NAFDAC warns against apple, blackcurrant from Australia

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians to stop the consumption of an organic apple and blackcurrant originating from Australia.

Prof. Moji Adeyeye, NAFDAC Director-General, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the products had been certified harmful for human consumption.

“The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of Hong Kong’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has warned against the consumption of Pure Tassie Organic Apple and Blackcurrant Juice originating from Australia.

“This was due to unacceptable level of patulin (mycotoxin) which had exceeded the maximum limit in fruit juice,” she said.

Adeyeye pointed out that the level of patulin content in the affected fruit juice can induce liver, spleen and kidney damage.

She added that the toxic level would affect immune system and causes nausea, gastrointestinal disturbance and vomiting.

She said that the name of the is Pure Tassie, an organic apple and blackcurrant juice from Australia.

The D-G implored importers, distributors, retailers and consumers to immediately stop the importation, distribution, sale and consumption of the affected fruit juice.

She urged members of the public in possession of the affected fruit juice to submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

She also called on healthcare professionals and consumers to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of this product to the nearest NAFDAC office through NAFDAC PRASCOR (20543 TOLL FREE from all networks).

Adeyeye said the agency should be reached through pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng or via the NAFDAC ADR e-Reporting platform available at www.nafdac.gov.ng.

Uganda shuts police HQ after senior officer tests positive for coronavirus

Uganda closed its police national headquarters on Monday after a senior police officer tested positive for coronavirus.

The headquarters building will be closed for three days to allow fumigation and testing of personnel, police spokesperson Fred Enanga told reporters in Kampala.

The announcement came one day after the senior officer, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Asan Kasingye tested positive for the virus on Sunday.

Kasingye announced his status on social media.

Enanga said that since the outbreak in the country on March 21, the police force has been carrying out random testing of its officers.

“We are going to call for more random testing exercises because our officers are actively involved in the daily interaction with members of the public,” he said.

The health ministry has warned of a spike in COVID-19 cases in the country mainly due to local transmissions.

Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte lost £27 million to scammers

Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is aiming to recover £27 million after allegedly being scammed by an investment manager in London.

The 51-year-old enjoyed a successful two-year stint at Stamford Bridge between 2016 and 2018 - winning the Premier League and FA Cup along the way.

But The Times report that he had less success off the pitch, after investing £27m in Kidman Asset Management.

Now Conte, along with seven other investors, are taking action against the company's chief, Massimo Bochicchio, after failing to receive the returns they say they'd been promised.

Bochicchio, 54, has seen £47m worth of assets frozen, including the West London flat in which Conte lived during his Chelsea tenure.

The freezing injunction was granted by judge David Foxton on July 17 after Bochicchio was found to have "breached the terms of eight settlement deeds" that had been agreed with the investors back in May.

As well as Conte, Bochicchio is reported to owe £6.5m to Palesa Sarl, a company based in Luxembourg.

The claimants believed that their money would be guaranteed by HSBC, for whom Bochicchio worked between 2006 and 2012.

But in reality, the bank had nothing to do with the deals.

Conte showed the court a faked document that had appeared to come from HSBC.

Lawyers also claimed that Bochicchio "agreed to hand over account statements, books and records from Kidman Asset Management" - but in fact did not do so.

And he has also failed to provide documentation proving "the nature of third parties" within the agreements, as well as where money was being spent - according to the lawsuit.

Failure to comply with the injunction could even see Bochicchio imprisoned, if he is found to be in contempt of court.

Buildings, cars set alight as natives protest shooting of a black man by police

There have been clashes for a second night in Wisconsin, with buildings and cars set alight, following the police shooting of a black man on Sunday.

Jacob Blake, 29, is in a stable condition after he was shot several times as he went to a car and opened its door in the city of Kenosha.

Governor Tony Evers has called up the National Guard to aid local police.

The killing of black man George Floyd in Minnesota in May led to protests against racism and police brutality.

Demonstrations across the US and in many cities internationally put a spotlight on the treatment of African-Americans by US law enforcement and prompted a wider reflection on racism in society.

Video footage of the Kenosha shooting, taken from across the street and shared on social media, shows Mr Blake leaning into the car and an officer grabbing his shirt, with seven shots heard.

A curfew has been in effect in Kenosha from 20:00 local time (01:00 GMT) and will last until 07:00 on Tuesday - but has been defied by some protesters.

Israeli youths unearth 1,100-year-old gold coins from Abbasid era

Youths volunteering at an archaeological dig in central Israel have found 425 gold coins that had lain buried in a clay jar for 1,100 years.

Most of the money dates back to the early Islamic period, when the region was part of the Abbasid caliphate.

The coins weigh 845g (30oz) and would have been worth a huge sum when they were buried - enough to buy a luxurious home in one of the caliphate's cities.

Who owned the cache, and why they never returned to collect it, is a mystery.

"The person who buried this treasure 1,100 years ago must have expected to retrieve it, and even secured the vessel with a nail so that it would not move," the directors of the excavation, Liat Nadav-Ziv and Elie Haddad of the Israel Antiquities Authority, said in a statement.

