UK minister under scrutiny for attacking Nigeria over P&ID court case

United Kingdom’s secretary of state for the home department,Priti Patel, has come under scrutiny over her comments on the $10 billion arbitration fine case between Nigeria and the Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID).

Following last week’s UK court ruling in favour of Nigeria, a current affairs news magazine in Britain published an article on the involvement of Patel in the case.

P&ID had sued Nigeria for allegedly breaching the terms of a gas supply and processing agreement contract it reportedly signed in 2010.

In January 2017, a UK tribunal ordered Nigeria to pay P&ID $6.6 billion as damages, as well as pre- and post-judgment interest, all of which amounted to about $10 billion.

But the country initiated legal proceedings to challenge the ruling, alleging that the contract was fraught with corrupt dealings.

In an article criticising Nigeria for taking step to appeal the arbitral award, Patel had said the country must “shape up and honour its obligations” if it wants to take part in global markets.

“In Nigeria, the unhappy experience of the firm founded by two Irishmen, Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) … demonstrates the risk that businesses will face in Nigeria,”she had written in the City A.M.

She had also accused Nigeria of flouting international law and convention, adding: “Investors must consider this long-running scandal and weigh this obstinance against Nigeria’s mishandled economic potential.”

However, in a turn of events last week, a UK court granted Nigeria an extension of time and relief from sanctions in the $10 billion fine after ruling that it is “necessary to consider a considerable amount of the material to decide firstly, whether, as Nigeria contended, there is a prima facie case of fraud and how strong that case is, and secondly, the steps Nigeria took to investigate the alleged fraud from late 2015.”

According to TheCable yesterday, “Patel was too busy to explain to the Eye how she became involved in this crucial development issue – but her words sit uneasily now given last week’s commercial court ruling in favour of Nigeria,” it wrote.

BBNaija 2020: Laycon, Vee mock Ozo, Nengi

Vee and Laycon were caught on camera last night busy mocking fellow housemates, Ozo and Nengi.

Vee believes what Ozo and Nengi are parading as a relationship is “bullshit.”

According to her, there was no content in their so-called being around each other during the day while they (Ozo and Nengi) sleep in different beds at night.

Ozo is always following Nengi about in the house, with both housemates usually seen together.

And talking about them last night, Vee began the conversation by saying, “This is bullsh*t that Ozo is doing…”

In response, Laycon said, “They can’t stay away from each other for one hour.”

Vee added, “It’s bullshit.

“They can’t stay away from each other during the day but they still sleep on different beds during the night.” Laycon and Vee burst into laughter.

Zimbabwe nurses call off strike after three months

Thousands of striking nurses on Wednesday called off their strike over pay and protective gear, three months after walking out of public hospital wards, their leader said.

Enock Dongo, president of the 15,000-member Zimbabwe Nurses Association, said they had decided to end the strike to allow the newly-appointed health minister an opportunity to attend to their complaints.

The country’s vice president, retired general Constantino Chiwenga, was last month appointed health minister.

He replaced Obadiah Moyo, who was sacked after being charged with corruption over the illegal awarding of a $20-million contract for coronavirus testing kits and protective gear.

“We have encouraged our members to return to work and give the new minister a chance,” Dongo told AFP.

“He wants us to start negotiating while going to work. We hope he will reciprocate by addressing our grievances,” he said.

The nurses downed tools in June over low pay amid galloping inflation – now hovering over 800 percent – which has eroded wages and salaries as the economy of the southern African country totters.

They also complained about inadequate protection equipment and being forced to recycle surgical face masks.

They were later joined in the strike by senior and junior doctors, who are still not back at work, leaving hospitals thinly staffed in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

BBNaija 2020: ‘You are rude’ – Nengi, Vee engage in argument

Big Brother Naija housemates Vee and Nengi, on Wednesday night engaged in an argument.

It all started after Vee blamed Nengi for losing ‘Patricia task’.

According to her, Nengi and Ozo did not concentrate during group tasks, adding that she was fond of taking out time to be with Ozo which led to their team’s loss.

Nengi disagreed with her and got angry about her statement.

Neo and Ozo said it was sarcasm but Nengi didn’t see it that way.

She said: “There are certain things you don’t joke with and it didn’t sound nice to me.

“You are rude and I know that was not a sarcastic joke. It was not nice, nobody wants to fail any task intentionally.

“All she said was unnecessary.”

Vee, however, said she didn’t mean no harm, adding that it was just a sarcastic joke.

Since then both housemates have not spoken to each other.

