Woman ‘deliberately cut off own hand’ to scam insurance companies

A woman who ‘cut off her own hand with a circular saw’ in order to claim money on insurance has been jailed.

Slovenian Julija Adlesic, 22, was sentenced to two years in prison while her boyfriend, who was accused of orchestrating the scam, was jailed for three. 

A court in the capital city of Ljubijana heard how Adlesic was accused of staging the incident, together with three others, earlier this year.

The group signed life and injury insurance contracts with five different insurance companies and then agreed to cut off the hand at the wrist. 

When she was taken to the hospital, Adlesic claimed to have injured herself while sawing branches.

They were hoping to get around 380,000 euros in compensation and a life-long monthly payout of some 3,000 euros, according to police.

The group intentionally left the hand behind rather than bringing it with them to the hospital, hoping to receive three times higher compensation for permanent disability, police had said.

But authorities managed to pick up the hand in time, and doctors in a hospital in the capital Ljubljana were able to reattach it.

Prosecutors said that days before the incident, Adlesic’s partner searched for information on the internet about how artificial hands work. They claimed that this was another proof that it was done deliberately.

During the trial, the woman claimed innocence, saying she would never have cut off her hand deliberately.

‘No one wants to be crippled,’ she told the court. ‘My youth has been destroyed. I lost my hand at the age of 20. Only I know how it happened.’

The trial has attracted lots of public and media attention in the small Alpine state.

‘We believe the sentences are fair and appropriate, and will serve their purpose,’ judge Marjeta Dvornik said.

The average monthly net income is around 1,000 euros in Slovenia.

Nigerian boxer Umar Sadiq reportedly 'hospitalised' after defeat to Fyodor Chudinov

British-Nigerian boxer Umar Sadiq has been hospitalised after falling ill following his defeat to Fyodor Chudinov, according to reports from Russia.

Sadiq reportedly began to cough up blood after his defeat by technical knockout, having needed an oxygen mask straight after the fight in Khimki, near Moscow.

The 32-year-old super middleweight was disorientated following his defeat and was given immediate medical assistance by doctors, according to TASS.

The Russian publication says an ambulance was then called after he fell ill during routine doping control.

"Umar was hospitalized," a source was quoted as saying, with the report adding that the boxer began to "cough up blood".

No further details on his medical condition were made available.

The Ilford boxer, who was born in Nigeria, counts six knockouts among his 10 professional wins, and has been gearing up for British title shot against Lerrone Richards.

Naomi Osaka defeats Azarenka, claim second US title

Naomi Osaka fought back from a bruising first set loss to overcome Belarusian Victoria Azarenka to win her second US Open Grand Slam title, in three years.

After shaking off a 1-6 thrashing in the first set, the Japanese star rallied to beat her opponent 6-3 6-3 in the last two sets, to win the championship.

The Athlete is the highest paid female tennis player. She is ranked No. 10  player  by the Women’s Tennis Association and is the first Asian player to hold the top ranking in singles.

She is a three-time Grand Slam singles champion, and is the reigning champion at the US Open.

Edin Dzeko & Amra welcome baby girl

Edin Dzeko, a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Serie A club Roma, has welcomed the birth of their third child with his wife Amra Dzeko.

Dzeko shared the photo of Amra and the new baby girl named “Dalia” on his Twitter page on Saturday.

“Welcome to the world, our little flower DALIA,” Dzeko captioned the adorable photo.

Dalia is the third child of Amra and Edin Dzeko who already have a four-year-old girl Una and a two-year-old boy Dani.

However, AS. Roma, have also congratulated the famous Bosnia couple.

“Congratulations to Amra and @EdDzeko on the birth of their daughter, Dalia!,” the club wrote on Twitter.

Civilians killed in Mali explosion

 

Six civilians have died in an explosion in Mali.

The incident occurred near Boura, Mali’s southern region of Sikasso.

A local security source confirmed the blast to Xinhua on Saturday.

The officer said an ambulance carrying a patient from Boura hit an IED killing six people on board.

On the driver survived but was “severely injured and evacuated to Koutiala (south)’’.

The victims included a pregnant woman and a two-year-old kid.

On Friday, the bodies of the two staff of the Environment Ministry were found.

They were abducted kidnapped by armed men on Thursday.

The Malian army has been targeted in recent weeks, resulting in the death of 21 soldiers.

Truck crushes gatekeeper to death in Ogun

A man, who was identified as a gatekeeper in one of the private hospitals in Atan, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government area of Ogun State, has been crushed to death by a truck that fell on him on Saturday.

The man was crushed at the Atan market junction, along the Sango-Idiroko road.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement (TRACE) Corps has confirmed the accident to DAILY POST, saying it happened around 11:50am.

TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the green Howo Sino truck, with registration number, AKM 560 ZT, was loaded with mud.

Akinbiyi blamed the accident on brake failure, coupled with loss of control.

“Learnt the truck developed a brake failure, while inbound Idiroko, lost control in the process and fell on a passer-by, at Atan market, who is a gatekeeper at a private hospital at Atan.

“The driver and the motorboy thereafter reported themselves to Atan Divisional Police Command, where they are presently with the vehicle,” Akinbiyi stated.

It was gathered that the body of the deceased has been buried by his relatives.

I killed my aunty because she’s a witch – Man confesses in

Dansu Asogba, a 23-year-old indigene of Ogun State has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing his 60-year-old aunt, Iyabo Dansu over alleged witchcraft.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ogun State Police Spokesperson, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect was arrested following a report by two children of the victim at the Ipokia Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to Oyeyemi, the children had reported that they were informed on August 22 that their mother, who was not suffering from any illness had died.

Oyeyemi hinted that the children of the deceased “stated further that since they were not suspecting any foul play, they decided to bury her without necessarily reporting to the police. 

“But immediately after the burial, they heard information that the suspect, who is a nephew to the deceased was seen in her house on that fateful day, and shortly after he left, the woman was declared dead.”

This, he said, aroused the suspicion of residents as they threatened to carry out a traditional ritual to expose the killer.

Hearing the determination of the community to go spiritual about the death of the woman, Asogba reportedly came out to confess being the one responsible for her death.

The DPO Ipokia Division, SP Adebayo Hakeem, was said to have detailed his men to the scene where the suspect was arrested.

“On interrogation, he admitted killing the deceased, but claimed that he did so because of his belief that the deceased was responsible for the death of his first child and the subsequent miscarriage suffered by his wife.

“He confessed further that it was an iron rod he used to hit the woman on the neck which resulted to her death,” Oyeyemi said.

Meanwhile, the Ogun Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, has ordered that the case be transferred transfer to the homicide section of the State CIID for further investigation.

Daddy Freeze apologizes to David Oyedepo

Ifedayo Olarinde, aka, Daddy Freeze, has finally apologized to the founder and presiding Bishop of the Megachurch Faith Tabernacle, and Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners’ Chapel International, Bishop David Oyedepo.

Freeze had in a video he made last three years ago, criticized Oyedepo’s teaching, calling him a ‘bald-headed fowl’.

The video however, resurfaced this year and generated negative comments against Freeze. Reacting, the Founder and General Overseer of Salvation Ministries, David Ibiyeomie, condemned Freeze for questioning and criticizing Oyedepo. He accused him of insulting Oyedepo.

Ibiyeomie called Freeze ‘a bastard’ son of a Somalian and a half caste, threatening to kill and tear him into pieces.

The outspoken Freeze, Saturday decided to apologize, saying that he did not intend to insult the personality of Bishop Oyedepo.

In his recent video shared by ex-media aide to Goodluck Jonathan, Pastor Reno Omokri, Freeze was seen apologizing to Oyedepo, saying ‘he did not in any way intend to dishonor, disrespect, or disregard the person of the Bishop’.

Emhasizing on the video Reno said: As I promised in my video this morning, Ifedayo Olarinde, AKA Daddy Freeze, has now apologised to Bishop Oyedepo over his comments of 3 years ago. He recognised his error and sought forgiveness.

“Scripture says if a brother sins and seeks forgiveness, forgive him 70 times 7 times! I must stress that that video was done 3 years ago. The man has changed. It took great courage for him to do what he has now done, and for the sake of peace and unity in the body of Christ, I urge all those who have had an issue with him to love like Christ.

Most wanted Rivers criminal Boboski dies hours after arrest

Boboski, the most wanted suspected kidnapper, armed robber and murderer, whose real name is Honest Diigbara, has died from bullet wounds few hours after he was arrested and paraded at the Rivers State Police Command  headquarters, Port Harcourt.

Boboski and his second in Command who were obviously groaning in pains while they were being paraded were drenched in blood sustained from bullet wounds.

The notorious gang Leader became lifeless in the presence of journalists and Police officers while they were being paraded.

Boboski, who had been on the Police Watch list and declared wanted by the State Government with a Bounty of N30 million placed on him by Governor Nyesom Wike was arrested in the early hours of Saturday, September 12, 2020, in a sting operation of the Command with the assistance of a local security outfit in the area.

According to the Police Commissioner CP Joseph Mukan, “he was arrested through credible information at Korokoro Community in Tai Local Government Area , where he was with his gang of killers.

“On sighting the Police they engaged us and in a return fire, his driver was fatally wounded, while he was arrested alive.”

Conor McGregor ARRESTED in Corsica

UFC star Conor McGregor has reportedly been taken into custody in Corsica for alleged indecent exposure and attempted sexual assault - but 'vigorously' denies the explosive accusations against him.

