Nigerian students give DSS Monday to free arrested #RevolutionNow protesters

The National Association of Nigerian Students, South-West Zone, has given the Department of State Services till Monday to release detained #RevolutionNow protesters.

The students condemned the arrest and brutalisation of the peaceful protesters in Osun, Lagos, Ogun, Abuja and demanded their release.

NANS, in a statement today, vowed to stage a demonstration if the demand was not met.

The statement was signed by the NANS Zone D Coordinator, Kowe Amos; Secretary-General, Giwa Temitope; and Public Relations Officer, Kazeem Israel.

“We find it disturbing that despite the fact that several international protocols guarantee human rights to protest, successive governments in Nigeria have not done enough in the aspect of respect for these rights.

“In Nigeria, dissent is criminalised. The ruling class aims to assume the position of the all-mighty; they do not want to be questioned,” NANS said.

According to the students’ body, the manner the affairs of the country is being managed is heart-wrenching.

It added, “The association having studied the demands of the protesters make bold to assert that they are legitimate, many of which we have also in our capacity as an association raised in a series of interventions since we came on board last year.

“Nigerians, especially in the North, are being killed like games by rising insurgency. Rate of poverty, hopelessness and unemployment is alarming. Education and health have been completely abandoned.

“Corruption has taken over the entire administration, with rising foreign debt profile capable of compromising the nation’s sovereignty. Respect for democratic ideals of freedom, human dignity, rights and rule of law has been thrown to the winds. The country has been subjected to the whims of jackboot absolutism.

“These are legitimate issues raised by the #RevolutionNow protesters. But, the posture of the Nigerian government towards issues has shown that they would rather empower/embrace sycophancy than agree with those with dissent because they are not ready to be held accountable which is why there is always a clampdown on protests.

“It is to this end that we demand that the government unconditionally frees the detained protesters.

“We warn that the leadership of the zone would be forced to mobilise students down to the barricades should the government fail to release the protesters at the latest Monday,” the statement concluded.

The group also lamented the increase in the pump price of fuel and the absence of palliatives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, wondering where the billions of donations and the recovered Abacha loot went to.

Yahoo boys to sweep UNILORIN department, secondary school for three months

Justice Sikiru Oyinloye of Kwara State High Court, Ilorin, has convicted and sentenced the duo of Akinola Opeyemi and Owolabi Olajide to three months of community service for internet fraud.

The spokesperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Dele Oyewale, who disclosed this in a statement said they are to sweep the Physics Department of the University of Ilorin and the premises of Saint Anthony Secondary School, Ilorin, for three months or pay N50,000 option of fine each.

Delivering his judgment, according to Oyewale, Justice Oyinloye said, “I have carefully considered the evidence before the court, the exhibits tendered and the uncontroverted testimony of the prosecution witness”

“This honourable court holds that the prosecution has proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, the defendants are hereby convicted as charged.”

Oyewale noted that in sentencing them to community service, the judge directed the Head of Physics Department, University of Ilorin and the Principal, Saint Anthony Secondary to issue an assessment letter on the convicts’ compliance with the judgment to the chief registrar of the Kwara State High Court, at the completion of their community service.

Poor level of compliance, the judge stated, would earn the convicts a direct six months imprisonment.

Trouble started for the convicts when in March 2020, the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Commission placed some areas of the city on surveillance, following intelligence on the activities of internet fraudsters in the municipality, and arrested the defendants and others as a result.

Analysis of iPhones and laptops recovered from the convicts yielded fraudulent email addresses and messages, which the convicts confessed to being theirs.

Ivanka Trump makes $4million in virtual fundraiser for her father's campaign

Ivanka Trump brought in $4 million dollars for her father's re-election campaign in her first virtual fundraiser this week that featured a surprise appearance from President Donald Trump.

The first daughter's return to the fundraising circuit comes as President Trump has lagged behind Democratic rival Joe Biden in fundraising, trailing him in second quarter totals.

Ivanka Trump appeared on the zoom call with Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, a source with knowledge of the fundraiser told DailyMail.

During the fundraiser, President Trump made a surprise phone call to Ivanka and spoke briefly to her and the more than 70 donors on the call.

The money from the fundraiser went to the Trump Victory fund - a joint fundraising committee benefiting the president's campaign, the RNC, and roughly two dozen state parties.

Ivanka Trump, who serves as an unpaid adviser in the White House, is the second highest requested fundraiser next to the president, according to the source.

