Wikipedia ADDS Nigeria to list of failed states

Wikipedia has updated the list of failed states and Nigeria is now included as one of the countries on the list.

Some countries listed as a failed state by Wikipedia includes; Syria, Somalia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Rwanda, Liberia, Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan.

Wikipedia describes a failed state as a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly.

Such state can also fail if the government loses its legitimacy even if it is performing its functions properly. For a stable state, it is necessary for the government to enjoy both effectiveness and legitimacy. Likewise, when a nation weakens and its standard of living declines, it introduces the possibility of total governmental collapse.

I was detained for 82 days, student who created Jonathan’s parody account talks about his ordeal

A final year student of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso, Olusola Babatunde, says he was detained by the police for 82 days and nearly contracted Covid-19 at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Garki, Abuja.

Babatunde said he was detained for creating a parody account of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Babatunde spoke in an exclusive interview with The Punch on Tuesday, shortly after he was released.

The student, who has no parents, said he and scores of suspects were cramped in small cells in contravention of the Covid-19 guidelines.

He said a Chinese miner who was detained in another cell fell ill and tested positive for Covid-19.

Babatunde said, “There was no social distancing. I guess the people in the cells are exceptional. It is like Covid-19 doesn’t infect them and this is despite the fact that new suspects are brought in everyday without testing.

“However, we had an incident just once. There was a Chinese man who was a gold miner who fell ill. He was taken to a hospital and tested positive for Covid-19; so. he was hurriedly released.

“He was in the Force Intelligence Bureau Department. So, only the suspects in that cell were tested. We were all at risk of getting infected with Covid-19.”

The student said while in custody, he was fed twice a day and wore the same clothes for 82 days and was only allowed to wash his clothes every four days.

“It wasn’t easy. I spent 82 days in detention and I was transferred to three different cells. I wore the same clothes for 82 days,” Babatunde said.

The student said he felt betrayed that former President Jonathan could order his arrest because he was one of his biggest supporters.

Babatunde said, “The funny thing is that I even tweeted good things about Goodluck Jonathan a few weeks before my arrest. I said Jonathan’s administration was better than that of the current President. So, I was shocked, but this is Nigeria.”

When asked if he was still a fan of Jonathan, Babatunde responded laughingly, “May God help us.”

Narrating how he was arrested, the student said his uncle called him that policemen wanted to see him.

The student said on getting to his uncle’s house, the police arrested him and did not reveal to him the reason for his arrest.

“It was when I got to the station that I was asked what I did to offend Goodluck Jonathan,” Babatude said.

“I spent over a month in police custody before I was arraigned,” he added.

The student said he created the parody account with the best of intentions and never defrauded anyone or impersonated the former President.

He said he abided by the Twitter rules guiding the creating of parody accounts and wondered why he was subjected to such wickedness.

“I set it up just to make the timeline fun. I have my own personal twitter account, but I just wanted to ‘catch cruise’. It was my personal Twitter account that I converted. It was the same handle @jayythedope, but I changed my picture and profile name to that of Jonathan.

“I left my cover picture as @Jayythedope. All my information and personal email address were included in my bio. It was not an attempt to impersonate the former President. I also stated clearly that I was not GEJ. It was just a parody account. I didn’t expect things to blow up the way they did,” he said.

The student said his Twitter account, which had over 60,000 followers and was also his means of livelihood, had been suspended due to the controversy he generated.

Also speaking with The Punch, the student’s lawyer, Mr Tope Akinyode, said Jonathan had already written through his lawyers to withdraw his complaint of impersonation.

“We just got the bail process completed. In addition, the President has written through his people to the court to withdraw the case. The withdrawal will come up on the next adjourned date,” Akinyode said.

More weapons, jets to be imported to fight insurgency - Buhari

To raise the bar in the fight against insurgency, more weapons and fighter aircraft are being imported, President Muhammadu Buhari told governors on Tuesday.

According to him, the military hardware are being imported from the United States, China and Jordan.