According to the AFP news agency, the Irishman was arrested following the incident.  

The prosecutor's office wrote in a statement: 'Following a complaint filed on September 10 denouncing acts that could be described as attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition, Mr. Conor Anthony McGregor was the subject of a hearing by the police.' 

No other details have been given on the charges against him at present. 

A representative for McGregor has told TMZ: 'Conor McGregor vigorously denies any accusations of misconduct.

'He has been interviewed and released.'

McGregor was recently pictured attending a lavish event in the region, on the port of Calvi, alongside his fiancee Dee Devlin on Friday night.

Oxford vaccine trials to resume in UK after volunteer fell ill

Oxford University has confirmed that clinical trials of its Covid-19 vaccine will resume in the UK.

It is being developed with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, who said the late-stage studies were briefly being halted on Thursday for an investigation into a reported side effect in a patient.

The vaccine is one of the leading contenders among the dozens in development around the world, and is being tested in thousands of people in Britain and the US as well as in smaller study groups in Brazil and South America.

Oxford University said in a statement ‘it is expected that some participants will become unwell’ in large trials like this one.

That view was echoed by the Government’s chief scientific adviser last week, who said what had happened in the trial was not unusual.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock welcomed the restart of the trials.

He tweeted: ‘Good news for everyone the Oxford vaccine trials are back up and running. This pause shows we will always put safety first. We will back our scientists to deliver an effective vaccine as soon as safely possible.’

The Oxford University statement read: ‘The ongoing randomised controlled clinical trials of the Oxford coronavirus vaccine ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 will resume across all UK clinical trial sites.

‘Globally some 18,000 individuals have received study vaccines as part of the trial.

‘In large trials such as this, it is expected that some participants will become unwell and every case must be carefully evaluated to ensure careful assessment of safety.

On Sunday September 6 our standard review process triggered a study pause to vaccination across all of our global trials to allow the review of safety data by an independent safety review committee, and the national regulators.

‘All routine follow-up appointments continued as normal during this period.

‘The independent review process has concluded and following the recommendations of both the independent safety review committee and the UK regulator, the MHRA, the trials will recommence in the UK.’

No details about the patient or the nature of the side effect were given.

But the New York Times has previously reported the patient had been diagnosed with transverse myelitis, an inflammatory syndrome which affects the spinal cord and is often sparked by viral infections.

Temporary holds on large medical studies are not uncommon, and looking into any unexpected reactions is a mandatory part of safety testing.

Two other vaccines are in huge, final-stage tests in the United States, one made by Moderna and the other by Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech.

Despite some figures, such as US President Donald Trump, insisting a vaccine will be ready in a matter of months, Oxford University has said a vaccine might not be ready before 2022.

Serena Williams opts out of Italian Open over injury

Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week’s Italian Open citing the Achilles issue that bothered her in a loss to Victoria Azarenka in the U.S. Open semifinals.

Organisers of the Foro Italico announced Williams absence Saturday.

Williams, a four-time champion in Rome, took a medical timeout for a tape job on her Achilles during her three-set loss on Thursday.

“I regretfully must withdraw from the (Italian Open) due to an Achilles strain,” Williams said.

“I’m so humbled by the continuous support from my fans in Rome and I look forward to making my return soon.”

The Italian Open, which was rescheduled from May due to the coronavirus pandemic, begins Monday.

Azarenka remains entered for Rome.

In the men’s tournament, U.S. Open finalists Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev withdrew, as did Daniil Medvedev, who lost to Thiem in the semifinals in New York.

Nine-time champion Rafael Nadal headlines the field in the Italian capital, marking his return to tennis after a seven-month layoff.

The Spaniard has been practicing in Rome for several days.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic, who was disqualified from the U.S. Open, is also entered.

The clay-court tournament in Rome is a warmup event for the French Open, which starts Sept. 27.

Photos in the past have shown that Kim might have been harbouring a secret 'sixth toe' but she has tackled this head on with a video to prove otherwise.

The KKW Beauty founder is hoping that she has put this debate to bed, once and for all, with proof that she has five toes.

Speaking out on a video that she posted to her Instagram Story, Kim said: "Okay, so everyone thinks that I have six toes, and it’s really wild.”

The KUWTK star then counted out her little piggies for all her fans to see and showing that there truly is no 'mystery' sixth toe on her foot.

Having done that, she then showed why the rumour started in the first place by explaining what happens when she puts her foot flat on the floor.

Kim explained: “But it’s this part of my foot that when I wear a shoe just like this, it like smashes down right here.

"And in a picture - I don’t know why - that looks like a sixth toe.

"I hope that answered my sixth toe question because I only have five toes on each foot.”

