Nigerian nurses attack Olamide over ‘Wonma’ video

Nigerian rapper and singer, Olamide has been forced to bring down the video to his hit song, ‘Wonma’ when he got attacked by Nigerian nurses and lovers of the profession.

The YBNL rapper was dragged on social media over accusations that he portrayed nurses as s3xual objects in the video.
.
The music video which was released some days ago featured vixens dressed in nurse costumes engrossed in various explicit activities and moves while on duty.

Olamide later pulled down the video to the song he shared on his Instagram page but it was a little too late.

Nursing World Nigeria, An online outfit that connects Nigerian nurses, also released a statement on the issue:

''Thanks to everyone who took time to report and request that the video by @Olamide posted on Instagram be taken down.
.
While we acknowledge the fact that @Olamide has brought the sounds and beats of Nigeria and Africa to the world at large, the fact still remains that @Olamide recent music video misrepresents and totally disrespects the Nursing profession and healthcare providers. With a video ‘WONMA’ depicting nurses as sextoys and sex objects to over 3.4M and 6.9M followers on @Twitter, @AppleMusic and @instagram.
.
It was heartbreaking to say the least. To those who also made the calls and desired to remain unnamed we also appreciate you.

To everyone who used the hashtag: #NursesAreNotSexualObjects we also say thank you.''

Netflix star Daisy Coleman dies aged 23

Daisy Coleman, who starred in the Netflix documentary Audrie and Daisy, has died.

The 23-year-old’s mother, Melinda, confirmed the sad news on Tuesday, stating her daughter died by suicide.

She told TMZ: ‘She was my best friend and amazing daughter. I think she had to make make it seem like I could live without her. I can’t. I wish I could have taken the pain from her!’

Daisy was r.a.p.e.d at the age of 14 in 2012 at a house party in Missouri. No one was ever held responsible for the incident.

Melinda added: ‘She never recovered from what those boys did to her and it’s just not fair. My baby girl is gone.’

The youngster appeared in Netflix’s 2016 documentary which followed Daisy and her family as they dealt with the horrific ordeal.

The film also documented the s.e.x.ual assault case of Audrie Pott in 2012. Audrie tragically died by suicide 10 days after her ordeal.

Daisy tried to find good out of her past trauma and co-founded the organisation SafeBAE, which aims to end sexual assault among school students and provide help for the victims.

Following Daisy’s death, the organisation said they were heartbroken and had ‘suffered an irreplaceable loss’.

Just last year, Daisy’s family had suffered further tragedy after the death of her younger brother who was killed in a car accident.

Daisy tried hard to turn her life around after the r.a.p.e and attended Missouri Valley College.

Reflecting on the aftermath, Daisy told the Mail Online in 2017: ‘After my case went viral I took a break for a while, but during that time period I noticed a lot of other victims and survivors had come forward.

‘Seeing me doing it so publicly, I felt like that gave them a space to tell their own story and I was really inspired by that.’

Daisy explained how she ‘did not cope well’ after the incident and felt ‘very negative’ towards herself.

But she added: ‘I feel no resentment towards my attacker only because I have come to realise that he was only passing on some form of negativity to me which at some point was passed onto him so once I came to that realisation… that made me forgive him in a sense even though he never presented an apology.’

Army: Soldiers involved in Ebonyi bullion van robbery not our personnel

The Nigerian Army says the soldiers allegedly arrested over a bullion van robbery in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, are not its personnel.

Seven suspects were arrested by operatives of the inspector-general of police intelligence response team (IRT) in connection with the robbery attack.

The attack, which led to the death of four policemen escorting the van which was transporting money from Enugu to Abakaliki, occurred last Wednesday.

A soldier attached to Command Day Secondary School, Nigeria Army Cantonment, Ikeja, Lagos, and a dismissed soldier who was attached to 7 Division Garrison Maiduguri, Borno state, were identified among the suspects.

But in a statement, Aliyu Yusuf, deputy director, army public relations in 82 division of the Nigerian army, said the two alleged soldiers are not serving in any of Nigerian Army’s units, commands, formations or divisions.

He said the two soldiers, Emeka Harrison and Ayeni Samuel, had been dismissed from the force since 2015 and 2018 respectively.

