Djokovic out of US Open after hitting Judge in the neck

Novak Djokovic, the favourite for the men’s singles title at the US Open, is out of the competition after he accidentally hit a line judge in the neck when he hit the ball back off his racket.

He had just lost a point in the opening set.

Players who hit another person on the court can be automatically disqualified from the competition by way of a loss.

Djokovic realized immediately he hit her and approached the person.

Pablo Carreno Busta, the No. 20 seed and a 2017 semifinalist, will advance to the quarterfinals. The score of the first set was 6-5.

There will be a new Grand Slam men’s singles champion for the first time in six years.

Carreno Busta went on a run after trailing 5-4 and rattled off five points in a row. One of those was overturned by a challenge and he evened up the match.

After a third break point, Djokovic smashed the ball and hit the sideboard after play ended, via BBC Sports. Commentators noted that it could be bad if he did that and were to hit someone, and wondered why he hadn’t been given a warning for the dangerous move.

He has a history of similar actions.

At one point before his default, Djokovic fell over when Carreno Busta forced him to change directions.

He appeared to hurt his left shoulder.

He was trying to win his 18th career Grand Slam. He was 26-0 so far this season.

Djokovic attempted to state his case to stay in the competition, telling the officials he could take a game penalty or set penalty rather than a full tournament ouster.

Via Ben Rothenberg at The New York Times, Djokovic also noted that the line judge was able to get up and didn’t need to be taken to the hospital.

Official Andreas Egli reportedly stood firm, while Djokovic continued his plea, saying, “If she would have gotten up right away …” per Rothenberg. The line judge dropped to her knees on the hit near the back of the court and reached for her neck.

Chair umpire Aurelie Tourte made the announcement to an empty stadium — no fans are allowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic after Djokovic went over to shake hands with Carreno Busta.

Djokovic will lose all ranking points and be fined the prize money he won for reaching the round of 16, according to the USTA statement.

Cute throwback photo from Barack and Michelle Obama's wedding night

Michelle Obama shared the lovely throwback photo of her and husband Barack Obama posing together on their wedding day on her instagram page writing;

''Last week on The #MichelleObamaPodcast, Conan and I reflected on our marriages. This relationship can be one of the most foundational pieces of our identities—bringing us so much joy, meaning, and support every single day. But one thing is for sure: It also takes a lot of work; a lot of honesty with ourselves and our partners. That’s one thing I’ve learned. I’d love to hear some of the things you’ve learned about marriage and about yourself. Let me know in the comments. ❤''

British woman ordered to pay her Australian husband £100k after she was found guilty of racially abusing him

A husband forced out of the firm he ran with his wife after their 19-year marriage fell apart has been awarded £100k after a judge ruled she racially harassed the Australian.
Only last year Duncan and Fiona Bendall posed proudly with the Duchess of York at the UK launch of their company The Female Social Network, which they set up in 2016.

But two months later staff packed Mr Bendall’s belongings and kicked him out of the family home, which was also the company’s London HQ.

The Central London Employment Tribunal heard his wife wanted a female pal to replace him at the company, once valued at £170 million.

In the lead-up to his exit from the company Mr Bendall, 47, received an email from his wife, 42, saying: “I hate Australian mentality and you have it [in] droves, just s**t.”

He said: “She kept treating Australia as an inferior race.”

He was fired for “gross misconduct” in August and the couple now plan to divorce.

Mr Bendall claimed unfair dismissal and race and sex discrimination.

Judge David Khan said: “I accept Mrs Bendall harassed you because of your race.”

However, he ruled Mr Bendall was not sacked because of his race or gender, while upholding the unfair dismissal claim.

He awarded him £102,954 including £2,000 for “injury to feelings” over the email.

29 year-old woman killed by husband after receiving money on her phone from man said to be her lover

A 29-year-old woman from Chala Location in Nkasi, Rukwa region in Tanzania was on August 25 fatally stabbed in the neck by her husband after receiving funds from another man through her phone.

Tabitha Mwanyanje, a primary school teacher, and her 30-year-old spouse, Frank Garimoshi, had quarreled before the incident, with the suspect accusing his wife of infidelity.

The couple’s neighbour, Safina Kambeu, told Tanzania’s Global Publishers that the two had, of late, gotten into unending marital dispute over claims that Mwanyanje was cheating on her partner.

