Presidency Replies Senate: 'Only Buhari Can Sack Service Chiefs'

President Muhammadu Buhari is the only one with the power to sack Nigeria's Service Chiefs, the Presidency declared on Tuesday.

The seat of power was reacting to a resolution of the Senate earlier in the day, asking the Service Chiefs to resign or get sacked for rising insecurity in the nation, especially the recent killing of soldiers and mass resignation in the military.

The resolutions of the Senate followed consideration of a motion titled: “Rising casualties among Nigerian soldiers and other security agencies” by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South).

But the Presidency - in a statement titled “Service Chiefs: Position of Presidency on resolution by the Senate” - said Buhari reserves the right to appoint or sack Service Chiefs.

The statement, on the verified twitter handle of the Presidency @NGRPresident, reads: “The Senate on Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the Service Chiefs to resign or be sacked due to the multi-pronged security challenges in the country.

“The Presidency notes the resolution, and reiterates that appointment or sack of Service Chiefs is a Presidential prerogative, & President Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, will do what is in the best interest of the country at all times.”

Senate Says Enough, Service Chiefs Should Resign & Go

The senate has asked the service chiefs to step aside. The resolution of the upper legislative chamber followed a motion sponsored by Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno south and chairman of the committee on army.

Gabriel Olonisakin, chief of defence staff; Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff; Sadique Abubakar, chief of air staff; and Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, chief of naval staff; are all due for retirement.

Senator Ali Ndume cites order 42(1) and 52 to seek the leave of the Senate to Present a Motion on rising number of casualties among the Nigerian Army and other security agencies recently to ambushes.

Senate resolves to:
i. Observe a minute's silence in honour of the fallen heroes;

ii. Urge the Federal Government to urgently intensify the provision of modern equipment to enhance the operational capabilities of our armed forces;

iii. Mandate the Joint Committees on Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Defence, and Interior to receive briefings on the state of affairs of the services in this regard; and

iv. Mandate the Service Chiefs to step aside for new ones to come in.

"The spirit of this motion is that our armed forces are trying very heard. The good is still not enough. We need to continue to encourage and provide for them. They lay their lives on behalf of all of us and it is very sad that some of them have deserted the war front.

"...This our Joint Committees should get to the root of about 200 soldiers who have deserted. And my condolences to the families of the fallen heroes" - @DrAhmadLawan

Despite calls for their sack, President Muhammadu Buhari has kept them in office.

Buhari and Jonathan In Closed-Door Meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Goodluck Jonathan had a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday morning.

Jonathan arrived at Aso Rock about 11 am and proceeded straight to President Buhari’s office.

Recall that the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, had recently appointed Dr. Jonathan to head the political reconciliation in Mali where there is leadership tussle.

The Jonathan-led committee had recommended the government of national unity in the country but the opposition group had turned down the recommendation.

Though the agenda of the meeting was not made public, it was gathered that the former President was expected to brief Buhari on the efforts of his committee in the Mali crisis.

12 Senior EFCC Officials Suspended Indefinitely

12 senior officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been suspended indefinitely after being quizzed by the Presidential Investigation Committee, headed by Justice Isa Ayo Salami (red).

The new development comes days after 12 directors of the agency were suspended by the Presidency in relation to the ongoing probe of suspended Acting Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu.

According to reports, some of the directors affected by the suspension had been a part of the team investigating Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The agency’s Secretary, Olanipekun Olukoyede was suspended while others affected by the suspension include Kabir Latona, Muhammed Abba, Ibrahim Buhari, Rotimi Oyedepo.

Before their suspension, some of the officers were handling sensitive investigations before they received letters notifying them of their suspension from the anti-graft agency on Monday.

A source told The Nation that: “After being in limbo for one week, we got our suspension letters on Monday.

“We were informed that the suspension is indefinite. We have taken it in good faith. But most of us have not received queries in our career.

“We have not even appeared before any disciplinary committee. We appeal to President Mummadu Buhari to intervene by reversing the suspension.”

“It wasn’t a friendly session but we were able to make some clarifications on our performance in office.

“A Coordinator told the committee that service and loyalty to Nigeria guided their conduct in office rather than sentiments.”

"NDDC MD Slumped Under Heavyweight Of Corruption" – PDP

The acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Kemebradikumo Pondei, collapsed due to the heavyweight of corruption, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said.

