The chairmanship election of the Nigerian Medical Association, Enugu branch yesterday evening turned bloody as thugs invaded the venue and scatted the whole process. The thugs are believed to have been hired by a faction of the body.

Members of the association who gathered at the Michael Okpara square for the election suffered serious injuries inflicted on them by the hired thugs,

The thugs, numbering over thirty, stormed the venue with dangerous weapons while voting was going on and started destroying chairs, tables and canopies among other objects being used for the election.

They upturned the ballot boxes and pounced on members of the electoral committee leading to the doctors scampering to safety for fear of losing their lives.

The NMA chairman in the state, Dr Ike Okwesili and some excos were not spared in the attack as they were thoroughly beaten.

‘How we escaped death in Ebonyi bullion van attack’

The two drivers of the bullion van conveying money from Enugu State to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, last week, which was attacked by four armed robbers, on Thursday narrated how they escaped from the robbers with the van.

Recall that four policemen died in the incident.

The drivers (names withheld for security purposes), who were on contract employment with one of the new generation banks in Enugu, said the going was smooth until they arrived at Ezzamgbo Junction, in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

One of them said, “Hell was suddenly let loose as bullets started flying from all corners. The bandits were stationed at the point where a flyover is currently being erected by the Ebonyi state government. The next thing we saw was the bodies of the police escorts in the police van that was leading the convoy dropping one after another on the road.

“My colleague urged me to be careful not to run over any of them in case any of them was still alive. I did exactly as he suggested and maneuvered the bullion van through the bodies on the road.

“One of them shot at the van at close range but the bulletproof windscreen didn’t give in. So they started shooting at the tyres and got one of the back tyres which deflated instantly.

“I had not choice than to continue without one tyre and was moving at 60km per hour. I didn’t allow any vehicle to overtake me until I got to Abakaliki, where met three police checkpoints and I alerted them.”

They explained that the robbers focused more on the police escorts, than the bullion van.

Osun fashion designer attacked by bribe-seeking policeman battles for life

A 20-year-old fashion designer, Ayomide Taiwo, is lying unconscious after allegedly being attacked by a yet-to-be identified policeman attached to the Ibokun Divisional Headquarters, Osun State, on Tuesday.

Ayomide, a resident of Owena, was travelling back to his base from Iragbiji after the Eid-el-Kabir festival with his friend, Wasiu Oladimeji, when their motorcycle was stopped by some policemen at a checkpoint in Ilahun.

Wasiu, while narrating how the incident happened on Thursday, explained that the policemen stopped their motorcycle and demanded a bribe.

He said, “We met about four policemen at the checkpoint in Ilahun. One of them, who appeared drunk, approached us and demanded a bribe. When Ayomide brought out the amount the policeman demanded and was about to give him, the cop saw a bundle of N50,000 in my friend’s pocket.

“At that point, the policeman suddenly became aggressive. He approached us and hit Ayomide’s head with the butt of his rifle. The two of us fell from the motorcycle, while the three other policemen ran away. 

“Before I managed to stand up, the policeman who perpetrated the act was about to flee, but he was stopped by some passersby, who got to the scene. Ayomide was bleeding from the nose, mouth and ear after the attack.

“A police officer, who was not at the scene when the attack took place, came and directed that Ayomide should be rushed to hospital. The officer rushed him to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, in his private car.

“Ayomide is currently at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. “He is unconscious. He has not opened his eyes or talk since then. His mobile phone and the sum of N50,000 in his pocket were stolen.”

Corroborating Wasiu’s claims, the victim’s boss, Popoola Adebayo, said when he got to the scene, Ayomide was lying on the road and was drenched in blood.

Adebayo added that when they got to LAUTECH, Osogbo, and the doctor on duty asked them to deposit the sum of N50,000, the Divisional Police Officer, Ibokun Division, paid N30,000 out of the sum.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Yemisi Opalola, said she had not been briefed about the incident.