Her $4 million haul tops the $1.7 million that Elizabeth Warren raised for Biden last Friday. But, in June, Warren brought in $6 million for Biden in his largest single-event to date.

With the election less than 100 days away, the competition is heating up and the pressure to fill the campaign coffers is building on both presidential candidates.

Biden beat President Trump in second quarter fundraising: $282 million to $266 million.

Biden's campaign also announced Wednesday night it raised $140 million in July.

But the joint Trump/GOP fundraising committee announced it raised $165 million in July, topping over $1 billion raised for the joint effort. July marked the largest online fundraising month ever for the re-election effort.

'The enthusiasm behind President Trump's re-election continues to grow as July's massive fundraising totals prove,' said Bill Stepien, Trump 2020 campaign manager, in a statement.

“However, the leadership of MFM hereby states as follows: MFM will not reopen all her regions, zones, branches and facilities in Lagos and Ogun states for now. Sniffing dogs to detect COVID-19 at Dubai airport

Coronavirus-sniffing dogs capable of detecting the infection with 92 percent accuracy have been recruited to vet travellers arriving in the United Arab Emirates at Dubai airport.

All travellers must be tested for COVID-19 prior to their trip before showing the confirmed negative result on arrival.

According to DailyMail UK, Dubai International Airport has now also introduced the use of police sniffer dogs who are capable of detecting coronavirus among passengers within minutes.

It comes as the UAE reported a total of 61,163 coronavirus cases and 351 deaths

Dubai’s Ministry of Interior in a statement stated that, “Data and studies showed that detection of presumed Covid-19 cases achieved approximately 92 per cent in overall accuracy.

“Figures indicate that dogs can quickly detect infected cases, help protect key sites, effectively deal with huge crowds and secure large events, airports, etc.”

The process begins with a sample of body odor being taken from a passenger’s armpit before it is placed inside a container in an isolated room.

The specially-trained dogs then sniff the samples through a funnel-like contraption and, if they detect coronavirus, the passenger is then directed to take the nasal PCR test.

The dogs never come in direct contact with the passengers.

Sniffer dogs have previously been used to detect several other diseases that can affect body odor such as cancer and malaria.

Last month researchers from Germany trained army sniffer dogs to distinguish between samples of fluids from patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and healthy donors.

Beautiful story of how premature baby gets cared for by same nurse who looked after his dad 34 years before

When baby Zayne Caldwell arrived eight weeks early, his parents Renata Freydin, 34, and David Caldwell, 33, were anxious about what lay ahead.

But their worries were soothed when they discovered Zayne was being cared for by NICU nurse Lissa McGowan, who had cared for the baby’s dad, David, 34 years before.

David had also been born premature at the same hospital, and fondly remembered his mum’s stories of ‘wonderful nurse Lissa’.

The parents only realised the same nurse was looking after their son when they dug an old family album out of storage, to see which parent the newborn resembled.

They couldn’t believe it when they saw a photo of Lissa cradling David – and took a matching photo with Zayne.

Their baby is now happy and healthy and at home – and this week Lissa retired from Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, after 39 years service.

Proud Renata, a nail technician from Edison, New Jersey, said: ‘The time was filled with worries and uncertainty, but we could breathe easy knowing his nurse is the same one that helped David.

‘She was amazing and to have her care for Zayne was amazing.

‘We couldn’t believe it when we found out.

‘There was a photo of Lissa holding David.

‘I was like “wait a minute”. I had only met her two days earlier. I got chills.

‘I knew it was her right away and I ran to show David and didn’t even have to say anything – he saw it was her straight away too.

‘His mother had loved her to much, she wanted to take a picture of the two of them before she left.’

When the parents took the photo in to show Lissa, she was overjoyed.

They think the coincidence was a sign David’s late mum Ida was watching over them.

Renata added: ‘Lissa was so kind and not just to baby, but to us as well.

‘No question was too much – and she often answered them before we had even asked.

‘It was very emotional. David was thinking it was a sign his mum was saying “everything will be ok” – and it was.’

Zlatan Ibrahimovic pictured working out aboard a yacht

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been spotted on holiday enjoying the sun near the French resort of Saint-Tropez ahead of his return to AC Milan next season.

The Swedish maestro was pictured alongside his partner Helena Seger and their two sons Maximilian and Vincent.

Despite being on holiday, Ibrahimovic was seen working out on his luxurious yacht just off the coast - performing plank variations, press-up routines and utilising TRX bands.

Using the yacht's fitness equipment, the 38-year-old took the opportunity to maintain his strength inbetween sunbathing sessions.

