Drug-smuggling cat escapes high-security prison

A cat that was detained at Sri Lanka’s main prison while allegedly trying to smuggle drugs and cell phone SIM cards has escaped
A cat that was detained at Sri Lanka’s main prison while allegedly trying to smuggle drugs and cell phone SIM cards has escaped, according to media reports on Monday.

The feline was detected by jail intelligence officials on Saturday at the high-security Welikada Prison, a police official said.

The official said nearly two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip were found in a small plastic bag tied around the cat’s neck.

While there is no stipulation for animal arrest under Sri Lankan law, police were hoping the cat could lead them to the smugglers’ den, the media reports suggest. But it escaped on Sunday from a prison room where it was kept. The cat reportedly scampered out of its holding room and escaped through a fence when prison guards came in to feed it.

There was no immediate comment from prison authorities.

The prison had reported an increase in incidents of people throwing small packets of drugs, cell phones and phone chargers over the walls in recent weeks.

Sri Lanka is battling a major drug problem with some anti-narcotics detectives also implicated in selling confiscated drugs.

Police last week seized an eagle allegedly used by drug traffickers to distribute narcotics in a suburb of Colombo.

Anthony Joshua to fight Kubrat Pulev in December 2020

Anthony Joshua will fight Kubrat Pulev in December, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

The WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight king had been due to fight Pulev in June with Hearn now keen to delay the fight for a sufficient amount of time to hopefully allow fans to attend.

"We know AJ's only going to fight once this year, so we want to give ourselves the best opportunity to bring in a crowd, and that would obviously be the later the better," Hearn told ESPN.

"But it's still not a gimme at all. There's still a very strong chance that AJ will have to fight behind closed doors."

"Bearing in mind he's only going to fight once this year, I just feel as we might as well give ourselves every chance to have a crowd and that will be the first weekend of December."

Hearn also confirmed The O2 Arena in London is now the preferred venue for the fight, rather than the
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which was originally scheduled to host the bout.

"Their regulations comply with the government, so at the moment they're closed," Hearn added. "So they would need to open up. We'd need to get an understanding from the government what is allowed in arenas.

"Are you going to open at 50 percent [capacity]? Are you going to open up 100 percent? There's a lot of work that has to go into that with the government and the O2."

Joshua's rival Tyson Fury, who holds the WBC heavyweight belt, faces a rematch with Deontay Wilder also in December, with the plan for the British duo to then have a superfight for all the titles.

Kanye West officially names Michelle Tidball as vice president on presidential ballot

Kanye West has officially filed Michelle Tidball, a life coach based in Wyoming, as his vice president on Arkansas’ presidential ballot.
Kanye West has officially filed Michelle Tidball, a life coach based in Wyoming, as his vice president on Arkansas’ presidential ballot.

A spokesperson for the Arkansas Secretary of State told TMZ that Kanye’s campaign turned in the needed 1,000 signatures to qualify for the November election ballot.

The forms were reportedly turned in just 15 minutes before the Arkansas’ noon deadline.

It comes after canvassers and volunteers tried to rack up petition signatures for the presidential ballot in Ohio – a key swing state that could decide who sits in the Oval Office after November.

It also follows a tumultuous month that included a bizarre first campaign rally in South Carolina, a series of tweets that touched on everything from abortion to cheating allegations lodged at his wife Kim Kardashian and concerns over the rapper’s mental health.

Tidball, 57, described herself as a ‘biblical life coach’ and has previously mentioned on one of her teleconferences that she does not ‘watch news.’

She hails from Cody, Wyoming – the same town where Kanye owns a $14 million ranch.

Tanzanian singer, Diamond Platnumz set to wed again

Lately, on his social media, Tanzanian heartthrob Diamond Platnumz has been dropping hints of his intentions to walk down the aisle and if all goes as planned, the father of five, will be a married man by end of this year.

Last month during a show in Dodoma, Diamond told the crowd that he is seeing someone whom he intends to marry by the time he is celebrating his 31st birthday. This was just five months after he split with his Kenyan bea Tanasha Donna.

Nairobi News has now exclusively learnt that plans for dowry payment and wedding arrangements have been finalised with everything being done in uttermost secrecy.