Ile-Arugbo: Court penalises Saraki family over absence to prosecute case

Kwara State High Court in Ilorin on Thursday penalised the Saraki family for their persistent absence to prosecute the case over ownership of the controversial “Ile-Arugbo” between the family and Kwara state government.

Following repeated failures of counsel to the claimant Asa Investment Limited, Akin Onigbinde, to appear before the court to fully prosecute its case, Justice Abiodun Adewara, in his ruling awarded a penalty of N200,000 each in favour of all the four defendants (Kwara State Governor, Attorney General, House of Assembly, and Bureau of Lands) and another N50,000 to the police on account of the failure of the claimant to allow the case to proceed to hear on various occasions.

Justice Adebara took the decision after the counsel to the claimant Akin Onigbinde again failed to attend the court session on Thursday.

Onigbinde, instead sent a letter, accompanied with a medical report, saying he was advised to undergo bed rest between 3rd and 10th of August, 2020. 

After many adjournments at the instance of the claimant, Onigbinde had again on July 8th agreed to an adjournment for July 22nd but he later said he could not make the sitting.

Salman Jawondo, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Kwara State who appeared for the government said the claimant was “deliberately wasting the time of the court” and urged Justice Adebara to dismiss the case for lack of diligent prosecution and to award N250,000 penalty each against the claimant and in favour of the defendants.

Jawondo, who insisted that Asa Limited was just buying time with the numerous adjournments, wondered why other counsel to the claimant cannot continue with the case in the absence of Onigbinde.

The Police, which is the fifth defendant in the case, aligned with the government’s position that the case should be struck out.

Justice Abiodun Adebara, however, adjourned the matter to 23rd and 24th of September to allow the claimant’s counsel to continue the case, warning that he would not grant any other adjournment after this.

The “Ile-Arugbo” owned by the late Kwara State political leader, Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki, became controversial and object of litigation December 2019 when the Kwara State government demolished the existing bungalow building on it with a view to construct a phase of government secretariat on it.

While the Sarakis opposed the action, the Kwara State Government claimed that the Saraki family did not pay and buy the controversial land from Kwara State government.

The Asa Investment Limited, which is purportedly owned by the late Olusola Saraki, had taken the Kwara State Government to court after the latter reclaimed the land which it said was unlawfully taken over by the firm without any right of occupancy or payment to the owner, the state government.

INEC launches portal for polling unit results. How to access it

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a dedicated public election result viewing portal, known as “The INEC Result Viewing (IReV)”.

The commission said IRev would enable Nigerians to view polling unit results in real time as voting ends on election day.

Mr Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, announced this on Thursday after a meeting held in Abuja.

Okoye said that the commission at the meeting, approved the introduction of a new step to further strengthen its election management process and enhance transparency of the system.

He disclosed that the innovation would begin from the Nasarawa Central State Constituency bye-election in Nasarawa State, holding on Saturday.

“To further strengthen the transparency in the election result management system, the commission has decided to introduce a dedicated public portal, IReV that will enable Nigerians to view polling unit results real time as the voting ends on election day.

“The commission wishes to emphasise that this does not constitute electronic collation of results.

“The collation of election results shall remain as provided for by law, a manual process of completion of relevant result sheets and their upwards collation until the final results are determined.

“This innovation will begin from the Nasarawa Central state constituency bye-election.

“Thereafter it will be extended to the Edo and Ondo State governorship elections as well as all subsequent elections.

“The commission hopes that this innovation will improve the transparency in election result management and therefore further consolidate public confidence in the electoral process,” he said.

Okoye said that the commission was aware that result management had remained a major source of mistrust in our electoral process.

“Citizens are often concerned, and sometimes rightly so, that results may not always be consistent with votes cast.

“INEC is determined to address any source of this concern through enhancing the level of transparency in the conduct of elections, more so in the process of releasing results of elections.

