Female UNIBEN Lecturer Killed As Police Chase Driver Over N100 Bribe (Photos)

Dr. Stella Okotie, a staff of the University of Benin, was on Tuesday sent to early grave when a commercial bus driver running from police extortion rammed into her.

The terrible incident happened in Benin City at about 6:30pm along the ever-busy Benin-Lagos expressway, close to the UNIBEN main gate.

The deceased was until her demise, a lecturer at the UNIBEN faculty of Education. Aside Okotie, one person was said to have also been killed with another sustaining some injuries, according to Campus Gist.

The victims were killed while a commercial bus driver was running away from the police officers who had earlier flagged his vehicle down, demanding N100 bribe.

One of the officers was said to have jumped into the moving bus and engaged in a physical struggle with the bus driver, dragging the steering wheel in the process.

According to an eyewitness, the late UNIBEN staff was standing at the walkway alongside her husband, Dr. Williams Okotie, also a staff of UNIBEN and her son when the bus hit her and their stationery UNIBEN water supply van.

“The police officers were pursuing a commercial bus in quest for money leading to a physical struggle between one of the officers and driver of the vehicle,” he told Campus Gist.

“While the police was struggling the steering wheel with the driver, the bus ram into Dr. Okotie who was standing on the walk way just by the side of her vehicle, killing her on the spot.”

Following the incident, the police officers fled the scene leaving behind one of their colleague who was beaten to pulp and almost left for dead by angry mob but for the quick intervention of a woman believed to be his wife.

Consequently, residents and passersby barricaded the ever-busy new Lagos road right in front of the UNIBEN Ugbowo main gate, causing heavy traffic gridlock for hours.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor could not be reached for comments. The university management is yet to issue a statement as at the time of filing this report.

Magu Opens Up: "Recovered Vehicles Auctioned To Presidential Villa, Others"

The suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, says some of the vehicles recovered by the EFCC were auctioned to the Presidential Villa, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development as well as the Federal Inland Revenue Services and other agencies.

He further stated that some of these agencies had not paid for the vehicles but there was an arrangement that the money would be deducted from their financial allocation.

Magu, in a letter addressed to the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel titled, ‘Re: Alleged Case of Conspiracy, Enrichment, Abuse of Public Office and Other Infractions,’ explained how some of the recovered vehicles were auctioned.

The letter was in response to an earlier report by the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets in which Magu was accused of being unable to account for the interest accrued to N550bn recovered funds as well as recovered vehicles and houses.

In his response to the allegations of being unable to account for recovered vehicles, Magu stated, “On allocation of vehicles to some government agencies through special auction with presidential approval. The beneficiary agencies are: the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of which the valued price is to be debited from their allocation; State House, National Commission for Refugees and Displaced Persons; Federal Inland Revenue Service and National Directorate of Employment.”

The suspended EFCC boss said about 450 other vehicles, which had been recovered, had yet to be sold despite receiving presidential approval to do so.

“The commission presently has presidential approval to dispose over 450 forfeited vehicles located in Lagos and Abuja. The vehicles have been valued by the National Automotive Council Valuers and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. But no sale/disposal has been conducted yet,” Magu stated.

He said some of the houses permanently forfeited to the Federal Government by looters had also been handed over to some government agencies like the Voice of Nigeria, North -East Development Commission and the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate.

The suspended EFCC boss explained that some other properties, which had been forfeited pending the outcome of court cases, were being rented by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Nigerian Army and other agencies of government.

The letter further read, “Real properties finally forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria and allocated to some agencies for official use in line with the Presidential approval are: Voice of Nigeria, National Directorate of Employment, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, North East Development Commission and Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate.

“Properties under interim forfeiture order are rented by the following government agencies: Nigerian Army, Federal Ministry of Finance, Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

“Other agencies of government that have approached the commission to rent properties under interim forfeiture order include: National Human Rights Commission and National Council for Arts and culture.”

Magu said the commission also temporarily handed over property in Lagos to the Lagos State Government for use as isolation centres for COVID-19 patients.

The suspended EFCC boss attached photographs of some of the recovered assets to the letter he addressed to the panel.

However, it was learnt that an attempt by Magu’s lawyer, Wahab Shittu, to submit the letter to the panel on Monday was rebuffed.

The panel was said to have insisted that there was no basis for the letter and informed Shittu that Magu would be summoned if there was a need for clarification.

“An attempt to submit the letter to the secretary of the panel on Monday failed. Magu’s team was informed that the panel does not entertain letters but it is purely an investigative one. If there is a need for clarification, Magu would be invited,” a source said.

Governor Umahi Sacks 1,800 Appointees, Gives Reasons

Governor David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State has sacked over 1,800 of his aides over what he described as "nonchalant attitudes of his appointees in Executive Assistants, Senior Technical Assistant and Technical Assistants".

