health and social care workers and those at increased health risk.

The Government has now secured access to three different types of Covid-19 vaccines that are being developed here and around the world.

This news gives the UK the most likely chance of getting access to a safe and effective vaccine at the quickest speed.

15 month-old toddler mauled to death by family pit bull

A 15-month-old toddler was mauled to death by a family dog in their garden.

The girl - named on a GoFundMe page as Scarlett- was sat in in her grandparents' back garden along with the pit bull, before the pet attacked her.

Two adult relatives were also injured in what was described as an "unprovoked attack" in East Providence, Rhode Island.

Local police officers were called to the home at around 2.45pm on Thursday and found the child had been bitten several times by the family dog.

Scarlett was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Upper South Providence less than three miles away where she later died, police confirmed.

East Providence Police Chief William Nebus told  WPRI  the dog "suddenly went after the child" when she was put on the ground.

"The family had sat down for lunch outside.

"The baby was on the ground roaming freely and the dog, in the fenced-in backyard, was also roaming freely. As far as we know, it was an unprovoked attack.

"It's hard because even a family dog, a family-friendly dog, can suddenly lash out for whatever reason," he said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Scarlett's parents, who have been named as Manny and Brianne Pereira.

The page reads: "With a heavy heart and tears in my eyes, I share with you the loss of this very beautiful and loved baby girl.

"Yesterday afternoon, my former brother in law and his wife had their baby girl TRAGICALLY taken from them.

"She was 15 months old and just starting to walk. She was brutally attacked by a family members dog and did not make it. This was my oldest sons only cousin on his fathers side.

"Manny and Brianne Pereira, the parents of this beloved, sweet girl have always been family. My heart aches so hard for them right now. I cannot imagine the burden of losing my baby so tragically and then bearing the unexpected expenses that come along with such a loss.

"I ask you to dig deep today and give anything you can possibly give. No amount is too little or too much. I appreciate all of your help and support during this difficult time. I will keep you updated when we find out when the services are."

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Police said there were no prior incidents with the pit bull.

Screams as woman tries to abduct boy, 2, in broad daylight as he plays in park

A woman tried to abduct a two-year-old boy as he played in a park in broad daylight this afternoon.

The child's mum was heard to scream as a woman tried to lead her son away.

Police have described the incident at Sefton Park, Merseyside as 'every parent's worst nightmare', reports the Liverpool Echo.

Officers are investigating after it was alleged a woman grabbed the wrist of the toddler and tried to pull him away.

Police said the attempted abduction took place at about 2.50pm near the bandstand, as many people will have flocked to the park to enjoy the good weather.

As the suspect allegedly attempted to lead the boy away, his mother intervened to stop.

Police said: "The child's mother screamed at the woman and she left on foot in the direction of the Palm House, away from the cafe."

The boy, fortunately, was uninjured but the mum was left "distressed".

Detective Inspector Simon Hurst said: "Thankfully the child’s mother was alert and screamed at the woman, who made off. This incident is every parent’s worst nightmare, and will have been absolutely frightening to experience.

"We know that many people were in the area and, even if they didn’t witness the incident itself, may recognise the woman described.

"If so, please let us know and pass any description to us, as well as any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage which may have inadvertently captured her image in photos or videos taken today in the area.

“I’d also like to assure people, who will be understandably worried, that we take any reports of this nature extremely seriously.

"We’ll act on all information provided and are absolutely determined to find this woman and ensure that no such incidents happen again.”

The suspect is described as a woman in her 50s, olive-skinned, 5ft tall, of medium build and with dark hair in a ponytail.

The incident was said to have happened in the 12/12 area of Ore in the Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

The police also arrested one Jeremiah Monday over the crime.

Parading the suspects at the police headquarters, Alagbaka Akure, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Bolaji Salami, said the deceased was Iyabo’s former boyfriend and she asked the new lover to kill him to make it easy for them to get married.

The police boss said, “One Suleiman Azeez, 25, a commercial motorcyclist, left home for his daily bread with his Bajaj motorcycle but did not return home. His body was later found in a pool of blood around the 12/12 area Odigbo via Ore.

Meghan and Harry's book price is slashed on Amazon before it even goes on sale

Meghan and Prince Harry have seen their 'tell-all' new book's price slashed by a third before it's even been released.

Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family is due out on August 11 but Amazon has already chopped its price tag down from £20 to £13.60.

The anticipated book is set to shed light on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's bombshell decision to quit as senior royals.

The 368-page account has been written by former showbiz journalist Omid Scobie and royal reporter Carolyn Durand.

It is said to be based on accounts from the royal couple's friends, while the authors are understood to have been given access to the Duke and Duchess themselves.

The publishers claim the work will "dispel the many rumours and misconceptions" which have surrounded the pair.

An insider previously told The Sun Harry, 35, "had been unhappy for a long, long time" and that the book will reveal he was the driving force behind the 'abdication' in March.

"He wanted to move in the direction that they did and had been considering it for more than a year," they continued.

The Sussexes are now living in a Los Angeles mansion with their baby son Archie, after initially leaving the UK for Vancouver Island in Canada.

Army silent over killing of 23 Nigerian soldiers in Katsina ambush

There is no official confirmation or reaction yet by Nigeria’s military authorities 48 hours after the massacre of some soldiers by bandits in an ambush in Katsina.