Pondei had slumped on Monday while answering questions from members of the House Committee on NDDC investigating the alleged mismanagement of N40 billion by the interim management committee of NDDC.

But in a statement on Monday by Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesman, the party berated the All progressives Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari for the massive corruption going on the current administration.

The party said it was obvious that Pondei collapsed “under the weight and shame of overwhelming collective guilt brought on him by the exposure of massive corruption being perpetrated by NDDC officials and APC leaders”.

The statement read: “It is revealing that Pondei could go no further in the face of scathing revelations of direct pillaging of resources meant for the development and welfare of the Niger Delta people, in an unbridled corruption racket in which the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, also stands accused.

“It is rather curious that Prof. Pondei slumped after lawmakers demanded that he offers explanations on the contentious payment of billions of naira, alleged unbudgeted sums, to certain companies by the NDDC.

“This is particularly as Nigerians recall that the embattled NDDC boss had, last week, stalled proceedings by challenging the legislators and walking out on the House of Representatives investigative panel.

“The situation in the NDDC is just a tip of the iceberg on the humongous corruption, looting spree and concealment going on in ministries, department and agencies of government being perpetrated by APC leaders and their cronies.”

PDP urged the President to sack the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, and to also disband the NDDC interim management committee “if he indeed desires the coordinated probe he ordered to yield any credible results”.

The party urged Buhari to “note that the people of the Niger Delta region, who are being deprived of their welfare, are following the development with keen interest”.

“Moreover, the entire nation and indeed the global community are watching the handling of the NDDC as well as the EFCC fraud saga by the Muhammadu Buhari administration,” the party said.

“They are watching the unfolding drama, the rigmarole and veneers of concealment by corrupt officials and APC leaders.”

Lagos Monarch's Notorious Son Arrested During Operation (Photos)

Police operatives from Satellite Town in Lagos have arrested the notorious leader of a gang, who reportedly claimed he's the son of a Lagos monarch.

The man identified as Yusuf aka Prince, was arrested at Abule Oshun where he allegedly led his gang to a warehouse to rob and extort the owners.

Trouble was said to have started after members of the gang stormed a warehouse in Abule-Osun with the intention of extorting money from the owner but the attempt was resisted leading to a fierce crisis. The gang reportedly wounded scores of people and destroyed properties in the process.

Unconfirmed report claims that two persons were feared killed during the crisis that erupted Saturday morning, July 18, and their bodies were taken away to an unknown place.

Yusuf's arrest comes after several months manhunt. He had reportedly been on the police's wanted list for a series of crimes.

When he was arrested, he allegedly claimed to be the son of a man who claims to be the Oba of Oguntade village in Satellite Town.

Lagos State Police PRO, Bala Elkana said: "I know we have a particular Yusuf in our custody, which has been on our wanted list for series of crimes in the past, around that axis. I don't know whether he's a son to any Oba somewhere."

He added: "We have a Yusuf arrested who is involved in a series of crimes in the past that we're investigating."

Buhari Asked To Scrap NDDC

President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has been advised to scrap the Niger Delta Development Commission and the North East Development Commission for allegedly taking advantage of the masses.

Isah Abubakar, National President, Northern Youth Council of Nigeria and Chairman, Nigeria Citizen Action Group, in a statement issued on Monday in Kaduna, said, “We advise that Mr President to as a matter of urgency immediately scrap this two commission so as to stop few from taking advantage of the masses.”

He also advised the government to merge agencies, Ministries and commissions to cut costs and reduce corruption.

The statement suggested that the Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio should voluntarily resign his appointment to enable proper investigation of the entire ministry and Commission.

It noted that from available indications and reality on the ground, the two commissions are no longer serving the purposes of fast-tracking developments but rather served as avenues to loot the regional resources by a few.

“With the audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission one will not hesitate to say that if a similar committee is set to investigate the North East Development Commission, both will have little or no difference. The two commissions are never needed if all government agencies are very proactive, effective and transparent in their responsibility.

“It’s a fact that from 2000 till date, over 20 Trillion Naira have been looted in NDDC alone; this quantum amount of money can transform a Nation, not Region. Only 1.1% of the total population of that region benefit from this corrupt setting of government,” the statement explained.