Umahi made this known when he signed into law, the Ebonyi State 2020 Revised Budget of 132billion in a virtual ceremony with stakeholders physically present at the Ecumenical Centre Abakaliki.

Governor Umahi who approved the dissolution of the 3 categories of appointees said the sack is effective from 1st August, 2020.

He, however, urged those interested in rendering services to the state government in their capabilities to reapply after their dissolutions which will be subject to approval by the Ministries, Departments and Agencies where they wish to serve.

The governor further said that if you are reapplying and you have no agricultural farm, then, you need not apply as applicants must show where they are farming because the state government is doing everything possible to turn the minds of Ebonyians from appointment position to business minds.

"If you are reapplying, you must explain what you did before, show where your farm is and be sponsored by either Commissioners, SAs, SSAs, Boards and Commissions.", he added.

During the event, the Governor also noted that the budget had passed through various processes, starting with the citizens' budgets for the inclusion of omitted areas and necessary inputs.

Presidency Panel Rejects Magu's Defence

The presidential panel probing Ibrahim Magu, suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has rejected his defence.

The panel headed by Ayo Salami, former president of the court of panel, has not formally served Magu with the allegations levelled against him.

Recall that Magu, who was arrested on July 6 and whisked before the panel sitting at the presidential villa in Abuja, was detained for 10 days.

A source told TheCable that Wahab Shittu, Magu’s lawyer, had filed a defence based on the allegations in circulation.

“Magu’s counsel sent in a defence to the presidential panel but it was rejected,” the source said.

“The panel wondered why the lawyer came up with the defence when Magu had not even been presented with the allegations. Panel members were taken aback on the reaction of the lawyer.”

Shittu neither answered calls nor responded to a text message seeking his comment on the development.

While in detention, Magu had requested to see a copy of the allegations to enable him prepare for defence.

Magu’s lawyer had also asked that a copy of the report of the presidential audit committee which probed the EFCC between May 2015 and May 2020; a copy of the memo of Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), individual petitions submitted to the panel be made available to his client.

After regaining freedom, the former acting chairman of the EFCC had described the allegations against him as “nonsense”, saying he was shocked when he read them in newspapers.

“They are nonsense. They are mere trump up allegations to tarnish my image and that of the EFCC. I did not steal or divert or convert funds to private use. I read the allegations and I was shocked,” he had said.

He, however, promised to cooperate with the panel.

Magu’s travails followed a memo by Malami who accused him of grave malfeasance.

He was alleged to have mishandled the recovered loot and sold seized assets to associates.

He was also alleged to have refused to subject himself to the supervision of the office of the attorney-general.

Third mainland bridge will be closed on Friday — FG

The Federal Government says the Third Mainland Bridge will be closed on Friday at midnight and will not be reopened until January 2021.

Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, who confirmed this at a briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, called on motorists in Lagos to be patient with the repairs.

Mr Fashola explained that the maintenance of the busiest bridge in the country was aimed at replacing damaged components for a better motoring experience.

The maintenance is to be carried out on a length of 3.5 kilometres out of the 11.8 kilometres of the bridge.

The planned duration of the closure and the importance of the bridge to activities in Lagos which has battled traffic for years has led to concerns.

Mr Fashola acknowledged that the closure will lead to hardship in the short term but explained that there was no other way to carry out the maintenance work without closing the bridge.

He added that it was better to bear six months of work and closure than to allow the bridge to collapse, a development that would take years to fix.

Goalkeeper back on pitch weeks after being struck by lightning

A goalkeeper is ready to play again just two-and-a-half weeks after he was struck by lightning on a pitch.

Russian Ivan Zaborovsky was shown in a dramatic video hit in the chest by a thunderbolt as he kicked the ball while training alone.

There was a fireball and black smoke was seen burning the pitch.

The strike floored him face down and players and coaching staff rushed to his side fearing he was dead.

Today it was revealed he did not breathe for two minutes.

But he was given heart massage and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation by his coaches and miraculously survived.

The player was in a coma for three days but is now back with his teammates and showed off the scar on his chest from the lightning strike as he signed his first professional contract with local club FC Znamya Truda, in Russia’s third tier.

Ivan also told how his hero and role model is Man Utd’s keeper David De Gea, who he dreams of meeting.

‘I’m feeling perfectly well now. Nothing is hurting,’ he said.

He even repeated the kick which he made as the lightning struck him.

‘I don’t remember anything starting from the moment I left home to go training,’ he said.

‘I came to my senses in hospital.’

Coach Anton Basov said: ‘I immediately thought it was lightning.

‘When I ran up to him, I turned him over and his entire shirt on his chest had burned out.’
The player was not breathing for almost two minutes.

‘After we provided therapy, he began to breathe, and I felt his heart beating, his pulse reappeared.’

A day later his worried girlfriend Yelena said: ‘He is in a stable condition.

