COVID-19: South Korean pastor, church members test positive, thousands at risk

Thousands of members of a Protestant church linked to a coronavirus cluster in Seoul have been asked to quarantine, South Korean authorities said Monday, as they accused the group’s firebrand conservative leader who has reportedly tested positive of obstruction.

The country’s “trace, test and treat” approach has been held up as a global model in how to curb the virus, but it is now battling several clusters linked to religious groups.

Over the weekend the capital and neighbouring Gyeonggi province between them home to nearly half the population banned all religious gatherings and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel after a burst of new cases sparked fears of a major second wave.

South Korea reported 197 new infections on Monday, taking its total to 15,515, its fourth consecutive day of triple-digit increases after several weeks with numbers generally in the 30s and 40s.

The largest current cluster is centred on the Sarang Jeil Church in Seoul, headed by Jun Kwang-hun, a controversial conservative pastor who is a leading figure in protests against President Moon Jae-in.

A total of 315 cases linked to the church had been confirmed by the end of the weekend, officials said Monday, making it one of the biggest clusters so far, and around 3,400 members of the congregation had been asked to quarantine.

Around one in six of the church members tested so far had been positive, “requiring rapid testing and isolation,” said vice health minister Kim Gang-lip.

But a list of members provided by the church was “inaccurate,” he said, making the testing and isolation procedure “very difficult.”

The situation amounted to an “early stage of a large-scale outbreak,” said Jung Eun-kyeong, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“If the outbreak is not controlled right now, the number of confirmed cases will increase exponentially, leading to collapse of the medical system and enormous economic damage,” she said.

Election Tribunal sacks Bayelsa Governor, Duoye Diri

The Bayelsa State Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has annulled the election of Duoye Diri, governor of Bayelsa State.

The election was nullified based on a petition by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party, which argued that it was unlawfully excluded from participating in the election.

Diri, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, was sworn in as governor after the Supreme Court sacked David Lyon as governor-elect 24 hours before his inauguration.

In a majority judgment delivered by Justice Yunusa Musa in the petition, the tribunal held that the Independent National Electoral Commission unlawfully excluded ANDP from the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

It, therefore, ordered INEC to conduct a fresh governorship election in Bayelsa State within 90 days.

My husband’s death is natural, not of COVID-19, late Lanre Razak wife cries out

Mrs Jumoke Razak, the wife of late APC chieftain, Lanre Razak, says her husband did not die of COVID-19 pandemic.

Razak told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Epe, that her husband’s death was natural as he had been sick for some time.

She said the way the husband died showed that it was time for him to answer the call of his creator.

“Although, my husband was sick but he was responding to treatment and looking healthy to recover, but suddenly, death cut up with him.

“I received a call from the hospital where my husband was treated that he gave up on Aug. 15.

“From God we come and to him we shall all return, God knows best,’’ she told NAN.

The widow disclosed that her husband was on admission at Reddington hospital in Lagos and that he was not isolated.

“He was receiving treatment as normal sick patient and not as COVID-19 patient.

“The public should desist from spreading rumour of weather my husband died of COVID-19 or not.

“I am saying emphatically that my husband, Lanre Razak, did not died of COVID-19.

“Anybody can be sick and be treated fine while some will be sick and pass to eternity.

“Therefore, it is God’s time that He took my husband.

“May Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him Aljanat Firdaus,’’ she prayed.

NAN reports that the APC Chieftain dead on Aug. 15 and was buried same day according to Islamic rites.

Man accuses Bauchi DPO of breaking his legs, torturing two of his friends to death over chicken

Abdulwahab Bello, a-30-year-old man, has alleged that a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Twon Township Police Station, whose name was not given, tortured two of his friends to death with a pistol while the said officer also broke two of his legs.

While addressing pressmen at the NUJ Secretariat with his father and a human rights group, PIDI-NIGERIA, Bello was supported with a pillow on a tricycle to narrate his ordeal. He said that the incident occurred some days ago when they were arrested by the police over theft of chicken belonging to a retired police officer.

The victim explained that two of his friends – Ibrahim Kapala and Ibrahim Babangida – asked of where the chickens could be sold while he told them to go to Muda Lawal Market. “I didn’t know that they were stolen chickens,” he added.

He said shortly after, he was arrested with his two friends and taken to the police station where the buyer of the chicken was also arrested. The matter was settled and they were asked to pay for the stolen chicken.

“They said we should pay the money for the two chicken and my father brought the N4,000 to them. The DPO told my father to go that they will release me. We came out and he asked us to go to the back of the police station, which we did. He asked us to lie on the ground with our stomachs and then ordered that the first person who died, Ibrahim Kapala, should be tied.