“It is a fundamental principle of democracy that in elections, votes are not only correctly counted, but that they also count,” he further said.

Okoye recalled that consistent with its commitment to transparency in election management, the commission introduced the Form EC60E, which was a poster version of the primary result sheet, the Form EC8A.

“This replica of the polling unit result is pasted at the polling units after votes are counted, recorded and announced.

“This poster, now widely known as the People’s Form EC8A, has increased transparency in result management.

“The form enables the citizens to photograph the results and project the outcome of elections, even before the final results are announced.

“Unfortunately, this has also led to abuses, as unofficial and at times false results are known to have been circulated, particularly via social media, causing tension and casting aspersions on the final outcome of elections,” he said.

He disclosed that for the Nasarawa Central state constituency election, the result sheet could be accessed by visiting https://inecelectionresults.com

“Click on Create new Account? Fill in your details in the form provided and click on Sign in and provide your State of origin and click on Continue”

“An account activation email is sent to the email address provided in the form.

” Check your email and correctly copy out the activation code which will be entered into the textbox provided on the portal.

” Then click on Activate. This logs you into the portal and you can select the Election which PU results you are interested in viewing,” he explained.

Okoye, who said that people could use the filter buttons to make the search easier, urged the public to remember to log out of the portal after use.

“The commission appeals to the public to make judicious use of this facility and looks forward to continuing to work with stakeholders to improve the quality of electoral services in our country,” he said.

New deadly virus surfaces in China

China, where the coronavirus was detected last December, is now facing a new health threat from another virus, that is tick-borne.

The virus causes a disease called “Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS).

According to reports, it has already killed seven people and infected at least 60, setting off alarm bells among health officials in the country.

Many of the cases reported were concentrated in East China’s Jiangsu and Anhui provinces, local media reported.

While more than 37 people were diagnosed with SFTS in Jiangsu in the early months of 2020, 23 were later found to be infected in Anhui.

While the disease is transferred to humans through tick bites, Chinese virologists have warned that human-to-human transmission of the virus cannot be ruled out.

Unlike SARS-CoV-2 however, this is not the first time the SFTS virus has infected people.

The recent spate of cases merely marks a re-emergence of the disease, IndianExpresss.com reports.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) belongs to the Bunyavirus family and is transmitted to humans through tick bites. The virus was first identified by a team of researchers in China over a decade ago. The first few cases were reported in rural areas of Hubei and Henan provinces in 2009.

The team of researchers identified the virus by examining blood samples obtained from a cluster of people exhibiting similar symptoms. According to a report by Nature, the virus killed at least 30 per cent of those infected.

The current case fatality rate rests between approximately 16 and 30 per cent, according to the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention.

Due to the rate at which it spreads and its high fatality rate, SFTS has been listed among the top 10 priority diseases blue print by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Virologists believe an Asian tick called Haemaphysalis longicornis is the primary vector, or carrier, of the virus. The disease is known to spread between March and November.

Researchers have found that the total number of infections generally peaks between April and July.

Farmers, hunters and pet owners are particularly vulnerable to the disease as they regularly come in contact with animals that may carry the Haemaphysalis longicornis tick.

Scientists have found that the virus is often transmitted to humans from animals like goats, cattle, deer and sheep.

Despite being infected by the virus, animals generally do not show any symptoms associated with SFTSV.

What are the symptoms of the SFTFS virus?

According to a study conducted by a team of Chinese researchers in 2011, the incubation period is anywhere between seven and 13 days after the onset of the illness.

Patients suffering from the disease usually experience a whole range of symptoms, including, fever, fatigue, chill, headache, lymphadenopathy, anorexia, nausea, myalgia, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, gingival hemorrhage, conjunctival congestion, and so on.

Some of the early warning signs of the disease include severe fever, thrombocytopenia or low platelet count and leukocytopenia, which is low white blood cell count.