But the President called on Nigerians to be patient before the new equipment could be deployed because of the need to train the pilots who will fly the fighter jets.

Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar gave a hint last week in Kainji, Niger State when he said 12 Super Tucano jets were coming from the United States to join the fleet of the Air Force.

President Buhari met with the Security Committee of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at the Villa Council Chambers. With him were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and heads of security and intelligence agencies.

Six members of the NGF (one per geo-political zone) joined the meeting via zoom.

They are: Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Babagana Zulum (Borno), David Umahi (Ebonyi) and Duoye Diri (Beyelsa).

President Buhari has been holding meetings on security since Sunday.

The President dispelled assumptions that the terrorists in the Northeast had better weapons and more money. He described what is left of them are “mere scavengers desperate for food, raiding shops and markets, and killing innocent persons in the process.”

Body of man who went missing 30 years ago found in car submerged in river [photos]

The body of a man who disappeared three decades ago has been found in a car submerged in a river in Northern Ireland.

James Patterson went missing on October 6, 1991 and was last seen at Mid Ulster Hospital in Londonderry. He was 54 years old.

Search teams found a Ford Orion vehicle in the River Bann, in Bellaghy, last month.

After the car was recovered, human remains were discovered inside which were later identified as those of Mr Patterson.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Councillor for the Ulster Unionist Party, Derek McKinney, said he hoped the investigation ‘will be able to give his family some answers after all of these years.’

He was quoted in the Daily Star as saying: ‘I knew James’ brother and he told me before he passed that he was a quiet man who would keep himself to himself.

‘He said that he would think about his brother every night wondering where he had gone.’

A PSNI statement said: ‘Police can confirm human remains were found following the recovery of a car from the River Bann at the New Ferry Road in Bellaghy last month.

‘The vehicle was recovered from the river in July and, following examination, it has been confirmed the human remains are those of James Patterson, who went missing on 6th October 1991.

‘The family have been informed and request for privacy at this time.’

Fani-Kayode threatens to leave PDP if....

Former Minister of Aviation and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Femi Fani-Kayode has threatened to leave the party alongside others if the party’s National Working Committee, NWC takes the Cross River State party structure from the state governor, Ben Ayade.

The party’s NWC had posted the August 8 state Congress in the state by one week following a stalemate that arose from what sources said was the failure of stakeholders to reach a consensus over the choice of candidates for the various positions.

Reacting to the impasse in the state chapter of the party, Fani-Kayode in series of tweets on his Twitter handle @realFFK on Wednesday, disclosed that he and others will leave the party if Ayade leaves the party.

He said: “It would be a big mistake for the NWC of the @OfficialPDPNig to take the party structures in his state away from Ben Ayade, governor of Cross Rivers state, and hand them over to anyone else. If this is done and Ayade leaves the party be rest assured that many of us will leave with him.

“You cannot and must not undermine a sitting Governor or attempt to humiliate him in his own state and before his people. Some of those that are advocating and behind this nonsense would never allow it to happen in their own states. A word is enough for the wise.

“No-one, no matter how big or powerful, should think that they own the @OfficialPDPNig. If there is any attempt to undermine Ayaade it will spark off a crisis in the party that will split it right down the middle and the consequences will not be limited to Cross Rivers state.”

Lagos opens mental health centre for public servants

The Lagos State Government has inaugurated an employee wellness centre to cater to the mental health of its workforce.

The Head of Service, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, on Tuesday, said the centre, located on the premises of Folarin Coker Staff Clinic inside the state secretariat complex, Alausa-Ikeja,  was structured to enhance the welfare of public servants to function effectively and attain satisfactory standards of mental stability in the discharge of their duties.

Muri-Okunola explained that the centre would provide a wide range of social support services and interventions through a community-based mobile treatment team comprising of case managers, peer support workers, psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, nurses and vocational specialists.

He commended the efforts of the state Ministry of Health and Ministry of Youth and Social Development for establishing the centre.