“When the policemen tied him, the DPO went into his office and brought out a pistol. He started hitting Ibrahim with it and broke his right leg and then broke his left leg. Some of the policemen there didn’t say a word.

“While he was beating him, he was saying that ‘today, stealing of chicken has ended’ and he continued beating him until he fainted. After he fainted, he started hitting him with his shoe even though he was motionless.

“The DPO said to him, ‘are you dead? It is even better that you have died’ and he ordered that the second person be brought to him. Immediately he was brought, he descended on him also and broke his leg and then he took that piston and started hitting him with it on his chest and his back, he too fainted.”

Abdulwahab said that while his friends were being beaten, he knew the DPO would do the same thing to him and he had concluded that he was dead.

He said: “My thought was that they would kill me too because my friend was lying down there motionless and he was telling him to die. So, I just gave up and was waiting for my time.”

He denied allegations by the police that they were serial thieves who had been terrorising residents of the area.

Father of the victim, Alhaji Bello Muhktar, who spoke with journalists, accused the DPO of taking the laws into his hands. He, therefore, called on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to investigate the matter and ensure that the DPO who allegedly murdered the two young men and inflicted serious life-threatening injuries on his son be brought to book.

“For the police to do this kind of thing is terrible. When a policeman takes the law into his hands and kills your son, tomorrow, if you see him, what would you do to him? You too might take the laws into your hands. Just as he killed your son, you will also want to do the same to him. That means we are descending into a banana republic.

“Because of this, I am pleading with the Inspector General of Police to take action on this matter and ensure justice is done. What I have spent so far in treating him is more than N50,000. This has not been easy at all and one of his sisters has been helpful in footing his medical bills.”

Girl, 13, who claimed boy, 10, was unborn baby's father gives birth

A Russian schoolgirl who claimed a ten-year-old boy was the father of her unborn child has given birth to a daughter.

Darya Sudnishnikova was 13-years-old when she made headlines insisting she had been made pregnant by her prepubescent boyfriend Ivan.

Yesterday, she revealed to her 350,000-plus followers that she went through a “tough” delivery with the 8lbs baby.

She posted: "That's it, I gave birth to a girl at 10 am.

“It was tough, I'll tell you everything later, I'm having a rest now."

The schoolgirl, who gained followers posting updates of her pregnancy on social media, gave birth in a perinatal clinic in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia.

Prior to the birth Darya went on prime time TV in Russia where she claimed that Ivan was the dad.

He backed up her story and remains her boyfriend.

Later she said she had been r3ped in her hometown Zheleznogorsk by a 16-year-old boy.

She told how she said Ivan was the father because she was too embarrassed to admit to the r3pe.

Police are investigating the case and expected to take a DNA sample from the newborn girl.

Ivan, now 11, was not allowed to be present with her at the birth.

Before welcoming the newborn to the world she posted: “He does not live with me, he stays overnight sometimes.

“At 16, he will take over the fatherhood, but it depends on how everything goes on between us.”

8 benefits of lime water for health and weight loss

This is for people that want to lose weight and have healthier, younger looking skin.. Welcome! Smiles...

Lime water benefits

The human body is about 60 percent water, so it comes as no surprise that water is important to your health. Water flushes toxins from the body, prevents dehydration, and keeps you energized.

It’s essential to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day, including water.

If you don’t like the taste of plain water, you may prefer juices and teas. These beverages are often sweetened and contain more calories though, so water is ideal.

If you can’t drink water by itself, squeezing a little lime juice into the glass can make the beverage tolerable. You’ll also enjoy the nutritious benefits of lime.

Lime, a type of citrus fruit, is an excellent source of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect your body by preventing or stopping damage caused by free radicals, or chemicals that harm cells.

Limes are also a good source of:

potassium

vitamins A, B, C, and D

calcium

magnesium

Whether you’re looking to improve your health or maintain your weight, here are a few benefits of adding a splash of lime to your water.

1. Rejuvenates skin

Several skin care products claim to promote healthier, younger looking skin. But you don’t have to spend money on expensive products to improve the smoothness and appearance of your skin.

Limes contain vitamin C and flavonoids, the antioxidants that strengthen collagen. Drinking lime water can hydrate and rejuvenate your skin. Vitamin C and flavonoids are also found in some topical skin care products.

It’s not recommended that you put lime juice directly on your skin since sun exposure after application can result in phytophotodermatitis, or a painful lime burn.