NDDC Scholarship Beneficiaries In UK Protest Non-Payment Of Tuition

The 2018 and 2019 Scholarship beneficiaries of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, on Monday, 20/07/2020, assembled at the Nigerian High Commission, London, to cry out to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari over the non-payment of their tuition fee by the NDDC.

The scholars asked President Buhari to speedily effect the payment, because they stand the risk of eviction from their institutions and subsequent deportation, as their institutions had already threatened to stop their scholarship programmes.

A letter jointly sent by the scholars to President Buhari reads in part:

“Your Excellency, we have continually been harassed by series of letters from our institutions threatening to withdraw their service. Some students have not been very lucky as the responsibility for the payment of their tuition has been transferred to them with strict timelines and conditions.

“For over ten (10) months, scholars have been subjected to all kinds of dehumanising challenges now compounded by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Scholars now struggle to feed themselves, pay for accommodation and bills. Since the pandemic and subsequent global lockdown, the part-time jobs that many engaged in for survival have all been lost."

“We are now losing focus and depressed due to the fear of being evicted from our schools and subsequent deportation."

“Your Excellency, Mr President Sir, it is important to add that while the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) ensures that their scholars’ tuition and upkeep are paid as at when due, NDDC has abandoned its scholars bringing the name of our dear country to great disrepute and dishonour before our schools."

They asked President Buhari to order the management of NDDC to “respond to emails from our respective schools as they at the verge of terminating the admission of most students and are beginning to question the authenticity of our certificate of award."

“Effect the payment of our tuition and upkeep allowances as soon as possible and ensure that the Central Bank of Nigeria implement the same foreign exchange rate applicable to the recent 2019 awardees as there exist a discrepancy on our NDDC Scholarship Online Portal with no tangible reason given.

“Ensure that all 2018 and 2019 awardees are paid at the same time and not in Batches”.

Coronavirus: Two vaccines proven safe for human – Research

Two coronavirus vaccine candidates have proven safe for humans and produced strong immune reactions among patients involved in separate clinical trials, doctors said on Monday.

The first trial among more than 1,000 adults in Britain found that the vaccine-induced “strong antibody and T cell immune responses” against the novel coronavirus.

A separate trial in China involving more than 500 people showed most had developed widespread antibody immune response.

The studies, published in The Lancet medical journal, constitute a major step on the road towards a COVID-19 vaccine that is effective and safe for widespread use.

The authors of the studies said that they encountered a few adverse side effects from the vaccine candidates.

However, they cautioned that more research was needed, particularly among older adults, who are disproportionately at risk of dying of COVID-19.

Co-author Sarah Gilbert from the University of Oxford said the results “hold promise”.

“If our vaccine is effective, it is a promising option as these types of vaccine can be manufactured at a large scale.”

Nigerian entrepreneur commits suicide over r.a.p.e accusation in US

A creative designer and founder of Uhuru Designz, a United States of America-based clothing company, Izuchukwu Madubueze (simply known as Izu), has taken his own life over an allegation of s.e.xual assault.

Izu, who resided in Tampa, Florida, reportedly moved to the US some years ago.

While his Lagos-based friend, Nelson Greyhood, confirmed the suicide to Punch Metro, efforts to speak to his family members proved abortive.

The telephone line of his brother, Ekene, was not reachable.

Punch correspondent, however, read Ekene’s status update, indicating that his phone was ‘blowing up’ from multiple calls, as he asked his friends to send him text messages.

He had yet to respond to a text message from punch correspondent.

Izu reportedly graduated from King’s College, Lagos, in 2013, before getting a scholarship to study at the University of Florida.

The King’s College Old Boys’ Association confirmed his death on its Twitter page.

Punch Metro gathered that a Twitter influencer and female rights activist, Nanichi Anese, added Izu’s name to a list of s.e.xual offenders on the social media late June 2020.

She claimed to have received information from some anonymous ladies, who alleged that the victim s.e.xually assaulted them.

Izu, who was contacted by friends, who saw the post, reached out to Anese, demanding the identities of his accusers.

However, Anese allegedly declined the request, saying she had sworn to protect the ladies.

After failed efforts to clear his name, the victim was said to have taken his own life.

Izu announced his own death on Twitter using Crowdfire App, an application which allows users to schedule their posts.

“Oh and if you’re reading this, I’m dead lol,” he wrote on July 17, 2020.

