2 dead, several injured as SUV rams into building

Two persons have been confirmed dead while several others sustained different degrees of injuries following a brake failure accident involving an unregistered Land Rover SUV.

The SUV reportedly veered off the road and rammed into a building at Panada, Isolo area of Lagos State.

According to eyewitnesses, who spoke to DAILY POST, the vehicle had hit several people along the roadside killing two persons, including an eight year old child.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Aswani Divisional Police Station, CSP Oyin Francess, said an investigation would be conducted to know the real owner of the vehicle since it is unregistered.

She said the vehicle has been evacuated to the police station while the injured persons including the driver have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

One eyewitness, Iya Fathia narrated: “I sell goods on that culvert. As the vehicle was approaching with reckless speed, I shouted at him to condemn his manner of driving in fact, he bashed the police patrol van stationed over there and what we saw next was that he was hitting people on the roadside before ramming into that building. It was then we moved closer to the place and realised that several people had been injured. On the spot, we saw a small girl lying lifeless on the floor as well as a man who was identified as Jelili on the floor.

“Several people were injured. The girl’s sister was hit and sustained serious injuries. There were another four victims from a family. The accident was so serious that we don’t know the number of people that were injured because the casualties were too much. A woman was selling Dokunu over there, her leg was broken with her small girl also injured. The community has since been thrown into great grief.”

It was learnt that the eight-year-old girl was the only child of her father – who was identified as ‘Akure’ and had followed her maternal stepsister out to get what she was going to eat when the unfortunate accident happened.

The eight year old girl’s father was seen crying uncontrollably while he received sympathisers.

He said, “if I am at home she wouldn’t have gone out. She knew everything about me. Whenever I and her mother got into a misunderstanding, she knew how to calm me down. She knew what I wanted and what I detest. Where is my Eniola!”

A family friend, Pastor Mrs. Ezekiel Ojomo, explained that the little girl had followed her sister out to get food without the consent of their mother.

She said the mother would not have allowed her to follow her sister.

The Kaduna State Government has lifted the prohibition on daily prayers and services in places of worship but on condition that worshipers must comply with health protocols.

A statement from Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, which was signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Mr Muyiwa Adekeye, noted that the decision was taken on the recommendation of the State Covid-19 Task Force.

‘’As people pursue their livelihoods, they should practise the personal responsibility obligations outlined in the FORWARD campaign to protect themselves and their families,’’ he said.

Muslim girl in France shaved by family over Christian boyfriend

The parents, uncle and aunt of a teenager of Bosnian Muslim origin will face trial in France on charges of violence against a minor for shaving her head over her relationship with a Christian Serbian boy, prosecutors said Friday.

The girl had her hair shaven off and was also beaten in the eastern city of Besancon on Monday, judicial sources said.

“Shaved and beaten because she ‘loved a Christian’. Deeply shocked by this act of torture on this 17-year-old girl,” French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote on Twitter.

“This barbarity calls for the most severe punishment,” he added.

Police detained the two parents as well as the uncle and the aunt. They were released under judicial control but are banned from contacting the girl, who has been placed under protection. They are not aware of her whereabouts.

They will be tried for “violence against minors”, deputy prosecutor Margaret Parietti told AFP.

– ‘Can’t marry a Christian’ –

The girl, who arrived from Bosnia-Herzegovina two years ago with her family, had for several months had a relationship with the young man, aged 20, of Serbian origin who lived in the same building.

“The two families knew each other and (their relationship) was not a problem, but when they started talking about marriage, the girl’s parents told her: ‘We are Muslims, you cannot marry a Christian’,” Parietti said.

The family took away her phone and stopped her contacting her boyfriend. The pair then fled for four days and on their return came to the apartment of the girl’s family along with the boy’s parents.

“The first blow came from the mother, then there was an outbreak of violence. She was taken to a room and beaten. She was shaved, according to her testimony, by her uncle — her father’s brother — while being beaten”, the prosecutor said.