“The husband set several traps on different occasions, but none caught his wife cheating on him,” said Kambeu.

Rukwa region police boss, Justus Masejo, said Mwanyanje’s killing happened at 4pm following a quarrel over money sent to the deceased’s phone by another man.

“After receiving the mobile money message, Garomoshi began accusing his wife of soliciting funds from her paramour. A resultant argument between the couple ensued. Garimoshi, during the melee, reached for a kitchen knife and stabbed his wife several times in different parts of her body, including the neck, consequently killing her on the spot,” said Masejo.

Upon learning that Mwanyanje had died, Garimoshi attempted suicide by stabbing himself in different parts of his body.

“His suicide attempt was unsuccessful,” said Masejo, adding: “We arrested and took him to hospital. Once he is out of danger, we will charge him with murder and attempted suicide.”

Undergraduate, 47 kids rescued from Osun baby factory

A facility in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where women are apparently impregnated and their babies sold off by operators has been sealed by the state government.

An undergraduate was among women rescued at the facility, which is said to be operating under the guise of an orphanage.

Also, 47 children were evacuated from building, The Nation gathered.

Women, Children and Social Affairs Commissioner, Olubukola Olaboopo and other officials of the ministry and police sealed off the facility identified as Oroyemi Elizabeth Covenant Home and Care Centre.

Olaboopo told The Nation on the phone on Saturday that government received reports on the goings-on in the building over a period of three to four years suggesting that there were some illegal activities there.

She said despite warnings by the government, the owner persisted, thus breaching the Child Right Laws, and resulting in the closure of the building.

“We have gotten several reports over a period of 3-4 years, reporting how the children in Oroyemi Elizabeth Covenant Home and Care Centre are malnourished and the environment have been very dirty and how some illegal activities have been going on more or less like a baby factory and many more allegations,” she said.

“We rescued 47 children;  10-15 adults girls are there. Those with physical disabilities, among whom is an undergraduate of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, were among those that were rescued. Most of them were crying, they refused to follow us but we were able to take three of them.

“As at this (yesterday) morning, the matron who is taking care of those adults just told me that it seems two of them are breastfeeding. When we interrogated them, they said they have never given birth to a child. So it means that we want to know who got them pregnant when they are not married.

“How come they are pregnant? So there are so many things underneath and the state government is still investigating.”

Man gets trapped under a tree on his farm land for four days and survived only by eating insects

A man has been rescued after being pinned under a tree for more than four days while cutting trees on his land in Minnesota, officials said.

Jonathan Ceplecha, 59, was cutting down oak trees with a chainsaw near Redwood Falls on August 27 when one fell and trapped both of his legs, Redwood County Sheriff's Office said.

Mr Ceplecha was found with both of his legs pinned on Monday and was rescued from the ravine, which was around 91 metres from his house.

He was airlifted to hospital after Redwood Falls Fire Department spent around two hours trying to free him. He was said to be in a stable condition.

A GoFundMe page, set up by his son Miles Ceplecha, says Mr Ceplecha survived the 'freak accident' by eating 'plants and insects'.

It reads: 'Throughout his isolation, Jonathan ate plants and insects within arm's reach, drank sweat and rainwater that he collected in his clothes, and covered his head in his shirt during the nights to keep the insects off as he slept.

'He kept his sanity by breaking down every day into hours, and each hour into 5-minute segments. As someone of a heavy faith, he prayed to himself often, and tried to distract himself from panic by meditating and inventing rhythms to follow from dawn to dusk.'

Anthony Joshua denies alleged affair with Mahrez’s wife

Anthony Joshua’s team have come out fighting after the heavyweight superstar was linked to the wife of Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez, reports dailymail.co.uk.

Joshua, 30, has reportedly been spotted out and about with 26-year-old Rita, who has two children with Mahrez but is now separated from the footballer.

Reports in the Sun stated that Joshua had ‘been spotted on nights out with Rita’, both in public and at the luxury pad of a mutual friend. Now, addressing the topic, a spokesman for Joshua has vehemently denied the accusation.

“Anthony doesn’t personally know Mrs. Mahrez and has no wish to, now or in future,” AJ’s spokesman told the Sun.

