Ghana shuts Nigerian traders shops over $1m charge

The President of Nigerian Traders Union in Ghana, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nnaji, yesterday decried Ghanaian authorities’ closure of shops owned by Nigerians doing business in the country.

Nnaji, who made this known in a telephone interview with newsmen urged the Federal Government to intervene in the matter.

He said that shops belonging to Nigerian traders in Accra were locked up by Ghanaian authorities who demanded cash payment of $1 million from them before the shops would be opened.

According to him, an inter-ministerial task force went round on August 10 to identify shops owned by Nigerian traders and request for registration of business taxes, resident permit, standard control and Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) registration.

“Most of our members do not have the GIPC registration, because it requires one million dollars cash or equity and they gave us 14 days within which to regularise.

“As of Thursday, they had moved to another area and started locking up shops of Nigerian traders. Nigerian life in Ghana matters. This is livelihood of Nigerians being destroyed by Ghanaian Authorities. This is not being perpetrated by a trade union, but Ghanaian authorities. They demanded that we must employ a minimum of 25 skilled Ghanaian workers and must not trade in commodities that Ghanaian traders have applied to trade in,” Nnaji said.

“The humiliation of Nigerians is getting out of hand. We are calling on the Nigerian government to come to our aid. We have legally registered our businesses and we pay taxes,” Nnaji said.

Dubai ruler sends medical supplies to nigeria

The Ruler of Dubai has ordered 14 tonnes of medical supplies and 20 tonnes of food supplies to Nigeria and Sudan, the Dubai Media Office said on Saturday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum “orders humanitarian aid flight to Sudan and Nigeria carrying 14 tonnes of medical supplies, 20 tonnes of food supplies,” the press office said in a tweet.

The Nigerian government is yet to confirm the reception of the supplies or the date it is expected in the country.

The supplies, a statement on the Ruler’s website noted, was to help Nigeria fight the pandemic.

On August 11, the United States Government also handed over 200 modern ventilators to the Nigerian government to aid the latter’s fight against the pandemic.

Meanwhile, 170 Nigerians returned from the United Arab Emirates to Nigeria on Saturday, taking the number of evacuees from the Arab nation to over 3,000 amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).

President Trump’s younger brother ‘Robert’ is dead

Donald Trump’s younger brother Robert died on Saturday after being hospitalized for an undisclosed illness, the US president said in a statement mourning his loss.

“It is with heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight,” Trump said in a White House statement.

“He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace.”

The 74-year-old president had visited his brother on Friday at a hospital in New York, staying for about 45 minutes.

US media reports had reported that Robert Trump was seriously ill, although there were no details.

Donald Trump, who was stopping in New York on the way to his golf club in nearby Bedminster, New Jersey for the weekend, told reporters Friday only that “he’s having a hard time.”

While far less famous than his older brother, Robert Trump, who was born in 1948, had long been an integral part of the family real estate empire and was fiercely loyal to the president.

Robert Trump unsuccessfully went to court to try to get an injunction preventing publication of a book by his niece Mary Trump, called “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.”

The book, which paints Donald Trump as the product of a “toxic” family was a “disgrace,” Robert Trump said. Although a temporary restraining order was applied, a judge lifted this in July, allowing publication.

Donald Trump has previously called his brother “wonderful” and said they have “had a great relationship for a long time, from day one.”

Donald Trump’s daughter and adviser Ivanka said on Twitter Saturday: “Uncle Robert, we love you. You are in our hearts and prayers, always.”

Corrective surgery as hope rises for Kwara blue eyes woman, children

For Risiqot Ayegbami, a housewife in her late 20s, born with blue eyes, and her two little daughters with the same colour of eyes, the challenges they faced in her matrimonial home over their condition, has launched them into stardom.

Until her husband, Abdulwasiu Jimoh, sent her packing, she had resided at Olomoyoyo compound in Ogele area of Ilorin.

Risiqot, who claimed to be abandoned by Jimoh when she gave birth to her second child with blue eyes, was advised by friends to approach an online medium based in Ilorin to solicit alms from government and other philanthropists for their upkeep.

Today, that step has paid off as the First Lady of Kwara State, Mrs. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, has intervened with the initial cash donation of N250,000, for the upkeep of Risiqot and her children.

Furthermore, Toyin Saraki, wife of immediate past Senate President and former governor of Kwara State, through her pet project, Wellbeing Foundation Africa, also donated N250, 000 to her and the children.

On the part of the current First Lady, in furtherance of her gesture, announced a scholarship for the enrollment of the two children at Roemichs International School, an expensive school for children of the rich.

Kwara State Ministry of Health was also given the mandate to provide the medical intervention that would correct the eyeballs of Risiqot and her two children.

A Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr. Dupe Ademola-Popoola, told journalists in Ilorin that she had visited the family and assessed the lady and her two children.

Lagos-Ibadan rail service begins in September

Skeletal rail service between Lagos and Ibadan will begin mid-September, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said today.

The Managing Director of NRC, Mr Fidet Okhiria said the skeletal operations will be made of 16 trips daily on the Standard Guage rail line.