The parents of the young man said they did not dare to intervene but he left the house to report what had happened to police, prosecutors said.

Police in France arrived to find the Muslim girl had been made to hide in a room by her aunt. But she was discovered and taken to hospital, the Est Republicain newspaper reported.

She suffered a broken rib and bruises “everywhere”, in particular, “at the level of the ear”, according to Parietti.

Head-shaving in this context has a particularly shocking context in France.

It was the punishment after World War II meted out to thousands of women who had relationships with Nazi occupiers.

Bosnia’s 1992-1995 inter-ethnic war pitted Muslims, Serbs and Croats against each other and left 100,000 people dead and displaced more than two million.

Woman doesn’t know whether to ‘laugh or cry’ after mischievous dog eats her savings

We’ve heard about dogs eating homework, but it’s safe to say we are pretty unfamiliar with a canine munching on someone’s savings.

Well, this was the sad reality for one woman from the Isle of Man. Jocelyn Horne initially thought her boyfriend Allan Kinrade was playing a prank on her when he delivered the news that their dog had chewed up the pot of money on her bedside table.

After discovering her money was gone – and spotting a lonely looking £20 lying on the floor – Jocelyn realised it really had happened.

The culprit – their 10-month-old miniature poodle Peggy – has a passion for chewing anything and everything that hits the floor.

Jocelyn said: ‘I keep my bedroom door closed because of her [Peggy] and I came in and could just see a single piece of £20 on my bed. ‘I searched high and low, couldn’t find anything else and thought there’s no way she’s eaten £100 – she couldn’t have

. ‘I actually thought it was my boyfriend playing a joke on me as he kept laughing and I was still adamant that I must’ve misplaced it.’ Her worries were confirmed when she found the remainder of the cash in a pile of dog sick on her kitchen floor.

The beautician was pretty gutted to discover Peggy had eaten her £100 rainy day savings, but Allan and their three children – Isla, Lola and Rhys – found the incident hilarious.

Jocelyn added: ‘Normally when she gets hold of something like toilet roll holders or the post, she just shreds it to pieces – she doesn’t actually swallow it. ‘I don’t know why she decided to swallow these £20 notes, and they mustn’t have gone down very well.

‘I thought I’d wash them to see if I can get the serial numbers because then you can possibly get your money back, but she’d just thrown up parts of each note as if to really take the mickey. ‘Most people just find it hilarious, but know the pain that you’re going through because it’s a lot of money. ‘My children also found it hilarious – they don’t know what £100 means.

‘I still don’t know whether to laugh or cry – I look at her and I think I bloody love you, but you’ve swallowed £100.’

That day Jocelyn couldn’t look Peggy in the eye as she was so upset, but she eventually saw the funny side of the situation. She added: ‘She’s always got a smile on her face, but you can’t stay mad at her, I wish I could, but I can’t. She is such a good dog – everybody comments on what a lovely natured and happy dog she is. ‘She’s brilliant and so gentle with my children – there’s not an ounce of badness in her.’

Doctors say 'poisoned' Putin critic can't be moved to Germany

Russian doctors have said they will not allow leading opposition figure Alexei Navalny to be transferred from a hospital in Siberia to one in Germany following his suspected poisoning.

The head doctor treating Mr Navalny said he was not well enough to be moved. But a spokeswoman called the decision "a direct threat to his life".

Activists in Germany have sent a plane to bring him to Berlin for treatment.

Mr Navalny is a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He fell ill during a flight on Thursday. His team suspects something was put in his tea at an airport cafe.

The head doctor at the Siberian hospital, Alexander Murakhovsky, told reporters on Friday that Mr Navalny's condition had improved a little, but that he was still unstable. He said legal questions would need to be resolved before Mr Navalny could be moved.

But Mr Navalny's team said it was "deadly" for him to remain in the Siberian hospital.

"The ban on the transportation of Navalny is an attempt on his life, which is being made right now by doctors and the deceitful authorities who sanctioned it," Mr Navalny's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh wrote on Twitter.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen put up their house for sale as they are about to be parents again

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are about to become a family of 5 ... so they need a new and possibly bigger house to reflect that.

