Doctors get three-month suspension for baby’s death

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal has found two doctors – Iyoha Joseph and Mukaila Oyewumi Oladipo – guilty of negligence in the management of a baby, Oluwole Johnson Peace (now deceased).

In a seven-count charge, the tribunal noted that the doctors were manifestly incompetent in the management of the three-month-old baby and failed to administer the right treatment on the patient.

Delivering judgment in Abuja, tribunal Chairman Prof. Abba Hassan Waziri said Dr. Joseph, who was found guilty of three count charges, did not exhibit reasonable diligence when he prescribed and caused to be administered on the three-month old baby, oral chloroquine, Fansidar and several other drugs.

The chairman said he thereby exposed the baby to multiple anti-malarial and other drugs when the baby had been placed on Artemether injunction.

It also said Oladipo, who was found guilty of a two-count charge, even though he found the patient to be asphyxiated and in obvious respiratory distress, wasted time by taking the patient’s history for more than 30 minutes, rather than attend to the clear case of emergency.

Meghan Markle and Harry 'worth $1m per speech' as leaked document unveils demands

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are reportedly worth $1 million a booking as virtual speakers, while a leaked document outlines the strict control they're allegedly demanding over such engagements.

Before even sending the Duke and Duchess of Sussex an invitation event organisers must specify the fee as well as full sponsorship details, it has been reported.

The four-page 'Virtual Event Request Form' issued by the Harry Walker Agency (HWA) and seen by the Daily Telegraph also asks to know what "connection format" will be used and what the contingency plan is in case there is a technical failure.

The couple - who stepped down as senior royals in March and now live in LA - also reportedly want the final word on who introduces and moderates during their speeches. The Sussexes were reported to have signed up to New York-based speakers' bureau HWA in June, following in the footsteps of the Obamas, Clintons and Oprah Winfrey.

It comes after they signed a reported $150 million deal to produce projects for streaming service Netflix and are said to be able to earn $1 million per engagement.

As part of their divorce settlement with the royals, Harry and Meghan agreed not to engage in commercial activities that might embarrass the Queen.

As such, the form says they require details of all sponsors, regardless of whether they are directly involved with any particular presentation.

"If you were to lose one or more of the above sponsors, would your organisation still be able to move forward with this event?

"What will the audience see on screen? Will you incorporate any branding? What will the speaker see on screen prior to and during their presentation?" it adds.

Joe Exotic says he is being s3xually assaulted by prison guards

Convicted “Tiger King” star Joe Exotic says he was sexually assaulted by prison guards and that’s just one of the reasons President Trump should pardon him, according to a report Tuesday.

The former zoo owner and star of the Netflix docuseries who is serving a 22-year sentence after hiring a hit man to kill a big-cat rival -- wrote a 257-page treatise to Trump on why he deserves to be pardoned and freed from custody in Texas, TMZ said.

“I have been sexually assaulted by jail staff, beat up and tied in a chair to the point the skin came off my arms,” claims the gay 57-year-old prisoner, whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage.

“please be my hero,” Exotic, the fallen star of  “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness,” implores Trump.

“my hands are damaged from the abuse in jail so I’m sorry for the soppy (sic) writing and spelling.”

Prison sources insisted to TMZ that “there was no such assault.”

Online records show Exotic who also was accused of shooting five unwanted tigers in the head to make room for other big cats at his zoo is currently being housed at the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth.

He has previously publicly pleaded for Trump’s help.

Exotic repeated some of his reasons in his latest missive, including that he has severe health problems, while maintaining his innocence.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West 's marriage is on the mend but still needs "lots of work", insiders say.

The couple, who married in 2014, have been embroiled in much public drama lately.

It all started when Kanye made a string of controversial comments and cutting remarks about his wife and her famous family during and after his presidential rally.

It was reported that Kim, 39, and Kanye, 43, were having "crisis talks" after that and Kim was pictured breaking down in tears during a tense chat with her husband in Wyoming.

After speaking out about his mental health issues and bipolar diagnosis, the couple have been working on their relationship behind the scenes, and insiders say while Kanye is in a much better state of mind, there's still a lot of work to be done when it comes to his marriage.

A source told People : "Kim and Kanye are doing well. Kanye is in a better mental state. Their marriage still needs work, but Kim is getting across to him. He is not shutting her out and wants to be with his family."

They added: "Kim continues to be incredibly patient and understanding about Kanye's desire to run for president.