Alongside working out, Ibrahimovic topped up his tan and frolicked in the sea with his family.

The AC Man front-man was seen performing flips off the back of his yacht in a pair of camouflage swimming trunks before rinsing off in the shower on board the boat.

Ibrahimovic boasted a gym-honed physique as he strutted around the boat topless in the sun.

Working out on holiday seems somewhat of a necessity for Ibrahimovic, who is reportedly set to double his wages with a new contract that will keep him at AC Milan until he is 40 years old.

Ibrahimovic rejoined Milan in January on a short-term deal but has since been linked with a move to Premier League new boys Leeds.

However, it is likely that Ibrahimovic will now stay in Italy after a new £104,000-a-week deal has been put on the table.

Having scored 10 goals in 19 appearances since his return, Milan are keen to lock the forward down.

Despite his age, Ibrahimovic has shown no signs of slowing down and appears determined to carry on making a significant impact for Milan.

NLC gives Air peace, Bristow helicopters 14 days to recall sacked pilots

The Nigeria Labour Congress has condemned and rejected the sack of 100 Pilots by Air Peace and 69 Pilots by Bristow Helicopters.

The union also condemned the sack of the executives of National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) working with Turkish Air.

The NLC said the sack of the workers by the airlines was highly insensitive, callous, and unjust.

In a statement by President of the NLC, Ayubba Wabba, the union gave the airlines two weeks to recall the sacked workers or face industrial unrest.

The NLC vowed to fight for the reinstatement of the sacked workers and for workers’ unionisation in Air Peace.

“We call on the management of Turkish Air, Air Peace and Bristow Helicopters to reinstate all the sacked workers within two weeks.

“As agreed between labour and Employers’ Association, social dialogue should be used to resolve industrial concerns instead of the current resort to unilateralism.

“We will not hesitate to mobilise the weight of the entire Nigerian workforce to the premises of Turkish Air, Air Peace and Bristow Helicopters if our demands are not met,” the statement said.

Occultists storm Edo State House of Assembly, rain curses on Obaseki opponents

The battle for the control of the Edo State House of Assembly has taken a melodramatic turn as a voodoo priestess and spiritual leader of Ekutetebite Negwogho group, Princess lnibokun lmasemwenbor stormed the complex to curse opponents of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Accompanied by fellow occultists, the priestesses said they represented the female members of traditional worship centres in the Benin Kingdom.

Chanting incantations, Priestess lmasemwenbor who said she inherited her symbol of authority as an occultist from her grandfather, boasted that whatever she pronounced on anyone will come to past.

She spoke at the Assembly gate in downtown Ring Road: “I was at home when I saw on television the crisis at the Edo Assembly. I heard that some people from other ethnic groups are trying to turn Benin upside down. We Benin people don’t like what they are doing.

“APC is oppressing Obaseki. Why I am interested in the matter is that we did not have an access road to my community before Obaseki became governor. We used to spend so much to come to Benin. But now, we can travel in and out of our community. We don’t suffer from erosion anymore.

“For that reason, I must support Obaseki for a second term. Whoever says he will turn the state upside down to rig the election, let the heads of our ancestors torment him.

“Obaseki is a peacemaker, he gave us amenities of life and for that reason, I have to back him up with my strength.”

Princess lmasemwenbor predicted that the governor who is presently running on the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will be re-elected for another four years.

She warned: “Nobody will grab it from him and whoever says he will turn the state upside down to subvert the wishes of the people, help us tell him that the head of our ancestors will torment the person. All the deities of the Benin kingdom will torment him or her.”

We won't open our churches until plague is over - Sam Adeyemi

Daystar Christian Centre won’t reopen on Sunday despite the go-ahead to that effect by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, its Senior Pastors Sam and Nike Adeyemi have stated.

Rather, it would continue to meet online until physical congregation becomes safe, they added.

This was contained in a statement titled, ‘Update on resumption of physical services’.

The Adeyemis, who co-founded the church in 1995, said they would continue to hold online services until it is safe to reopen their expansive auditorium located in the Oregun area of the state.

The statement reads: “We are aware of the Lagos State Government’s announcement that churches can resume physical services from 9th August 2020.

“We thank God for the progress made so far by the federal and state governments, the NCDC and our frontline health workers. However, the leadership of Daystar Christian Centre has resolved NOT to open her worship centres for physical gathering on the immediate.

“Daystar Christian Centre will continue to hold her services online exclusively pending further review.

“We look forward to the resumption of physical services in a safe environment. We urge our members and friends to join us on all our online platforms for life-transforming services.