“It is my candid view that such commitment to the provision of social support infrastructure on the part of the state government towards ensuring the emotional stability of public servants will go a long way, not only in boosting the overall well-being of members of staff individually, but also in enhancing the effectiveness and overall productivity of the state workforce, as a collective,” he added.

Photos: Inside the luxury Maldives resort where only the HIGH and MIGHTY can be entertained

Imagine a resort where you sit in a private villa with your own pool, and steps leading down to turquoise waters where you can snorkel with the likes of dolphins and turtles.

Oh, and you have your very own butler and chef on hand to cater to your every need.

Well, that's exactly what's on offer for guests at the Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, an utterly luxurious resort that's immediately going on our 'if we win the lottery' lists.

For a start, you need a pretty big budget, with prices for a stay at one of its residences starting from £2,900 a night. Alternatively, you can hire the entire resort for £38,000 a night.

The resort sleeps up to 34 people - so if you fill the property and split the costs, it's approximately £1117pp a night.

So what exactly do you get for that kind of price tag?

Well for a start, there are 15 overwater villas which sleep two people. Guests in each villa will have a dedicated butler, a super king size bed, and a private swimming pool.

You can also dive straight into those breathtaking turquoise waters the Maldives are famous for. The area boasts impressive wildlife including dolphins and turtles, so a snorkel would definitely be on the cards!

Feeling peckish? Guests have access to personal chefs to whip whatever meal they fancy. There are no set dining times - you can request meals at any time.

If you head to the restaurant there isn't a menu; again, the chefs there will whip up whatever it is you're in the mood to eat. Alternatively, you can opt to eat in your villa, on the beach, or outside under the stars.

Of course lounging by the pool, taking a dip in the sea and eating your favourite meals can take its toll - but luckily the resort has a luxurious spa offering up heaps of treatments, as well as a steam room, nail bar, sauna and even a gym where you have access to a personal trainer, yoga instructor and meditation guru.

Don't fancy making the trip to the spa? You can enjoy spa treatments anywhere on the island, whether you want a massage in your room or on the beach.

As well as the private villas, guests can make use of the resort's freshwater infinity pool and heaps of sandy beaches. There are plenty of complementary activities on offer too, from paddle-boarding to kayaking and scuba diving.

According to the resort's General Manager, Bradley Calder, the island "is designed to be every luxury traveller’s personal dream". The resort operates on a mantra of 'Anything, Anytime, Anywhere', so that guests can have the ultimate dream getaway.

Gbenga Daniel reveals Kashamu's LAST political WISH

Ex-Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, on Tuesday, said ex-Senator Buruji Kashamu’s late wish was to make peace with everyone including those he disagreed with politically.

Daniel said this when he paid a condolence visit to the deceased’s family in the Ijebu North Local Government Area.

Kashamu, who was the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 elections in the state, died from COVID-19 complications on Saturday.

Daniel, in a statement signed by his media aide, Steve Oliyide, said Kashamu sent a delegation to his principal on Wednesday, three days before his death.

The statement read, “Buruji sent a delegation to me last Wednesday 4th August, 2020 who came to discuss with me about his wish that I should provide further leadership for the political structure which he built and has nurtured over the years.

“When the representatives which include his lawyer came, I discouraged political discussion and pleaded with them to all go and pray for his survival. Unfortunately, he passed on a few days after.

“We’re mourning a great man. His wish was to make peace with everyone before his death. As a human, you must have strong friends and strong enemies.

“We met in 2008. I recalled that he came to show appreciation for the construction of the road leading to his house. He said he was touched that I was able to construct the road despite the fact notable politicians like a former deputy governor and a former House of Representatives member have their houses along the same road.

“While commiserating with the family, Daniel said I’m not here to play politics but to commiserate with you the family. God will continue to uphold you because while alive Buruji helped a lot of people.

“He was somebody you should be proud of because he did his utmost best to help humanity.

“Reacting to the former governor’s visit, the son of the deceased, Kabiru Kasamu, said he was happy that the differences between Daniel and his father were resolved before his death.

