Canadian citizen sentenced to death in China over drugs

A Canadian citizen has been sentenced to death in China on charges related to ketamine.

Xu Weihong, 45, was convicted of producing the drug in October 2016 by the Intermediate People's Court of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province.

The court said Xu had purchased raw ingredients and tools and produced 120kg of ketamine in a house belonging to a Chinese accomplice. The pair stored the drugs in Xu's home in the Haizhu District of Guangzhou.

He was sentenced to life in prison but now, almost four years after the conviction, his sentence has been changed to the death penalty, a statement announced.

It's unknown if he intends to appeal his sentence.

The news comes as diplomatic relations between China and Canada become increasingly tense.

Love at Oyo Isolation centre! Discharged patient ignores father, goes home with soldier

There was a mild drama at the Oyo state Infectious Disease Centre on Saturday when a young woman refused to follow her father home after she was discharged from the isolation centre.

The graduate of statistics from a school in the state was among the 20 people discharged from the centre after they were treated for Covid-19.

When TheCable visited the isolation centre, which is located in Olodo area of Ibadan, relatives of those who were to be discharged were outside the gate waiting anxiously for their loved ones.

An official of the centre, who preferred anonymity, told TheCable that the patients were allowed to go home after testing negative for the coronavirus.

“They were here for different duration of time. Some of them had spent more than four weeks at the centre receiving treatment. They were discharged after our medical team confirmed that they had tested negative for the virus,” he said.

Among those waiting for their loved ones was a pastor who is the father of the young woman.

He told TheCable that his daughter began exhibiting a wayward attitude after graduating from school.

“She is my second child but after her graduation from the school of statistics, she refused to come home. I only got to know that she had been isolated at the centre through a relative she confided in. I am a man of God and I will continue to pray for her,” he said.

The drama began after the young woman opted to follow a soldier who came to pick her with a motorcycle.

The father approached the soldier but after about five minutes of discussion, the lady was taken away on the motorcycle while her father left the centre in annoyance.

TheCable gathered that the soldier was admitted to the isolation centre, but got discharged after recovering from the disease.

“The soldier the girl followed home was one of the three soldiers at the isolation centre when the girl was on admission,” a discharged patient who did not want to be named told TheCable.

“Before the soldier was discharged, he and the girl were very close. They mingled together.”

Among those discharged were aged men and women, and a student of the University of Ibadan.

Some of the discharged patients told TheCable that they were happy to reunite with their families after receiving a clean bill of health.

Tanker drivers to commence strike in Lagos

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has said that the planned strike by Petroleum Tanker Drivers in Lagos would start on Monday as its meeting with Lagos State Government ended in deadlock.

The South-West Chairman of NUPENG, Mr Tayo Aboyeji, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday.

Aboyeji said the issues which forced the drivers to initiate an indefinite strike was not addressed during the four-hour meeting with officials of Lagos State Government on Sunday.

“They only promised to get back to us after we have told them what we want to avert the strike.

“Now, our stand still remains that they should address the issues of extortion and harassment of our members by security agents.

“Security agents and hoodlums are extorting our members and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management use taser on our drivers and this can kill.

“Since they are not ready to address these issues, we will start the strike on Monday morning until they are able to resolve them.

“It is unfortunate that the strike might affect all other states in the federation because most of them load their petroleum products in Lagos depots.

“We are not happy to disrupt fuel supply because we know the effect but we cannot continue to cope with the problems,” he said.

Aboyeji said that members of PTD were now accusing NUPENG of taking side with security agents to molest and assault drivers on Lagos roads.

NAN reports that the National President of the NUPENG, Mr Williams Akporeha, had in a statement on Friday directed tanker drivers to begin the withdrawal of their services as from 12:midnight on Monday.

Well it seems so... Nicola Peltz has hinted that she's already tied the knot with fiancé Brooklyn Beckham in a cryptic ring snap on Instagram.

The model, 25, said "yes" to Victoria and David's eldest son just last month, but after she shared a snap of Brooklyn's gold ring that resembled a wedding band, it seems as though she teased that she's already a Mrs.

The lovebirds spent lockdown together at Nicola's family mansion in the States before Brooklyn decided to ask her to be his wife.

Ogun pastor impregnates two siblings during spiritual cleansing

The founder and General Overseer of the Church of the Lord, Olomore, Abeokuta, Prophet Ebenezer Ajigbotoluwa, has been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly defiling and impregnating two underage female siblings in his church.