“The attention of Headquarters 82 Division Nigerian Army has been drawn to on-line publication on the unfortunate Bullion Van Robbery incident at Abakaliki, Ebonyi State on July 29 which led to the arrest of two suspected dismissed soldiers and other gangsters involved in the act,” Yusuf said.

“It is necessary to inform the public that the so-called soldiers in the report are not personnel of the Nigerian Army since 2015 and 2018; when both Corporal Ayeni Samuel and Corporal Emeka Harrison were dismissed.

“Available record shows that Dismissed 03NA/53/088 Corporal Ayeni Samuel was dismissed in 2018 for desertion and pipeline vandalism at 174 Battalion.

“The dismissed soldier was attached to 174 Battalion from Command Day Secondary School, Ikeja for United Nations mission in the year 2013. Dismissed Corporal Ayeni deserted the Unit and was later arrested for pipeline vandalism at Ikorodu in Lagos State in 2018.

“In line with Nigerian Army extant rules and regulations, Ayeni was officially tried and awarded dismissed regiment as a Corporal and not Sergeant; as claimed in the online story.

“Also, dismissed Corporal Emeka Harrison was tried and dismissed regiment from 7 Division Garrison, Maiduguri since 2015.”

Rock & Roll legend Neil Young sues Trump's campaign for playing his songs during rallies without permission

Roll legend Neil Young has sued President Donald Trump's reelection campaign for copyright infringement over its use of two songs at the President's political rallies and events.

"This complaint is not intended to disrespect the rights and opinions of American citizens, who are free to support the candidate of their choosing," Young's lawyers wrote in the complaint, which was filed on Tuesday in the Southern District of New York and posted on the artist's website.

"However, Plaintiff in good conscience cannot allow his music to be used as a 'theme song' for a divisive, un-American campaign of ignorance and hate."

The President's reelection campaign repeatedly played "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Devil's Sidewalk" at several rallies without seeking permission, including at the June 20 rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that drew widespread criticism for taking place amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, the complaint said.

It's not the first time that the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and two-time Grammy-winning artist has voiced his opposition to the Trump campaign's use of his songs.

"I stand in solidarity with the Lakota Sioux & this is NOT ok with me," Young tweeted in response to a video showing "Rockin' in the Free World" being played before the President's July 3 rally at Mount Rushmore.

Young has levied public objections with the Trump campaign since it first played the song during the President's campaign announcement on June 16, 2015, Young's lawyers wrote.

Nigerians are not banned from Dubai – Official clarifies

An official from the Dubai Tourism has debunked the viral fake news that Nigerians have been banned from visiting the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Stella Fubara-Obinwa, its Director Africa, International Operations, made the clarification during a webinar organised by the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA), themed “Tourism Business Opportunities in Face of New Normal.”

Fubara-Obinwa said there was never a time, nor was there any publication, which reported that Nigerians had been banned from visiting the UAE.

“I challenge people to show me any publication from the United Arab Emirates which states that Nigerians had been banned from the country.

“This is fake news and am not happy with the development from the Nigeria travel agents.

“Nigeria is very important to Dubai; Nigeria has the highest number of travellers to Dubai, out of the 41 sub-Sahara countries.

“As a matter of fact, Dubai is ready to accommodate visitors, likewise every hospitality business, while we adhere to the new COVID-19 restrictions,” she said.

Fubara-Obinwa said Dubai had been opened to tourists from July 7, adding that safety measures had been put in place across all hospitality and tourism outfits.

She noted that Dubai was recently recognised as a safe destination by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

According to her, in Dubai now, a tourist is expected to have a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test at any accredited laboratory in their countries, 96 hours before embarking on a trip to Dubai.

She explained that this would make travellers ascertain their COVID-19 status prior to their journey to Dubai to guide against spreading the virus.

Woman angers family after changing 'complicated' name without telling them

A woman who legally changed her name a year ago has been slammed by her family for not telling them sooner.

She said her name used to be "Emma-Leigh Izobel Lastname", but she often went by "Em" instead.

She explained: "Mom likes unique names, and yes my siblings have similarly weird names.

"And yes, the hyphen in my first name was a pain in the a**."