The risk factors observed in more serious cases include multi-organ failure, hemorrhagic manifestation and the appearance of central nervous system (CNS) symptoms.

Gunmen kill couple, 2 others inside church, burn cars

 

Nigerian Police have begun a massive manhunt for unidentified gunmen, who stormed a church in the southern state of Bayelsa on Wednesday night, leaving a trail of blood and destruction.

The attackers, suspected to be cultists killed a couple and two worshippers in the church in Azikoro Village, near the capital of Yenagoa.

The rampaging hoodlums also burnt down the nearby house, church properties, cars and injured other worshippers before fleeing the scene of crime.

The motive was not clear. But two suspects have been arrested

But Bayelsa State Police Command said it has launched a manhunt for the gunmen as it also identified their victims.

They were Mr Gabriel Ejimofor 45 years old and his wife, 38 year-old wife Uchechukwu Ejimofor.

Also killed were Alfred Marcus, 30 years old and 25 year-old Imomotimi, whose surname is unknown.

In a press statement by SP Asinim Butswat,Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO of the

Bayelsa State Police Command said that Operatives of “Operation Puff Adder” had earlier traced the hideouts of the cultists in the bush, dislodged them and burnt their camp.

It was believed that this could be a reprisal attack by them.

The Commissioner of Police Mike Okoli visited the crime scene on Thursday.

He gave an assurance that his team would unravel the motive for dastardly attack.

NBC reported that the Golden Globe winner and the businessman are splitting up, after two years of dating and sometimes living together.

Garner, who shares three kids with ex-husband Ben Affleck, first sparked romance rumours with Miller in October 2018.

''Thank God I am back at my duty post! I returned to work yesterday, Wednesday, August 5, after several weeks away, battling the monstrous coronavirus.

It began with a feverish condition on Wednesday, July 1. I usually don’t joke with my health, so I stopped at a pharmacy on my way home, got an anti-malaria drug with some paracetamol and I used it as recommended.

I must state here that I have never completed a full dose of any malaria treatment or drug before getting back on my feet all my adult life; never! In fact, you would have to remind me sometimes before taking the drugs because I would have felt well after taking the second dose when in treatment. This time, I completed the malaria medicine, yet there was no improvement. By Thursday (July 2) evening and Friday (July 3) morning, my condition had started to deteriorate. The feelings gradually moved from headaches to severe body pains and cold. Same day, I had the responsibility to organise a media briefing for my boss. I didn’t raise the alarm just yet because everybody was wary of everyone else, especially if you showed any signs of illness. But the truth is I was sick; terribly sick. 

I told my wife on Thursday evening that there was a need for us to get tested for COVID-19. I convinced her that we needed to clear all doubts. She understood clearly, knowing it may not be out of place that I had been exposed to the virus, especially now that Lagos has been experiencing a rise in community spread.

We drove straight to the Yaba Infectious Diseases Hospital on Friday morning and in less than an hour, the very efficient Lagos health workers in charge of sample collection and testing had attended us to. 

Although he was not ill and showed none of the signs of COVID-19, I encouraged my driver to join us for the test. Thereafter we left for Marina to continue with the day’s official activities. While Mr. Governor was briefing and responding to questions from journalists, I stood there on the beautifully tendered State House lawn shaking from within. I could feel that my legs were wobbling from inside my bone marrow. Not even the beauty of the grass, which I usually admire, could calm the way I felt.

I remember how much I tried to keep more than two metres away from some colleagues who had come to me for some clarifications on issues or points raised by the governor. Since I was not sure of my status, I needed to take responsibility by ensuring that nothing was discharged into the atmosphere from my side. 

I waited till the end of the press conference, managed to move towards my boss but ensured that I didn’t move close to him. In that socially distanced position, I informed him of my state of health and his response was direct: “Have you gone for another test?” He asked because he had mandated his entire close aides to go for COVID-19 test on two or three occasions. He has also done the test repeatedly, just for everyone to feel safe around the office. I answered him in the affirmative, “Yes sir, I just did this morning. Results should be out on Sunday.” He then said I should go home for a couple of days. I thanked him and left the State House.