“We are suffering” – UNICAL lecturers protest

Members of the University of Calabar chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) protested non-payment of their allowances at the university premises on Wednesday.

Addressing the protesters, the Chairman of the chapter, Dr John Edor, said the allowances had been owed for several years.

“We are demanding full payment of our entitlements from the management of the University of Calabar.

“Some of the entitlements include promotion arrears, fellowship and conference allowances, and other entitlements.

“Some of the arrears have been owed for more than five years, depending on the individual and all efforts to make the management pay the arrears have failed.

“So, we have no option than to embark on a peaceful protest. When this fails to yield the desired results, we will carry our mats and pillows to occupy the University of Calabar. It is our common heritage.’’

Edor accused authorities of the university of being insensitive to the plight of lecturers even in the face of the current face-off with the Federal Government over the IPPIS issue.

“Even when the Federal Government has refused to pay our salaries, the management could not help us.

“We can no longer meet our family obligations. Lecturers are suffering in the midst of plenty,’’ he said.

However, no principal officer of the university was available to listen to the protesting lecturers.

They sold us like yam, used us like machine — Lebanon returnees

No fewer than 25 women of Osun state origin have been rescued from Lebanon where they claimed that they were enslaved for over a year.

Recounting their ordeals on arrival at the state ministry of women affairs in Osogbo on Wednesday, the returnees said that they had been traded like yam and used like machines by their Lebanese masters.

The ladies said they were lured to Lebanon under the pretext that they would get decent jobs and earn good salary.

One of the returnees, Miss Ibukun Ayobami told Daily Trust that their agents traded them like food stuff and that those that bought them used like like machines for domestic house work.

Ibukun said her agent sold her to a family and that she was working 21 hours everyday and only have three hours for herself.

She said when she demanded for her salary after few months, the master became angry and returned her to the agent and demanded refund from the agent.

She said the agent was furious and beat her mercilessly and also locked her in a room for two weeks without food.

“When the agent open the door after two weeks and asked if I’m ready to work, i had no option. That was how i was sold to another master and i was working there until i escaped to the Nigerian embassy in Lebanon. I’m grateful to Osun State Governor for bringing me back home.”

Another returnee, Mariam Adedolapo also gave the same account, saying that her slave master in Lebanon always threaten to kill her.

“The man the agent sold me to in Lebanon always remind me that he bought me and that he can do anything he likes with me because he paid for my life. He always tell me that he can kill me if he likes”, Maryam said.

The returnees were received on behalf of the State Government of Osun by the Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Affairs, Mrs Olubukola Olaboopo, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Diaspora Matters, Titi Fadahunsi-Ajayi.

Olaboopo said the state government has put necessary measures in place for their reintegration into their communities and the State entirely.

In her words: “You are safe in your State now. The government will do all that it can to ensure that you have a good life going forward.

“There is no harm in trying. The fact that you went abroad to hustle does not mean that you should be stigmatized. We as a state are very proud of you for taking a bold step and trying something new.

“You have had the experience first hand, and you are going to be the state’s ambassador on issues of trafficking. The State Government expects you to put in diligence in serving your motherland. You have seen the other side of life, and of course, you can see that there is no greener pasture anywhere, but home.

“We have organised an empowerment Programme for you, and your resource persons are on ground to take you through the training”, Olaboopo stated.

Kim Kardashian called in a favour from her sisters Kourtney and Khloe for her latest KKW Fragrance collection.

Each rocking the exact same brunette bob hairdo, the Kardashian sisters looked sensational as they even matched their makeup looks for the promotional photoshoot.

What's more, the girls each wore very similar silk outfits for the shoot, only differing in colours.

The striking similarities between the trio had fans in disbelief.

One shocked fan penned: "Not sure about the hair...but omg they look the same."

Another wrote: "This is sum powerpuff girls type of energy."

A third added: "Is it me or did anyone else need to double take ???"

While a fourth agreed, writing: "Yup. The hair threw me off."

Doctors get three-month suspension for baby’s death

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal has found two doctors – Iyoha Joseph and Mukaila Oyewumi Oladipo – guilty of negligence in the management of a baby, Oluwole Johnson Peace (now deceased).

In a seven-count charge, the tribunal noted that the doctors were manifestly incompetent in the management of the three-month-old baby and failed to administer the right treatment on the patient.

Delivering judgment in Abuja, tribunal Chairman Prof. Abba Hassan Waziri said Dr. Joseph, who was found guilty of three count charges, did not exhibit reasonable diligence when he prescribed and caused to be administered on the three-month old baby, oral chloroquine, Fansidar and several other drugs.