2. Improves digestion

Drinking lime water improves digestion. Limes are acidic and they help saliva break down food for better digestion. Additionally, flavonoids in limes stimulate secretion of digestive juices.

If you experience constipation, the acidity of limes can clear the excretory system and stimulate bowel activity.

And if you deal with frequent heartburn or acid reflux, drinking a glass of warm water with 2 teaspoons of lime juice about 30 minutes before meals may help prevent reflux symptoms.

3. Fights infections

Your risk of an infection is higher during cold and flu season. If you want to stay healthy, sip on lime juice throughout the day.

The vitamin C and antioxidants in limes can strengthen your immune system and help your body fight off infections such as the cold and flu virus. It may also shorten the duration of an illness.

4. Helps with weight loss

Who doesn’t want to maintain a healthy weight? Unfortunately, losing weight is easier said than done.

Another benefit of lime water is that it helps you manage your weight. Citric acids can boost metabolism, helping you burn more calories and store less fat.

Regular physical activity and portion control are important to losing excess pounds and weight control. Therefore, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week, and make half of each meal fruits and vegetables.

To get your day off to a good start and rev your metabolism, drink a glass of lime water in the morning, or suck on a lime wedge before meals.

5. Lowers blood sugar

As an excellent source of vitamin C, limes can be helpful for people with diabetes.

Limes have a low glycemic index and help regulate how your body absorbs sugar into the bloodstream. As a result, you may experience fewer blood sugar spikes.

6. Reduces heart disease

Limes are a good source of magnesium and potassium, which promote heart health.

Potassium can naturally lower blood pressure and improve blood circulation, which reduces your risk of a heart attack and stroke.

Research is ongoing on lime compounds called limonins that may be able to reduce cholesterol levels. High blood pressure when combined with high cholesterol can harden and narrow blood vessels. They also raise the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart disease.

7. Prevents cancer

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, and it can develop in different parts of the body including the breasts, lungs, and kidneys.

Drinking lime water may reduce your risk of developing cancer and help you fight the disease. The antioxidant properties in limes promote healthy cell growth and improve the function of your immune system.

8. Reduces inflammation

Arthritis, gout, and other joint problems are all caused by inflammation. Vitamin C can reduce the level of inflammation in your body, so adding lime juice to water can relieve symptoms of arthritis and similar conditions that cause joint pain and stiffness.

A studyTrusted Source reported that those who consumed the least amount of vitamin C were more than three times as likely to develop arthritis.

Limes can also reduce uric acid levels. Uric acid is a waste product the body produces when breaking down foods that contain purines, like meat, liver, mushrooms, and dried beans. High levels of uric acid can cause gout.

Lagos begins massive demolition of illegal structures in Lekki

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has said it would begin demolition of illegal structures in Lekki area of Lagos on Wednesday.

Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi disclosed that all illegal structures and shanties encroaching on ‘Idera Land Scheme’, Ibeju Lekki would be demolished on Wednesday, 19th of August, 2020 after the expiration of the 7 days ‘Removal Order’ served by the agency.

Egbeyemi disclosed further that the government had observed with dismay the massive encroachment by individuals, private estate developers and land speculators on lands using them to defraud innocent members of public into purchasing parcels of land within government acquisition areas across the State, particularly around Ibeju-Lekki corridor.

He implored Lagosians who are interested in purchasing lands in the State, to first verify the land records at the State Land Registry or Surveyor General’s Office where millions of land documents are stored in the ‘Electronic Data Management System (EDMS)’ consisting details of documented lands and properties in Lagos in order not to be swindled by land speculators.

“All illegal structures and buildings constructed on State land by person, companies or institutions without valid titles from the Government across the State would be removed,” he added.

The Chairman also warned miscreants, illegal mechanics, food vendors and owners of illegal shanties within Apapa Tin Can Island Park to vacate within seven days as the entire area is set to be redeveloped and given a new look in line with the T.H.E.M.E agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led in transforming the State into a functional and efficient model Mega-City.

Abinader sworn in as Dominican Republic president

The Dominican Republic on Sunday sworn in Luis Abinader as the new president ending 16 years of rule by the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).

The candidate of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) convincingly defeated the PLD candidate, former public works and communications minister Gonzalo Castillo, in the July poll.

The 52-year-old entrepreneur had previously lost a 2016 bid for the presidency and has no previous experience in public office.

He campaigned on promises of modernisation, fighting corruption and crime as well as creating jobs.

