Manchester attack: Court jails suicide bomber’s brother for life

The brother of a suicide bomber who killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, northwest England, in 2017 was on Thursday jailed for life.

Judge Jeremy Baker said Hashem Abedi, who was convicted in March of murder, attempted murder and conspiring to cause explosions, would spend a minimum of 55 years in prison.

Abedi, 23, refused to attend the two-day hearing at the Central Criminal Court in London, which saw emotional statements from families of victims of the May 22, 2017 attack.

Judge Baker said that even though Abedi’s 22-year-old brother Salman carried out the bombing at the Manchester Arena, he was an “integral part” of its preparation.

He condemned the Islamic State group-inspired attack — one of the worst on British soil in which hundreds of people were injured — as “abhorrent” to most followers of Islam.

“The defendant and his brother were equally culpable for the deaths and injuries caused,” he told the court.

“The stark reality is that these were atrocious crimes, large in their scale, deadly in their intent, and appalling in their consequences.

“The despair and desolation of the bereaved families have been palpable,” he added, paying tribute to the “tremendous dignity and courage” of the victims and their families.

The judge said Abedi could not be given a whole-life term — ensuring he would never be released — because he was aged under 21 at the time of the offences.

But he said a whole-life term “would have been a just sentence”.

The more than three years that Abedi has already spent in custody would count towards the sentence until he was eligible for parole.

But he added: “He may never be released.”

Kaduna court frees 2 suspected killers of pilot Arotile

It was a huge sigh of relief for friends and relations as 2 of the 3 suspected killers of Nigeria’s first female combat helicopter pilot, Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile, were set free by the Kaduna State Magistrate Court 1.

According to the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, read in the open court, there is no premeditation in the death of the Flying Officer Arotile, but there is sufficient evidence to prosecute the 1st suspect, Nehemiah Adejor for culpable homicide not punishable with death.

We won’t accept ‘satanic’ CAMA, CAN vows

The Christian Association of Nigeria has rejected the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 (CAMA), dismissing it as “satanic”.

The apex Christian body said CAMA “would snuff life out of the church and rank the church as a secular institution under secular control.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on August 7 signed into law, the Companies and Allied Matters Bill 2020.

The bill passed by the National Assembly replaced the 1990 CAMA.

The Christian body described sections 839(1) and (2) as of the law which empowers the supervising Minister “to suspend trustees of an association (in this case, the church) and appoint the interim managers to manage the affairs of the association for some given reasons” as “satanic”.

Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant on Media and Communications to CAN President, Rev Samson Ayokunle, in a statement noted the Federal Government has declared war on the church if the law were to stand.

Titled “Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) rejects CAMA Completely,” the statement reads: “The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria rejects outrightly the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 that was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari recently.

“The law, to say the least, is unacceptable, ungodly, reprehensible, and an ill-wind that blows no one any good. It is a time bomb waiting to explode.

“While we are not against the government fighting corruption wherever it may be found, yet we completely reject the idea of bringing the church, which is technically grouped among the NGOs, under control of the government.

“The Church cannot be controlled by the government because of its spiritual responsibilities and obligations.”

The Christian body added: “How can the government sack the trustee of a church which it contributed no dime to establish?

“How can a secular and political minister be the final authority on the affairs and management of another institution which is not political?

“How can a non-Christian head of government ministry be the one to determine the running of the church? It is an invitation to trouble that the government does not have power to manage.”

It advised the government to “face the business of providing infrastructure for the people. Let them focus on better health provision, food, education, adequate security employment, etc.

“The government should not be a busy body in a matter that does not belong to it. The government does not have the technical expertise to run the church of God because of its spiritual nature.

“If the government is bent on imposing a law on us which the entire Church in Nigeria is against, then, they have declared war on Christianity and the agenda to destroy the Church which we have spoken against before now is coming to the open more clearly.

“If you cannot give us good amenities of life, we would not allow you to take away our liberty to worship our Maker.”

CAN called on Buhari to “stop the implementation of the obnoxious and ungodly law until the religious institutions are exempted from it” and “return the law to the National Assembly for immediate amendment.”

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny 'poisoned'

Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny is unconscious in hospital with suspected poisoning, his spokeswoman has said.

The anti-corruption campaigner fell ill during a flight and the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk, Kira Yarmysh said, adding that they suspected something had been mixed into his tea.

A hospital source confirmed Mr Navalny was in a serious condition.

Mr Navalny, 44, is a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin.

In June he described a vote on constitutional reforms as a "coup" and a "violation of the constitution". The reforms allow Mr Putin to serve another two terms in office.