They added: "Finding gold coins, certainly in such a considerable quantity, is extremely rare. We almost never find them in archaeological excavations, given that gold has always been extremely valuable, melted down and reused from generation to generation."

The youth who discovered the hoard, Oz Cohen, said: "It was amazing. I dug in the ground and when I excavated the soil, saw what looked like very thin leaves. When I looked again I saw these were gold coins."

Robert Kool, a coin expert, said the cache consisted of full gold dinars but also 270 small gold cuttings - pieces of dinars cut to serve as "small change".

He added that one of the cuttings was a fragment of a gold solidus of the Byzantine Emperor Theophilos minted in Constantinople, which was rare material evidence of the continuous connections between the two rival empires during this period.

25 rescued, 50 trapped in collapsed 5-storey building in India

At least 50 people are feared trapped in the debris of a five-storey building that collapsed on Monday in an industrial town in western India, a lawmaker said.

The building, said to be 50 years old, contained 47 apartments.

Not all the roughly 200 residents of the building in Mahad, about 165 km (100 miles) south of India’s financial capital Mumbai, were at home when it crumbled in the evening, Bharatshet Gogawale, the local lawmaker said.

“I believe about 100 to 125 people must have been inside at the time of its collapse,” Gogawale, who was present at the site, said.

But Hindustan later reported that about 50 people could be trapped, while 25 people were rescued, with one person dead.

The building comprised around 47 flats, according to the police department of western Maharashtra state.

Authorities have yet to ascertain the cause of the collapse and the number of casualties.

TV channels showed footage of the debris with locals and police trying to reach the trapped people.

The TV footage also showed at least one ambulance leaving the area as people surrounding it made frantic phone calls.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has assured the local administration of all possible support for speedy rescue and relief work, his office said on Twitter.

Three teams from the National Disaster Response Force have been moved to the site, the NDRF said in a statement.

Old creaky structures and illegal constructions in India often lead to collapses, typically during torrential rain.

More than 1,200 people were killed in 1,161 building collapses across India in 2017, according to latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau.

20-year-old woman found breathing at funeral home after being pronounced dead

Residents in Detroit are left with more questions than answers after a 20-year-old woman believed to have died was found breathing at a funeral home.

The Southfield Fire Department released a statement saying paramedics responded to a call for an unresponsive female Sunday morning.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found the woman to not be breathing.

According to the statement from the fire department, the paramedics performed CPR and other life saving methods for 30 minutes.

After their efforts, "given medical readings and the condition of the patient, it was determined at that time that she did not have signs of life."

Authorities say per standard operating procedure in a situation where foul play is not suspected, the medical examiner's office was contacted and given the medical data.

The medical examiner's office again determined the patient to have expired, and her body was released directly to the family to make arrangements with a funeral home.

WXYZ reports hours later, staff at the James H. Cole funeral home realized the woman was still breathing.

It is unclear what led up to the call for the unresponsive woman.

Authorities are not releasing additional personal information on the woman at this time.

Suspected serial killer hacks Ogun community leader to death

Landlords and residents of Oluwatedo community, Ogere, in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, have started deserting their houses due to the continuous killing of people by a suspected serial killer, Feyisola Dosumu, aka Spartan.

Punch Metro learnt that the latest in the killing spree of the suspect was a community leader, Elder Olatunji Oladeji.

The 53-year-old Olatunji was said to be the Vice-Chairman of the Oluwatedo Community Development Association.

Olatunji’s son, Samuel, told Punch correspondent that his father had been living in the area for 30 years before he was killed on Friday, August 21, 2020.

He lamented that Dosumu butchered his father in the head and fled the scene.

Samuel stated, “My dad was returning from work and was about to enter the house when this man confronted him and hacked him to death. He butchered my father as if he were an animal. That was around 7.30pm. There was no disagreement between them. People saw him, but could not go near him.

“He has killed a lot of people in this community. Whenever he kills anyone and people go after him, he marks the faces of his pursuers and goes to kill them in their houses.

“About a month ago, he killed a nursing mother, Mummy Seun. He raped the woman and hacked her to death with a cutlass. My father and I carried the woman’s corpse from a mortuary to the place of burial. But my father did not say anything to warrant this senseless killing.”

Samuel, who vowed to leave the community, lamented that many landlords had been deserting their houses because of the suspect.

“Nobody can sleep with their two eyes closed again. He has turned this place to a horror community. The blood of many innocent people has been spilled,” he added.

A landlord, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspect had allegedly killed 15 residents since February 2020.

He alleged that Dosumu only went after settlers.

“He is an indigene of Ogere, but nobody knows where he lives. Once he kills anyone, he will run away. The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, and the Area Commander visited one month ago after he killed a nursing mother and another person. They promised to do something about him. In fact, it was Elder Olatunji, who addressed the CP and pleaded for help. But four days after the visit, everybody left and the man resumed the killing.

“We are tired. Whatever the government can do, they should do it before he finishes everybody.”