The suspect was reported to have procured abortions for the victims (aged 16 and 13) who followed their mother to the church over a spiritual attack.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.

Oyeyemi noted that the suspect was arrested after the victims’ mother reported to the police.

He said the woman complained at the Lafenwa Police Station that she fell sick sometime in 2018 and was taken to the church for spiritual healing.

According to the PPRO, the mother stated further that the pastor took advantage of her sickness and asked her entire family of six to move onto the church premises to avoid being afflicted with the same sickness.

“There and then, the prophet started having sex with her daughters, aged 16 and 13, unknown to her.

“The pastor impregnated the two underage girls and went on to procure abortion for them in a private clinic.

“Aside from this, the prophet also defrauded the family of N2m cash, which he took for what he called spiritual cleansing,” he added.

Oyeyemi said upon the report, the DPO Lafenwa division, CSP Muraina Ayilara, led his men to the church, but the place had been deserted.

The PPRO added that the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, directed the DPO to fish out the suspect and bring him to book.

“In compliance with the CP’s directive, the DPO and his men embarked on intelligence and technical-based investigation, and their efforts paid off when the prophet was arrested on August 6, 2020 around 5am.

“On interrogation, the suspect confessed to committing most of the allegations levelled against him and that it was the reason he ran away when he heard that the police were looking for him.

“Recovered from his home were assorted dangerous charms,” he added.

Oyeyemi said the Commissioner of Police had ordered the suspect to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.

“He also warned those hiding under religion to perpetrate evils to desist from it or meet their Waterloo.

“The CP appealed to members of the public to beware of wolves in sheep skin masquerading as men of God, as they are out to milk them dry before destroying their lives,” the PPRO said.

The world may end before next RCCG convention – Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has told his church members that the world may come to an end before the 69th convention.

He stated this on Friday during the 68th Annual Convention of the church, which held virtually because of the lockdown occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic.

The renowned cleric, however, stated that he does know when the Lord will return but urged his members whom he often refers to as “my children” to prepare for the end.

During the program themed, ‘Wonderful’, Adeboye, who preached on the topic, ‘Seven Wonderful Things About God’, implored his church members and thousands of viewers from all over the world to turn away from sinful lifestyles because “Psalm 7:11 says God is angry with the wicked every day.”

The 78-year-old preacher said, “Don’t say I didn’t tell you, my children, I don’t know which convention will be the last one.

“The Lord may return before we have another convention. I don’t know when Jesus may return, but if any of you fails to make it to heaven, it will not be because I didn’t tell you the whole truth. God can be wonderfully angry.

“Watch your steps those of you who are playing games with the all-seeing God. God is angry with the wicked every day.

“Your life is in His hands and He can decide your last breath. But if you surrender your life to Him today, God can still save your soul and give you a brand new beginning.”

According to him, the size of God is wonderful, His love, mercy, glory, name, and anger are all wonderful.

Adeboye noted that the wrath of God could be dangerous, saying, “There is always one prayer I always pray. That’s my secret I’m telling you now.

“I’m not asking for money, I’m not asking for clothes, I know my God is more than sufficient.

“Only one prayer I pray: God, don’t let me ever annoy You.

“And He has proved to me that the more He loves you, the more you must be careful.”

Continuing, the pastor said, “It doesn’t matter what anybody may tell you, my God is not a Father Christmas.

“Oh yes, He is love and His love is wonderful. But, according to Hebrews 12:6, the Bible says whomsoever He loves, He chastens and scourges every son He receives.

“If He loves you and you are special to Him, be careful, don’t toy with Him. In Revelation 3:19, He says, as many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. He says be zealous and therefore repent. Don’t mess with God.

“If God loves you, He will not leave you on your own. He won’t allow you to go ahead and do whatever you want because it is written in Proverbs 29:15 that a child left to himself will bring shame.

“Hebrews 12:29 made it clear, yes, God is love but He is also the consuming fire. Hebrews 10:31 says it is a very dangerous thing to fall into the hands of the living God,” he added.

Its national tally is now 2,214,137 cases, with 62,117 cases recorded on Sunday.

Brazil reported 23,010 new cases and 572 deaths from the disease caused by the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said on Sunday.