No sooner had I left the State House than the real symptoms started in fearful proportions. To be honest, I was scared. I had never felt that way before in my entire life. Driving from Marina to Ikeja felt like travelling from Lagos to New York. The vibrations and other bodily pains I experienced that day are difficult to describe here. I rolled from one end of the vehicle to the other. All I remember was my driver’s voice, saying “E pele sir (Sorry sir)”. It was excruciating! By the time we got home, my eyes had turned red, with the retina looking the other way. My wife took over immediately as the resident nurse. She was scared too but summoned the courage and took charge. She insisted we went to the hospital. We did. I told the doctor that I had gone for COVID-19 test but he said he would place me on another round of malaria treatment. 

 

I took some shots that evening, repeated them on Saturday morning and evening. I went again on Sunday morning but there was no remarkable improvement. By Sunday evening, our COVID-19 test results were sent to me via email. My worst fear stared at me in the face: We all tested positive for coronavirus – my wife, driver and I. I immediately called my driver to inform him. Clearly he was asymptomatic because as at that time and up till the time of writing this piece, he has had no symptoms. Life has been normal for him. Nonetheless, I insisted that he should self-isolate at home for 14 days and not go about infecting other people.

I duly informed my principal and then called my direct boss, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, the chief of staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who immediately made arrangements for my treatment. The doctors called in and asked that we isolate at home. They tutored me on all the protocols, most of which I was already familiar with, having been part of the communication team on Lagos State Government’s response to COVID-19.

Case management started and in two days, I had lost my sense of smell, taste and every symptom that comes with COVID-19 fully manifested in me. Trust me, it was not a particularly pleasant experience.

In eight to nine days of medication, the initial pains and discomfort started to disappear. I began to experience a new lease of life. My SPO2, which is a small device used in checking the flow of oxygen in a patient’s system was back to normal. My blood pressure was good and my body temperature returned to normal. This time, I could attend to work-related issues. I started working from home.

 

Recall that three of us tested positive and one was asymptomatic. My wife too showed some symptoms from Monday, July 5, so she was placed on the same medication. While I improved, her condition took a downward turn; her oxygen level got below the acceptable limit of 95! At first, it fluctuated between 90 and 94; sometimes it would hit 95, so I was hopeful. Her blood pressure was also irregular. The value was inconsistent; sometimes good, at another time bad. 

 

On Tuesday, July 14, her SPO2 went down to 88! That was when it dawned on everyone that she had to be evacuated to an isolation centre. She was taken to the Onikan Centre, where she received some of the best treatment that COVID-19 patients in the United States of America are looking for. I don’t get scared easily by anything or situation. This time, I was very scared. I thought the worst phase of my life had come when after three days of her admission, she had not responded well to the treatment. She neither called home nor picked her phone. Everyone was worried.

Thanks to the Lagos State government, the Ministry of Health, the health workers; doctors, nurses and drivers, among others who ensured that my wife, like all the other patients that were brought in under very terrible conditions, returned home with joy.

After spending five days, we started to connect again via video calls.

 

Since I was not in the isolation centre, the closest was when I took her birthday cake there for a symbolic celebration; I could only rely on her experience, which she described as wholesome.

 

I decided to touch on my wife’s experience to draw attention to the fact that people do not necessarily die of COVID-19. You lose people to complications from underlining ailments. Unknown to us, my wife had a silent case of pneumonia and had some blood clot related issues. And since she had not fallen sick, these conditions never manifested in any form. Everyone in the house appeared healthy and truly so until the COVID-19 incident.

 

It is very important to conduct comprehensive medical checks, even if it is once in a year. If we had known this earlier, perhaps our experience would have been less traumatic when COVID-19 came calling.