“He’s disappointed that she or people around her have tried to use his name to generate publicity.”Joshua is single after his split from dancer Nicole Osbourne in 2016, who he has a young son with.

Joshua is alleged to have first met Rita in London’s high-end Tape nightclub in December but is reported to have ‘backed away’ from the situation upon learning she was still married to City star Mahrez.

Mahrez, 29, married Rita in a private ceremony with only close family and friends back in August 2015 after the couple had dated for around five months.

The couple are since said to be estranged, and have minimal contact with each other. They left their Cheshire mansion after trying to salvage their four-year marriage. Rita, now single, is said to be living in a £2million mansion in Buckinghamshire.

A club-goer told The Sun in December: ‘Rita bumped into AJ on her way out and he invited her to join him at his table in VIP.“Rita, who was with a female pal, clearly thought AJ was incredibly hot. They then spent much of the evening laughing and flirting.”

The source added that he didn’t have a clue who she was but thought she was a pretty girl. Joshua is the second boxer that Rita has been linked to, with reports emerging earlier this year of the American boxer Deontay Wilder flirting with her at a club in Manchester.

3 die, 147 infected with coronavirus after indoor wedding

An outbreak linked to an indoor wedding in the American state of Maine that breached local attendance limits has now resulted in three deaths and 147 infections.

The outbreak began on August 7 when people attended the indoor wedding and reception in the small town of Millinocket.

The official ceremony took place at Tri-Town Baptist Church and around 65 people attended the reception at Big Moose Inn. The state's limit on social gatherings is 50 people.

In the last week of August, officials said there were 53 cases directly connected to the wedding.

By August 31 that number had risen to 123 and on Wednesday it reached 134 cases.

On Friday, 147 Maine residents who attended the wedding or got second-hand infections as a result of the wedding ceremony were recorded.

'One of the things we've learned over the past six months of working with outbreaks and COVID-19 is that no outbreak is an island,'  Maine Centre for Disease Control (CDC)  Director Dr. Nirav Shah said during a press briefing.

'What this really hammers home is that outbreaks are not isolated events. One outbreak can quickly lead to several more outbreaks, especially in a close geographic area.'

Maine CDC spokesperson Robert Long said that three people have died from the outbreak and none of them had even attended the wedding.

One of those victims includes Theresa Dentremont, an 83-year-old woman who died at Millinocket Regional Hospital on August 21 after contracting the virus.

Detremont did not attend the wedding, but hospital staff believed she may have been infected by someone who did.

Her 97-year-old husband Frank Dentremont, who is a WWII veteran and the oldest resident of East Millinocket, was hospitalized at the same facility a few days later with COVID-19.

‘I aborted 15 pregnancies for my husband, now he wants to send me away'

An Ibadan-based nurse, Sukurat Adewale, was all tears on Friday before a customary court sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, while alleging that her husband, Adewunmi Adewale, deceived her into aborting 15 pregnancies she had for him but later abandoned her and their three children in his rented apartment.

Sukurat said her investigation revealed that Adewale had married two other wives in different locations in Ibadan, and pleaded with the court to grant her custody of the three children she had for him.

Sukurat, who was responding to a divorce petition Adewale had filed before the court, said her husband was in the habit of absconding their matrimonial home and would return home with different ailments.

She said, “I am not interested in this marriage again. I thought my husband would change when he returned home after two years. I accepted him back into my life when he appealed to me for forgiveness, but he left us again. He was always very sick whenever he came back home and I would treat him. I reported him to his parents but he didn’t change. I fasted and prayed for him but now he is paying me back with evil.

“I have aborted 15 different pregnancies for him. The last time he left home was because he asked me to abort the last two babies, which I declined. I am still in the rented apartment where he left us. My parents persuaded me to continue with him to save their face because they didn’t want me to marry two husbands.

“I am the only one caring for my children. The day he asked me to bring my children to his parents, he went behind me and angrily took them away from them without considering their future. It took the efforts of our family elders before I could see my children again. He has moved all his belongings out of the house because he has married two other wives. One of the wives has two children for him already.”

The plaintiff had stated in his petition that he was divorcing Sukurat because she was “troublesome, stubborn and wicked.”

