Michelle Obama announces she is suffering from depression

Former first lady Michelle Obama says she’s suffering from “low-grade depression” in part because of President Trump.

“I’m dealing with some form of low-grade depression. Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife and just seeing this administration. Watching the hypocrisy of it day in and day out is dispiriting,” Obama said in her new podcast.

The Obamas still live in DC. Their home is less than two miles from the White House in a quiet neighborhood of mansions. First daughter Ivanka Trump lives around the corner.

The former first lady remains revered by Democrats and said she tries to keep up routines such as working out to feel better.

“I try to make sure I get a workout in, although there have been periods throughout this quarantine, where I just have felt too low,” said Obama.

“My spirit is lifted when I’m feeling healthy, when I’m surrounded by good people,” she added.

“I reach out to my family, and to my friends, even in this time of quarantine. You know, I fought to continue to find a way to stay connected to the people in my life who bring me joy, and my girlfriends, my husband, my kids; it’s the small things. It’s the small rituals.”

Nigerian government investigates drug stores over COVID-19 drugs price hike

Federal authorities in Nigeria are investigating some drug stores in the country over outrageous hiking of prices of hydroxychloroquine, a controversial anti-malaria drug used for COVID-19 treatment.

Recall reports went viral about one drug store in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Ebus Pharmacy Limited, was selling hydroxychloroquine at an exorbitant price of N50,000.

The owner of Ebus Pharmacy, Boniface Ebugosi, said the hydroxychloroquine was an imported drug and that the dwindling value of the naira against the dollar was responsible for its high price.

Other drug stores in Port Harcourt were also selling hydroxychloroquine at N50,000 and above.

The drug was never known to be this costly in Nigeria when it was used only for malaria treatment.

RevolutionNow: Agba Jalingo re-arrested in brutal crackdown on protesters nationwide

Several peaceful protesters under the umbrella of #RevolutionNow were molested and arrested Wednesday by security agents from the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police.

The protesters were demanding good governance, proper infrastructural development, end to extrajudicial killings, the sack of service chiefs over the poor security situation in the country, and low employment opportunities,  among other agitations.

The protests were in states such as Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to mark the first anniversary of the #RevolutionNow Movement.

Activists said over 100 protesters have been arrested. According to Deji Adeyanju, a right activist, about 60 protesters were arrested in Abuja around the Unity Fountain and whisked away in police trucks.

Mr Adeyanju, who also took part in the protest, shared on Twitter pictures of protesters who were ordered to lie face down by armed security agents.

“Security agents harassing peaceful protesters but they run or cry when they see Boko Haram or bandits,” he said. “We are currently witnessing a joint madness by the military, police and other security agencies as over 60 of our comrades have been arrested over peaceful #RevolutionNow protest. The Abacha days are here once again..

In Lagos, at least, 10 persons, including Agba Jalingo, a journalist, were arrested by the police, witnesses said.

The protesters were arrested at Ikeja Along during their second convergence for the protest on Wednesday.

Mr Jalingo and the others arrested were sensitising traders and passersby on the need to rise and fight bad governance in Nigeria.

UN Security chief warns that security officials under estimate the risks posed by female ISIS officials

The security risk posed by female ISIS recruits is being 'underestimated' due to gender stereotyping, the head of the UN's counter-terrorism body has said.

Michele Coninsx warned that security services often see female terrorists only as 'victims' and called for a more 'nuanced' approach to dealing with them.

It comes as Shamima Begum, a British 'jihadi bride' who fled her family home in east London in 2015 to join ISIS in Syria, fights to return to the UK so she can stand trial.

Begum, who married an ISIS fighter and had three children by him, was reportedly a member of ISIS's armed military police and enforced its strict sharia laws.

She insists that she did not take part in any violence.

A report by the agency that Ms Coninsx runs - the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate - warned that some UN member states are failing to properly investigate the roles played by women in ISIS.

While many female recruits are victims of the terror cult, it is possible to hold 'simultaneous roles as supporters and victims', the report said.

Those who joined ISIS's so-called caliphate in Syria had 'supported and facilitated war crimes and terror attacks', the report added.

Women's role in violence - including beheadings, mutilation and stoning - is often ignored, the report warned, partly because of how ISIS itself views women.