‘He regained consciousness but due to a strong painful shock he had to be put back into a coma.’

Previously it was thought he had kicked the ball in the goal as he was struck by lightning.

But a new version of the moment shows the ball went wide of the net.

11 missing, Six injured in Colombian military helicopter crash

Eleven Colombian military personnel were missing and six injured after a helicopter crashed in the southeast of the country during an operation against guerrillas, the army said on Tuesday.

The Blackhawk helicopter was carrying 17 military personnel when it went down. The armed forces’ high command did not reveal whether it was shot down or an accident.

Authorities found the helicopter in a stretch of the river Inirida in Guaviare state, an area where dissident former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas are active.

FARC rebels laid down their arms in a historic 2016 peace deal that ended a half-century conflict and turned the guerrillas into a communist political party.

But more than 2,000 dissidents, according to authorities, refused to join the 13,000 rebels that signed the peace deal and continue to resist the government, financing themselves through drug-trafficking and illegal mining.

The army said the helicopter was taking part in an operation against dissidents in an area where there are drug plantations.

The army’s air assault division said in a statement it was “on site beginning the corresponding investigations to determine the circumstances regarding the time, manner and place that the events occurred.”

The armed forces’ top commander, General Luis Fernando Navarro, travelled to a military base nearby to direct the “manoeuvres aimed at recovering the missing.”

Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo referred to the incident as a “plane crash” but that version has not been corroborated by the military high command.

Trujillo said on Twitter that the six injured service personnel “have already been rescued and will be transferred to Bogota for their medical attention.”

The banks of the Inirida river are in a strategic zone for the drug-trafficking trade where one of the most powerful criminal groups to emerge from FARC dissidents, led by Gentil Duarte, operates.

Duarte originally took part in peace talks but finally opted to continue the guerrilla struggle and is trying to unite other groups that broke away from the FARC peace movement.

Peace has not been easy with the former rebels complaining that 219 ex-fighters have been murdered since the peace deal was signed.

Despite FARC laying down its arms, a multi-faceted conflict continues to rage.

Alongside FARC dissidents, another left-wing guerrilla group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), right-wing paramilitaries, and drug-traffickers continue to battle each other and the Colombian army.

The more than half-century conflict left nine million people dead, missing or displaced.

Court grants bail to ‘Church of Satan’ Founder, others

The Federal High Court, sitting at Umuahia, Abia State, has granted bail to the ‘Church of Satan’ founder, Ifekwe Udo and 17 others, who were arrested by the Police over the riot at Ebem Ohafia where government buildings were razed by irate mob.

Some youths of Ebem community in Ohafia council area had gone on rampage following the killing of a young trader, identified as Ifeanyi Arunsi, by the Police.

When the case came for mention yesterday, Justice E Asiago, in his ruling, said the defendants’ application for bail followed the motion for their release by their counsel. The judge held that since the prosecution team led by S.A Ofoegbu did not oppose the application for bail, the defendants are deemed innocent until proven guilty.

The Judge also held that the offence which the defendants were alleged to have committed are bail-able offences and granted them bail in the sum of N1,000,000 with two sureties each; one of which must be a traditional ruler or recognized chief and a senior civil servant.

The court also held that the sureties must have verifiable address.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, S.A Ofoegbu, explained that the interest is not to punish the defendants, but to ensure they appear for trial.

In his argument, Counsel to the church of Satan founder, Ibeka Esq, pleaded on the stringent conditions to be applied in granting the 3rd accused bail, stressing that there is lingering acrimony in Ebem Ohafia where the church is located.

He explained that as a result of sentiments over the incident, no traditional ruler or chief would like to stand surety for the Church of Satan Founder, Ifekwe.

However, the Judge ruled that he would not lower the standard because of the defendant and adjourned the matter to October 13, 2020, for trial.

Reps give Akpabio 48-hours to name lawmakers that got NDDC contracts

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has given the minister of Niger Delta Affairs Godswill Akpabio 48-hours to name the National Assembly members involved in the contracts awarded by Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The House of Reps committee probing the financial dealings and contracts in the NDDC also asked Akpabio to publish names, contracts, dates and amount of contracts awarded to members of the 9th National Assembly.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila noted that Akpabio must reveal the names of the lawmaker within 48-hours or risk the wrath of the House.

“I am giving the minister 24 to 48 hours to publish the names, the contracts, the companies, date, amount and the projects,” Gbajabiamila said.

“Failing which, this house will bring the full wrath of the house on him. It is important that we set this record straight.

“The minister owes it to himself, to the committee, to people of Niger Delta, and the country to publish it. I will reserve my judgment. The minister came there to play games, but we do not play games here.”

Akpabio on Monday denied awarding a single contract since he assumed office and indicted members of the National Assembly in the ongoing probe of the NDDC.
