At least 29 killed in monsoon-triggered India landslide

At least 29 bodies have been recovered after a massive landslide triggered by monsoon rains swept away dozens of tea estate workers in southwestern India, police said Sunday.

The landslide in Idukki district, around 250 kilometres (155 miles) from Kerala state’s capital Thiruvananthapuram, occurred Friday but the ongoing search and rescue efforts have been hampered by torrential downpours.

“By yesterday evening, we had taken out 26 dead bodies. We have taken out three more today,” a district police official told AFP.

Local media reported that some 78 people were believed to live in the area, with many still missing.

Kerala has been hit by deadly floods during the annual monsoon.

At least 18 people died in a passenger jet crash in Kerala on Friday when an Air India Express jet overshot the runway while trying to land in a storm and plunged down a bank.

The monsoon across South Asia is critical to replenishing rivers and groundwater, but also causes widespread death and destruction.

More than 300 people have died in floods and landslides in eastern and northeastern India, Bangladesh and Nepal in recent weeks.

You collaborated with Kashamu at some point! Fayose slams Obasanjo over condolence message

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has criticised former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, over his comment on Buruji Kashamu‘s death.

Obasanjo on Saturday condoled with the Ogun State Government over the demise of the businessman.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson Kehinde Akinyemi, Mr Obasanjo said while Mr Kashamu’s death was “sad, his life and history left lessons for those of us on this side of the veil.”

“Senator Buruji Kashamu in his lifetime used the maneuver of law and politics to escape from facing justice on alleged criminal offences in Nigeria and outside Nigeria,” Mr Obasanjo said.

Reacting to the statement, Mr Fayose, in his condolence message posted on Twitter, condemned the former president’s comment, saying it is regrettable.

“I also condemn the statement made by former President Obasanjo on his (Kashamu) death.

It is regrettable that Obasanjo could say what he said about Buruji Kashamu after his death and when he can no longer question him. Why didn’t he say that when Kashamu was alive?” he said.

He further asked if Mr Obasanjo “can say in good conscience that he did not at some point collaborated with Kashamu and most of the things he (Kashamu) did politically were not with his collaboration?”

Nollywood now cover-up industry for prostitutes – Actor Yemi Solade

Veteran actor, Yemi Solade, said the Nigerian movie industry, known as Nollywood, is presently a cover-up industry for internet fraudsters and prostitutes.

The 60-year-old actor made the comment in an interview with NigerianTribune when asked if he was pleased with the state of the Nigerian movie industry presently.

He said: “The Nollywood is not there right now. The Nollywood you see now is all-encompassing. It’s like an uncompleted building that is not guarded and what you meet there would amaze you. It has become an all-comers affair, anybody can stroll in and act. All the Yahoo boy are now there, all the prostitutes that you can imagine are there.

“People cannot even differentiate between the core professionals and these class of clowns who have infiltrated the association, but they didn’t just fly in, some people whom you refer to as core professionals brought them in.

“It’s just so porous that anybody can become an actor, the entry point is so porous and annoying. It’s a profession and it must be handled and treated as one. I am not really pleased with the state of the industry. It’s a professional body and we must portray ourselves as one that has mastered the art and craft of the profession.

When asked if there are plans in the industry for the aged, he said: “I am not in any professional body or administration to know what they are planning, but I will tell you that in any professional body, they should, as a matter of fact, have plans for their aged members. Little wonder we have some social media influencers raising donations for some actors on social media platforms, for people to help raise funds for them. If there were insurance schemes, and plans in place for the aged, or members of the industry, they won’t run to the social media to raise alms for their failing health conditions. So I don’t think there is anything like that. There is too much show, and we don’t need that, we send wrong signals to the world, we are giving the world a different impression about us, people see the few ones who are living large on social media platforms, you see them, everyone celebrating their material possessions, and if somebody falls sick and start asking for a donation, you start wondering that these people have money. So we need to do things right and set a good mark for others to follow.”

Backpacker not knowing she was 9 months pregnant gives birth while travelling on a motorway

A British backpacker had the shock of her life when she gave birth to a tiny newborn baby while travelling on a motorway.