“God’s mercy that has preserved us thus far will cause this plague to pass over our families, nations and planet in Jesus’ name. Amen!”

Chicago rapper FBG Dog may have been shot dead in retaliation for mocking dead rival gang members in rap video

Police investigating a drive-by shooting that killed Chicago rapper FBG Duck are trying to determine whether he was targeted for mocking deceased rival gang members in a recently released music video.

The 26-year-old artist, born Carlton Weekly, was shot dead in broad daylight in the high-end Gold Coast section of Chicago while shopping in boutiques with two friends, who were also injured in the attack.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said that the assailants were able to track down Weekly because he had been livestreaming his travels through the city.

Chicago Tribune reported, citing unnamed sources, that Weekly was a member of a Gangster Disciples faction.

As evidenced by the initials 'FBG' in his stage name, Weekly was also part of the Fly Boy Gang, also known as Clout Boyz, which is a rap group from the South Side of Chicago affiliated with the Gangster Disciples.

Three weeks ago, Weekly released a music video for his song 'Dead B***hes,' in which he made what police have characterized as 'derogatory statements' about members of the rival Black Disciples gang who have died.

Specifically, one section of the expletive-laden video includes the lyrics: 'Said I wasn't gon' diss the dead and okay, I did it. But n****, f*** T-Roy and Odee, them dead b***hes.'

The name 'Odee' in the song refers to Odee Perry, a 20-year-old member of the Black Disciples who was shot dead in 2011, just months after the killing of Gangster Disciples member Shondale 'Tooka' Gregory, 15.

Gregory was close friends with Gakirah Barnes, then aged 13, who later became known as one of the most notorious female gang members in US history.

Barnes, who was believed to have murdered as many as 20 people before being shot dead at age 17 in 2014, was linked to Perry's killing but was never charged with the crime.

The Black Disciples gang later named one of its factions O-Block after Odee Perry, and their rivals dubbed a faction of Gangster Disciples 'Tookvaille' in Gregory's honor.

Weekly, who was in his teens when Perry and Gregory were killed nearly a decade ago, would later join the Tookaville faction.

Nigeria’s north west governors want to negotiate with bandits

Governors in Nigeria’s north west are considering reconciliation with bandits to end the security challenges facing the region.

The suggestion was made by Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, during a visit to his counterpart in Zamfara, Bello Matawalle.

It comes amid reports that Al Qaeda and ISIS elements are operating in the region.

Banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling in Katsina, Zamfara and Sokoto States have taken a disturbing dimension in recent times.

Governor Matawalle first experimented with it and he said it was yielding positive results.

The Katsina governor Aminu Masari also tried a policy of rapprochement with the bandits and kidnapper, but the results have been mixed.

Killings and kidnapping have continued in the state.

In Kaduna, one of the major challenges, is the incessant killings in southern Kaduna and clashes between the sedentary population and peripatetic herdsmen.

On Thursday, the Northern Governors Forum condemned yet another attack on Wednesday, in which about 22 persons were reportedly killed.

Chairman of the Forum, Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau via a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Makut Macham, described the attack as unfortunate.

He expressed concern that the yet to be arrested gunmen, attacked four Atyap villages in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Lalong expressed worry that the attacks on the villages were persistent in spite all efforts by the Kaduna State Government and security agencies to end the violence.

He said the attacks in the villages showed the desperate attempt by criminal elements to not only cause pain and sorrow among innocent citizens, but also frustrate the efforts of the Kaduna State Government at fostering peace and harmony.

“We are deeply saddened by this cycle of violence and blood-letting that is carried out against unarmed and helpless people. This is reprehensible and regrettable.

” While we call on the security agencies to rise up to the occasion and apprehend these criminals, we also encourage the citizens to assist with relevant intelligence that will lead to the arrest of these blood thirsty people,” he said.

Drivers flee as petrol tanker kills one in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified woman lost her life on Friday when a tanker crashed around the Nigerian Army Signal Barracks in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.
A yet-to-be-identified woman lost her life on Friday when a tanker crashed around the Nigerian Army Signal Barracks in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.

The tanker driver was said to be conveying 55,000 litres of petrol to a destination in the state when he rammed into a pothole around 12.30 am and lost control of the vehicle in the process.

It was learnt that the tanker fell to the ground and trapped the female victim.

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the driver and his assistant fled from the scene of the crash, adding that the impact of the accident killed the female victim.