Apart from Ogere, the suspect had allegedly been terrorising residents of Iperu, the hometown of the state governor, Dapo Abidoun.

The suspect, alleged to be a notorious cultist, graduated from a polytechnic in Abeokuta.

He was said to have been admitted to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, for treatment after he developed a mental problem.

Dosumu, however, escaped back to Ogere remains elusive to local vigilantes and security agents, and the police have declared him wanted.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that the police would soon get the suspect.

Africans must stop claiming to be black, black is evil – Pastor Chris Oyakhilome

Founder, Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome says it is high time Africans should stop claiming to be black as black signifies absence of direction and evil.

He said the toga: ‘Black lives matter’ should stop, as Africans were not black.

In a telecast to members of his church, Oyakhilome said “Maybe I should tell you something, those of you that say black lives matter, I feel sorry for you! Do you really believe you have a black life? Do you want me to read to you the meaning of black?

“Who called you black? Shouldn’t you have rejected that from the beginning? A contradiction, a bundle of contradiction. You refused negro and nigga… But that’s what black is. You took the English version.

“Negro means black. Do you know what black means… Have you ever seen black? Black means the absence of colour, absence of good, absence of light and absence of direction. These are the meaning of black. Black is not a colour but the absence of colour.. like you are sick, don’t you understand it?”

According to him, “It’s about time Africans say to themselves we are not black. STOP ALL THIS BLACK LIVES MATTER!

Let no one call you black because you are not black… The definition of black is not good and they are using it to destroy you…

“When you keep calling yourself black… You mean light is absent, colour is absent and you will never come to a place of light… You will be under… When God gives you a Prophetic instruction, it is important that you follow into the latter.”

Bollywood’s Bachchan back at work as India relaxes on-set rules

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan is back at work filming India’s version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” following a bout of COVID-19, while authorities eased coronavirus curbs on movie and TV shoots.

A blanket ban on studio activity in March dealt a huge blow to India’s cinema and TV industries, hitting not just Bollywood — the world’s most prolific film factory — but also regional movie-making hubs and productions for television and streaming platforms.

In June shooting was allowed again but with strict rules, including a ban on actors and crew aged over 65 — including Bachchan, 77 — until a court overturned that earlier this month.

Late Sunday the government eased the regulations but still insisted that common facilities be regularly sanitised, masks worn and social distancing “followed as far as possible”.

But the relaxation depends on individual Indian states, and Maharashtra, home to Mumbai and Bollywood and responsible for more than a fifth of India’s virus cases, is sticking to the old rules for now.

“We are careful and will review these decisions based on how the pandemic is evolving in the state,” a spokesman for the state government told AFP.

Shows such as “Kaun Banega Crorepati?” for instance, which Bachchan has hosted as quizmaster since 2000, will not be shot before a studio audience.

The veteran star, who spent much of July in a Mumbai hospital, shared a photo with his 22 million Instagram followers of crew members “in a sea of blue PPE”, wearing full-body overalls and face masks.

Maharashtra authorities have sought to combat the spread of infections by banning producers from filming elaborate dance numbers and fight sequences — a staple of popular Hindi cinema.

Social-distancing norms also put a stop to kissing or embracing, meaning a return of styles from the more conservative 1980s, when Bollywood songs often cut to images of flowers brushing against each other — then a shorthand for romance.

In addition to providing crew members with medical and life insurance, producers in Mumbai are required to have a doctor, nurse and an ambulance on set.

Members of the Bachchan dynasty have been among the country’s highest-profile coronavirus patients.

The superstar, his actor son Abhishek, actress daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai, and granddaughter Aaradhya were all admitted to hospital last month. All four have since been released.

Mali soldiers want three-year stay in power, agree to release president

The junta that seized power in Mali wants a military-led transitional body to rule for three years and has agreed to release the ousted president, a source in a visiting West African delegation and the rebel soldiers said Sunday.

Last week’s coup — Mali’s second in eight years — followed months of protests calling for Ibrahim Boubacar Keita to resign as public discontent with the government grew over the collapsing economy and a brutal Islamist insurgency.

“The junta has affirmed that it wants a three-year transition to review the foundations of the Malian state. This transition will be directed by a body led by a soldier, who will also be head of state,” a source in the ECOWAS delegation told AFP after talks with the junta.

“The government will also be predominantly composed of soldiers” under the proposal, the source said on condition of anonymity.

A junta official confirmed to AFP that “the three-year transition would have a military president and a government mostly composed of soldiers”.

The source and the official added that the soldiers have agreed to free Keita, detained along with other political leaders since the coup on Tuesday, and he would be able to return to his home in the capital Bamako.

“And if he wants to travel abroad for (medical) treatment, that is not a problem,” said the source from ECOWAS, which stands for the Economic Community of West African States.

Prime minister Boubou Cisse, who has been held with Keita at a military base outside the capital where the coup began, would be moved to a secure residence in the city.

While the coup was met with international condemnation, thousands of opposition supporters celebrated the president’s ouster in the streets of Bamako.