He told the court, “She threatened to kill me and kill herself on several occasions. I left home for her because of her wickedness. She cursed my parents all the time. As she visits herbalists, she also visits pastors and Alfas. It is true I beat her when she provoked me but I treated her. She even told one of the nurses who treated her that she wanted me sacked from my office. She invited policemen to arrest me and I was locked up for two days when she knew we are not permitted to be absent from work for two days.”

The president of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, dissolved the marriage and granted custody of the 15-year-old male child in the family to the petitioner, while the two other children were given to their mother. Odunade ordered Adewale to be paying the sum of N10,000 for the monthly upkeep of the two children in the care of the respondent.

Photos: People caught not wearing face masks in Indonesia made to lie down in coffins

Police in Jakarta have been ordered to stop using a controversial punishment for people who refuse to wear face masks.

The punishment saw those caught not wearing mask given the option of community service, a fine, or laying down in a fake coffin.

Those caught in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, were told to "contemplate" the potential health risk from their mistake by laying down in the coffin for several minutes.

Santoso, the deputy head of Pasar Rebo subdistrict, claimed that the offenders had voluntarily opted to lay in the coffin rather than pay the fine or get community service.

“If they chose social work, they had to clean public facilities for at least one hour. When I asked why they didn’t pay the fine, they replied they didn’t have the money,” Santoso said.

The controversial punishment was lifted amid mounting criticisms.

BBNaija 2020: Your actions are beginning to piss me off – Nengi tells Ozo

Big Brother Housemate, Nengi has told her fellow housemate and friend, Ozo that most of his actions were beginning to get her pissed off.

Nengi, while having a discussion with Ozo on Sunday night, said he was being over protective and inquisitive about everything.

According to her, she needs to do things and talk to whomever she wants in the house without having to answer to him all the time.

She also told him to stop assuming that there’s always a problem between them whenever she’s feeling down or upset about something.

“I have told you if I want to do something, leave me.

“Anytime I want to do something and you keep telling me to stay here or do this or that it gets me upset and I don’t want to get upset with you.

“Stop making it look like everything is always about you.

“Anytime I get upset you think it’s about you or that I am angry at you and that’s not supposed to be.

“Just let me do what I want to do anytime I want to do it and stop always insinuating that we have issues whenever my mood changes,” she said.

Fans launch $100k fundraiser for Erica BBNaija disqualified housemate

A group of fans has launched a GoFundMe page for popular Big Brother Naija housemate Erica Ngozi Nlewedim with the funds to be donated to her to realize some of her hopes and aspirations after being disqualified from the show.

Erica, one of the most talked-about housemates who had been issued two strikes before was booted out of the lockdown edition of the show after she tongue-lashed Laycon and even threatened to kill him outside the show.

Although she apologised to her mates, Biggie would not condone bad conduct as she has violated the show’s rules.

However, some of her fans popularly known as Elites have rallied around the actress and commercial model in a rather hopeful that the fund will help fulfil her dreams.

A statement on the GoFundMe page states: “For Erica Nlewedim, the star of BBNaija season 5, Lockdown edition whose journey on the show came to an emotional end – To realize some of her hopes and aspirations.”

So far, the campaign has gathered a total of $6,622 out of the target of $100,000 set for the campaign.

Argentine professor dies of coronavirus after collapsing during zoom lecture

A teacher died of suspected coronavirus after struggling to breathe and then collapsing during a Zoom lecture in front of her students.

Paola De Simone, 46, was a professor at the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE) in Buenos Aires.

During the lesson on Zoom on Wednesday, she told her students she was not feeling very well and had difficulty breathing.

Some of her students reportedly asked her for her home address so they could call an ambulance, but the professor only managed to say "I can't" before collapsing.

Days before dying, the teacher had expressed concerns about her health, saying she had suffered from coronavirus symptoms that had not disappeared for more than a month.

Student Ana Breccia said: “My classmates and I in class yesterday [on Wednesday] were the last ones she spoke to.

"She began by saying that she had pneumonia, we saw it was worse than in previous classes.

"At one point she could not continue passing slides, nor speak and she became unbalanced."

She had continued to work despite suffering from a persistent cough, an academic coordinator from the university said in a statement.

According to a local newspaper, Mrs De Simone was married to a doctor and they had a daughter.

The professor had previously said her husband had been very busy with his work during the pandemic.

According to local media, the doctor found his wife dead when arrived home.

Friends and colleagues expressed their grief at her passing.