Okhiria disclosed this on Saturday in Ibadan during an inspection tour of the project by the Ministers of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi and Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

He said that since the track laying had been completed between Ebute-Metta Junction (EBJ) in Lagos and Ibadan with stations under construction, operation would start between Yaba in Lagos and Ibadan.

“We will start by the middle of September from Yaba to Ibadan while the other construction finishing will continue.

“We already have 24 coaches and a set of DMUs (Diesel Multiple Units) made of eight coaches.

“With that, we intend to have 16 trips a day,” he said.

According to him, the corporation will not wait for all the stations to be ready before commencing operations, so that Nigerians can start enjoying the dividends of the tracks and coaches that have arrived.

The rail tracks on the 156km modern rail line have been completed from EBJ to Ibadan while the 10 major and minor stations are at various stages of completion.

The stations along the corridor are Apapa, EBJ, Agege, Agbado, Kajola, Papalanto, Abeokuta, Olodo, Omi-Adio and Ibadan. .

Speaking on the completion time for the project, Amaechi said they were targeting January 2021 if the Covid-19 will not be a constraint to the workers.

“Before Covid-19, for every station we have between 150 to 200 workers but now we have 10 to 20 workers on the sites.

“We have told them now to increase the number of workers and manage Covid very well.

“Covid-19 has come to stay but government has to run.

“We have to deliver our promises to the people because that is why we are elected, so, let us hope that by January Ex year, the project will be ready, he said.

The minister urged the Chinese contractor handling the project to speed up work on the construction for timely delivery.

South Africa lifts toughest COVID-19 restrictions today

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday announced that stringent Covid-19 regulations would be eased on Sunday as the country’s infection rate falls.

The government will remove “nearly all” restrictions on economic activity as of Aug. 17, lift restrictions on inter-provincial travel and the current ban on alcohol and tobacco sales, Ramaphosa said in a televised address to the nation on Saturday evening.

The president also said restrictions on family and social visits will be removed, but South Africans will stay obligated to wear a face mask in public, and no more than 50 people may gather.

“All indications are that South Africa has reached the peak and moved beyond the inflection point of the curve

So far, South Africa had a night-time curfew and controversially banned alcohol and tobacco sales, citing health reasons.

“A national “state of disaster,” implemented five months ago, will however be extended by one month, until Sept. 15.

“South Africa has confirmed 583,653 cases and remains by far the worst affected country on the continent, the president said.

“But the number of active cases was falling every day, and the recovery rate is currently at 80 per cent,” Ramaphosa said.

The restrictions have had a devastating effect on the country’s economy, with millions struggling to survive, and poverty and food insecurity worsening dramatically in just a few weeks.

Even before the pandemic, Africa’s second-largest economy was in a difficult situation.

With high unemployment and brutal social inequality, the country has struggled for years with structural economic problems and an unreliable electricity supply.

Stranded Nigerians forced to disembark from aircraft in London airport, protest

No fewer than 200 Nigerians at Stansted Airport, London, UK, are currently stranded and protesting after they were forced to disembark from a Nigeria-bound Titan Airline aircraft.

One of the stranded passengers exclusively explained to Vanguard that the flight was billed to take off 7a.m., August 15, but was rescheduled for 10a.m., then 1p,m.

He explained further that “the minimum amount paid by a passenger was N411,000. The pilot told us that they (the Nigerian government) refused him a landing permit, which was granted before now.

“We were forced to pay COVID-19 test in Nigeria after undergoing one test here in the United Kingdom. All of us were forced to pay N50,400 to the hospital for tests, when we get to Nigeria.”

The passenger also said that the requirements for boarding the aircraft include: “Nigerian passport, COVID-19 test results, payment for another COVID-19 test in Nigeria.

“The police chased us out of the aircraft without making another arrangement for us,” one of the Nigerians at the London airport added.

At press time, efforts are in place to get the Nigerian government’s reaction on the development.

Lagos-Ibadan rail: Crowd cheers Amaechi, Mohammed as duo ride on new trains

Elated Nigerians on Saturday cheered the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, and the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed as the duo inspected the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail project.

It was like a carnival of some sorts at various rail stations as people gathered and hailed the ministers who rode on new trains in company with top management staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

The inspection, which commenced at Ebute-Metta Junction (EBJ) Rail Station, saw the ministers and other NRC management team, ride on the narrow gauge corridor to Apapa port to monitor the standard gauge track laying and the rail station.

The team, which returned to EBJ, boarded the new train at Tejuosho, Yaba, and embarked on a ride to Ibadan in Oyo State.

The government officials stopped at Agege to the admiration of many residents who stood by both sides to cheer the team over the new trains.

At the Agege rail station under construction, Amaechi told the contractor handling the project, China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC) to speed up the work.

The minister also said that the CCECC needed to work hard to deliver all projects being handled all over the country before April 2023.

NAN reports that the 10 major and minor stations on the 156km rail line were at various stages of completion but the rail track has been completed to EBJ from Ibadan.

The stations along the corridor are Apapa, EBJ, Agege, Agbado, Kajola, Papalanto, Abeokuta, Olodo, Omi-Adio and Ibadan.