Dr. Anthony Fauci told Reuters on Wednesday there could be at least one vaccine that works and is safe by year-end.

But Trump offered a more optimistic view, saying it was possible the United States would have a coronavirus vaccine by the time of the Nov. 3 presidential election.

Virus free New Zealand world’s safest place

New Zealand, the Pacific island nation of 5 million people is now the safest place in the world right now.

In a COVID-19 pandemic raging world, New Zealand has successfully kept the disease away from its shores, in the last 100 days.

Although, New Zealanders have returned to normal life, the authorities are concerned that people were now refusing testing, not using the government contact tracing apps, and even ignoring basic hygiene rules.

“Achieving 100 days without community transmission is a significant milestone, however, as we all know, we can’t afford to be complacent,” Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said.

“We have seen overseas how quickly the virus can re-emerge and spread in places where it was previously under control, and we need to be prepared to quickly stamp out any future cases in New Zealand,” he said.

New Zealand has 23 active cases in managed isolation facilities, and 1,219 COVID-19 cases in all so far.

Vietnam, which went for three months without detecting any domestic transmission, is now racing to control a new outbreak in Danang.

Neighbouring Australia’s second-biggest city, Melbourne, has gone into a six week lockdown due to a surge in cases. The second wave of cases in Melbourne has been largely a result of lapses in quarantining.

“For countries like Australia and New Zealand the source of such outbreaks is likely to be from managed isolation and quarantine facilities because of the large numbers of people held there and the multiple shifts of staff involved in looking after them,” said Michael Baker, Professor of Public Health at the University of Otago.

There have been cases of returning New Zealanders sneaking out of quarantine, and other security slip ups.

New Zealand last week ramped up testing at quarantine facilities and clinics, and started work on technology to track people using Bluetooth technology.

Ardern kicked off her re-election campaign on Saturday calling it a ‘Covid election’.

But a resurgence of cases due to “Covid fatigue” could spark a backlash against her, and give the opposition a chance to work their way back into the election contest.

COVID-19: Churches in Lagos reopen, record low turnout

Many churches in Lagos on Sunday witnessed low turnout on the first Sunday of reopening after 20 weeks of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu had on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2020, relaxed some of the lockdown measures instituted by the Lagos State Government to combat the spread of the pandemic.

Following the decline in COVID-19 positive cases, Gov. Sanwo-Olu in his 17th briefing on COVID-19 response had directed the re-opening of places of worship in the state, starting from Aug. 7, 2020, for mosques and Aug. 9, 2020, for churches.

In March 2020, part of the efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 was that the Lagos State Government announced various lockdown measures and ban on public gatherings.

Initially, with 11 confirmed cases, the state government ordered schools to shut down and banned public gatherings of over 50 people, particularly religious congregations.

The correspondent who visited St.Dominic’s Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos, reports that Masses were held at five different centres simultaneously.

The parishioners complied with COVID-19 protocols such as wearing of face masks, observing social distancing, and others.

Rev. Fr. Charles Onwordi in his homily in one of the Mass centres welcomed the parishioners with a Homily titled: “Fear not, cry out to God for an end to this pandemic.’’

Onwordi, who spoke after the Mass, said that COVID-19 pandemic was an experience to draw the world closer to God.

“We are happy to have our people back and pray for those who lost their lives to the pandemic that they would rest in peace.

“We advise our members to always abide by COVID-19 guidelines so that we will stop the spread of the pandemic and pray for an end to it”, he said.

Mr David Okonkwo, a parishioner at the Church, thanked God for His mercies that he witnessed the first Sunday of the reopening of churches in the state after 20 weeks of lockdown.

Okonkwo said that he had missed the gathering of the faithful in the last 20 weeks and prayed that this would not take many away from God.

At the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Power House, Shomolu, there was also a low turnout but the members thanked God for sparing their lives.

The Pastor- in –Charge, who simply identified himself as Hassan, said that it was wonderful having the members back because many had died due to complications from the pandemic.

“I pray that many souls will be drawn to God because their survival is not by power, ” Hassan said.

At the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Muniru Baruwa Street, Surulere, the church had yet to reopen for members to attend services.

A member there told NAN that services were still being conducted online but that preparations were in top gear for physical services to start soon.

He said the church premises were fumigated and disinfected on Saturday; adding that other preparations in line with COVID-19 protocols would continue during the week.
