Wike buys 15 land cruiser prado VX, TXL for Rivers’ Federal Lawmakers [Photos]

Governor Nyesom Wike on Tuesday overwhelmed Rivers lawmakers in the National Assembly (NASS) with car gifts, charging them to defend Rivers state interests at all time in the discharge of their duties.

Wike, through Amb Desmond Akawor, Rivers Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presented 15 Land Cruiser Prado VX and TXL jeeps to the Rivers NASS members at Government House, Port Harcourt.

The Governor, in a statement released on the event by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paulinus Nsirim, said, “The gesture would ease their movement and enable them to discharge their legislative duties effectively.

He urged the all PDP recipients to keep faith with the Party so they can collectively recover what was lost at the national during the forthcoming 2023 general election.

Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial District, George Thompson Sekibo noted on behalf of his colleagues that despite challenges posed by COVID-19 on the state finances, Wike still saved funds to provide them vehicles.

A member representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency, Dumnamene Deekor said the governor has been consistent in encouraging the federal legislators to protect the interest of Rivers people.

FG orders petroleum ministry vehicles to run on autogas

The Federal Government has ordered the chief executive officers and their lieutenants in agencies under the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources to convert all their official vehicles to run on autogas.

It was gathered on Tuesday that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, who gave the directive in Abuja, had already submitted all his vehicles to be converted to run on gas, as opposed to petrol.

The minister said the conversation of vehicles in his ministry and agencies to run on autogas was to demonstrate to Nigerians that the government was serious with its declaration of 2020 as “the year of gas.”

Sylva disclosed this in his address at the Ministerial Mandate Performance Scorecard Review session of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, permanent secretary and CEOs of agencies under the petroleum ministry.

Since 2019, the Federal Government has been pushing for the usage of Compressed Natural Gas and Liquified Petroleum Gas in automobiles to utilise Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves.

NDLEA, Customs, Police intercept 11.8 million tramadol tablets in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized 11,785,800 tramadol tablets in Lagos.

They were packed in a total of 607 cartons.

Head of Public Affairs, Jonah Achema, made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday.

It quoted the Chairman, Muhammad Abdallah, as saying the interception was with the assistance and cooperation of the Customs Area Command, Apapa.

“This was discovered in another container number TCNU 9465832 belonging to the same suspect transferred to NDLEA by the Police.

“This is making it 3 containers used to carefully conceal illegally imported tramadol and other medicines to Nigeria,” he said.

He said recent discovery of more tramadol using the same route from Pakistan Asia – Hamburg, Europe – Nigeria showed the system of operation by the drug cartel to beat security operatives.

NAN reports that Police detectives in Apapa Area Command intercepted a 40-foot container laden with drugs suspected to be tramadol and codeine on August 6.

During investigation, another 40 foot container discovered had 255 cartons of different types of tramadol and other banned medicines on August 19.

EFCC arraigns couple for alleged fraud in Akwa Ibom

The Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday arraigned a man, Gabriel Ikpenwa, and his wife, Lillian Ikpenwa, before Justice Archibong Archibong of the Akwa Ibom State High Court for fraud.

They were arraigned alongside a cooperative society, Easycash Multipurpose, owned by Gabriel, on two counts of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences.

The couple started their journey to the dock when one Maria Umana on February 22, 2018, petitioned the EFCC, alleging that in 2013, the couple lured her into investing N450,000 in their cooperative society, with the promise that she would receive N67,500 on a monthly basis as interest.

For five years, however, the defendants neither paid the victim the interest nor returned her capital.

The charges read in part, “That you, Gabriel Chizoba Ikpenwa, Lillian Nkechi Ikpenwa, and Easycash Multipurpose Cooperative Society, sometime in 2013 at Uyo, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of N450,000 only from one Maria Ebong Umana, under the pretext that if the said Maria Ebong Umana invested the sum of N450,000, she would gain interest of N67,000 monthly, the pretences you knew to be false, thereby committing an offence.”

The couple pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, N. Ukoha, asked for a trial date and urged the court to remand the couple in prison.

The defence counsel, C. I. Udoh, informed the court of a bail application for the second defendant, Lilian, pending before the court.

Though the prosecution opposed the application, Justice Archibong granted her bail in the sum of N1m with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned till December 9 and 10, 2020, for trial.

Mikel Obi scores in first game for Stoke City

John Obi Mikel scored his first Stoke City goal in their 5-1 hammering of Shrewsbury Town in Tuesday’s pre-season friendly match.

Mikel who joined the Potters on a free transfer earlier this month, made his first start for Stoke City at the club’s Clayton Wood training ground.

The 33-year-old restored the hosts’ lead just before the break after Oakley-Boothe’s opener was cancelled out by Shrewsbury Town.