“He said he looks forward to the continuation of such relationship between the two families.”

United Kingdom OFFICIALLY falls into RECESSION

The United Kingdom has officially fallen into recession for the first time in 11 years.

The reasons is due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, reports say.

Britain officially entered recession, with data set showing a collapse of around 20 percent of gross domestic product in the second quarter -- the worst contraction in Europe.

The Office for National Statistics is uniformly expected to confirm the unprecedented contraction between April and June.

It is Britain’s first recession since the 2008 financial crisis.

The predicted drop in output reflects the mammoth fall in economic activity nationwide during the quarter due to the lockdown imposed to tackle the pandemic.

Economists polled by Bloomberg have on average predicted a decline of 20.7 percent in the second quarter, compared to the first three months of the year.

The UK economy contracted by 2.2 percent in the first quarter and, with a recession defined as two successive quarters of decline, the data on Wednesday will herald the country’s first in a decade.

Initial figures already released show economic activity plunged around 20 percent in April, before rebounding slightly in May thanks to the first easing of restrictions.

The grim economic news comes despite unprecedented government interventions, including spending tens of billions of pounds on job support schemes in a bid to avoid mass layoffs.

Meanwhile, the Bank of England has launched massive asset buybacks and cut interest rates to historic lows that are almost zero.

If Britain’s GDP drops by more than 20 percent, it will have posted the worst performance in the second quarter in Europe, ahead of Spain (-18.5 percent) and France (-13.8 percent).

The British economy also relies more heavily on the hard-hit services sector than other European countries.

Lagos Assembly considering to punish parents of cultists

The parents of youths found guilty of cultism in Lagos State may become liable for punishment if a bill for the prohibition of unlawful societies and cultism in Lagos is passed into law.

This was part of the submission of some lawmakers at the state House of Assembly during plenary on Tuesday.

The members were discussing the bill sent by the Attorney General of the state, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo.

The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, said there was the need to differentiate among the various types of cultism in the country so as not to create  another problem while solving one.

“We need to look at the way and manner weapons are used. The existing law should be seriously looked into,” he added.

Obasa therefore committed the bill to the House Committee on Judiciary, which was directed to report back to the House in three weeks.

In his contribution, the Majority Leader of the House, Sanai Agunbiade, representing Ikorodu 1, said sponsors of cultism were not captured under the bill.

He said, “The suspected student should be investigated before suspension. Parents of students who engage in any cult group should also be liable,” he said.

Cancer research scientist murdered while doing her daily run

A successful cancer research scientist and mother-of-two was murdered and her body dumped in a creek while out on her daily run in Texas at the weekend.

The body of Sarmistha Sen, 43, was found dead near a creek at Legacy Drive and Marchman Way in Plano Saturday morning less than two hours after she went out on her regular run along the Chisholm Trail.

Plano police have named a 29-year-old burglary suspect as a person of interest in the slaying.

Bakari Moncrief, an out-of-state resident said to be visiting relatives in Plano, was arrested for a burglary Saturday morning at a property close to where Sen's body was found.

Keen runner Sen was killed when she went out on her regular early Saturday morning jog.

A passerby discovered the victim's body about 20 to 25 feet below the trail near the creek at around 7 a.m.

Sen's cause of death has not been released but police confirmed it is being investigated as a homicide.

Moncrief is being held on a $1 million bond for the burglary charge

Neighbors have also planned a memorial run in her honor in the local area for next Saturday morning.

Sen grew up in Sindri, India, and moved to Bangalore to study before moving to Plano in 2004, according to a Caring Bridge page set up by her family.

She studied at UT Dallas and University of Birmingham, Alabama and worked on cancer research for most of her career most recently as a clinical research manager at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center.

'She was passionate about cancer care and was a lifelong supporter of cancer research,' the page reads.

The scientist was also an 'avid runner' as well as a 'gardener and a great cook'.

'Sarmistha lived a free and fearless life inspiring many with her infectious energy and carefree smile,' the page reads.

