DSS re invites ex- CBN Deputy Governor, Mailafiya

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Dr Obadiah Mailafiya has been re-invited by the Department of State Security (DSS) for further discussions.

The Nation learnt Mailafiya is expected to be at the DSS office Jos, Plateau state capital, by 12 noon on Monday, August 17, 2020.

His lawyer, Bawa Ba Esq, confirmed this to our correspondent on phone.

Barrister Bawa told The Nation on Monday morning the invitation “was a buildup to the previous one, it is a process with security agents. It is normal for further discussion.”

On reason for fresh invitation, Bawa believed it wouldn’t be anything different from the last encounter, which he said was purely interactive.

Last Wednesday, Mailafiya honoured invitation at the DSS office Jos based on an interview he granted an Abuja- based Radio FM where he alleged a Northern Governor was Commander of Boko Haram insurgents.

Mailafiya was in the DSS premises for six hours but released unconditionally.

Efforts to speak to him on Monday morning failed.

He neither responded to calls nor replied text messages.

Police nab seven people for cloning SIM cards to empty deceased’s accounts

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a syndicate that specialises in the cloning of Subscriber Identification Module cards of prominent deceased persons.

It was gathered that the gang leader, Osita Nwafor, alias Ossy, was arrested by the decoy team of the Rapid Response Squad at the gang’s hideout after a detailed analysis of its activities.

Punch Metro learnt that Nwafor’s apprehension led to the arrest of other members of the gang namely: Nwogu Chike, Anthony Odama, Ikechukwu Nkem, James Okonkwo, Adedio Paulinus and Olufemi Ogundepo.

Punch learnt that the arrest of the suspects foiled the fraudulent transaction of N3m through a cloned SIM card.

According to a statement by the RRS, the suspects work with some bank workers in Nigeria and outside the country.

It was gathered that Chika was working on the transfer of $220,000 from a foreign bank, while Ogundepo was working on the transfer of N25m from an old generation bank in the country before they were arrested.

Nwafor stated that he recruited the gang members in 2019, adding that they worked independently.

He said, “Although I brought the team together, each member of the group has his area of specialisation. We look for potential victims and each member has his role on each of the cases.

“Once I have done my part of the deal by looking for SIMs and accounts numbers, I push them to whoever among the member has to play the next role and that is how we treat our cases and apart from this, each member of the gang also has his splinter group. Whenever they have personal jobs, they also handle on their own.

“Chike look for foreign and local accounts for money lodgements. I don’t know anything about how he does that, I simply hand over to Chike. He has his connections and they work on percentage and once they agree on the percentage when the money comes, everybody gets their cuts.

“We find obituaries of well to do members of the public, use bank insiders to determine the deceased’s account balance and clone their SIM cards for online transfers.”

Oyedepo warns FG against interfering with churches

The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Dr David Oyedepo, has advised the Federal Government to expunge the part of the newly-signed amended Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 that gives the supervising minister the power to remove the board of trustees of churches without recourse to the court.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had on August 7 signed into law, the Companies and Allied Matters Bill, 2020.

The bill, recently passed by the National Assembly, replaced the 1990 CAMA.

Oyedepo gave this advice while delivering a sermon at the Faith Tabernacle, Ota in Ogun State during the first service on of the church after Covid-19 lockdown on Sunday.

Oyedepo said, “In the document, they said the registrar-general can remove the trustees without recourse to the court. Don’t try it. This must be from somebody who woke up from the wrong side of the bed after dreaming. The person must have drafted that aspect in the bill as their custom is.

“I am 51 years old in this thing (Christianity), don’t try it. I have been with Jesus for some time and I am sent as a prophet to nations. That a minister can remove the trustees and close the accounts of the church is.

“You don’t know the strength of any man until you molest his wife. The cheapest way for a leader to lose respect is to insult the wife of his worker. He will tell you to take your job and insult you thoroughly.

“Please know that the church is the bride of Christ. We are returning home someday for the big marriage supper of the lamb. It is wisdom to quickly expunge that part that affects the religious body from that document. It is only safe to do that.

“In fact, they said they would appoint managers. So, they can appoint occultists to be managers of church affairs when we are alive. Don’t try it when this crude prophet is alive, when all the sons of the prophets are alive, don’t try it, this is a timely advice.”

Lawyer remanded for petitioning against NIS boss tenure extension

A lawyer, Daniel Makolo, has been remanded in police custody for allegedly writing a petition to the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, faulting the tenure extension granted to the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede.