Former Dar es Salaam regional commander Paul Makonda, who is close to Diamond’s family, has been tasked to lead the dowry negotiations while Wasafi Events and Diamond Lifestyle Manager, Hellen Kazimoto is in charge of the wedding plans.

On this one, Diamond plans to pull a huge surprise to his fans.

But who is he set to marry?

“She comes from a filthy rich family with investments in Rwanda and overseas. The two have been seeing each other for about six months now,” a highly placed source privy to the developments told Nairobinews.

Music critic who gave Taylor Swift's album a rating of 8/10 is threatened by her fans who says her life is on the line

Taylor Swift fans have harassed Pitchfork’s editor following her review of the star’s new album, which, though positive, wasn't sparkling enough.

On Monday Pitchfork’s senior editor Jillian Mapes published a review of the singer’s eighth album Folklore, and hours later was bombarded with angry messages on social media where crazed fans tweeted out her address, phone number and photos of her home and herself.

However, Mapes's review gave Swift’s album an eight out of 10 rating and praised it as 'a sweater-weather record filled with cinematic love songs and rich fictional details.'

The review wasn’t positive enough for fans who harassed the writer even though the score wasn't her own, it was determined by the ratings of multiple staffers.

Die-hard fans proceeded to dox the editor, threaten to burn her home, and send her 'hexing' tweets paired with satanic images of Swift.

One tweet paired with a demonic image of Swift was written in the Ethiopian language Amharic saying: 'Anyone who comes after the Dark Queen, Taylor Swift, dies alone and will be burned forever.
You will be filled with your dark fears and demons. You will never be happy and sleep well again.'

Mapes has even been targeted with death threats on and off the internet, including late-night threatening phone calls to her cell phone.

Some of those calls came in around two in the morning, just an hour after her review was published online.

Mapes tweeted Tuesday she’s received 'more Twitter threats to roll up and harm me than I could stomach to go through.'

'I’ve gotten too many emails saying some version of, "you are an ugly fat bitch who is clearly jealous of Taylor, plz die," which is not the first time I’ve heard that from pop stans...' she said.

'It sucks to be scared of every person milling about outside or feel like you can’t answer the phone. That said, I am safe and doing fine,' she added.

She’s now made her Twitter account private.

Khloe Kardashian's two words that ends ex Tristan Thompson hopes of romance

Khloe Kardashian has issued a short, terse response to reports that she had forgiven ex-boyfriend Tristan Thompson and rekindled their romance.

It had been reported that Khloe was hoping the NBA star had "changed" his ways and they were "beyond happy" together after ending their time apart.

Sources had told PEOPLE on Monday: "She loves having him around. He has the best relationship with True,

"And he has been amazing to Khloe too. They are very much together and Khloe is beyond happy."

The source added: "They have been living in kind of a bubble and Khloe enjoys it."

It would seem that this is wide of the mark as representatives reached out to Daily Mail to say simply in two words that thoughts of them getting back together are "not true."

The 36-year-old Keeping Up With The Kardashians star is reportedly enjoying having the 29-year-old Cleveland Cavaliers basketball player in her life as a co-parent for their two-year-old daughter True.

Any idea that this relationship will be going any further than platonic seems to have been put to bed, once and for all.

Rumours of the pair getting back together have been circulating since June as Tristan noticeably became more involved with Khloe and True.

On Sunday, he was seen picking up pizzas in Calabasas for the three of them and sources have said that he has been living with Khloe at her mansion since the coronavirus lockdown was put in place.

The source had said that the pair were heading for another test of their relationship when the NBA season starts again and Tristan will be committed to travelling around the country.

They said: "Tristan's travelling was always a concern. This is when he would mess up their relationship.

"She hopes that Tristan has changed though so they can continue to be together as a family."

Khloe and Tristan had split in the beginning of 2019 after reports that he had kissed Kylie Jenner's BFF at the time, Jordyn Woods.

This came almost a year after Tristan had reportedly cheated on her numerous times, including while she was pregnant with True.

Don’t drag me into NDDC contract scam, Ibori warns Akpabio

Former Delta State Governor, James Ibori has told Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio not to drag him into contract scam at the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

Ibori said he was never a part of any contract from the NDDC and that he had never been a government contractor.

Ibori, in a statement issued by his Media Assistant, Tony Eluemunor, said he had to make the clarification for the records because friends and associates had inundated him with phone calls since Monday morning.