The famous couple just listed their Beverly Hills crib -- once featured in Architectural Digest, for a cool $23.95 million.

The entrance to this house is stunning ... as you're immediately greeted by 33-foot ceilings and a sculptural staircase.

The 7 bedroom, 8 bathroom crib sits on an almost 38,000-square-foot lot size. It's got all the bells and whistles. It also features a state-of-the-art chef's kitchen and incredible detail ... like the mandala-patterned ceilings from Thailand.

There's a balcony and en-suite baths in all 7 bedrooms ... but there's only one "Glam Room," and that's in the master bedroom.

Once outside, there are sweeping canyon views, a pool, jacuzzi and a wood-burning oven and chef's grill.

Possibly, they need a bigger home as their family is about to get larger.

El-Rufai breaks silence on NBA’s withdrawal of invitation

The Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai, has said the withdrawal of his invitation to speak at this year’s Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference, is an “unfortunate embrace of injustice”.

El-Rufai said this in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye.

The NBA withdrew the invitation, following protests from some lawyers.

However, El-Rufai in the statement, insisted he will continue to offer his opinions on critical issues in the country and his voice will not be silenced.

“While the decision about who speaks at its event is clearly the NBA’s, Malam El-Rufai wishes to make clear that he did not seek the platform and is not agitated that he has one less speaking engagement.

“However, the circumstances of the last few days warrant some comments. That a professional organisation has elected to endorse a one-sided narrative on a profound national issue is something that its members may wish to reflect upon.

“For an association, whose bread and butter is about justice, to make a ruling based on the stridency of people who lampoon judicial processes against certain individuals without hearing the other side is odd. It bears noting that in its response to pressure, the NBA leadership has signalled an unfortunate embrace of injustice, unfairness, absence of fair hearing and total disregard for the rule of law,” the statement read.

COVID-19: Madagascar sacks Health Minister for seeking foreign help

Madagascar has sacked its Minister of Health, Ahmad Ahmad as coronavirus spreads in the country.

This is coming a month after Ahmad had a problem with the President for seeking outside help for coronavirus.

Madagascar saw COVID-19 cases rise in July despite an official campaign to promote a controversial herbal drink touted as a remedy for the virus.

Minister Ahmad had written a letter to international agents asking for medical equipment after hospitals in the country raised concern about lack of beds.

The move angered President Andry Rajoelina who said the Minister had acted “without consulting” either the government or head of state.

His sack was announced on Thursday as President Rajoelina reshuffles his cabinet.

“Jean Louis Hanitrala Rakotovao has been named new health minister,” cabinet secretary Valery Ramonjavelo told a press conference, without giving details about the change.

TikTok removes 380,000 videos for violating hate speech policy

TikTok has removed more than 380,000 videos in the US for violating its hate speech policy so far this year, the short-form video app said Thursday.

The app, owned by China’s ByteDance, also said it banned more than 1,300 accounts for posting hateful content.

TikTok said in a blog post that it had acted on content such as race-based harassment and that it also had a zero-tolerance policy on organized hate groups and on content that denied “violent tragedies” like the Holocaust or slavery.

The app, which is hugely popular among teenagers, is best known for dance and lip-syncing routines and viral challenges, but a review by the Anti-Defamation League earlier this month said that the platform was being used to spread white supremacist and anti-Semitic hate speech.

TikTok, which has been under scrutiny over its content moderation practices, in March named the initial members of a content advisory council, to give advice on its policies and evaluate the company’s actions.

President Trump also ordered ByteDance last week to divest TikTok’s US operations within 90 days, in the latest effort to ramp up pressure on the Chinese company over concerns about the safety of the personal data it handles. US officials have expressed concerns that information on users could be passed on to China’s government.

TikTok has said that it has never provided user data to China and that it would not do so if asked.