Govt releases execution order against Man who demolished Enugu airport fence

Against the background of Architect J.J Emejulu’s claim that his residence was arbitrarily pulled down, the Enugu state government has made public a court order it obtained to demolish his deemed illegal residence.

In the order made available to Vanguard, the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, prayed for an order authorizing it “to demolish the respondent’s (Emejulu) illegal structure located at No. 23/24 Eziokwe Street, community Estate, Enugu with code No. 003005835.”

The State government agency also prayed the court for an order restraining the respondent from carrying out any such development at that location.

The Court granted the application by Motion Ex-Parte stating that “the Applicant is authorized/ directed to remove the respondent’s illegal structure located at No. 23/24 Eziokwe Street, community Estate, Enugu with code No. 003005835.”

The order also restrained Architect Emejulu from carrying out any such development at that location.

Chairman of ECTDA, Dr. Josef Onoh, while reacting to the allegation that the state government exercised revenge on Emejulu for demolishing about two kilometers of perimeter fence at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, said it was not true.

Onoh said: “I was not a revenge. He destroyed a federal government property which he has to sort out with the federal government, but this is a state function, exercising control of unapproved structures. He was duly given 21 days notice and he was properly served.

“The property stood on a water way and it had to go. There is another building close to that one, on the same street, which has already been marked for demolition, tenants in that one have already moved out because the property already has severe cracks from the foundation and we are going to pull it down very soon.

“If you are observant, you would have noted that the Enugu Capital Territory has been carrying out control measures in Enugu Capital city and Emejulu’s property cannot be an exception, despite whatever axe he has to grind with the federal government.”

Emejulu had on Wednesday executed a court order and demolished the Airport fencing under reconstruction in a bid to take possession of the airport land he said was rightfully bought by him from Nike community.

Son of former Angolan president sentenced to jail for corruption

Jose Filomeno dos Santos, son of former president who ruled Angola for 38 years, was sentenced to five years in prison by the nation’s Supreme Court in Luanda on Friday for a multi-billion dollar embezzlement scheme attempting to transfer to $1.5 billion into a private Swiss bank account from the sovereign wealth fund – which he oversaw for 5 years from 2013.

Three of his co-defendants including the former governor of the national bank of Angola (BNA) Valter Filipe da Silva, received sentences of 3-6 years for similar crimes of fraud, embezzlement and influence peddling.

Zenu, as he is known, is the first to be persecuted from this presidential family as part of an anti-graft campaign led by current President João Lourenço – who came to power in 2017.

A second family member might follow suit as in February, Angolan investigators froze the assets of Zenu’s billionaire half-sister Isabel dos Santos as she is being probed for a lengthy list of crimes namely mismanagement, embezzlement and money laundering during her stewardship of the state-run oil giant Sonangol.

It appears that Lourenço has mainly targeted the relatives of his predecessor Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who appointed members of his family to key positions in the country during his presidency. This, unfortunately, left a legacy of nepotism and poverty, with only a small elite, since then, having benefited from Angola’s vast oil and mineral reserves.

The southwest African country has been slow to recover from a civil war which lasted from 1975 to 2002 civil war. A large part of the nation’s population live in poverty and have limited access to basic services.

Large pockets of the population live in poverty with limited access to basic services.

#BBNaija: I feel very stupid having anything to do with you, Erica tells Kiddwaya [video]

In what it may appear to be, the relationship between Erica and Kiddwaya who at the moment are among the most popular housemates in the Big Brother Nigeria Lockdown edition might be coming to an end soon.

We all know how Erica and Kiddwaya have all been loving up in the house right from the second week of the show. Even Kiddwaya in the spirit of love and romance has said that his love affair with the beautiful Erica won’t end in the House.

But unfortunately, Erica had asked Kiddwaya to stay away from her because he doesn’t support her publicly. And according to her, Kiddwaya allowed Wathoni to disrespect her in public.

It all started on Friday when the Housemates were having a general discussion and Erica stated she can’t and will never chase a man.

Reacting to Erica’s comment, Wathoni asked Kiddwaya if he didn’t chase any girl and Kidd replied saying he doesn’t chase girls.

Kiddwaya’s statement got Erica upset so much that she left the garden in anger.

On getting to the HoH lounge, Erica requested she and Kidd returned to being just friends after claiming the 27-year-old never supports her in public.

“What am I even doing with you? I feel very stupid for having anything to do with you in the first place. You’re being a hypocrite,” Erica said

“Wathoni’s behaviour makes me remember why I don’t like her in the first place. I know she doesn’t like me and I don’t like her.

“She tries to throw shades but she never finishes anything. She gossips a lot, she tries to assume every time and then she tries to say kinds of stuff to start a drama.

“You also added to it. If I’m with somebody I expect the person to always be on my side. You’re always trying to be safe.

“You don’t always have my back. In private you chat me but in public, you try to sit on the fence.

“Know where you want to stand and stand there, is anybody going to beat you? You need to stand for one thing. You saw that she was trying to throw shade at me and you still fell for it.”