A Karu Chief Magistrates’ Court presided over by Emmanuel Iyanna was said to have ordered Makolo’s remand for two weeks for alleged defamation of character following an ex parte application by the lawyer to the NIS boss, Adana Musa.

Makolo had visited the Federal Capital Territory Police Command headquarters on behalf of a client last Monday when he was arrested.

Speaking to Punch Metro from custody on Saturday, Makolo said he had been moved to four different police cells since his arrest on Monday.

He stated, “Based on my letter to the minister questioning the tenure extension granted to Babandede, he wrote a petition to the police saying I injured his reputation and the police said that was cybercrime and defamation.

“I was at the FCT command headquarters on behalf of a client to resolve a problem; we were coming out of the police headquarters when I was accosted by the police and arrested in the presence of my clients. They dragged me back into their office, seized my phones and started making trouble.

“They wanted to force me to write an incriminating statement, but I resisted. At the end of the day, they took me to SARS detention centre and the suspects in the cell physically assaulted me. I cried out and the guards came and told them I am an officer, so they allowed me to be.

“The following morning, I was taken to the CID to make my statement; I got in touch with my lawyer and tried to get him to come and witness the statement. The same lawyer, who appeared with me in the case I went to resolve at the police command, Adana Musa, was the person, who got a court order to remand me for 14 days in the first instance pending their investigation.”

Makolo, a former NIS officer, who is pursuing a PhD in law, said he was also taken to the Garki Police Station, where he was manhandled by criminals in the cell, adding that he also spent a night at the Asokoro Police Station’s cell.

He added, “The following day, I was taken to the Asokoro Police Division, where I was equally manhandled in the cell. They have been taking me every night from one police cell to another.

“Right now, I’m in the Nyanya Police Division. This is my second day in Nyanya; I don’t know whether they will still move me to another cell tonight. That is what they have been doing to break my spirit.”

Makolo, who has been engaged in a running battle with the NIS authorities, which led to his dismissal from service, explained that his lawyer, Isaac Ebikwe, had filed some processes in court, which were fixed for August 25.

“My family does not know where I am; nobody knows where I am. They didn’t allow me access to my medication; they also refused to let me see a doctor; my health has not been good,” he added.

Ebikwe faulted the remand order against his client, noting that the decision of the court to remand Makolo based on an ex parte motion was illegal and an abuse of judicial process.

But Babandede, in his reaction, said the lawyer was detained for falsely accusing him of murder and corruption.

“He is not being held for writing to the minister about the extension; he is being held for falsely accusing a senior government official of murder, threat to life and other issues. He is a dismissed employee of the NIS, who lost three times in court and resorted to blackmail,” the immigration boss stated.

Shoprite battles $10m judgment debt... barred from transferring assets

The Federal High Court in Lagos has made an order of mareva injunction stopping Shoprite Checkers (PTY) Limited from disposing of or transferring its assets out of jurisdiction over a $10m judgment debt.

Shoprite has announced its plan to exit Nigeria.

The mareva injunction made by Justice Mohammed Liman was in favour of a Nigerian firm, A.I.C. Limited, which in 2018, secured a $10m judgment against Shoprite in a breach of contract lawsuit.

According to court papers, the $10m judgment was entered in favour of A.I.C. Limited against Shoprite by Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.

Displeased with the judgment, Shoprite went on appeal but it equally lost at the Court of Appeal and has gone to the Supreme Court.

In the July 14, 2020 mareva injunction, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, Justice Liman restrained “the judgment debtor/1st respondent,” and its privies “from transferring, assigning, charging, disposing of its trademark, franchise and intellectual property in a manner that will alter, dissipate or remove these non-cash assets and other assets, including but not limited to trade receivables, trade payables, payment for purchase of merchandise, from within the jurisdiction of this honourable court.”

The judge also mandated the 2nd respondent, Retail Supermarket Nigeria Limited, “to disclose its audited financial statements for the years ending 2018 and 2019 to enable the judgment creditor/applicant determine the judgment debtor’s/respondent’s funds in its custody in order to preserve same in satisfaction of the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Appeal No: CA/L/288/2018.”

A.I.C. Limited had in 2012 sued Shoprite Checkers (PTY) Limited; and Retail Supermarket Nigeria Limited for alleged breach of contract.