Mikel was in action for 45 minutes before he was replaced by Tom Ince while DR Congo’s Benik Afobe was introduced for Lee Gregory, nine minutes after the hour-mark, Goal reports.

Afobe joined the party later in the second half as goals from the Congolese star, Ince and Tyrese Campbell completed the rout for Stoke City.

The encounter returned Stoke City to winning ways after they suffered a 1-0 loss against Burton Albion in their last friendly outing on August 22.

Following Tuesday’s convincing victory, Mikel will be eager to steer the Potters to victory when they host Blackpool for their League Cup fixture at bet365 Stadium on Saturday.

Meanwhile, O’Neill has lauded the former Nigeria captain for showing an instant impact in the team with his hard work.

“John’s been great in his first few days. You can see his quality, there’s no doubt, people in the group see his quality,” he was quoted by Stoke Sentinel.

Mali suspended from international Francophone community over coup

The international community increased pressure on the military junta that has seized power in Mali, as the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) suspended the nation from its membership Tuesday.

Its leadership agreed the move at an extraordinary session held via videoconference, while adding that it would maintain any cooperation that would help the civilian population and a transition to democracy.

The decision came a day after envoys from the West African bloc ECOWAS and the new military rulers said they had failed to agree on a timetable to return Mali to democratic rule.

The OIF also called for the liberation of the ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who stepped down from power last week after the military revolt, saying he wanted to avoid bloodshed.

And they called for the establishment, as soon as possible, of “a transition government led by an civilian authority”. The OIF said it would be sending a high-delegation to Mali in the coming days.

The international community has already condemned the August 18 coup and ECOWAS has suspended Mali from its ranks.

ECOWAS has so far taken the lead in the international community in trying to negotiate a timetable for a return to civilian rule with the country’s new military leaders.

But both sides said Monday they had failed to reach agreement — and also that Keita no longer wanted to be restored to be power, which had been one of the initial demands made by ECOWAS.

Keita was elected in 2013 after running a campaign in which he pitched himself as a unifying force in a fractured country.

He was re-elected for a second term in 2018 but failed to make headway against the jihadists, and the ethnic unrest they ignited in the centre of the country further damaged an already sickly economy.

An outcry over the results of long-delayed legislative elections in April cemented his unpopular reputation, and in June a protest movement was born aimed at forcing him to resign.

Senate probes NTA-StarTimes after no profit in 12 years

The Nigerian Senate may call for a forensic audit of the joint venture between the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Chinese cable company, StarTimes.

The senate is bewildered that 12 years after the agreement in 2008, there is no profit to show.

Chairman, Senate Joint Committee on Finance and National Planning, Sen. Solomon Adeola, said this on Tuesday in Abuja, during an interactive session with some revenue generating agencies of government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the upper chamber had, on Monday, queried the management of NTA, why the venture is not turning profit after 12 years.

The Senate asked that the management should appear before the committee along with the Managing Director, NTA TV Enterprises, Mr Maxwell Loko.

The joint venture agreement was that whatever accrued at the end of every financial year, 70 per cent, goes to StarTimes and 30 per cent to Nigeria.

Adeola also queried why some of the accounts of StarTimes were in dollars and naira.

The 49-year old shot to global fame in 2018 for her ageless physique and stunning appearance which saw her outperform women half her age in modelling competitions.

And the mother-of-four and grandmother-of-one has admitted that she isn't shy about trying unusual beauty treatments to keep her good looks, having recently endured cryotherapy to 'rejuvenate' her body.

The therapy which is a favorite of celebrities is a hyper-cooling remedy for muscle fatigue, muscle repair, injury treatment plus general skin revival, and involves enveloping the body or a localised area in nitrogen mist for three minutes.

While it leaves the skin feeling refreshed, a person's body will also be working overtime to maintain its core temperature, thus burning hundreds of calories per session and influencing the metabolism long term.

Gina said: 'Something I’m doing and have done for a while now to keep myself looking youthful is cryotherapy. I literally freeze myself to -110C for three minutes a session.'

She said she sticks to a strict skincare regime - involving her 'secret weapon' rosehip oil. She also opts for a protein-filled diet.

Photos: Amsterdam uses special plant pots to tackle age old problem of public urination

The city of Amsterdam has found an innovative way to tackle the age old problem of public urination.

The city council has installed 12 special plant pots that double up as urinals spread across tourist hot spots including the Red Light District, Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein.

The planters, called GreenPees, serve a duel purpose, providing late night revellers with a place to relieve themselves if they are caught short while the urine is collected and used to make fertiliser.

The Dutch company behind GreenPees already supplies the bold invention to three other cities in the Netherlands and one city in Belgium.

Inventor Richard de Vries said the company worked on a pilot project with the city back in 2018 which saw four GreenPees installed and reduced 'wild peeing' by 50 per cent.

He added: 'Peeing against a wall is going to damage historic buildings.