The chairman said he thereby exposed the baby to multiple anti-malarial and other drugs when the baby had been placed on Artemether injunction.

It also said Oladipo, who was found guilty of a two-count charge, even though he found the patient to be asphyxiated and in obvious respiratory distress, wasted time by taking the patient’s history for more than 30 minutes, rather than attend to the clear case of emergency.

Meghan Markle and Harry 'worth $1m per speech' as leaked document unveils demands

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are reportedly worth $1 million a booking as virtual speakers, while a leaked document outlines the strict control they're allegedly demanding over such engagements.

Before even sending the Duke and Duchess of Sussex an invitation event organisers must specify the fee as well as full sponsorship details, it has been reported.

The four-page 'Virtual Event Request Form' issued by the Harry Walker Agency (HWA) and seen by the Daily Telegraph also asks to know what "connection format" will be used and what the contingency plan is in case there is a technical failure.

The couple - who stepped down as senior royals in March and now live in LA - also reportedly want the final word on who introduces and moderates during their speeches. The Sussexes were reported to have signed up to New York-based speakers' bureau HWA in June, following in the footsteps of the Obamas, Clintons and Oprah Winfrey.

It comes after they signed a reported $150 million deal to produce projects for streaming service Netflix and are said to be able to earn $1 million per engagement.

As part of their divorce settlement with the royals, Harry and Meghan agreed not to engage in commercial activities that might embarrass the Queen.

As such, the form says they require details of all sponsors, regardless of whether they are directly involved with any particular presentation.

"If you were to lose one or more of the above sponsors, would your organisation still be able to move forward with this event?

"What will the audience see on screen? Will you incorporate any branding? What will the speaker see on screen prior to and during their presentation?" it adds.

Convicted “Tiger King” star Joe Exotic says he was sexually assaulted by prison guards and that’s just one of the reasons President Trump should pardon him, according to a report Tuesday.

The former zoo owner and star of the Netflix docuseries who is serving a 22-year sentence after hiring a hit man to kill a big-cat rival -- wrote a 257-page treatise to Trump on why he deserves to be pardoned and freed from custody in Texas, TMZ said.

“please be my hero,” Exotic, the fallen star of  “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness,” implores Trump.

“my hands are damaged from the abuse in jail so I’m sorry for the soppy (sic) writing and spelling.”

He has previously publicly pleaded for Trump’s help.

US to block key exports from China's Xinjiang region

The US is to block key exports from China's Xinjiang region due to allegations that they are produced using forced labour.

The proposed bans include cotton and tomato products which are two of China's major commodity exports.

The Trump administration has been ratcheting up pressure on China for its treatment of Xinjiang's Uighur Muslims.

In recent years China has massively increased security in Xinjiang, citing a threat of separatism and terrorism.

By some estimates up to a million people have been detained without trial for minor infractions, in what China says are re-education camps.

Kiddwaya doesn’t need N85m prize money – Terry Waya

Terry Waya, father of Big Brother Naija lockdown housemate, Kiddwaya, has said his son does not need the N85m prize money.

The Benue-born billionaire said part of the prize money would be given to charity if Kiddwaya emerged winner of the reality television show.

He disclosed this yesterday during an Instagram interview with veteran journalist, Dele Momodu, while reacting to Erica’s disqualification from the show.

“My son does not need BBNaija money, we will give it to charity if he wins,” Terry Waya said.

Recall that Terry Waya had promised to ensure his son split the prize money with Erica if he wins the reality television show.

Erica was disqualified from BBNaija show for repeatedly flouting house rules.

Among other offences she was found guilty of, Erica poured water on the Head of House bed in order to stop Prince, her deputy, from sleeping on it.

However, Mr Waya commended Erica for having his son’s interest, adding that she was disqualified for trying to defend Kiddwaya.

Social gatherings above six now banned in England

Social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal in England from Monday - with some exemptions - amid a steep rise in coronavirus cases.

A law change will ban larger groups meeting anywhere socially indoors or outdoors, the government said.

But it will not apply to schools, workplaces or Covid-secure weddings, funerals and organised team sports.

It will be enforced through a £100 fine if people fail to comply, doubling on each offence up to a maximum of £3,200.

Several exemptions apply to the new rules - which come into force on 14 September, with households and support bubbles bigger than six people unaffected.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to give further details at a Downing Street news conference later on Wednesday.