'While women are often active as online propagandists and recruiters, their involvement in other types of activities, including violence, was less prominently documented online because of ISIS's restrictive gender norms,' the report said.

Ms Coninsx echoed the report's findings in an interview with The Independent, saying that research into women's roles in ISIS lags far behind that of men.

And, what little research has been done in recent years has often not been fed into practice by security services, she said.

'While there is a growing awareness among policymakers and practitioners that more attention must be paid to women in a counterterrorism context, gender biases unfortunately continue to persisted,' she added.

Around 900 Britons are though to have left the UK to join ISIS in Syria and Iraq between 2014, when the terror group began capturing territory, and 2019, when its 'caliphate' collapsed.

It is not clear how many of those recruits were women, but at least 15 so-called 'jihadi brides' - including Shamima Begum - have been publicly identified.

Police arrest 7 suspects over murder of Khafi Kareem’s brother

Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murdering Alexander Kareem, a younger brother to Khafi Kareem, a 2019 housemate of the Big Brother Naija show.

Alexander, 20, was gunned down along Askew Road, Shepherd’s Bush, West London, at around 12:30am on June 8, after he left a convenience store and rode a scooter to a friend’s house.

According to BBC, investigators from the Metropolitan police arrested five men — aged between 18 and 24 — a 16-year-old boy, and a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of being involved in the murder.

Speaking on the development, Wayne Jolley, a detective chief inspector who leads the investigation, said: “This is a significant development in the investigation, however, we will not be complacent.
“We will continue to work hard to make sure those responsible are brought to justice.

“I believe this murder to have been a case of mistaken identity, perpetrated recklessly, and with no regard whatsoever for human life.

“Alexander’s death is a tragic reminder that carrying a gun has devastating consequences, I urge anyone with information to come forward and speak with us.”

It is understood that all the suspects have been taken into custody in London while a white Range Rover thought to be linked to the shooting was found burnt 25 minutes after the police were called.

“This is the most messed up time in my life. Yet my family has held me up relentlessly. I still don’t know how to come back from all that has happened,” Khaffi wrote while speaking of her brother’s death.

Coca Cola reportedly paid scientists to downplay the role sugary drinks play in fuelling obesity

Coca-Cola's work with scientists to downplay the role sugar plays in contributing to obesity has been called a 'low point in this history of public health.'

The beverage company donated millions of dollars to a team of researchers at a non-profit claiming to look into causes of excess weight gain in the US.

However, the team ended up being a 'front group' for Coca-Cola and promoted the idea that it was a lack of exercise, not a bad diet, that was the primary driver of the US obesity epidemic.

What's more, the group tried to downplay the fact that Coca-Cola was a donor of its research, and how much money the company gifted.

For the analysis, published in Public Health Nutrition, researchers from the University of Oxford; the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; the University of Bocconi in Milan, Italy; and US Right to Know teamed up.

They looked at more than 18,000 pages of emails between the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, West Virginia University, and the University of Colorado.

Both universities were part of Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN), claiming to be a non-profit organization studying obesity, which ran from 2014 to 2015.

But academics now say the group was created by Coke to minimize links between obesity and sugary drinks.

Coca-Cola directly funded GEBN, contributing at least $1.5 million by 2015, and distributed millions more to GEBN-affiliated academics to conduct research.

'Coke used public health academics to carry out classic tobacco tactics to protect its profits,' said Gary Ruskin, the executive director of US Right to Know

'It's a low point in the history of public health and a warning about the perils of accepting corporate funding for public health work.'

There were two main strategies, with the first being information and messaging.

This included obscuring Coca-Cola as the funding source and shaping the evidence based on diet and public health-related issues.

For example, in one email chain, the researchers tried to inflate the numbers of partners and donors so it wouldn't seem like Coca-Cola was the primary donor.

'We are certainly going to have to disclose this [Coca-Cola funding] at some point. Our preference would be to have other funders on board first… Right now, we have two funders. Coca Cola and an anonymous individual donor… Does including the Universities as funders/supporters pass the red face test?' one email read.

They also asked if universities had policies about disclosing the amount of any gift so they wouldn't have to reveal how much Coca-Cola gave.

'We are managing some GEBN inquiries and while we disclose Coke as a sponsor we don’t want to disclose how much they gave,' another email read.