According to him, he is stating categorically that he never solicited for, or was awarded, or indeed executed, any contract with NDDC or any government agency, at any time, for that matter.

The statement further said; “And in all he has been through in and out of public office, he has never been accused of being a government contractor, let alone a failed one hence he did not want to dignify the allegation with a response because it is ridiculous.

“So, Ibori is advising Akpabio, his brother, friend and member of the former Governors Forum, to please calm down and focus on the task at hand.”

The statement quoted Ibori as saying that “the NDDC we have today is a product of his personal sacrifice as well as those of his Niger Delta colleagues (1999 -2007) who rose to the occasion to override the veto of President Olusegun Obasanjo who refused to assent to the NDDC Bill at the time.

“If not for the exemplary courage some of us exhibited, there would have not been an NDDC to bicker about today.”

The former governor said watching the level the NDDC had degenerated to is a tragedy.

“We owe it a duty to the people of the Niger Delta to make NDDC work to ameliorate the sufferings of the people of the region and to realise the dream for which we fought for it to be set up. So, let everybody involved in the NDDC do their duties to the good people of the region.”

Other beneficiaries are judges of Rivers State origin serving the nation in the Federal Judicial Service.

Man dies after Benin herbalist defrauds family of N5m

The  Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old Beninoise, Gbese Peter, for allegedly defrauding a Nigerian couple, identified as Mr and Mrs Bamigboye of N5m.

Peter allegedly swindled the couple on the pretext of helping them to overcome their spiritual problem and shielding their children from untimely death.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.

Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested after Mrs Bamigboye lodged a complaint at the Sabo Police Station, Abeokuta North LGA.

He said the complainant lamented that she and her husband met the suspect about five years ago.

The PPRO, in the statement, quoted Mrs Bamigboye to have said that the suspect started discussing with them about a serious spiritual calamity awaiting them and their children “if an urgent spiritual step is not taken.”

“Out of fear of the unknown, they agreed to embark on the said spiritual journey and he took them to the Republic of Benin, where he gave them a wooden coffin which he instructed them not to open until he asked them to do so.

“She stated further that the suspect started collecting money from them until they coughed out a total sum of N5m.

“When they realised that they had been swindled, the shock led to the death of her husband.

“Upon the report, the DPO of Sabo division, SP Nicholas Tamunoinom, detailed his detectives to go after the suspect and with the help of members of the public, they succeeded in arresting him on July 25, 2020.

“On interrogation, the suspect confessed to collecting money under false pretences from the couple, but he claimed that he only duped them of N3.5m and not N5m as claimed by the woman, and that he used the money to build a house for himself.”

Oyeyemi added that the command recovered from the suspect some items, including a wooden coffin containing a white cloth and other substances and a horn wrapped with a white cloth and beads.

The PPRO said the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had ordered the transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for proper investigation and prosecution.

Pregnant women at higher risk of contracting covid-19

A new study has suggested that pregnant women are four times more likely to be infected with covid-19 than the general population.

Pregnant women are much more likely to be exposed to the coronavirus than the general population, a new study suggests.

The study published in the journal Science Immunology found that more than six percent of pregnant women in Philadelphia had  antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the official name of the virus.

That’s four-fold the number of people in the City of Brotherly Love who also generated an immune response to the virus.

The team, from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, says the findings raise questions about whether or not pregnant women have a different immune response to COVID-19.

Co-lead author Dr Scott Hensley, an associate professor of Microbiology at Perelman, said in a statement,

“Pregnant women are fairly representative of community exposure, and these data provide more evidence, on top of what we already know with COVID-19, that health and socio-economic equity are inextricably linked. Hopefully, this will help lead to policies that address these inequities.”

16-year old TikTok star hires full time police security following online threats

TikTok star Charli D'Amelio has reportedly hired full-time security after receiving threats on social media.

TMZ reports that the 16-year-old, who is the most-followed star on TikTok , with 75.1 million followers, was threatened on social media by a user who said they were going to turn up at her family's house in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Her family contacted law enforcement, and are reportedly paying overtime for police to be stationed outside their property.

The July 8 threat may have been online posturing, since no one has followed through -- but it was enough to scare Charli's parents into action.

Police are currently investigating.

According to sources who spoke to TMZ, Charli has also received several 'swatting' calls, in which people falsely report an emergency at her home to police.