'It is dirty, unhygienic and attracts flies. We came up with the idea of a planter to help keep the city green and provide something we can make fertiliser from.'

Outstanding Honesty: Gov. Ugwuanyi rewards woman who returned N13.9m

In appreciation of the outstanding and exemplary honesty she displayed in returning the sum of thirteen million, nine hundred and forty six thousand, four hundred naira (N13,946,400.00) mistakenly paid into her account, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, on Tuesday, rewarded Mrs. Josephine Nchetaka Chukwujama-Eze, with a cash of one million naira.

The cash reward was announced by the State Commissioner for Gender Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Princess Peace Nnaji, after a closed-door meeting with the woman in her office.

“We all know that times are hard these days, especially with the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic. It is not that she is very comfortable; she is a teacher in a mission school and look at what she has done.

“This is a real character and Enugu State Government wants to appreciate her for what she has done. His Excellency, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has directed that she should be rewarded with the sum of one million naira”, Nnaji said.

Thank you, the Honourable Commissioner for Gender Affairs. Please extend my greatest thanks to His Excellency, our dear Governor”.

Also in his appreciation, the woman’s husband, Barr. Eze, ascribed his wife’s display of honesty to family upbringing and the cultural value of Enugu State and the entire Igbos, pointing out that “it is a demonstration that in Nigeria, there are a lot of good people out there.”

His words: “What we have witnessed today is a life experience which didn’t come by accident. It is a function of family upbringing.

South Korea shuts schools in capital as 193 students, teachers test positive for covid-19 in 2 weeks

South Korea is closing schools and switching back to remote learning in Seoul after the country counted its 12th straight day of triple-digit daily increases in coronavirus cases.

Education Minister Yoo Eun-hae said that at least 193 students and teachers were found infected over the past two weeks in the Seoul metropolitan region, where a viral surge has threatened to erase the country's hard-won epidemiological gains.

South Korea's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 280 new cases of Covid-19, pushing the 12-day total to 3,175. The country's caseload is now at 17,945, including 310 deaths.

Yoo said most children at kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools will receive online classes at least until Sept. 11. High-school seniors will continue to go to school so their studies are not disrupted ahead of the crucial national college exams.

The country since Sunday has banned larger gatherings, shut down nightspots and churches and removed fans from professional sports nationwide. Officials say the country could be forced to elevate social distancing restrictions if the virus doesn't slow after this week, measures that would batter an already weak economy.

Man suffers painful allergic reaction after girlfriend dyes his beard 'just for fun'

A man who attempted to dye his beard black out of 'boredom' has suffered an agonising allergic reaction leaving him with chemical burns.

Marno Botha and his girlfriend Caitlynn Van Hecke thought it would be a laugh to change the colour of his facial hair from blond to black - with Marno saying he would just shave it off if it went wrong.

But the 21-year-old's skin reacted to the dye, turning his face bright red and swollen everywhere he had applied the product, and it took weeks for the side-effects to subside.

The areas on his chin, cheeks and upper lip became extremely sore and Marno had to take antihistamines for a month before his face began to return to normal.

Marno, from Vanderbijlpark, South Africa, said: "We dyed my beard in the afternoon and I woke up at like 3am with this intense itching on my face so I decided to shave my beard.

"I noticed my face had extremely red marks where the hair dye had been applied to my beard and then it started to swell up.

"I could barely move my face and the itching got worse so I went to the doctor who said I'd had an allergic reaction to the hair dye.

"I'd also suffered a chemical burn from leaving the hair dye on my face for too long."

He had previously reacted badly to a henna dye but had completely forgotten about the experience when his partner Caitlynn suggested the new look at her home.

Woman dumped in septic tank by trafficker struggles for survival

Residents are yet to come to terms with the bizarre incident of a breastfeeding mother, Mrs Chizoba Eke, who was found in a septic tank after three days in an uncompleted building at Iguwurita, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The woman is currently struggling for survival as she has been transfused with a unit of blood and needs more to live.

This happened as a senior police officer, Moses Egbede, DCO of Afam Division, Rivers State command, was abducted, killed and dumped in a well by his kidnappers after collecting ransom.

Mrs Eke was abducted from her home on August 17 by a baby trafficker who threw her into a septic tank after whisking her six-month old baby away.

After several cuts on her head and body, the abductor assumed she (Chizoba) was dead and threw her into the well but luckily, after spending three days inside the pit, police officers with the help of residents rescued her, a situation many medical experts have described as a miracle.

The trafficker, who kidnapped the baby, was arrested at Omerelu on his way to Imo State to sell the baby.

The Guardian’s findings from the hospital in Port Harcourt where she is receiving treatment showed that she may need more blood to recover from her deteriorated condition, but sadly, there is no money to meet with such hospital demands.

Mrs Eke was sighted lying on the hospital bed and still looked weak. She can barely stand or sit without assistance. She still can’t talk; even when she manages to speak, no one hears or understands what she says.