The second strategy was coalition building, which included establishing Coca-Cola's network of researchers and establishing relationships with policymakers.

This included researchers meeting members oft he West Virginia Legislature and Coca-Cola supporting a small group of scientists called the 'email family' by then-vice president of Coca-Cola Rhona Applebaum.

'Coke's 'email family' is just the latest example of the appalling commercialization of the university and public health work,' said Ruskin.

'Public health academics in an 'email family' with Coke is like having criminologists in an email family with Al Capone.'

Lagos revokes 2018 land use charge

Lagos state government has cancelled 2018 land use charge and has reverted to pre-2018 land use charges, while upholding the 2018 method of valuation.

The government announced this at a press conference addressed by the state commissioner for Finance, Dr. Rabiu Olowo at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Center, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja on Wednesday.

The government has also waived penalties for those who defaulted in payment of land use charge for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019, which according to the commissioner translates to a loss of revenue to the state amounting to N5.6b.

Olowo said the new Land Use Charge Law 2020 is a product of series of stakeholders meetings and is designed to accommodate the agitations of Lagosians and reduce the financial pressure on citizens as it relates to Land Use.

The new law reduces the penalties for defaulters from between 25 to 100 per cent to 10 to 50 per cent; there is also a 48 per cent reduction in the annual charge rates for different properties.

“Still on reductions, another major sector that had its charge reduced is Agricultural sector, which annual charge rate for Agricultural land was reduced from 0.076% to 0.01%. This is an 87% reduction from the old rate.”
The government further re-introduced the 15 per cent early payment discount which has been increased by a 10 per cent special COVID-19 incentive making it 25 per cent when payment is paid before due date.

Unlike in the 2018 law pensioners now include retirees from private and public institutions in the state (or any person that has attained the age of sixty (60) years and has ceased to be actively engaged in any activity or business for remuneration) and their properties are exempted from paying land use charge.

Also “profit oriented cemeteries and burial grounds are no longer exempted from payment of Land Use Charge,” same thing goes for private libraries.

Olowo said, “We have completed the LUC Reform process and review of bills. Property owners should expect to receive their 2020 LUC bills shortly and we expect property owners to leverage on the 25% early payment discount.

“Furthermore, the LUC payment can now be made Online via https://ift.tt/3fx7O72 Payment can also be made using USSD Code to any of our designated banks with the appropriate code stated below:

It would be recalled that the land use charge was increased via a law under the administration of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and it generated a lot of heat among residents with widespread protest as resident rejected the outrageous increase.

When the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration took over the reins of governance, it promised to redress the situation and effect some reform which resulted in the latest development seen as a huge relief to property owners across the state.

32 Nigerian universities team up to work towards the development of covid-19 vaccines

Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC) Prof. Abubakar Rasheed on Tuesday announced that 32 federal, state and private universities are conducting different stages of research to tackle direct and collateral impacts of COVID-19.

Prof. Rasheed, who was represented by Dr. Suleiman Yusuf, Deputy Executive Secretary, Academics, stated this in Abuja at a news conference on the contribution of the Nigerian University System toward mitigating the impact of the pandemic.

He noted that the researches would be building up over the coming months.

According to him, the universities will not relent in their efforts until COVID-19 is consigned to history and lessons learned for tackling future national epidemics and global pandemics.

“As at June 22, not less than 32 universities are involved in different stages of research aimed at galvanising research toward the development of vaccines and non-vaccines.

“As in many other parts of the world, the pandemic has challenged our knowledge system, which has proved inadequate and insufficiently robust enough to respond to the challenges.

“Only few institutions have been able to utilise open and distance learning system to keep students engaged while the pandemic lasted and only few laboratories continued with research and development activities.

“Nonetheless, the few who engaged in research and innovation work have demonstrated the need for a well-funded and robustly organised national research and innovation system to catalyse the national response,” he said.

Prof. Rasheed added that in the area of Genomic research, the African Centres of Excellence (ACE), particularly the Centre for the Genomics of Infectious Diseases at the Redeemer’s University, Ede was collaborating with the University of Cambridge for the development of vaccines.

He said other ACEs in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Universities of Lagos, Benin, Port Harcourt and Jos, which served as national testing and screening centres, had proved that world-class research and development was possible in Nigeria.