“We are living one of the most difficult moments of our history,” Abinader said in his inaugural speech in Santo Domingo, which was attended by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as he said he would lead a government of “unlimited dialogue.”

The elections were described as the first in Latin America since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, which overshadowed campaigning and the vote itself.

Abinader, who at one point tested positive for the coronavirus, had focused on promises to revive the economy during the campaign.

He replaces Danilo Medina, whom the constitution barred from seeking a third term and who presided over high economic growth rates – an average of more than 6 percent annually between 2014 and 2018 – before the pandemic hit.

However, the government’s popularity was dented by corruption allegations, internal divisions within the PLD, and Medina’s previous attempts to seek an unconstitutional third term in office.

The country of 11 million people, which shares Hispaniola island with Haiti, has confirmed more than 86,000 novel coronavirus cases and more than 1,450 deaths.

“Government, through the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, will ensure that all these tertiary institutions are disinfected.

“Universities will be equipped with necessary personal protective equipment and those with their own hospitals and clinics will have isolation centres to deal with positive cases,” Akufo-Addo added.

The president said there will be no mass gatherings, sporting activities or religious activities on campus.

Video: Melania Trump pulls her hand away from Donald Trump's as they step off Air Force One

A video has shown Melania Trump appearing to refuse to hold President Trump's hand as they stepped off Air Force One.

Footage, which has been widely shared online, shows the First Lady, 50, navigating the steps from the presidential aircraft in high heels while trying to hold her dress down in windy conditions.

However, many on social suggested she was giving her 74-year-old husband the cold shoulder as she moved her arm away when he tried to grab hold of it.

The US president appeared to make a second attempt before finally placing his right hand on her lower back.

Twitter users had mixed opinions on the couple's body language, with one person writing: "Nope. She doesn't want him touching her."

Another said: "Or she's trying to keep her dress down from wind. But you keep doing you."

The couple, who were travelling with their 14-year-old son, Barron, had arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Washington DC after flying in from New Jersey.

DSS re invites ex- CBN Deputy Governor, Mailafiya

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Dr Obadiah Mailafiya has been re-invited by the Department of State Security (DSS) for further discussions.

The Nation learnt Mailafiya is expected to be at the DSS office Jos, Plateau state capital, by 12 noon on Monday, August 17, 2020.

His lawyer, Bawa Ba Esq, confirmed this to our correspondent on phone.

Barrister Bawa told The Nation on Monday morning the invitation “was a buildup to the previous one, it is a process with security agents. It is normal for further discussion.”

On reason for fresh invitation, Bawa believed it wouldn’t be anything different from the last encounter, which he said was purely interactive.

Last Wednesday, Mailafiya honoured invitation at the DSS office Jos based on an interview he granted an Abuja- based Radio FM where he alleged a Northern Governor was Commander of Boko Haram insurgents.

Mailafiya was in the DSS premises for six hours but released unconditionally.

Efforts to speak to him on Monday morning failed.

He neither responded to calls nor replied text messages.

Police nab seven people for cloning SIM cards to empty deceased’s accounts

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a syndicate that specialises in the cloning of Subscriber Identification Module cards of prominent deceased persons.

It was gathered that the gang leader, Osita Nwafor, alias Ossy, was arrested by the decoy team of the Rapid Response Squad at the gang’s hideout after a detailed analysis of its activities.

Punch Metro learnt that Nwafor’s apprehension led to the arrest of other members of the gang namely: Nwogu Chike, Anthony Odama, Ikechukwu Nkem, James Okonkwo, Adedio Paulinus and Olufemi Ogundepo.

Punch learnt that the arrest of the suspects foiled the fraudulent transaction of N3m through a cloned SIM card.

According to a statement by the RRS, the suspects work with some bank workers in Nigeria and outside the country.

It was gathered that Chika was working on the transfer of $220,000 from a foreign bank, while Ogundepo was working on the transfer of N25m from an old generation bank in the country before they were arrested.

Nwafor stated that he recruited the gang members in 2019, adding that they worked independently.

He said, “Although I brought the team together, each member of the group has his area of specialisation. We look for potential victims and each member has his role on each of the cases.

“Once I have done my part of the deal by looking for SIMs and accounts numbers, I push them to whoever among the member has to play the next role and that is how we treat our cases and apart from this, each member of the gang also has his splinter group. Whenever they have personal jobs, they also handle on their own.

“Chike look for foreign and local accounts for money lodgements. I don’t know anything about how he does that, I simply hand over to Chike. He has his connections and they work on percentage and once they agree on the percentage when the money comes, everybody gets their cuts.