No fewer than 23 soldiers were killed Saturday when they were ambushed by a gang of “bandits” in a remote village in Katsina state.

According to security sources, the bandits opened fire on the soldiers who were on foot patrol in a forested part of the Jibia district in Katsina state.

“The bodies of 23 soldiers have been accounted for while some are still missing,” the sources said.

The massacre of Nigerian troops came same day that an improvised bomb exploded in a nearby village, killing at least seven persons and injuring another ten.

The AFP reported that the bandits could be working in concert with members of the Islamic State of West Africa, underscoring the worsening state of security in the country.

Sea turns red in Faroe Islands as 250 whales slaughtered in 'barbaric' hunt

Sickening pictures show the sea turning red with blood as dozens of whales are slaughtered in an annual ritual in the Faroe Islands.

Activists have voiced their horror as the killings - a tradition believed to date back 1,000 years - got underway in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the year's first hunt, more than 250 whales were killed, campaigners said.

Animals are surrounded as they migrate past the shores of the Danish territory and herded toward the beach, where they are hacked to death.

It has been described as an "insane blood sport" by charity ORCA, which is lobbying to end the slaughter, carried out with knives by licensed hunters.

Pictures shared by campaign group Sea Shepherd show hunters in the water butchering the whales. It has described the hunts as a "barbaric".

In a statement, Sea Shepherd said: "252 long finned pilot whales and 35 Atlantic white sided dolphins were killed in Hvalba last night after the huge pod was found off Sandvik.

"This is the first organised grindadrap hunt of 2020 with the meat from the hunt distributed first to the approximately 70 hunt participants from the boats and those killing on the beach - and then the remainder to villages on Suðuroy with all recipients then free to sell their share of the meat if they so wish."

Around 100,000 pilot whales swim close to the Faroe Islands, located in the North Atlantic between Norway and Iceland and comprising of 18 tiny islands, each year.

The Faroese hunt on average 800 whales annually. All hunters must have a hunting license.

The Blue Planet Society has condemned the tradition and said the animals had been "brutally and cruelly slaughtered".

In 2014 Sea Shepherd was able to disrupt the slaughter, but since then legislation has been passed banning its ships from the country's waters.

Charity ORCA posted on Twitter : "To the beautiful family of pilot whales that were brutally murdered in the Danish #FaroeIslands, we are so deeply sorry... We will keep fighting to end this insane blood sport. RIP beautiful family... Please Boycott the Faroe Islands!"

Magu May Be Demoted As Cabal Moves To Crush Tinubu

Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), risks demotion from his rank of Commissioner of Police to either Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) or Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) if found guilty of the allegations leveled against him.

Magu, who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 to lead his administration’s anti-corruption efforts, was promoted to the rank of a full commissioner from deputy commissioner in April 2018 by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Following a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari by Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Magu was arrested on July 6 by security operatives at the Abuja zonal office of the commission on his way to a meeting and taken before the Justice Ayo Salami-led presidential investigative panel.

The panel, sitting at the old Banquet Hall in Aso Villa, Abuja was set up by Buhari to investigate alleged mismanagement of recovered assets by the EFCC between May 2015 and May 2020 under Magu’s stewardship.

After 10 days in custody at Area 10, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Magu, who has since been replaced by Mohammed Umar, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), was released on bail last week.

Speaking with Daily Independent, a top security source, who has been following the development, said there is no way Magu can be exonerated from the allegations against him and the likelihood of his returning to his position as EFCC chairman is “very remote”.

According to him, Magu’s chances of being exonerated is very unlikely “since the allegations against him is coming from the supervising minister in charge of the agency he heads, that is the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami. It is a different thing if the petition came from the opposition parties or civil society organisations.

“No public official can escape a hostile investigation such as the one he is being subjected to. He may have committed some infractions no doubt. But those behind the probe are also not clean”, he said.

When asked if the trial has any political undertone, our source replied in the affirmative, saying some people in the establishment are unhappy over Magu’s refusal to investigate the petitions written against Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Our source also said beyond what was stated the trial also has to do with the battle for the 2023 presidential election.

“It has everything to do with 2023. They see him as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s man. Some persons within the system wants EFCC to go after him which Magu has failed to do”, he said.

Daily Independent in its July 10, 2020 edition titled ‘How Petitions On Tinubu’s Bullion Vans Landed Magu In Trouble’ had already reported that “beyond what was publicly stated in Malami’s memo to the president, one major issue against Magu is his perceived selective investigation and refusal to investigate the bullion vans allegations even though President Buhari, who has made the war against corruption one of the three cardinal agenda of his administration, had given him “unfettered access to go all out and probe anyone irrespective of his status in the society”.

When asked if Magu can return to his position, our source said with a tone of finality, “He can never return. He is gone for good, In fact he may be recommended for demotion to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police or Assistant Commissioner of Police”.

Our source also said aside the memo from Malami, Magu had been having issues with the Police Service Commission, the body saddled with the responsibility of dismissing and exercising disciplinary control over police officers in the country, except the IGP.

He said, “The DSS report of 2016 that allegedly indicted Magu said in December 2010, the Police Service Commission (PSC) found Magu guilty of action prejudicial to state security – withholding of EFCC files, sabotage, unauthorised removal of EFCC files and acts unbecoming of a police officer, and awarded him severe reprimand as punishment”.

Recall that Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, pioneer chairman of the EFCC was also demoted from the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in August 2008.