Students return home as Enugu government shifts reopening of schools

There was no resumption of schools in Enugu State yesterday, as some students who had gone to their schools in anticipation of the reopening, were sent back home on the orders of the state government.

It was learnt that they were told to go home and await further directives on the date of resumption.

Commissioner for Education, Professor Uche Eze, who spoke on the development, insisted that no school in the state would reopen until Friday, adding however, that only SSS3 and JSS3 students would be allowed to resume.

He stated that those expected to be in school as from Tuesday, August 4, 2020 were teachers in exit classes, adding that government would use between Tuesday and Thursday to train them on how to handle the returning students amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

When The Guardian visited a school yesterday, some teachers were sighted holding a meeting at a section of the school compound.Eze, however, stressed that although the government had worked hard to reduce the spread of coronavirus and was ready to reopen schools, only schools that have met the stipulated guidelines on safety measures would be allowed to reopen.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his efforts at minimising the impact of coronavirus pandemic on the people of the state.

Speaking at the CACOVID palliatives distribution in Enugu, its representative, Mrs. Chiaka Mbagwu, disclosed that the group was proud of the steps Governor Ugwuanyi had so far taken to keep the people safe.

Mbagwu explained that CACOVID was an Organised Private Sector (OPS) initiative in partnership with the Federal Government, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other stakeholders with the aim of combating COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

She added that Ugwuanyi administration’s commitment to the fight against the pandemic, as well as its efforts to safeguard and cushion the impact of the disease on the state’s residents, informed their decision to support the state through donation of food items such as garri, rice, pasta, noodles, sugar and salt.

Mbagwu, who is Regional Head, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Enugu, said, “CACOVID has sought to provide continuing support to the government in the fight against COVID-19 through the provision of palliative items for Nigerians.”

Speaking, Ugwuanyi commended CACOVID for its support, saying his administration had constantly engaged in distribution of palliatives including food items to vulnerable persons, groups and communities to cushion the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Flood: FCTA pulls down 102 houses in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has demolished 102 houses built on water channels in the area.  The development followed last week’s flood incident which claimed the lives of five people in Giri-Kpasere, along Airport Road in Gwagwalada Area Council.

FCT Department of Development Control said the illegal houses had been marked down for demolition more than one year ago, and that the government had given the affected residents enough time to move out of the flood-prone areas.

Deputy Director, Monitoring and Enforcement, Department of Department Control, Garba Kwamkur said the government could not spare the houses anymore, following the recent forecast of more rains and consequential flooding.

Kwamkur noted the community was part of the land covering about 260 hectares allocated within the Abuja Master Plan for the development of the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada, but some indigenous people and other squatters are staying there temporarily.

Indian restaurant offers ‘COVID Curry’ to scared customers

An Indian restaurant is hoping to win back customers afraid of eating out during the pandemic with a special “COVID Curry” and “Mask Naans”.
An Indian restaurant is hoping to win back customers afraid of eating out during the pandemic with a special “COVID Curry” and “Mask Naans”.

“This has been a really tough time for us and for our entire sector,” Yash Solanki, owner of the vegetarian Vedic eatery in the western city of Jodphur, told AFP.

The fried vegetable balls have been shaped to look like the “crowned” coronavirus, while the accompanying breads look like surgical masks.

Solanki said that they had also added, and advertised, that their COVID curry had extra Indian herbs and spices that are good for people’s health.

“Even with recently relaxed curbs, the fear still dominates. People are still very reluctant to eat out,” Solanki said.

Almost 800 people are dying daily from coronavirus in the world’s second-most populous nation, with around 50,000 new infections reported every 24 hours.

The country has had 1.8 million cases, the third-highest in the world behind the United States and Brazil, and more than 38,000 deaths.

Dybala beats Ronaldo to win Serie A MVP award

Argentine footballer, Paulo Dybala, has beaten his Juventus teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to the Italian Serie A Player of the Year award for the 2019/2020 season.

Serie A announced Dybala as the winner of the annual prize on Tuesday, stopping Ronaldo from retaining the title he won in his first year at the Allianz Stadium.

Italian football’s main governing body named the 26-year-old forward as the season’s most valuable player, while the club’s newest signing Dejan Kulusevski clinched the Young Player of the Year prize for an outstanding campaign at Parma.