The woman eventually made the decision to change it by deed poll to something a little simpler for "professional purposes".

But a year after doing so she told her family - and they weren't impressed.

She said: "I'm now Emily Isabelle Lastname. I changed it for professional purposes since I felt my old name wasn’t suited for a more serious setting. Also I was tired of people spelling it wrong.

"I’ve spent the last however long changing all my other legal/personal stuff to the new, correct name. I finally told my mother since it might be important someday.

"I figured she'd not like me changing it but she was actually very emotional. My sister also thinks I shouldn’t have changed it without telling anyone first and that it was mean to do that to our mom.

"My mother is acting a bit over the top in my opinion and I don’t see how this is a huge deal, since the name is the same just spelled differently."

The woman took to Reddit to ask users whether she's being unreasonable by changing her name.

One person said: "You have to live with the name, not your mom. Plus, the changes are mostly spelling rather than sound, so it’s not like it’s changed anything drastic about what she calls you."

Another added: "I get that naming your kid is a big deal, but some parents really seem to forget that they can only dictate what the kid gets called for so long. Once the kid develops their own opinions and personality?

"That goes out the window completely. I think the name your mom gave you was lovely, but I can also see where it might be frustrating."

A third also commented: "Your mom seems to be very selfish with this bit. She doesn't seem to realise the burden of having a weirdly spelled common name/long name."

Whereas one person said: "Changing the name isn't the problem, it's doing it without having a heart to heart with her mother first that's the problem.

"From her mother's perspective, not only did her daughter throw away a name that she put a lot of thought into and loved, she didn't even have the kindness to let her know and explain why she felt she needed to do it. Of course she's hurt."

I want to leave BBNaija house – Lucy

Big Brother Naija season 5 housemate Lucy says she would love to leave the reality TV show due to the challenges she has been facing.

The former head of house made this known on Wednesday while discussing with fellow housemate Dorathy.

The 30-year-old entrepreneur from Lagos stated that she is fed up with housemates not taking her suggestions during tasks and selecting their favourites.

Lucy said: “I’d rather not be here than cause so many things in Biggie’s house. Let me just leave before I cause problems. I will learn from outside. I don’t want to be seeing some certain things.”

However, Dorathy advised her to stay, learn from housemates and quit being too emotional.

During their discussion, Dorathy also told Lucy about her relationship with Ozo and how the male housemate stands to benefit more from her than she could benefit from him.

Petrol prices going up, oil marketers await signal from PPPRA

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) is awaiting signals from the
Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to jack up the pump price of petrol from the present N143.80.

IPMAN warned its members who have jumped the gun to tarry awhile for the PPPRA.

NNPC and Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) increased the ex-depot price of premium motor spirit (PMS), known as petrol, from N132.62 to N138.62 per litre.

The PPMC Manager, Sales, Mohammed Bello, had disclosed the new price in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Bello said that that the new price would come into effect from Aug. 5.

The ex-depot price is the price at which depot owners sell the commodity to retail outlets.

Though petrol pricing has been deregulated, PPPRA plays a role in fixing pump prices for petroleum products, by way of guiding prices.

The Agency monitors market trends and advise the NNPC and Oil Marketing Companies on the monthly market-based guiding price, which shall include the indicative retail price at which the product shall be sold across the country

The National Public Relations Officer of IPMAN, Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu, said the association would brief its members as soon as it received directive from PPPRA.

Yakubu advised marketers to sell at the old rate, pending when PPPRA would announce its monthly pricing modulation for the product.

A survey conducted by NAN on Wednesday in Abuja indicated that major marketers at Wuse, Gwarimpa, Maitama and Wuye had not adjusted their pumps to reflect the new price.

The PPPRA in the last four months has adjusted pump prices thrice.

We will retrieve N96bn stolen during Ajimobi’s tenure – Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, says his administration would retreive the state’s funds allegedly looted by officials of the administration of late Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Taiwo Adisa, the governor said this on Wednesday at the commencement of the construction of the 21km Ajia-Airport-New Ife Expressway Road, in Ajia town.

The 21-kilometre road project was awarded at the cost of N8.5 billion.

Although the governor did not mention his predecessor’s name, he stated that the funds stolen in 96 months preceding his assumption of office would be retrieved.