As reactions trickled in, his accuser, Anese @nanichianese, claimed she had spoken to him and they had apologised to each other.

When the criticisms increased, she deactivated her Twitter account.

However, before deactivating the account, Anese said her intentions were noble.

“I’m aching right now and have so many thoughts, so much anger, pain, guilt, sadness. But this isn’t about me. It never has been. For those of you healing so many wounds right now, I’m sorry if any of your pain has come at my hands. This is the last of what I would ever wanted and I am really struggling because my friend is gone,” she wrote.

Findings from earlier tweets by @nanichianese showed that she had listed the names of some men, including Izu, accusing them of s.e.xual assault.

She urged them to have some “introspection” on their past dealings and seek the forgiveness of their former girlfriends.

“I have remained steadfast and will continue. No stories will be released, no names will be released. I stand by that and will not waiver. Deal with that as you see fit and do not attach me to anything. But this thread will live on,” she wrote on her timeline.

Izu, in a private message to Anese, whom he said was a friend, demanded details of the allegations against him.

He lamented that a lot of people had been calling him after seeing his name on the list.

Anese said she was told “the harassment was not physical.”

“Again, thanks for your response; I thought we had a better relationship than this Nani, but it’s cool, I can’t shoot the messenger. No one comes to mind still. My phone is blowing up, and I myself, I’m still shocked. If you could let the person know I sincerely apologized for any way I harassed them that’d be greatly appreciated. If they need to talk, they can reach me on (phone number). Feel free to post this too,” he wrote.

However, Anese said the victim declined to speak with him.

Izu expressed frustration at the accusation and released private messages of a lady, who asked to date him in 2017.

He said while he did not wish to discredit any supposed victim’s story, his efforts at knowing his offence had been futile.

“I am still pretty clueless as to who this is, so if you feel comfortable enough, please feel free to reach out to me so I can understand wherever I went wrong and make amends and do better overall,” he wrote.

His friend, Greyhood, told punch correspondent that Izu later killed himself.

He said, “He schooled in the University of Florida, where he studied something like Criminology or so. He was staying in a small apartment before he moved to a big warehouse as his company was doing fine. He was a great guy with strong will. He moved to the US more than four years now on scholarship.

“It was actually over there that the rape allegation trended. The woman compiling the list of the supposed sexual offender is also in the United States.

“I went on Twitter and saw the whole story and how he pleaded to know the accusers and even brought out his past relationships, saying he had never abused anyone in his life.

“His friends close to him in Florida confirmed that he’s dead. The Crowdfire app he used to post his death allows people to schedule their posts. So, it dropped online after he took his own life.”

Punch Metro observed that a petition on change.org calling for the prosecution of Anese had been signed by over 5,000 people.

Thousands of Nigerians on Twitter also called for justice for the victim, with the hashtag #JusticeforIZU, trending for hours.

60 convicted over face mask violation in Ekiti

COVID-19 Task Force in Ekiti, on Monday, arrested not less than 60 people who violated regulation on the compulsory use of face mask.

The offenders were taken to a Special Court, where they were convicted for contravening Coronavirus Disease Regulations 2020.

Prof. Bolaji Aluko, Chairman of the COVID-19 Task Force, who spoke on the development, said the enforcement would henceforth be a regular exercise.

Aluko said that the offenders were arrested in various parts of Ado Ekiti including Ajilosun, Ijigbo, Old Garage, Okesa, Fajuyi, Adebayo and Basiri.

”A fine of N5,000 is imposed on the convicts for refusal to wear face masks in public, in line with the new law to contain the disease,” the task force chairman said.

He expressed concern over the refusal of some citizens to wear a face masks which cost as low as N100.

”We are not interested in charging people on anything. We want them to understand that the face mask must be worn.

“It happens that sometimes there are people who will not obey the rules unless they are fined. It costs only N100 or N200 to buy a face mask and a little inconvenience to wear it.

“Now you have to be caught and charge N5,000,’’ Aluko said.

He urged residents to comply to contain the spread of the virus.

Also speaking, Retired Brig.-Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, said that the security personnel had been briefed to enforce the law.

Ogundana advised car owners to always be with face masks as stop-and-search might be conducted to enforce compliance.

He said: “If you are in your car alone and you are not wearing a face mask, you may not be arrested but we can ask you because you have to come down from your car and go somewhere.