Abi was on a bus from Brisbane to Fraser Island when she stopped to get painkillers in Noosa for what she thought was period pain.

The pain escalated quickly and paramedics realised she was about to give birth, despite showing no signs of pregnancy.

On the way to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a critical care paramedic with emergency labour experience joined the team and helped deliver the 1.7kg baby in the ambulance.

Advanced Care Paramedic Joanna Cairns said the whole thing was one constant surprise for the team as Harry was born in his amniotic sack.

'Luckily my partner had already seen one of those births as she had a lot of experience, but because Abi didn't know she was pregnant we didn't know if Harry was a full-term baby.'

The father Sam was travelling with his brother in Sydney and was able to get a flight to be with his new bub within five hours.

Over the next few weeks, hospital staff were able to determine Harry was close to full term due to his feeding habits and other milestones.

Ms Cairns said the new parents were able to stay with a family friend in Brisbane who was a midwife which 'was absolutely amazing,' they also received help finding baby supplies.

Harry received an Australian birth certificate but had to wait for his visa and passport before the family could travel home. They arrived back in the U.K. in August.

Ms Cairns described the experience as a once in a lifetime opportunity and 'one of the best days of my lives that we were absolutely blessed to be a part of.'

Kashamu escaped justice, but couldn’t beat death - Obasanjo

A former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has commiserated with the people of Ogun State over the death of Buruji Kashamu, who died of Coronavirus complications yesterday.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo said while Kashamu’s death was “sad”, his life and history left “lessons for those of all us on this side of the veil”.

He said, “Senator Buruji Kashamu in his lifetime used the maneuver of law and politics to escape from facing justice on alleged criminal offence in Nigeria and outside Nigeria.

“But no legal, political, cultural, social, or even medical maneuver could stop the cold hand of death when the Creator of all of us decides that the time is up.

“May Allah forgive his sin and accept his soul into Aljanah, and may God grant his family and friends fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

2 brothers, the Osujis kidnap younger brother for N7m ransom from granddad

Two brothers Lucky Osuji 25 and Reward Osuji 17 from Emekuku Owerri North local government area of Imo State, conspired with members of Black Axe Fraternity, a cult group and kidnapped their younger brother, Confidence, who is 14 years old.

Along with their collaborators, the brothers threatened to kill Confidence for rituals if their grandfather failed to give them N7million.

The grandfather, Chief Chukwuna Osuji, village Prime Minister worried by the threat, was said to have reported the matter promptly to the Police.

The police advised him not to pay any money.

However, the old man went ahead, negotiated with the kidnappers. He got the ransom reduced to N1millon.

According to the police, Chief Osuji dropped the cash at the criminals hideout at Upe, Ngor Okpala.

After that, the kidnapped grandson was released.

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State, Isaac Akimmoyede, said after Osuji reported the kidnapping, he mobilised the Anti-Kidnapping Squad Commander,Linus Nwaiwu and his team to action.

After days of detailed observation and investigation, they swooped on the location of the kidnappers, in Upe in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State.

Bernard Ugo, one of the criminals was arrested.

On interrogation, he confessed that the two brothers, Lucky and Reward were accomplices,

The police arrested the brothers.

Further investigation revealed more gang members were involved in the crime.

Two days later Okechukwu Nwachuku, 22 whose home was used as the spot for the ransom collection was arrested.

His arrest led to the arrest of the remaining members of the gang, Apollo Jeffrey 22, Iregbu Akachuku 30, the Police Commissioner said.

Lucky Osuji was said to be a graduate of a tertiary institution waiting for his call up letter for the National Youth Service Corps NYSC.

His brother, who was arrested with him, had finished his Senior Secondary School Programme and he was awaiting admission into the University.

Lucky, while giving his account of his role said his father, Elvis Osuji and mother, Blessing Osuji, both died in 2009, leaving him and brothers as orphans.

Since his parents died, he and his siblings have been living with his grandparents.

According to him, he was the mastermind of the kidnapping, an act which he confessed he had planned since 2017.