Ajimobi ruled the state for eight years which is the same as 96 months before Makinde took over.

While addressing the criticisms trailing the announcement of N100 billion bond issuance by the state, the governor stated that the past administration stole N1 billion a month for 96 months.

Makinde said, “I heard somebody criticising us on the radio concerning the N100 billion bond and was of the opinion that this administration wants to put the state in debt. I think our people need to start telling them that Governor Makinde is not like that.

“For the period of eight years they spent in office, they were only preoccupied with how to corner N1 billion monthly into their private pockets every day they went to the office.

“They spent 96 months in office, that means they have Oyo States N96 billion with them. We will retrieve every fund that belongs to Oyo people for the purpose of infrastructure development.

“So, tell them that the EFCC of Oyo State is coming for them. I want to assure you that we will retrieve the stolen money of the state from them and use the funds to build infrastructure like this.”

Makinde said his administration would drastically reduce the infrastructure deficit in the state within a very short time.

Groomzilla bans wedding guests from having dyed hair, tattoos, and flat shoes

A groom claims he and his bride have been the subject of unfair backlash after banning family and friends from having unnaturally dyed hair, visible tattoos, or piercings at their wedding.

The 29-year-old man said they wanted their guests to be formally dressed for their wedding shoot because they spent a large amount of money on their photographer.

He said they had to warn one of their mothers that she couldn't wear the cocktail style dress she had her eye on, but they also told a family friend she wasn't allowed to bring flat shoes to change into.

He posted to Reddit saying they had spent a lot of money on their white-tie even and wanted it to go well, adding they had spent months planning their big day.

He wrote: "One thing we are really looking forward to is our wedding shoot.

"We have spent a large amount of our own money on a photographer, who we hired after weeks of research and shopping recommendations.

"The photographer is highly, highly sought after in our area and we were lucky to book him last year in advance. So naturally we are taking this seriously."

He added: "The invitations we sent explicitly told our guests what we'd be expecting from them (white tie, no unnaturally dyed hair, no visible tattoos or piercings) and that they were free to decline the invitation if they had a problem with this.

"We also sent everybody who RSVP'd a reminder over email several weeks ago repeating this instruction."

The man said both sets of parents, cousins, siblings, and "many more people" have all messaged them privately to ask them to be more flexible with their dress code. But the pair have stood firm.

"This isn't happening, so we have just pointed to our "white tie only" policy and told them they accepted the rules when they RSVP'd.

"In our opinion, while wearing knee-length dresses and suits (rather than a tux) might be appropriate for "day to day life," they will doubtlessly look out of place at a wedding that is supposed to be fully formal."

He added that they have since been branded "a***holes" and are not backing down.

He added: "We have even told our guests that if anyone has a problem with this, they are free to drop out (even though we will still be paying for their seats now) and not attend."

His post was met with many calling him out for the strict policy.

One pointed out: "Requiring heels is incredibly ableist on top of sexist (and if floor length gowns are a must, who would even notice flats under the dress?) and some guests may not feel comfortable disclosing health concerns that prevent wearing them for a full night."

Another added: ''White tie in a non white tie crowd is an a**hole move.

"Insisting on strictly enforcing it is even more so. It’s one thing for people who regularly go to such events, and another if you require people to buy a whole new expensive outfit just for your wedding."

Michelle Obama announces she is suffering from depression

Former first lady Michelle Obama says she’s suffering from “low-grade depression” in part because of President Trump.

“I’m dealing with some form of low-grade depression. Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife and just seeing this administration. Watching the hypocrisy of it day in and day out is dispiriting,” Obama said in her new podcast.

The Obamas still live in DC. Their home is less than two miles from the White House in a quiet neighborhood of mansions. First daughter Ivanka Trump lives around the corner.

The former first lady remains revered by Democrats and said she tries to keep up routines such as working out to feel better.

“I try to make sure I get a workout in, although there have been periods throughout this quarantine, where I just have felt too low,” said Obama.

“My spirit is lifted when I’m feeling healthy, when I’m surrounded by good people,” she added.