She leaves behind her husband Arindam Roy and two sons aged 6 and 12.

Man battling coronavirus wakes up after three weeks to realise he is the only one to have survived the virus in his family

A locksmith who was in a coma for three weeks battling coronavirus awoke to be told his mother and her partner had both succumbed to the illness.

Scott Miller, 43, was rushed to intensive care at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with the virus and was placed in an induced coma, unaware his mother Norma, 76, was dying upstairs in the same hospital.

Norma passed away and a week later her partner, 69, also died of coronavirus.

Doctor's were unsure that Scott would survive but when he did manage to pull through, he was greeted with the tragic news of his mother's passing.

Scott had realised his mother was ill when she had a fall on March 21 and was unable to get back up.

She tested positive for coronavirus at hospital, the BBC reports, and Scott was allowed to see her on the ward, though he says that he was so ill at the time that he doesn't remember any of it.

Describing the moment he woke up after his coma, Scott said: 'When I came round, I just had a gut feeling that something had happened to mum and when the nurse told me it was just disbelief and shock. It was very hard.'

Scott, a self-employed locksmith, weighed 22 stone before he fell ill.

Since then, he has lost 3.5 stone and even learned to walk again, going to the gym three times a week and playing hockey.

He has warned people in Scotland to not drop their guard against the virus.

He said: 'People need to understand it's a real killer, I don't think people are really taking it seriously.'

American soldier and wife murder their four children with carbon monoxide inside their SUV as they also take their own life in chilling murder-suicide

Authorities believe Army Staff Sgt. Jared Esquibel Harless and his wife were both responsible for murdering their four young children before killing themselves two months ago.

When authorities discovered the entire Harless family dead in the back of an SUV last month, they theorized that the 38-year-old father was solely responsible the deaths.

Now, Lt. Jesse Salame said Harless had help from his wife, 36-year-old Sheryll Ann, and conspired together in the murder-suicide.

A medical examiner confirmed that the family-of-five died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Lt. Salame admitted to the San Antonio Express-News that an official motive has not been determined, but listed several possible catalysts that could have triggered the deaths.

'A combination and life stress that was exacerbated by some mental health issues, and the stress that is not uncommon with having children with special needs as well,' were key factors in the apparent murder-suicide.

Authorities identified the children as Esteban Lorenzo Harless, 4; Penelope Arcadia Harless, 3; Avielle Magdalena Harless, 1, and 11-month-old Apollo Harless.

It's unclear which of the four children may have had special needs.

Esquibel Harless was a US Army soldier assigned to the 470th Military Intelligence Brigade at Joint Base San Antonio and had moved to the neighborhood in January from Washington State.

Neighbors told Fox San Antonio the family were new to the area but they never saw anything 'out of the ordinary'.

On June 4, police officers responded to a gated subdivision where the Harless family had a two-story home.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the smell of carbon dioxide was so strong when officers arrived that it 'kind of blew everybody back out the door.'

He said police had gone to the house for a welfare check requested by the husband's employer, who had been unable to reach him.

'They were OK yesterday because he checked in with his work,' McManus said. 'So it happened sometime overnight.'

McManus said on the front door of the home was a 'cryptic note' with military jargon.

A member of the military translated it to: 'Bodies or people inside, do not enter. The animals are in the freezer.'

The chief said the note also hinted at booby traps.

'Based on the note that we received, we were very cautious about going in, and we were trying to find out what was in there before we made entry,' the chief said.

When they entered, the cops were overcome by a heavy, noxious odor which turned out to be carbon monoxide.

Police said they found some explosives after they entered, but they were not rigged, Ken 5 reports.

The family was found in the back seat of a SUV inside the family's garage. Two pet cats were also found dead in the front seat.

'It's the whole picture. The adults, the children, the pets,' McManus said. 'Saying it's not pretty - there's no words to describe that.'

At the time, McManus said there was evidence that 'it was not an accident' and he did not suggest that anyone outside the family was involved.