“If you don’t have it, it constitutes an offense. You must have the face mask with you in your car or in your pocket because security personnel will ask of it.”

Ekiti State Traffic Management Agency (EKSTMA) led by the General Manager, Chief Femi Olanrewaju, also stationed officers of the agency in strategic locations to enforce the use of face masks.

Olanrewaju said the use of face masks in the public is now compulsory, noting that the personnel had been positioned at junctions, traffic light areas, markets, and bus stops to arrest offenders.

Pirates kidnap 7 Russian sailors in Gulf of Guinea

The seven Russians were among 13 crew members pirates abducted from the Curacao Trader 210 miles off the coast of Benin last Friday.

Air Force veteran paints his entire yard with huge Trump 2020 banner

An Ohio Air Force veteran has used biodegradable paint to transform his entire yard into a Trump 2020 banner ahead of the November election - earning praise from the President himself.

J.R. Majewski, of Port Clinton, used around 120 gallons of paint to create a 19,000-square-foot banner to cover his long, triangular front yard of of his Bay Township home.

This isn't the first time the yard was restyled by Majewski - last July he painted a massive American flag in his yard to honor patriotism and fellow military veterans.

But this year he wanted to focus on President Donald Trump.

Photos of Majewski's lawn show the near entirety of his lawn has been painted dark blue with the phrase 'Trump 2020 Keep America ... Great!'

An aerial view shows the blue banner as a splash of color compared to his neighbor's green plots.

He used biodegradable, chalk-based paint to avoid harming his yard and then environment.

Initially, Majewski told Port Clinton News Herald that he planned to paint the National League of Families POW/MIA flag, but discovered there could be problems with the amount of black paint needed.

The inspiration to create a campaign-like Trump banner sparked after speaking with other members of a local veterans group, many of which are Trump supporters.

'You see and hear a lot from the president on his support of the military. New weapons, new equipment, new technology — all of those things matter,' said Majewski.

'I think as a veteran, it’s highly appreciated.'

Majewski, who served in Afghanistan, said he remembers going more than 40 days without a shower because they had no access to running water.

Since the banner was completed, Majewski said he's received overwhelmingly positive and even got a shout out from Trump.

'Thank you to J.R. Majewski, a great Air Force Veteran and Trump Supporter who did a beautiful job of turning his lawn into a giant Trump Sign,' Trump wrote on Sunday morning,

'Thanks also to your fantastic Ohio neighbors. We are making record progress on JOBS, etc. Big Silent Majority!!!'

He's also heard support from the Ottawa County Republican Party and Rep. Douglas Swearingen of District 89, who visited the mural.

Majewski was also featured on Fox & Friends 'Shot of the Morning' segment where he showed off the banner.

'I think he's going through a lot right now, trouble s and turmoils right now, and a lot of people like myself out here supporting him,' he told the station.

'And we've been silent, but it's about time we voice our support.

Majewski said that several of his neighbors have stopped by and he's received 'a lot of positive feedback.'

He also placed a few signs around the banner saying that he can still be friends with people on the other end of the political spectrum.

'YES I support TRUMP and YES we can still be friends even if you don't,' one sign read.

'We do not have to be vicious to one another, that’s what’s dividing us right now,' siad Majewski.

'Not that I wanted it, but I did anticipate a little bit more friction, but there has been absolutely none.'

Majewski created a GoFundMe on Saturday to keep the Trump banner on his lawn through the November election.

'I would like to maintain the TRUMP Flag through November but the costs are be too substantial for me as an individual,' he wrote.

'Donated funding would be used to purchase of environmentally friendly, non-VOC, organic field paint, application of the paint, and lawn maintenance of the flag.'

NDDC MD, Pondei, Leaves Hospital

Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei has left the hospital.

Prof Pondei who earlier today slumped as the House of Representatives committee on NDDC grilled him is said to have left the hospital where he was taken, about an hour ago.

Pondei was being grilled for over an hour when he slowly slumped over his desk, appearing to have fainted.

Several people present at the hearing rushed to his aid, propping him up and attempting to stabilize him, while the proceeding was halted.

Soon after, Pondei appeared to be in a seizure with a man holding open his mouth as others held him upright.

Afterward, he appeared to regain and lose composure intermittently and had to be moved out of the session.