The family spent a few weeks in Los Angeles from the end of June until mid-July and it is not known whether they were home in Connecticut when the threats were made - however, Charli has since been uploading videos from her Norwalk bedroom, suggesting that they are back in the property.

And it's not just Charli who has earned celebrity status on the app; the rest of her family boast millions of followers of their own.

Charli's older sister Dixie, 18, has 31.9 million followers on the social media app, and even the teens' parents have huge followings: Mom Heidi has five million TikTok fans, and dad Marc has 6.2 million.

This has led to some lucrative sponsorships for Charli and Dixie, who have partnered with Hollister and makeup brand Morphe in the last few months alone.

Earlier this year, Charli became the first TikTok star to land a Super Bowl commercial when she appeared in an ad for Sabra Hummus.

As for getting paid for social media content, the teenager reportedly charges up to $100,000 per post, according to Cosmopolitan.

Alessandro Bogliari, TikTok expert and CEO of The Influencer Marketing Factory, told DailyMail.com: 'This is just the early era for TikTok and there is not a real pricing model for influencers yet, but in general someone with five million followers could make up to $1,500 for a single video asset, depending on their location and some other factors.

Charli was also able to charge $100 for fans to come to a meet-and-greet last winter.

15 countries purchase Russia’s Avifavir COVID-19 medication

Russia says it is delivering its Avifavir medication against Covid-19 to 15 countries already.

Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which took part in the creation of the remedy, disclosed this to Russia-24 broadcaster in an interview.

“We can boast great achievements in this area, as the medication has been delivered to over 15 countries,” Mr Dmitriev said.

“This is really important, as there are in fact only two international antiviral drugs that are delivered to a certain number of countries: The United States’ Remdesivir and the Russian Avifavir.

“Ninety per cent of the produced Remdesivir have been purchased by the U.S.

“So, it is no surprise that 15 countries purchase our medication,” the RDIF CEO explained.

Earlier on Monday, Kromis -- a joint venture of the RDIF and the ChemRar pharmaceutical company announced it had reached agreement on Avifavir deliveries to South Africa and seven countries in Latin America.

Avifavir received a registration certificate of the Russian Ministry of Health in late May, becoming the world’s first favipiravir-based drug approved for treatment of Covid-19.

Ivanka Trump & husband made more than $36m in 2019 alone

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner made somewhere between $36.2 million and $157 million in 2019, financial disclosure records reveal.

The couple, who both serve as Senior Advisors to President Donald Trump, were required to file documents declaring their assets and liabilities with the Office of Government Ethics on Friday.

The exact amount of money the pair made is impossible to determine, as they are only required to 'report in range', according to The Washington Post.

However, even with minimum earnings of $36.2 million, the documents show Ivanka and Jared continue to make huge amounts of outside income while they work in The White House.

The Daily Beast reports that some of that revenue came from Kushner Companies - Jared's family business 'which benefited from a real estate tax break championed by Ivanka herself'.

The filings reportedly show Jared made somewhere between $200,000 and $2.34 million from hotels and other buildings owned by the company at their Pier Village Project in Long Branch, New Jersey.

In 2018, Long Branch was designated an 'Opportunity Zone' as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act spruiked by Ivanka.

Ivanka and Jared's financial disclosure records were blasted by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), who claim the couple are pushing public policies that are actually in their personal interests.

'Ivanka Trump advocated for the Opportunity Zones program while her husband was profiting from it, representing a clear conflict of interest,' CREW's Jordan Libowitz told The Daily Beast.

'The program seems to have been made to be easily exploitable by the rich and well connected, starting with those related to the president.'

Additionally Kushner reported between $100,000 and $1 million from the Vreeland Avenue Associates - part of a real estate complex where six tenants received low-interest loans under the Paycheck Protection Program - also spruiked by Jared and Ivanka.

Meanwhile, Ivanka reported $3.9 million in earnings from her stake in the Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC.

The hotel has long been seen as a potential conflict of interest because it hosts diplomats and other government officials who meet with members of the Trump Administration.

News of the financial filings was met with outrage on Twitter, with several critics claiming Ivanka and Jared's sole purpose for working in The White House was to enhance their personal fortune.

'Isn't that why this family ran for the presidency - to make money? Just shameful and they get away with it!' one raged.