“We find obituaries of well to do members of the public, use bank insiders to determine the deceased’s account balance and clone their SIM cards for online transfers.”

Oyedepo warns FG against interfering with churches

The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Dr David Oyedepo, has advised the Federal Government to expunge the part of the newly-signed amended Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 that gives the supervising minister the power to remove the board of trustees of churches without recourse to the court.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had on August 7 signed into law, the Companies and Allied Matters Bill, 2020.

The bill, recently passed by the National Assembly, replaced the 1990 CAMA.

Oyedepo gave this advice while delivering a sermon at the Faith Tabernacle, Ota in Ogun State during the first service on of the church after Covid-19 lockdown on Sunday.

Oyedepo said, “In the document, they said the registrar-general can remove the trustees without recourse to the court. Don’t try it. This must be from somebody who woke up from the wrong side of the bed after dreaming. The person must have drafted that aspect in the bill as their custom is.

“I am 51 years old in this thing (Christianity), don’t try it. I have been with Jesus for some time and I am sent as a prophet to nations. That a minister can remove the trustees and close the accounts of the church is.

“You don’t know the strength of any man until you molest his wife. The cheapest way for a leader to lose respect is to insult the wife of his worker. He will tell you to take your job and insult you thoroughly.

“Please know that the church is the bride of Christ. We are returning home someday for the big marriage supper of the lamb. It is wisdom to quickly expunge that part that affects the religious body from that document. It is only safe to do that.

“In fact, they said they would appoint managers. So, they can appoint occultists to be managers of church affairs when we are alive. Don’t try it when this crude prophet is alive, when all the sons of the prophets are alive, don’t try it, this is a timely advice.”

Lawyer remanded for petitioning against NIS boss tenure extension

A lawyer, Daniel Makolo, has been remanded in police custody for allegedly writing a petition to the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, faulting the tenure extension granted to the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede.

A Karu Chief Magistrates’ Court presided over by Emmanuel Iyanna was said to have ordered Makolo’s remand for two weeks for alleged defamation of character following an ex parte application by the lawyer to the NIS boss, Adana Musa.

Makolo had visited the Federal Capital Territory Police Command headquarters on behalf of a client last Monday when he was arrested.

Speaking to Punch Metro from custody on Saturday, Makolo said he had been moved to four different police cells since his arrest on Monday.

He stated, “Based on my letter to the minister questioning the tenure extension granted to Babandede, he wrote a petition to the police saying I injured his reputation and the police said that was cybercrime and defamation.

“I was at the FCT command headquarters on behalf of a client to resolve a problem; we were coming out of the police headquarters when I was accosted by the police and arrested in the presence of my clients. They dragged me back into their office, seized my phones and started making trouble.

“They wanted to force me to write an incriminating statement, but I resisted. At the end of the day, they took me to SARS detention centre and the suspects in the cell physically assaulted me. I cried out and the guards came and told them I am an officer, so they allowed me to be.

“The following morning, I was taken to the CID to make my statement; I got in touch with my lawyer and tried to get him to come and witness the statement. The same lawyer, who appeared with me in the case I went to resolve at the police command, Adana Musa, was the person, who got a court order to remand me for 14 days in the first instance pending their investigation.”

Makolo, a former NIS officer, who is pursuing a PhD in law, said he was also taken to the Garki Police Station, where he was manhandled by criminals in the cell, adding that he also spent a night at the Asokoro Police Station’s cell.

He added, “The following day, I was taken to the Asokoro Police Division, where I was equally manhandled in the cell. They have been taking me every night from one police cell to another.

“Right now, I’m in the Nyanya Police Division. This is my second day in Nyanya; I don’t know whether they will still move me to another cell tonight. That is what they have been doing to break my spirit.”

Makolo, who has been engaged in a running battle with the NIS authorities, which led to his dismissal from service, explained that his lawyer, Isaac Ebikwe, had filed some processes in court, which were fixed for August 25.

“My family does not know where I am; nobody knows where I am. They didn’t allow me access to my medication; they also refused to let me see a doctor; my health has not been good,” he added.

Ebikwe faulted the remand order against his client, noting that the decision of the court to remand Makolo based on an ex parte motion was illegal and an abuse of judicial process.

But Babandede, in his reaction, said the lawyer was detained for falsely accusing him of murder and corruption.

“He is not being held for writing to the minister about the extension; he is being held for falsely accusing a senior government official of murder, threat to life and other issues. He is a dismissed employee of the NIS, who lost three times in court and resorted to blackmail,” the immigration boss stated.