Court jails two Lebanese, orders forfeiture of $ 890,000

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Port Harcourt zonal office on Thursday secured the conviction of Chamseddine Waell Mohammed and Dina Jihad Khali who both pleaded guilty to separate one count charge of money laundering preferred against them.

The offences run contrary to Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as amended) and punishable under Section 2 (5) of the same Act.

Both defendants were sentenced to two years imprisonment by Justice I. M. Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The first charge read: “That you Chamseddine Waell Mohammed on the 1st July, 2020 at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fail to make a declaration of the sum of $220,000.00 (Two Hundred and Twenty Thousand US Dollars) hid in your Luggage on board a chartered flight with registration number 9HVFF to Lebanon and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as Amended) and punishable under section 2 (5) of the same Act”.

The second charge read: “That you Dina Jihad Khali on the 1st July, 2020 at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fail to make a declaration to the Nigeria Custom Service as required by law cash transportation of the sum of $670,000.00 (Six Hundred and Seventy Thousand US Dollars) hid in your Luggage on board a chartered flight with registration number 9HVFF to Lebanon and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as Amended) and punishable under Section 2 (5) of the same Act”.

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.

While reviewing facts of the case, prosecuting counsel, Aso Larrys Peters tendered some documents, which included Letter of Invitation from Customs and statements of the defendants, as exhibits.

Principal Detective Superintendent Macaulay Olayinka while being led in evidence by prosecution counsel, told the court that, the two convicts were arrested for attempting to smuggle a total sum of $890,000 USD out of Nigeria, through the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

“The said amount was found inside their Luggage on board a chartered flight with registration number 9HVFF to Lebanon.

“They were apprehended by the Nigeria Custom Service, Area One Command, Port Harcourt and handed over to the Port Harcourt Zonal office of the EFCC on August 12, 2020 for further investigation.

“The Convicts, Khali with Passport Number LR152975 (Republic of Lebanon) was arrested with $670,000USD while Mohammed with Passport Number LR0356598 (Republic of Lebanon) had in his possession the sum of $220,000USD (Two Hundred and Twenty Thousand Dollars)”, he said.

He further disclosed that the money recovered from the suspects had been deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria, Rivers State Branch, for safe keeping by the arresting agency.

In view of the reviewed facts, the prosecution prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendants as charged.

However, counsel to the defendants, Paul Ejiga urged the court to temper justice with mercy as the defendants were first time offenders who have no previous criminal record.

Justice Sani consequently convicted and sentenced the defendants to two years imprisonment with an option of fine of N1 million each.

The undeclared amount was ordered forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Kanye West blocked from Wisconsin presidential ballot

The Wisconsin Elections Commission voted Thursday to keep American rapper Kanye West off the state’s presidential ballot in November.

On a 5-1 vote, the bipartisan commission ruled that West’s team failed to file its nomination by the deadline of 5 p.m. Aug. 4.

The panel is made up of three Republicans and three Democrats.

The commissioners rejected the argument made by West’s attorney that the rapper’s team actually had until 5:01 p.m. to file, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

West is running on the Birthday Party ticket with vice presidential candidate Michelle Tidball.

“I regret it’s the case,” said Commissioner Dean Knudson, a former GOP state lawmaker. “I do not feel they filed timely.”

West, who is hoping to get on the ballot in a handful of states, turned in more than 2,400 signatures on his nomination papers, more than the 2,000 minimum needed for an independent candidate to get on the ballot in Wisconsin.

Democrats are concerned that a West candidacy will siphon votes from former Vice President Joe Biden, a Democrat who will face Republican President Donald Trump in November.

Wisconsin Republicans took an active part in trying to get West on the ballot.

At least five of his 10 electors are Republican activists or Trump supporters. Also, Lane Ruhland, an attorney for the Trump campaign in a Wisconsin lawsuit, helped file the nomination papers for the West campaign.

One Wisconsin Republican source has said the goal is for West to get 107,000 votes, about what Libertarian Gary Johnson did in 2016. Trump won the state by a little more than 22,000 votes.