 

Without sounding immodest, Lagos is a model State in terms of the COVID-19 response in Africa. Special thanks to Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who built excess capacity in readiness for the pandemic. This has helped the State to manage the effects of the pandemic since it broke out. 

 

COVID-19 is not a hoax, it’s very real. Use your face mask, wash your hands regularly, use sanitisers and please keep to the social distance protocols.

Edo House of Assembly roof dismantled, mace taken down [Video]

Some men on Thursday vandalised the Edo State House of Assembly and removed its roof.

According to a video shared by Channels Television, the men were seen removing the iconic legislative mace on the top of the building.

The video also showed trucks offloading gravels at the entrance of the Assembly Complex while the men trooped into the building.

The Punch had earlier reported that policemen on Thursday surrounded the Assembly complex in Benin City, the state capital.

This is coming barely 24 hours after the Deputy Speaker, Yekini Idiaye, was impeached by the state lawmakers.

The member representing Orhionmwon-South constituency, Roland Asoro, has since been appointed deputy speaker and was immediately administered the oath of office and oath of allegiance by the Speaker.

It was gathered that police action was in a bid to prevent an attack on the complex.

Apart from many security officials that blocked entrance into the complex, patrol vehicles were also stationed there.

But no security operative was seen in the video shared by Channels Television.

National association of nurses disown nurses involved in sale of child, says they are not part of us

The Katsina State Council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has disowned and described the two suspected female nurses arrested by the police in the state as fake and imposters.

Identified as Misira Tijjani and Grace Ejigu of the Okmos Clinic in Kofar Kaura quarters, Katsina state, the two suspected female nurses were arrested on Monday by officers of the Katsina Police Command for alleged involvement and attempt to sell a newborn baby girl to one Eucharia Onyema.

The chairman of the Katsina state council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Haruna Mamman disclosed this on Wednesday in a press conference held at the State Secretariat of the state council.

Mamman told reporters that the association swung into action immediately to authenticate the identity, membership, and qualifications of the two suspects.

“We visited the hospital and interviewed both the proprietor of the hospital, Dr. E.E Eze. The two imposters in question and our findings revealed that they are fake and imposters

“The proprietor of the hospital and the two imposters, even admitted that they were not trained and qualified nurses.

“We complained to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in whose office and before everyone present, they confessed that they were not Nurses, whereas a day before, they told the police authority that they were nurses.

“We will pursue this matter to its logical conclusion, they will be prosecuted for impersonation and defamation of character,” Mamman added.

Hopeless romantic burns down flat during marriage proposal that went horribly wrong

A hapless fiance spelled out 'Marry Me?' in more than 100 candles for his girlfriend, but it soon turned to disaster when he burned down their flat.

Albert Ndreu spent two weeks meticulously planning his perfect proposal after buying a ring for Valerija Madevic.

The 26-year-old had decided to surprise his sweetheart by filling their living room with over candles and around 100 tealights and roughly 60 balloons.

Some of the lights he used to spell out 'Marry Me?' on the floor.

Albert then went out to pick up his love to bring her home for the surprise - but after he left the flat caught fire.

Three fire crews rushed to the scene at roughly 8.30pm after Valerija saw clouds of dark smoke emanating from their flat's door in Sheffield, Yorks.

But Albert was undeterred and got down on one knee in the charred room and asked the love of his life if she would marry him

With sirens wailing in the distance and their flat engulfed in flames, the love struck girlfriend said the all-important 'yes'.

The flat saw the studio flat gutted by flames or smoke damage.

Albert said: "I was planning the proposal for over two weeks - I kept struggling to find the right thing to do to mark the special moment.

"I wanted to do something from my heart even if it didn't go exactly as planned.

"Valerija always says the most important thing is the small gestures every day - but I wanted to do something special for the proposal.

"I bought the most important thing, which was the ring, and I just needed to make sure the day was perfect.