The Nigerian firm said it was the one, who invited the South African retail supermarket operators to Nigeria and opened their eyes to business opportunities in the country, with a view that they would go into a joint venture.

The Nigerian firm, however, said after talks had reached an advanced stage and it had incorporated A.I.C.-Shoprite Nigeria Ltd. in the hope of a joint venture for establishment, Shoprite abandoned the agreement and went behind its back to set up its outfit in 2005.

Though Shoprite contended that it had no contract with the Nigerian firm, both the high court and the Court of Appeal said the series of exchanged correspondences between the parties confirmed that A.I.C Limited and Shoprite agreed to a joint venture.

Upholding the high court judgment, the Court of Appeal held, “There is evidence in the record that the 1st appellant allowed the respondent to search for a suitable site for the partnership project and to apply for a lease of land for the partnership project. These involved time, energy and money. The court below held that the conduct of the parties demonstrated intention to enter into a legal relation in respect of the partnership project. I agree.”

Kano court jails 13-year-old boy for 10 years over blasphemy

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has faulted the judgment of an Upper Sharia Court in Kano State sentencing a 13-year-old boy, Umar Farouq, to 10 years in prison for making derogatory statements toward Allah in an argument with a friend.

Farouq was convicted on August 10, 2020, by Aliyu Kanu, the same judge who sentenced a Musician, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, to death for blaspheming Prophet Mohammed.

Baba-Jibo Ibrahim, spokesman for Kano Region Justice Ministry, said the court handed down the death sentence as enshrined in Islamic laws based on irrefutable evidence and the convict’s admission of guilt.

The PUNCH reports that although Farouq is a minor by Nigerian law and should not have been tried as an adult, Islamic canons regard anyone who has begun puberty as an adult.

Kano, a predominantly Muslim northern Nigerian state, has Islamic Sharia courts that function alongside civil courts and introduced Sharia law in 2000.

But the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has condemned the blasphemy laws in Nigeria.

The USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan Federal Government entity established by the US Congress to monitor, analyse, and report threats to religious freedom abroad.

In a statement in reaction to the judgment, the US commission condemned the death sentence handed to Sharif-Aminu for allegedly insulting the Prophet Mohammed.

USCIRF Commissioner, Frederick Davie, stated, “It is unconscionable that Sharif-Aminu is facing a death sentence merely for expressing his beliefs artistically through music. The US Senate should work swiftly to pass Resolution 458, which calls for the global repeal of heresy, blasphemy, and apostasy laws.”

Also, the President of the African Bar Association, Mr Hannibal Uwaifo, described the verdict on Farouq as unconstitutional, calling on the Attorney General of the Federation to stop the Sharia court from making a mockery of Nigerian on the international scene.

Uwaifo said, “I call on the Attorney General of the Federation to step in and to stop this kind of sectional court from  making mockery of Nigeria. This is a country where people are stealing billions of naira and being given a pat on the back; then you say someone committed blasphemy, according to your own religion, and then you sentence him to death or sentence a teenager to 10 years’ imprisonment. I think we should stop making a laughing stock.”

In the same vein, two civil society groups have condemned the Shari’a court verdict.

Pregnant women, children not allowed in churches as they reopen in Ogun state

Pregnant women and children were on Sunday denied access to churches in some parts of Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, as they reopened for services after about four months closure.

Most of the churches visited were seen to have complied with Covid-19 protocols as they provided automated hand washing, hand sanitisers and infrared thermometers within the premises of churches.

Many churches also displayed the bold inscription; ‘No Mask No Entry’ at entrances, with officials wearing face masks and taking the temperature of worshipers.

At Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel) located at Quarry road in Abeokuta, three services were held with an impressive turn out of Christian faithful.

Security agents as well as members of the State Taskforce on COVID-19 were present in many churches to monitor compliance.

But pregnant women and children, who wanted to be part of the service, were turned back.

At St. Leo Catholic Church, Otun Abeokuta Diocese, only parishioners with face masks were allowed into the church to observe the holy mass.

Inside story of Kano slave rice factory where 126 workers were locked up in dehumanizing conditions

When the news of the alleged forced labour in a rice factory in Kano State, where 126 workers were reportedly locked up in dehumanizing conditions for three months broke out few weeks ago, the rage and bitter feeling that greeted the report was singularly directed at the owner of the company, a foreign firm.