Speculation has been around for years but it had come to the fore again recently when Kim's friend Monica posted a photo of herself with Kim and La La Anthony.

In the pic, Kim has her foot pressed firmly to the floor and fans started going wild on social media about her "six toes".

Terry Waya, the father of Kiddwaya, has disclosed that Erica is yet to pick his calls since her disqualifcation.

He added he sent her SMS, which she has not replied as well.

He however said Kiddwaya's elder brother has been in touch with Erica, which he said is gratifying.

Waya made the disclosures in a live interview on Instagram with BBC Africa pidgin.

He said: “I con send message to her to tell her to take am easy, that it is not the end of the world because since she left she has not been taking calls, so I sent her a text message to calm down and Kiddwaya’s senior brother is talking to her, so that is not a problem.

Canada reports zero COVID-19 deaths for first time since March

Canada reported zero COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours for the first time since March 15, according to public health agency data released late on Friday.

Canada’s death toll from the pandemic stood at 9,163 as of Sept. 11, the same as the number of the deaths reported on Sept. 10, government data showed. The number of positive cases rose by 702 to 135,626 on Sept. 11 from the previous day, the data showed.

With most provinces easing lockdown restrictions and as schools reopen for in-person classes, Canada’s infections have seen a mild pick-up in recent days. Authorities have been on high alert to avoid fresh outbreaks, and provinces including British Columbia have imposed new curbs to tackle the spread of the virus.

Still, Canada’s situation looks relatively healthy compared to its southern neighbor. Across the border in the United States, more than 190,000 people have died from the pandemic and more than 6.38 million people have been infected.

Canada’s experience dealing with SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, helped health officials be better prepared. SARS killed 44 people in Canada, the only country outside Asia to report deaths from that outbreak in 2002-2003.

Canada’s first recorded case of coronavirus was in Toronto, on Jan. 25. Both Ontario, the country’s most populous province, and neighboring Quebec turned into the hot spots for COVID-19 infections.

Researchers say Men who use Viagra may experience Flatulence

According to research by watchdog the Medicines and Healthcare products ­Regulatory Agency (MHRA), taking Viagra could have some unwanted side-effects, including flatulence.

Other symptoms include lip swelling, while seven people claimed to have fainted after taking it, according to a report by The Mirror.

Also, there are 555 possible side-effects, but it’s not clear that they are all linked to Viagra.

Hearing loss is another effect reported by 10 people, and Playboy boss Hugh Hefner claimed the drug was affecting his hearing before his death aged 91.

The MHRA records the possible effects of drugs in order to highlight dangers.

The manufacturer of the anti-impotence drug said its safety record is “well established”.

UK Meds, an online pharmacy based in Nottingham, reported a 23% rise in orders of Viagra at the start of lockdown, as people had more time on their hands.

Manufacturer Pfizer has defended the drug, saying most people who had side-effects were taking it for high blood pressure.

Toots Hibbert, Jamaican reggae legend, dies aged 77

Frederick Nathaniel “Toots” Hibbert, Jamaican singer and songwriter, known as the leader for the reggae and ska band Toots & the Maytals, has passed away. He was 77.

Hibbert’s 1968 song “Do the Reggay” is widely credited as the genesis of the name for Reggae music.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts to announce that Frederick Nathaniel ‘Toots’ Hibbert passed away peacefully tonight, surrounded by his family at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica,” his family said in a statement.

“The family and his management team would like to thank the medical teams and professionals for their care and diligence, and ask that you respect their privacy during their time of grief. Mr. Hibbert is survived by his wife of 39 years, Miss D, and his seven of eight children.”

Although no cause of death was given, Hibbert was hospitalized last month after showing symptoms consistent with the coronavirus.

Ziggy Marley, the son of reggae star Bob Marley, said he had recently spoken with Hibbert. “I spoke with him a few weeks ago [and] told him how much I loved him and what he means to me,” Ziggy Marley said in a tribute on his Instagram page.

“We laughed and shared our mutual respect. I am fully in sorrow tonight. I will miss his smile and laughter [and] his genuine nature. [Toots] was a father figure to me; his spirit is with us [and] his music fills us with his energy. I will never forget him. #foundingfather.”

Hibbert’s death comes just weeks after Toots and the Maytals released their new album, Got to Be Tough, the band’s first full-length LP in more than 10 years, Rolling Stone reports.

Hibbert was born December 8th, 1942, in May Pen, Jamaica, the youngest of eight children. His parents were both strict Seventh-day Adventist preachers so he grew up singing gospel music in a church choir.

In 1962, while working at a local barbershop, he was heard singing inside by Ralphus “Raleigh” Gordon and Nathaniel “Jerry” Matthias. They would become a trio forming The Maytals – named after Hibbert’s hometown of May Pen.