"She just wants to get through the next few months peacefully. She is kind of standing back while Kanye does whatever makes him happy."

Kim and Kanye spent the weekend together in Atlanta, Georgia with their kids North, seven, Saint, four, Chicago, two, and Psalm, 15 months, for Kanye's Sunday Service.

US to block key exports from China's Xinjiang region

The US is to block key exports from China's Xinjiang region due to allegations that they are produced using forced labour.

The proposed bans include cotton and tomato products which are two of China's major commodity exports.

The Trump administration has been ratcheting up pressure on China for its treatment of Xinjiang's Uighur Muslims.

In recent years China has massively increased security in Xinjiang, citing a threat of separatism and terrorism.

By some estimates up to a million people have been detained without trial for minor infractions, in what China says are re-education camps.

Kiddwaya doesn’t need N85m prize money – Terry Waya

Terry Waya, father of Big Brother Naija lockdown housemate, Kiddwaya, has said his son does not need the N85m prize money.

The Benue-born billionaire said part of the prize money would be given to charity if Kiddwaya emerged winner of the reality television show.

He disclosed this yesterday during an Instagram interview with veteran journalist, Dele Momodu, while reacting to Erica’s disqualification from the show.

“My son does not need BBNaija money, we will give it to charity if he wins,” Terry Waya said.

Recall that Terry Waya had promised to ensure his son split the prize money with Erica if he wins the reality television show.

Erica was disqualified from BBNaija show for repeatedly flouting house rules.

Among other offences she was found guilty of, Erica poured water on the Head of House bed in order to stop Prince, her deputy, from sleeping on it.

However, Mr Waya commended Erica for having his son’s interest, adding that she was disqualified for trying to defend Kiddwaya.

Social gatherings above six now banned in England

Social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal in England from Monday - with some exemptions - amid a steep rise in coronavirus cases.

A law change will ban larger groups meeting anywhere socially indoors or outdoors, the government said.

But it will not apply to schools, workplaces or Covid-secure weddings, funerals and organised team sports.

It will be enforced through a £100 fine if people fail to comply, doubling on each offence up to a maximum of £3,200.

Several exemptions apply to the new rules - which come into force on 14 September, with households and support bubbles bigger than six people unaffected.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to give further details at a Downing Street news conference later on Wednesday.

Oxford University vaccine trial paused after participant falls ill

Final clinical trials for a coronavirus vaccine, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, have been put on hold after a participant had an adverse reaction in the UK.

AstraZeneca described it as a "routine" pause in the case of "an unexplained illness".

The outcome of vaccine trials is being closely watched around the world.

The AstraZeneca-Oxford University vaccine is seen as a strong contender among dozens being developed globally.

Hopes have been high that the vaccine might be one of the first to come on the market, following successful phase 1 and 2 testing.

Its move to Phase 3 testing in recent weeks has involved some 30,000 participants in the US as well as in the UK, Brazil and South Africa. Phase 3 trials in vaccines often involve thousands of participants and can last several years.

Stat News, the health website which first broke the story, said details of the UK participant's adverse reaction were not immediately known, but quoted a source as saying they were expected to recover.

Kaduna LG bans Almajiri system after 8 die in boat mishap

Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State has suspended the Almajiri system of education after the death of eight almajirai in a boat mishap, the LG chairman, Alh. Sabo Aminu Anchau, told Arewa Trust Weekly.

Arewa Trust Weekly reports that Governor Nasir el-Rufai had, in April, banned the system in the state when he commenced the repatriation of almajirai to their home states.

Anchau said the ban in Kubau LGA included all other forms of child labour and exploitation, adding that the decision was not meant to stop Qur’anic education, but to arrest the abuse of pupils in the name of schooling.

In the “Last farming season, the council lost eight almajirai in the Gilmor River.

“Their teacher had taken them to work at his farm across the river.

“On their way back, the canoe conveying them developed technical fault with its engine in the middle of the river.

“As the water current rose, some of the children jumped into the river and unfortunately eight of them drowned,” he said.

He described as unacceptable the situation where some teachers used the system to exploit the young boys by turning them into child-labourers.

“The almajiri school teachers are posing a serious challenge to the council’s efforts at providing basic education to all the under aged.

‘We are trying, in collaboration with the state government, to make the system more effective and decent,” he said.

The chairman stated also that in order to reverse a situation where pupils took lessons on the floor, the council has constructed additional classrooms, distributed about 650 chairs and involved communities in the running of the schools.