Kira Yarmysh, the press secretary for the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which Mr Navalny founded in 2011, tweeted: "This morning Navalny was returning to Moscow from Tomsk.

"During the flight, he felt ill. The plane made an urgent landing in Omsk. Alexei has toxic poisoning. Right now we are going to hospital."

She added: "We suspect that Alexei was poisoned by something mixed into [his] tea. It was the only thing he drank since morning.

"Doctors are saying that the toxic agent absorbed faster through the hot liquid. Right now Alexei is unconscious."

WAEC arrests supervisors who revealed questions to candidates before exams

Head of National Office, West Africa Examination Council, Patrick Areghan, said the body arrested some of its supervisors who revealed questions to candidates before the commencement of the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination.

Areghan, who spoke during a monitoring exercise to some schools in Yaba, Lagos State, also told students taking WASSCE to shun examination malpractice and rely on their ability.

According to him, the visit was to monitor the exams which commenced on Monday and to ensure that students and teachers complied with Covid-19 safety measures.

“Students should not go about looking for anything they call expo. It is shameful, supervisors collecting question papers from WAEC and going somewhere to open the questions. Yesterday we caught one in Nasarawa. They don’t know that we have a way of detecting them. In Bauchi, we caught another. We detected it from here. In Port Harcout, a candidate did the same thing and was arrested,” said Areghan.

Ekiti lady colludes with friend, fakes kidnap to extort money from parents

The Police in Ekiti State have arrested a lady, Mary Idris, for allegedly faking her own kidnap on August 9, 2020, with a view to extorting money from her parents.

The state Commissioner of Police, Tunde Mobayo, said the lady was “arrested alongside her accomplice, Victor Olawuse, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, where she had gone from Ekiti State to carry out the act.”

The commissioner, who was represented by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, during the parade of 18 suspects for various offences at the police headquarters, said Mary’s mother “came to our station and reported that her daughter, Mary Idris, left home on August 9, at about 4pm and never returned.

“She said all efforts to reach her daughter via phone calls proved abortive. After a while, the younger sister of the suspect received a message through her phone that Mary had been kidnapped and demanded ransom to be paid to Access Bank Account number 11233209688.

“The command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives tracked the phone number that sent the message to Akure, Ondo State, where Mary was arrested alongside her accomplice, Victor Olawuse.”

Mary said, “I arranged the kidnap to get money from my parents because they are not taking proper care of me.”

The police also paraded one Femi Eyinafe for allegedly abducting and having canal knowledge of a 16-year-old girl for three days.

The commissioner said, “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, and had described how he made the victim drink a locally manufactured bottled  beverage already laced with hard drugs, after which she lost consciousness for the three days.”

African Union suspends Mali over military coup

The African Union (AU) has suspended Mali a day after its leaders were detained by mutineering soldiers and the president forced out.

The AU’s 15-member security council “suspends Mali from the African Union until restoration of constitutional order and demands release of President Boubacar Keita, the Prime Minister and other government officials forcibly detained by the army,” the AU Peace and Security Council said on Twitter.

Keita said Wednesday he had stepped down to avoid “bloodshed” after he was detained in a coup, whose leaders pledged new elections after taking the president and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse into custody.

The 55-member AU had already condemned the “unconstitutional change of government” in the West African nation.

It joined a growing international chorus, including the US and European Union, that demanded the immediate release of the detained leaders.

Mali joins a handful of African nations in recent years to be suspended from the Africa-wide bloc, a move that bars them from all summits and meetings.

Mali’s neighbour Burkina Faso was suspended in 2015 for its own military coup. Sudan was barred last year during a bloody crisis there, while Egypt was suspended in 2013 when the army overthrew the elected president, Mohamed Morsi.

Bakare, Adeyemi, others who refused to open churches are fake – Oyakhilome

Founder, Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has lashed out at churches that refused to open for worship in Lagos State, describing them as fake.

Founder, The Citadel Global Community Church, formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare; founder, Day Star, Pastor Sam Adeyemi and some others have refused to open their churches for services after the Lagos State Government lifted the ban on religious centres’ re-opening.

But Oyahilome during a service said ” if you refuse to open church for fear of being infected, you were never a believer.

“This is a great concern because there were churches that were thought to be churches until recently. We find a lot of ministers who were thought to be advocates of the gospel advocating for shutting down the churches. (Because they cannot guarantee safety).

“It is pressure like this that reveals what is a church and what is not. Do they really believe in God, the same God of the patriarchs in the Bible?

“I have laid hands on some of the most infectious people on earth and had no fear of being infected. The Word of God guarantees life in Christ.

“When you get to that point where you are afraid of opening churches for fear of being infected, you have denied the faith. You never believed,” he said.