He needed his immediate younger brother’s consent to join him in the plan which the brother agreed.

He then contracted 5 members of his gang to execute the plan.

On June 10,2020, he gave the victim N200 to wait for them at the junction saying they were going out to buy something which was a lie as he already organized his friends to kidnap his brother.

Before the brother got to the junction, the gang members kidnapped him.

He said that when the matter was reported to their grandfather, Lucky feigned ignorance and helped his grandfather to look for his brother.

The suspect said when his gang members asked his grandpa to pay N7million, the grandpa pleaded with them and paid N1million out of which he received N450,000

He added that his grandfather was good to them, but their desire to open a barbing salon was the reason they kidnapped their brother in order to raise money for the business and begged their grandfather to forgive them.

Twitter, TikTok consider merger

Twitter is in preliminary discussions for a possible combination with TikTok
Twitter is in preliminary discussions for a possible combination with TikTok, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, after US President Donald Trump said he would ban the app, calling it a threat to national security.

Trump declared on Thursday that the popular Chinese video app TikTok and social network WeChat “threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.”

In an executive order, Trump gave Americans 45 days to stop doing business with the platforms, effectively setting a deadline for a sale of TikTok by its Chinese parent firm ByteDance.

He has also demanded that a significant portion of the sale go to the US Treasury.

Microsoft has been the primary suitor for TikTok, saying it was in talks to buy the company’s US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand operations.

The Financial Times reported on Thursday that Microsoft has expanded negotiations and was now after the app’s entire global operations.

As a smaller company, Twitter would have a long-shot bid for TikTok, but the social media platform believes it would come under less antitrust scrutiny than larger corporations such as Microsoft, the WSJ said, citing people familiar with the talks.

Twitter, however, would likely need the support of other investors to complete the combination.

While Twitter does allow for the sharing of videos, most posts contain short text messages and photos or GIFs.

In 2012 Twitter acquired the platform Vine, which allowed users to share short videos, but shut down the service in 2016.

Nigerian students give DSS Monday to free arrested #RevolutionNow protesters

The National Association of Nigerian Students, South-West Zone, has given the Department of State Services till Monday to release detained #RevolutionNow protesters.

The students condemned the arrest and brutalisation of the peaceful protesters in Osun, Lagos, Ogun, Abuja and demanded their release.

NANS, in a statement today, vowed to stage a demonstration if the demand was not met.

The statement was signed by the NANS Zone D Coordinator, Kowe Amos; Secretary-General, Giwa Temitope; and Public Relations Officer, Kazeem Israel.

“We find it disturbing that despite the fact that several international protocols guarantee human rights to protest, successive governments in Nigeria have not done enough in the aspect of respect for these rights.

“In Nigeria, dissent is criminalised. The ruling class aims to assume the position of the all-mighty; they do not want to be questioned,” NANS said.

According to the students’ body, the manner the affairs of the country is being managed is heart-wrenching.

It added, “The association having studied the demands of the protesters make bold to assert that they are legitimate, many of which we have also in our capacity as an association raised in a series of interventions since we came on board last year.

“Nigerians, especially in the North, are being killed like games by rising insurgency. Rate of poverty, hopelessness and unemployment is alarming. Education and health have been completely abandoned.

“Corruption has taken over the entire administration, with rising foreign debt profile capable of compromising the nation’s sovereignty. Respect for democratic ideals of freedom, human dignity, rights and rule of law has been thrown to the winds. The country has been subjected to the whims of jackboot absolutism.

“These are legitimate issues raised by the #RevolutionNow protesters. But, the posture of the Nigerian government towards issues has shown that they would rather empower/embrace sycophancy than agree with those with dissent because they are not ready to be held accountable which is why there is always a clampdown on protests.

“It is to this end that we demand that the government unconditionally frees the detained protesters.

“We warn that the leadership of the zone would be forced to mobilise students down to the barricades should the government fail to release the protesters at the latest Monday,” the statement concluded.

The group also lamented the increase in the pump price of fuel and the absence of palliatives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, wondering where the billions of donations and the recovered Abacha loot went to.