Both Jared and Ivanka have repeatedly denied any conflicts of interests during their time working for the Trump Administration.

Pondei, others spent N5bn as medical allowances - report

The Senate report on the alleged financial recklessness in the Niger Delta Development Commission has revealed how the top management of the agency shared N4.9bn among themselves in the guise of medical checkup.

The document also showed that the management paid N114.9m as supplementary medical allowance to 26  staff member during the same period.

It stated that both disbursements were made when the nation was under lockdown to check Covid-19 spread.

The report was adopted and approved by the Senate shortly before it proceeded on its annual recess penultimate week.

A copy of the document obtained by Punch in Abuja on Monday, indicated that the monies were paid to the individual accounts in March and April this year.

The document indicated that the acting Managing Director, Daniel Pondei, and the two executive directors got N14.2m each.

The report noted that no such payment took place during the first Interim Management Committee led by Joi Nunieh.

It nonetheless, stated that available data showed that the allowance had been in existence even though it appeared to have no specific policy underpinning it.

Jeff Bezos buys another property next to the $165m home he bought in February

Jeff Bezos has forked out $10 million for a Beverly Hills home located right next door to the $165 million compound he purchased in the area back in February.

Real estate records show the Amazon chief - who is the world's richest man with a net worth of $182.2 billion - snapped up the home in an off-market deal earlier this month.

The three- bedroom, four-bathroom home, originally built by architect Sumner Spalding back in 1930, was last listed back in 2018 for the sum of $5.45 million.

Since then, the property has undergone extensive renovations, completed by the design team who also worked on Justin Bieber's Beverly Hills pad.

Listing photos taken prior to the makeover show the light and airy home features a large kitchen and several spacious living areas complete with original fireplaces.

A listing from the time of the 2018 sale also reveals that the home has a library, a media room and a vegetable patch.

He snapped up that nine-acre estate from media mogul David Geffen back in February. The deal was widely reported as the most expensive California home sale of all time.

That estate - which was originally developed by Jack Warner of Warner Bros. - boasts terraces, guest houses, a tennis court, and a nine-hole golf course.

It is also said to be covered in paintings by famous American artists and includes a floor once owned by Napoleon.

It's unclear what Bezos plans to do with the new home next door that he has just purchased.

However, $10 million is pocket change for the world's richest man, who's net worth has skyrocketed within the past year.

According to BuzzFeed, Bezos now makes more than $12 million per hour, or $311 million per day.

Amazon is thriving amid the coronavirus pandemic, and on Thursday the company posted a record quarter with $88.9billion in sales - causing its stocks to climb six percent in after-hours trading.

Bezos already boasts an impressive property portfolio.

In addition to the two properties in Beverly Hills, he also owns a $5 million mansion in the swanky Washington, D.C. suburb of Kalorama.

The double-story brick home is located close by homes owned by Barack Obama and Ivanka Trump.

Meanwhile, he owns four separate apartments inside an art-deco block on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

He bought three of the apartments inside the complex at 25 Central Park West back in 2019 for a reported sum of $80 million.

He then shelled out $16 million this spring for a fourth unit.

According to Architectural Digest, he plans to combine all four units into a 'dream home overlooking Madison Square Park'.

Marcus Rashford makes the front cover of Vogue

Manchester United and England star Marcus Rashford has made the front cover of a special Black Lives Matter-themed edition of British Vogue.

The footballer, 22, shared a photo of the cover on Twitter and said he was 'humbled' to be recognised for his campaign to help vulnerable children that led to a government u-turn on free school meals.

Rashford appears on the cover alongside mental health campaigner and model Adwoa Aboah.

Editor Edward Enninful said the issue is a 'rallying cry for the future' and includes 40 activists described as 'The Faces of Hope'.

Rashford partnered with FareShare, a poverty and food waste charity, in March and raised more than £20million to ensure children are provided with school meals during lockdown.

However, with the government set to stop providing free school meals to around three million children over the summer, the Manchester United star wrote to MPs on June 15 imploring them to 'protect the vulnerable'.

His poignant letter was widely shared and prompted a rapid government u-turn.

He also shared his own experience of growing up poor and, in his interview with Vogue, said: 'I would have failed everyone that had helped me get to where I am today if I didn't put myself out there and say: ''This is not ok – and it needs to change.'' In fact, I would have failed my 10 year old self.'