"It didn't go exactly as I thought it would but she said yes, so I think the day took an unexpected turn but ended up exactly how I wanted it to."

Albert spent over four hours preparing his romantic setting - two of which were spent blowing up the balloons and lighting up the candles.

The besotted waiter spelled out the words 'Marry Me?' with tea lights, had a bottle of Chianti waiting for them, and had a non-stop romance playlist playing on a speaker.

Of all the things that Albert worried could go wrong, he never expected to find his home left in ashes.

He said: "I put balloons and candles everywhere, I had to go all out.

"I wanted to say something like she was the light of my heart, but maybe that was too much light.

"I was so nervous, this was the first time I have ever proposed and I hope it will be the last.

"I was so worried about everything going wrong I never imagined I could set the house on fire.

"But it will always be an unforgettable day for us and a story which will be amazing to tell our children."

Albert and Valerija have been together for just over a year after meeting on a dating website.

They're not sure when it will be safe for them to return but said the most important thing was that they were together after the "most beautiful" day in their lives.

She said: "It's such a beautiful day, the most beautiful day in my life.

"You can replace things in the house, but not our love for each other.

"In the end we're in good health and we're together, and that's all that matters."

Notorious Star Boys gang members arrested in Lagos

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos State Police Command, have arrested five suspected members of a notorious gang known as Star Boys after an attack on a resident during a rival cult clash.

According to The Guardian, the suspects, Opeyemi Ayoola, Segun Oladokun, Oluwasegun Ajagun, Friday Aduadu and Jimoh Qudus, confessed to taking advantage of rival groups’ violent clashes to rob unsuspecting residents at Ijesha area of Lagos

It was also gathered that two of the suspects, Aduadu and Qudus, were security men of a hotel in the area, where the gang reportedly kept one of their guns. The suspects claimed that they do not use guns to fight, but use other weapons such as knives, machetes, planks, bottles, and axes during clashes.

Ayoola, a 19-year-old commercial motorcyclist, who admitted to being a member of the gang, said he was aware that some of his colleagues took advantage of the clash to rob residents, but denied ever robbing anybody in any of the clashes he took part in.

“It is true that I am a member of Star Boys cult and we use to fight with Itire Boys. They destroyed the windscreen of one of our tricycles and that led to the first clash between us. I have seen people robbing residents, but there was never a time I joined them to rob anybody. I only follow them to fight, because I derived joy in fighting.

“In fact, there was a time I helped someone in my area, who was about to be attacked by some of our boys. They attacked one Alfa and I told them that he was one of our elder brothers in the neighbourhood. I helped him to retrieve his stolen phone and other valuables,” Ayoola said.

Oladokun, who is a cobbler and a commercial tricycle operator, said: “I am the only authentic member of the Star Boys group, others are just using the name to cause trouble. We use the group to help one another in the area like a social club. I know some of our junior ones do fight with their counterparts in Itire, but I have never been part to it.

“I ride tricycle whenever I have nothing doing in my shop and it was Opeyemi that pointed me to the police as one of the leaders of Star Boys. Opeyemi and others are younger to us and there is no way we can belong to the same group.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects, said the police were on the trail of other members of the gang and their counterparts in Itire.

The police boss also warned gangsters in other parts of the state to desist from criminal activities, stating that the police force would not allow them hide under any name to cause lawlessness.

Over 400 ghost teachers uncovered in Benue state

The Benue state teaching service board says it has uncovered 433 ghost workers, including 18 dead persons, in its payroll.

Frank Kyungun, executive secretary of teaching service board, disclosed this on Wednesday while presenting the report of the screening exercise recently conducted by the board to Samuel Ortom, governor of the state.

He said the ghost workers were uncovered after verification of 4,473 staff across the three senatorial zones of the state.

“The screening uncovered 433 ghost workers on the payroll after verification of 4,473 staff across the three senatorial zones of the state,” Kyungun said.