Oke-Osanyintolu said, “Upon the arrival of LASEMA Response Team at the scene, it was discovered that a tanker with number plate KSF 260 XY loaded with 55,000 litres of petrol, rammed into a pothole directly in front of the Nigerian Army Signal Barracks in Mile Two and fell sideways, resulting in its contents spilling out onto the road.

“Further investigation revealed that the driver and his assistant immediately fled the scene. An unidentified female adult who was seated beside the tanker drivers was trapped in the impact and lost her life. Her remains were pinned to dashboard from the impact of the accident on the tanker’s head.

“The Agency’s heavy-duty equipment is en route to the scene in order to recover the tanker together with its contents. Transloading of the contents is on hold until the ownership of the tanker and/or product can be determined.

“The LRU firefighters and the Lagos State Fire Service and the Nigerian Army are on standby to prevent any potential secondary incident. The operation is ongoing, further updates will be communicated.”

Your car gifts to Judges wasn't necessary, APC tells Wike

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has expressed reservation and concern over what it called needless donation of operational vehicles to serving Judges at a time of massive unemployment and retirees unpaid their gratuities.

The party said that across the country, sharp criticisms are trailing the Rivers State Government over its action.

APC in a press statement signed by its Spokeman, Ogbonna Nwuke, a former member of House of Representative and ex- Commissioner for Information explained that it had nothing against the Judiciary or Judges who are beneficiaries of car gifts.

“We are nonetheless appalled by the unnecessary and uncharitable remarks credited to the Rivers Governor and also worried by the nature of the condescending lecture that Governor Nyesom Wike presented to the Judiciary at the occasion. Rather than concentrating on the assignment of presenting vehicles to deserving judges, the Governor spent valuable time soliciting.

APC wondered: “What kind of cooperation was Governor Wike sueing for in his rigorous speech? Is it necessary for a man who has presented gifts to another to recount in public, how much he has done for a beneficiary? Such an antic which allows one to act as a Town Crier when showering gifts on another is completely non-African.”

APC accuses Wike of having started spinning a dangerous web which would form the political template for 2023.

The party challenges the Governor to explain his motive for seeking collaboration and understanding on the part of the Judges now that he has fulfilled what he described as his promise.

APC regretted that “Interestingly, there are teeming youths who should be put to work throughinvestments which have the tendency of stimulating the State’s comatose economy. Surprisingly, the administration has failed to listen. Thousands of Civil servants have retired from the service. Yet, it pleases the Government to use the services of retirees under a contract that enables them to serve as Permanent Secretaries, while vacancies which have created avenues for employment are not filled.

“Thousands of retirees have had no access to the payment of their pensions and gratuities. The records show that these men and women who served the State diligently have been left to die while their families and other dependants suffer. Yet, it would appear from the body language of the Governor, that the Rivers State Government does not care about the welfare of these senior citizens.”

The party also regrets the helplessness the EFCC as there exists a perpetual injunction which debars them from investigating financial dealings of the Rivers State Government.

APC urged the Judiciary not to be swayed by the dummy of friendship that is being sold to them, saying ”It is fake. In the interim, we urge the Federal Government to enforce the first line charge for both the State Judiciary and the State Legislative in order to put an end to endless manipulations by those who exercise executive power.“

‘Hydroxychloroquine’ Doctor Stella Immanuel speaks again

Dr. Stella Immanuel, the woman who took the world by storm last month when she claimed that Hydroxychloroquine is the potential cure for Coronavirus, is in the news again. This time, she said God had called her to usher His life-giving presence and bring hope to a terrified world.

Immanuel had claimed that antimalarial drug, hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and antibacterial drug, Zithromax, were effective cures for the coronavirus.

She dismissed experts’ warning that hydroxychloroquine could cause serious heart problems for coronavirus patients, citing her experience with the use of the drug.

She said she had successfully treated no fewer than 350 patients with hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and Zithromax. Hydroxychloroquine, long touted by President Donald Trump as the cure for the virus, according to her.

But her testimony has been dismissed as politically motivated.

Immanuel had been silent since then, but on Friday, she was heard again as she tweeted in defense of her assertion, but this time, she went spiritual.

According to her, God had called her to usher His life-giving presence and bring hope to a terrified world.

She said the enemy would soon be defeated and the world would be liberated from the shackles of Coronavirus.

“God has called me in this season to usher in His life giving presence and bring hope to a terrified world. God has had mercy on us.

”He will turn things around soon and the enemy will be defeated. Soon! May our hearts be filled with hope in Jesus name,” she tweeted.