The Commander, 4 Special Forces Command, Doma, Nasarawa state, Maj. -Gen. Moundhey Ali, told newsmen on Tuesday that Gana was killed along Gbese-Gboko-Makurdi road following an exchange of gunfire.

The Benue State Government had in 2015 granted amnesty to over 500 persons including Gana, who were terrorising parts of Benue and Taraba states, but most of them relapsed into criminality.

Gana was later in 2017, declared wanted by the Police while the Benue placed a N10 million bounty on him.

Ali said, “About 12:00 hours on Tuesday, we received strategic information on the movement of the dreaded bandit Terwase Akwaza Agbadu AKA Gana along Gbese-Gboko-Makurdi road.

“Troops of Operation ‘Ayem Akpatuma III’ moved swiftly and mounted roadblocks along the routes.

“At about 13:00 hours, there was an engagement with the convoy of Gana, a shoot out ensued and the bandit was killed.”

The Commander also said that 40 armed members of Gana’s gang were captured during the operation.

He said the captured gang members were in Army custody and would be handed over to the appropriate authority for prosecution.

Ali also disclosed that several rifles, pump-action guns, ammunition, charms, and explosives among other items were recovered from the gang.

He said Gana’s corpse had been deposited in a hospital mortuary which he did not disclose.

The Duchess of Cambridge's brother James has revealed he has been forced to cancel his wedding twice during the coronavirus lockdown.

Kate's little brother was set to marry his French fiancée Alizee Thevenet this year after getting engaged in September 2019, but like thousands of couples up and down the country they had to put their plans on hold.

The news was sure to be a blow for Kate and the rest of the family, who would have been looking forward to welcoming Alizee to the family.

However James isn't letting the disappointment get him down, and posted a lovely Instagram message gushing about his bride-to-be.

Sharing snaps of their romantic getaway to Italy, he wrote: "It’s a year since I asked Alizee to marry me… what a year it’s been!

"Two homes, lockdown, two attempts at a wedding, a litter of [puppy emoji], launching of new company, a beard shave and much more but the best part is that I get to share it with you  @alizeethevenet  and I can’t wait to take on whatever the future holds for us.

"We managed to escape to Italy for a quick dip in the the sea, lots of [pasta and wine emojis] and now ready to face the world again."

When the original wedding was cancelled a source told the Mail : "It's very sad, but it's just not practical to hold it in this crisis.

5 to die by hanging for kidnap, murder of Shell staff in Rivers

Five persons were, yesterday, sentenced to death by hanging by a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on conviction of kidnapping and murder of a Shell staff, Anthony Okoro.

The five out of seven persons in suit number PHC/324/2017, Oluchi Charles (1st defendant), Miracle Anumuna (2nd defendant), Ifeanyi Simon (3rd defendant), Koko Basset (4th defendant) and Uchenna Stanley Amaechi (7th defendant), were convicted of the 10 charges preferred against them by the Inspector General of Police bordering on conspiracy, stealing, armed robbery, kidnapping and murder.

Chukwudi Etete (5th defendant) and Anthony Ugwu (6th defendant), the remaining two persons mentioned in the suit, were discharged and acquitted by the court.

The suspects had on May 29, 2016 attacked the home of one Anthony Okoro, a staff of Shell Petroleum Development Company, in Woji area of Port Harcourt.

The suspects reportedly shot the victim and carried his body away with his Range Rover SUV.

The deceased’s Kia Optima car, television sets, infinix phone and other valuables were also taken away by the suspects.

The trial judge, Justice George Omereji, yesterday, held that the prosecution was able to prove the case that the first to fourth and seventh defendants were as guilty as charged in the matter. Omereji discharging and acquitting Etete and Ugwu stated that the prosecution could not prove that the duo knew about the crime, rather they bought phones belonging to the victim by mistakes.

He also held that the prosecution proved the case of conspiracy against the suspects in law, adding that it was proven that the suspects had met at Genesis area of Woji in Port Harcourt and planned the operation and kidnap of Anthony Okoro.

The trial judge also noted that the prosecution also proved that the death of the victim was caused by the suspects, regretting that Anthony Okoro was shot on his arm and taken away with his cars and other valuables by the suspects.

However, Omereji, who based his ruling on Section 410 of the Administration of Criminal Justice 2011, sentenced the five convicted persons to death by hanging, adding that they should be held on the rope till they are confirmed dead.