“The screening committee also uncovered 18 dead persons, 70 retired staff, 193 redeployed staff, among other irregularities on the payroll, who were accordingly expunged,” he added.

Arsenal to sack 55 staff as Covid-19 hits revenues

Less than a week after winning the FA Cup to secure their place in next season's Europa League and as they negotiate a multi-million pound contract extension with striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal have announced plans to layoff 55 staff.

The club said that the cuts were the result of the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

The announcement sparked an immediate social media backlash from fans contrasting the huge sums involved with keeping key players to the lost jobs of staff at the north London outfit.

"Revenue from broadcasters, matchday and commercial activities have all been hit severely and these impacts will continue into at least the forthcoming 2020/21 season." the club said in a statement.

The club said they had done all they could to reduce costs, including players, senior staff and executive team members taking voluntary pay cuts, adding "but it is now clear that we must reduce our costs further to ensure we are operating in a sustainable and responsible way.

"We do not make these proposals lightly and have looked at every aspect of the club and our expenditure before reaching this point. We have also received significant financial support from our owners, Kroenke, Sports & Entertainment in terms of refinancing our stadium debt.

"These steps have all reduced the impact of the pandemic on the club and have helped us continue to maintain investment in the team. This will continue to be a key priority."

Nigerian nurses attack Olamide over ‘Wonma’ video

Nigerian rapper and singer, Olamide has been forced to bring down the video to his hit song, ‘Wonma’ when he got attacked by Nigerian nurses and lovers of the profession.

The YBNL rapper was dragged on social media over accusations that he portrayed nurses as s3xual objects in the video.

The music video which was released some days ago featured vixens dressed in nurse costumes engrossed in various explicit activities and moves while on duty.

Olamide later pulled down the video to the song he shared on his Instagram page but it was a little too late.

Nursing World Nigeria, An online outfit that connects Nigerian nurses, also released a statement on the issue:

Netflix star Daisy Coleman dies aged 23

Daisy Coleman, who starred in the Netflix documentary Audrie and Daisy, has died.

The 23-year-old’s mother, Melinda, confirmed the sad news on Tuesday, stating her daughter died by suicide.

She told TMZ: ‘She was my best friend and amazing daughter. I think she had to make make it seem like I could live without her. I can’t. I wish I could have taken the pain from her!’

Daisy was r.a.p.e.d at the age of 14 in 2012 at a house party in Missouri. No one was ever held responsible for the incident.

Melinda added: ‘She never recovered from what those boys did to her and it’s just not fair. My baby girl is gone.’

The youngster appeared in Netflix’s 2016 documentary which followed Daisy and her family as they dealt with the horrific ordeal.

The film also documented the s.e.x.ual assault case of Audrie Pott in 2012. Audrie tragically died by suicide 10 days after her ordeal.

Daisy tried to find good out of her past trauma and co-founded the organisation SafeBAE, which aims to end sexual assault among school students and provide help for the victims.

Following Daisy’s death, the organisation said they were heartbroken and had ‘suffered an irreplaceable loss’.

Just last year, Daisy’s family had suffered further tragedy after the death of her younger brother who was killed in a car accident.

Daisy tried hard to turn her life around after the r.a.p.e and attended Missouri Valley College.

Reflecting on the aftermath, Daisy told the Mail Online in 2017: ‘After my case went viral I took a break for a while, but during that time period I noticed a lot of other victims and survivors had come forward.

‘Seeing me doing it so publicly, I felt like that gave them a space to tell their own story and I was really inspired by that.’

Daisy explained how she ‘did not cope well’ after the incident and felt ‘very negative’ towards herself.

But she added: ‘I feel no resentment towards my attacker only because I have come to realise that he was only passing on some form of negativity to me which at some point was passed onto him so once I came to that realisation… that made me forgive him in a sense even though he never presented an apology.’
