Belarus opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova arrested at Ukraine border
Maria Kolesnikova, one of Belarus’s leading opposition figures, has been detained while trying to cross into Ukraine.
Kolesnikova was detained while attempting to cross overnight with two other members of the opposition’s Coordination Council who were able to pass through to Ukraine, Anton Bychkovsky, a spokesman for the State Border Committee, said.
She and the two other council members, press secretary Anton Rodnenkov and executive secretary Ivan Kravtsov, had disappeared on Monday.
Bychkovsky said Rodnenkov and Kravtsov were able to cross into Ukraine, and the Ukrainian embassy in Minsk has confirmed they were in the country.
Kolesnikova was being held and “an investigation is under way to legally assess the situation,” Bychkovsky said.
State news agency Belta quoted border officials as saying the three had tried to cross the border in a BMW car around 4:00 am Tuesday.
The Coordination Council was set up to ensure a peaceful transfer of power after President Alexander Lukashenko’s main rival Svetlana Tikhanovskaya rejected his claim to have won an August 9 presidential election with 80 percent of the vote.
The disputed election has sparked widespread protests and a harsh police crackdown that has seen several thousand people arrested.
Germany and Britain on Monday demanded answers after Kolesnikova went missing and allies said she had been snatched off the streets by unidentified men in black.
Kolesnikova, 38, is the only one of the trio of women who fronted Tikhanovskaya’s campaign to remain in Belarus.
Tikhanovskaya left the country under pressure from the authorities and was granted refuge in EU member state Lithuania, while her other campaign partner, Veronika Tsepkalo, is now in Ukraine.

Horror as woman is shot dead by abusive husband inside police station
In a frightening development, a woman was shot dead by her abusive husband inside a police station where she had gone to report him for domestic violence.
The 28-year-old woman was shot dead by her husband inside Madeira Police Station in Mthatha, South Africa. The suspect who is employed by a security company was immediately apprehended and detained by the police officers after he had fired a hail of bullets.
Some people who were in the police station at the time ran for their lives when the shooting started.
Songezo Sanazo, who hails from Lujecweni village in Ngqeleni, said he was at the police station certifying documents when the shooting started. Narrating the frightening experience, Songezo told the publication DispatchLive,
“I was busy having my documents certified when I heard gunshots
“I heard the first one and I thought it was not something serious. But I had to run for cover and hide behind the wall when I heard a second one, third and fourth while other people were running away from the yard screaming. We were all terrified.”
Songezo went on to say that just before the shooting started, he saw a man charging into the charge office at the police station carrying a gun.
The gunman is reported to be employed by Protek Security. He is being detained at the police station until he makes his court appearance.
The Madeira Police Station has since been closed and people are being asked to go to other police stations if they have issues which need law enforcement officials.

Coronavirus patients still suffer lung damage 3 months after leaving hospital –Study
Coronavirus patients admitted to hospital still suffer lung damage three months after they are sent home, a study has found.
Most people’s conditions improve within six weeks but researchers found that some struggled with breathlessness and coughing for much longer.
Researchers at different institutions in Austria’s Tyrolean region asked coronavirus patients who had been admitted to hospital to come back for evaluation six, 12 and 24 weeks after being discharged.
At the time of their first evaluation, more than half of the patients had at least one persistent symptom, predominantly breathlessness and coughing, and CT scans still showed lung damage in 88 per cent.
But by the time of their next visit the symptoms had improved and lung damage was reduced to 56 per cent. It is too early to have results from the evaluations at 24 weeks.
Dr Sabina Sahanic, a clinical PhD student at the University Clinic in Innsbruck and part of the team that carried out the study, said: “The bad news is that people show lung impairment from COVID-19 weeks after discharge.
“The good news is that the impairment tends to ameliorate over time, which suggests the lungs have a mechanism for repairing themselves.”
At the six-week visit, echocardiograms showed that 48 patients (58.5%) had dysfunction of the left ventricle of the heart at the point when it is relaxing and dilating (diastole).
Biological indicators of heart damage, blood clots and inflammation were all significantly elevated.
Dr Sahanic added: “Fortunately, in the Innsbruck cohort, we did not observe any severe coronavirus-associated heart dysfunction in the post-acute phase.
“The diastolic dysfunction that we observed also tended to improve with time.”
This comes as TV presenter Kate Garraway has said ‘the heart of the family has been ripped out’ as her husband Derek Draper struggles to recover from coronavirus.
Her 53-year-old spouse was admitted to hospital in March after being diagnosed and remains seriously ill.
Good Morning Britain presenter Miss Garraway, also 53, returned to work in July but said she is still ‘consumed by fear’ that his condition won’t improve but has had to stay strong for her children’s sake.
“We hope and believe he will come out of it, but we just don’t know,” she told Mail On Sunday’s You magazine.
“The heart of the family has been ripped out and we don’t know if we will ever get it back,” she said.

"According to the man, he left his home to spend the child's birthday with his family.
"The child turned 13 on Tuesday and he said he intended spoiling her on her birthday and wanted to seek employment in the area during the week."
A relative claimed she spotted the teen getting in her neighbour's car just before she went missing.
Her family went to the father-of-four's house while searching for their daughter, only to find he had disappeared.

BBNaija 2020: Erica is weak, I believe you were jazzed – Vee tells Laycon [Video]
BBNaija housemate, Vee on Monday said Erica’s disqualification has vindicated Laycon.
Vee said this to Laycon when he revealed that he found Erica’s earring in the Head of House lounge and gave it to Kiddwaya.
Reacting, Vee said Erica was weak and could not think for herself in the house.
Laycon, who cautioned her for the statement, wondered why Vee had an issue with the disqualified housemate.
Vee, however, warned Laycon to stop making excuses for Erica.
She said “As your friend, you cannot bring any stupid girl to me and say you are in love.”
When Laycon asked what her problem was with Erica, Vee said, “She doesn’t know how to think for herself. She is weak. God forbid I allow you bring any stupid girl to me.
“You are in control of your mind and you are always looking for excuses for this girl, that’s why I said they jazzed you. You have been vindicated, thank you Lord.”