Not a few Nigerians, at the time, expressed surprise at the effrontery of the Asian owner of the company to subject Nigerians to such debasing treatment on their own soil.

But discreet investigation by Sunday Sun has, however, revealed how highly placed individuals in the Federal Ministry of Labour, National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees, NUFBTE an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and other Nigerians in the employ of the company connived with the owner of the company to subject their fellow brothers to degrading labour practices in the company.

The company, Popular Farms and Mills Limited, located at Challawa Industrial Estate, Kano has a rich history in Nigeria’s agricultural sector with 41, 486 member-farmers as well as 65,715 hectares of rice farm area with installed capacity of 430, 000 metric tons per annum. The company, which has been operating for about 50 years in Nigeria, prides itself as one of the largest automated rice milling units in the country.

But beyond the façade of being one of the heavy weights in rice production in the country, multiple sources confided in Sunday Sun that offensive stench of degrading and dehumanising labour practices ooze out from the company. The recent discovery of workers locked up to work in the factory throughout the period of the COVID-19 lockdown could only serve as the last straw that has threatened to break the camel’s back. Acting on a tip-off from a non-governmental organisation, Global Community for Human Rights Network, the police in the state stormed the rice mill on Sunday June 21 and reportedly rescued 126 workers held hostage for three months in the mill.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna, who confirmed the incident, said that a total number of 126 workers held hostage in the factory were freed at the end of the exercise while some officials of the company were arrested.

Haruna added that investigation had commenced on the matter. Findings by Sunday Sun further revealed how the workers in the factory were coerced to remain in the factory throughout the period without being allowed to go home to see their family members.

One of the workers who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Sunday Sun that the management of the company made life miserable for them in the factory throughout the period. “When the lockdown began, the management of the company announced to us that we would have to stay behind to work in the factory because of the restrictions on movement and promised to pay us for overtime. The impression they gave us was that the lockdown would not exceed two weeks. So, we all agreed to stay behind. We worked both day and night with little or no time to rest. They brought in a food vendor who cooked and sold us food throughout the period,” he said.

The source, however, revealed that when the lockdown was stretching into months, some of them became agitated about the whole arrangement just as their disturbed family members paid endless visits to the company without being allowed to see them.

“But when the management discovered we were getting agitated, they changed their tactic and started threatening us with dismissal. The most annoying part of it is that they did not allow us to see our family members while some of us who fell sick during the period were denied any medical care. As this was going on, some people whose relations were locked up in the factory started making contacts with those they thought could help secure our release until they got the right connection,” he revealed.

Asked what the stance of the labour union leaders in the company was while their ordeal lasted, he said that every attempt by the workers in the company to form or belong to a union in the past was thwarted by the management of the company.

According to him, the management knew that if they allowed us to belong to a union all their anti-labour practices in the company would be resisted. Initially we were adamant in forming the union, but when the management saw our determination they came down with the hammers and sacked the vocal ones among us. Since them nobody dared to raise the issue of unionism in the company again.

When Sunday Sun got in contact with one of the sacked workers, Mr. Babatunde Shuaib, he confirmed the allegation, saying: “I was one of the workers sacked then. We were eight or nine in number then. It is now over three years and we are yet to get a dime from the company in terms of severance package. When we were leaving Kano, we handed over the whole issues to one Comrade Usman, he is one of the Food and Beverage union leaders. But we are yet to get anything from him.”

Sunday Sun gathered that more than 80 per cent of the workers in the company are casual workers with some having spent more than five years in the position. While the casual workers are paid between N5, 000 and N7, 000 per week, those who are lucky to have been offered regular employment as staff earn between N30, 000 and N40, 000, a practice which runs contrary to Section 7 (1) of the Nigerian Labour Act which stipulates that a worker should not be employed for more than three months without regularization of such employment.

The state council of labour unions, particularly the National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees, NUFBTE, also came under severe criticism for failing to come to the aid of the workers in the company after its management unleashed terror on some of them for daring to become members of the union in the past.

But the Secretary, Kano State Council of NUFBTE, Comrade Usman Lawal, in an interview, told our correspondent that the state council of NUFBTE was still making efforts to get the company unionized when the news of the alleged forced labour by the company broke out few weeks ago.