Dybala has scored 11 goals in 33 Serie A appearances for Juventus this term and also recorded 11 assists.

He struggled to adapt to a new role in the team following Ronaldo’s arrival from Real Madrid in 2018 but has enjoyed good form since Maurizio Sarri’s appointment last summer.

Ronaldo might have thought he’d done enough to retain Serie A’s top individual accolade after contributing 31 goals to the Bianconeri’s cause, but his final tally was still five behind Lazio top striker Immobile, who earned the Capocannoniere – the title awarded to the highest goalscorer in the league.

There was more celebration for Juventus as Wojciech Szczesny received the best goalkeeper award.

Inter Milan’s Stefan De Vrij, Atalanta’s Alejandro Gomez, and Lazio’s talisman Ciro Immobile were acknowledged in defensive, midfield and forward roles.

UN, US condole with Lebanon after deadly Beirut explosions

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has commiserated with the people and government of Lebanon over Tuesday’s Beirut explosions.

No fewer than 100 people died while 2,700 others were injured in the massive blasts at the city’s port, the Minister of Health, Hamad Hassan, said.

Officials said the two blasts originated from highly explosive materials stored in a warehouse, although investigations were ongoing to determine the exact cause.

The UN chief’s reaction came in a statement by his deputy spokesman, Mr Farhan Haq.

“The Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the people and government of Lebanon following the horrific explosions in Beirut today.

“He wishes a speedy recovery to the injured, including several United Nations personnel working in Lebanon.

“The United Nations remains committed to supporting Lebanon at this difficult time, and is actively assisting in the response to this incident,” Haq said.

U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Dorothy Shea, also reacted to the incident with a condolence message, in which she described the explosions as horrific.

“Having witnessed the horrific explosions at the port this evening, our heartfelt sympathies go out to the victims and their families.

30 Nigerians stranded in Lebanon rescued

Thirty Nigerians, who were trafficked and left stranded in Lebanon have been rescued, and are among a total of 150 victims awaiting evacuation to Nigeria.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) made this known in a statement by Gabriel Odu of its Media, Public Relations and Protocol Unit on
Tuesday.

The commission said the rescue came after a video footage of the stranded Nigerians making an appeal to the Federal Government and well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid viral on the Internet.

According to it, the appeal for help by the stranded Nigerians led to their rescue by officials of the country’s mission in Lebanon.

The stranded Nigerians have already been relocated to a more conducive apartment.

“They will be part of 150 others to be evacuated to Nigeria after they were trafficked and left stranded in Lebanon.

“The Lebanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Houssam Diab disclosed the evacuation plans when the Management of NIDCOM, led by the Secretary, Dr Sule Bassi, visited that country’s mission in Abuja,” Odu said in the statement.

He quoted Diab as saying that the 150 girls would be returned home in batches with the first group of 110 people leaving Beirut for Lagos on Aug. 12.

The second batch sws expected to arrive Abuja on Aug. 16.

Six ‘Yahoo Boys’ jailed in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of six internet fraudsters popularly known as Yahoo Boys.

The fraudsters, who specialised in Business E-mail Compromise (BCG), internet fraud, and other related offences are: Chisom Emmanuel Odom; Isajimi Joshua; Tafa Basit; Adeleye Oladele Benjamin, Chukwu Simon and Amoo Tunmise.

They were sentenced and convicted by different Federal High Court judges at the Federal Capital Territory on charges bordering on internet frauds.

The convicts’ problems started when residents of their respective neighbourhoods petitioned the EFCC, alleging them of suspicious lifestyles as signals of criminality.

Investigation by the Commission revealed that the fraudsters converted their residences to dens, where they were operating freely and defrauding members of the public.

Items discovered from them, upon their arrests, were electronic gadgets, ranging from sophisticated computer systems, software and hardware devices, browsers amongst others.

They were subsequently charged to different courts where they pleaded guilty.

Justice F.O.G Ogunbanjo, convicted and sentenced Odom and Joshua while Justice Ojukwu of Federal High Court, convicted Benjamin to two years imprisonment. She also convicted and sentenced Tunmise and ordered him to pay a fine of N1million.

In the same vein, Justice Binta Nyako convicted and sentenced Simon and Basit to six months and three months respectively.