While speaking with The Guardian, the husband, Mr Eke E. Eke, said: “I have bought one blood unit and the doctor has transfused it. She still can’t sit or stand, but we have hope that she will survive.

“Due to this ugly development, the baby was abruptly stopped from breastfeeding and would also need more blood but the major challenge is finance. There is no money to get all the hospital needs to work on her. Only our church and some few persons are helping us with some items.”

Mr Eke called on the police to ensure that justice is done on the matter by bringing the perpetrator to book to serve as deterrent to others.

Meanwhile, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed that the police had arrested the suspect and recovered the baby, said the command would brief the public on the update this week.

However, a consultant pediatrician at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital and Chief Medical Director of Oasis Children Specialist Hospital, Dr Appollus Josiah, said the woman maybe unable to talk for now because of fear and low blood sugar level following starvation.

Josiah said: “Abandoning someone with such condition in a pit for three days can shut down a lot of enzymes. For not eating food, the sugar level will go down and she can as well suffer brain damage.”

Tunisia announces second new government in six months

Tunisia’s prime minister-designate on Tuesday unveiled the country’s second government in six months, which must now seek approval from lawmakers incensed by how the administration was formed.

Hichem Mechichi had previously declared his intention to form a cabinet dominated by independent technocrats able to “present urgent solutions” for a country where a sluggish economy has been further battered by the coronavirus pandemic.

The former interior minister’s decision to bypass consultations with political factions had angered, among others, the powerful Islamist party Ennahdha, which has demanded a “political” government reflecting the balance of forces in parliament.

But Ennahdha and other parties have also spoken of the need to approve the government to avoid dragging the already crisis-hit country into disruptive early elections.

Mechichi told reporters he had decided to form a new cabinet composed of “independent expertise”, with only a few outgoing ministers included in the line-up.

The 46-year-old Mechichi is the third head of government to be appointed since polls last October, which resulted in a parliament divided among deeply antagonistic blocs.

The impasse further hampered a fledgeling democracy — ushered in by a revolution 10 years ago — that has since struggled with regional inequalities and a pandemic that has wiped out thousands of jobs.

Ennahdha won the most seats in last year’s poll but fell far short of a majority and eventually agreed to join a coalition administration.

Parliament is set to vote on Mechichi’s line-up in the next 10 days.

Pastor Adeboye reacts to CAMA 2020

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has reacted to the Companies and Allied Matters Act, CAMA, recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The RCCG head joined the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, (PFN) in their position and rejected the bill too.

This was made known by RCCG’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Pastor Olaitan Olubiyi who explained that Adeboye’s opinion on the issue is not always different from whatever the umbrella bodies of Christians decide.

According to Olubiyi, Pastor Adeboye was in alignment with the stand of CAN and PFN.

The CAMA 2020 has ignited reactions from several religious stakeholders and non-governmental human rights organisations, who are opposed to its provisions.

Section 839 which empowers the Commission to suspend trustees of an association and appoint interim managers to manage the affairs of the association was largely rejected by religious bodies and NGOs.

The Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), last week described CAMA, as satanic.

It called on President Muhammadu Buhari to halt the implementation of “the obnoxious and ungodly law until the religious institutions are exempted from it.

I lied about being a stripper – BBnaija Tuoyo confesses

Tuoyo Ideh, one of the housemates in last year’s edition of Big Brother Naija, has revealed that he lied about being a stripper to chase clout.

In a video that he posted on his verified Instagram page, Tuoyo clearly said that he is a physiotherapist, a fitness trainer and a part-time stripper.

However, after a year, he has come out to refute being known as a stripper. According to him, he had been living a lie and he lied to have a shot at being famous.

For over a year now I’ve been living a lie. Some people have advised me to go on with it but I fear for my mental health and my future so I’ve chosen to come out.

”Big brother was my biggest shot at fame and nothing in the world could have stopped me from grabbing it with both hands. Somehow I felt like I wasn’t enough and I needed to do more and BE more in order to stay relevant and to get some extra clout.

”I was desperate, the magnitude of the competition I was going for even made me more desperate so I attached a tag to myself – “I’m a Part-time Stripper” I said to the whole world.

”I got the hype I wanted but it was unsustainable, I couldn’t live up to it because actually that’s not who I am but because I have the body I tried to force it, to push if I could keep living the lie to make it become true but the more I did, the more I regretted.

”I wasn’t deriving any pleasure and in fact, I felt like I was making a fool of myself so I had to stop. And I’m here to say I’m sorry I lied, no one is perfect, my ultimate strategy has turned back to hurt my reputation and my brand.

”My name is Tuoyo Ideh AND I AM NOT A STRIPPER. You’ll be meeting the REAL me very soon. Cheers to a new beginning!!” he concluded.