According to Lawal, “the news of workers who were locked up in the factory came to us as a rude shock. Before then, we have been making efforts to unionize the company for over three years now, but the leadership of the company has been frustrating our efforts. In fact, we are at loggerheads with the company as I speak to you over this issue. The Nigeria Labour Union, Kano State Council at a point stepped into the matter and set up a committee of unionization and anti-casualisation of workers under the leader of veteran, Comrade Wada Waziri. He is late now. When we got to the company, the management of the company cooperated with us and we informed them about our mission.

“Later, workers from the company visited our office to obtain their consent forms to join our union. We later wrote to the management of the company informing them about the decision of the workers to join the union. But immediately this happened they started intimidating the workers, telling them to renounce their membership of the union. What we heard subsequently was that the company terminated the appointments of all their branch managers on the account of fraternising with our union.”

Lawal further revealed that all efforts to get the company reverse its decision to terminate the appointments of the affected officers and to get the company unionised were rebuffed.

“It was not until we involved the Controller of Labour in the Kano State Ministry of Labour and the National leadership of NUFBTE sometime in March, that the leadership of the company began to show some signs of cooperation with us. Had the company been unionized, the issue of forced labour or slavery would not have arisen.” Lawal said.

But another highly placed source close to the company confided in sun correspondent that the office of the Controller of Labour, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Kano, and a particular national executive member of NUFBTE are part of the treachery and the grand conspiracy that have continued to rob the workers in the company of the opportunity to form a union in the company.

“Yes, there was a serious effort to set up a workers’ union under the umbrella of the National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees, but the leadership of the company found willing allies in the Controller of Labour in Kano and a particular exco member of the national body of NUFBTE to frustrate the efforts of forming a union in the company. These are Nigerians who are saddled with the responsibility of fighting for the welfare of the workers in the country, unfortunately, the same set of people are the ones frustrating the efforts of the workers and other stakeholders that are desirous of having a workers’ union in the company. Unless there is a union on ground in that company, the various infractions against the rights of workers in that company will continue unabated. In 2017, some of the senior workers who showed interest in forming the union were sacked without being paid their severance benefits,” the source said.

But while all efforts to get the reaction of the Controller of Labour in Kano proved abortive as he refused to speak on phone with our correspondent from Lagos and claimed to be out of town when Sunday Sun correspondent visited his office in Kano, the Deputy General Secretary of NUFBTE, Mike Olanrewaju, denied any form of complicity by the union in the plights of the workers in the company.

Olarenwaju confirmed the position of the state chapter of the union which accused the Indian owners of the company of frustrating efforts to unionize the company.

“We have been battling with them for long over three years, but the management has bluntly refused us to come in,” he said.

Olanrewaju said that the union having been frustrated by the management anti-labour posture has called for the intervention of the Federal Government through the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

He said: “The union has written to the Minister informing him about the refusal of the company denying us to inaugurate our members in the company. We sent the letter to the Minister early this year and if not for the COVID-19 pandemic, perhaps we would have been able to complete the procedure.”

The Deputy General Secretary said anyone connecting the union to the inability of the workers to be unionised was only trying to blackmail the organisation, maintaining that the union has made use of all options available to labour, but with no success.

Attempts by Sunday Sun to get the reaction of the Managing Director of the company, Mr. Amit Kumar were rebuffed as he refused to pick calls to his mobile line while response of the SMS sent to his phone was still being awaited as at press time.

“He further advice angry youths/mobs from taking laws into their hands by carrying out jungle justice when suspected criminals are arrested, but such suspect(s) should be handed over to the Police. The photograph of Sunday Shodipe ‘m’ 19 years old is hereby attached for ease of identification,” the statement concluded.

Vanguard recalled that, upon Shodipe’s escape from the police custody, residents of Ori-Oke Olurunkole in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state last Friday morning, woke up to the heart-aching news of a middel-aged woman, Mrs Olufunmilayo, who was again reportedly macheted to death, suspecting he (Shodipe) was the one that carried out the dastardly act.

The development, however, infuriated youths in the area to embark on a violent protest, which led to a serious attack on the police.

While reacting to the unfortunate incident, the Caretaker Chairman of Akinyele Local Government, Mr. Taoreed Jimoh, shed light to what led to the protest by the angry youths.

According to him: “We heard that the woman was macheted, she was rescued immediately and taken to UCH, so we heard the report that she died this morning.”

“That was what prompted residents to embark on a mass protest, unfortunately, the peaceful protest was hijacked by hoodlums. The hoodlums went to the extent of pelting security operatives with stones and other objects, but with the help of God, peace is gradually returning to the area and it is under control.”