“I reach out to my family, and to my friends, even in this time of quarantine. You know, I fought to continue to find a way to stay connected to the people in my life who bring me joy, and my girlfriends, my husband, my kids; it’s the small things. It’s the small rituals.”

Nigerian government investigates drug stores over COVID-19 drugs price hike

Federal authorities in Nigeria are investigating some drug stores in the country over outrageous hiking of prices of hydroxychloroquine, a controversial anti-malaria drug used for COVID-19 treatment.

Recall reports went viral about one drug store in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Ebus Pharmacy Limited, was selling hydroxychloroquine at an exorbitant price of N50,000.

The owner of Ebus Pharmacy, Boniface Ebugosi, said the hydroxychloroquine was an imported drug and that the dwindling value of the naira against the dollar was responsible for its high price.

Other drug stores in Port Harcourt were also selling hydroxychloroquine at N50,000 and above.

The drug was never known to be this costly in Nigeria when it was used only for malaria treatment.

RevolutionNow: Agba Jalingo re-arrested in brutal crackdown on protesters nationwide

Several peaceful protesters under the umbrella of #RevolutionNow were molested and arrested Wednesday by security agents from the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police.

The protesters were demanding good governance, proper infrastructural development, end to extrajudicial killings, the sack of service chiefs over the poor security situation in the country, and low employment opportunities,  among other agitations.

The protests were in states such as Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to mark the first anniversary of the #RevolutionNow Movement.

Activists said over 100 protesters have been arrested. According to Deji Adeyanju, a right activist, about 60 protesters were arrested in Abuja around the Unity Fountain and whisked away in police trucks.

Mr Adeyanju, who also took part in the protest, shared on Twitter pictures of protesters who were ordered to lie face down by armed security agents.

“Security agents harassing peaceful protesters but they run or cry when they see Boko Haram or bandits,” he said. “We are currently witnessing a joint madness by the military, police and other security agencies as over 60 of our comrades have been arrested over peaceful #RevolutionNow protest. The Abacha days are here once again..

In Lagos, at least, 10 persons, including Agba Jalingo, a journalist, were arrested by the police, witnesses said.

The protesters were arrested at Ikeja Along during their second convergence for the protest on Wednesday.

Mr Jalingo and the others arrested were sensitising traders and passersby on the need to rise and fight bad governance in Nigeria.

UN Security chief warns that security officials under estimate the risks posed by female ISIS officials

The security risk posed by female ISIS recruits is being 'underestimated' due to gender stereotyping, the head of the UN's counter-terrorism body has said.

Michele Coninsx warned that security services often see female terrorists only as 'victims' and called for a more 'nuanced' approach to dealing with them.

It comes as Shamima Begum, a British 'jihadi bride' who fled her family home in east London in 2015 to join ISIS in Syria, fights to return to the UK so she can stand trial.

Begum, who married an ISIS fighter and had three children by him, was reportedly a member of ISIS's armed military police and enforced its strict sharia laws.

She insists that she did not take part in any violence.

A report by the agency that Ms Coninsx runs - the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate - warned that some UN member states are failing to properly investigate the roles played by women in ISIS.

While many female recruits are victims of the terror cult, it is possible to hold 'simultaneous roles as supporters and victims', the report said.

Those who joined ISIS's so-called caliphate in Syria had 'supported and facilitated war crimes and terror attacks', the report added.

Women's role in violence - including beheadings, mutilation and stoning - is often ignored, the report warned, partly because of how ISIS itself views women.

'While women are often active as online propagandists and recruiters, their involvement in other types of activities, including violence, was less prominently documented online because of ISIS's restrictive gender norms,' the report said.

Ms Coninsx echoed the report's findings in an interview with The Independent, saying that research into women's roles in ISIS lags far behind that of men.

And, what little research has been done in recent years has often not been fed into practice by security services, she said.

'While there is a growing awareness among policymakers and practitioners that more attention must be paid to women in a counterterrorism context, gender biases unfortunately continue to persisted,' she added.

Around 900 Britons are though to have left the UK to join ISIS in Syria and Iraq between 2014, when the terror group began capturing territory, and 2019, when its 'caliphate' collapsed.

It is not clear how many of those recruits were women, but at least 15 so-called 'jihadi brides' - including Shamima Begum - have been publicly identified.