“I have called Deputy Commissioner of Police on Operations and he has deployed more officers to the area, also, I called the Area Commander and Federal SARS and other security operatives and local security agents such as Soludero and others had arrived the area to calm the situation. The Alakinyele of Akinyele Oba James Odeniran was also on ground to rescue few police officers that the hoodlums manhandled.”

“The killing was carried out by suspected ritualists. Residents suspected a ritualist who was reportedly arrested by the police but allegedly escaped from their custody, he was seen in Akinyele two days ago and yesterday, the residents had to raise alarm and people are suspecting he was the one that carried out the dastardly act,” he hinted.

BBNaija: Neo gives details of fight with Vee

Big Brother Naija, BBNaija 2020 housemate, Neo has explained the reason for the fight with his lover, Vee.

Vee on Saturday night had an argument with Neo.

There were suspicions that the lovers were not in good terms due to Neo’s newfound bond with Kaisha.

However, Neo in a conversation with Laycon and Kiddwaya said the fight started after Vee got angry that he ate her soup without her.

She also got angry after Neo said ‘Fuck off’ at her in the kitchen in front of other housemates.

Neo said: “She asked me why I ate the soup; that’s how the fight started. She should not be angry I ate the food alone, for ordinary plate of Okro you are doing all this rubbish.

“I just thought to myself that what will she do when we are in the real world. Also, before the party, I asked let’s take pictures, she ignored me.

“I thought we were cool at the party after we danced but then I asked her for a toast, and she said no, making reference to the soup earlier in the day.

“I got angry and said ‘Fuck off,” now she is capitalizing on the fact that I disrespected her.

“I can sacrifice for my girl but just this small thing, and she’s angry at me. I try to humble myself before you but don’t think I don’t have sense.

“I try to make you feel special in every single way I can. I show how special Vee is to me in public and private but then, one tiny thing, you turn to something else, that thing pisses me off.”

Disney Channel confirms first ever bis£xual character in The Owl House

Disney Channel’s The Owl House has confirmed it will be the first show on the channel ever to feature a bis£xual leading character after initially being told it was off limits.

Creator Dana Terrace took to Twitter to confirm that the magical series’ latest episode was the start of something special for not just the show, but for the House of Mouse as a whole.

In Enchanting Grom Fright, character Amity revealed that she wanted to ask her best friend, leading lady Luz Noceda, to prom kickstarting a relationship storyline.

Dana, who is also bisexual, spoke out about the decision and its importance for LGBTQ representation, thanking the studio executives for being open to the idea for the first time ever.

‘When I was first developing Owl House I always wanted to do a prom episode to make up for my own experiences,’ she wrote.

‘Back then PROM was an anagram for “Perennial Ritual Offering Maiden”. I’m so INCREDIBLY grateful for the crew working to make this episode so badass.’

‘In dev I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast. I’m a horrible liar so sneaking it in would’ve been hard haha,’ she continued.

‘When we were greenlit I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could NOT represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the Channel.

‘I’m bi! I want to write a bi character, dammit!

‘Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am VERY supported by current Disney leadership. (Thank you @NashRiskin and team!) Not to mention the amazingness of this crew.’

hh

‘Representation matters! Always fight to make what YOU want to see!,’ Dana concluded. ‘As OH continues I can’t wait to explore things that are important to me and my crew.

‘Looking forward to the next chapter… Which is next week in WING IT LIKE WITCHES! Thank you for watching! #TheOwlHouse’

The Disney Channel’s decision comes after Christian activism group One Million Moms declared The Owl House ‘demonic’ and tried to get it pulled off air for ‘making light of hell and promoting witchcraft’.

But kids TV is continuing to pave the way for all kinds of representation of an early age, with CBBC airing a blooming relationship in The Next Step that saw two teen girls kiss.

Police warns the public against ‘dangerous’ ecstasy Trump-shaped tablet

The public are being warned about a dangerously high-strength batch of ecstasy pills shaped like Donald Trump.

Bedfordshire Police raised concerns about the orange tablets which are made to look like the US President as they arrested a man in his 30s from Luton on suspicion of supplying them.

Detective Sergeant Ryan Barnes explained: ‘Criminals are constantly finding new ways to sell their drugs and make them more appealing.

‘We have seen MDMA tablets created to look like a number of culturally popular items before and a recent example of this is the “Donald Trumps”. The “Donald Trumps” are dangerous tablets that contain extremely high levels of MDMA and could put anyone taking these in serious harm.’

He continued: ‘If you come across these or any other type of drug, please do not take them for your own safety, as you can never be sure what these pills contain.’

Police said signs of a drug overdose include overheating, dehydration, rapid heart rate, extreme agitation or being disorientated and experiencing vivid hallucinations, strange body sensations like pins and needles, muscle tension and uncontrollable reflexes and seizures.

The force pointed people towards the website Talk to Frank for more information about drugs.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police online or by calling 101.

11 suspected cultists arrested during initiation

The Cross River Police Command has arrested 11 persons during an initiation into a cult at Bishop Moynag Avenue, State Housing, Calabar.

The command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, said in a statement in Calabar on Sunday that the suspects were nine men and two women.

He said that the suspects were arrested on Aug. 14 through “human and tactical intelligence information” deployed by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdulkadir Jimoh.

Ugbo said that the suspects were arrested by operatives from the Special Anti Robbery Squad and officers from the Federal Housing Police Division.

“On Aug. 14 2020, a team of SARS operatives and men from the Federal Housing Police Division through intelligence from the Commissioner of Police swung into action and arrested 11 suspected cultists during initiation.

“Items recovered from them include talking drum, wooden gung, two kegs of concoction and a bottle of Gordon drink.

“The suspects confessed to the crime. Investigation is still ongoing to unravel other cult members.

“To this, the Commissioner of Police once again warned all members of any cult groups or anyone having intention to engage in any cult-related activities to desist from such”.

The police command said its “Operation Murky Waters” was still ongoing and was determined to neutralise all illegal activities and those behind them.

Ugbo, however, enjoined peace-loving residents of Cross River to go about their normal businesses without fear of any kind.

Another Black man Roosevelt Lewis killed by White cop

Another white cop has killed a black man, Julian Edward Roosevelt Lewis in the state of Georgia, United States.

The killer Georgia state trooper was arrested and charged with murder on Friday after he fatally shot the 60-year-old man who allegedly tried to flee during a rural traffic stop.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced that Jacob Gordon Thompson, 27, was booked on felony murder and aggravated assault charges stemming from the Aug. 7 death of Roosevelt Lewis.

An attorney for Lewis’s family told The Associated Press that Thompson initiated the traffic stop in Screven County over a burned-out tail light, shooting Lewis immediately after the trooper had forced his car into a ditch.

“Mr. Lewis never got out of the vehicle and the investigation will show that, mere seconds after the crash, he was shot to death, shot in the face and killed,” attorney Francys Johnson said.

Johnson told the AP that the GBI disclosed that information to the family, but the agency did not include those details in its statement on the trooper’s arrest.

The Rev. James Woodall, president of the Georgia NAACP, decried the incident as a case of racial profiling and the latest example of a white law enforcement officer killing a Black man.

“No one should have to bury a loved one simply because of a busted tail light,” Woodall said, saying that the trooper’s arrest was not cause for celebration.

“We are not necessarily happy right now. Yes, the man was arrested, but we’re done dying.”

The initial press release following the incident states that Lewis’s car did not stop and that Thompson initiated a brief chase down several county roads.

The agency said the trooper initiated a precision intervention technique (PIT) that made the car come to a stop in a ditch.

The GBI did not provide any other details about the altercation, stating only that the trooper fired one round that struck Lewis, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper was not injured.

In an incident report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Thompson wrote that he shot Lewis in the forehead because he thought Lewis was going to run him over.

“At some point, I heard the engine on the violator’s vehicle revving at a high rate of speed,” he wrote in the report.

“I saw him wrenching the steering wheel in an aggressive back and forth manner towards me and my patrol vehicle. It appeared to me that the violator was trying to use his vehicle to injure me. Being in fear for my life and safety, I discharged my weapon once.”

Johnson, the Lewis family’s attorney, argued that PIT maneuvers are typically used when an officer needs to push a vehicle off the road because there is a risk to public safety and that it was unnecessary to run Lewis’s car into the ditch on a rural dirt road.

The attorney said the U.S. Department of Justice has approved his request for a federal civil rights investigation.

“We got lots of messages from people in the community that the habit of ex-trooper Thompson was to racially profile and harass Black and brown people on the highway,” Johnson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “This was not shocking to them that this happened.”
